"I think stand-up seems wrought with so much insecurity." Hartbeat has revealed the first official trailer for a documentary titled Group Therapy, a film about comedians and mental health. This is premiering in a few weeks at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, hence the trailer showing up now before its debut. Cannes 2024: Coralie Fargeat's Freaky Body Horror 'The Substance'
What would you do to stay beautiful forever? This is a question that remains on the minds of many human beings on this planet. What will they do, how far will they go? What will they sacrifice? It's pretty much the Monkey's Paw concept mixed with an obsession with "beauty above all, always." The immensely talented French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat takes this concept for a totally bonkers ride in her exciting new body horror film The Substance, a vibrant spin on this trope about sacrificing oneself for endless beauty. The Substance in question is a mysterious medicinal creation from an unnamed company that allows anyone to stay beautiful - as long as they follow the rules. Much like in Gremlins, however, someone is going to break the rules and the rest of the film becomes "fuck around and find out" with the most grotesque, horrifying consequences anyone could imagine. And the crowd goes wild! The Cannes press screening audience nearly lost it - cheering and hollering and applauding ferociously at the end. This is what great horror is all about. // Continue Reading ›

Gustaf SkarsgÄrd & Andrea Riseborough in New 'What Remains' Trailer
"He needs to be heard. He's a victim, too." VMI has revealed a new official US trailer for the thriller film What Remains, a Finish production featuring the SkarsgĂ„rd family in many roles. This initially premiered in 2022 and played at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival but has never been given a release until now - opening in the US on VOD later in June. At a Scandinavian psychiatric hospital, an uneasy triumvirate of multiple murderer Mads, therapist Anna, and policeman Soren, all have a vested interest in unearthing the truth, and a deepening co-dependency threatens to consume them all. Who will uncover what's really going on? Based on a true story, making this yet again another true crime film to feed to the true crime-obsessed audiences these days. Starring Gustaf SkarsgĂ„rd, Andrea Riseborough, Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd, Jussi Kostamo, Ăva Magyar, and Antti Luusuaniemi. This seems unsettling with a series of great performances at least. // Continue Reading ›

Filming an Apocalyptic Prequel in 'A Quiet Place: Day One' Featurette
"The world is coming to an end, and how does one best manage the emotional rollercoaster?" Paramount has debuted a first look featurette for the sci-fi prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, arriving in theaters very soon at the end of June this summer. This making of promo features the cast explaining this story being set in New York City at the start of the alien invasion when the creatures first arrive. Lupita Nyong'o stars as a woman named Sam in NYC caught up in all of the apocalyptic mayhem. As every street goes quiet, she is thrown together with a man named Eric. With some reluctance, the pair agree to navigate and survive the city together. And she has a cat. The cast also includes Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, and Denis O'Hare. To top it off, this is directed by the same filmmaker who last made Nicolas Cage's Pig movie. There's not enough actual behind-the-scenes shots in this video, but I am glad to see they spared no expense pulling off a large-scale sci-fi creature feature flick. Gotta make it look BIG! Yeah I'm down for this. // Continue Reading ›

Eccentric Trailer for Experimental, Surreal Dance Short Film 'Catharsis'
"Your anger and anxiety rule your life." A festival trailer has launched for a surreal, experimental short film titled Catharsis, from a new filmmaker named Brian Logvinsky. For those curious, this will be premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City this summer, hence why this trailer is dropping now to build some early buzz. A dancer savant named Alex with serious anger issues is about to sabotage his life until a strange psychotherapist brings him to face the shadows of his subconscious mind... The short film runs 17 minutes and it's described as an "avant-garde, neo-noir film." Within the void of hypnosis, Alex faces his worst fears and darkest truths. Karen Gillan is a Struggling Musician in Comedy 'Late Bloomers' Trailer
