Gnarly Red Band Trailer for 'America: The Motion Picture' on Netflix

America: The Motion Picture Trailer

"Ding dong, it's America M-Fer!" Netflix has released one more trailer for the animated comedy America: The Motion Picture, a final red band trailer packed with profanity and violence galore. Which is befitting America's sordid history. Debuting on Netflix today - just in time for the 4th of July weekend. In this wildly tongue-in-cheek animated revisionist history, a chainsaw-wielding George Washington assembles a team of rabble rousers — beer-loving bro Sam Adams, famed scientist Thomas Edison, acclaimed horseman Paul Revere, and a pissed off Geronimo — to defeat Benedict Arnold and King James in the American Revolution. This animated movie stars "America's sweethearts" — Channing Tatum (as G.W.), Jason Mantzoukas, Olivia Munn, Judy Greer, Bobby Moynihan (as Paul), Raoul Max Trujillo (as Geronimo), Killer Mike, Andy Samberg, Will Forte, and Simon Pegg (as King James). This is very similar to the original trailer, just with some added "red band" material. It may be extra dumb, but definitely looks like good fun. ›››

'New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization' Doc with Bill Murray Trailer

New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization Trailer

"Whoever you are… come travel with me!" Time to rock the Acropolis! An official promo trailer has debuted for a fascinating film titled New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization, which is premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival kicking off next week. It's a filmed presentation of one remarkable performance. On a glorious Greek evening, screen legend Bill Murray and world-renowned cellist Jan Vogler perform the Acropolis with a timeless mix of music and poetry. Captured on film by director Andrew Muscato, Murray & Vogler are joined by the dazzling Mira Wang (on violin) and dynamic Vanessa Perez (on piano). Spanning from Bach to Van Morrison, Whitman to West Side Story, the wildly entertaining, humorous and deeply touching show is infused with the one-of-a-kind charm of Bill Murray. This sounds and looks great! I wish I could've been there for the actual performance, but I'm glad they captured this on film so we can all enjoy it. ›››

First Trailer for Ildikó Enyedi's 'Story of My Wife' Premiering in Cannes

The Story of My Wife Trailer

"You want me to like your admirer?" Films Boutique has unveiled a festival promo trailer for The Story of My Wife, the first English-language feature from acclaimed, award-winning Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi. She won the Golden Bear top prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017 for her last film On Body and Soul. The Story of My Wife, adapted from Hungarian author Milán Füst's novel, is set to premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition, and it runs a full 2 hours, 49 minutes. Whew. There's not of a description. Only an introduction: the film follows a Dutch sea captain who makes a bet in a café to wed the first woman who enters through the door. In walks Lizzy, played by Léa Seydoux. The cast also includes Gijs Naber and the ubiquitous Louis Garrel. This is the best of any Cannes trailer we've posted before the festival so far - easily one of my most anticipated this year. It looks ravishing; many elegant shots. ›››

Jena Malone & Pablo Schreiber in Second Chances Film 'Lorelei' Trailer

Lorelei Trailer

"They're not your kids!! … But they should've been." Vertical Entertainment has revealed the official trailer for an indie drama titled Lorelei, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sabrina Doyle. The film originally premiered at the Deauville American Film Festival last year, and it also played at this year's Portland, Miami, Cleveland, and Tribeca Film Festivals. After 15 years in prison, Wayland reunites with his high school girlfriend, Dolores, who is now a single mother of three kids - each one is named after different shades of blue. What follows is a lyrical take on love, regret and second chances. The emotional, passionate film stars Jena Malone and Pablo Schreiber as Dolores and Wayland, along with Amelia Borgerding, Chancellor Perry, and Parker Pascoe-Sheppard. This looks really wonderful, a film that allows people to be multi-dimensional, to have good and bad sides, yet still receive love. And that means a lot these days. ›››

Two New Character Trailers for 'Jungle Cruise' with Blunt & Johnson

Jungle Cruise Trailer

"Why should I pay more dead?" Disney has dropped off two more amusing trailers for the Jungle Cruise movie, one for each of the main characters: Dwayne Johnson stars as the riverboat captain Frank Wolff, and also Emily Blunt as an explorer named Lily Houghton. This "adventure-filled, Amazon-jungle" voyage from director Jaume Collet-Serra (of Unknown, Non-Stop, The Shallows, The Commuter) opens in theaters AND on Disney+ on the same day in July. Lily travels from London to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank's questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is very determined to find an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities. The cast includes Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, Veronica Falcón, Andy Nyman, and Paul Giamatti. These are two fun trailers, getting us into the vibe and the mood of this rollicking Pirates of the Caribbean-esque journey into the jungle. It's also nice to see some creative marketing, as Disney seems quite excited about this movie. ›››

