Looking Back: Drawings of the Best Films of 2024 by James Chapman
"Five times I cast my vote for you, Aldo. But I was wrong...." Another year is over, which means it's time to look back at the best films released over the last 12 months. Artist James Chapman, based in Leeds, UK, has just published his Top 10 Films of 2024 list on Instagram - by drawing an adorable little illustration for each & every favorite film. I've been an avid follower of Chapman for a few years already (we also posted his illustrations for 2022 and for 2023) and I am a big fan of his artistic style. He draws and colors images in a little notepad and includes the pens & markers in the shot every time. They make me smile every time. Each image is so clever. Many of these films are my faves, too (Conclave and Dune: Part Two and Sing Sing and Anora are also in my Top 10). Many critics put La Chimera on their list this year due to a late release (it was my #1 last year). This year he posted only 10 picks, and I've included all 10 images below. Click back over to IG for more details. His mini reviews within each image come from his Letterboxd. Check his Top 10 below. // Continue Reading ›

Quick Teaser for Glen Powell's 'Chad Powers' Football Comedy Series
"Big things are coming in 2025." 🏈 Hulu has revealed a first look teaser for a sports comedy series called Chad Powers, arriving for release sometime in fall 2025. This 15-second teaser doesn't have much footage but they're obviously trying to hype up Glen Powell as a football player during the current football season. When bad behavior nukes hotshot QB Russ Holliday's college career, he disguises himself (using facial prosthetics?!) and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers. The supremely talented Glen Powell (have you watched Hit Man yet?) stars as Powers - he also co-created, co-wrote, and is executive producing the series under his production co-banner Barnstorm Productions. The series stars Powell as Russ Holliday/Chad Powers, with Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, and Steve Zahn as Jake Hudson. So far so good, seems they want this to be Ted Lasso but for American football. Keep an eye out for it later in 2025. // Continue Reading ›

Marvel Anim's 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' Full Trailer
"With my help you'll achieve greatness." Marvel has revealed an official trailer for their next new animated Spidey series called Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man arriving for streaming this January on Disney+. "Every neighborhood needs a hero." Parker! This is a brand new take on a Spider-Man animated cartoon for kids created by animation writer Jeff Trammell. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (so YFNSM for short?) follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we've seen and a style that celebrates the character's early comic book roots. It's set in an alternate timeline where Norman Osborn becomes Parker's mentor instead of Tony Stark. The voice cast includes Hudson Thames as Peter, Colman Domingo as Osborn, Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, Zeno Robinson, Hugh Dancy as Octavius, and Charlie Cox as Daredevil. They've modernized it and Spidey also has his own livestream, to connect with the app-addicted youth nowadays. It seems like a fun time - though I still prefer Morales' Spider-Verse. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: 'The Boy Who Cheated Death' Animated Short with Many Styles
No matter how hard you might try to delay and/or hold off death, you can never stop or slow down time. It marches on without ever slowing down. Always... This lovely, mesmerizing animated short film called The Boy Who Cheated Death is about a young boy confronting the reality of death. The 5-minute animated short is created by a Vietnamese filmmaker named Pipou Phuong Nguyen who lives and works in France. This short features a handful of different animation styles – starting out with conventional hand-drawn 2D with various stop-motion vignettes, utilizing papercraft, fabric, felt, and more. It tells the story of a little boy who tries to hide his mother from Death - taking him on a journey across space and time, interacting with animals and nature. The point is not to leave people feeling sad, rather the film "invites you to embrace the fragility of life." Featuring original music by Antoine Duchêne. So maybe this boy can't really cheat death (can anyone?), but it seems like he does come to understand it better by the end of this story. Watch below. // Continue Reading ›

