First Teaser Trailer for Netflix's 'Sly' Doc Film About Sylvester Stallone
"What is healthier – to live under the illusion that you could have been great...? Or actually have an opportunity to be great, and then you blow it, and you realize you're a failure...?" Netlfix has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a new documentary film titled Sly, a biopic profile of the iconic actor Sylvester Stallone. This is a good follow-up to Netflix's other doc about the other hunky action star Schwarzenegger, titled simply Arnold. They're using the same one-name setup again. For nearly 50 years, Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and franchises, from Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables. This retrospective doc is an intimate look at the beloved actor & writer & director & producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog-story with the indelible characters he has brought to life. If you're into docs about actors, I also recommend the doc Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. Not much in this teaser, it's only a first look. // Continue Reading ›

"Requesting return to the Halo orbit." CJ Entertainment has revealed two teaser trailers for their new sci-fi movie called The Moon, a space survival movie that seems like a Korean cross between The Martian and Apollo 13. It's written and directed by the Korean filmmaker Yong-hwa Kim, also best known as the creator of the LittleBigPlanet video game. It depicts the struggle of an astronaut who accidentally becomes isolated in space, and the rescue plan led by former head of a space center. Jae-Kook back down on Earth tries to save him. Official Trailer for Violent Thriller 'The Passenger' Starring Kyle Gallner
"If I'm gonna help you, then I can't have you getting in my way. Because it forces me to hurt you. I need you to work with me, not against me." Paramount and MGM+ have revealed an official trailer for an action thriller horror crossover called The Passenger, the latest from the genre filmmaker Carter Smith (of The Ruins, Jamie Marks Is Dead, and Swallowed - also released earlier this year). Not to be confused with Jack Nicholson's 1975 film also called The Passenger. This is a Blumhouse production, produced by Jason Blum, that will be dropping on VOD directly in August. A man is forced to face his fears and confront his troubled past. He must find a way to survive when his co-worker snaps and goes on a violent killing spree, taking him along for the ride. Harris Dickinson in Excellent Fatherhood Indie Film 'Scrapper' Trailer
"Didn't think I needed you... And I don't need you to replace mum." Picturehouse in the UK has revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed indie film titled Scrapper, marking the feature directorial debut of British filmmaker Charlotte Regan. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at the Istanbul, Beijing, Seattle, and Sydney Film Festivals. A joyful comedy bubbling with hope, Scrapper stars Harris Dickinson (from Triangle of Sadness) and Lola Campbell. Georgie, a dreamy 12-year-old girl, lives happily alone in her London flat, filling it with magic. Suddenly, her estranged father Jason turns up and forces her to confront reality. It's a remarkably subversive film showing - what if a father can heal and get better and become everything he is supposed to be. Not the other way around, as usually depicted in films nowadays. It's really wonderful and I hope everyone will give it a look whenever it opens in the US later this year. "I told you they'd fight dirty." "We need to fight back." Samuel Goldwyn Films in the US has debuted their official trailer for this British feel good comedy titled Bank of Dave, which will finally be landing in the US this August. It first opened in the UK in January earlier this year. Based on the true-life experiences of Dave Fishwick; Bank of Dave tells the story of how a working class Burnley man and self-made millionaire fought to set up a small community bank. After working as a successful van salesman in the town, he gets involved lending to other locals which gives him the idea: Why not set up a tiny local bank that uses local money to fund local enterprise? He will call it: The Bank of Dave. The film stars Rory Kinnear (from Men and the Bond movies) as Dave, Joel Fry, Jo Hartley, Phoebe Dynevor, and features music and performances by Def Leppard. First Trailer for Vampire Movie 'Empire V' Set in Post-Modern Moscow
"A vampire employs the same mental constructs as a human but his thoughts follow a different path." An official trailer is available for a Russian film called Empire V, a vampire thriller from filmmaker Victor Ginzburg. Empire V is a social parody of modern Russian society being controlled by vampires. The film was originally set to be released by Sony in Russia in 2022. After the start of the Ukrainian war and one week prior to the film's release, it was pulled from theaters by the Kremlin and banned, making it a film without a country. It stars popular Russian rapper Oxxymiron, whose anti-war stance has recently led to him to be labeled a "foreign agent". Empire V follows a 19-year-old Moscow nobody who receives an invitation to join an elite and powerful echelon of society, only to discover the bloody secrets of a vampiric dictatorship who has controlled humanity since time immemorial. The movie also stars Pavel Tabakov, Taya Radchenko, Miron Fedorov, and Vera Alentova. It's premiering soon at the Fantasia Film Festival in July - but will anyone see it after then? Max Doc 'Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York' Trailer
