The Story of Goodfellas, looking back at the success and legacy of Martin Scorsese's iconic 1990 movie Goodfellas. The ultimate love letter to his mafia film with Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, and Lorraine Bracco. Released in 1990, directed by Scorsese and written by Nicholas Pileggi & Martin Scorsese, the film went on to win the Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joe Pesci) Academy Award after six nominations from the Oscars back then. Often regarded as one of Scorsese's best (along with many others in his filmography) this doc explores the making of the film, how it turned out so iconic, and how much of an impact it has had on cinema and beyond. New Trailer for Zhang Yimou's 'Raise the Red Lantern' 4K Restoration

"After a few days, you won't want to leave." Film Movement revealed a new trailer for the 4K restoration of this 1991 Chinese classic titled Raise the Red Lantern. One of the early films in acclaimed director Zhang Yimou's oeuvre (his 4th feature at the time), this premiered at both the Venice & Toronto Film Festivals in 1991 before opening in the US in 1992. "As visually striking as it is dramatically effective," Zhang's Oscar-nominated Raise the Red Lantern sumptuously captures 1920s China while "subtly exploring the politics of power & control." A young woman becomes the fourth concubine of a wealthy man and soon realizes there's fierce competition for his attention & associated privileges. Starring Gong Li, Ma Jingwu, He Saifei, Cao Cuifen, and Jin Shuyuan. The 4K restoration of Raise the Red Lantern was carried out by the Udine Far East Film Festival on the occasion of its 26th edition. The original image & sound negatives were used under the supervision of Director Zhang Yimou. The vintage positive copy, shown at the 1991 Venice Film Festival and preserved at Venice Biennale's Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts, was used for color reference. Venice 2026: 'Too Much Sugar' Depicts the Real Power of Storytelling

"Ryan and I share a basic desire to correct the mistakes of our deadbeat fathers and stop the generational hurt by being good fathers ourselves." Watching films every single day and recommending films for a living has made me rather unsure if cinema is actually having the positive impact that we all want to believe it is. Are people really changing after watching new films? Are they actually learning more about the world? Are they really growing & evolving after they experience new perspectives from other people? Thankfully there is one film that is capturing this change happening. Too Much Sugar is a unique documentary hybrid film created and directed by American filmmaker Robert Greene. It just premiered at the 2026 Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti section though it really feels much more like a Sundance film through and through. It's a clever meta filmmaking concept about addressing toxic masculinity by having two manly papas from a small town in Missouri confront themselves by making a film about themselves and their families. Alamo Drafthouse has revealed the first look teaser trailer for the film titled Littermates, which is screening at Fantastic Fest 2026 this month. It first premiered at Dances With Films earlier in the summer. This intriguing indie sci-fi horror film is about two people who end up a cottage being taken care of though something is strange about their situation. It's written & directed by filmmakers Scott Tinkham and Michael Woloson, a clever new cinematic creation that genre fans should watch out for. Amidst the chaos of a mysterious war, two victims of an attack take refuge at a cottage in the English countryside, where an enigmatic caretaker insists they must stick together and never go outside. Starring Joey Bader, Kaylee McGregor, and Oliver Woolf. This reminds me of that Silo series with the whole "outside world being dangerous, please stay here in this dystopian contained area" premise. Blamed for magical mischief at the Royal Ball, stepsister Lilith turns her other step-sister into a frog and causes the kingdom to be run by a mean girl. She originally began working on this project back in the early 2020s with some assistance from Hiroshima Artist-in-Residence. A data engineer rushes through life, believing multitasking saves time—but it only creates chaos. (But of course...) Despite his strict control over time, nothing gets done: his home is a mess, work overflows, and breakfast is always burnt. He discovers joy in life only when time breaks apart. This is certainly a feeling we're all extra familiar with right now, especially in the hustle bustle of today's world and peak burnout culture. The only thing slightly more refreshing than splashing cold water on your face is listening to maestro Slavoj Zizek slap you (in the face) with some ridiculous truths about what's screwed up with the world & how we're all a part of this madness. What's even more entertaining is simply listening to Slavoj Zizek geek out about his favorite movies and talk about dystopian society for over two hours. One of my favorite uber-geeky, philosophical documentary films of 2026 is The Pervert's Guide to Utopias, the latest doc creation made by filmmaker Sophie Fiennes and Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek. This is their third film together complete a trilogy across decades: starting with The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (in 2006) and continuing with The Pervert's Guide to Ideology (in 2012). In 2026, Zizek is ready to address the broken, chaotic, authoritarian, insane world we live in right now. Mr. Irrelevant: The Movie is the inspiring true story of John Tuggle, as played by Superman himself David Corenswet, the last player selected in the last round of the 1983 NFL draft by the New York Giants. A true underdog, Tuggle defied expectations on the field and off for his then first-year head coach, Bill Parcells, as played by Michael Shannon. Venice 2026 Awards: 'Woman Unknown' & 'Possible Love' Top Prizes

Who's taking the Golden Lion home this year? At the end of it all, we finally have our winners. The 83nd Venice Film Festival wrapped up this weekend on the Lido island in Venice, and awards were handed out at a fancy awards show in the Sala Grande. The top prize at Venice is a Golden Lion (in honor of the iconic lion that is the symbol of the city) and it's one of the top prizes in cinema along with the Palme d'Or from Cannes (which was given to Cristian Mungiu in May). This year's winner is the film Woman Unknown, a Danish feature about a woman just after World War II living in Denmark dealing with intense accusations following the war. Just like last year's oddball pick, this is another entirely unexpected Golden Lion winner – and a film that most critics (even those who like it) agree isn't really the best film at the fest and shouldn't have won. Then again, it is the only film in the Venice Competition line-up that is directed by a woman, and the jury was lead by Maggie Gyllenhaal this year who pretty clearly stated she preferred this film so that a female director is the winner. It's a good film, but not a great film compared to the other favorites: Possible Love (which did get the second place prize), Wild Horse Nine (which did get Best Actor), Naza (which got a special prize), and Look Back.
