Classic Trailer Rewatch: 1998's 'The Negotiator' with Samuel Jackson

"Make me believe why I should deal with you ever again!" Time for yet another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. Back to the 90s for another big summer movie from that era. The Negotiator was one of the big summer movies in 1998, opening at the end of July after lots of early hype. I remember being very excited to watch it and find out what was going on, and I recall everyone else being into it, too. Strangely checking the box office numbers, it only ended up earning $44M on a $43.M budget. I thought it was a bigger hit - but I guess not! In a desperate attempt to prove his innocence, a skilled police negotiator accused of corruption and murder takes hostages in a government office to gain the time he needs to find the truth. I love the twist in this - the expert negotiator becomes the hostage taker and flips things on the cops. Samuel L. Jackson stars across from Kevin Spacey, with a cast including David Morse, Ron Rifkin, John Spencer, and J.T. Walsh. It was F. Gary Gray's third feature after making his debut with Friday in 1995. Khalid Gets Stuck in Bulgaria in Indie Comedy 'The Black Sea' Trailer

"A cinematic slam poem." Metrograph Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a film called The Black Sea, co-directed by NYC filmmaker Crystal Moselle after The Wolfpack and Skate Kitchen. This premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at the Seattle and Nashville Film Fests. Inspired by Derrick B. Harden's travels to Bulgaria, The Black Sea is the transformative journey of a man who finds unexpected connections in a small coastal Eastern European town even as he finds himself to be the only black person around. Starring Derrick B. Harden as Khalid (he also co-directed this), Irmena Chichikova, Samuel Finzi, and Stoyo Mirkov. One review nicely states: "For Harden, it's an impressive debut that raises questions about the difference between a tourist, refugee, and immigrant, and explores how sometimes you have to travel a long physical distance to find what’s always been inside yourself." Official US Trailer for 'Flow' Animated Film About Animals on a Boat

Meet a black cat and his friends. 🐈‍⬛ Sideshow + Janus have revealed the official US trailer for the animated film called Flow made by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis. This is his second feature after his other animated film Away (2019) and it originally premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It also won the Audience Award, Jury Prize, and Best Original Score at the Annecy Film Festival this year, which proves how acclaimed it is already. Flow is a stunning, totally dialogue free, mesmerizing movie about a group of animals trying to survive a world that is flooding. Cat is a solitary animal, but when its home is devastated by a great flood, he finds refuge on a boat populated by a few other species, and will have to team up with them despite their differences. I was quoted in the other Latvian trailer but didn't make the cut this time - I wrote a nice review at Cannes about this one. Anthony Mackie in Sci-Fi Creature Feature 'Elevation' First Look Teaser

"We're not meant to share the planet with those things..." Vertical Entertainment has revealed a first look teaser trailer for an exciting new sci-fi horror film coming this fall called Elevation, which was filmed in Colorado. It's directed by George Nolfi (of The Adjustment Bureau, The Banker) and has a November date - though no festival premieres yet at any of the genre fests. Set in the post-apocalyptic Rocky Mountains, a single father and two women venture from the safety of their homes to face monstrous creatures to save the life of a young boy. The film stars Anthony Mackie, Morena Baccarin, and Maddie Hasson. This has some big, gnarly monsters in it - the one in this teaser reminds me of the big guy from Bong Joon-ho's The Host. It amuses me that they shot this at some ski resort in Colorado while closed during the summer. Why not get a post-apocalyptic film crew in there when no one is around? This might be cool. Ana de Armas Stars in 'From the World of John Wick: Ballerina' Trailer

