Venice 2023: Besson's 'DogMan' is a Dog-Filled Triumph of Vengeance

DogMan Review
Release the hounds!! One of my favorite films from the first half of the 2023 Venice Film Festival so far is DogMan, the latest original film from French filmmaker Luc Besson (director of films including Léon: The Professional, The Big Blue, The Fifth Element, Angel-A). After initially being planned for release earlier in the year, buzz from buyers at the EFM in early 2023 made them hold it until the fall. Now it's playing in the Main Competition in Venice, with a release set for the fall. It's worth the wait! DogMan is a triumphant vengeance movie with a traditional narrative structure that provides just the right amount of entertainment value. It's a tad cheesy, doesn't try to reinvent or rethink anything, yet it is an engaging story of a boy who grows up to become a vigilante. Of course, as a dog lover, I usually love every movie involving dogs - and this is a major one. There are so many dogs in it, so many cute pups of all kinds, and thankfully not a single one of them ever gets hurt or harmed. I would really like to hang out with all of the stars of this film, please. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'The Mission' Documentary About a Killed Missionary

The Mission Doc Trailer
"My friend did something stupid and courageous." Don't really agree with all of that... National Geographic Documentary Films has revealed the first official trailer for a doc called The Mission, made by talented doc filmmakers Amanda McBaine & Jesse Moss (of Boys State most recently). This is premiering at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival this weekend, hence the trailer arriving in celebration of its world premiere. The 26-year-old Christian missionary from America, John Chau, was killed by arrows as he attempted to make contact with an Indigenous group on an island off the coast of India, one of the last communities on the planet still living in isolation. This is his story. "The Mission contains multitudes, thanks to Amanda & Jesse's artful, empathic and nuanced storytelling. It is a gripping murder mystery that examines the moral and ethical implications of John Chau's story to probe deeply into the complicated history of colonialism and global exploration." Even if I don't like this story, it does look like a seriously captivating doc to watch. // Continue Reading ›

Korean Earthquake Survival Series 'Bargain' Trailer with Jun Jong-seo

Bargain Series Trailer
"I won the auction! Where do I get my kidney?" Paramount+ has revealed a new official trailer for a Korean survival thriller series called Bargain, now with English subtitles. This debuted in Korea last fall, and it's playing at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival soon as well. It's a combination of survival stories: an earthquake hits trapping a bunch of people in a collapsed building. Inside it is an organ-trafficking ring, posing as a brothel to lure in men. More from TIFF: "Based on Lee Chung-hyun’s award-winning short film of the same name that premiered at TIFF '16, this darkly funny, endlessly entertaining, and unpredictable series keeps us guessing what might be around every corner. Every character ― buyers, sellers, and bystanders alike ― is thrown into a desperate struggle to survive not only the crumbling building, but also the circumstances that brought them there in the first place." The series stars Jin Sun-kyu, Jun Jong-seo, Chang Ryul, and many others. It seems like gets wild once it gets going! A classic "watch everyone go at each other" concept. // Continue Reading ›

First Look Teaser for Crime Series 'Bodies' Following Four Detectives

Bodies Teaser Trailer
"You're not the first detective to discover this body..." Netflix has unveiled an intriguing first teaser trailer for a mysterious new crime series titled Bodies, arriving for streaming on Netflix sometime soon - it's set to debut in October this fall. Not to be confused with the horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies from last year - this one also has plenty of dead bodies to deal with, too, but only one Bodies in the title. Four detectives, living in four different eras, find the body of the same murder victim in London's Whitechapel. They soon come to realise their investigations have them central to a mysterious conspiracy spanning over a 150 years. It's set in 1819, 1941, 2023, and even 2053 in the near future. "As the mind-scrambling pulsewave plagues the last survivors of a terrifying techno-apocalypse, the amnesiac young woman known only as Maplewood can barely understand the body she's discovered." The series stars Shira Haas, Stephen Graham, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Kyle Soller, and Amaka Okafor. Seems like a very cool concept for a murder mystery. // Continue Reading ›

