KVIFF 2024: Lilja Ingolfsdottir's 'Loveable' is a Fresh Look at Love

There are an endless number of movies about relationships, marriage, divorce, intimacy, sex, attraction, and compatibility. It is therefore a considerable challenge to create a brand new film that is unique in the way it examines modern relationships and the people involved in them. Loveable (originally Elskling) is one such unique film from Norway written and directed by filmmaker Lilja Ingolfsdottir. It premiered at the 2024 Karloff Vary Film Festival in their main Crystal Globe Competition section, and I am glad I took the time to watch it at the festival. Loveable is the story of a couple named Maria and Sigmund, who are now feeling overwhelmed by a life with four kids in total and work and everything stressful that comes with parenthood. While the intro describes it as a divorce film, it's not really a divorce film (in the way that Marriage Story is). Loveable is an engaging film that follows Maria as she re-examines her life and her relationship when confronted with the frightening threat of divorce. Netflix has debuted an amusing 80s throwback trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the long-awaited new sequel in the Beverly Hills Cop series. The movie is now playing on Netflix and can be enjoyed worldwide. This smashing new follow-up (BHC4!) picks up right where things left off with Axel Foley as he returns to his old stomping grounds in SoCal for more mayhem. When his daughter is threatened, he is drawn back to the many opulent environs of Beverly Hills to investigate the untimely demise of a long-time confidant. She & Foley team up with a new partner to turn up the heat & uncover a conspiracy. Eddie Murphy is back as Foley for the fourth time, after first taking on the role in the 1984 comedy classic. The new cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his new partner, Taylour Paige, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, Paul Reiser, and Kevin Bacon. This is probably the best trailer of all of them released for this movie, though I'm missing more 80s graphics and VHS quality to make it entirely authentic. Happy to report the movie is good fun! Scary First Trailer for High Tech AIA Horror 'Afraid' Starring John Cho

"What did you do?!" "I did what's best for my family." Blumhouse has revealed the first official trailer for a high tech horror movie called Afraid, formerly known as They Listen. It's set to open in theaters in late August at the end of this summer. In Afraid, the Curtis' family is selected to test a new home device: a digital assistant called AIA. AIA learns the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she will also make sure that nothing – and no one – gets in her family's way. This sounds a lot like Blumhouse's M3gan but instead of a doll, a digital assistance device in the shape of an oval. In addition to John Cho, the cast includes Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, with David Dastmalchian and Keith Carradine. This looks like it has all the expected cheesy A.I.-horror tropes worked into it, with advanced tech turning evil and messing with this family any way it can think of. A.I. is bad! New Trailer for Abel Gance's 'Napoléon' Full 7-Hour-Long Restoration

Pathe in France has unveiled a brand new official trailer for the epic 7 hour complete restoration of cinema classic Napoléon, better known as Abel Gance's Napoléon. Everyone who studies cinema knows about this film - it's widely considered one of the greatest historical epics in all of cinema history. This most recent restoration brings together the "Grande Version" - the Napoleonic epic of Abel Gance in its new & definitive version. Here's the full intro: "After 16 years of an unprecedented collective adventure in the history of La Cinémathèque Française, the public is finally invited to come and judge a film that no one has ever seen since 1927. An exemplary reconstruction led by Georges Mourier, and featuring a new score due to the talent of Simon Cloquet-Lafollye, recorded by musicians from the Radio France orchestras." Starring Albert Dieudonné as the French icon Napoléon Bonaparte, this latest version was screened at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and it will play in French cinemas this month. No US release is set as far as we know yet. The $3 million restoration took more than a decade to finish. Mormon WWII Historical Drama Movie 'Escape from Germany' Trailer

"Tell our missionaries to get out!" Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed the official trailer for a new WWII historical drama titled Escape from Germany, made by a Mormon filmmaker named T.C. Christensen. It's set for a VOD release in August – though it doesn't seem worth the rental price. Escape from Germany is the story of the LDS West German Mission evacuation of 1939 which occurred only days before the Nazi invasion of Poland. Hitler's army was closing borders, and 85 (although the trailer says it's 79?) American missionaries were in Germany serving their church. The escape of these missionaries from Nazi Germany is one of the most dramatic events to occur in modern church history. The last one got out and into Denmark on August 31. The next day Germany invaded Poland and the war began. Starring Paul Wuthrich, David Shawn McConnell, Landon Henneman, Sebastian Barr, Henning Fischer, Kevin Kirshemann, Whitney Palmer, and Brad Witbeck. First Trailer for Audrey Diwan's 'Emmanuelle' Starring Noémie Merlant

Pathe in France has revealed the first official trailer for the new take on Emmanuelle, an erotic drama inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan's beloved novel. It was already adapted once before into a film in 1974, also titled Emmanuelle, though this is a fresh vision. From the Golden Lion winning filmmaker of Happening comes a new Emmanuelle, starring the French actress Noémie Merlant as the woman on a trip to Hong Kong exploring her sexual desires. Loosely adapted from Arsan's novel, director Audrey Diwan's film follows a woman flying alone to Hong Kong on a business trip where she initiates numerous encounters including with Kei, a man who constantly eludes her. Merlant co-stars with Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, Jamie Campbell Bower, Chacha Huang, Anthony Wong, among others. Nobody is ready for the mayhem & surprises that ensue when 6 of the worst youngsters disrupt the town's yearly Christmas performance. The actual pageant is full of surprises for everyone, starting with the Herdmans themselves, as they ultimately lead the town in finding the true meaning of Christmas. They will make this year’s pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best ever. Looks like tons of fun. Glover, who also directed a few episodes of his own TV series "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" & "Atlanta", co-stars in this with Jessica Allain. He plays the titular Bando Stone who is found "trying to deliver mail in an abandoned town before crossing paths with one of the only other people around, played by Allain. The two decide to band together, along with Allain's child, to survive monsters, dinosaurs, sci-fi lasers, and more."