Stephen Lang is Back in First Trailer for 'Don't Breathe 2' Horror Sequel

Don't Breathe 2 Trailer

"It's not me you need to be scared of, little girl." Sony Pictures / Screen Gems has debuted the first official trailer for horror sequel Don't Breathe 2, following up the surprise hit horror Don't Breathe from 2016. This is yet another movie delayed from release last year, now set to open in theaters nationwide starting in August this summer. This one is set in the years following the initial deadly home invasion, where Norman Nordstrom lives in quiet solace until his past sins catch up to him. Stephen Lang returns as Nordstrom, with a cast including Brendan Sexton III, Madelyn Grace, Bobby Schofield, Rocci Williams, Steffan Rhodri, and Stephanie Arcila. This looks like it might just be an improvement over the original, getting even more brutal but sticking to the concept. And as always, Lang looks badass taking on everyone himself. ›››

Oscar Cardenas in First Trailer for Psychological Thriller 'A Dark Foe'

A Dark Foe Trailer

"I won't give up… until I find her!" Vertical has released an official trailer for an indie noir thriller titled A Dark Foe, which is dropping on VOD at the end of July. The film is the first feature made by Venezuelan filmmaker Maria Gabriela Cardenas, directing her father Oscar Cardenas in the film. As a devoted fan of the film noir and thriller genres, Maria, along with her father established a film production company, Path of Thorns Entertainment, Inc., exclusively dedicated to producing horror and thriller movies. After coming up with the concept in September 2015, they began the journey of bringing A Dark Foe to life, and it's been a passion project for this father/daughter duo ever since. A guilt-ridden FBI agent, stranded in the painful memory of the abduction of his sister, will have to face-off with the cunning serial killer who took her away. The film stars Oscar Cardenas, with Selma Blair, Graham Greene, Kenzie Dalton, and Bill Bellamy. This doesn't look like it's going to be worth a watch - with all the usual "trouble FBI agent" tropes. ›››

Kate Beckinsale Needs a Shock in Action Comedy 'Jolt' Official Trailer

Jolt Trailer

"What is it about gross old men always underestimating women?" Amazon has unveiled an official trailer for an energetic action comedy called Jolt, the latest from filmmaker Tanya Wexler (Hysteria, Buffaloed). This is dropping on Prime Video in July right in the middle of the summer, and looks like a wild ride. Jolt is apparently a bit of a female-twist on Crank, with Kate Beckinsale in the lead role as a bouncer. She stars as Lindy, a woman with a slightly-murderous anger-management problem that she controls with the help of an electrode-lined vest she uses to shock herself back to normalcy whenever she gets homicidal. After the first guy she's ever fallen for is murdered, she goes on a revenge-fueled rampage to find the killer while the cops pursue her as their suspect. The excellent cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Jai Courtney, Laverne Cox, David Bradley, Ori Pfeffer, with Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci. Unsurprisingly, this looks totally incredible! Almost full on Die Hard action and Beckinsale giving a F-it-all performance. Bring it on. ›››

Watch: Witty Animated Short Film 'Bird Karma' from William Salazar

Bird Karma Short Film

This is a short film you don't want to miss! Bird Karma is an animated short made in the traditional hand-drawn way, without any 3D CGI or rendering. The film is written and directed by veteran animator William Salazar, who has worked for many years for Disney and DreamWorks Animation as a supervising animator on many of their films (from The Prince of Egypt to Kung Fu Panda). Bird Karma was eventually made by DreamWorks Animation in their shorts program, and it originally debuted in 2018, but hasn't really been given a chance to shine. Mostly because it's a very dark short film about a greedy bird who learns his lesson the hard way. The official synopsis for Bird Karma sums it up nicely: A tale of a long-legged bird's journey of blissful joy, inescapable greed and the accidental discovery of the consequences when too much is not enough. Of course, the animation in this is stunning. And it's a quick 4-minute watch - give it a whirl below. ›››

