China's Crazy Remake of Giant Snake Movie 'Anaconda' Official Trailer

Anaconda Remake Trailer
"This isn't your territory. It's their territory." Another international remake of a Hollywood classic! China has already remade the 1997 action-horror film about giant snakes called Anaconda, which was a huge hit when it debuted in the 90s. This new version is similar but follows a group of circus performers stranded in a rainforest. They must figure out how to survive when they discover they're marked as bait for the snakes. This Chinese remake stars Terence Yin, Nita Xia, Paul Che, Jiu Kong, Ken Lok, Wang Xing Chen, Wang Gang, Wang Zi Run, Xu Shao Hang, and Wu Hao. The original movie ended up with a few bad direct-to-video sequels (including Lake Placid vs. Anaconda in 2015) and Hollywood has also been trying to reboot it with screenwriter Evan Daugherty (of Snow White and the Huntsman, Killing Season, Divergent) hired to write a new script. Until then, this Chinese version might be just as ridiculously entertaining as the original, which infamously had a dead Jon Voight winking. Yes, this trailer does have English subtitles in it. // Continue Reading ›

Freaky Trailer for Netflix's 'Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp' Movie

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp Trailer
"This might hurt a little..." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a movie called Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp, another strange hybrid-CGI creation involving the classic animated character Woody Woodpecker (first created in 1940). This looks as weird and wacky as anything can, almost freaky, because it's so absurd and dumb. There was another really bad Woody Woodpecker: The Movie in 2017 as well, now Netflix has their own for everyone to laugh at. Technically this is a sequel to that direct-to-video movie. In Woody Woodpecker Goes To Camp, Woody Woodpecker must find a new home after being kicked out of the forest. At Camp Woo Hoo, he thinks he's found a forever home, but there's an inspector on the loose who wants to shut down the camp. Starring Eric Bauza as the voice of Woody, with Mary-Louise Parker, Josh Lawson, Chloe De Los Santos, Esther Son, Evan Stanhope, Kevin Michael Richardson as Buzz Buzzard + Tom Kenny as Wally Walrus. Will this even be fun to watch? Or just painful? Hard to tell. // Continue Reading ›

Official US Trailer for Jérémie Périn's 'Mars Express' Animated Sci-Fi

Mars Express Trailer
"Humans have always deceived us." GKids has finally revealed the full US trailer for the awesome animated sci-fi film Mars Express from France. It's now set to open in theaters this May - check your local listings. A must watch on the big screen! I've been raving about this film ever since its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year - thrilling sci-fi that is kind of an update on Ghost in the Shell. In the future, private detective Aline Ruby and her android partner are hired by a wealthy businessman to track down a notorious hacker. On Mars, they descend deep into the underbelly of the planet's capital city where they uncover a much darker story of brain farms, corruption, and a missing girl who holds a secret about the robots that threaten to change the face of the universe. "Combining 2D & 3D animation, this stylish, smart, futuristic film noir is an adrenaline-fueled, cinematic adventure, packed with humor and exhilarating action sequences." With the voices of Léa Drucker, Mathieu Amalric, Daniel Njo Lobé, Marie Bouvet, and Sébastien Chassagne. This film rocks (my full review) and I'm happy to support it all the way through its opening. It's pretty much the same trailer as last year, but worth sharing to bring more attention to the film. // Continue Reading ›

Rock History Doc 'Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg' Trailer

Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg Trailer
"She demanded that people follow on her terms..." "We're talking about a 'one-off' here." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the full trailer for documentary film titled Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg, not to be confused with 2013's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. This intimate doc reveals the story of a fierce rock 'n' roller, actress, muse and mother who rose to prominence in the 60s & 70s. It first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and also played at the London Film Festival lat year. Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg is a vital portrait of the charismatic and fierce rock n' roller, actress, muse, and mother who became famous after a chance encounter with the Rolling Stones. Scarlett Johansson voices Anita (based on the words of her unpublished memoir) and the film includes her children, Marlon & Angela Richards, and their father, Keith Richards. Never-seen-before home movies and family photographs explore life with the Rolling Stones and tell a bittersweet tale of both triumph and heartbreak. From Barbarella to the Swiss Alps, and the Lower East Side to London, Anita Pallenberg was a creative force ahead of her time. // Continue Reading ›

