Trailer for Comedy 'Relative' About a Dysfunctional Family in Chicago

Relative Trailer
"I don't want an empty nest!" Music Box Films has posted their official trailer for an indie drama about a family titled Relative, from filmmaker Michael Glover Smith. This originally premiered back in 2022, but we have only caught up with it now and haven't ever posted about this film before. It played at a few small film festivals in 2022/2023, with a very limited release in art house theaters around the country. As various members of the Frank family come together for a college graduation party in Chicago, they find their bonds being tested, and strengthened, in surprising ways. The story focuses on the parents of four kids, who decide to announce that they're about to sell the house they grew up in. "Relative is a warm blend of comedy and drama about a modern American family." This stars Wendy Robie, Francis Guinan, Cameron Scott Roberts, Clare Cooney, Keith D. Gallagher, Emily Lape, Melissa DuPrey, and Elizabeth Stam. The review quoted all over this marketing says that it's an "impeccably cast [and] superbly directed" film from Chicago. A handful of unknown actors might actually give great performances in an indie flick like this. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2024: A Story of Romance and Politics in 'Langue Étrangère'

Langue Étrangère Review
Another film about the young generations of today and their fervent involvement in politics. They're a dime a dozen nowadays. Does this one have anything unique or compelling to say? I'm always curious to find out, though way too many films these days often misunderstand what's going on out there and how politics are getting worse. They also often misunderstand why there are so many kids riled up to go protest, speak out about politics, and fight back as radical activists. I'm a bit worried that is the case with this new film, too... Langue Étrangère is a French-German co-production directed by the French filmmaker Claire Burger (following Party Girl and Real Love), premiering at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in the Main Competition. It's not a bad film, with some intriguing performances, though far from being a great film. It's also a lesbian romance about two young women who begin developing feelings for each other. One of the film's problems is it can't settle on which side of this story to focus on, instead mixing the two themes to a lackluster result. // Continue Reading ›

'Johatsu - Into Thin Air' Doc Trailer on Japan's Disappearing People

Johatsu - Into Thin Air Doc Trailer
"In this neighborhood, nobody cares if your name is real or fake." There's an interesting new documentary film premiering at festivals soon titled Johatsu - Into Thin Air, which is co-directed by the German doc filmmaker Andreas Hartmann + Japanese doc filmmaker Arata Mori. It's premiering soon at both the 2024 Thessaloniki Documentary Festival first then right after at the CPH:DOX Festival in Copenhagen in March. No other release dates or details are available - as it's just being unveiled now. In Japan 🇯🇵, thousands of people disappear voluntarily every year. And there are companies ready to help those who want to disappear without a trace and start a new life somewhere else anonymously. Meet some of them in a film that soberly examines a modern phenomenon. Known as the Johatsu – 'evaporated' – they abandon their lives to start anew, sometimes with professional assistance and leaving others behind. The doc film also introduces to the "night movers" who help people quietly move. This looks way more appealing than I expected, featuring interviews with a few of the people who have "disappeared". The film first premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival last year, with a stop at the Heartland Film Festival. 2024 Indie Spirit Awards
The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring all of the indie films which deserve honor and recognition - celebrating their 39th year. The 2024 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Saturday evening, in their usual spot in Santa Monica near the beach - this time just a week before the Oscars. The big winner this year is the beloved Past Lives, taking both Best Film and Best Director (Celine Song also won a DGA Award for Best First Feature). The other nominations from all the 2023 releases included many outstanding indie films many cinephiles have been talking up all year, deserving of some extra time in the spotlight - gems like May December, American Fiction, Passages, Earth Mama, All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, BlackBerry, and The Starling Girl. As usual, there are a few surprises: I've never heard of Chronicles of a Wandering Saint (an Argentinian film titled Crónicas de una Santa Errante in Spanish) or Upon Entry before their nominations; We Grown Now (watch the trailer) and Mountains haven't been released yet. Roku's 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' Magical Creatures Series Teaser