The Story of the Largest Demo in History - 'We Are Many' US Trailer

We Are Many Trailer

"Something began on that day that cannot be reversed." Area 23a + Iambic Dream Films have released the official US trailer for an indie documentary film titled We Are Many, made by Iranian filmmaker Amir Amirani. This originally premiered way back in 2014 at the Sheffield DocFest, and while it did open in the UK, it has never been released in the US. Perhaps because it talks about a big movement and demonstration against the war in Iraq, which has always been a very sore subject for America. The doc film tells the never-before-told story of the biggest demonstration in human history, which took place on February 15, 2003, against the impending war on Iraq. Up to 30 million people, many of whom had never demonstrated before, came out in nearly 800 cities around the world to protest. The film features interviews with Noam Chomsky, Ron Kovic, Medea Benjamin, Bill Fletcher Jr., Mark Rylance, John le Carré, Dr. Hans Blix, Lindsey German, Jesse Jackson, Danny Glover, Ken Loach, and others. A poignant story about the terrific power of marches. ›››

Toro! New US Trailer for Quentin Dupieux's Giant Fly Film 'Mandibules'

Mandibules Trailer

"The world is out of whack." Magnolia Pictures has released an official US trailer for the absurdist comedy Mandibules, the latest from wacky French musician / filmmaker Quentin Dupieux. This also goes under the English title Mandibles, but I prefer the original French spelling more. This originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year to mostly rave reviews (here's mine) and it deserves to be the sleeper hit of the summer in the US this year. Two simple-minded friends discover a giant fly in the trunk of a car and decide to domesticate it to earn money with it. But it's about much more than just that. Definitely a kooky Dupieux concept and it's hilarious. One of my favorite films he's made so far. Starring Adèle Exarchopoulos, Grégoire Ludig, Bruno Lochet, Coralie Russier, India Hair, David Marsais, with Dave Chapman as "La Mouche" (aka The Fly). It's best to see the film without knowing much about it - kick back and enjoy. ›››

The Many Saints of Newark Trailer

"Growing up with the family… takes a toll." Warner Bros / HBO Max has unveiled the first official trailer for The Many Saints of Newark, the highly-anticipated feature film prequel to David Chase’s award-winning HBO drama series "The Sopranos." This was one of many movies originally set to open last year, but was delayed due to the pandemic – now it's arriving in theaters starting this October, at the beginning of the fall movie season. "Legends aren't born. They're made." A look at the formative years of New Jersey gangster, Tony Soprano, growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark's history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. The movie stars Alessandro Nivola, Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Michael Gandolfini, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, with Emmy winner Ray Liotta and Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga. First UK Trailer for Acclaimed Irish Drama 'Wildfire' About Two Sisters

Wildfire Trailer

"A blazing portrait of women on fire." Modern Films in the UK has released the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Wildfire, which originally premiered at both the Toronto and London Film Festivals last year. It's opening in the UK + Ireland in September, though has no US date set yet. The story of two sisters who grew up on the fractious Irish border. When one of them, who has been missing, finally returns home, the intense bond with her sister is re-ignited. Together they will unearth the truth about their mother's past, but uncovered secrets and resentments which have been buried deep, threaten to overwhelm them. Wildfire stars Nika McGuigan and Nora-Jane Noone as the sisters. LWL states: "Brady represents an intriguing, promising new voice in the Irish cinema as it continues to grow on the world stage, [she's] an instant one-to-watch." This looks like it gets intense, but it still maintains its authenticity telling a distinctly Irish story. ›››

Full Trailer for 'Blood Red Sky' Vampire Woman on an Airplane Film

Blood Red Sky Trailer

"Evil is within you. You can't control it." Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer for the German horror thriller Blood Red Sky, which is pretty much Vampire(s) on a Plane (instead of Snakes). A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight. To protect her son she will have to reveal her dark secret, and unleash the inner vampire monster she has fought to hide. The big twist is that she is the "good guy", sort of, not the big bad vampire - it's hijackers versus her. Which is seriously a killer concept. Starring Peri Baumeister as Nadja, joined by Kais Setti, Alexander Scheer, Dominic Purcell, Graham McTavish, Roland Møller, Chidi Ajufo. This looks like wicked cool vampire entertainment, but not sure it's going to be that memorable by the end. ›››