"Queer bars were one of the few places where we could come and feel safe... And then, all the sudden, everything was taken away." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a four-part docu-series called Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York, and LGBTQ-themed true crime thriller. It will be released on HBO and streaming on Max starting in early July. Based on the book "Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York" written by Elon Green. As the AIDS crisis intensifies in the early 1990s, homophobia and hate crimes increase, and a serial killer preys on gay men in New York City by infiltrating the queer nightlife to identify his victims. The film highlights the prejudices and attitudes of the times, when deep-rooted biases in the criminal justice system and the media's distorted public perception of the victims undermined the investigation (all too similar to what's happening again nowadays). Featuring Matt Foreman, Bea Hanson, & David Wertheimer of the NYC Anti-Violence Project. Keep an eye out for this. // Continue Reading ›

Thrilling Trailer for 'The Dive' - She's Trapped Underwater While Diving
"You have to go to the surface and call for help!" RLJE Films has revealed the trailer for an underwater survival thriller titled The Dive, from German filmmaker Maximilian Erlenwein. Lucas Till & Ruby Rose in Elite Assassins Film 'The Collective' Trailer
"Found 'em! I'll send some guys..." Quiver Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for The Collective, a new action thriller from filmmaker Tom DeNucci (of Arlo: The Burping Pig, Johnny & Clyde). This is yet another of these junk action films, with a similar plot to so many others - involving hitmen and traffickers and taking out the "bad guys". A young recruit to a mysterious agency finds himself going rogue on his first assignment, tracking down a dangerous group of "untouchable" human traffickers. The Collective charts the story of a group of righteous assassins who take aim at a human trafficking ring that's backed by a network of billionaires. Lucas Till stars as Sam Alexander, a "rookie assassin", joined by Ruby Rose, Mercedes Varnado, Paul Ben-Victor, Tyrese Gibson, John Fiore, Levon Panek, plus Don Johnson as their leader. Gunslinger Western 'Dead Man's Hand' Official Trailer with Jack Kilmer
"Find Reno: you bring 'em to me, dead or alive." Lionsgate has revealed a trailer for an action western film called Dead Man's Hand, yet another of these dime-a-dozen junk action movies. When Reno kills a bandit in self-defense, he finds them both pulled back into his old ways. Must See Trailer for Atomic Bomb Espionage Doc 'A Compassionate Spy'
"Something gruesome & horrible was being constructed." Magnolia Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled A Compassionate Spy, made by the award-winning Chicago-based doc filmmaker Steve James (who's best known for Hoop Dreams, Life Itself about Roger Ebert, The Interrupters, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail). This premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival last year, and ended up being one of my favorite films of the festival. A Compassionate Spy tells the incredible story of Manhattan Project scientist Ted Hall, who shared classified nuclear secrets with Russia. Hall is interviewed extensively, along with his wife Joan Hall, and courageously tells his story in this. It's a very sensitive topic, especially nowadays, but fascinating to dig into - he was one of a few people who had worked on the atomic bomb at Los Alamos and shared its secrets to the Russians. He thought it would be wrong for America to be the only country with this extraordinary power. Does he regret this knowing what Russia became? "Why are they after me like that?" "They can't stand what you represent." Goldwyn Films has released an official US trailer for Simone: Woman of the Century, a French biopic about a woman named Simone Veil. "One of the prominent women in France in the 20th Century." The film explores her life, as a leading politician, human rights campaigner, and feminist -- through a series of non-chronological memories. Similar to the Bob Dylan film I'm Not There; this one is from the director of La Vie en Rose. Directed by Mark Cousins (also of The Eyes of Orson Welles and The Storms of Jeremy Thomas), My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock re-examines the vast filmography and the legacy of one of the 20th century's greatest filmmakers, Alfred Hitchcock, through a new lens: through the auteur’s own voice. In this doc film "written and narrated" by Hitchcock, the doyen of cinema reveals his tricks for creating tension with sound, manipulating viewers and telling stories to a new audience. This comedy made for kids stars Darby Camp, Emmy Liu-Wang, Valentina Herrera, Alex Cooper Cohen, Dallas Liu, Ramon Rodriguez Caroline Valencia, and Tituss Burgess as the hypnotist. This looks like something that every kid will laugh and laugh and laugh at. Even if it is derivative, it does kinda look fun I must admit. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: What Do the Sheep Know? 'Some Kind of Intimacy' Short Film
