New Trailer for South African Supernatural Thriller 'The Soul Collector'

The Soul Collector Trailer

"There's something in the yard. Something strange…" Shout has debuted an official US trailer for a South African horror thriller titled The Soul Collector, which originally premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year. It also played at the Toronto After Dark, Chicago, & Pan African Film Festivals last fall. Produced and set in South Africa, The Soul Collector is a "fresh new tale of demonic terror, with a captivating South African cast." An old man, fated to collect souls for eternity, seeks atonement after trading his daughter's soul. The film stars Tshamano Sebe, Keita Luna, Garth Breytenbach, Inge Beckman, Chris April, and Owam Arwen Mditshwa. Naming a main character "Lazarus" is just a little too obvious, isn't it? But looks like he gives the best performance anyway. Seems like there's plenty of super creepy moments in this. ›››

Watch: Ben Strang's 'Beast' Short Set on an Island in Chesapeake Bay

Beast Short Film

"He's gone, okay?" This impressive short film won the Grand Jury Award at the SXSW Film Festival a few years ago, and is now available to watch online. Beast is a short film written and directed by Ben Strang, a Maryland-native filmmaker & photographer. Set on an island in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, "which once hosted a vibrant fishing industry but now is slowly fading away in isolation and decline." The story follows a young boy named Daniel, played by Elijah Mayo, who recruits the help of a fisherman to figure out what happened to his father after a mysterious disappearance. It's actually a teaser for a series, not just a simple short, and not a feature pitch either. Which is why it ends right when it's getting good (you need to tune in "next week" to find out more!). Also stars Chantal Nchako, Jay Potter, and Helen Hedman. A review from SXSW states that the short has, "hints of Jaws and… the haunting mysteries of 'Stranger Things,'" and a mystery that "immediately draws to mind prominent storytellers like Steven Spielberg." It's worth a watch. ›››

Watch: Training for the Gloucester Cheese Roll Short Film 'Let's Roll'

Let's Roll Short Film

"You wouldn't last five seconds on that hill. It takes balls to do it!" Let's get ready to rolllllll!! Let's Roll is the latest short film made by talented UK filmmaker Chris Thomas - he also directed the excellent short films Cropped and Land of Steel we've featured in the past. Chris says that in light of this year's "Gloucester Cheese Roll" being cancelled, they wanted to release the film online to celebrate the spirit of the cheese "in what's usually the build-up to Brockworth's finest hour." The film is a fictionalized dramedy based around the Gloucester cheese roll - an annual event where crazy people chase / roll / tumble after a round of cheese down a steep hill in England. All the real videos from this event are hilarious, but the short film is more of a coming-of-age comedy about how one girl will stop at nothing to compete. This reminds me of The Eagle Huntress, about a girl fighting tradition to do what she wants & compete in a local sport with men. Rock on. ›››

Trailer for Comedy '2 Minutes of Fame' with Jay Pharoah & Keke Palmer

"Maybe the time spent there chasing your dreams is better off spent here, chasing a paycheck." Lionsgate has released a trailer for a comedy titled 2 Minutes of Fame, formerly known as #TwoMinutesofFame (oh do I hate hashtag film titles and I'm glad they changed this one). The film is about a wannabe comedian who becomes internet famous after making impressions of another comedian. He heads to LA to try and achieve greater fame, but ends up in the cross-hairs of the veteran stand-up comic who "plots a rude—and hilarious—awakening for Deandre." Jay Pharaoh stars as Deandre, with Keke Palmer as his girlfriend, and a cast including Katt Williams, RonReaco Lee, Kimrie Lewis, and Valery M. Ortiz. The film stars Robert Carradine (the younger half-brother of David Carradine), Trista Robinson, Rachel Amanda Bryant, Jose Rosete, Jessica Cameron, Megan Le, and Heather Dorff. Watch: Stunning Microscopic Chemical Reaction Short Film 'As Above'

As Above Short Film

"As above, so below." How about something a bit different? This short film isn't really a documentary, nor is it a fictional short. It's "real world" short film that is utterly fascinating and entrancing to watch. As Above is made of one single shot filmed on the 8mm2 (0.3 square inch) surface of a chemical reaction. The point, as filmmaker Roman Hill explains, is to make us further ponder our understanding of this vast universe. "The environment in which we live, is at the constant mercy of the ever changing flow of planets, stars and galaxies… As well as the composition of the microscopic world. As Above is an invitation to contemplate the beauty of this perpetual movement of which we are part of… And perhaps invite the viewer to reflect on his position in the universe and the preciosity of life." Review: Hugh Jackman Rocks in Cory Finley's Superb 'Bad Education'