"I was just trying to take care of her." Vertical has revealed the trailer for an indie dramedy film titled Late Bloomers, marking the feature directorial debut of director Lisa Steen. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it played at the Sarasota, Seattle, Memphis, Philadelphia, Palm Springs Film Fests as well. Louise is a 28-year-old Brooklynite adrift in life, who now finds herself grappling with her identity as a musician. She ends up in the hospital after drunkenly breaking her hip. An encounter with a cranky elderly Polish woman who speaks no English that's in the same room as her in the physical therapy ward leads to a job caring for her. Neither likes it, but it's time to grow up. As they navigate their begrudging relationship, they confront the realities of aging, forcing Louise to consider her own journey into adulthood. Karen Gillan co-stars with Malgorzata Zajaczkowska (aka Margaret Sophie Stein) as Antonina, plus Jermaine Fowler, Kevin Nealon, & Talia Balsam. This seems amusing and heartfelt, it's worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

First UK Trailer for Terrific Film 'The Outrun' Starring Saoirse Ronan
"I have a life that I have to get back to..." Studiocanal UK has debuted their trailer for The Outrun, which premiered at both the 2024 Sundance & Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year. This acclaimed film is based on Amy Liptrot's bestselling memoir, telling the story of an alcoholic woman who returns to her homeland - the remote Orkney Islands located off the northern coast of Scotland at the very top of the UK. After living life on the edge in London, Rona attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. She returns to the wild beauty of Scotland's Orkney Islands (where she grew up) hoping to heal. Starring Saoirse Ronan as Rona in one of her best performances yet. The Outrun is a searingly honest drama about addiction, survival and the power of nature to restore life and renew hope, set in the wild northern Orkney islands. This is one of my favorite films of 2024 so far (here's my full review), it'll likely be on my Top 10 at the end of the year. It also stars Saskia Reeves, Stephen Dillane, Lauren Lyle, Izuka Hoyle, & Paapa Essiedu. This trailer does a fairly good job capturing the splendor of this wonderful film, which I will be recommending all year. // Continue Reading ›

First Look Trailer for Leos Carax's 'It's Not Me' Self-Portrait Short Doc
"The Unhoped For." Les Films du Losange in France has revealed a first look trailer (with English text) for the latest unique Leos Carax film titled It's Not Me. This just premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and opens in France this June. The 41-minute biopic short doc film is a "self-portrait of the director and his oeuvre, revisiting in free-form more than 40 years of the author's filmography." This autobiography takes a look back at all of his films and his work, and examines politics over time and the art-form of cinema. The intro: "For an exhibition, that in the end never took place, the Pompidou Museum asked the filmmaker to reply, in pictures, to the question: Where are you at, Leos Carax? He attempts an answer – full of questions. About himself and 'his' world: I don't know, but if I did, I'd reply that..." C'est pas moi or It's Not Me. With Denis Lavant, Kateryna Yuspina, Loreta Juodkaite, Anna-Isabel Siefken, Nastya Golubeva Carax, and Petr Anevskii, plus Bianca Maddaluno. Not much footage yet, but enough to make me intrigued. Official Trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos' Triptych Film 'Kinds of Kindness'
"Open your eyes, and look clearly at what's going on around you..." Searchlight Pictures has just unveiled another official trailer for Kinds of Kindness, the brand new Yorgos Lanthimos film arriving this summer to watch. It just premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival a few weeks ago, where Jesse Plemons won the Best Actor award at the end of the fest (here's our review). This triptych film features three medium-length stories in one long feature (that runs almost 3 hours in total). As his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness is described as an anthology film with three segments - following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability. The exquisite ensemble cast in this: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer, and Krystal Alayne Chambers. "Who are you?" "I'm here to take care of your problem." Sony Pictures & Apple Original Films reveal the first official trailer for Wolfs, an action comedy coming to theaters later this year (and eventually streaming on Apple TV+). Wolfs is the latest movie from director Jon Watts, who is taking a break from Spider-Man after making the three MCU movies before: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. Though he's sticking around in NYC. The film follows two lone wolf fixers who are assigned to the same job. George Clooney and Brad Pitt (reteaming again after the Ocean's movies), two "lone wolves", are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. The cast also includes Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Irina Dubova, Poorna Jagannathan, with Zlatko BuriÄ. Featuring some slick cinematography by Larkin Seiple. This seems like a good one! Cannes 2024: Abou Sangare is Unforgettable in 'Souleymane's Story'