The Spiderwick Chronicles Trailer
"What kind of creature's lurking inside Spiderwick?" The Roku Channel is premiering their own adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles series coming up in April this spring. Roku has revealed a teaser for the series adapted for TV by the writer Aron Eli Coleite (creator of "Daybreak", "Locke & Key"). The Spiderwick Chronicles book series was already adapted into a movie once before, directed by Mark Waters in 2008 with Freddie Highmore starring, and even a video game. The story follows the Grace Family, as they move into their ancestral home and unravel a dark mystery about their great-great Uncle who discovered the parallel, secret faerie world to their own. Their son Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real! Off into the parallel universe he goes... The Roku series stars Lyon Daniels as Jared, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant, Mychala Lee, Jack Dylan Grazer, Christian Slater as Mulgarath, Momona Tamada, & Alyvia Alyn Lind. This certainly looks cheesy but at least it stars Christian Slater as an ominous bad guy. // Continue Reading ›

Amusing 'Dune' Themed 'Sand & Spice' Trailer for 'Kung Fu Panda 4'

Kung Fu Panda 4 Dune Trailer
"Just the right amount of spice." Universal + DreamWorks have debuted an amusing TV spot for Kung Fu Panda 4 riffing on the release of the epic sequel Dune: Part Two in theaters this week. KFP4 opens in theaters nationwide next week, starting on March 8th, the week after this one. This spring, for the first time in almost a decade, comedy icon Jack Black returns to his role as Po the Panda, the world's most unlikely kung fu master, for a hilarious, butt-kicking brand new chapter in DreamWorks Animation's beloved action-comedy franchise: Kung Fu Panda 4 (watch the main trailer here). Po is gearing up to become the spiritual leader of his Valley of Peace, but also needs someone to take his place as Dragon Warrior. As such, he will train a new kung fu practitioner for the spot and will encounter a villain called the Chameleon who conjures villains from the past. This sequel also stars Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master, Shifu; James Hong as Mr. Ping; Bryan Cranston as Li; and Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Shifu's former student & arch-nemesis. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan joins the cast as a new character, Han. I always enjoy when studios crossover their marketing like this. Full Trailer for Costner's Epic Two-Parter 'Horizon: An American Saga'

Horizon: An American Saga Trailer
A two-part theatrical event. Warner Bros has revealed the full official trailer for Horizon: An American Saga, directed by, produced by, and starring Kevin Costner. This epic western will be released as two parts during the summer of 2024 - at the end of June and in August. He filmed throughout both 2022 and 2023 in southern Utah to get both parts of this story finished and ready for the big screen. The westerns chronicle a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. The massive ensemble cast for Horizon: An American Saga includes tons of major actors: Kevin Costner stars with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Michael Rooker, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Will Patton, Thomas Haden Church, Dale Dickey, and Jamie Campbell Bower, among others. After the success of "Yellowstone", I think Hollywood is hoping this will end up as one of the most successful westerns of the modern era. Can he pull it off? How does that look? Cute Trailer for Adorable French Film 'A Cat's Life' About Growing Up

A Cat's Life Trailer
"Lou, I wish I could grow as fast as you..." Capelight Pictures & Blue Fox Ent. have revealed an official US trailer for a nice animal movie titled A Cat's Life, a French "warm-hearted and educational family film." Obviously it's about a cat; the film is adapted from a French novel named "Rroû" about a kitty named Rroû. The film follows the journey of Clémence and her kitty, Rroû, as they leave Paris to spend the holidays in the countryside. While there, Rroû enjoys the wildlife and befriends Câline, a white kitten who prowls in the woods. With a great feel for the moment and breathtaking shots of nature and animals, it captures the friendship between a girl and a cat who both have to learn what it means to grow up. The US version of this renames the cat to "Lou" though the cat still goes out for a thrilling adventure into the woods. A Cat's Life stars Capucine Sainson-Fabresse as Clémence, with Corinne Masiero and Lucie Laurent. For the US release, it has been dubbed in English because it's mainly meant for kids and "the whole family" to enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2024: Iranian Romance Film 'My Favourite Cake' is a Delight