Joshua Tonks in Writers' Cabin Queer Thriller 'The Latent Image' Trailer

The Latent Image Trailer
"He had to hold his breath before he realized the pounding in his ears was his own heartbeat." Cinephobia Releasing + Bounty Films has released an official trailer for The Latent Image, a British mystery thriller set at a cabin in the US. This initially premiered at the 2022 Soho Horror Film Festival in London last year, with a US release set for September. A handsome stranger appears at a young thriller writer's cabin deep in the American wilderness. This stranger unexpectedly provides a source of inspiration, sexual interest and fear... Mysterious, intriguing, attractive and terrifying, has he found the perfect inspiration for his new book or are his darkest fantasies about to come to life? The small ensemble cast of this indie horror feature includes Joshua Tonks, William Tippery, and Jay Clift as the stranger. It is adapted from a short film made by the director previously. This looks better than it sounds, with plenty of twists and turns, of course. // Continue Reading ›

Second Official Trailer for 'Five Nights At Freddy's' Animatronic Horror

Five Night at Freddy's Horror Trailer
"Tell me how to stop them?" "You don't." Blumhouse has revealed a second official trailer for Five Nights At Freddy's, arriving in theaters just in time for Halloween this fall. The first two trailers have been pretty good, maybe more footage will get your attention. Based on the super popular video game series of the same name. The series consists of nine games at various locations connected to a family pizza restaurant franchise named "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza", based on its mascot, the animatronic bear Freddy Fazbear. In this horror movie, a troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy's has awoken something horrifying. Starring Josh Hutcherson, also with Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail, Mary Stuart Masterson, Kat Conner Sterling, Jessica Weiss, and Grant Feely. Very curious to see how they expand this story with these animatronic monsters. // Continue Reading ›

Inside Look at the National Ballet of Canada in 'Swan Song' Doc Trailer

Swan Song Doc Trailer
"You can't go half-way with 'Swan Lake.'" Who's ready to dive head-first into the world of ballet? Dogwoof has revealed an official promo trailer for the documentary film Swan Song, premiering soon at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. Not to be confused with Mahershala Ali's sci-fi film Swan Song or Udo Kier's indie comedy film Swan Song, both with the same name, this is a doc about the opera "Swan Lake". The Canadian film offers a deep look of the incredible devotion, artistry and sacrifices that Karen Kain and the National Ballet of Canada dancers make in their pursuit of creating something unique, meaningful, beautiful. TIFF says it's a powerfully intimate look at the process of putting on a performance of "Swan Lake". The fest adds: "Even something as simple as Kain pushing for the dancers to abandon the pink tights of the swan costumes — thus acknowledging the diversity of skin colours onstage — turns out to have revolutionary implications." This looks like a fascinating film about all the intricacies of putting on a show - reminds me of Birdman, too. // Continue Reading ›

Final Trailer for Netflix's Live-Action Anime 'One Piece' with Iñaki Godoy

One Piece Trailer
"Don't let anything get in the way of your dreams." "Not everyone gets to follow their dreams..." Netflix has unveiled one final official trailer for the live-action One Piece series, based on the super popular anime series (and manga). It's available to watch starting tomorrow on Netflix - hence this final marketing push. The seafaring story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who can turn rubber. With his crew of pirates, named the "Straw Hat Pirates", Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the ultimate treasure known as "One Piece" in order to become the next Pirate King. The manga by Eiichirô Oda was turned into an anime series, originally in 1999, with a total of 20 seasons. The live-action series stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji; plus an ensemble cast with Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, and many more. This does look like good fun! But also seems almost too wacky & weird? Early reviews say it's better than "Cowboy Bebop". // Continue Reading ›

Adam Driver is Enzo in Teaser Trailer for Michael Man's 'Ferrari' Movie

Ferrari Trailer
"If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win." Neon has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the Ferrari movie, the latest film from iconic director Michael Mann. This will be premiering in a few days at the 2023 Venice Film Festival as one of the festival's big highlights - since it was shot entirely in Italy and it's about a super famous Italian man. Mann's Ferrari is set in the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is now in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura, built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage is battered by the loss of their son, Dino. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge another with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers' passions to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia. Starring Adam Driver as Enzo, Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, and Sarah Gordon as Linda Christian, plus Gabriel Leone, Jack O'Connell, Patrick Dempsey, and Gabriel Leone. Huh – so is there a single actual Italian person in this cast at all? This is a very nice dialogue free teaser trailer, except for the last line, I just hope this film is actually good. Cute Trailer for RomCom 'What Happens Later' - Directed by Meg Ryan