This is the story of Souleymane. This is a story we need to hear. This is a story we need to understand. By now there's an entire subgenre of modern day refugee films - important, real stories about immigrants and refugees and asylum seekers struggling to make it safely into Europe and survive under the crushing weight of anti-immigration people and policy (also see: Green Border or Europa or Io Capitano). One of the latest entries in this subgenre is the film Souleymane's Story, also known as L'histoire de Souleymane in French (or The Story of Souleymane). This premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and won two awards: Best Actor and a Jury Prize. It deserves both - the lead performance is exceptional and the storytelling in this is especially powerful. Watch: 'Bow To Your Wilderness' Mesmerizing Animated Music Video
"Give all the grace you got." Here's another experiential animated music video to enjoy. Cannes Book Giveaway Recap - Thank You for Another Amazing Year
"Fremaux knows his films, his festival, his audience. His taste is exceptional." (–Roger Ebert's notes from Cannes 2009.) At the start of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival two weeks ago, I announced a special giveaway of four signed copies of Matt Singer's book called Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever. Now that the festival has ended, it's time for a quick recap and a thank you to all those who crossed paths with me this year in Cannes. This 2024 giveaway was a follow-up to my 2019 giveaway, when I originally handed out 10 copies of Ebert's Cannes diary book called Two Weeks in the Midday Sun. This time the books were signed by the author, making them even more unique as a gift. Of course, I wanted to connect them to Roger Ebert again, and Matt's book is fantastic - recalling his history as a legendary film critic. All it took to win was finding me at a screening and saying the name of one film – The Brown Bunny. I had an amazing time chatting with my friends and colleagues in Cannes this year. New French Trailer for Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai' in 4K Re-Release
"Unmatched for suspense and spectacle!" The Jokers distribution in France have debuted a new trailer for the 4K re-release honoring the 70th Anniversary of this all-timer B&W action classic from Japan. Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai first opened in Japan in 1954 and also played at the 1954 Venice Film Festival. To celebrate this year's 70th anniversary, the 2024 Cannes Film Festival just hosted a special screening of this brand new 4K restoration. Hence why this new French trailer is out now. They add that Seven Samurai is "one of the most renowned films in the history of Japanese cinema. We decided to restore this film in 4K using the latest technology at TOHO Archives Co., Ltd. [for the] 70th anniversary of its initial theatrical release in Japan." The tranquility of a small Japanese village is disturbed by repeated attacks by a band of looters. Seven masterless samurai agree to defend the helpless peasants in this seminal classic. This stars ToshirĂŽ Mifune, Takashi Shimura, and Keiko Tsushima. The film is already available on Criterion Blu-ray and always replays in theaters, but a fresh 4K restoration is always majestic to witness. Have a look. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Brats' Documentary About the 80s Brat Pack Films
"I've never talked to anybody about what that was like." ABC News Studios has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Brats, arriving for streaming on Hulu this summer. In the 1980s, everybody wanted to be in the Brat Pack. Except them. This is the untold true story of the actual Brat Packers. Director Andrew McCarthy reunites with Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, and many others for this original documentary. Brats takes a look back at the iconic films of the 1980s that shaped a generation and the narrative that took hold when their young stars were branded the "Brat Pack." McCarthy reunites with his fellow Brat Packers — his friends, colleagues, and former foes many of whom he had not seen for over 30 years — to answer the question: What did it mean to be part of the "Brat Pack"? McCarthy also sits down for a first-time conversation with writer David Blum, who fatefully coined the term in his 1985 New York Magazine cover story. This sounds like a cool nostalgia trip! "Making Brats was that rare opportunity to dive back into the frozen past and bring it up into the living present," said McCarthy. This is worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

It's premiering soon at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival for animation in France this summer, in the Annecy Presents section. Cannes 2024: 'Eephus' - A Baseball Film Like You've Never Seen Before