My Favourite Cake Review
When it comes to romance, everyone knows that you shouldn't wait too long... Don't let all of life go by, and have the courage to say hi to someone before it's too late. That's the wisdom explored in this delightful new film from Iran titled My Favourite Cake (labeled as Keyke mahboobe man in the Berlinale line-up). The film is both written & directed by the Iranian filmmakers Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha, and premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in the Main Competition section (though it didn't win any awards). Unfortunately the two filmmakers are being kept in Iran, as the government took their passports and imposed a travel ban. Nonetheless, this film stands out within the Berlinale line-up as an entertaining-for-everyone heartfelt story of romance. The best compliment I can give is that it has the vibe of an Iranian Before Sunrise telling a charming story about two 70-year-old single, lonely pensioners who randomly meet and have the most wonderful night together. They're so cute together, you'll never forget Mahin & Faramarz. // Continue Reading ›

Amusing First Look Teaser for 'Ghost Cat Anzu' Japanese Anime Film

Ghost Cat Anzu Teaser Trailer
"A once-in-a-lifetime summer." GKids has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a Japanese animated film titled Ghost Cat Anzu, arriving to watch later in 2024. This originally premiered at the 2023 Annecy Film Festival last year as a work-in-progress project. It's now finished and ready to debut in Japan this summer. It's a rotoscoped 2D animation film that's co-directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita, who often makes live-action films. The Japanese cinema master Nobuhiro Yamashita x rising star of anime world Yôko Kuno x world-renowned artist Mirai Moriyama create a "monster cat"! The anime is about an amusing friendship shared between Karin, a strong-minded girl sent to live with her monk granddad in the Japanese countryside, and Anzu, the even-more unpredictable phantom feline who acts as her guardian. Mirai Moriyama voices the titular Anzu, and Noa Gotō voices Karin. Both played their characters live-action that became the reference for the animators, with both their dialogue and their movements being converted into the final footage. This sounds like so much fun! Just a short teaser to start without much footage - but I'm curious enough already. // Continue Reading ›

A French documentary also won the Golden Bear last year, too. Is this the hot trend now? The festival also awarded Sebastian Stan for Best Performance; along with Martin Gschlacht for Best Cinematography in the film The Devil’s Bath (Des Teufels Bad) - the latest from the Austrian co-directors of Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge previously. Berlinale 2024: Jérémy Clapin's Sci-Fi Grief Tale 'Meanwhile on Earth'

Meanwhile on Earth Review
One of my favorite films from 2019 is an animated French feature called I Lost My Body, about hand that runs off from a lab and a guy who encounters it. I was delighted to discover that the filmmaker behind I Lost My Body, named Jérémy Clapin, already has a new science fiction film finished and ready. His latest film is titled Meanwhile on Earth, also known as Pendant ce temps sur Terre in French, and it premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section. I'm glad I caught up with it, even though I didn't even know it was playing at Berlinale until halfway through when other colleagues started talking about it. Meanwhile on Earth is a mesmerizing little sci-fi film about a woman connecting with extraterrestrial life. Not a knockout, nothing to phone home about, but vibrant filmmaking that kept me intrigued. It may not end up as impactful as I Lost My Body, but Jérémy Clapin will keep getting better the more films he makes. // Continue Reading ›

A Fox & His Austrian Friend - Official Trailer for 'The Fox' WWII Movie

The Fox Trailer
"I won't let anything happen to you. I promise." Greenwich Ent. has posted the US trailer for The Fox, also known as Der Fuchs in German, an Austrian WWII film telling a true story. At the dawn of World War II in Austria, a young soldier encounters a wounded fox cub and takes it with him to occupied France. He clings to it as the last vestige of his humanity amidst the carnage of war. The story of an unlikely friendship. Based on the true story of Franz Streitberger, director Adrian Goiginger's great-grandfather. This premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival back in 2022, and is only now getting a VOD release in the US to watch. The Fox stars Simon Morzé as Franz Streitberger, with Adriane Gradziel, Marko Kerezovic, Karl Markovics, Alexander Beyer, and Karola Niederhuber. Thankfully this doesn't look as cheesy as so many other WWII films recently, it really does look like a moving tale of friendship amidst chaos. And the fox seems real! Somehow! They shot with real foxes on set!? Better than using a bad CGI fox in every scene. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2024: 'La Cocina' is a Chaotic Film About Kitchen Assholes