Full UK Trailer for Luna Carmoon's Odd Psychological Thriller 'Hoard'

Hoard Trailer
"You're a funny little biscuit." Vertigo Releasing has debuted the full official UK trailer for Hoard, an indie film creation from newcomer writer / director Luna Carmoon, making her feature directorial debut. This premiered in the Critics Week sidebar at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year, with stops at the Athens and London Film Festivals. Not to be confused with the 2018 horror movie The Hoard, or any other horror films. In a fearlessly strange and intense psychological drama a troubled teenager forms an obsessive bond with a mysterious young man at her foster home. Starring Saura Lightfoot Leon as Maria, with Hayley Squires, Joseph Quinn, Lily-Beau Leach, and Samantha Spiro. It's hard to describe this very strange film, which is exceptionally odd and icky at times. Most reviews at festivals last year were positive, saying: "this is unfiltered filmmaking that indulges every storytelling whim, however uncomfortable it might turn out to be." This trailer plays like it is a horror film, though it's a bit more sentimental and bizarre than that. // Continue Reading ›

Snif & Snüf Short Film
Sometimes simple is better. You don't even need any dialogue to tell a story! This amusing new short film is once again an example of the great power of visual storytelling. Snif & Snüf is a 5-minute animated short created by filmmaker / animator Michael Ruocco. He works in the animation industry in Los Angeles as a storyboard artist / animator and dabbles in filmmaking every once in a while with his own shorts (like this one!). This clever Looney Tunes-esque film is about two goofball characters who discover an interesting new object, and learn about what it means to share. It premiered last year and played at a few film festivals and is now online for everyone to enjoy. Full Trailer for 'Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead' Comedy Remake

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead
"You're having parties without me?!" Call everyone - it's time to go wild. Iconic Events Releasing and BET+ have debuted the full official trailer for the Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead remake, arriving in theaters nationwide starting this April. The original Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is an early 90s comedy cult classic featuring Christina Applegate. Produced by BET+, this fresh and sharp reimagining of the 90s wacky comedy is directed by Wade Allain-Marcus (French Dirty) and it will be in theaters before it's streaming. Simone Joy Jones leads in the iconic Christina Applegate role with an ensemble cast including Nicole Richie, June Squibb (playing the titular babysitter), Donielle Tremaine Hensley, Jermaine Fowler, and Ms. Pat, with newcomers Miles Fowler, Iantha Richardson, Gus Kenworthy, Tyriq Withers rounding out the cast. This plays better than the very short teaser, at least, and June Squibb looks hilarious. The rest of it just looks like a gigantic house party movie with all the typical, cheesy kids-go-wild shenanigans you'd expect. Didn't Ritchie Rich already do this better? Ashkasha Short Film
Curiosity might get the best of us sometimes. Will you find your way out if you become too lost in curiosity? This fantastic, funky stop-motion animated short called Ashkasha follows a "being guided by curiosity" who loses her head. It's directed by an Argentinian stop-motion filmmaker named Lara Maltz who now works out of Barcelona. The film has been playing at festivals around the world throughout late 2022 and all of 2023 (including at Sitges and SXSW), finally ending up online for everyone to watch now. Ashkasha is a living being guided by curiosity. This causes her to lose her head and get trapped in the depths, where she is submerged on a discovery journey. When the Cure Became a Cult - 'The Synanon Fix' Documentary Trailer

The Synanon Fix Trailer
"There were rules on which Synanon was founded, and those were solid, until they weren't." Another cult story. Max has revealed an official trailer for a fascinating documentary series called The Synanon Fix, from acclaimed doc filmmaker Rory Kennedy (of Take Every Wave, Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari). This is the latest in the true crime doc subgenre about cults, which I will dub the "true cult" genre. This 4-episode doc series explores the rise & fall of the Synanon organization through the eyes of the members who lived it, from its early days as a groundbreaking drug rehabilitation program to its later descent into what many consider a cult. Obvious that it definitely was one. It recalls the story of a controversial heroin addiction program turned communal living center. Told through first person accounts of former members, this series is about the California rehab center called "Synanon", which grew from a groundbreaking drug rehabilitation program in the 1950s into a communal living experiment that would later be accused of abuse and worse. Of course it was a cult! Another story of a power-hungry maniac. // Continue Reading ›