What Happens Later Trailer
"'Are you happy?' isn't that the one question we should be asking each other?" Bleecker Street has revealed an official trailer for an airport romantic comedy titled What Happens Later, the second film directed by actress Meg Ryan (following Ithaca). Willa and Bill are ex-lovers that will see each other for the first time in years when they both find themselves snowed in, while in-transit, at a small regional airport overnight. Meg Ryan directs and co-writes and also stars as Willa, with David Duchovny co-starring as Bill. They are the only ones in the cast because it's about these two as they spend the night at the airport and wander around talking about life and love and everything else. It looks charming, trying to be a "snowed in" version of the Before Sunrise series, but without any of the same authenticity and intelligence as Linklater's movies. // Continue Reading ›

Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for an acclaimed documentary titled Invisible Beauty, which first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It also stopped by the Sarasota, San Francisco, Tribeca, and Hot Docs Film Festivals this year. Early reviews say that the film "allows the audience to experience the fashion industry from the 70s to the current through the eyes of a true pioneer and disruptor." She sounds radical. Interviews with industry players speak to the state of fashion, while friends and family attest to Hardison’s rebellious and ambitious spirit. Aaron Eckhart in Police Dog Revenge Action Thriller 'Muzzle' Trailer

Muzzle Trailer
"Fire me. I could care less." RLJE Films has unveiled an official trailer for Muzzle, a dog thriller starring Aaron Eckhart. This is the latest film directed by a filmmaker named John Stalberg Jr., who first made his mark with the stoner comedy HIGH School back in 2010. How's this for a wild pitch: LAPD K-9 officer Jake Rosser and his K-9 partner Ace battle it out on the streets of LA when they get into a shootout with local gangsters and Ace is shot. In a moment of crisis, Jake assaults an EMT, resulting in him taking leave from the force. Blocked by Internal Affairs, muzzled by his own superiors from finding the shooter's identity, Jake resolves to go rogue and partners with “Socks”, a violent K-9 with titanium incisors and a mysterious past. Jake and Socks uncover a vast conspiracy that has a chokehold on the city, plummeting deep into a sinister underworld. Along with Eckhart, the film stars Stephen Lang, Penelope Mitchell, Diego Tinoco, Paul Johansson, Hemky Madera, and Kyle Smithson. Okay, what, this looks awesome?! Kind of like John Wick (this is what happens when you kill someone's dog) but about a cop going rogue and getting revenge. // Continue Reading ›

Gritty Crime Thriller from Australia Set in a Truck - 'Mercy Road' Trailer

Mercy Road Trailer
"Tell me what you want!" "Don't ever stop driving." An official trailer is out for an indie crime thriller from Australia titled Mercy Road, the latest film made by director John Curran (of The Painted Veil, Tracks, Chappaquiddick). Not to be confused with Jim Cummings' Thunder Road. This recently premiered at the Melbourne Film Festival and already opened in Australia this month, with a US release coming up soon. In Curran's thriller Mercy Road – an unrelentingly tense psychological thriller – Luke Bracey plays a flawed everyday man who commits an impulsive and vicious crime. In this ultimate journey to redemption, he soon learns just how far he is willing to go to save his child. The cast includes Huw Higginson, Susie Porter, Alex Malone, Martha Kate Morgan, and Toby Jones. Early reviews are positive, saying "Bracey plays a dad on a mission to save his daughter in this strangely surreal film set mostly in a truck. It’s part-Speed, part-Phone Booth, all nightmare." This looks like Tom Hardy's Locke, but way more intense and horrifying. // Continue Reading ›

Transplant Melodrama 'Ordinary Angels' Trailer #2 with Hilary Swank

Ordinary Angels Trailer
"I have to make it! This is our last chance. If we don't take it, Michelle dies!" Lionsgate has debuted a new trailer for Ordinary Angels, a religious drama based on a real medical emergency and struggling family. Arriving in theaters nationwide starting this October, sticking with this date despite the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. Inspired by the true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly rallies an entire community to help a widowed father save the life of his critically ill daughter who desperately needs a liver transplant. "Faith can make the impossible possible," is the tagline. This is leaning heavy on the religious side of the story, which means they will get the attention of many faithful Americans. The movie stars Hilary Swank as Sharon Steves, with Alan Ritchson, Nancy Travis, Tamala Jones, & Amy Acker, plus Skywalker Hughes and Emily Mitchell as the kids. This is as cheesy as they come! Fall Film Festival Season 2023 Begins - 10 Most Anticipated Premieres