It's about the gritty & adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West. Adam Sandler dropped this 30-second teaser on social media today - to begin building the hype for a sequel to one of his most beloved movies. Happy Gilmore 2 is coming to Netflix in 2025 – 29 years after the original comedy hit theaters back in 1996. Happy Gilmore is considered one of the funniest sports comedies ever made, and one of Adam Sandler's best movies in his filmography. As part of his Netflix deal, they figured out the rights (the original movie is owned by Universal Pictures) and have already shot the sequel - bringing back his co-stars Julie Bowen & Christopher McDonald. The cast in this next one also includes Benito Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Ben Stiller, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, and Nick Swardson. First Teaser for Turkish Romance Series 'Lovers Anonymous' on Netflix
"Love is not to be blamed, people are. That's the miracle of life." Ain't that the truth! 💔 Don't blame love for everyone's craziness – it's just them. Netflix has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a new streaming series called Lovers Anonymous, about the kooky guy who runs a Love Hospital in Turkey. This isn't a reality series nor is it a schmaltzy Hallmark romantic comedy, thankfully. From the footage in this teaser, it looks like something along the lines of The Lobster or Fingernails or Equals. Cem, scarred by a childhood that crushed his trust in love, runs the "Love Hospital" (to cure those suffering from the "love disease") – until Hazal, who believes in the power of love, disrupts his life. Will they both change each other? Will Cem learn to appreciate the power of love? This stars Halit Ergenc, Funda Eryiğit, Rıza Kocaoğlu, Zerrin Nişancı, Selcuk Borak, İdil Fırat, Ceren Benderlioğlu, & Seda Akman. Actually seems like it might be good, with some sly commentary on modern romance and ideas on how to overcome romantic troubles. // Continue Reading ›

It'll be playing in cinemas nationwide starting December 25th, Christmas Day, this week. It also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger (one of the best supporting performances of the year), Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie. I finally had a chance to see this and it's exceptional - earning a spot on my Top 10 list just before the end of the year. This highly anticipated Netflix conspiracy series is about finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack (known as "Zero Day") that has caused chaos around the country. Trailer for 'Don't Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever' Netflix Doc
"It's just these rich Silicon Valley-types chasing the fountain of youth..." Indeed. Netflix has revealed the trailer for a documentary film called Don't Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever, focusing on the maniac who is trying to "live forever." Yet another doc about a hot topic from the news recently. How far would you go to live forever - or even just slow down the aging process? This new doc by filmmaker Chris Smith (also of Fyre, 100 Foot Wave, Sr., Bitconned, Wham!, Operation Varsity Blues, Jim & Andy) is told through intimate access to Bryan Johnson, a man who has dedicated his life to defy aging. Don't Die the doc examines the strange wellness practices one man is using to maintain youth & vitality, and the effect this journey has on himself & those around him. For the record I think this guy is totally nuts - he is just a performative narcissist who thinks he can crack the aging problem, rather than accepting the limits of life itself. This trailer makes it seem like it will glorify him, but I'm sure it'll also show those critical of him, too. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer for Doc Film 'Half-Life of Memory' About the Rocky Flats Plant
"That place should never, ever be inhabited by human beings." Freestyle Digital Media debuted the official trailer for a documentary titled Half-Life of Memory: America's Forgotten Atomic Bomb Factory. As much as it may seem like some conspiracy theory doc, it's anything but – it's the true story of an atomic bomb facility. The film tells the story of how the U.S. secretly manufactured thousands of atomic weapons in the suburbs of Denver, leaving behind a toxic legacy that will persist for many generations. Colorado's Rocky Flats plant produced a staggering 70K atomic bombs, each serving as a "trigger" for thermonuclear warheads. Concealed by U.S. government secrecy, the plant's fires, leaks, & illicit dumping of nuclear waste contaminated the Denver area with long-lived radioactive toxins. A major and highly visible plutonium fire sparked a decade of mass protests, culminating in an unprecedented FBI raid that ultimately shuttered the plant. Today, the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats continues to threaten public health, yet surprisingly few people are aware the plant ever existed. Me either! As someone who grew up in Colorado, I'm fascinated by this harrowing true story (the plant was shut down for good in 1992). Scary they got away with it for so long. // Continue Reading ›