Within the sports movies subgenre, there have been tons of baseball movies made over the decades. It is America's pastime, after all! There's even an entire book published this month about baseball movies and their legacy. So it would seem as if we've seen it all – every kind of baseball movie has been made before by someone at some point; even Richard Linklater made a modern classic a few years ago (called Everybody Wants Some) and we featured a video edit of the best movies. Lo and behold, we have another classic that has just come up to bat. Carson Lund's Eephus is a baseball movie we've never seen before. And it's genius. It's an "old dudes play ball" indie comedy and it's hilarious. I laughed my ass off watching this, it's more fun than actually going to a ball game, and there's plenty to analyze about what's happening beyond the who's on first and who has the best pitch. Another Cannes 2024 gem that I'm glad I took the time to sit down with. // Continue Reading ›

Funky Trailer for Julio Torres' Surreal New Comedy Series 'Fantasmas'
"I can feel the inner lives of shapes and colors and sounds and numbers..." Wow that's strange. Max has revealed an official trailer for a wacky comedy series called Fantasmas, streaming this June. It's the latest creation of comedian / writer / actor Julio Torres, who stars in, writes, directs this series after releasing his Problemista film with A24 last year. Torres explores the peculiar world of folktales with a "fresh and unique twist on the classic tale of the lost golden oyster." Ever since he was struck by lightning as a child, he has seen the world in a different light. After experiencing weird dreams, Julio decides to embark on a journey through a surreal, alternate version of New York City. The series stars Torres with Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos, & Joe Rumrill. Plus tons of guest stars: Steve Buscemi, Paul Dano, Julia Fox, Alexa Demie, Emma Stone, Aidy Bryant, Bowen Yang, Dylan O'Brien, and others. Cannes 2024: Mohammad Rasoulof's Film 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig'
One of the most anticipated films premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival is The Seed of the Sacred Fig, the latest from acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. His films have show regularly at festivals – Goodbye screened at Cannes 2011, Manuscripts Don't Burn at Cannes 2013, A Man of Integrity at Cannes 2017; his most recent 2020 film There Is No Evil won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. The Seed of the Sacred Fig is especially important and potent because it really upset the Iranian government – they sentenced Rasoulof to eight years in prison as well as flogging, a fine and confiscation of his property just because he made this film. Part of the big question is why – what does it show and why is the Iranian government so afraid of it? Now we know. This remarkable film is about the current events in Iran, mainly the silencing of many women and young protestors who rose up in 2022 by removing burkas in opposition to the government's heinous morality police. Not only does the film capture this moment quite powerfully, the filmmaking is also extraordinary, making this nearly three-hour-long film gripping from start to finish. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2024: Gilles Lellouche's 'Beating Hearts' is a Waste of Time
This is what it would look like if Michael Bay directed a romantic musical. Though this doesn't have nearly enough explosions or mind-boggling drone shots to really live up Bay's movies. Beating Hearts is a big, epic, flashy, cheesy, nearly-three-hour long French love story thriller made by a French filmmaker named Gilles Lellouche. He last directed an absurd comedy called Sink or Swim that played at Cannes 2018, and somehow he was able to secure a Main Competition slot this year at Cannes with his latest titled L'amour ouf in French (or just Beating Hearts in English). For some reason, before its premiere the movie was being referred to as a musical – but it's not really a musical. More of an epic, sweeping romance like Romeo + Juliet with two big dance sequences and tons of famous songs used in it. But there's no singing and it's not a classic musical, it's a drama about two lovers in France. The story is lifted from the classic The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, following young lovers who get split apart for 12 years then attempt to reconnect later on in life. // Continue Reading ›

Dennis Quaid is Ronald Reagan in New 'Reagan' Biopic Movie Trailer
