Is either title good? This hasn't played at any film festivals, but it was picked up during an AFM sale a few years ago. Stranded in the open sea after a fatal jet ski accident, a young woman and her two friends are rescued by a fishing vessel's captain, unaware that the ship harbors a chilling secret. From this trailer, it looks like it's an organ harvesting vessel - this seems to be like Eli Roth's Hostel but on a boat. Dead Sea stars Isabel Gravitt, Genneya Walton, Alexander Wraith, with Dean Cameron, Garrett Wareing, Al Burke, Brian Silverman, and Koa Tom. Set for the typical VOD right away release later in July this summer. This recently premiered at the 2024 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival a few weeks ago. The film, which is executive produced by Common, explores the failures of the criminal justice system through a different POV, and is a riveting social justice thriller highlighting the perils of marijuana incarceration. The story follows a single Latina mother, starring Mía Maestro, whose illegal marijuana business is put at risk when her young son Leo, portrayed by Ravi Cabot-Conyers (from Encanto), befriends their new neighbors who move in downstairs—a white boy played by Sean Convery and his police officer grandfather. You have to get a look at this! The independent animated film just premiered at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival last month (here's my review). Little dino Diplodocus ends up on a magical adventure to save his parents who have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Alongside a wizard and two quirky scientists, he encounters fantastical creatures and amazing places along the way. It's not at all anything like Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, it's a different multiverse-hopping, meta, wacky adventure. The comic book artist segment is live-action, and he is told to erase these characters to create something more "cute" like a kitty, and in the animated world, everything begins to literally be erased. Annecy Review: 'Diplodocus' is a Peculiar Meta Story About Creativity

Yet another animation creation unlike anything ever seen before. The Polish animated film Diplodocus is finally finished & ready to wow everyone. It just premiered at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival in the out-of-competition Annecy Presents section. Director Wojtek Wawszczyk has been working on this project for years, and was able to finish it with financing help from the Polish Film Institute. At first glance, Diplodocus seems like another generic animated film about a super cute little green dinosaur known as Diplo, or Dip, short for "Diplodocus" (of course). I've already seen some critics comparing it to Pixar's The Good Dinosaur (2015), though only because the characters look the same. It also reminds me of the 1988 classic The Land Before Time, also about talking dinosaurs. But in reality, it's nothing like either of these films. Diplodocus is exceptionally ambitious. It's a half live-action, half-animated tale of a precocious, adventurous dinosaur and his strange friends hopping through different universes trying to get their creator to not erase them and turn them into cute, easy-to-sell characters. Barletta Productions has unveiled a promo trailer for an indie stop-motion animation film titled Living Large, a Czech production directed by Kristina Dufková. This just premiered at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival earlier this month, and it will next screen at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia, kicking off at the end of June. 12-year-old Ben has just hit puberty and suddenly his weight's a problem – for him and for everyone else. The other kids bully him, his divorced parents don't know what to do. Even the school nurse is worried about him. So, despite his love of food and his emerging talent as a chef, Ben decides to take drastic action. He goes on a diet, attempting to win over the girl of his dreams. Will it work? The voices are in English though there's no voice cast available yet. The main kid Ben sounds a lot like Michael Cera. I've never seen an animated film like this tell the story of an overweight kid, which is why this one is special. An arrest is made quickly, clues push the policeman to dive deeper into the hidden behaviour of the locals. "What kind of darkness is truly at play here?" is the question that lingers on his mind. A mysterious, unique film-noir throwback with some intriguing meta scenes within it. Moroccan Sci-Fi Thriller 'Animalia' Trailer About an Alien Encounter

"Don't let fear stop you." Dark Star Pictures has revealed the official US trailer for an impressive indie sci-fi mystery thriller titled Animalia, a French-Moroccan production about a pregnant woman in Morocco. This initially premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival last year and it also played at plenty of other major festivals throughout 2023, including Vancouver and London. The film won a Sundance New Vision award and brings "the arrival of a new, freshly original cinematic voice" in French-Moroccan director Sofia Alaoui. As she nears the end of her pregnancy, Itto and her in-laws find their lives changed by a supernatural event. A story about a woman who discoverers emancipation when aliens arrive in Morocco. That's the big pitch, though there's also an intriguing psychological thriller angle to this story as well. Starring Oumaïma Barid as Itto, Mehdi Dehbi, Fouad Oughaou, and Souad Khouyi. First Look Footage for 'Watchmen Chapter I & II' Animated Movies

"There is good, and there is evil, and evil must be punished." So Rorschach says... Warner Bros has debuted a first look teaser for an upcoming animated adaptation of the celebrated Watchmen graphic novel. Back in 2009, Zack Snyder adapted the groundbreaking graphic novel into an epic 3 hour long movie (to mixed reviews). Which was extended into the "Ultimate Cut", including animated segments of "Tales of the Black Freighter" from the original book. There was also a Motion Comic version released in 2009. Later came the "Watchmen" series on HBO in 2019, a complete re-interpretation from Damon Lindelof (which was totally awesome, btw). Now, it appears that WB is adapting the entire book (written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Dave Gibbons) once again. It seems to be sticking with the same story, with some visuals reinvented, though most of it looks mostly familiar. There's only 30 seconds of footage here so far, and barely anything else is known about it yet. Created with CGI animation featuring some interesting 2D stylization on 3D characters. When thugs board a train and start attacking passengers in a train heist, the train soon becomes a combat battleground as a pair of commandos face the entire army of invading bandits. Awesome Full Trailer for India's 'Kalki 2898 AD' Massive Sci-Fi Movie