Fall Film Festival Preview 2023
It's that time of year again! The fall film festival season is beginning. Starting with the 80th Venice Film Festival this week in Italy, along with the 50th Telluride Film Festival in Colorado – two of the most iconic festivals both celebrating major milestones. Then the 48th Toronto Film Festival will take over in mid-September, before Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX (starting on Sept. 21) and the 61st New York Film Festival in NYC (starting on Sept. 29). This is when all the movies that they've been saving for the end of the year finally make their first appearance, and it's an exciting time for cinephiles who make the voyages to these cities to discover the latest that the world of cinema has to offer us. We've been covering these festivals for the last 17 years - can't miss them. In the midst of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes (which we fully support!) the finished films must premiere anyway. I'd prefer it if there weren't any red carpets, so we can actually focus on the films, but a few of the premieres have been given exceptions from SAG. I'll be back in Venice to watch films during the festival - though this list contains films from all of these upcoming fests. // Continue Reading ›

Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus Teaser
"His last gift to the world..." A teaser trailer has debuted for the documentary film Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, which is premiering at the 2023 Venice Film Festival beginning this week (it screens on Sept. 5). The iconic Japanese composer passed away in March of 2023 from cancer at the age of 71. In the years leading up to his death, Sakamoto could no longer perform live but in the final months of his life he mustered his strength to deliver one final performance for the concert film titled, simply, Opus. It features Sakamoto and his piano alone on a stage, performing twenty of his compositions. The production featured a crew of nearly 30 people headed by American cinematographer Bill Kirstein, who shot the film using three 4K cameras. This magnificent, timeless doc film features a number of works that Sakamoto had not previously played as solo piano performances, including The Wuthering Heights (1992) and Ichimei – Small Happiness (2011), as well as a new arrangement for the 1978 Yellow Magic Orchestra track "Tong Poo". This isn't the first doc made about him - Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda (which is also a must watch) debuted back in 2017. Listen in. 🎶 // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Donyale Luna: Super Model' Doc Film from HBO

Donyale Luna: Super Model Trailer
"Where are you from?" "My name is Luna. I'm from the Moon." HBO has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Donyale Luna: Super Model, from filmmaker Nailah Jefferson. This premiered at the 2023 American Black Film Festival earlier this year, and will be out for streaming to watch on Max in September. The film explores the amazing life & career of Donyale Luna, as one of the first Black models to appear on the cover of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in Europe. Originally born as Peggy Ann Freeman in Detroit, Michigan, she made the cover of the British edition of Vogue in March 1966. Luna entered modeling in a period that favored "white passing models" and has been described as "the first Black model who really began to change things; to enable more diverse beauty paradigms to break through." She appeared on 11 fashion magazine covers between 1965 and 1975. Some may know about "Onyx the Fortuitous" - he's already a viral sensation online, a mad creation of comedian / actor / filmmaker Andrew. Fest Trailer for 'Europa' Film About a Mysterious Corporation in Albania

Europa Trailer
"Albanian tradition. She should show respect." Memento Films has revealed a festival promo trailer for a film titled Europa, the latest from an Austrian-Iranian filmmaker named Sudabeh Mortezai. This recently premiered at the 2023 Sarajevo Film Festival, with extra stops at more European fests in the fall. Not to be confused with the harrowing refugees in Europe thriller also titled Europa from just last year. This Austrian production is about a woman named Beate, played by Lilith Stangenberg, an ambitious executive working at "Europa", a mysterious multi-national corporation looking to expand into the Balkans region. Seemingly promoting philanthropy, Europa actually needs to buy off lands from locals in a remote valley in Albania. She encounters pushback from a local farmer who refuses to leave the land of his ancestors and refuses any deal. The cast includes Jetnor Gorezi, Steljona Kadillari, Mirando Sylari, and Tobias Winter. This reminds me of Toni Erdmann, but with a much more serious story. Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer for the film Rustin, which is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival kicking off next week. It's also likely to have its first premiere at the Telluride Film Festival later this week. The talented Colman Domingo stars in a powerful lead role as Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who organized the famous 1963 March on Washington. It's co-written by Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote the superb Milk, also about a gay politician, which won him the Oscar in 2009. Kelsey Gunn Befriends a Little Mouse in Strange 'Little Jar' Film Trailer