"The more time I spend with them, the more I feel that they know that there are people buried here." "Do you think animals know anything?" A good question, one that can never actually be answered because none of us will lever know what it's like to be an animal. But we can certainly wonder... Some Kind of Intimacy is a short film made by a British filmmaker named Toby Bull, and after playing at festivals for the past few years it's now available online to watch. Here is the pitch: A filmmaker tries to communicate with the sheep living where his parents are buried. It's as simple as that. He starts to wonder if they can sense his parents buried under the grass they're grazing on. The short film isn't even 6 minutes, but it gets you to think about things (life, death, souls, baaa?). "This minimalist film is huge, for it seizes a just intuition, a sort of vision," one review proclaims. Watching all these sheep reminds me of The Witch again. I'm sure Black Phillip knew. // Continue Reading ›

Short Trailer for Horror Film 'Natty Knocks' Featuring Robert Englund
"Natty knocks nine times! Don't answer your door, close all your blinds, hide under your bed, or she'll take off your head!" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Natty Knocks, from filmmaker Dwight H. Little. It's set to open in July if any horror fans are curious about this one. Natty Knocks stars Bill Moseley, Danielle Harris, and Robert Englund, as well as Charlotte Fountain-Jardim in the lead role as the babysitter, Thomas Robie, Noen Perez, and Jason James Richter. This doesn't look half bad, with a cool concept involving the meta horror movie elements worked into it. Will it actually be scary? Hard to tell. // Continue Reading ›

"I just got dumped by my future." This initially premiered at the 2021 New Zealand Film Festival, before also screening at many other fests in 2022: Berlinale, SXSW, Melbourne, Edinburgh, Philadelphia. Set to open in US art house theaters this June. Anxiety-ridden Millie is on her way from Wellington to New York for an internship at a prestigious architecture firm when a moment of panic causes her to miss her flight - so she pretends to be there anyway while camping out in New Zealand. It's been compared to Fleabag + Eighth Grade, which should be enough to get your attention. Starring Ana Scotney as Millie, Rachel House, Chris Alosio, Jillian Nguyen, & Sam Cotton. The GameStop $$ Movie: 'Dumb Money' Trailer with Dano & Davidson
"If he's in, I'm in." Sony has revealed the first trailer for a movie called Dumb Money, the big Hollywood fictional take on the infamous GameStop Wall Street story from a few years ago. There have already been tons of doc films made about this story (see: HBO's Gaming Wall Street, Netflix's Eat the Rich) but now we get Hollywood's take on it, from the same director of I Tonya, Cruella, "Pam & Tommy". "You can’t make this $hit up. Get invested in the insane true story that shocked the world." The film follows the Wall Street chaos after GameStop's stock skyrocketed due to Reddit. Paul Dano stars as the "regular guy" who stars it all, named Keith Gill. The main cast includes Pete Davidson, Vincent D'Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen. This looks like good fun, but it also looks kinda vacuous, like all the Wall Street bros in it. And they don't know how to market it other than The Wolf of Wall Street all over again. (HBO) Max has revealed an official trailer for the film Gray Matter, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Meko Winbush. Aurora has known all her life from her mother that the superhuman abilities they have also make them dangerous. Now, Aurora will discover if her mother was speaking the truth on one fateful and fatal night. Gray Matter stars Mia Isaac as Aurora, with Jessica Frances Dukes, Garret Dillahunt, Andrew Liner, Isabella Ferreira, Kristian Flores, Ezri Walker, and Allison Ye. Official Trailer for 'The Beanie Bubble' Starring Zach Galifianakis as Ty
"Have you considered poisoning him?" "Countless times..." Apple has revealed the first look official trailer for a new movie called The Beanie Bubble, a fictional story about the crazy guy who created the world-famous Beanie Babies plush toy line and turned them into a hugely profitable worldwide you-gotta-have-them trend. They're making more and more movies like this nowadays because these guys are totally nuts and they don't deserve this money for tricking people into buying stuffed animals, and they got away with it anyway (and we all bought them, of course). But I'm not supposed to say this, right? "Capitalism, dial-up Internet, and bean-filled plush animals" in The Beanie Bubble. "I look at the man in the car besides me – who is he?" Cohen Media has revealed an official US trailer for a cinema nerd documentary titled The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, one of the other recent projects from Irish cinephile