PM leaves for China on four-day visit

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday left for China on a four-day official visit where he will meet Beijing’s top leadership to discuss bilateral ties and sign various agreements.

A high-level delegation - including Finance Minister Asad Umar, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Planning Minister Khusro Bakhtayar, Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed, Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razaq Dawood, and Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal – is accompanying the prime minister.

Imran Khan will meet the head of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. He will also lay floral wreath at the Heroes Monument at Tiananmen Square on November 3.

The premier will meet his Vietnamese counterpart in Shanghai on November 5 and will address the China International Import Expo.

Opposition assures govt of support in prevailing situation

A delegation of government representatives met Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif to brief them on the current situation.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak said the government delegation including Fawad Chaudhry, Ali Muhammad Khan, Tariq Bashir Cheema and Shireen Mazai briefed the opposition parties on the current situation in the country.

He said all opposition parties had a unanimous view that the issue should be addressed, adding that the government did not want to resort to violence against the protesters.

The delegation members during their meeting with Bilawal Bhutto and Khursheed took the opposition figures into confidence on the issue, saying the government had formed a committee to hold negotiations with the demonstrators.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry welcomed opposition’s stance on the issue and said the meetings with Bilawal Bhutto and Shehbaz Sharif were “promising developments”.

“Government and opposition have appointed focal persons. We will try to come up with a joint strategy in order to tackle the protests. Every move will be taken in consultation with parliament,” he added.

Review petition against Asia Bibi's acquittal filed in SC

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court calling for a review of the court's verdict acquitting Asia Bibi, a Christian woman on death row since she was convicted on blasphemy charges in 2010.

Protesters have taken to the streets and blocked roads in major cities of Pakistan since the apex court acquitted Bibi and ordered her release.
n the review plea filed in the apex court's Lahore registry on Thursday, the petitioners urged the court to have Asia Bibi put on the Exit Control List (ECL) and barred from leaving the country until a decision on the petition.

The petitioners argued that Bibi confessed to her crimes during investigation, and that a delay in lodging the First Information Request (FIR) does not imply that the defendant is not guilty of the crime.

The appeal was filed by lawyers representing Qari Salam, who had registered the original blasphemy case against Asia Bibi.

Protest may be end tonight, says Punjab Info Minister

Punjab Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan has informed that sit-in protest against Asia Bibi’s acquittal is expected to end tonight.

The minister said that a review petition against Supreme Court’s verdict has been submitted by three lawyers today (Thursday). An appeal will also be submitted to place name of the accused on Exit Control List (ECL).

"Don’t want anyone to challenge writ of the state," Chohan stated, adding that the government does not intend to use force against protestors.

Earlier, while speaking on the ongoing protests across the country, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry stressed that the government would not allow anyone to challenge the writ of the state.

"We have decided that we will proceed with a strategy on this, and the opposition has ensured us of their complete cooperation," Chaudhry said during a news conference in Islamabad.

Addressing "some elements", the information minister said the government does not want the situation to result in any damage or violence.

It may be mentioned here that protesters have blocked roads in different cities following the Supreme Court’s verdict on Wednesday to acquit Asia Bibi in a case related to blasphemy.

Addressing the National Assembly today, PPP leader Khurshid Shah said protecting and strengthening the state and its institutions is our joint responsibility. He said we should save the country from anarchy and chaos. He said we stand by the state institutions.

However, Khurshid Shah strongly criticized Prime Minister Imran Khan’s address to the nation saying his aggressive posture will not help improve situation in the country.

Responding to the points of the PPP leader, Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood said it is the first time in the country’s history that a strong and clear stand was taken by a Prime Minister that nobody will be allowed to challenge the writ of the state.

He said it is the responsibility of the government to implement the judgement of the Supreme Court in Aasiya Bibi case. He said the opposition parties should not indulge in political point scoring on the matter rather they should sit with the government on matters of national interests.

Google employees walk out of offices against sexual harassment cases

Thousands of Google employees all over the world are walking out of offices in protest against the handling of sexual harassment cases by the management.

The demonstrations started at 11:10am in Tokyo and at other places at the same time zone, the Guardian reported.

Pictures were shared on Twitter of employees in Singapore, Zurich, London, Dublin and other cities, showing a number of men and women participating in the walkout.

The protest, called the The Walkout for Real Change, kickstarted after media reported Google gave a $90 million in severance to Andy Rubin, a director at the company’s X Lab, but concealed sexual harassment allegations against him which led to his firing.

Employees are also demonstrating for equal pay and equal opportunity.

AFP further reported that Google chief executive Sundar Pichai sent out an email to employees on Tuesday vowing to take a “much harder line on inappropriate behaviour”.

"As CEO, it's been personally important to me that we take a much harder line on inappropriate behavior," Pichai said in the message.

He also said he has talked with a lot of staff members on the subject of inappropriate behaviour at work and that the company is "deeply sorry for the past actions and the pain they have caused employees."

Forty-eight employees have been fired by the company in the past two years, including 13 senior executives in sexual harassment cases, the Google CEO added.

The New York Times on October 25 posted an expose at allegations against Rubin, the father of Android, reporting that Google gave him a significant severance package while concealing the allegations. Google had done the same in at least two other cases, the paper reported, and failed to say anything about the sexual harassment allegations against them.
