Intriguing Teaser Trailer for Thai Time Warp Movie 'Taklee Genesis'

Taklee Genesis Trailer
"Why do they want me to be scared?" WB Thailand has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for an upcmoing sci-fi movie called Taklee Genesis, opening in Thailand next May. This is the first ever Thai movie from Warner Bros Thailand, an ambitious sci-fi time-hopping thriller. During the Vietnam War, the American military built a large research station at Camp Ramsun, rumored to be a site experimenting with supersonic travel. The plot involves a device that allows for time warping - spanning thousands of years as hinted at in this trailer with dinosaurs and more. "Taklee Genesis is a Thai film genre not undertaken on the big screen for a long time," WB says. Starring Paula Taylor, Peter Corp Dyrendal, War-Wanarat Rasamerat, Natcha Nina Jessica Padowan, Phutharit Phrombandan, Sai-Indira Charoenpura, Nuchanpa Soidara, and Nara Thepnupha. This looks pretty dang cool, I have to say - the teaser certainly got my attention. I'm curious to find out more. Watch: 'The Winterkeeper' Short Film About a Yellowstone Caretaker

The Winterkeeper Short Doc
"I enjoy being in tune, with this natural world. It's infinitely entertaining and deeply mysterious." This doc produced by The Guardian is a must watch for anyone who loves the outdoors. The Winterkeeper is a 12-minute short film directed by Laurence Topham & David Levene. The film profiles a man who lives and works on one of America's most extraordinary national parks. Steven Fuller is a winter caretaker who has lived at Yellowstone for the past 50 years - longer than anyone. "Fuller and Yellowstone face an uncertain future, with the climate crisis threatening to forever change one of North America’s last great wildernesses." I'm in awe with how calm and soothing his voice is. I could listen to him talk all day about nature. "The one thing we can be certain of is that the Yellowstone we know is not the Yellowstone that our children and grandchildren will know... It's going to be a very different place." Such a profoundly sad sentiment. We need to do more, and take better care of our beautiful planet. And yes, that means making changes to how we live. // Continue Reading ›

Looking Back: James Chapman's Illustrations of the Best Films of 2023

James Chapman's Best Films of 2023
"You've got to take back control of your home!" Another year has come to an end, which means it's time to look back at the best films released over the last 12 months. Artist James Chapman, based in Manchester, UK, has just published his Top 25 (!!) Films of 2023 list on Twitter - by drawing a cute little illustration for each & every favorite film. I've been an avid follower of Chapman for a few years already (we also posted his illustrations for 2022 as well) and I am a big fan of his artistic style. He draws and colors images in a little notepad and includes the pens & markers in the shot every time. I just think it's so delightful to always see these unique illustration for all of these films. They make me smile every time. Many of these are my faves, too (Oppenheimer and Past Lives are in my Top 10). He created 25 drawings in total, and I've included the Top 12 films below to peruse. Click back over to his full Twitter post to view his collection of all 25 images. // Continue Reading ›

Hyper Violent Trailer for 'I Did It My Way' - Hong Kong Crime Thriller

I Did It My Way Trailer
"The cops may be able to trace us." "So what." Well Go USA has debuted another new official trailer for a Hong Kong action thriller film called I Did It May Way. That title seems to be an obvious reference to Frank Sinatra's classic song "My Way", though it isn't heard in the trailer or mentioned anywhere else, but it seems to connect with the bad guy's plot anyway. The film revolves around an undercover officer who goes up against the high-tech drug underworld of Hong Kong. Ho Sau, an undercover agent, has been working with Yau, a drug lord, for years, but his job and family are in trouble. The intense action thriller stars Andy Lau, Gordon Lam, Cya Liu, Eddie Peng, Kent Cheng, Philip Keung, with a special guest appearance by Simon Yam. This is an extraordinary violent trailer for what looks like an insanely violent HK film - my goodness. More people die in this 2 minutes of footage than do in most action films... Just crazy! Watch out. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Babak Ganjei is a Freelance Artist in 'Freelancer' Comedy Short