"There's nothing a retired governor can do about the Soviets..." ShowBiz Direct has revealed a trailer for a movie called Reagan, a brand new biopic about the 40th President of the United States of America. This will open in theaters at the end of August this summer. Actor Dennis Quaid stars as Ron, who worked as an actor before getting into politics. "I've always been told bits and pieces of the stories of Ronald Reagan's life, but this movie puts the whole story together. I've played quite a few real people over the years, and I like to play them from their point of view, without judgment. It was a big challenge for me to get behind the public persona of the man and also to move beyond my own feelings of admiration for him." Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the film was shot in Oklahoma and in California at Reagan’s beloved Rancho Del Cielo and on Air Force One. The film follows Reagan from his humble beginnings to the glitz & glamour of Hollywood, and finally on to his biggest role as Commander in Chief. The cast includes Mena Suvari, Jon Voight, Penelope Ann Miller, Xander Berkeley, Amanda Righetti, C. Thomas Howell, Justin Chatwin, and Robert Davi. Final Trailer for 'The Garfield Movie' Starring the Voice of Chris Pratt
"Let it roll!!" Sony Pictures has debuted a final official trailer for the funny Garfield movie, which is playing in theaters today. They're really hoping this will be a hit with a final marketing push! The Garfield Movie is directed by Mark Dindal, the animation filmmaker also behind The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little. The amusing plot has Garfield reuniting with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat, then ending up involved in a high-stakes heist with him. Starring Chris Pratt as the voice of the sarcastic, lasagna-loving tabby, alongside the voices of Samuel L. Jackson as his father Vic, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Ving Rhames. This new trailer doesn't feature much footage - it's only a clip playing over and over of Garfield with Odie on a robot vacuum going back and forth. That's it. With the "Let It Roll" song made for the movie playing in the background. I get it, but this is such a bad trailer. Nothing funny about this. You've waited an eternity for this... Warner Bros has revealed the full official trailer for the legacy sequel titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (originally known as Beetlejuice 2), reuniting mastermind filmmaker Tim Burton with actor Michael Keaton for a long-awaited follow-up 36 (!!) years later. Who's ready for some creepy chaos again? The first Beetlejuice movie opened in 1988 (right before Burton's Batman in 1989) and ended up as a modest success and cult favorite. The sequel continues the story with the very same family. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. Michael Keaton returns as this miscreant Betelgeuse again, along with Winona Ryder back as Lydia, plus Jenna Ortega as Astrid, Catherine O'Hara, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, Arthur Conti, Burn Gorman, and Filipe Cates; plus Willem Dafoe as a ghost detective who, in his life, was a B movie action star. There's much more exciting footage in this trailer as the teaser didn't show much. Looks like we might have a really fun, creepy, bonkers sequel arriving later this year? Burton gone wild again! Juice it up. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2024: Sean Baker's Film 'Anora' is a One-of-a-Kind Sensation
It's always an especially exhilarating experience to stumble upon a film so completely unlike anything that has been made before that it leaves you on a cinematic high after walking out of the theater. At the midway point in the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, we finally get to experience the bliss of Anora, the latest film from American filmmaker Sean Baker. Anora is his eighth feature film so far, and he was already in Cannes in 2017 with The Florida Project (in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar) and again in 2021 with Red Rocket. This might just be hist best yet. France obviously loves him, but so does everyone else - this film has received the highest marks out of any in the Main Competition from all of the critics at this year's festival. The film's title is the name of the young woman who stars in the film, a young stripper from New York City named Anora who falls for a rich Russian kid after he pays her to hook up with him. On a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas they end up getting married (Vegas, baby Vegas!!) - but there's so much more going on in this film than just that. // Continue Reading ›

Full Official Trailer for Eddie Murphy's Sequel 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F'