Fun First Trailer for Kooky Live-Action 'Clifford the Big Red Dog' Movie

Clifford the Big Red Dog Trailer

"Heroes don't get bigger than this!" Paramount Pictures has released an official trailer for their live-action Clifford the Big Red Dog movie, adapted from the classic Scholastic book series by Norman Bridwell. Technically this is a "hybrid" movie because Clifford is actually entirely CGI, though they did use a creepy maquette thing on set during filming. A girl's love for a tiny puppy named Clifford makes the dog grow to an enormous size. Emily and her fun but impulsive uncle Casey set out on an adventure that will keep you on the edge-of-your-seat as our heroes take a bite out of the Big Apple. Clifford the Big Red Dog stars Darby Camp, Jack Whitehall, Tony Hale, Sienna Guillory, David Alan Grier, Russell Wong and John Cleese as Mr. Bridwell. Thankfully this doesn't look as bad as it could, but it also doesn't look that great. There's not much of a story other than "hey it's a big dog!" Which is kinda fun, but it needs more than that. ›››

Berlinale 2021: A Film Festival Held Outside is Just What We Needed

Berlinale 2021

Is there a safe way to still host in-person screenings at a film festival in the middle of a pandemic? That's the question that has been on the mind of every last film festival all over the world. But there is one solution – hosting outdoor "open air" screenings with social distanced seating (or drive-in screenings in places where most people have cars). The Berlin Film Festival usually takes place in February every year, but this year they had to cancel their main event, as the third wave of the COVID-19 was taking over the city at the time. However, the festival eventually came up with an interesting plan: allow the press and industry access to a simple digital screening system in February to watch most of the line-up. Then follow-up in June during the summer with outdoor screenings of ALL of the films for the public. This worked like a charm. I caught two films during the Berlinale-in-summer series and found myself wondering why I didn't get even more tickets. ›››

Twice As Good Short Film

"You don't get it because you're the best at everything. Not in a bad way, but…" This film Twice As Good is a terrific short made by Kristian King, presented in the "Scene in Color Film Series" this summer, highlighting "up-and-coming filmmaking talent." It's College Decision Day. Ann, a Black high school senior and valedictorian, has finally taken her future into her hands, but she's been keeping it a secret. Now, out of time, Ann must find the courage to reveal her truth at the risk of failing everyone’s high expectations and disappointing the person she loves most. Sojourner Brown stars as Ann, with Dawn L Troupe, Janice Dias, Erinn Holmes, Noah Mogaka, and Joan Shangold. First Trailer for Indie Werewolf Thriller 'The Hunting' Filmed in Ohio

The Hunting Trailer

"It's obvious this animal didn't kill for food…" It must've killed out of spite! Black Mandala Productions has unveiled an early promo trailer for another new werewolf film titled The Hunting, marking the feature narrative directorial debut of filmmaker Mark Andrew Hamer (executive producer for I See You). The basic logline for this sounds like every other werewolf film but that's not surprising: When a mysterious animal attack leaves a mutilated body in the forest, a conservative small town detective must enlist the help of an eager wildlife specialist to uncover the dark & disturbing truth that threatens the town. Most of the footage in this trailer is filled with all the usual werewolf tropes including wolves, but it finally breaks form at the end. The film stars Peyton Hillis, Joelle Westwood, Joaquin Guerrero, Keith Migra, Angela Cole, and Alan Tuskes. This was shot mostly in Ohio and Michigan. I just wish it looked better than it does here. ›››

Official Trailer for Mysterious Bank Heist Thriller 'No Loss // No Gain'

No Loss // No Gain Trailer

"Not all banks can be trusted. Not all heists are created equal." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a mysterious low-budget heist thriller titled No Loss // No Gain, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Christian Rousseau. There isn't much of an intro to this film, and the official synopsis is extremely short: a mysterious modern-day Robin Hood gives the victims of a bank robbery a million dollar opportunity. Apparently it's about a bank heist, but of course the robber's "tactics and motives are veiled by complexity," involving a bunch of people who are struggling financially. This stars John Valley, Amanda Joy Erickson, Kevin McCarthy, Nathan Ehrmann, Destiny Soria, Ru Benjamin Revolver, and Alexandria Payne. It looks like this is trying to be a modern day Inside Man, with a Robin Hood spin, but I'm not sure they've pulled that off. A bit too melodramatic and lacks any real tension, at least in this trailer. ›››

'Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters' Doc Trailer

Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones & D-Man in the Waters

"How do we save ourselves?" Kino Lorber has revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters, by filmmakers Rosalynde LeBlanc and Tom Hurwitz. The doc film brings to life the creative process that culminated in choreographer / dancer / director Bill T. Jones' tour de force ballet D-Man in the Waters, one of the most important works of art to come out of the AIDS crisis. In 1989, D-Man in the Waters gave physical manifestation to the fear, anger, grief, and hope for salvation the emerging Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company felt as they were embattled by the AIDS epidemic. Through an extraordinary collage of interviews, archival material, & uniquely powerful cinematography, this lyrical documentary uses the story of this iconic dance to illustrate the power of art and the triumph of the human spirit. This originally premiered at DOC NYC last year, and also played at this year's Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festival. Reviews say the film "touches the heart and stimulates the mind," that "it's a work of such great feeling, poetic beauty, and relevance in the times through which we are living." ›››

We Are Doomed! Solo Trailer for Netflix's 'Fear Street Part One: 1994'

Fear Street Part One: 1994

"The dude was wearing a Halloween skull mask – how is that not fun?!" Netflix has released the first solo trailer for their upcoming, highly anticipated Fear Street horror trilogy adapted from the R.L. Stine books of the same name. This trailer is specifically for the first movie only, titled Fear Street Part One: 1994, introducing us to the opening story in "modern" times (even though it's set in 1994, at least compared to the other two movies). The trilogy begins in Shadyside, 1994. In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. Based on R.L. Stine’s best selling horror series, the trilogy follows the nightmare through Shadyside's sinister history. The films' ensemble casts include Gillian Jacobs, Fred Hechinger, Olivia Welch, Sadie Sink, Ashley Zukerman, Charlene Amoia, Kiana Madeira, Emily Brobst, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Benjamin Flores Jr., Emily Rudd, Julia Rehwald, and Matthew Zuk. The trilogy of horror flicks will debut back-to-back for three weeks this July. I'm loving the slow burn marketing for this, building us up for this epic horror event of the summer. Nice choice on the Rob Zombie track in this trailer. ›››

Second Teaser Trailer for Epic Sci-Fi Isaac Asimov Series 'Foundation'

Foundation Sci-Fi Series

"You can't save yourselves… but you can save your legacy." Bring on more epic sci-fi!! Apple has revealed the second teaser trailer for their grand new sci-fi series Foundation, based on the seminal book series of the same name from Isaac Asimov. As we already know, Hollywood has been trying to adapt these books for decades, now we're finally going to see how David Goyer brings this futuristic story to life on screen. Foundation chronicles "the thousand year saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it." Based around a mathematician who can predict the future, but they don't like the future he sees is coming. "Enraged by Hari's claims, the ruling Cleons – a long line of emperor clones – fear their grasp on the galaxy may be weakening as they’re forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their legacy forever." Apple's Foundation stars Jared Harris as the mathematician Hari Seldon; with Lee Pace as Brother Day; Lou Llobell as Gaal; Leah Harvey as Salvor; Laura Birn as Demerzel; Terrence Mann as Brother Dusk; Cassian Bilton as Brother Dawn. This looks like it definitely has the intergalactic scale, I just hope the scope of the story lives up to the books. ›››

Promo Trailer for Refugee Survival Film 'Europa' Premering in Cannes

Europa Trailer

"This is their story." ScreenDaily has released an early festival promo trailer for a film premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Director' Fortnight sidebar section. This Iraq-Italy-Kuwait co-production is a film about an Iraqi refugee chased through the wilderness by "migrant hunters" on a border in Europe. Adam Ali stars as Kamal, a migrant trying to get to Europe. At the border between Turkey and Bulgaria, local mercenaries are ruthlessly hunting down migrants. Alone in the forest, Kamal has three days to escape. The cast includes Svetlana Yantcheva, Pietro Ciciriello, Gassid Mohammed, Mohamed Zouaoui, and Erfan Rashid. My first impression is that this looks like that jaw-dropping Holocaust film Son of Saul, but for refugees trying to make it safely into Europe. I definitely need to watch this - it looks intense as hell. ›››