Freelancer Comedy Short
"Free from the rat race. Free from the trappings of structure and stability, a mortgage, the respect of your parents. You chose this life, you chose freedom, you chose... you." Ahhh yes, the glory of being a freelancer. Or is it pain? Nowadays, a good bit of both, though leaning much more towards the latter. Freelancer is a hilarious 8-minute short film that debuted earlier in the year - worth a watch. It's directed by a filmmaking duo known as "Rosco 5" in London; written by and stars the 42-year-old British-Iranian actor / comedian Babak Ganjei - "who acts like a 25-year-old indie freelancer." He has to navigate single parenting, working under his own steam and the onset of middle age, and this is a guide to that "lifestyle." This is intended to be a pitch for a sitcom, but it also works perfectly as an under-10-minute short film that very precisely skewers the modern freelancer experience with a big helping of irony. "You've done the work, you have to get paid." // Continue Reading ›

Looking Ahead: 10 Movies Opening in 2024 That Will Blow You Away

10 Movies Opening in 2024 That Will Blow You Away
"Let me fight beside you." The calm before the storm... 2024 is just around the corner, the New Year ready to welcome us whether we like it or not. In celebration of New Years and the begining of 2024, we're taking a quick look ahead at some of our Most Anticipated Movies of 2024. Hollywood is in a tumultuous time, coming out of two big strikes in 2023 not to mention myriad other issues related to streaming & storytelling & beyond. So they don't confirm release dates as far in advance as they used to. The December 2024 line-up is remarkable sparse right now, and plenty of other movies initially set for release in 2024 are just going into production due to the strikes preventing them from filming. The 2024 Release Schedule is always subject to changes and updates, as usual, but for now - these 10 exciting movies below should still arrive in theaters sometime next year. Plenty more to come as Hollywood reveals their surprises waiting in the wings. I tend to focus on sci-fi, since it's my favorite genre, and 2024 has some sci-fi movies ready to rock theaters. // Continue Reading ›

Another Worthy '2023 in Cinema' Top 10 Favourites Countdown Video

2023 in Cinema Video
It's the end of 2023! Time to recap the year and drop your own Top 10 list, looking back through all of the films from this year. Here's another enjoyable countdown video to celebrate the year in cinema. UK-based movie lover Harvey John Perrie created a video of his "Top 10 Favourites" from 2023 in Cinema. This isn't the only 2023 recap video, with David Ehrlich's annual countdown due out in early January, as well as Sleepy Skunk's 2023 Movie Trailer Mashup (though not a countdown), Jed Wagman's 2023 Movie Mashup video, and Little White Lies' The 30 Best Films of 2023 video. It's always nice to see footage from all these movies while reviewing a Top 10 list, a reminder of how they look and feel. Watch: Short Ski Film 'Actual Air' About Growing Up Next to Mt. Baker

Actual Air Short Film
"I'm part of something... You're not bigger or better than anything around you." Ski & snowboard season has kicked off, which means it's time to start making some plans if you want to catch powder days this year. Filmmaker Mattias Evangelista went home to Glacier, Washington to make this short documentary film about his brother, skier Micah Evangelista. It is a very poetic, pensive 5-minute ski movie about growing up in the Pacific Northwest and living in the shadow of Mt. Baker (see Google Maps). There's a resort right there called the Mount Baker Ski Area, which is where they filmed most of this. All of the footage was shot on film with Kodak stock. It's super grainy and beautiful, adding to the laid back, vintage feel of this. Even if you're not a skier, I think there's plenty to appreciate here - living a simple life, focusing on joyful moments. // Continue Reading ›

"Gee, Pee-wee, do you think you asked for enough?" There's not many new updates at this time of the year (the grey zone between Christmas & New Years) but this is a fun video to feature. Actor / comedian Paul Reubens passed away earlier in 2023 at the age of 70. In remembrance of his work, the Pee-wee Herman YT channel uploaded a pristine, 4K quality copy of his iconic Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special that aired on CBS in 1988. Watch: 3D Animated Short Film 'ESC' About an Overworked Woman

ESC Short Film
"It's not that deep fam. Take this, it will help." Time for an escape – into the world of animation. ESC is an amusing 3-minute long, 3D animated short film created by the studio FOREAL. It's written and directed by London-based filmmaker Sam Southward, whose distinct shiny objects & rounded-corners style works well for this story of an overworked young woman who needs relief. The film was created for OFFF México (here), "an international festival that celebrates creativity & digital culture in the company of the brightest minds from Mexico and the world." The description for this ESC short says that she "realises that she must refocus on what’s important" while in the midst of her existential crisis. Watch: Nicholas Hoult Stars in Rolling Stones' 'Mess It Up' Music Video

