Thousands arrested in occupied Kashmir as curfew continues for 15th day

Thousands of people have been arrested by Indian authorities
Thousands of people have been arrested by Indian authorities in occupied Kashmir as curfew and other restrictions continued for the 15th day on Monday, following the Indian government’s abolition of the special status of the occupied valley.

At least 4,000 people have been arrested under the black Public Safety Act (PSA) over the past two weeks, a magistrate told AFP in Srinagar.

The magistrate said most of them were flown out of Kashmir because prisons here have run out of capacity he had used a satellite phone allocated to him to collate the figures from colleagues across the occupied territory amid a communications blackout imposed by authorities.

An Indian government spokesman, Rohit Kansal, said previously there was “no centralised figure” for the total number of people detained, but a number of government officials in Srinagar, including police and other security personnel, confirmed the arrests.

A police official said on condition of anonymity, “Around 6,000 people were medically examined at a couple of places in Srinagar after they were detained. They are first sent to the central jail in Srinagar and later flown out of here in military aircrafts.” Two senior government officials also confirmed that at least two dozen people were admitted to hospitals with pellet injuries, as heavy clashes broke out in a number of places in Srinagar including Soura, Rainawari, Nowhetta and Gojwara areas.

As a result of the strict curfew and communication blockade, a humanitarian crisis is fast unfolding as residents of occupied Kashmir face severe shortages of essential commodities including baby food and life-saving medicines.

Almost all Hurriyat leaders, including Syed Ali Gilani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, continue to remain under house arrest or in jails.

Indian ceasefire violations: Pakistan record protest with Indian deputy high commissioner

Pakistan protests Indian ceasefire violations with deputy high commissioner
India’s Deputy High Commissioner Gaurav Ahluwalia was summoned to Pakistan's Foreign Office on Monday to lodge a protest against ceasefire violations.

Foreign Office spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal handed over a dossier to Ahluwalia and condemned the continuous violation of the ceasefire agreement.

On Sunday, two Pakistani civilians were martyred when Indian army engaged in unprovoked firing at the Line of Control (LoC). In a statement, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the Indian army “targeted civil population with mortars and Anti Tank Guided Missiles in Hot Spring Sector along LoC”.

According to the ISPR: "Two elderly innocent civilians Lal Muhamamd S/O of Muhamamd Din, age 75 years and Hassan Din S/O Lal Din age 61 years, residents of Village Nagrai embraced shahdat."

Dr Faisal urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 Ceasefire arrangement, investigate the incidents of ceasefire violations, instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire in letter and spirit and maintain peace on the LoC and the Working Boundary.

He stressed that India should permit UNMOGIP (United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan) to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

The Foreign Office in a statement mentioned that Indian occupation forces along the LoC and Working boundary continuously targeted civilian populated areas with artillery fire, heavy-calibre mortars, and automatic weapons.

"The deliberate targeting of civilian populated areas is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity, international human rights and humanitarian laws.

The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation," the FO statement added.

Opposition parties APC on Kashmir issue today

All Parties Conference is chairing by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Opposition parties on Monday will hold an All Parties Conference (APC) to deliberate on the situation in Indian occupied Kashmir and the political situation in the country.

The meeting will be chaired by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and attended by top leaders from the PPP and PML-N. Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will not be attending the meeting.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maulana Fazlur Rehman met last night to discuss the agenda of the APC.

Earlier this month, India through a presidential decree revoked Article 370 which granted special status to occupied Kashmir. New Delhi has maintained a curfew in the valley since then with a complete communication blackout.

Last week members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met in over five decades to discuss the critical situation in Indian occupied Kashmir, urging parties to dispute to refrain from taking any unilateral action.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi, welcomed the UNSC meeting and said the country was "grateful to China for calling this meeting".

"The voice of the Kashmiri people have been heard today. The fact that this meeting took place is testimony to the fact that this is an internationally recognised dispute. This meeting has reaffirmed the validity of the UNSC resolutions on the status of Jammu and Kashmir," she said, speaking to reporters after the meeting.

Fake bank accounts case: Zardari, Talpur’s judicial remand extended till Sep 5

Former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur
An accountability court in Islamabad extended the judicial remand of former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister, Faryal Talpur, till September 5 in the long-running money laundering and fake bank accounts case.

Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir, while hearing the Park Lane reference and money laundering case against the two Pakistan Peoples Party leaders earlier today, instructed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to provide copies of the money laundering case to the accused and adjourned the hearing till September 5.

Copies of the Park Lane reference were handed over to the suspects during today’s hearing.

Both Zardari and Talpur are being held at Adiala Jail, after they were arrested by the accountability watchdog earlier this year on charges of laundering billions of rupees through fictitious accounts.