Bad Education Review

Is there ever any good in vanity? Not really. But we never seem to learn our lesson, doomed to fall prey to the merciless grip of vanity and fame and glory and success. And it always leads us down dark paths towards dead ends, no matter what. Bad Education, directed by Cory Finley, recalls the true story of one tragic downfall of vanity. The beloved superintendent of Long Island's Roslyn school district, Frank Tassone, and some of his staff, have been grossly misusing funds provided to the public school district. Bad Education is the story of how their schemes and sneakiness was uncovered – by one intrepid student working for the school newspaper. The fictionalized feature is as outstanding as everyone has been saying since it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. I'm glad to say that I loved this film, one of the best of the year so far. ›››

'Floyd Norman: An Animated Life' Documentary Film Trailer from TCM

Floyd Norman: An Animated Life Trailer

"He's like the Forrest Gump of animation." This isn't a brand new documentary, but it's still worth watching if you've never seen it. We originally featured the very first trailer for Floyd Norman: An Animated Life back in 2016, after the film premiered at a few film festivals. TCM (Turner Classic Movies) has been offering the documentary as part of their streaming / VOD selection this month (it expires today, unfortunately). The documentary film is about Disney legend Floyd Norman, the first African-American animator at Disney. Described as: "Animator. Storyman. Troublemaker." After working there for almost all of his life, he was told by Disney to retire, but has refused to do so and keeps on working with the mantra that he'll "die at the drawing board." Floyd has worked on Disney classics like Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book and even worked at Pixar on Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. We're posting this trailer again four years later, because why not - let's bring some extra attention to great films about great storytellers that shouldn't be forgotten. ›››

Watch: Award-Winning Horror Short Film 'Here There Be Monsters'

Here There Be Monsters Short Film

Time to let the monsters loose. Here There Be Monsters is a new horror short film made by Australian filmmaker Drew Macdonald. The film originally played at 50+ festivals around the world including Sitges, Hollyshorts, Screamfest and many more genre favs, and has won multiple awards along the way. To escape incessant bullying on the bus ride home, a young girl falls asleep, only to wake up trapped at an empty bus yard, with something fearsome lurking outside. Drew describes the short as "a throwback creature feature mixed with a contemporary story about bullying." The monster design in this is quite gnarly, which adds to the eeriness of the whole thing. Here There Be Monsters stars Savannah Foran McDaniel as Elki; plus Jordan Small, Brad McMurray, Toby Barron as the monster. Aside from the creature, it's impressive there's no dialogue in this short yet you can understand exactly what's going on and all the emotions. Enjoy. ›››

Mercenaries Stuck in a Never-Ending Stairwell in 'Black Ops' Trailer

Forced to climb or die, the group soon come face to face with their past sins in a desperate fight for survival. This stars Shayne Ward, Rachel Warren, Simon Meacock, Bentley Kalu, Samantha Schnitzler, and Toby Osmond. While it seems like a sci-fi concept, it leans way more into horror. Watch: Dogs Roam Wild in French Animated Short Film 'Peripheria'

Peripheria

Woof woof! If you put dogs (or a dog) in your short film, it's an absolute guarantee that I'll watch it. More dogs in cinema, the better! Peripheria is an animated short film (or rather it's an "illustrated" short film) made by French filmmaker David Coquard-Dassault. It originally premiered back in 2015, and won tons of awards including at the Annecy Film Festival and other fests. Now it's available online to watch for free - so you might as well give it a look. Peripheria is a much darker and contemplative short that seems to act as a metaphor for society and some of the problems plaguing our world. We follow various stray dogs as they run around various buildings. The filmmaker is "fascinated" by urban developments, and sets this film in a mesmerizing world of an abandoned housing project where the dogs roam wild. There isn't a clear narrative in this film, but it's still an impressive and thought-provoking experiment in visual storytelling. View below. ›››

