Let's kick off the New Year with a mesmerizing and unique stop-motion short Freeze Frame by animator / filmmaker Soetkin Verstegen based in Brussels. "This chilly 5-minute experimental animation was literally created out of ice sculptures and puppets frozen inside frames of ice!" Freeze Frame is described by Soetkin as "miniature cinema inside an ice cube", with an old school, grainy black & white look and feel. It's also described as "a playful puzzle with formal ideas around early cinema, decay and preservation." I love coming across short films that are unlike anything else I've ever seen, because innovation often comes from experimentation. This is not only a study in preservation, but also an intriguing examination of the art of ice harvesting. A long, lost profession. Throughout 2020, we got to see new work from visionary filmmakers like Spike Lee, David Fincher, Chloe Zhao, Regina King, Lee Isaac Chung, Emerald Fennell, and Oz Perkins, whose dark fairytale Gretel & Hansel is one of the most atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing horror movies of 2020. We also witnessed great performances from Viola Davis, Delroy Lindo, Frances McDormand, Chadwick Boseman, Carey Mulligan, Riz Ahmed, Gary Oldman, Elisabeth Moss, and Steven Yeun. And we were left in awe by cinematic art like Mank, News of the World, The Midnight Sky, Emma – works of impeccable craftsmanship by the cinematographers, production designers, SFX artists, and costume designers alike. ›››

First Trailer for Oz Western Thriller 'The Furnace' with David Wenham

"You get me there… you get what's yours." Signature Entertainment has released a new official UK trailer for a western thriller titled The Furnace, made by Australian filmmaker Roderick MacKay. This originally premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival. The Furnace is a tense Western set in the 1890s gold rush of Western Australia. To escape the outback, a young Afghan cameleer named Hamif falls in with a mysterious bushman on the run with two bars of stolen Crown gold. The film stars David Wenham, Ahmad Malek, Jay Ryan, Mahesh Jadu, and Baykali Ganambarr. Well now, this looks pretty damn good! Yet another Australian western confronting racism and the horrible past of Australia and the white men who killed many years ago. First Look Teaser Trailer for 'Black Wood' South Dakota Western Film

"So as you travel forth from here, please take caution… There are many legends about the Black Wood…" R.E.C. Entertainment has released an early first look teaser trailer for an indie western horror-thriller titled Black Wood, from filmmaker Chris Canfield making his feature directorial debut. This hasn't premiered at any festivals or anywhere else, but it is expected to debut soon this year. The film is about Dowanhowee, a Native American Sioux woman, who evades the notorious Dutch Wilder Gang after they murder her family by escaping into the uncharted Black Wood Forest. Once inside, they quickly discover they must help each other for they have unknowingly awoken an ancient ravenous creature – known as The Wendigo. Starring Tanajsia Slaughter as Dowanhowee, along with Bates Wilder, Stelio Savante, David Fralick, and Glenn Morshower. It's only a quick 30-sec teaser, but the footage does look good and sufficiently brutal. ›››