"This isn't my first time in Beverly Hills..." Ready for a good time in Beverly Hills? Netflix has dropped the full official trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the long-awaited next new sequel in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise – which last ended decades ago in 1994 with Beverly Hills Cop III directed by John Landis. This smashing new follow-up (BHC4!) picks up right where things left off with Axel Foley as he returns to his old stomping grounds in SoCal for more mayhem. When his daughter is threatened, he is drawn back to the many opulent environs of Beverly Hills to investigate the untimely demise of a long-time confidant. She & Foley team up with a new partner to turn up the heat & uncover a conspiracy. Eddie Murphy is back as Foley for the fourth time, after first taking on the role in the 1984 comedy classic. The new cast also includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his new partner, Taylour Paige, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, Paul Reiser, and Kevin Bacon. This all-out comedy sequel is landing on Netflix starting on July 3rd this summer - in time for the July 4th holiday weekend. Doesn't look so bad! They don't even reveal anything about the bad guy - just that Axel is causing plenty of trouble all over Los Angeles again. Of course. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2024: Gints Zilbalodis' Animated Film 'Flow' Follows a Kitty
The story of a cat and his friends. Flow is an animated film made by the Latvian filmmaker named Gints Zilbalodis, his second feature after making Away (in 2019) which was a fable about loneliness. He's also known for many other animated short films that debuted online before he started moving into making these features. Whereas Away is about loneliness, Flow is about friendship, companionship, and loyalty. The title is once again a literal title because the story is about how we meet and befriend different people as life flows along, taking us to unknown destinations and through many trials & tribulations. Much like Away, the story is a metaphor for life as a human being, this time told through an adventure featuring different animals in a strange world. It's entirely dialogue free and features Zilbalodis' distinct cel-shading animation style, more rudimentary than Pixar or DreamWorks or Sony but still animated with heaps of emotion and compassion. // Continue Reading ›

Zachary Levi's 'Harold and the Purple Crayon' Kids Movie Trailer #2
"With this crayon nothing can stop me!" Except for Zachary Levi? Sony has revealed the second trailer for the Harold and the Purple Crayon movie, arriving in theaters in August this summer. Harold and the Purple Crayon is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic book series by Crockett Johnson that has captivated young readers for decades. "This summer, enter a world where anything you draw comes to life." Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book's pages and into the physical world, Harold discovers that he has a lot to learn about real life. Directed by Carlos Saldanha and produced by John Davis, the live-action hybrid family adventure-comedy stars Zachary Levi as Harold, Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, with Alfred Molina and Zooey Deschanel. This looks a bit too cheesy and ridiculous to actually work, but maybe kids will enjoy it? Or maybe not? What exactly is he going to draw with this crayon? From this footage, it reminds me of the Green Lantern movie flop from years ago. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer #2 for Crime Series 'Presumed Innocent' with Jake Gyllenhaal
"Your DNA was found at the scene." "They could put you away forever." Apple has unveiled a new trailer for the crime thriller series Presumed Innocent, streaming this June. This is about a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys' office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. The series is based on the acclaimed book of the same name written by Scott Turow. The description: "This story brings to life our worst nightmare: that of an ordinary citizen facing conviction for the most terrible of all crimes." The star-studded ensemble cast in here features Jake Gyllenhaal as Rusty Sabich, with Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Nana Mensah, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard, Kingston Rumi Southwick, as well as Elizabeth Marvel. More from the book: "It's the stunning portrayal of one man's all-too-human, all-consuming fatal attraction for a passionate woman who is not his wife, and the story of how his obsession puts everything he loves and values on trial--including his own life." This looks like a good series for people who love sneaky, intricate legal thrillers - especially with Reinsve & Gyllenhaal. // Continue Reading ›

Wonderful Featurette on Lee Jung-jae Starring in 'The Acolyte' Series
"You carry a Jedi weapon, but you are no Jedi." Disney+ has revealed a behind-the-scenes featurette for the Star Wars series called The Acolyte, which will start streaming in June. Showrun by Bachelorette and "Russian Doll" creator Leslye Headland. At the end of the High Republic era in a time of "shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers", approximately 100 years before The Phantom Menace. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes against Jedi, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated. This series stars Amandla Stenberg as Mae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Margarita Levieva, Dean-Charles Chapman, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jedi master Indara, and Joonas Suotamo as Wookiee Jedi master Kelnacca. This video focuses on talented Korean actor Lee Jung-jae as Jedi master Sol (who they all refer to as "JJ"). His appearance in this series as Sol is one of the main reasons I'm excited to watch this. I dig him and I'm glad they gave him a seriously legit role in the Star Wars universe. Learn more below. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2024: Laetitia Dosch's Swiss Doggie Comedy 'Dog on Trial'