Zardari, who was shifted to Adiala Jail on Friday, appeared before the court today and claimed before the judge that he was being mistreated in the prison. The former president’s counsel Sardar Latif Khosa had filed a plea in the court asking that his client be provided with A-class facilities in prison, including air-conditioning, medical facilities and permission to meet his family.

Khosa again asked the judge today to grant better facilities to Zardari in the prison. “My client suffers from a number of medical conditions which may pose a threat to his life,” the counsel told the court, as he asked for air-conditioning in the cell.

The court will hear the plea for A-class facilities in prison on Tuesday (tomorrow).

Meanwhile, Deputy Prosecutor NAB Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi informed the accountability court that the accountability bureau has decided to file a supplementary reference against Zardari and Talpur in the money-laundering case. The reference will be filed in the light of new evidence found by NAB in the case, he added.

In view of the flood alert, the administrations of Kasur and other districts located at the bank of River Sutlej have been advised to initiate necessary measures to tackle any emergency.

Trump does not want to do business with China

U.S. President Donald Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday said he did not want the United States to do business with China’s Huawei even as the administration weighs whether to extend a grace period for the companyu

U.S. Commerce Department is expected to extend a reprieve given to Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] that permits the Chinese firm to buy supplies from U.S. companies so that it can service existing customers.

The “temporary general license” will be extended for Huawei for 90 days, citing two sources familiar with the situation.

On Sunday, Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One in New Jersey that he did not want to do business with Huawei for national security reasons.

Trump said “At this moment it looks much more like we’re not going to do business, I don’t want to do business at all because it is a national security threat and I really believe that the media has covered it a little bit differently than that.”

He said there were small parts of Huawei’s business that could be exempted from a broader ban, but that it would be “very complicated.” He did not say whether his administration would extend the “temporary general license. Speaking earlier on Sunday, National Economic Council director Larry Kudlow said the Commerce department would extend the Huawei licensing process for three months as a gesture of “good faith” amid broader trade negotiations with China.

PTI government to present its report of failures today: Maryam Aurangzaib

PTI government to present its report of failures today: Maryam Aurangzaib
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb on Sunday said, the illegitimate and incompetent government will proudly present its report of failures today.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) government which completes its first year in power today will present its performance report in different sectors during the past year.

“Today Imran Khan is forming an inquiry commission to inquire the unprecedented 7.6 trillion increase in debt over last one year due to his incompetence!,” Aurangzeb said on Twitter.

She added, “The federal government debt stock rose from Rs24.2 trillion as on 3-6-2018 to Rs31.8 trillion as on 30-6-2019, showing an increase of a staggering Rs7.6 trillion or 31 percent.”

“At a GDP of 38.6 trillion, this comes as 82.4 per cent of GDP. This is an unprecedented increase in a single year. It is necessary, therefore, to examine the causes that have led to such an increase,” the PML-N leader added.

Criticising the government, Aurangzeb said, the domestic debt increased from Rs16.4 trillion to Rs20.7 trillion showing an increase of Rs4.3 trillion. “External debt rose from Rs7.8 trillion to Rs11.1 trillion, showing an increase of Rs3.3 trillion or 42 per cent,” she tweeted.

She further said the last fiscal year has seen an unprecedented increase in the interest rate. Starting from 6.5 per cent at the beginning of the fiscal year, the interest rate has increased to 12.25 percent at the close, nearly doubling.

“We now examine the impact of devaluation. Based on the budget documents, Pakistan has borrowed Rs1,403 billion in external loans while it has paid back Rs929 billion in foreign loans,” Aurangzeb said, adding “Net external borrowing of Rs474 billion. Subtracting this from Rs3,300 billion leaves Rs2,826 billion as the capital loss on external debt.”

This is an unprecedented capital loss due to rupee devaluation, which depreciated from Rs124.5 to Rs163 per dollar during the financial year.

Sheesha more toxic than smoking tobacco

Popularity of sheesha has increased in recent years
While the popularity of sheesha (tobacco pipe) has increased in recent years, researchers said it may be more dangerous than other forms of smoking tobacco.

Using a custom-built testing device, the researchers analysed emissions during a typical sheesha session and found that one draw from a pipe contained as many noxious substances as a cigarette.

Veronique Perraud from the University of California said that the Hookah mainstream smoke, which is directly inhaled, has many toxic and harmful chemicals, like nicotine that can lead to tobacco addiction, irritating carbonyl compounds, and benzene, a known carcinogen.

Perraud said that due to the greater volume inhaled in every puff and the longer duration of a smoking session, the hookah often delivers a higher dose of those chemicals to the smoker.

It also produced a large quantity of carbon monoxide, mainly from the burning of charcoal to heat the tobacco or herbal mixture in its bowl.

According to the study, minuscule particles can pose significant health risks by making their way deep into the pulmonary system and by readily crossing the blood-brain barrier.