This first premiered at the 2022 Austin Film Festival last fall, and it also played at last year's Whistler Film Festival and Paris Film Festival earlier this year. Ainsley is a misanthrope who hates people but when she suddenly finds herself in isolation with no one to talk to, she realizes how much she actually misses connection. With a little bit of loneliness, a pinch of imagination, and a mouse-sized tuxedo, Ulysses becomes her training wheels in this newly discovered world of friendship. Starring Kelsey Gunn, Nicholas Anthony Reid, Jon Snow, Anthony Ma, Jennifer DeFilippo, and Doug Hurley. Kino Lorber has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Radical Wolfe, a compelling profile of the iconic writer / journalist Tom Wolfe. New Trailer for Serial Killer Thriller Film 'Saturn Bowling' from France

Saturn Bowling
"He keeps pursuing me. He won't stop." Dark Star Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for a French horror thriller film titled Saturn Bowling, not to be confused with the alternate title Saturday Bowling. From French writer / director Patricia Mazuy, this serial killer thriller premiered at the Locarno and Busan Film Festivals last year, and opened in France already late last year. Police detective Guillaume decides to gift the family bowling alley to his estranged half-brother, Armand, following the death of their father. Their already contentious relationship is further strained by a series of murders that transform a tense drama into a twisty neo-noir as Guillaume's investigation brings him deeper into conflict with his brother. The brothers will have to face their own demons. Starring Arieh Worthalter, Achille Reggiani, Y-Lan Lucas, Leïla Muse, and Frédéric van den Driessche. This powerful horror looks like it gets quite scary and shocking. // Continue Reading ›

WB Delays Release of Villeneuve's 'Dune: Part Two' until March 2024

Dune: Part Two News
"May thy knife chip and shatter." Oh no - it's official from Warner Bros. They're delaying Dune: Part Two until 2024 due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in Hollywood. I hoped this wouldn't happen. Denis Villeneuve's highly anticipated epic sci-fi sequel was originally set to open in theaters worldwide on November 1st, 2023 later this fall. There were already two exceptional trailers released so far, promising what looked to be an exhilarating finale to this space saga with Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides on Arrakis. Unfortunately, with such a huge ensemble cast and no ability to get them involved in promoting the movie during the strike, they are going to try and wait it out. The new Dune 2 release date is now set for March 15th, 2024, and WB has also pushed the Godzilla x Kong sequel back a few weeks. A real shame, sad to see this decision take precedent. As many have pointed out, this is Hollywood making all the wrong choices now - via Twitter: "Hollywood would rather risk hundreds of millions of dollars, cripple big releases with weaker release dates, and reconfigure their entire schedules than pay their workers a fair wage." Yep... // Continue Reading ›

Mena Suvari & Blaine Morris in 'Dark Obsession' Thriller Official Trailer

Dark Obsession Trailer
"He wouldn't leave without telling anybody..." Or would he...? An official trailer has debuted for an indie psychological thriller film with the most obvious and generic title ever – Dark Obsession, made by British filmmaker George Henry Horton. Not to be confused with any other dark obsession thrillers with a similar title, including 1989's Dark Obsession. A painter struggles with inner demons after being forced into a life of solitude when her husband leaves mysteriously. Do answers lie with her mother, who desperately tries to connect with her, or also her fearful neighbor? "When we first started filming, we were told by SAG we were the first pandemic film shooting in the whole of the Southern United States. That we pulled it off is nothing short of a testament to the dedication and talent of our wonderful cast and crew," the filmmakers say. This dark mystery thriller stars Blaine Morris, Mena Suvari, Adriana Barraza, and Danielle Harris, with Kathleen Kinmont & Luke Barnett. Doesn't look like there's much of anything to see here. Move along. // Continue Reading ›