Lily Gladstone & Riley Keough in 'Under the Bridge' Crime Series Trailer

Under the Bridge Trailer
"There's a darkness in those girls..." Hulu has revealed the full trailer for a true crime series titled Under the Bridge, arriving for streaming in a few weeks in April this spring. While it is a "true crime" story, it's being adapted into a fictional series, so not everything may be as it was in real life. Reena Virk, a fourteen-year-old girl, went to join friends at a party and never returned. Seven teenage girls and a boy were accused of the savage murder on Vancouver Island up in Canada. This Under the Bridge crime series is based on the late Rebecca Godfrey's bestselling book about the 1997 true story of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us deep into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer. Hulu's new series stars Lily Gladstone as Officer Bentland, with Chloe Guidry, Javon "Wanna" Walton, Izzy G., Aiyana Goodfellow, Ezra Faroque Khan, Archie Panjabi and Riley Keough co-starring as the writer Rebecca Godfrey. This looks eerie and unsettling, and the voiceover sets up a "you've gotta watch it and find out" premise about what is happening on this island. // Continue Reading ›

Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an indie border drama titled The Absence of Eden, made by filmmaker Marco Perego. This premiered at a few festivals last year including the Newport Beach Film Festival and is now set for a US release in limited theaters this April. Zoe Saldana stars as a woman who flees across the border, and helps protect a young girl. The cast includes Garrett Hedlund, Adria Arjona, Tom Waits, and Chris Coy. Long enough? Did anyone see the original in theaters? The first Beetlejuice movie opened in 1988 (right before Burton's Batman in 1989) and ended up as a modest success and cult favorite for many fans. The sequel continues the story with the very same family. They find an elderly, mysterious woman who sings songs that have never been heard before, though they also open the door to ancient evil and madness. All You Need is Death is the narrative feature debut from Dublin-based writer/director Paul Duane and stars Olwen Fouéré, Charlie Maher, Simone Collins, and Gary Whelan. Plenty of creepy shots in here, not even sure what's going on. Beware the song. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Comedy Short 'Jimmy Boden' - Snack Size Tester Breaks Down

Jimmy Boden Short Film
"That's 8. Mark it down. Let's continue..." Have you ever looked at a bag of snacks and wondered, how do they come up with the "serving size" count on the nutrition label? There is technically a real answer to this question, but I like the concept in this short much more. Jimmy Boden is a clever short made by a young filmmaker named Chris Pickering. After premiering at the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival and playing at other fests last year, it's available to watch online. An imprisoned government asset, whose sole purpose is determining the serving sizes of snacks, has finally reached his breaking point. "I came up with the idea for Jimmy Boden as I was eating a bag of chips. I looked at the back and noticed the serving size: seven chips. Who ever just eats seven chips?" Indeed. Pickering's friend Andrew Simmons stars as Jimmy. They really got this just right - from the slick set design to the snack "props" to Jimmy's hilarious performance. Aced it. // Continue Reading ›

Full Trailer for True Story 'The Hijacking of Flight 601' from Colombia

The Hijacking of Flight 601 Trailer
"Revolution or death!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a "true crime" series from Colombia titled The Hijacking of Flight 601, based on the true story of a similar flight. Directed by C.S. Prince & Pablo González (The Great Heist), the series is inspired by the longest aerial hijacking in Latin American history, which occurred on May 30th, 1973. SAM Colombia flight HK-1274 with 84 passengers was hijacked between Pereira and Medellin. The hijackers were two former Paraguayan football players who disguised themselves as guerrillas in order to get the ransom and had no political affiliation. The hijack lasted for more than 60 hours and was one of the lengthiest airline hijackings at the time and the longest in distance traveled. Starring Mónica Lopera, Christian Tappan, Enrique Carriazo, Ángela Cano, Marcela Benjumea - among other national & international talent - Hijacking of Flight 601 seeks to keep its audience at the edge of their seats as they discover how this event, that might seem like fiction, actually happened. Have a look. // Continue Reading ›