La Cocina Review
Everyone knows that most big restaurant kitchens are a mess. Everyone also knows that restaurant workers are overworked, underpaid, usually some of the most stressed out people on the planet, who work tirelessly where we can't see them to prepare our food and keep the restaurant running at full speed. There have been a number of good films made about kitchens and restaurant workers recently (Boiling Point and "The Bear" are two of the most prominent) and now there's another new one to add to that growing subgenre. La Cocina is the latest feature film made by a Mexican filmmaker named Alonso Ruizpalacios, who directs this B&W drama based on the acclaimed stage play by Arnold Wesker. Alas, La Cocina is unfortunately a messy, tiresomely chaotic, frustrating film that is so obsessed with its own chaos that it becomes annoying to sit through, especially the final 30 minutes. Check, please! I don't want a desert today, I'm ready to leave. // Continue Reading ›

Full US Trailer for 'Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World'

Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World Trailer
"Wild, hilarious, and cryptically profound." Buckle up! Mubi has revealed their full trailer for the acclaimed Romanian indie film titled Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, the latest creation by filmmaker Radu Jude (who won Berlinale's Golden Bear prize in 2021 for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn). This premiered at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival last year and many critics went berserk for it, heralding it as one of the best films at any festival last year. However, most people are not going to be into this one - it's nearly 3 hours long, mostly in B&W, following a woman driving around as she makes her own TikToks and cracks semi-offensive jokes all the time (here's my full review). An overworked and underpaid production assistant has to shoot a workplace safety video commissioned by a multinational company. But an interviewee makes a statement and must then re-invent his story to fit the company's narrative. Featuring new interviews with prominent politicians, journalists, and the people who lived through history, this series is an exploration of the decades-long conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union framed by current events that reveal the Cold War continues and the world remains on the precipice of nuclear war. Berlinale 2024: 'Spaceman' is Giant Space Spider Therapist: The Film

Spaceman Review
One of the strangest films paying at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival is a Netflix sci-fi offering from a Swedish filmmaker named Johan Renck. It's a strange pick not because the film is experimental or unconventional, it's strange because it doesn't make sense this film is playing at a festival. Spaceman will streaming be on Netflix in a few more weeks (starting March 1st). It's another mostly middle-of-the-road, easily-forgettable Netflix Original, and it doesn't really do anything crazy or exciting or clever that would make it worthy of a major festival premiere. It's also just a really strange film because it's about a giant, benevolent space spider (!!) that appears inside a spaceship that is traveling near Jupiter – astronaut Jakub is on a year-long solo mission to investigate a purple cloud of mysterious space dust that appeared near Jupiter a few years before. It's actually based on a true story, sort of, about the the country's first astronaut, Jakub Procházka, raised in the Czech countryside. But this intriguing backstory has nothing to do with what is happening in this movie. // Continue Reading ›

"I know what you're thinking... is it worth it? It's the job..." Vertical has revealed the official trailer for an intense thriller set on the streets of New York City titled Asphalt City, made by French filmmaker Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, of the film A Prayer Before Dawn previously. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year under the title Black Flies, but got pretty dismal reviews from most critics. A young paramedic is paired with a seasoned partner on the night shift in NYC revealing a city in crisis. Discovering the chaos firsthand, he is tested with the ethical ambiguity that can often mean the difference between life & death. Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan co-star, along with Gbenga Akkinagbe, Raquel Nave, Kali Reis, with Michael C. Pitt, Katherine Waterston, and Mike Tyson (yes, seriously) as their captain. It's an intense and horrifying look at just how unsettling it is to work as an EMT / paramedic in NYC, tons of stress and gruesome encounters. I wish this was a better film, because it's really hard to watch it or recommend it. // Continue Reading ›

'Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About A Kid Named Laroi' Doc Trailer

Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About A Kid Named Laroi Doc Trailer
"Laroi, he's so ambitious, I could tell he was gonna be huge." Prime Video has revealed an official trailer for another new music documentary called Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About A Kid Named Laroi, from OBB Media. As the title pretty clearly indicates, the film is about a young Australian rapped known as The Kid Laroi - who was originally named Charlton Howard before his moniker. He gained recognition from his association with American rapper Juice WRLD while he was on tour in Australia. He gained a local following before signing a joint venture record deal with both Lil Bibby's Grade A Productions and Columbia Records. The film is about his "growing up" over the last few years with all of his success. A moment in time for musician The Kid Laroi as he enters adulthood, navigating fame, mental health struggles, first love, and the death of his mentor Juice WRLD (who passed away in 2019 of a drug overdose). This film looks like yet another marketing doc for the music industry, as The Kid Laroi is only 20 years old right now. Check it out. // Continue Reading ›

Lindsay Lohan in Netflix's Romantic Comedy Movie 'Irish Wish' Trailer

Irish Wish Trailer
"I am not the one who is getting married! She is!" Netflix has unveiled a fun trailer for a romantic comedy called Irish Wish, the next Lindsay Lohan romcom from the streaming studio after Falling for Christmas in 2022. When the love of Maddie's life gets engaged to her best friend, she puts her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland. Actor Ed Speleers explains: "This world, this sphere of filmmaking comes very naturally for [Lindsay Lohan]. She has a great approach to the work and is very much in tune with her comedic bones. This was my first out and out rom-com, and to team up with Lindsay and film in the stunning Republic of Ireland felt like the perfect way to venture into this genre." Lindsay Lohan stars with Ed Speleers, Alexander Vlahos, Ayesha Curry, Elizabeth Tan, Jacinta Mulcahy, and Jane Seymour. Once again, it looks like some Hallmark Channel rubbish, but hey some folks really enjoy these. // Continue Reading ›

Official UK Trailer for Aboriginal Orphan Religious Film 'The New Boy'

The New Boy Trailer
"After a shaky start, he is learning to read and write. He has a passion for Christ." Yes he does. Signature Entertainment in the UK has revealed a new official UK trailer for The New Boy, the latest feature made by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton. This initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, though without much buzz. It opened in Australia last year and we posted the first official trailer back then. The New Boy depicts the mesmeric story of a nine-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun. The boy's presence disturbs the delicately balanced world in this story of spiritual struggle and the cost of survival. Cate Blanchett stars as Sister Eileen, Aswan Reid as the boy, plus Deborah Mailman and Wayne Blair. The reviews in Cannes for this were mixed, some good, some bad, saying it's "ultimately unmoving" and "turgid." Nonetheless, it still feature some stunning cinematography, so there's that much making it worthwhile at least. Take a look. // Continue Reading ›

Free Time Trailer
"I think this is good for me... I think I'm gonna go out and live life. Live life to the fullest..." Cartilage Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Free Time, marking the feature directorial debut of indie filmmaker Ryan Martin Brown. This first premiered at the 2023 Indy Film Fest last year, with stops at the Boston, Montclair, and Nashville Film Festivals as well. Led by Colin Burgess and featuring a wide ensemble of New York's funniest performers, Ryan's debut feature is an uproarious comedy — filmed on location in the midst of America's "Great Resignation" — about the search for meaning in the modern world. Approaching the end of his twenties and his relative youth, a man decides to quit his cushy desk job and "embrace life" - only to realize he has no idea what to do with this newfound freedom. Wedding-Gone-Wrong Shark Movie 'Something in the Water' Trailer

