Sony Pictures UK has revealed the official tariler for the film Prima Facie, an adaptation of the Tony-award winning stage play of the same name that played in London and NYC in the past few years. This just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF 2026) a few weeks ago - though the reviews were mostly bad, saying it's a lackluster and uninteresting adaptation that plays like a TV movie. Prima Facie follows Tessa, an ambitious defense lawyer. She expertly represents her clients, including those who are accused of sexual assault. However, she learns the law does not provide justice after being sexually assaulted by a coworker. Starring Cynthia Erivo as the barrister Tessa Ensler. TIFF adds: "Backed by a magnificent supporting cast that includes Daniel Ings, Elizabeth Dulau, and Simon Russell Beale, Erivo is at once devastating and inspiring in this dauntingly complex role. 'Prima facie' is a Latin expression meaning 'based on first impression,' and this hard-hitting, intelligent film shows just how unreliable initial assessments can be." One Final Day at an Old Cinema - 'Concessions' Indie Comedy Trailer

Magenta Edge Films revealed their official trailer for an indie film titled Concessions, another amusing love letter to a dying cinema and the patrons who don't want to leave. Also this year there's an Irish film titled Once Upon a Time in a Cinema set at a cinema, and last year there was the The Regulars set in London's old Prince Charles Cinema. From writer/director Mas Bouzidi, Concessions premiered at the 2025 Edinburgh Film Festival last year and arrives in the US to watch this fall (in limited theaters and on VOD). As the Royal Alamo Cinema closes its doors for good; the jaded staff, eccentric patrons, and an unhinged manager stumble through one last night at the movies — grappling with busted dreams, bad popcorn, and hard goodbyes. This was filmed on 16mm in Suffern, NY at the Lafayette Theater (see Google Maps). Venice 2026 Recap - 6 Worthwhile Films to Watch From the Festival

"He should be my film's protagonist." Time for a final recap. Each year, I am lucky for the opportunity to return to the splendid city of Venice in Northern Italy to attend the Venice Film Festival and catch the latest films premiering there. Unfortunately the selection at Venice 2026 was a huge disappointment - there were so few good films to talk about, that I can only really highlight these 6 films below worthy of being watched. The last few years were much better, but this year not a single film wowed me. This was my 10th year returning to Venice, and I'm always happy to be back, no matter how the films turn out (good or bad – it's fun to be there and watch everything). In total, I viewed 32 films during Venice this year. The Golden Lion winner (Woman Unknown) was not one of my favorite of the fest by a long shot, however the Grand Prix runner up Possible Love is the one that actually should've won instead. I'm depressed by just how bad the line-up was! Nonetheless, I still want to mention my 6 favorites from Venice 2026 anyway. A24 has unveiled a surprise teaser trailer for a movie now titled Slayground, a Halloween haunted house horror movie from acclaimed genre filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier (of Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, Rebel Ridge). This secret teaser started playing in theaters this past weekend - everyone was surprised because this new title is so new it is not even listed online anywhere. Written & directed by Saulnier, the film was initially titled October, but since it won't release this October and A24 didn't want to wait until next year, they gave it a new title. Netflix has revealed the first full official trailer for the long-awaited new David Fincher movie titled correctly: The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. This is the official new name for this (different from the Super Bowl spot), a spin-off from Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood featuring the same character. Now set for release in November (in IMAX theaters) then streaming on Netflix in December later this year. It's 1977, 8 years since Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) encountered the Manson family. In these Mis-Adventures, directed by Fincher from a new script by Tarantino, the fairytale is over. Los Angeles no longer needs a hippie-slaying stuntman the way it did. But Hollywood will always have problems, problems that can only be solved with Cliff's unique (occasionally extralegal) abilities. "After a few days, you won't want to leave." Film Movement revealed a new trailer for the 4K restoration of this 1991 Chinese classic titled Raise the Red Lantern. One of the early films in acclaimed director Zhang Yimou's oeuvre (his 4th feature at the time), this premiered at both the Venice & Toronto Film Festivals in 1991 before opening in the US in 1992. "As visually striking as it is dramatically effective," Zhang's Oscar-nominated Raise the Red Lantern sumptuously captures 1920s China while "subtly exploring the politics of power & control." A young woman becomes the fourth concubine of a wealthy man and soon realizes there's fierce competition for his attention & associated privileges. Starring Gong Li, Ma Jingwu, He Saifei, Cao Cuifen, and Jin Shuyuan. The 4K restoration of Raise the Red Lantern was carried out by the Udine Far East Film Festival on the occasion of its 26th edition. The original image & sound negatives were used under the supervision of Director Zhang Yimou. The vintage positive copy, shown at the 1991 Venice Film Festival and preserved at Venice Biennale's Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts, was used for color reference. Venice 2026: 'Too Much Sugar' Depicts the Real Power of Storytelling