Emilia Jones Goes on a Date with a Strange Man in 'Cat Person' Trailer

Cat Person Trailer
"This is the worst life decision I've ever made..." Rialto Pictures has revealed the official trailer for the Cat Person movie, adapted from the famous New Yorker article of the same name. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it opens in theaters starting in October. When Margot, a college sophomore goes on a date with the older Robert, she finds IRL Robert doesn't live up to the Robert she has been flirting with over texts. A razor-sharp exploration of the horrors of dating. "Like the short story that stirred so much controversy, Cat Person will call upon you to reflect on romantic encounters you've had in the past, and to question the role (or multiple roles) you may have played. We've all been the victim in some narratives and the villain in others..." The film stars Emilia Jones as Margot, Nicholas Braun as Robert, Geraldine Viswanathan, Isabella Rossellini, Fred Melamed, Liza Koshy, and Michael Gandolfini. The poster art is also a direct reference to the kiss photo New Yorker used for the story from 2017. I saw this at Sundance and did not like it at all. It tries to be cleverer than it is, with a bad mix of ideas. // Continue Reading ›

Creepy Hallucinogenic Horror 'Black Mold' Trailer with Agnes Albright

Black Mold Trailer
"Danger! Microbial hazard!" Raven Banner has unveiled an early teaser trailer for Black Mold, an indie horror film from filmmaker John Pata. This first premiered at Panic Fest 2023 earlier in the year, and is also playing at FrightFest in the UK coming up soon. While exploring a decrepit and abandoned facility, an auspicious photographer faces off against her traumatic past. Brooke and her friend Tanner end up trapped inside of the old facility by a "volatile threat" - the longer their attacker keeps them in there, the more it becomes clear there’s something else profoundly wrong with the place... The film stars Agnes Albright, Andrew Bailes, Caito Aase, Maisie Merlock, and Jeremy Holm. FrightFest says this "introduces the pitfalls of urban exploration with hallucinogenic psychological horror." All the gross mold is freaky enough. // Continue Reading ›

Saoirse Ronan & Paul Mescal in Sci-Fi Romance Movie 'Foe' Trailer

Foe Trailer
"Do you really want to leave her here alone, day after day?" Amazon Studios + MGM have unveiled the first official trailer for Foe, a new romantic drama from acclaimed filmmaker Garth Davis (of of the films Lion and Mary Magdalene before this). It's currently set to premiere at the New York Film Festival, and could also show up at the Telluride Film Festival this fall, before opening in theaters this October. "Some people are made for each other." Set in 2065, Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior's family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger shows up at their door with a startling, inexplicable proposal. This stars Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre. This trailer doesn't hold back on introducing the sci-fi side of this film, set in the future one of them is being asked to join a space voyage - so they'll create a robot replica of the other to stay with them on Earth. Interesting idea. The tone of this reminds me of Never Let Me Go in many ways - looks good. // Continue Reading ›

Second Trailer for 'The Equalizer 3' - Denzel Washington vs the Mafia

The Equalizer 3 Trailer
"Because of these people, I'm beginning to understand real peace... I believe this is where I'm supposed to be." Sounds good - I think we all feel like we're "supposed to be" settling down somewhere nice in Italy. Sony UK has debuted a second official trailer for The Equalizer 3, arriving in theaters in just a few more weeks. He's taking on the ENTIRE mafia in this one. The sequel to The Equalizer (2014) and The Equalizer 2 (2018), originally loosely based on the 1980s TV series, sees Robert McCall in Italy taking on an entirely different kind of crime kingpin. After settling down in Southern Italy, his friends start to end up dead and he realizes he must now confront the dangerous Italian mafia head on. Denzel Washington returns, with a full cast including Dakota Fanning, Sonia Ben Ammar, Remo Girone, Andrea Dodero, Eugenio Mastrandrea, and Andrea Scarduzio. This seems like it might be badass!! Not sure if the action or the story will be any good. From the looks of it - it'll be very entertaining watching McCall take out Italy's Mafia. // Continue Reading ›

"When you celebrate, fear has to go away, and all you have is delight." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the first official trailer for a music biopic documentary called Carlos, about the famous Mexican musician / guitarist Carlos Santana. Made by the filmmaker Rudy Valdez, this initially premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival earlier in the summer, with a release coming up this September. The electric documentary Carlos utilizes new interviews with Santana and his family alongside extraordinary, never-before-seen archival footage — including home video recordings Santana himself made, concert footage, and behind- the-scenes moments. Emmy-winning director Rudy Valdez creates an intimate, rich documentary about a man whose sound casts a magical spell on his fans around the world. First Teaser Trailer for J.A. Bayona's 'Society of the Snow' Survival Film

