"It builds on itself with time to become this. That's a story. That's a life well lived." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a breathtaking documentary film about trees, yes indeed about the magnificence of trees, with the title Trees and Other Entanglements. Altitude Films from the UK has revealed the first official trailer for a crazy survival thriller movie called No Way Up, made by a Swiss action director named Claudio Fäh. It's expected to arrive in early 2024, with no US release date confirmed so far. No Way Up is a high concept combination of disaster movie and survival thriller. "A musical and spiritual journey to rediscover what matters most in life." Goldwyn Films has revealed an official US trailer for a Italian adventure musical called The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli. Arriving on VOD this December after first premiering earlier this year. The doc follows the blind, religious Italian singer named Andrea Bocelli as he embarks on a journey following the Via Francigena, an ancient road traveled for centuries by pilgrims - they ride 200 miles on horseback throughout Italy. Merging world-class music with intimate conversations in the awe-inspiring Italian countryside, it is an exploration of the moments that define us, the songs that inspire us, and relationships that connect us to what matters most in life. Featuring Andrea Bocelli, Tori Kelly, Michael W. Smith, Katherine Jenkins, Tauren Wells, and Clara Barbier Serrano. "You'll be swept away by The Journey of beautiful music, creation, faith, and love." This looks like an emotional and passionate performance piece. It very obviously has a strong religious edge to it, not simply another musical. This trailer comes in gorgeous 4K quality as well - as least Italy looks nice. // Continue Reading ›

After a long time waiting he loses all hope of escaping from this gloomy life. However, his colleague Nuray helps him to regain perspective. The latest deeply philosophical drama from Ceylan is a work of elegant, novelistic filmmaking, rigorously unpacking questions of belief versus action, the tangible versus the enigmatic, and who we wish to be versus how we live... In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been flying a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes mountains. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived. "Why do I pull out my hair?" That's the question Kelly typed into Google one day while in lockdown. And she ended up on a journey into the depths of the internet, spiraling around the hallowed halls of Google. Trichotillomania! is an animated short made by filmmaker Kelly Schiesswohl (aka "kelly4.me") based in NYC. It's a very personal film created during the pandemic while in lockdown, literally "what should I do besides Google search whatever is on my mind." It's all about what happens when someone tries to search at home for a medical diagnosis. It's never a good idea, but we all do it. Of course. The film uses a few different animation techniques, mainly 2D drawings along with some felt stop-motion scenes. It's a clever little 4-min film addressing neuroses and anxieties. Just about everyone should connect with this, even if you've never searched for this specific disorder, there's probably something else you've stumbled upon thanks to Google that shocked you. Full Trailer for Indian Action Thriller Film 'Animal' About Father & Son
"Experience a father son bond carved in blood." AA Films in India has revealed a trailer for another epic Indian movie called Animal, from filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Opening worldwide soon, including in the US - where it's showing in 800+ theaters, the highest number for a Hindi movie, surpassing the screen counts of Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) and Jawan (2023). What is it about? The synopsis are all rather vague. They say it's about "a son's love for his father." Often away due to work the father is unable to comprehend the intensity of his son's love. The son, Arjun, undergoes a remarkable transformation as the bond with his father begins to fracture, and he becomes consumed by a quest for vengeance. Looks like it's about a group of gangsters battling other gangsters? With a runtime of 201 minutes, Animal is one of the longest Indian films ever made (even longer than RRR at 182 mins). Anil Kapoor & Ranbir Kapoor star as father & son (same last name but they're not related), with Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Tripti Dimri. It premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, including my own, proclaiming it as one of the finest food films ever made. Juliette Binoche stars as Eugénie, an outstanding cook, who has worked for the famous Dodin Bouffant (as played by Benoît Magimel) for 20 years. However, Eugénie, eager for her own freedom, has never wanted to marry Dodin. So Dodin decides to do something he's never done before: cook for her. Oh it's so incredible. All of it – the food, the romance. The cast includes Bonnie Chagneau Ravoire, Galatéa Bellugi, and Sarah Adler. I adore this film! Review: Radu Jude's 'Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World'