"Ryan and I share a basic desire to correct the mistakes of our deadbeat fathers and stop the generational hurt by being good fathers ourselves." Watching films every single day and recommending films for a living has made me rather unsure if cinema is actually having the positive impact that we all want to believe it is. Are people really changing after watching new films? Are they actually learning more about the world? Are they really growing & evolving after they experience new perspectives from other people? Thankfully there is one film that is capturing this change happening. Too Much Sugar is a unique documentary hybrid film created and directed by American filmmaker Robert Greene. It just premiered at the 2026 Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti section though it really feels much more like a Sundance film through and through. It's a clever meta filmmaking concept about addressing toxic masculinity by having two manly papas from a small town in Missouri confront themselves by making a film about themselves and their families. What's even more entertaining is simply listening to Slavoj Zizek geek out about his favorite movies and talk about dystopian society for over two hours. One of my favorite uber-geeky, philosophical documentary films of 2026 is The Pervert's Guide to Utopias, the latest doc creation made by filmmaker Sophie Fiennes and Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek. This is their third film together complete a trilogy across decades: starting with The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (in 2006) and continuing with The Pervert's Guide to Ideology (in 2012). In 2026, Zizek is ready to address the broken, chaotic, authoritarian, insane world we live in right now. Venice 2026 Awards: 'Woman Unknown' & 'Possible Love' Top Prizes

Who's taking the Golden Lion home this year? At the end of it all, we finally have our winners. The 83nd Venice Film Festival wrapped up this weekend on the Lido island in Venice, and awards were handed out at a fancy awards show in the Sala Grande. The top prize at Venice is a Golden Lion (in honor of the iconic lion that is the symbol of the city) and it's one of the top prizes in cinema along with the Palme d'Or from Cannes (which was given to Cristian Mungiu in May). This year's winner is the film Woman Unknown, a Danish feature about a woman just after World War II living in Denmark dealing with intense accusations following the war. Just like last year's oddball pick, this is another entirely unexpected Golden Lion winner – and a film that most critics (even those who like it) agree isn't really the best film at the fest and shouldn't have won. Then again, it is the only film in the Venice Competition line-up that is directed by a woman, and the jury was lead by Maggie Gyllenhaal this year who pretty clearly stated she preferred this film so that a female director is the winner. It's a good film, but not a great film compared to the other favorites: Possible Love (which did get the second place prize), Wild Horse Nine (which did get Best Actor), Naza (which got a special prize), and Look Back. Venice 2026: Koreeda's 'Look Back' is a Charming Story of Friendship

"Thank you for getting me out of my room." This is a beautiful story about friendship & why friends matter so much. One of the highlights of the 2026 Venice Film Festival is this new film Look Back, a live-action version of both the original manga and the anime of the same name. Look Back is the second feature film directed by award-winning Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda this year. His other one, Sheep in the Box, premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and it was one of my least favorite films of that fest. What a flip to that experience! Koreeda's Look Back is one of my favorite films of this fest. A delightful, inspiring, wholesome coming-of-age story about two shy girls who bond over their love for drawing manga. Yes, there is a darker side to the story (as everyone who knows the manga / anime is already familiar with) but I can't help admitting I still feel so moved by how wonderful the rest of this story is anyway. I'm not surprised that Koreeda made another beautiful film about young Japanese kids finding their place & finding happiness in their own way – he's a master at telling these stories. Venice 2026: Ellen Burstyn is a Delight in 'Place to Be' Road Trip Film