Society of the Snow Trailer
"What happened to us? What happens when the world deserts you?" Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Spanish director J.A. Bayona's latest film titled Society of the Snow, returning to his Spanish-language roots for a thriller set in the mountains of Chile. It's premiering as the final film at the 2023 Venice Film Festival next month. Based on a true story. In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been flying a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes mountains. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. A story of endurance and perseverance in one of the world's toughest environments to survive in. Always so crazy. The film's complete ensemble cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Agustín Pardella, Matías Recalt, Esteban Bigliardi, Rafael Federman, Fernando Contigiani García, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Valentino Alonso, Tomás Wolf, Agustín Della Corte, Felipe Otaño, Andy Pruss, Blas Polidori, Felipe Ramusio, & Simón Hempe. 'The Saint of Second Chances' Doc Trailer About Baseball's Mike Veeck

The Saint of Second Chances Trailer
"This is the true story of a family of baseball hustlers." "All that laughter and fun was going to save us." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary called The Saint of Second Chances, arriving for streaming in September. An intriguing doc film telling an unexpected story about someone most people probably aren't familiar with. Mike Veeck, the son of legendary Major League Baseball owner Bill Veeck, blows up his father's career and then spends the next few decades learning the value of a second chance. Co-directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Won't You Be My Neighbor?) and Jeff Malmberg (Marwencol, Spettacolo), narrated by Jeff Daniels, and featuring Charlie Day starring as a younger Mike Veeck (in recreation scenes), The Saint of Second Chances is wildly unexpected, full of heart, and keeps you laughing through a comeback story unlike any other. Lock 'n Load: Trailer #2 for 'Expend4bles' Action Sequel with Lundgren

Expend4bles Trailer #2
"Enjoy the show!!" Lionsgate has dropped off a second official trailer for Expend4bles, also known as The Expendables 4, arriving in theaters nationwide this September. They're not delaying this one. It's a full-on red band trailer packed with violence and blood galore, as they are promoting this as the first R-rated Expendables movie. It still looks as dumb as all the others before it. New actions stars join all the old action stars in this latest explosively violent action extravaganza. The last one, The Expendables 3, opened in 2014 - almost 10 years ago. In this one, The Expendables have to rescue a ship carrying nuclear cargo (looks like they barley get away based on the one shot in this). Starring Jason Statham, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren (with his tongue flying out in this trailer), Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, with Andy Garcia, and the "OG" Expendable, Sylvester Stallone. In addition to all the bad performances, the CGI blood and entirely fake violence really doesn't make me interested in watching this at all. It looks like some seriously dumb action fun, but that's the most I can say. // Continue Reading ›

Mads Mikkelsen in 'The Promised Land' Trailer - Premiering in Venice

The Promised Land Trailer
"Stay off the heath." Zentropa in Denmark has revealed the first trailer for a film called The Promised Land, which will be premiering at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. The latest feature from Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel (Truth About Men, A Royal Affair, The Dark Tower) is playing in the Main Competition - kicking off next week. The film is set in the late 1700s and is a tale of royalty and servants. It tells the story of Ludvig Kahlen who pursued his lifelong dream: To make the heath bring him wealth & honor. The heath they refer to is a wild & dry land, created by Stone Age farmers who unknowingly exhausted the Danish farm lands (more info here). Mads Mikkelsen stars as Kahlen, with Amanda Collin, Simon Bennebjerg, Kristine Kujath Thorp, and Gustav Lindh. Arcel introduces the film: "Aided by Ida Jessen’s brilliant novel, Anders Thomas Jensen and I wanted to tell a grand, epic tale about how our ambitions and desires will inevitably fail if they are all we have. Life is chaos; painful and unpleasant, beautiful and extraordinary, and we often cannot control it. As the saying goes, 'We make plans and God laughs.'" Looks brutal & intense. // Continue Reading ›

Fabulous Trailer for John Carney's 'Flora and Son' Starring Eve Hewson

Flora and Son Trailer
"How come 'the way things are' are never enough for you?" Apple has revealed the first official trailer for Flora and Son, the latest musical experience from acclaimed Irish filmmaker John Carney (best known for Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street). This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, as a last minute addition, and ended up being one of my favorite films of the festival. I really fell for it. "Never underestimate a Dublin woman with a guitar." The charming musical comedy follows Flora, played by Eve Hewson (Bono's daughter) a single mom who is at war with her son, Max. Trying to find a hobby for Max, she rescues a guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person's trash can be a family's salvation. She also strikes up a virtual relationship with a musician, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who teaches her how to play the guitar. The small cast includes Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor, and Amy Huberman. This is as uplifting and heartfelt and musically invigorating as any of Carney's past films. It's worth a watch. // Continue Reading ›