Mess It Up Music Video
"You think I'll mess it up, mess it up, mess it up all for you; You think I'm really, really, really gonna really make your dreams come true..." There's a new music video out that is worth a watch. If you haven't heard already, The Rolling Stones have released a brand new album this year called "Hackney Diamonds" - the first album of original material by the Rolling Stones since 2005's "A Bigger Bang." The music video is for the track known as "Mess It Up" and it's directed by the talented filmmaker Calmatic, also known for directing the recent House Party and White Men Can't Jump remakes. It features actor Nicholas Hoult getting angry at his relationship and running out her, thinking she messed it up, only to dance around and realize that he messed it up. It's actually pretty cool - always nice to see a good narrative with some strong cinematography in a music video. Review: 'Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret' is a Pleasant Surprise

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret Review
Kelly Fremon Craig's coming-of-age comedy adaptation Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret had long been lodged in my film viewing schedule, yet somehow managed to elude me when it first opened (back in April 2023), ultimately succumbing to the abyss of missed watches. The noticeable awards season buzz surrounding Rachel McAdams' performance, coupled with a multitude of overwhelmingly positive opinions, compelled me to place it as a top priority viewing before the year's end. Gratitude is owed to everyone who shared wonderful feedback, for this turned out to be one of the most pleasantly surprising movies of 2023. // Continue Reading ›

Maddie Ziegler Stars in Canadian Sex Comedy 'Fitting In' Trailer #2

Fitting In Trailer #2
"You're still you. Ad I think you're pretty perfect just the way you are." Blue Fox Ent. has revealed another official US trailer for an indie coming-of-age comedy titled Fitting In, made by Canadian filmmaker Molly McGlynn (view the Canadian trailer here). This first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, and it also played at the TIFF, Calgary, and Vancouver Film Fests up in Canada this year. A teen girl is diagnosed with a reproductive condition that upends her plans to have a sex life, propelling her to explore unusual methods. Her relationships are also challenged with everyone in her life, but most importantly, herself. This is a semi-autobiographical feature that's also executive produced / presented by Janelle Monáe. McGlynn's Fitting In stars Maddie Ziegler as Lindy, with Emily Hampshire, Djouliet Amara, D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and Ki Griffin. This is a toned down version of the other trailer, because they can't put in the dialogue here about why the "fitting in" title is a perfectly clever title for this film. I hope US audiences still give it a look. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Extensive Music Doc Series 'Willie Nelson & Family'

Willie Nelson & Family Trailer
"Any song that Willie has written, he's lived it." Paramount+ has debuted their new biopic doc series called Willie Nelson & Family, available for streaming this week on their Paramount+ service. This originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year, playing in their new Series section. The first authorized work exploring the extraordinary life of Willie Nelson traverses the personal and career ups, downs, and in-betweens of one of the world's most beloved musicians, by turns spiritual, dramatic, and playful. Willie Nelson is now 90 years old and still going! This seems less of a "reality" series and more of a comprehensive look at his life and family, spanning four episodes and over four hours. "Award-winning filmmakers Thom Zimny & Oren Moverman fuse their own unique styles to construct an intimate, cinematic memoir of the Red Headed Stranger, traversing the highs, lows, and in-betweens of Willie’s personal life and professional career." Sounds good! This is a really stellar trailer, makes me want to watch. Check it out. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: A Holiday Movie Mashup from The Academy - Happy Holidays

A Holiday Movie Mashup from The Academy
"I can't tell you how good it is... to have all of under the same roof again." Someone over at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) really loves mashups. This video plays like one of their montages during the Academy Awards show every year, but this one won't be airing during the broadcast in March. The Academy debuted a short "Happy Holidays from The Academy" mashup video on their YouTube featuring a medley of holiday classics. Aside from all the regulars, they've also got some oddball ones like Christmas with the Kranks, Jingle All the Way, Krampus, and The War With Grandpa. Plus classics like White Christmas, The Apartment, Meet Me in St Louis, and It's a Wonderful Life. It's just a nice celebration of the magic of the movies and how they are connected with the holiday spirit and holiday season. Christmas is just around the corner! Watch: Entrancing Animated Short '[O]' Set in a World Based on Sound