Vietnamese film critic Nguyên Lê has revealed his Cinema Montage 2023 video, featuring a look at his Top 25 Best Films from last year (+ 2 extras). Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture a few weeks ago, ending the 2023 awards season. Though that doesn't mean we can't still continue to celebrate all the great movies from last year. His video features many of my personal 2023 favorites as well, including: A Thousand and One, American Fiction, Godzilla: Minus One, Past Lives, Perfect Days, The Promised Land, and The Taste of Things. Plus other underrated gems like Polite Society, Sleep, Monster, Knock at the Cabin, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The video comes in under 3 minutes and is a wonderfully short and sweet reminder of all the beauty cinema offers us every year. Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Jim Cummings' Awkward New Comedy Short 'The Last Brunch'

The Last Brunch Short Film
"I will never not be myself for nobody." Is that some wisdom... or a threat? There's nothing like an awkward brunch with someone you don't like. Indie filmmaker Jim Cummings has unveiled his brand new short film called The Last Bunch online - it's available to watch now. The 11-minute short just premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this month, and he's launched it on the web without any delay after the fest. The short is about two couple getting brunch at a nice restaurant in Los Angeles, and their conversation gets more and more awkward as it goes on. Starring Bridge Stuart, Dustin Hahn, Taylor Misiak, Julia Bales, Hailey Rose, and Max Fillss. It's best to enjoy this film without knowing anything about where this conversation is going or what will be going down at this lovely brunch. This short quite similar to Julia Bales' short Followers, also about awkward moments. That line about "being thirsty" really does sum it up. // Continue Reading ›

Sarah Alexandra Marks in Bad Survival Thriller 'Escape' Official Trailer

Escape Trailer
Well Go USA is releasing this direct-to-video survival thriller titled Escape, which is not the most original or interesting title. It's already available on VOD now after premiering last year. After being taken from an island resort by a criminal gang, ten young women hatch an escape plan through the deset as they fight for survival against their ruthless kidnappers. They're caught off-guard when some of the women break free and fight back. his trash action thriller film stars Sarah Alexandra Marks, Sophie Rankin, Sean Cronin, Angela Dixon, Glenn Salvage, Jon-Paul Gates, Ksenia Islamova, Megan Lockhurst, and Tiffany Hannam-Daniels. "I really wanted the film to be a total blast and an epic journey... It's outlandish and larger than life. The action & violence are visceral and the landscapes striking. When the women fight back, they fight back hard," the director explains. This really looks as terrible as any movie can - avoid at all costs. // Continue Reading ›

My Parent, Neal Short Film
"I really wish I had done this sooner... As I get older, I'm a little more braver." This wholesome and honest short film features a heartfelt conversation turned into beautiful animation. My Parent, Neal is a 8-min short doc created by filmmaker Hannah Saidiner as a CalArts thesis project. It premiered in late 2021 / early 2022 and is available online now. Created for The New Yorker (here's the article), the film is about Hannah's conversation with her father - discussing his late-in-life transition to become who they really are. For most of his life, Neal, a man with a beard and tattoos now, was known as Nina, a schoolteacher and self-described 'mama' to two kids. Hannah explains: "Beginning on our shared birthday, my dad has always been a big and wonderful presence in my life - I'm so happy I get to share him, his story, and our relationship with the world through this film." I would like to see this doc with the real footage, but I like how intimate & personal it is, and all the animation also feels very personal as well. Trailer for Short Fan-Film 'The Spider' - A Horror Take on Spider-Man

The Spider Trailer
Watch out for this Spidey. There's a new fan film in the works launching soon titled The Spider, described as a "horror take on Spider-Man." Not to be confused with the other two actual spider horror films opening soon - Sting and Infested. Written and directed by Andy Chen, an up-and-coming young filmmaker who goes under the name "Locust Garden" on social media, the short film features a legit cast. Chandler Riggs (seen in "The Walking Dead" & "A Million Little Things") stars as Spider-Man, along with Caylee Cowan, Matthew Vorce, Kyra Gardner, Holgie Forrester, Carl Addicott, David Rice, Andrew Hernon, Kealani Kitaura, Ronan Arthur & Ben Thomas. With a score by Alexander Taylor. It is an entirely fan-made, non-profit film inspired by Spider-Man. Our pals over at Live for Film also point out that there is actually a "fully mutated Man-Spider" from the comics, and this short also seems similar to the Truth In Journalism Venom fan film from 2013. Some cool shots in this quick teaser - from the looks of it he's going to go full The Fly. Chen's hype: "Look out for this one!!! It's going to be the most insane one yet!!!" Funny Teaser Trailer for Chris Pine's 'Poolman' Wacky Stoner Comedy