David Wenham Stars as John Spitieri in Australia's 'Spit' Main Trailer
"I'm gonna get outta here, and when I do I'm gonna look after ya..." Transmission Films has revealed the main official trailer for the film Spit – yes that's the actual title for it. David Wenham stars as infamous criminal John Francis "Spit" Spitieri in Jonathan Teplitzky's film Spit - debuting in Australia next March. In the sequel to the award-winning crime comedy, Gettin' Square, ex-junkie John Spitieri returns to Australia, only to find himself locked up in an Immigration Detention Centre with a massive target on his back, as old enemies come looking for him, determined to settle old scores. Official US Trailer for 'Eat the Night' Crime Thriller + MMORPG Story
"Why are you doing that? Inevitably, it will backfire. Altered Innocence has revealed an official trailer for Eat the Night, a French crime thriller from the filmmaking duo Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel. This one first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year in the Directors' Fortnight section, and it played at the London Film Fest. The newest vision from Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel (known for Jessica Forever) is a bittersweet apocalyptic love story with a modern MMORPG twist. Suddenly Pablo falls for the mysterious Night, neglecting his sister and the game. While Appoline finishes the game, Pablo and Night become embroiled in a dangerous gang conflict, upending their reality. Starring Théo Cholbi & Lila Gueneau as Pablo & Apolline, with Erwan Kepoa Falé as Night, Mathieu Perotto, Eddy Suiveng, and Kevin Bago. Indie Horror Film 'When It Rains in L.A.' Trailer Starring Monroe Cline
"There is saying: 'when it rains in LA, disaster follows...'" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror film titled When It Rains in L.A., from filmmaker David M. Parks. Not to be confused with any other film that is about the rare time when it rains in Los Angeles. The horror film follows the story of an Eastern European girl who escapes the horror of losing her sugar daddy boyfriend in her own country. She travels to Los Angeles for a vacation with friends, where she faces the reckoning of the trauma she left behind... and the rain she unearthed coming there. This sounds like a drama about trauma but it's actually a slasher horror film about a masked murderer coming after her. Huh? Why? Is he seeking vengeance because she escaped from this sugar daddy? This is all so weird. When It Rains in LA stars Monroe Cline, Leslie Stratton, Mike Ferguson, Eric Roberts, Felix Merback, Natasha Stricklin, and LeeAnne Bauer. The funniest part about this is how fake the rain looks and yet it's needed for so many scenes in the film. Ha. // Continue Reading ›

Art Residency Comedy 'Not an Artist' Trailer with Haley Joel Osment
"Some paintings aren't curious enough for me to go 'what's that?' This doesn't have that quality..." Ha ha! Utopia has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy called Not an Artist, the second feature from filmmakers Alexi Pappas & Jeremy Teicher. This first premiered at the 2023 Austin Film Festival and will be on VOD in early 2025 to enjoy. A comedy making fun of artist residency programs! Zing! Pappas (A young woman) is accepted into a residency program created by the wealthy enigmatic benefactor known as "The Abbott" (RZA) for high-potential artists suffering from creative constipation. She's working on her art until her father unexpectedly shows up and disrupts the entire retreat. The indie comedy stars Matt Walsh (who co-wrote the script) with Ciara Bravo, Haley Joel Osment, "RZA", Cleopatra Coleman, Rosalind Chao, Betsy Sodaro, and Dan Bakkedahl. This reminds me of the quirky indies they used to make like Running with Scissors and Art School Confidential, and Matt Walsh looks like the funniest part about it. 🎨 // Continue Reading ›

Intense Trailer for 'Warfare' Movie from Alex Garland & Ray Mendoza
"Coming to you, or you coming to us?" A24 has unveiled the official trailer for a war movie called simply Warfare, the latest project (co-)directed by Alex Garland following his big action movie Civil War earlier this year. Warfare is actually co-directed by Alex Garland and the real life Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, telling his own stories (from memory) of what it was like to be there. A member of SEAL Team 5, Mendoza came to partner with Garland on Warfare after serving as his military supervisor on Civil War. The huge ensemble cast features: D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Michael Gandolfini, with Joesph Quinn and Charles Melton. This looks like Black Hawk Down and Come and See – a brutally honest depiction of how war is hell and how terrible it is. Just pure war movie intensity from start to finish. I'm a big fan of Will Poulter and I'm glad to see him in this - will be watching. // Continue Reading ›

