Review: Cretton's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is Spidey at His Best

Another year, another Spider-Man movie. Everyone is back out in theaters watching the web slinger sling his webs again, Spider-Man is still one of the most beloved characters worldwide, it'll be a massive hit – as always. Thankfully it's also a massively good movie. How many Spidey movies are we at now? Officially this is the 10th Spider-Man movie so far, but that's only counting the movies specifically about Spidey created by Sony Pictures – not all of his MCU appearances or anything else. It's the 4th one starring Tom Holland and the first to not include "Home" in the title after the original trilogy made by director Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019, Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021). Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, his second big Marvel movie after directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, and he aced this. I'm relieved to say this is actually one of the best Spider-Man movies yet, up there with Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. When you let a really wonderful filmmaker like Destin Daniel Cretton make a movie you get something really wonderful. First Trailer for Swiss Film 'A Happy Family' About an Unhappy Family

"Children are safe when someone is there with them." A first look promo trailer is available for an indie film from Switzerland titled A Happy Family, made by filmmaker Jan-Eric Mack. This recently premiered at the 2026 Karlovy Vary Film Festival this July, where it was competing in their Crystal Globe Competition section (though it didn't win any awards). Niki has two jobs, no money, and no time. After a fire turns her life upside down, her children are placed in foster care. Banned from contact, she creates a new identity to secretly stays close to them. When she risks being exposed, everything is at stake... Anna Schinz leads the cast as defiant momma Niki, along with Julia Jentsch, Bettina Stucky, Michael Neuenschwander, and Martina Apostolova. Early reviews from KVIFF state: "The upended narrative tones, speckled with moments of painfully empathetic moments, manages to feel like a blend of Ken Loach's Ladybird Ladybird (1994)." Official US Trailer for Anime 'The Last Blossom' with a Talking Flower

A dying prisoner reflects on his final summer of freedom in 1986, when he lived with a woman and her son surrounded by Housenka flowers. Film History Doc 'Boorman and the Devil' Trailer on Making 'Exorcist II'

After directing Point Blank and Deliverance, director John Boorman was offered to direct The Exorcist II for Warner Bros in 1975. She must face what comes next as sparks fly. "You shouldn't worry, Samba loves you." 🇧🇫 Film Movement has debuted their brand new trailer for the 4K restoration of a 1992 African movie titled Samba Traoré, by acclaimed filmmaker Idrissa Ouedraogo. The film originally comes from the country of Burkina Faso and it played at the 1993 Berlin Film Festival, where it won a Silver Bear prize for "the honest depiction of ordinary life." Samba returns to his village flush with new funds. Soon enough he manages to charm the beautiful Saratou into marrying him and, along with another friend, builds the first bar their village has ever seen. But his conscience keeps nagging him and the police are on the lookout for the "gas station murderer." Starring Bakary Sangaré, Mariam Kaba, and Abdoulaye Komboudri. It's one of Luca Guadagnino's favorite films – he's quoted in the trailer. Restored in 4K, the 35mm original image and sound negative were digitized in high quality, digitally restored, and a new color grading was applied by Cinegrell. The Venice Film Festival, known officially in Italian as Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia, has officially announced its selection of films playing at the historic film festival in 2026. Celebrating their 83rd year (the oldest fest in the world) in 2026, Venezia is serving up a rather intriguing selection of new films to enjoy – though this year's line-up is quite unimpressive and lacking any real excitement. Venice 2026 runs from September 2nd to September 12th in just a few months. A few of the highlights include some major premieres that have been on our radar: Danny Boyle's new film Ink on creating a tabloid newspaper in the UK; Werner Herzog's latest film Bucking Fastard starring both of the Mara sisters; Koreeda's manga movie Look Back; The Father director Florian Zeller's Bunker, Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine; Alex Gibney's Musk doc; and others that seem promising. Charlize reveals she's a huge fan of the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie (me too). Lupita Nyong'o talks about Jackie Chan. Zendaya (+ Charlize) talk about how much they adore Pixar's Coco. Tom Holland discusses making The Impossible and his love of the 1996 movie Primal Fear with Edward Norton. Yet another story of a fractured family trying to reconcile years later. Yet another story of a family unable to actually reconcile despite being in the middle of a beautiful moment moving forard. But that's life for you, right? That's the truth about most families these days. While it is getting a bit cliche to see, it is still a brave act to make a film about a family and share all the ugly, rotten, uncomfortable sides of it. Sometimes laying it all bare and addressing all this trouble directly is the only way to really figure out how to move forward. But this doesn't always work, does it? The Guest (aka Gæsten) is a Danish family drama made by Danish filmmaker Mads Mengel as his first feature film after a few other TV series recently. The film had its world premiere at the 2026 Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it won the Best Director Award for filmmaker Mads Mengel and also the Special Jury Prize. I was also at the KVIFF world premiere, honored to sit & watch this film at its initial unveiling.