Poolman Teaser Trailer
"Dear Moviegoer, thanks for watching my trailer." You're welcome, Mister Poolman. Vertical has unveiled a teaser trailer for the wacky stoner comedy titled Poolman, marking the directorial debut of actor Chris Pine. He shot this film in 2022 when the pandemic was still on, and now it's set for release starting in May in theaters around the country. It originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, but got terrible reviews (and even a few walk outs) from most critics. Poolman is described a stoner riff on the noir classic Chinatown. It's about a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny LA. When he uncovers the greatest water heist, he does what he can to protect his precious city. Chris Pine also stars as Darren Barrenman, the titular "poolman", with Annette Being, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, DeWanda Wise, Stephen Tobolowsky, Clancy Brown, John Ortiz, & Ray Wise. Official Trailer for 'Girls State' Doc Film - The Follow-Up to 'Boys State'

Girls State Doc Trailer
"Often when women start talking politics we get shut down." Apple TV has revealed the official trailer for the documentary film Girls State, the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2020 doc film Boys State by the same filmmakers - Amanda McBaine & Jesse Moss. This premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, just as Boys State did, and it will be streaming on Apple TV+ this April. "There's something in the air—it’s politics." What would American democracy look like in the hands of teenage girls? A political coming-of-age story and stirring reimagination of what it means to govern, Girls State follows young female leaders — from wildly different backgrounds across Missouri — as they navigate an immersive experiment to build a government from the ground up. Sundance also adds: "McBaine and Moss stay embedded in Girls State, following several charismatic candidates, but these aspiring change-makers keenly take note of the Boys State program, and the differences between the programs, sparking outcry and awakening." I caught this at Sundance - great film, even better than Boys State, with so much to offer with its vérité filmmaking. // Continue Reading ›

Softball Coach Comedy 'Sweet Dreams' Trailer with Johnny Knoxville

"You got 10 guys that need this place." Paramount has revealed an official trailer for a sports comedy called Sweet Dreams, a new film directed by the producer of sleeper hit The Peanut Butter Falcon previously. Opening in theaters in April this spring to enjoy. This fresh new comedy is a wild journey of second chances. Forced into rehab, Morris agrees to coach a misfit softball team of recovering addicts from his own house to prove that everyone, despite their past, can hit a home run. And maybe he will get his own life back on track, too. Johnny Knoxville stars as Morris, with an ensemble cast featuring Mo Amer, GaTa, Bobby Lee, Theo Von, Brian Van Holt, Jonnie Park, Shakewell, Adam Faison, plus Jay Mohr & Kate Upton. This doesn't look like it has the most original script, but it still does seem quite wholesome and amusing in an obnoxiously entertaining way. Jennifer Lopez in A.I. Sci-Fi Thriller 'Atlas' Official Trailer from Netflix

Atlas Trailer
"The future of humanity is in her hands." Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for a sci-fi movie called Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez – making it another star-driven expensive spectacle that will release this summer streaming on Netflix. Yet another artificial intelligence-related sci-fi movie, since it's the big tech trend of the moment, everyone has to make movies about it. Atlas is set in a bleak future, where an A.I. soldier has determined that the only way to end war is to end humanity. Lopez plays a data analyst with a deep distrust of A.I., who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot. When plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it. Along with Lopez, this stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, & Mark Strong. From the looks of it, this is almost a pro-A.I. propaganda piece disguised as a sci-fi movie. The Creator is a bit different, but this seems rather blatant in its message where she must learn to "trust it." Huh. This is a nice teaser, with some awesome VFX shots, but will the rest of it be any good? Only time will tell. Check out the teaser below. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Chilling Kafkaesque Horror 'In Flames' from Pakistan

In Flames Trailer
"No one will find out...?" Game Theory Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled In Flames, made by the Canadian-Pakistani filmmaker Zarrar Kahn. It was the first Pakistani film to premiere in Director's Fortnight at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in nearly half a century, and was submitted as Pakistan's entry to this year's Academy Awards. After the death of the family patriarch, a mother and daughter’s precarious existence is ripped apart by figures from their past.