India captured by fascist, racist Hindu supremacist ideology: PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday said India has been captured by a fascist and racist Hindu supremacist ideology and leadership just like how the Nazis had captured Germany.

The prime minister in a series of tweets said, “India has been captured, as Germany had been captured by Nazis, by a fascist, racist Hindu Supremacist ideology and leadership. This threatens 9 million Kashmiris under siege in IoK for over 2 weeks which should have sent alarm bells ringing across the world with UN Observers being sent there.”

PM Imran further said the threat also extends to Pakistan, the minorities in India and in fact the very fabric of Nehru and Gandhi's India. “One can simply Google to understand the link between the Nazi ideology and ethnic cleansing and genocide ideology of the RSS-BJP Founding Fathers.”

“Already 4 million Indian Muslims face detention camps and cancellation of citizenship. World must take note as this genie is out of the bottle and the doctrine of hate and genocide, with RSS goons on the rampage, will spread unless the international community acts now to stop it.”

He also urged the world to seriously consider the safety and security of India's nuclear arsenal in the control of the “fascist, racist Hindu supremacist Modi government. “This is an issue that impacts not just the region but the world.”

On August 5, the Narendra Modi-led Hindu nationalist government had announced the scrapping of the special status of occupied Kashmir by revoking Article 370 of the Indian constitution.

Cummins double stuns England after Smith makes brave 92 in second Ashes Test

Australia's David Warner drops a catch on England's Ben Stokes
Australia's Steve Smith returned to make 92 after a sickening blow to the neck before England captain Joe Root fell for the first golden duck of his Test career as Pat Cummins took two wickets in two balls on a dramatic fourth day of the second Ashes clash at Lord's.

England were 96-4 in their second innings, a lead of 104 runs, when rain forced an early close on Saturday.

But with one day left, Australia know early wickets on Sunday could leave them in a position to press for a victory that would put them 2-0 up in a five-match series.

England will now look to Ben Stokes, dropped twice on his way to 16 not out, and Jos Buttler 10 not out to keep Australia at bay.

Smith's 92 was the centrepiece of Australia's 250 all out in reply to England's first innings 258.

The star batsman had made 80 when he was felled by a bouncer from fast bowler Jofra Archer, making his Test debut, timed at 92.4 mph.

The ball struck him on the side of the neck and head.

Smith, fell face forward onto the ground. He was wearing a helmet without the additional neck protection that was introduced following the death of Phillip Hughes after his former Australia team-mate was hit by a bouncer in a 2014 domestic Sheffield Shield match in Sydney.

He doesn't wear it because it is a personal choice, Australia coach Justin Langer told Sky Sports after stumps.

"We know it is available but he can't feel comfortable with it on."

'Terrible blow'
Smith, who had marked his comeback Test following a 12-month ball-tampering ban, with innings of 144 and 142 in Australia's 251-run win in the series opener at Edgbaston, received several minutes of on-field treatment involving both teams' medical staff.

He got to his feet but eventually retired hurt, with Smith receiving a generous round of applause as he returned to the pavilion.

It was a terrible blow," said Langer. "It looked horrible at the time.

This series has seen the introduction of concussion protocols that allow injured batsmen to be replaced by a substitute — previously restricted to fielding duty alone.

But Langer insisted Smith's health had not been put at undue risk by letting him resume his innings as soon as possible when Peter Siddle's exit left Australia 218-7 after a break of 46 minutes.

"We were, absolutely (happy for Smith to bat again). He went through the concussion testing," said Langer, himself hit on the head several times during his career as an Australia opening batsman.

"We wouldn't let him go out unless we were confident he could do the job."

Archer had previously struck Smith, then on 70, on his unprotected forearm with another bouncer in a fiery eight-over spell.

'Serious pace'
And it was that injury, not the blow to the neck, which Australia said prevented Smith from fielding on Saturday, although a team spokesman said later that hospital X-rays had revealed no fracture.
From the second and third balls he faced on his return, Smith hit two fours off paceman Chris Woakes.

But on 92, facing his ninth ball, Smith shouldered arms to a Woakes nip-back delivery and was plumb lbw to leave Australia 234-8.

Smith reviewed almost as an after-thought before replays confirmed the end of a 161-ball innings that included 14 fours.

Stuart Broad took 4-65 in 27.3 overs and Woakes 3-61 in 19 while Archer finished with figures of 2-59 in 29.

"That was serious, serious pace," said Woakes of Archer. "I was at fine leg and could still tell.

"It is never nice to see anyone get hit. Thankfully it looks like Steve is OK.

"He is a great player and it took something special from Jofra to get him out of his bubble."

England then suffered an a familiar collapse, Jason Roy, caught and bowled by Cummins (2-16) off a leading edge.

Next ball, 9-1 became 9-2 with Root caught behind off a superb delivery.

Joe Denly survived the hat-trick before being caught and bowled by Siddle (2-19), who also removed Rory Burns.