Something in the Water Trailer
"Someone needs to swim for help." Studiocanal has revealed an official UK trailer for a shark horror movie titled Something in the Water, made by a VFX artist turned filmmaker named Hayley Easton Street. It's set for release in the UK in July this summer, though no US date confirmed yet. This all-female production is written by, directed by, produced by, and stars nothing but women. Awesome! "This summer, fear will find new depths." The survival thriller follows a group of five girlfriends who must fight for their lives in open water after a dream wedding transformed into a nightmare. Starring Hiftu Quasem, Lauren Lyle, Natalie Mitson, Nicole Rieko Setsuko, and Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart, as a group of friends on a holiday gone very wrong. It's always the same story in these shark movies, something goes wrong while out on the water. But this still looks pretty good! Promo Trailer for Android Therapy Thriller 'Raptus' with Ksenia Solo

Raptus Trailer
"I don't want to try to control the trauma, okay, I want to kill it." Raven Banner has revealed a very early promo trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Raptus, the latest from filmmaker Bennet De Brabandere. This project doesn't have a release set because it's still being shopped by Raven Banner at the European Film Market this month, and this promo trailer will hopefully give it some extra attention. In the wake of a savage attack, Sarah Mathis orders a new form of android therapy called Raptus, and reveals a path to recovery with twisted surprises. It's about a "therapy" android robot that gets pushed too far in her recovery and their relationship starts to spiral out of control. This footage gives a few major teases as to where she'll go with it (him?). Raptus stars Ksenia Solo as Sarah, and Nolan Gerard Funk as the android, with Zion Forrest Lee, Christina Cox, & Kerry Ann James. It does look a bit TV quality but it still seems fairly enjoyable. // Continue Reading ›

"Good job, Alan! Now come on, enough mucking about, back to work." It's go time for an amusing sci-fi misadventure with Alan! And his co-workers. There's a fun sci-fi stop-motion animation available to watch online now titled Alan The Infinite. The film is made by an animation writing & directing duo based at Aardman Animation named Michael Please & Daniel Ojari - together they run Parabella Animation Studio, and also made the film Robin Robin previously for Aardman. "Rescued from what the filmmakers describe as 'internet cold storage,'" Alan The Infinite is out now - after first debuting as a proof-of-concept project in 2019. On his first day on the job (at a boring lamination company), Alan mistakenly unleashes a cosmic, supernatural forces in the office. Unfortunately he realizes that fitting in at Lamin’8 is going to be infinitely trickier than he ever could have dreamed. Featuring the voice of Daniel Ojari as Alan. Blackout Trailer
"Everyone needs to go home - there's something out there on the loose and dangerous." Dark Sky Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Blackout, the latest genre creation from horror regular actor / filmmaker Larry Fessenden. This premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, with additional festival appearances at Sitges, Woodstock, and the Brooklyn Horror Festival. Official Trailer for 'Shirley' - Starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Trailer
"Fearless. Fierce. First." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for their upoming biopic film titled Shirley, from filmmaker John Ridley following his NOLA hospital thriller series Five Days at Memorial just before this. The film is now set for streaming in March on Netflix, and based on early test screening reviews, it's not going to make much of an impact (which is why it didn't open in last year's awards season). Shirley tells the story of the first Black congresswoman in America's history and a political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for President of the United States years ago. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign. The film stars Regina King in the lead role as Shirley Chisholm, with Lance Reddick (RIP), Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Cherrie, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, and André Holland. This looks like a by-the-numbers biopic in every way. Yet still empowering: "I just want to remind people what's possible." // Continue Reading ›

Action Thriller '5lbs of Pressure' Trailer with Luke Evans & Rory Culkin

5lbs of Pressure Traler
"Five pounds of trigger pressure – so your aim, never off." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for the film 5lbs of Pressure, an action thriller by filmmaker Phil Allocco. Filmed mostly in the UK even though this is an American production. Yet another generic crime thriller with the same characters and plot we've seen often recently. Trying to start over, Adam searches for redemption returning to his old neighborhood to put to rest his demons, though he comes under new pressure when the brother of the man he killed seeks revenge on him. Meanwhile, Mike, is trying to escape a life of crime living under the thumb of his gangster Uncle Leff. The movie stars Luke Evans as Adam, Rory Culkin as Mike, Zac Adams, Rudy Pankow, Stephanie Leonidas, Savannah Steyn, Lorraine Burroughs, and Alex Pettyfer as Leff. Official Trailer for Doc Trilogy 'God Save Texas' feat. Richard Linklater