"We're smart, we found our way out of Ikea. We'll find our way out of here." Apple has released an official trailer for Schmigadoon!, a wacky fun musical comedy series debuting this July on the streaming service. In this parody of 1940s musicals, backpacking couple Melissa and Josh get trapped in "Schmigadoon", a magical town filled with singing and dancing townspeople, and learn they can’t leave without finding true love—which they thought they already had. This is a clever concept, and it's going to be so amusing to see them play with this as a series! All of the episodes are directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, only adding to the potential for this to be incredible. Schmigadoon! stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as the couple Melissa & Josh, who come across the wonderfully talented Fred Armisen, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ariana DeBose, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, and Aaron Tveit. Official Trailer for 'The One and Only Dick Gregory' Showtime Doc

The One and Only Dick Gregory Trailer

"His stage presence was so smooth." Showtime has debuted an official trailer for the documentary film The One and Only Dick Gregory, a profile of the American comedian and activist Dick Gregory. The film just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, and is playing at AFI Docs before it starts streaming on Showtime this Independence Day - July 4th. From Tribeca: "Dick Gregory was an icon for Black America. A comedian who used his considerable public platform for activism during the civil rights movement of the 60s, he was the rare entertainer who felt almost as at home on the couch of The Tonight Show as he did on the front lines of the fight for racial equity and justice. [With] stunning archival footage and contemporary interviews, Andre Gaines' brilliant debut feature takes a close look at Gregory’s legacy, documenting his many personal reinventions throughout the decades, while hearing from the countless entertainers (Dave Chappelle & Chris Rock among them) who have been inspired by his blueprint." Well that sounds great to me. And just from this trailer, even if you don't know much about him this doc promises to be enlightening. ›››

Watch: Powerful Short 'Documenting Death' by Sara Joe Wolansky

Documenting Death Short Film

"They gave her a space to reflect." The provocative headline in the New Yorker asks the question: "What Is It Like to Be Dying?" It's a headline for an 11-minute short film titled Documenting Death, made by New Yorker video producer Sara Joe Wolansky. The heartbreaking yet uplifting film is about the story of Kim Acquaviva and her wife, Kathy Brandt, who died of cancer in 2019. As they began to realize Brandt's health was in decline, they decided to document and share publicly their final days together (on social media via @kimacquaviva). This short film recaps everything and shares their social media posts and more. It's a tragic story to hear about, but they felt it was important to document anyway. "'In a culture where we don’t share almost anything around illness and death,' Acquaviva says in the film, 'the only way to counter that is for some people to share a little bit more than is probably appropriate.' The goal, she says, was to push back against the stigma associated with death and dying." There's something so moving and illuminating about it. ›››

Official US Trailer for British Comedy 'The Duke' with Jim Broadbent

The Duke Trailer

"What's he actually asking for?" "140,000 Pounds." "For what?" "Charity." "Good grief!" Sony Classics has debuted a follow-up official US trailer for the kooky British crime comedy film The Duke, the latest from filmmaker Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Changing Lanes, Venus, Morning Glory, Hyde Park on Hudson, My Cousin Rachel, Blackbird). This premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival and is opening in cinemas in the UK this September, then in the US later this fall. In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. This is the story of how, why, and who he was. It turns out he was just a bumbling British guy who didn't like paying for the BBC and wanted to come up with a scheme to make them change. Jim Broadbent stars as Kempton, with Helen Mirren, Matthew Goode, Charlotte Spencer, Fionn Whitehead, and John Heffernan. This is a rather harmless, feel-good British laugher but it's not innovative or iconic. Good fun stealing a painting. ›››

First Trailer for Eli Roth's 'Scariest Film I've Ever Made' Shark Doc 'Fin'

Fin Shark Doc Trailer

"I care about the ocean… I have to expose the truth." Discovery has launched the first official trailer for a new Eli Roth movie, and if that sounds a bit strange, don't worry as it's totally on brand (for both Roth and Discovery). Eli Roth's latest movie is called Fin, a documentary about sharks and saving them as they are being killed in larger and larger numbers. "Fin is the scariest film I've ever made, and certainly the most dangerous, but I wanted to send a message of hope to end this needless massacre of sharks. They keep our oceans clean to produce half our oxygen, and they deserve our respect and deserve to be saved, especially now when the shark fin sales ban is going before the House," Roth says. "I wanted to show the crisis from all sides and paired with an action campaign we can make the change necessary to protect them. Fifty years ago the world came together to save the whales, then we did it for dolphins, and recently for Orcas. It's time to do the same for sharks, and time is running out." This will make a great double feature with the other shark doc this year Playing with Sharks. Of course, Discovery is debuting this movie during Shark Week in July. ›››