"How do I start doing what you do?" Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for the next John Wick movie that's not actually a John Wick movie though it actually is because he's sort of in it. This action spin-off is called Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as a ballerina-assassin named Eve. The full title of the movie is now From the World of John Wick: Ballerina and it's currently set to hit theaters everywhere in June 2025 next summer. Ana de Armas' character is a ballerina getting revenge hunting the murderers of her family. According to co-star Ian McShane, the character is under the protection of Winston & Charon in the New York Continental Hotel during most of the movie. The same character was previously portrayed by Unity Phelan in 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and this takes place before Chapter 4. The superb supporting cast includes Anjelica Huston, Keanu Reeves, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, and Ian McShane. Warner Bros UK has unveiled their official trailer for The Room Next Door, the first English language feature by beloved Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. It won the Golden Lion top prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival earlier this month (my review). Adapted from "What Are You Going Through" by Sigrid Nunez, the film opens in US theaters in December. It also opens in the UK starting in October. Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. Starring Julianne Moore as Ingrid & Tilda Swinton as Martha, with Alessandro Nivola, John Turturro, Alex Høgh Andersen, Melina Matthews, Juan Diego Botto, Victoria Luengo, and Esther McGregor. "I am free!" Well it's almost time. A few weeks left. Even though they already debuted a "final trailer" weeks ago, WB has unveiled yet another new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux. This one features one of the songs performed in the movie musical called "That's Life" with a montage of footage. The movie just premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (to mostly mixed reviews). This all-out Gotham City sequel is being described as a "musical psychological thriller" set in Gotham City, with song & dance worked right into the storyline. Lady Gaga co-stars as Joker's new partner Harley Quinn. Joaquin Phoenix returns as Arthur, with a cast including Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, & Harry Lawtey. The original Kill 'Em All first opened in 2017 directed by Peter Malota, though I can't remember anything about it. Who saw it? This sequel is being dumped direct-to-video next week. Philip and Suzanne, now agents partnered by the CIA, head to Europe on a new assignment. Jean-Claude Van Damme return as Philip, though Autumn Reeser as Suzanne from the first movie has been replaced by Jacqueline Fernandez as a character named Vanessa instead. The cast also includes Peter Stormare, Maria Conchita Alonso, Andrei Lenart, and Talia Asseraf. On the run, outnumbered, and fighting for their lives, this father and daughter unite to save themselves and the village that Phillip once called home. Venice 2024: Best of the Fest - Brady Corbet's 'The Brutalist' By a Mile

Each year, I am honored to have a chance to return to the beautiful city of Venice in Northern Italy to attend the Venice Film Festival and catch the latest films premiering there. This year's festival ended up being a mostly low-key, fairly uneventful event. Much like Cannes earlier in the summer, most critics went home wondering why it was such an unimpressive year. it's time to present my picks of my favorite films from Venice 2024. I've chosen only 6 of the best of the fest films that deserve to be highlighted - it's just not a "Top 10" year for fests. This was my eighth year returning to Venice, and I'm always glad to be back, even if there aren't a ton of great films. In total, I watched around 34 films at Venice this year, unfortunately only a handful of them were worthy. Brady Corbet's epic The Brutalist is the best film by a mile - nothing else is even remotely close to being in its league. It's a towering, monumental, majestic masterpiece and I'm glad we had the chance to experience it together at the festival during its initial unveiling. First Trailer for 'The Remarkable Life of Ibelin' Gamer Documentary

"It was just a virtual kiss, but boy I could almost feel it." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, formerly known as just Ibelin (the name of his game character) at its debut earlier this year. The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January, where it won the Directing Award and Audience Award in its doc category. Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer, died of a degenerative muscular disease at the young age of 25. His parents mourned what they thought had been a very lonely & isolated life, when they started receiving messages from online friends around the world. It turns out he was a devoted gamer, and had built a charismatic profile in World of Warcraft (WoW) as the character called "Ibelin" and was known by many. The film takes place partially in World of Warcraft, while also showing both sides of Mats. U Are the Universe is the title of a 101 minute indie sci-fi film written and directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Pavlo Ostrikov - his feature directorial debut after a few short films and TV series previously. Even more remarkable is that this feature film was entirely written and shot in Ukraine during the ongoing war that started when Russia invaded in 2022. Specifics as to how and where they filmed and how they pulled it off aren't yet available, but all that matters is they made a damn good sci-fi film in the middle of the hell of war in Ukraine. It's obviously a very minimal production - there's only one actor starring in the film, it's both written & directed by Ostrikov, along with a small team of producers and filmmakers behind-the-scenes. The set design, the sci-fi concept, the VFX, everything about this little film is impressive regardless of where or how or when it was made. Mubi has unveiled an official trailer for a film called Dahomey, the latest from French-Senegalese filmmaker known for her previous film Atlantics. Dahomey originally premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and won the top prize Golden Bear at the festival. Set in November 2021. 26 royal treasures of the Kingdom of Dahomey are about to leave Paris to return to their country of origin, the present-day Republic of Benin. Along with thousands of others, these historic artifacts were originally plundered by French colonial troops in 1892. But what attitude to adopt to these ancestors' homecoming in a country that had to forge ahead in their absence? The debate rages among students at the University of Abomey-Calavi. The film explores how the artifacts were returned from France to Benin, and the reactions of Beninese people.
