2026 Cannes Film Festival Selection - Hamaguchi, Hong-jin, Dupieux

Every year, cinephiles wake up early for the announcement from France of the films playing at the Cannes Film Festival. For the 79th Cannes Film Festival taking place this May, they have revealed an intriguing selection of very diverse international films, featuring new works from well-established filmmakers (they love them), as well as some newcomers getting their chance to shine on the Croisette. Cannes is continuing in its usual spot in mid-May, running from May 12th to 23rd, kicking things off a French film on opening night about a romance in the 1920s (called The Electric Kiss). Just over a month to go until the fest begins on the Mediterranean coast. The selection last year included many major highlights of 2025 cinema - such as Eddington, The Mastermind, Resurrection, Sirat, Sentimental Value, Exit 8, and many others. This year I'm looking forward to discovering real surprises. Along with fresh films from fave filmmakers like Lukas Dhont (of Girl, Close), Léa Mysius (Ava, The Five Devils), Na Hong-jin (The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, The Wailing), Asghar Farhadi (A Separation, The Salesman). Charming Trailer for 'Captain Tsunami' Film - A Comic Book Mystery

The story is about Richard Russell, who stole a Horizon Air Bombardier Q400 plane at the airport in August 2018 and went for a joyride before crashing it. This doc also marks the first time many members of Russell's family have spoken publicly about his story. First Discoveries in 'Backrooms' Viral Marketing - Cap'n Clark's Video

"The only thing you'll be wanting – is more space to keep it all!" Well this is getting interesting. A24 has quietly debuted a sneaky viral marketing promo for the upcoming Backrooms movie – making everything even more intriguing. The most recent official trailer just arrived last week for this horror sci-fi feature film created by young YouTuber "Kane Pixels" based on his own "backrooms" creations previously. Some users online found this viral video - a 30 sec vintage 90s commercial taped on VHS for "Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire, which is the store that Chiwetel Ejiofor's character Clark works at (from the start of the trailer). The video has Ejiofor in it performing his funny spiel about coming to buy furniture at his store. The plot of the film involves him discovering an eerie, mysterious series of "backrooms" inside his store that go on & on seemingly forever. I'm actually a big fan of this movie – I loved it when it came out in 1998 and watched it quite a few times back then. Soldier is one of director Paul W.S. Anderson's 90s extra cheesy action movies – yes it's dumb and campy but fun and kind of endearing cause this soldier has a soft side. After the one-two punch of Mortal Kombat & Event Horizon, W.S. Anderson teamed up with iconic action star Kurt Russell and writer David Webb Peoples (Blade Runner, Unforgiven) for the thrilling sci-fi adventure. Unfortunately it was a huge box office bomb. Oh well. A soldier trained from birth is deemed obsolete and dumped on a waste planet where he is reluctantly taken in by a community of defenseless, stranded wayfarers. First Teaser for Ryusuke Hamaguchi's 'All of a Sudden' Film Set in Paris

Well this looks wonderful already! An early teaser trailer has debuted for the latest film from Oscar winning Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi that is coming out this summer in Japan. After making Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist, his next film is titled All of a Sudden and it's set in Paris and shot in the French language (along with Japanese of course). Two scholars exchange letters about chance and risk. As the philosopher falls ill, their academic correspondence evolves into intimate discussions about mortality & a deeper connection forms between them. The film is loosely inspired by a collection letters written between philosopher Makiko Miyano and medical anthropologist Maho Isono which were published in the book "You and I – The Illness Suddenly Get Worse." The letters cover Miyano and Isono's thoughts on life, illness and death as Miyano fought metastatic breast cancer. The film reinterprets the story following these two getting to know each other in Paris walking around & discussing things. Starring Virginie Efira, Tao Okamoto, Kyōzō Nagatsuka, Teruyo Kurosaki. And it will feature a score by Canadian-French composer Samuel Andreyev. This film is set for a Japanese release in June and is expected to premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The couple who lost their son welcomed in a humanoid. Sheep in the Box is Koreeda's take on AI and recreating lost loved ones with tech - a family brings back their son as a robot. "This project began with the idea of 'bringing the dead back to life using the latest technology,'" he explains. "I was interested in exploring the conflicting perspectives [about] how technological advancement clashes with human inner values.... With technology evolving at a pace far beyond what I had imagined, I felt that this reality might arrive sooner than expected." Another one of these trashy action projects that seems like it was made for barely anyone to actually watch – only for the cast to make money. Captain Jordan Wright's (Sutherland) squadron on leave for a wedding in Mexico encounters a murderous cartel. As Jordan tries to lead survivors to safety, war erupts between his squad and the cartel, forcing him into a battle to save his men. That sounds like a very jingoistic, violence-obsessed story.