Christopher Abbott co-stars with Julia Garner, plus Sam Jaeger, Matilda Firth, Ben Prendergast, and Benedict Hardie. This promo video features Leigh and his cinematographer Stefan Duscio discussing making the movie, including his biggest horror inspirations for it – The Fly and The Thing. "He stole what's mine... I'm stealing it back." Quiver Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for an indie Southern Gothic epic musical movie called The Devil and the Daylong Brothers, made by filmmaker Brandon McCormick as his first real feature. Set in the kudzu-choked backwaters of the American South, it follows three brothers on a blood-soaked, musical quest for revenge against their own father, who sold their souls to the Devil before they were born. The Daylong Brothers are on a quest to reclaim their souls, sold to the Devil by their dad. Another Action-Packed 'Captain America: Brave New World' Promo
"What if it's a trap?" Indeed what if it is? Marvel has revealed another new 60-second promo trailer for the MCU sequel Captain America: Brave New World - hitting theaters February 14th, 2025 in exactly two months. Almost time! From director Julius Onah comes the next Captain America evolution – Anthony Mackie stars as Sam Wilson, who has taken over as the new Cap from Steve Rogers after he retired at the end of the Avengers movies. Brave New World picks up with Harrison Ford as the US president, with the power dynamics in the world changing (a meta reference for sure). After an attack, Cap is asked to join the military - but he ends up in the middle of another international incident. The conspiracy noir side of this is the best part – but they're downplaying it now. The impressive cast includes Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Ramirez as a young Falcon, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, Shira Haas, Liv Tyler, Xosha Roquemore; plus an appearance by a Red Hulk, played by Harrison Ford. This looks like it might be entertaining, but it also seems like yet another generic Marvel movie and that's not so exciting anymore. // Continue Reading ›

This first premiered at FrightFest in the UK a few months ago, and will be out on VOD in the US to watch in January 2025. This gothic horror is set in Yorkshire, 1898. Her young son mentions he has a new friend who lives in the basement of their sprawling country estate. However, as the boy spends more time in the dark, cold space under the house, her concern begins to turn in to fear... Starring Becca Hirani, Marshall Hawkes, and Nicola Wright. First Trailer for 'Into the Deep' Shark Movie Featuring Richard Dreyfuss
"The ocean is a dangerous wonder. That kingdom is your kingdom, too." Signature Ent has revealed an official trailer for Into the Deep, yet another new shark movie to dive in with. This one is from filmmaker Christian Sesma, best known for a lot of junk B-movie action thrillers. Richard Dreyfuss returns to face off against the ocean's most deadly predator in this jaws-some underwater thriller. A group of divers searching for sunken treasure witness the murder of drug dealers by modern-day pirates, but a killer great white is determined not to let any of them escape its waters. A daughter must confront her greatest fear to survive and make it home alive. The movie stars Scout Taylor-Compton, Jon Seda, Stuart Townsend, and AnnaMaria Demara, along with Dreyfuss. This is an interesting concept mixing a pirate thriller with a shark horror. Still looks very cheap and cheesy, but hey, most shark movies are like this nowadays. Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

"Other hospitals are managing this crisis, you either step up or step aside." Ready to save some lives? Max has revealed the main official trailer for a new hospital drama series called The Pitt, set at a major hospital in Pittsburgh. The 15-episode Max drama series The Pitt, made by John Wells Productions & Warner Bros TV, created by R. Scott Gemmill and starring Noah Wyle, debuts in January 2025 for streaming on Max. The Pitt is a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a big and very busy hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. The massive cast features Noah Wyle (Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch), Tracey Ifeachor (Dr. Collins), Patrick Marron Ball (Dr. Langdon), Supriya Ganesh (Dr. Mohan), Fiona Dourif (Dr. McKay), Taylor Dearden (Dr King), Isa Briones (Dr Santos), Gerran Howell (Whitaker), Shabana Azeez (Javadi), and Katherine LaNasa (Dana Evans). Jack Quaid Can't Feel Pain in Action Comedy 'Novocaine' Official Trailer
"You gotta be careful dude. You can still die. You're not Wolverine!" Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for an action comedy called Novocaine, landing in theaters in March 2025 early next year. From the filmmaking duo Dan Berk & Robert Olsen comes this crazy new action flick. Which reminds me of the two super crazy Crank and Crank: High Voltage movies. Meet Nathan Caine. He feels no pain. When the girl of his dreams (played by Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nate turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back. Jack Quaid stars as Nate Caine (that name is a bit too similar to "novocaine" but that's obviously on purpose) along with Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Lou Beatty Jr., Van Hengst, Conrad Kemp, Jacob Batalon. This looks like a totally ridiculous concept that should make for a totally entertaining movie. Hopefully. Who's down? // Continue Reading ›