[O] Animated Short Film
This strange, one-of-a-kind animated short film has finally made its way online after originally premiering over 6 years ago. [O] is an animated made by filmmakers Mario Radev and Chiara Sgatti - both based in London. It debuted in 2017 at Raindance and other fests, played in 2018 at the Sundance and Annecy Film Festivals, with many other stops. Originally an animation school graduation film for both Mario and Chiara. "This film imitates the functioning of nature. Life cycles are represented in a world entirely based on sound frequency and vibration." Perhaps a few of you already caught this at a festival, if not, you are in for a treat. I'd put this high on a list of "I've never seen anything like it" visuals. The 6-minute short is a 2D animated film with some of the kookiest, freaky creatures & characters - reminds me of other horror shorts Something in the Garden and Playground. The sound design is as important as the visuals in this, with some eerie and disturbing sounds that you will never forget. It's hard to describe it any further - view the short in full below. // Continue Reading ›

Paint & Clones & Dr Jones - Our 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2023

Best Movie Posters of 2023
With the year almost over, it's time to look back and highlight some favorites from the world of movies. Our writer Ethan Anderton used to publish his picks for the Best Official Movie Posters for years, but I've taken over and have curated a selection of my own top picks in poster design. Below is my personal selection of 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2023. These aren't necessarily the "best" rather they're my own favorites that stuck with me. The qualification is that they must be official posters released by the distributor, not fan art or other posters created unofficially. This year I found quite a few of the more minimalistic designs really stuck with me - which was the opposite of last year. I'm a sucker for strong visuals always enjoy watching for new poster drops all year, hoping for some real winners. These 10 posters stuck with me as compelling, eye-catching, creative designs that really make me want to watch every one of the films. Check them out below. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Scary 3-Minute Horror Short 'The Drawing' Made by Jay Salahi

The Drawing Short Film
"Careful what you draw." Another chilling new horror short under 5 minutes has launched online, proving that you can pull off some good scares in just a few minutes. The Drawing is the latest horror short made by filmmaker Jay Salahi - who also released the feature film Northwood Pie last year and the hilariously awesome microwave horror short called Ding... You're Dead earlier this year (it's also worth a watch). The Drawing short has been playing at festivals all year, ending up with the Audience Award at HorrorHaus and winning 1st Place at the Spooky Film Festival. An artist is haunted by a figure from her drawing - starring Annika Foster & Destiny Mounce. Salahi says he was flexing his muscles as a filmmaker trying to make a short "driven mostly by visuals, practicing suspense and tension, not re-using any angles and packing as many little organic horror beats as possible in under 3 minutes." Yeah it's freaky good - view the film below. // Continue Reading ›

Liam Hemsworth & Russell Crowe in Action Movie 'Land of Bad' Trailer

Land of Bad Trailer
"I am your eyes in the sky, and the bringer of doom." The Avenue has revealed their official trailer for a jingoistic action thriller called Land of Bad, which is a pretty catchy title for this one. It's set to open in theaters in February - the latest film made by talented filmmaker Will Eubank, of The Signal, Underwater, and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. "When sh*t goes down in the jungle, there's one team for the job." When a Delta Force team is ambushed in enemy territory, a rookie officer played by the other brother Liam Hemsworth refuses to abandon them. Their only hope lies with an Air Force drone pilot as the eyes in the sky during a brutal 48-hour battle for survival in the jungle. Russell Crowe co-stars as the drone pilot, with Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, Milo Ventimiglia, Daniel MacPherson, Gunner Wright, and Lincoln Lewis. This doesn't look that bad, better than most action films being churned out these days, though it is a bit strange to see them go full pro-drone. Whatever it takes to bring our boys back safe! Official Trailer for Rose Glass' 'Love Lies Bleeding' with Kristen Stewart

Love Lies Bleeding Trailer
"Don't ever fall in love, okay?" A24 has revealed the first official trailer for Love Lies Bleeding, the highly anticipated second feature film from director Rose Glass - who made her mark on the horror scene with the 2019 hit Saint Maud. This one is premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival coming up in January in the fest's iconic Midnight section (more info here). Reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dreams. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou's criminal family. The film stars Kristen Stewart as Lou, Katy O'Brian as Jackie, with Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris. This looks like a gritty, mess, violent crime thriller with some good twists and turns. It's a bit familiar, we've seen this story before in many other films. Watch: Big Batch of 'Oppenheimer' Awards Season Making Of Videos