65 Years in Secret - Trailer for Netflix's 'A Secret Love' Documentary

A Secret Love Doc Trailer

"She means everything." Love is love is love! Netflix has released an official trailer for a wonderful new documentary titled A Secret Love, telling the story of two lovers who have remained hidden for nearly 65 years. Two women – Pat Henschel and pro baseball player Terry Donahue – first fell in love in 1947. But they lived in secret for years. They ultimately decided to come out to family and friends in their eighties and live openly as the couple that they were. Time explains the full story behind these two women and how their romance became the topic for a film. Considering one of them is seen wearing A League of Their Own t-shirt, I can't help point out how this seems like the true story of one of those courageous baseball players. ›››

Final Trailer for Cory Finley's Excellent True Story Film 'Bad Education'

Bad Education Trailer

"You just put your foot on the gas, real hard, and you accelerate!" HBO has debuted a final 60-sec promo trailer for Cory Finley's film Bad Education, which is premiering on HBO starting this weekend. The film is a fictionalized version of the true story of the single largest public school embezzlement scandal in history - about schools on Long Island. You can read more about it in this NY Mag article that this film is based on. Hugh Jackman stars as Dr. Tassone, the superintendent caught up in an embezzling scheme run through his school district. Also starring Allison Janney, Ray Romano, Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathrine Narducci, and Alex Wolff. This played to rave reviews at TIFF, and it is definitely worth a watch. I had a chance to watch it and yes it's superb. Outstanding performances accent a crazy story about vanity & greed. ›››

Promo Trailer for Gerardo Naranjo's Oaxacan Coast Drama 'Kokoloko'

Kokoloko Trailer

"The odyssey of a Oaxacan girl…" The Match Factory has debuted the festival promo trailer for a Mexican drama titled Kokoloko, which is the latest feature from acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Gerardo Naranjo. He broke out big with his film Miss Bala (which was later remade by Hollywood) but he hasn't made a film since that premiered in 2011. Now he's back with Kokoloko! Set in a tropical seaside village on the Oaxacan coast, Marisol pursues personal freedom while navigating between the two men in her life - her lover, and her violent cousin who is keeping her captive. Starring Alejandra Herrera as Marisol, along with Noé Hernández and Eduardo Mendizábal. This has that old school, grainy 16mm style to it that makes it all the more dream-like. I am looking forward to seeing what Naranjo has created for us this time. Not only a story about toxic masculinity, but a story about a woman trying to break free from the men who control her. ›››

All Day and a Night Trailer

"What did you do, Jahkor?" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled All Day and a Night, the second feature film directed by Joe Robert Cole (Amber Lake), also known as one of the co-writers on the Black Panther script. His latest is about a young rapper from Oakland who struggles to deal with the repercussions of his actions. Ashton Sanders (from Moonlight) co-stars with Jeffrey Wright, and a cast including Regina Taylor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Isaiah John, Kelly Jenrette, & Shakira Ja'Nai Paye. This looks damn good! A brutally honest tale about family and the choices we make that set us apart. ›››

Watch: Old Men Fight in Amusing Animated 'Second to None' Short

Second to None Short Film

How far would you go to make sure you're always on top? This amusing short film titled Second to None explores the themes of ambition and dominance. Frederick Butterfield is determined to be the oldest man alive. The only thing standing in his way is his twin brother Herman, who is older by a mere minute. Their lifelong sibling rivalry culminates with a deadly competition. Get ready for a good laugh. Made by the Irish filmmaker Vincent Gallagher, this animated short is a fairly quick watch and entirely worth your time. The ending will leave you with a sly smirk. Starring Morgan C. Jones as the voice of Frederick Butterfield. Not only is the animation itself quite unique, especially the quirky old dudes character design, but the story itself is absurd and dark but still so much fun. It's obvious that trying to take out others only leads to self-harm, but mostly this is just an enjoyable animated story about two old dudes battling it out to be the oldest. ›››

First Trailer for 'Spaceship Earth' Doc About Biosphere 2 Experiment

Spaceship Earth Doc Trailer

"How can you prepare yourself for a journey into the unknown?" Neon has debuted an official trailer for Spaceship Earth, a documentary film about the crazy 1990s experiment known as the Biosphere 2. This originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and will be out on VOD next month for everyone to watch. This is timed with Earth Day 2020, as the film spins the disastrous story of the Biosphere 2 into a cautionary anti-corporate tale, as well as a story about good people trying to care about Earth and how to better live in harmony with Mother Nature. From Sundance: "Using archive material and present-day interviews with surviving 'Biospherians', director Matt Wolf brings us this spirited documentary that follows the gregarious and visionary countercultural collective over half of a century, as they conducted experiments around the globe leading up to Biosphere 2. If Spaceship Earth is a cautionary tale about the forces that threaten our planet, it is also an inspirational tribute to what a small creative group can achieve." ›››