Are dogs more than just "things" that someone owns? Should they be considered in the same way as human beings when it comes to law and courts? Can animals be tried in court on their own separate from their owner? These are the important questions at the heart of this delightful, eccentric, amusing Swiss comedy called Dog on Trial. Originally known as Le ProcĂšs du Chien in French (the film was also titled Who Let the Dog Bite? in English but then changed just before the festival) the film is premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the same section as the other amazing dog film this year - Black Dog (read my review). It's more of a mainstream, kooky, laugh-your-butt-off comedy than most films playing at Cannes, which is fine, because it's still a great time. And it's also a dog lover's movie, once again, though with a caveat as it's more emotional than some might be able to handle. It's the story of a good dog being put on trial in Switzerland. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Australian Rock Doc 'Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line'
"The normal thing for a band to do would to be to keep on toward the bright, shining lights – but instead we went completely in another direction." Roadshow Films has revealed an official trailer for an Australian rock documentary film titled Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line, about popular Aussie rock band called Midnight Oil. This will be premiering at the 2024 Sydney Film Festival in just a few weeks before it opens in theaters in Australia right after (though no US release set yet). "Contrary. Passionate. Outspoken." Over 45 years Midnight Oil has helped shape modern Australia. This is their trailblazing story for the first time on film. Paul Clarke's doc Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line is the definitive story of the seminal Australian rock group tracing their origins from the politically charged atmosphere of the 1970s to their rise as global icons. The group was originally formed in Sydney in 1972, and launched their first album in 1978, playing reunion tours in 2005 and 2009. Once again, it's so great to see a successful band take a strong stance on politics and go against what is expected to push for real change (and help make progress in Australia). Worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Martin Scorsese's New Chanel Ad Starring Timothée Chalamet
"So, when you're inside a role, do you destroy who you are?" "No, no – you reach into yourself... you find yourself. And only after that, are you free to be who you really are." There's another Martin Scorsese-directed advertisement to enjoy if you're into these kind of videos. Chanel just launched a new ad for their male perfume line called Bleu de Chanel, featuring celebrated actor TimothĂ©e Chalamet as the global ambassador. "The perfume of a man who chooses his way." These kind of promotions always seem so stale and strange - this works on people? The ad was shot by Scorsese and features Chalamet dealing with a late night talk show appearance, discussing his work as an actor and allowing himself to "be who you really are." Chanel adds that it's "an actor's conflict between celebrity and staying true to himself." It's only a 90 second video and goes by pretty fast, which is the norm for these kind of advertisements. And yes, it is a corporate commercial, but it's technically a new short film made by two masters of cinema so it's worth a look anyway. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron' Making Of Doc Film
"He's traveling between reality & fantasy, and losing the ability to tell them apart." Another magnificent doc about Hayao Miyazaki has just debuted. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is hosting a special series of events - starting out by giving filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli an Honorary Palme d'Or, along with screenings of a few special Ghibli short films and this never-before seen doc. Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron is a two-hour doc film version of the recent making of doc following animation master Miyazaki making his latest film The Boy and the Heron, which also won the Oscar earlier this year. Japan's NHK TV also aired a version of this doc called 2399 Days with Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli a few weeks ago. This special Cannes version is a "two-hour window into the heart of Hayao Miyazaki's creative process. The documentary follows six long years of work during the making of The Boy and the Heron." Rave reviews call it one of the most intimate & lovely looks at this legendary filmmaker yet, following up the other docs about him that have popped up over these last few years. Cannes 2024: Lorcan Finnegan's Sun-Drenched 'The Surfer' is Sharp