The book's description explains: "Shattered by the discovery of her husband's affair, Liv knows they need to leave the chaos of New York to save their marriage. Still Up Trailer
"I don't think you know what it's like for your partner to come alive as soon as you go to bed." Apple has unveiled an official trailer for a streaming series called Still Up, a British comedy featuring episodes directed by newcomer John Addis. This seems like a big pitch original idea, that will either become a big hit or being forgotten quickly. Bonded by insomnia, best friends Lisa (an impulsive & free-spirited aspiring illustrator) and Danny (a socially anxious yet gifted journalist) stay connected to each other late into the night and find their way through a world of wonderfully weird surprises as their relationship deepens. There are no secrets, except their feelings for each other, and while the world sleeps they spend their long nights talking despite never meeting. Antonia Thomas & Craig Roberts star as Lisa & Danny, with Blake Harrison, Lois Chimimba, Luke Fetherston, & Samantha Spiro. "You're pushing things. The other wrestlers think you're getting too big." Let's goooo Cassandro!! Amazon's Prime Video has revealed the first official trailer for a film titled Cassandro, which originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. I watched this and loved it, still on my Best of 2023 list. It really won me over, and got me all emotional, too. Oscar-winning doc filmmaker Roger Ross Williams (Life, Animated) makes his fiction directorial debut with the real-life tale of Cassandro, the "Liberace of lucha libre," crafting an "engaging origin story" for an outsider turned unlikely superstar. Gael García Bernal embodies the two distinct sides of Saúl, capturing both his feelings of otherness and the boisterous ring persona who embraces & revels in his difference. The true story of Cassandro, the ''exotico'' character of Saúl Armendáriz, a gay wrestler from El Paso. The full cast includes Roberta Colindrez, Raúl Castillo, Perla De La Rosa, Joaquín Cosio, Bad Bunny, and the real "Gigantico" lucha from Mexico. First Teaser Trailer for 'Good Burger 2' Sequel with Kenan & Kel Back

Good Burger 2 Teaser
"Hey, man, you almost Car Burger'd me to death!" Paramount+ has unveiled an early first look teaser for the comedy sequel Good Burger 2, arriving to stream on Paramount+ later this fall. Even more nostalgia mining to turn into streaming content, digging up a comedy classic that really didn't need a sequel. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are back again as Dexter Reed and Ed, following up the events of the first film, now 26 years later. Of course. It's a sequel to the film Good Burger (from 1997), which was itself based on a comedy sketch from on the Nickelodeon series All That. The sequel's cast also includes Josh Server, Lori Beth Denberg, Alex R. Hibbert, Kamaia Fairburn, plus Jillian Bell as an evil CEO, Lil Rel Howery as the CEO's lawyer, and Carmen Electra. The original director isn't back, though two of the writers are, if that's any consolation. Britt Robertson in 'The Re-Education of Molly Singer' Comedy Trailer

The Re-Education of Molly Singer Trailer
"We all deserve a second chance at a first impression." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for an indie college comedy titled The Re-Education of Molly Singer, made by filmmaker Andy Palmer. His entire filmography isn't impressive, which should be a sign of what to expect with this. To save her job, a young lawyer must go undercover, enrolling as a freshman at her old alma mater, in order to resuscitate the well being of her Boss' terribly awkward teenage son. Molly goes to battle with stuck-up hall monitors, boozed-up frat brothers, and her old archenemy in a hilarious quest through the past to save her future. The comedy stars Jaime Pressly as Brenda, Ty Simpkins as Elliot, Britt Robertson as Molly Singer, Nico Santos, Cierra Ramirez, Jonathan Lipnicki, and Wendie Malick. This sounds like the copy cat junk version of Jennifer Lawrence's No Hard Feelings, similar concept about a woman having to initiate a teen boy. This looks so bad, derivative in 100 ways, ripping off every other comedy without an ounce of originality. Oy vey. // Continue Reading ›