A woman and her bird go on adventure to New York City and back. One of the oddest films included within the 2026 Venice Film Festival line-up is this enjoyable road trip comedy called Place to Be, made by the Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó. This is actually his second feature film premiering in 2026 – he also directed At the Sea from Berlinale earlier this year (read my review of that one). Thankfully this one is much better, and much more uplifting, which is the kind of cinematic balm we could use right now. It's also much more conventional, and much more formulaic, but that doesn't mean it isn't mostly entertaining as well. Place to Be is a road trip movie about an elderly woman, played by the exceptional Ellen Burstyn, who ends up running away with a pigeon that flies in through her window. Along the way she connects with an alcoholic divorced dad and learns about the sport of pigeon racing while rediscovering the world anew. This is one of my favorite indie sci-fi creations, which initially premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival some 25 years ago. Richard Kelly's masterpiece is still iconic all these years later. After barely escaping a bizarre accident involving a jet engine following onto his house, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in an evil rabbit suit who convinces him to commit a series of crimes. Venice 2026: Florian Zeller's 'Bunker' is a Nonsensical, Cliche Misfire

So is this movie about an architect being hired to build a bunker? Or is this movie about a marriage on the rocks? Or can it be about both of these narratives – and still be interesting? If only it was actually rational and real, maybe, but this is a major disappointment. It should not come as a surprise that the new Florian Zeller film titled Bunker does not actually take place in, depict, show, or really discuss the bunker concept that it's "about." Fine, so be it, that's not the point. It mainly takes place inside of one big, gorgeous home in London where 2 wealthy upper class Spanish parents and their 2 kids live in while working in the city. The metaphor is extremely obvious and entirely cliche – this is their "bunker" and the narrative is supposed to be mirroring their concerns about a bunker job offer with their actual inability to understand their own fears about their own bunker home. And their marriage. Or something like that? Whatever is going on this film, it's a complete mess & laughably bad. Florian Zeller's Bunker is his worst film yet. Terrific Trailer for 'Straight Circle' - 2 Enemy Soldiers Surrealist Comedy

"What we're doing means something." Joint Venture has revealed the official trailer for an indie surrealist comedy called Straight Circle, created by filmmaker Oscar Hudson. This premiered one year ago at the 2025 Venice Film Festival where it also won the Venice Critics' Week Grand Prize. I'm so glad this is finally getting released in theaters this fall! I've never seen anything like this! Extremely creative and clever, and amusing in its fascinating narrative involving these two "enemies". Even Bong Joon-ho is a big fan of it! He is quoted in this trailer! A disorienting nightmare gradually takes hold of two enemy soldiers stationed on a lonely desert border in this mind-bending picture. Hudson has crafted a surreal and absurdist satire about the arbitrary nature of borders and the shared humanity underlying nationalistic division. This is a film of sensory excess, where unhinged violence bleeds right into bizarre horror. Starring real-life brothers Elliott & Luke Tittensor in this wildly imaginative satire about what happens when borders drawn in the sand start to blur. Also featuring Neil Maskell as the goat herder. Venice 2026: Sabu's 'Arrested Memory' is Clever Action Comedy Fun

We need a bit more laughter in this world! And why not have some fun with some action comedy. Sabu (a Japanese filmmaker named Hiroyuki Tanaka) is an experienced director who has been making comedy and action films for decades – starting in the 1990s through the 2000s. His latest creation is an action comedy called Arrested Memory, filmed in Taiwan, which is premiering at the 2026 Venice Film Festival before playing at the Toronto Film Festival in their prestigious Midnight Madness section. While far from being an instant favorite or festival knock out, Sabu's Arrested Memory is still tons of fun. A delightfully wacky, extra goofy Taiwan action comedy about a cop with amnesia trying to solve a kidnapping case who gets mixed up in all kinds of other shenanigans. It's enjoyable to see him set this story in Taiwan this time around, though the location doesn't make much of a difference. Luckily it's also 87 minutes long, so just as it's about to wear out its welcome, it nicely wraps up and our funny forgetful officer finally gets to go home and get some rest. // Continue Reading ›

His new life with the monks of the hospice consists of cold weather, hard work, loneliness – until he rescues and secretly raises a St. Bernard puppy from starvation. When George is in danger of losing his beloved Barry, he must prove his conscience is stronger than all the rules in the world. Inspired by the legend of Switzerland's most famous rescue dog, the film combines emotional storytelling, cinematic landscapes, and the universal themes of friendship and bravery, making it a timeless story for audiences of all ages.