"Everybody's gone surfin'..." Except for you and you! One of the highlights within the 2024 Cannes Film Festival line-up is the Out of Competition presentation of The Surfer starring the legendary Nicolas Cage. It's the fourth feature film from Irish filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan, who also made his mark back at Cannes 2019 with the sci-fi flick Vivarium (here's my review of that one). He's back once again in Cannes with another entertaining contained, minimal (though maximal on the craziness), one-location story titled The Surfer, about a dude who starts a fight with the local surf bros who stop him from catching some waves on a secluded Australian beach. I had a fantastic time with this film! It's funny and absurd, but also clever and astute, commenting on way more than just the bro culture of surfers. In fact, I was intrigued to discover by the end that it's not actually about surfing culture or beaches, it's about capitalism and toxic masculinity. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2024: Jacques Audiard's Mexican Cartel Musical 'Emilia Perez'
One of the best things about being at film festivals is that most of the time you never know what is going to happen in the film you're about to watch. At Cannes, it's usually the first time the film is ever being shown to an audience. Walking into these films without any expectations or any idea what we're all in for can result in some of the most wildly exhilarating experiences when you encounter a truly ambitious, unexpected, one-of-a-kind creation. That's the case with Emilia Perez from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. I shouldn't be surprised, however, considering my love for Audiard's films goes back all the way to my very first visit to Cannes in 2009 - Un Prophet (A Prophet) is still one of my all-time favorite Cannes films. 15 years later and Audiard has totally blown me away again with Emilia Perez, a full-on Broadway-esque musical about Mexican society and a Mexican cartel kingpin who changes sex and reinvents herself. I did not think we'd see a more ambitious film than Megalopolis at Cannes 2024, but here we are with Emilia Perez. Incredible. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2024: George Miller's 'Furiosa' is Action Cinema at its Finest
"Ladies and Gentlemen! Start your engines!" Strap in, grab your chrome, and get ready for one of the best action movies of this decade! George Miller's action masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road is already known as one of the best action movies of the 2010s. I'm ecstatic to report that his follow-up prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is officially as good as Fury Road in every single way. Believe the hype!! Furiosa is almost TWO entire Fury Road's packed into one movie. Holy smoke it rules!! George Miller did it. He really went and did it and made another one of the best action movies ever made all over again. Maestro!! đ This isn't even a surprise. I'd have been much more surprised if it didn't live up to the hype and/or was not as good. The word from Down Under where they shot Furiosa is that even the crew was excited to be working on this movie, which Miller has been wanting to make for years even before he directed Fury Road. And it shows; it shows in every single shot, in every stunt, in every performance, in every aspect of this instant action classic. // Continue Reading ›

Fascinating Trailer for HBO's 'MoviePass, MovieCrash' Documentary
"All of this was part of a bigger story." HOB has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled MoviePass, MovieCrash, another of these "rise and fall" business stories, this one about something that really hits close to home. MoviePass was a movie lover's dream, offering access to movie theater tickets at a discounted monthly subscription rate when it launched in 2017. However, the co-founders, who had built the pop culture phenomenon from scratch, were cast aside and forced to watch from the sidelines as new executives seized control. Produced by Mark Wahlberg, the doc film follows the meteoric rise and stranger-than-fiction implosion of theatrical movie subscription service MoviePass, and how they crashed & burned (spoiler: it was greed and dumb executives, like pretty much every other corporate downfall story). This doc profiles all of "the key players who, in peddling a false narrative and seeking to fly too high, created a wild ride that ended with hundreds of millions of dollars in lost value and the early demise of the now infamous company." Yep, it was never going to last, it was destined for failure. Always destroyed by the biz schmucks. // Continue Reading ›