Review: Martha Stephens' Film 'To the Stars' Set in 1960s Oklahoma

To the Stars

Living in a small town is hard for a teenager. It's even harder if you live in rural Oklahoma in the 1960s, and you feel different than all of your peers. Director Martha Stephens captures the atmosphere of this small town (and small-minded people) in her period drama To the Stars, which originally premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. While Stephen's production is not an innovative film that bends the standards of cinema, it's certainly an eye-opening coming-of-age story. The drama first premiered at Sundance in black & white, but it was later reverted back to color. I watched the latter version for release (on digital April 24th), and although it was unquestionably satisfying, I'd still love to experience this story in the original format. ›››

Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering's 'On the Record' #MeToo Doc Official Trailer

On the Record Trailer

"He just grabbed me… I was reduced to nothing in that moment…" HBO Max has unveiled an official trailer for the acclaimed documentary On the Record, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to quite a bit of buzz and positive reviews. Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering's new doc film On the Record presents the powerful and haunting story of music executive Drew Dixon as she grapples with her decision to become one of the first women of color, in the wake of #MeToo, to come forward and publicly name hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons of sexual assault. The documentary chronicles not only Dixon’s story but that of several other accusers – Sil Lai Abrams and Sheri Sher. The film was made entirely in secret, and the title was revealed only a week before the premiere at Sundance. I caught this at the fest and yes - it's an important and brave film that allows women to tell their story. "Every woman's story deserves to be heard." ›››

First Trailer for 'Shepherd: The Hero Dog' WWII Holocaust Dog Movie

Shepherd: The Hero Dog Trailer

"What would I do with you, Kaleb?" Signature Ent. has released the first official trailer for Shepherd: The Hero Dog, which will be out this summer on VOD. Dog lovers - pay attention! The film's official US title is Shepherd: The Story of a Jewish Dog, adapted from the novel "The Jewish Dog" from Asher Kravitz. When Kaleb, a beautiful German Shepherd, is taken away from his Jewish family he is captured by an SS Officer, and trained to help round up and terrorize Jewish prisoners at a Nazi concentration camp. But when Kaleb's former master, the young Joshua, arrives at the camp, the dog rediscovers his unwavering loyalty. Together the pair attempt to escape the camp and begin journey to freedom. Starring August Maturo as Joshua, along with Ayelet Zurer, Ken Duken, Lois Robbins, Levente Molnár, and Hans Peterson. This is such a remarkable story! Alas, this seems to be a mediocre trailer for a film that might be better than it looks at first glance. I hope it's an invigorating and moving film, because this story deserves that at least. ›››

Lauren Lapkus & David Spade in Trailer for Netflix's 'The Wrong Missy'

The Wrong Missy Trailer

"Missy is not who I thought she was… She's free, she's fun." Netflix has released the first official trailer for a comedy titled The Wrong Missy, the latest film from comedian / director Tyler Spindel. This is one of those ridiculous Hollywood-esque comedies with a concept that will either make you roll your eyes or laugh already. Tim has been texting a lady that might be the woman of his dreams. When things escalate fast, he invites her to a work retreat on Hawaii, realizing too late he mistakenly texted someone from a nightmare blind date - the "Wrong Missy". David Spade stars, with Lauren Lapkus as Missy, and a cast including Nick Swardson, Geoff Pierson, Jackie Sandler, Molly Simms, Sarah Chalke, Chris Witaske, and Rob Schneider. I thought they stopped making these absurd comedies! But there's always room for more. ›››

Official US Trailer for Submarine Thriller 'Torpedo U 235' from Belgium

Torpedo U 235 Trailer

"We've got to pilot this ourselves?" Epic Pictures has released an official US trailer for a submarine thriller called Torpedo U 235, which is an amalgamation of two other titles for this: Torpedo (the original Belgian title) and U235 (the sub's name). The film is about a small team of Belgian resistance fighters that kidnap a German submarine during WWII and accept a mission to bring uranium, needed for the Manhattan Project, from the Belgian Kongo to New York. Based on a true story, of course. This looks like it has some awesome action in addition to the wicked cool story of some Belgians wrangling a stolen German sub for a top secret mission. This stars Koen De Bouw, Thure Riefenstein, Ella-June Henrard, Joren Seldeslachts, Sven De Ridder, Stefan Perceval, and Bert Haelvoet. The dialogue is cheesy, but the rest seems solid. ›››