filmmaker Mark Cousins. This first premiered in 2021 at the Cannes Film Festival, mainly because it's about going to Cannes, but it also played at the London and Vienna Film Fests as well. An off-beat grand tour that will take in landmarks and many people connected to the producer's life and films as they drive across France to the iconic festival. For this journey, he's joined by acclaimed filmmaker Mark Cousins who recaps his life. Illustrated with a dazzling range of film clips and rich in insights about creativity / survival, The Storms of Jeremy Thomas is a road movie portrait of France, a film school, and–in the era of streaming & corporatization–a passionate call to arms for movies that get to the heart of life. Ella Lily Hyland & Aidan Turner in 'Fifteen-Love' Tennis Series Trailer
"All it takes is one person to believe her." Amazon has unveiled a first look trailer for a new British crime drama series titled Fifteen-Love, without a streaming date announced yet. This seems to be a response to Luca Guadagnino's Challengers, which just got its own trailer yesterday, another romantic drama involving a young woman who's a tennis prodigy. Is this meant to be counter-programming? Or just another tennis-based story? Set in the world of elite tennis, the drama portrays Justine as a one-time rising star whose sudden success at 17 took her and her coach Glenn Lapthorn to the quarterfinals of the French Open. The former tennis prodigy makes an allegation against her former coach five years after an injury puts a stop to her career. Ella Lily Hyland stars as Justine, with Aidan Turner as her coach, plus Anna Chancellor, Jessica Darrow, Tom Varey, Lorenzo Richelmy, Manon Azem, and Elizabeth Berrington. Richard Armitage is a Vatican Operative in 'The Man from Rome' Trailer
"The deaths – are they accidents... or murder?" Screen Media Films has unveiled the official trailer for a thriller titled The Man from Rome, which is the English title given to this Spanish film starring Richard Armitage in Italy. This already opened in Europe last year under the original Spanish name La Piel Del Tambor, though it doesn't seem like it's good enough to get a proper theatrical release in the US. Vatican intelligence operative Father Quart (Richard Armitage) investigates an anonymous message sent to the pope concerning a crumbling Spanish church that "kills to defend itself". Sent to Seville to investigate, a deep conspiracy unfolds that puts Father Quart's loyalty and his faith to the test. Armitage co-stars with Amaia Salamanca, Paul Guilfoyle, Paul Freeman, Rodolfo Sancho, Fionnula Flanagan, Carlos Cuevas, along with Franco Nero as "El Papa", The Pope. This looks so wacky - Vatican hackers, a priest with a gun, businessmen demolishing a church. Wild. No wonder this is a Redbox release, seems like made-for-TV junk. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: A John Williams Featurette for 'Indiana Jones - Dial of Destiny'
"John's music is unparalleled... It's just incredible. How original and how powerful the themes are that John creates for each element of the film." Maestro! The best! Lucasfilm has posted a new promo featurette for James Mangold's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which will be landing in theaters in a few weeks, focusing on legendary composer John Williams. Some may recall that last year we posted a video of Williams performing "Helena's Theme" from Dial of Destiny at a Hollywood Bowl performance before we even knew who Helena was. Now with the movie about to open, this featurette is a reminder of how glorious and iconic Williams is and all of his themes are. This is expected to be Williams' very last score after decades of work, though you never know. The video features Steven Spielberg, James Mangold, Harrison Ford, and Kathleen Kennedy talking about the magic of John Williams, along with some shots of him on the sound stage recording with the orchestra. A heartfelt reminder of how important a great score is when finishing a film, and how Indy's theme will be remember forever and ever. This sequel is worth seeing on the big screen. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for German Sci-Fi Thriller 'Paradise' About Eternal Youth
"This woman stole 40 years from you. We're going to take them back." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a German sci-fi thriller feature film titled Paradise, from filmmaker Boris Kunz. It's premiering this week at the 2023 Munich Film Festival, hence the trailer dropping now. It's a dystopian look at a future where we've commoditized our "youth", human aging, to always stay young. A man sees the dark side of the time-manipulating biotech company he works for when a crushing debt forces his wife to give up 40 years of her own life. Trade your life for money: In the not-too-distant future, a method of transferring years of your life from one person to another has changed the world forever and turned biotech start-up AEON into a billion-dollar pharmaceutical company. When his wife has to pay debts by giving up 38 years, everything changes for this couple. The film stars Kostja Ullmann, Iris Berben, Numan Acar, Marlene Tanczik, Alina Levshin, Lisa-Marie Koroll, and Corinna Kirchhoff.