Scott Eastwood & Willa Fitzgerald in 'Alarum' Spy Action Thriller Trailer
"How do you know she's not playing you?" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an action thriller called Alarum, made by director Michael Polish. It's being dumped in January on VOD and in theaters - which means this is one to avoid. After the CIA discovers the whereabouts of two rogue spies, who have not only gone off-grid but have become husband and wife, all hell is unleashed on their winter honeymoon cabin resort in the woods by a consortium of international spy organizations who are after a "flight pill", aka a hard drive, and all of whom suspect the two may have joined a network of rogue spies known as the Alarum. The action thriller features Scott Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, Willa Fitzgerald, Mike Colter, Isis Valverde, & Joel Cohen. What even is this? "We're gonna go chaos-monkey on his ass!" Well that seems scary. Prime Video has unveiled the full official trailer for a movie titled You're Cordially Invited, a raucous new wedding comedy created & directed by filmmaker Nick Stoller (of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, The Five-Year Engagement, Neighbors 1 & 2, Bros). You're Cordially Invited follows a woman who is planning her sister's wedding and the father of another bride-to-be. Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon star as the double-booked hosts, with Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Wesley Mann, Jimmy Tatro, Celia Weston, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia. In 1909, several years after Korea is forced into becoming a Japanese colony, freedom fighters plot the daring assassination of Japan’s prime minister during their quest for independence. The film tells the true story of the 1909 assassination of Itō Hirobumi - who was the Prime Minister of Japan and former Resident General of Korea. Adorable Trailer for 'Every Little Thing' - Hummingbird Rescue Doc
"A shimmering film about love and resilience." Yes! Kino Lorber has finally unveiled an official trailer for a wonderful little film called Every Little Thing, which first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. I watched this at the world premiere and have never forgotten it - always on my mind. Now it's ready to open a year later after its debut! It's the story of a humble woman who takes care of and nurses hummingbirds back to health and re-releases them. Author and wildlife rehabber Terry Masear has an ambitious goal: to save every injured hummingbird in Los Angeles. But the path to survival is fraught with danger. This heart-expanding Sundance doc hit introduces audiences to Terry's diminutive patients through breathtaking slow-motion photography and emotional storytelling. I love this film! If you live anywhere where hummingbirds fly, you've probably heard or seen one fly into a window or glass door. What do you do next? She teaches us how to save them. It's such a wholesome, uplifting little film... I wrote in my glowing review: "Take a moment to appreciate & heal with this lovely doc film whenever you have a chance." Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

With the year winding down, it's time to look back and highlight some favorites from the world of movies. The past few years I've been putting together these collections of my favorite poster designs, highlighting the work (from real humans not AI!) that I think deserves extra attention because it is bold & eye-catching. Below is my personal selection of 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2024. These aren't necessarily the "best" rather they're my own favorites that stuck with me. The only qualification is that they must be official posters released by the distributor, not fan art or other posters created unofficially. This year I was drawn to really light, colorful, vivid designs that also follow the golden rules of graphic design. I like colors! Always gets me. Turn up that saturation, make it brighter. I'm a sucker for strong visuals always enjoy watching for new poster drops all year, hoping for some real winners. Official Trailer for 'Los Frikis' Film - Coming-of-Age Set in 1990s Cuba
"You can't expect to hold onto anything, Gustavo." The official trailer is available for a new film titled Los Frikis, a coming-of-age film from 1990s Cuba based on a true story. This indie drama is the latest creation from the two filmmakers behind the indie hit The Peanut Butter Falcon from a few years ago. And it's also produced by Academy Award winning producers Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Inspired by a real story, Los Frikis is a coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba where a group of punk rockers in search of freedom deliberately inject HIV in order to live at a government-run treatment home so they can create their own utopia - since they can't otherwise. There, in a world meant for isolation, they carve out their own anarchic utopia—an oasis of rock 'n' roll 🤘, joy, and independence. Wow what a crazy story! Must See Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller 'The Gorge' from Scott Derrickson
"Contact with the other side is strictly forbidden." Apple + Skydance have revealed the official trailer for an intriguing new sci-fi action thriller called The Gorge, a new film directed by Scott Derrickson (of Sinister, Doctor Strange, The Black Phone 1 + 2). This is ready to drop on Apple TV+ beginning in February, just in time for Valentine's Day, early next year - unfortunately it's only getting a streaming debut and no theatrical release (as far as we know). Two highly-trained sniper operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts within guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. Despite the corrupt and lethal world they operate in – they still find a soulmate in each other. Ah so that's why it's a Valentine's Day release. It co-stars Anya Taylor-Joy & Miles Teller, as well as William Houston, Samantha Coughlan, Alessandro Garcia, Greta Hansen, and featuring Sigourney Weaver.