Oppenheimer Featurettes
"They won't fear it until they understand it." With the awards season in full swing now, Universal Pictures is putting all of their weight behind one of 2023's top contenders: Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. It might just go all the way and win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and a bunch of other Oscars. As part of their awards season promo, they've released a series of 2-minute behind-the-scenes featurettes for all of the various categories: costumes, cinematography, production design, directing, score, editing, hair & make-up, VFX, and every other technical aspect. All 10 of the main videos are available to watch below. I am also completely with Oppenheimer, it's on my Top 10 of 2023 (list here), and I'm happy to give it as much support as I can in hopes that it'll rightfully win some awards. I also suggest reading this excellent article by A.A. Dowd called "Oppenheimer was the movie of 2023" for even more context to why it's Oppie's year. If there's one category I believe it must win – I truly believe Ludwig Göransson's is one of the best movie scores of all-time. Yes, seriously. There's also a video about his work on this film – the last video in this list. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Stop-Motion Holiday Short 'Fuzzy Feelings' About Creativity

Fuzzy Feelings Short Film
"You make the holidays." Always take a moment to bring some happiness to any who might need it. Enjoy this wonderful holiday short film called Fuzzy Feelings, made as a promotion for Apple by an agency and animation studio. It's actually quite heartfelt and wholesome, not obnoxious or heavy-handed at all. Fuzzy Feelings is a short film made by director Lucia Aniello for Apple's ad agency TBWA\Media Arts Lab. It's set in London and follows a woman who is creating her own stop-motion animated short film (on an iPhone and Macbook, of course) in her spare time while dealing with a grumpy boss at work. "Sometimes, seeing things through a new lens can make all the difference." Set to the song "Isn't It a Pity” by George Harrison. I was really taken by this short, it's so humble and charming and doesn't even feature any dialogue either. The stop-motion side is animated by the studio Passion Pictures. Worth a watch - it's not even 4 minutes long. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer for German On-The-Run Film 'Sixty Minutes' w/ Emilio Sakraya

Sixty Minutes Trailer
"This is bigger than you think." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a German race-against-the-clock thriller called Sixty Minutes (oder 60 Minuten auf Deutsch), arriving in January for streaming on Netflix. 60 Minutes is an action-packed race against time. Leading actor and multi-talent Emilio Sakraya lets his fists fly as mixed martial arts fighter Octavio. MMA fighter Octavio has one hour to make it to his daughter's birthday party across Berlin or he'll lose custody forever. To reach her in time he turns down an important fight, which puts him in a dangerous position with some even more dangerous people. Of course. Suddenly Octavio isn't only trapped in a ruthless race against time but also a chase through the entire city that pushes him to his limits. Also starring Dennis Mojen, Marie Mouroum, Paul Wollin, Aristo Luis, Morik Heydo, and Florian Schmidtke. This reminds me a lot of the Berlin classic Run Lola Run, a modern "but what if a MMA guy instead" Netflix remix. Unfortunately it looks bad, cheesier than it should be - watch out. // Continue Reading ›

Official UK Trailer for Acclaimed Meditative Film 'Samsara' Set in Laos

Samsara Film Trailer
"The world opens to those who open up to it." Curzon in the UK has unveiled a trailer for an acclaimed film called Samsara, described as a "highly immersive and meditative film by artist and director Lois Patiño." Not to be confused with Ron Fricke's meditative globe-spanning documentary also called Samsara (2012). The term "saṃsāra" is actually a Pali/Sanskrit word that means "wandering" as well as "world," wherein the term connotes "cyclic change" or, less formally, "running around in circles." In the temples of Laos, teenage monks accompany a soul in transit from one body to another through the bardo. A luminous and sonorous journey leads to reincarnate on the beaches of Zanzibar, where groups of women work in seaweed farms. Berlinale adds: "In this conversation held on the border between life, death & meditation, Patiño continues his exploration of the image as an immersive experience. [As with films] by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation coincides with the experience of watching. The act of seeing and of telling stories becomes a unique visionary experience that literally leads the viewer into another dimension." // Continue Reading ›