God Save Texas Doc Trailer
"It's hard to be a Texan right now." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a fascinating new docu series titled God Save Texas, a three part look into the lives of Texans living in three different cities. This brand new HBO Original Documentary Trilogy is inspired by Lawrence Wright's book that's also called "God Save Texas", and follows three filmmakers' distinct perspectives on their own Texas hometowns. The three Texan filmmakers who direct the films in this series are Richard Linklater, Alex Stapleton, and Iliana Sosa – a personal and panoramic journey through one of the most controversial states in the union. Returning to their hometowns to shed light on an underrepresented story, the filmmakers chronicle the complex history of each city, exploring how it intertwines with their own provenance and evolution, and placing it in the larger picture of America today. Linklater's film God Save Texas: Hometown Prison is set in Huntsville. Stapleton's film God Save Texas: The Price of Oil is set in Houston. And Sosa's film God Save Texas: La Frontera is set in El Paso. All of these will premiere together at the end of February for streaming on Max. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2024: Lena Dunham Goes on a Trip to Poland in 'Treasure'

Teasure Review Berlinale
There's yet another interesting set of twin films in 2024 - two films that are remarkably similar in so many ways even though they're entirely independent, unrelated productions. The first film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January titled A Real Pain, written, directed by, and starring Jesse Eisenberg, and it won the Screenwriting Award at that festival (here's my full review). The second film is premiering now at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in February titled Treasure, directed by German filmmaker Julia von Heinz, and starring actors Stephen Fry & Lena Dunham as father & daughter. Both films involve Americans traveling to Poland, flying into Warsaw, from where they embark upon a "heritage" road trip tour around Poland to find an old home where someone they know once lived in many years ago before fleeing Poland. Both also feature annoying characters, jokes about tourists visiting Poland, and trips to a Jewish graveyard as well as a Nazi concentration camp. They're both so similar it's hard to not talk about both, even though this review is supposed to be about Treasure, I must compare them as stories about similar themes. // Continue Reading ›

Directed by Jason Bergh, The Greatest Love Story Never Told follows Jennifer Lopez as she attempts her most daring project yet: independently producing a new album and cinematic original that explore her twenty-year journey to self-love. It is a unique behind-the-scenes experience with Lopez and her many collaborators as she produces a new album & movie. Berlinale 2024: Tilman Singer's 'Cuckoo' is More Horror Excellence

Cuckoo Review
It's only February and two of the best horror films of 2024 have already premiered. The first is the Sundance Midnight horror hit It's What's Inside (my review) which many other critics listed as one of the best films from the Sundance Film Festival. The second is the German horror film Cuckoo, which just premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival. This one honestly should've been playing in the usually impressive Sundance Midnight line-up as well, but as a German production from a German filmmaker, it's obvious why the film ended up premiering at Berlinale instead. Cuckoo is another super fresh, wholly original, entirely engaging, suspenseful, highly entertaining, decidedly campy horror creation that is likely to go on to become an iconic film in the horror genre. The confident filmmaking choices, the villain(s), the lead character, the mountain resort setting, all of it is so unique & exciting in this excellent genre creation from filmmaker Tilman Singer. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus' Final Performance Doc

Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus Trailer
Janus Films has revealed an official trailer for the wonderful documentary performance film titled Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus. This is the final performance of the master Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in early 2023 at the age of 71. The film premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year as a special screening. A celebration of an artist's life in the purest sense, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus is the definitive swan song of one of the world’s greatest musicians. In late 2022, as a parting gift, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave us with one final performance: a concert film featuring just him and his piano. Curated and sequenced by Sakamoto himself, the twenty pieces featured in the doc film wordlessly narrate his life through his wide-ranging oeuvre. The selection spans his entire career – from his pop-star period with Yellow Magic Orchestra and his magnificent scores for filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to his meditative final album, 12. I had the chance to watch this in Venice and it's a really awe-inspiring film to sit through, just to be awash in the majesty of Sakamoto's music and melodies. It is a truly special experience. // Continue Reading ›

Insanely Scary Trailer for Giant Spider Horror Film 'Sting' - Oh Hell No!