Watch: Extraordinary Space Mystery Sci-Fi Short Film 'The Beacon'

The Beacon Short Film

"I've never seen it on any of the charts." This short film is a must watch for sci-fi geeks! The Beacon is a stunning, exciting space travel short film made by filmmaker Chris Staehler, who also works in the VFX / previz industry in additional to directing. When Kara Verne goes missing on an interstellar shipping run, her husband Mark sets off to the far reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy in search of answers. This short is so damn good it belongs in Netflix's "Love Death & Robots". Starring Damien Kelly and Kylie Contreary, with Eric Snow and Claire Montgomery. Not only are the VFX fantastic, but the story itself is engaging and mysterious. As one YouTube commenter writes: "Why is a 25 minute film made by this company about 10X better than anything Hollywood puts out?… Because these are made based on genuine story writing and art." Indeed. This is an epic, fully-realized sci-fi universe created on a tiny budget. Impressive in every way. ›››

Seven Girls Start a Cult in 'The Color Rose' Trailer with Kaitlyn Bernard

The Color Rose Trailer

"All my friends are dying, and it's all my fault…" Rock Salt Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an indie cult drama titled The Color Rose, marking the directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Courtney Paige - who also co-stars in the film. Seven girls decide to start a cult where each of them must embody one of the seven deadly sins. They realize there's more to their religious town after they go missing one by one. Described as "a compelling and haunting tale with eerie twists", of course, which is exactly what the story sounds like anyway. This stars Kaitlyn Bernard, Loretta Walsh, Elysia Rotaru, Brenna Llewellyn, Brenna Coates, Keilani Elizabeth Rose, Jasmine Randhawa, Carly Fawcett, Aleks Paunovic, and Lochlyn Munro. This looks rather bland and derivative, without anything new or interesting going on. ›››

Trailer for NatGeo's Anti-Poaching Doc 'Akashinga: The Brave Ones'

Akashinga: The Brave Ones Trailer

"I will teach you to fight! I will teach you to disappear! I will teach you to use your power!" National Geographic has released an official trailer for a riveting short documentary called Akashinga: The Brave Ones, which is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and EarthXFilm Festival – both taking place online later this month. Executive produced by James Cameron and directed by Maria Wilhelm, Akashinga: The Brave Ones tells the story of the Akashinga, the all-female anti-poaching unit in Zimbabwe that is revolutionizing the way animals are protected and communities are empowered. Their focus is on education through community outreach, working with the locals first rather than resorting to full-on armed assault. National Geographic has been covering this group for the last few years - photographer Brent Stirton's series on the Akashinga won 2nd Place in Sony's World Photography Awards last year. The short only runs a total of 13 minutes but it looks like an invigorating and inspiring profile of a group of women fighting for change. ›››

One More Trailer for Disney's 'Artemis Fowl' Confirms Streaming Debut

Artemis Fowl Trailer

"Your mission – is to steal it." Disney has released one more official trailer for the long-awaited Artemis Fowl movie, an epic adaptation of the fantasy book series by Eoin Colfer. This trailer confirms that the movie will be available streaming on Disney+ on June 12th, skipping theaters entirely (due to the pandemic shutdown). The story follows a 12-year-old mastermind named Artemis Fowl, who discovers a world below ground of armed and dangerous--and extremely high-tech--fairies. He kidnaps one of them, Holly Short, and holds her for ransom in an effort to restore his family's fortune and find his father. Ferdia Shaw stars as Artemis, and the full cast includes Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Nonso Anozie, Tamara Smart, Miranda Raison, Joshua McGuire, and Hong Chau. This looks like it might be an entertaining adventure, probably best they're dropping it online right away. Family-time fun. ›››

An Imaginary Friend Terrorizes a Family in Trailer for 'Z' Horror Film

This originally premiered at the Overlook Film Festival last year, and is debuting to watch on Shudder this May. The film stars Keegan Connor Tracy, Jett Klyne, Sean Rogerson, Sara Canning, and Stephen McHattie. It doesn't particularly seem like anything we haven't seen before, but the creepy monster reveal is a bit jolting. Horror fans definitely don't want to miss this one. ›››