There's a new film from Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude playing on the film festival circuit this year. It's called Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World, which is an apt title for another film from Jude showing how mindless & idiotic humans have become, all the while everyone is going around ignoring what's really happening because they have a job to do and a life to live. After earning high praise from critics during its premiere at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival, I was lucky to catch up with Jude's Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF) a few months later. Based on all the hyperbolic buzz out of Locarno, I was expecting something close to masterpiece alas it's far from that. Radu Jude certainly is a master filmmaker creating provocative, subversive, clever films about how depraved society is – but this one is a mess. There's a handful of good ideas in here, but the opening & closing segments are so disconnected from the rest, holding it back from being a truly important work of art. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: 'Best Friends on a Summer Hike' - A Nice Comedic Short Film
"Well... shall we head back?" This short film is an exceptional example of minimalistic filmmaking and how much can be said without having to actually say much at all. Enjoy this in full below. Best Friends on a Summer Hike is a brisk 8-minute short film made by a Brazilian filmmaker named Mario Furloni, who is now based in Southern California working mainly as a cinematographer (on Crip Camp and The Return). He also shot this short film, in addition to writing and directing and producing and editing it. There's not much of an intro to this short - Furloni describes it as a "cautionary tale." That description should all make sense if you watch closely. It's about two old best friends who go for a hike up and down a hill overlooking the ocean. One could say it's kind of like the brilliant My Dinner with Andre but if it was only 8 minutes and instead took place on a quick hike. Best Friends on a Summer Hike stars John Craven and Charles Shaw Robinson. With a few stunning long takes, this film has plenty to offer even though there's not much to it. // Continue Reading ›

A Quick Visit to the 2023 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia
Awooooo!! There's a charming festival up in the Baltic country of Estonia called the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Also known locally as PÖFF (which stands for Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival in Estonian) the festival just celebrate its 27th year with a 2 and 1/2 week cinema celebration. It kicked off on November 3rd and ran through November 19th in downtown Tallinn, with tons of screenings & premieres every single day. It's much longer than a regular festival because they like to let the films play and give locals a chance to come watch them in the evenings, with hundreds of films in the line-up to choose from. There's also a big industry event at the end of the fest, which is when I was in town for a visit. PÖFF flew me up to Tallinn this year (from Berlin) and offered me a hotel room so that I can experience the festival in person. It was a very nice trip and I'm glad I could visit to watch some more films, though I arrived a bit late and couldn't catch as many as I really hoped to watch. It's a well-run festival overall, with a great selection of the year's best films. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Ukraine War 'Glory to the Heroes' Doc Film Sequel
"Your first mission is to come back safe." Cohen Media Group has revealed an official US trailer for another Ukraine war documentary film titled Glory to the Heroes, which will be showing in very limited theaters this December. Directed by Bernard-Henri Lévy, and co-directed by Marc Roussel, this film is a follow-up "sequel" doc to their other film called Slava Ukraini, which opened in theaters in May 2023 earlier this year. Official US Trailer for Lila Avilés' Heartfelt Drama 'Tótem' from Mexico
"A luminous and soul-nourishing microcosm." Janus Films + Sideshow have revealed an official US trailer for an acclaimed Mexican drama titled Tótem. It initially premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, one of the few great films at the festival that should've won the top prize. Mexican director Lila Avilés's film Totem is about a family getting ready for a birthday party, told through the eyes of a young girl. Seven-year-old Sol spends the day at her grandfather's home, helping with the preparations for a surprise party for her ailing father. Throughout the day, chaos slowly takes over, fracturing the family's foundations. Sol will embrace the essence of letting go as a release for existence. It's a wonderfully soulful, touching film about family and life on this planet - don't skip over this one. The ensemble cast features Naíma Sentíes, Monserrat Marañon, Marisol Gasé, Saori Gurza, Teresita Sánchez, Mateo García Elizondo, Juan Francisco Maldonado, and Iazua Larios.