Sting Trailer
"What kind of spider are we talking about here?" "A big one." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an insanely scary, unsettling horror movie called Sting, arriving in theaters this April. This Australian production comes from a filmmaker named Kiah Roache-Turner, and it looks as scary as any spider movie can. Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte’s pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival. The freaky little creature actually comes from outer space, an alien spider that befriends this little girl before it becomes an enormous killer. This stars Alyla Browne, Ryan Corr, Penelope Mitchell, Jermaine Fowler, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, Noni Hazlehurst, and Robyn Nevin. This isn't the only extremely scary spider movie this year - there's also a French horror called Vermin that apparently used real spiders while shooting. Official Trailer for Spiritual Horror Thriller Film 'The Woods Are Real'

The Woods Are Real Trailer
"Bravery is real. Out here, bad people become good." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Woods Are Real, made by filmmaker Alix Lambert. This seems to be a shoddy "liberals are dumb!" film made by American conservatives, which is not surprising to see nowadays but it also doesn't have much of anything interesting to say either... The film is described as a "folk horror twist" on the story of Job from the Bible. Joba and Quincy are a wealthy Brooklyn couple who value charity above all. But when a friend returns from a country pilgrimage to challenge their bleeding hearts, they accept an invitation that will change their lives forever. They end up trapped in the woods with everything taken from them... Starring Matt Dellapina and Chinasa Ogbuagu as Joba and Quincy, with Campbell Scott as The Woodsman, Nick Westrate, Jeffrey Omura, Kathleen McElfresh, Teresa Avia Lim, & Laura Esposito. This looks so obnoxiously cheesy and pretentious, I doubt anyone will even care to see it. // Continue Reading ›

Second Trailer for Excellent 'Femme' Film Featuring George MacKay

Femme Trailer #2
"I'm a private person." "Are you now?" Utopia has unveiled a second trailer for the edgy new film Femme, which first premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival (here's my review) last year. One year later - they're giving this another push before it hits US theaters. It's a remarkably powerful look at the dynamic between a gay man & closeted "tough guy" in London. Jules' life as a drag queen is destroyed by a homophobic attack. But when he re-encounters his attacker, the deeply-closeted Preston in a sauna, he is now presented with a chance to exact revenge. Unrecognizable out of his wig and make-up, Jules infiltrates Preston’s life, and in doing so, discovers power in a different kind of drag. A provocative contemporary thriller. Starring George MacKay as Preston & Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules, with a cast including Aaron Heffernan, John McCrea, Nima Taleghani, Antonia Clarke, and Moe Bar-El. I am a big fan of this film and raved in my review that it's "an edgy, compelling cinematic story." Arriving in cinemas this March - keep an eye out. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer for Dementia Film 'Knox Goes Away' Directed by Michael Keaton

Knox Goes Away Trailer
"There's no coming back from this one..." Saban Films has revealed the trailer for Knox Goes Away, a film directed by and starring Michael Keaton. This originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year to mixed reviews - some good & some bad. Set for a limited release in theaters only this March. Yet another hit man film to join the many out there right now. When a contract killer learns he has a rapidly evolving form of dementia, he is offered an opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged son caught in a bind. Keaton stars as John Knox, the aging hit man, along with James Marsden as his son, Suzy Nakamura, John Hoogenakker, Joanna Kulig, Ray Mckinnon, Lela Loren with Marcia Gay Harden and Al Pacino. This doesn't look that good - a bit muddled and so poorly shot - but all these nice quotes from this trailer do make me curious to find out why it is so "entrancing" and "twisted."