"A new world will rise." Damn!! Fire this up right away - it's a must watch. An incredible full trailer has dropped for an epic Indian sci-fi movie called Kalki 2898-AD. We first posted about this movie about a year ago when the first teasers debuted at SDCC. Now it has a final release date set - June 27th worldwide (so, everywhere, hopefully?!) - and one amazing new official trailer to enjoy. This is apparently India's most expensive movie ever made; it really does look like they spared no expensive making it massive & exciting. Plot details are sparse so far, but it's a Hindu religion inspired epic story with imagery that is reminiscent of Villeneuve's Dune. In Kalki 2898 AD, Indian mega star Prabhas plays a modern-day embodiment of Lord Vishnu who arrives to help save Earth and protect it from evil forces. Directed By Nag Ashwin, the film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Hassan, & Disha Patani. Interview: Composer Tom Holkenborg on Crafting 'Mad Max' Scores

"I consider myself, I call it, a 'full contact composer.' I'm not a guy that sits behind a piano with a piece of paper..." Now playing in theaters worldwide is the newest awesome George Miller post-apocalyptic action movie - Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie kicks ass and so does its score. Just like with Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa features a score composed by Dutch musician Tom Holkenborg. Before getting into composing scores for movies, Holkenborg went under the moniker "Junkie XL" and was a techno DJ and producer crafting electronica remixes and tracks galore. After achieving mega fame as Junkie XL, he moved into composing - one of his first scores is for the video game movie DOA: Dead or Alive (2006). He later composed the scores for the sequels 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), before being hired by George Miller to craft the intense rock n' roll score for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). It's one of my all-time favorite scores, I still listen to it all the time. So when I was offered a chance to chat with Holkenborg for an interview, I couldn't say no. Watch: Disney Animation's Brand New Donald Duck Short 'D.I.Y. Duck'

Everyone's favorite "Donald" is back! The iconic character Donald Duck returns in a brand new short film made by Disney Animation Studios. This premiered for streaming this past weekend to celebrate the 90th birthday, rather 90th anniversary, of the character created by the original Walt Disney and his animators (specifically Dick Lundy). The extra grumpy duck made his first cartoon appearance on June 9th, 1934 as a supporting character in the short The Wise Little Hen, and most recently appeared in Once Upon a Studio. The new short film is called D.I.Y. Duck, and it features Donald trying to fix a lightbulb in his home, going back-n-forth to the hardware store as more problems arise during his attempts to get the new bulb to work. Disney has also re-released a few remastered classic Donald Duck short films, including Crazy Over Daisy and Out on a Limb, with all of them launching for streaming on Disney+ for audiences to enjoy. Penny Lane's Doc 'Confessions of a Good Samaritan' Official Trailer

Sandbox Films has revealed the trailer for the documentary film titled Confessions of a Good Samaritan, the latest from excellent doc filmmaker Penny Lane (also of Nuts!, Hail Satan?, Listening to Kenny G). This first premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, and it will be debuting in June in select theaters. Director Penny Lane's decision to become a "good Samaritan" by giving one of her kidneys to a stranger turns into a funny and moving personal quest to understand the nature of altruism. Her new doc Confessions of a Good Samaritan is a provocative inquiry into the science, history, and ethics of organ transplantation, asking an ancient question in a whole new way: Who is your neighbor & what do you owe them? Sandbox Films says "we love films that ask big, messy questions at the intersection of science & society, and this film is one for the ages." Lane adds that: "I hope people will watch the film and feel motivated or inspired to consider organ donation. But the film isn't designed to convince anybody (to donate)." "You're invited to the party of the 14th century." The series is very loosely inspired by the 14-century story collection The Decameron, and is described as a soapy dark comedy. When The Black Death strikes hard in the Italian countryside in 1348, a handful of nobles retreat to a grand villa with their servants. But what starts as a wine-soaked sex romp descends into a race for survival. The series examines the all-too-timely theme of class struggles in the season of a pandemic, as a cast of misfits tries to outlast the bubonic plague pandemic in 1348 Florence. First Trailer for Adam Elliot's New Stop-Motion Film 'Memoir of a Snail'

Madman Films in Australia has unveiled the first trailer for the stop-motion animated film Memoir of a Snail, the latest creation from Australian animation filmmaker Adam Elliot. He won an Oscar in 2004 for his short Harvie Krumpet, but he is best known for his exceptional stop-motion film Mary and Max, which premiered at Sundance 2009. He's back again 15 years later with his second feature, which is premiering at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival before screening at the Melbourne Film Festival soon, too. A bittersweet memoir of a melancholic woman called Grace Pudel - a hoarder of snails, romance novels, and guinea-pigs. Set in 1970s Australia, Grace’s life is troubled by misfortune & loss. After their mom dies during pregnancy, she and her twin brother, Gilbert, are raised by their paraplegic-alcoholic former juggler father, Percy. Despite a life filled with love, tragedy strikes when Percy passes away in his sleep. The siblings are separated and thrust into different homes to grow up. With voices of Jacki Weaver, Eric Bana, Sarah Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Dominique Pinon, Magda Szubanski, with Nick Cave. Official Trailer for Indie Dramedy 'The Good Half' Starring Nick Jonas

"Thinking back on it now, it feels like there's two halves of my life." Utopia has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled The Good Half, which first premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. This is getting a quick theatrical debut in July (with Q&A screenings for two nights only) before hitting VOD later this summer. Nick Jonas, one third of the famous swanky boys known as the Jonas Brothers, stars as Renn Wheeland who returns home to Cleveland for his mother's funeral. Once there, he forges new relationships while healing old ones (featuring a cast with Brittany Snow, David Arquette, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Walsh, and Elisabeth Shue), before confronting his problems and trying to face his grief. The festival also adds: "featuring grounded & moving performances by a fantastic ensemble cast, this tender family dramedy offers an honest and nuanced approach to grief, regret, and healing."