Review: Justin Lin's 'F9' is a Preposterous But Entertaining Self-Parody

Fast 9 Review

Taiwanese-born American filmmaker Justin Lin (director of the films Better Luck Tomorrow, Annapolis, Tokyo Drift, and Star Trek Beyond previously) has directed five of the nine films in The Fast Saga already, including its lowest of lows (2009's Fast & Furious) and its highest of highs (2011's Fast Five). With Fast 9, known as just F9 or Fast & Furious 9, the auteur of automotive action returns to the franchise for the first time since 2013's Fast & Furious 6 for what is, arguably, the most ridiculous entry in a series that routinely pushes the limits of logic, physics, and heavy-handed family melodrama. Co-written by Lin and franchise newcomer Daniel Casey, F9 begins in 1989, with professional stock car driver Jack Toretto (J.D. Pardo) burnin' up the track at a speedway, his sons Dominic (Vinnie Bennett) & Jakob (Finn Cole) in his crew. ›››

Bigger Dreams, Bigger Stakes - First Trailer for Illumination's 'Sing 2'

Sing 2 Trailer

"She's afraid. She'll never be able to play the part." Universal has released the first full trailer for animation sequel Sing 2, from the studio Illumination. This is pretty much the same plot for the original rehashed, surprise surprise. Buster Moon and his friends must persuade reclusive rock star Clay Calloway to join them for the opening of a new show. As Gunter helps Buster dream up an out-of-this-world masterpiece, and the pressure (and sinister threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Rosita's leading role in the show gets ripped away and handed to Mr. Crystal's spoiled daughter, Porsha, played by Grammy-nominated artist Halsey. Desperate to save the show, and his life, Buster embarks on a quest to find Clay and persuade him to return to the stage. What begins as a dream of big-time success becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart. Sing 2 features the voice of Bono as Clay, along with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Pharrell Williams, Letitia Wright, Eric Andre, and Chelsea Peretti. Not sure how many have been awaiting this sequel, seems tailor made for anyone who loves singing shows. ›››

First Trailer for Sundance Hit 'CODA' with Emilia Jones & Troy Kotsur

CODA Trailer

"Do you have something to say?" Apple TV has debuted a wonderful new trailer for the Sundance hit CODA, made by Sian Heder. The film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and won both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at the fest (and was one of my Top 10). As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music and singing, and her fear of abandoning her parents and leaving her family behind. The excellent cast in CODA features Emilia Jones as Ruby, Troy Kotsur is a stand out role as her father, the enigmatic Marlee Matlin as her mother, plus Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Daniel Durant, John Fiore, and Eugenio Derbez. Every family has its own language. I wrote in my review that this film is a revolution for deaf cinema, and this trailer lives up to that potential. Enjoy. ›››

Exploring NYC Cinema Past in 'Searching for Mr. Rugoff' Doc Trailer

Searching for Mr. Rugoff Trailer

"There was an element of madness in him." The official trailer has debuted for an indie documentary film titled Searching for Mr. Rugoff, which may not seem that interesting from the title alone - but this is for anyone who loves cinema and cinemas. The film is about a cinema owner in NYC named Donald Rugoff. He was the "crazy genius" behind Cinema 5, the mid-century theater chain and film distribution company. But not that likeable. The story is told through the eyes of former employee Ira Deutchman, who sets out to find the truth about the man who had such a major impact on his life, and to also understand how such an important figure could have disappeared so completely. Deutchman on this finally releasing: "My original intention was to highlight the majesty of the theatrical experience in an entertaining way, but given where we are right now, the story has become all the more poignant. Independent art houses need our support to survive." This does indeed look like an enthralling film about a very peculiar part of cinema history in NYC. ›››

Watch: 'The Art of Movie Title Design' Video Essay by Luís Azevedo

The Art of Movie Title Design

Time for a lesson in movie title design! One of the latest must-watch cinema video essay creations from the outstanding Portuguese filmmaker / editor Luís Azevedo is a two-part examination into the The Art of Movie Title Design. These focus specifically on two famed designers: the iconic Saul Bass, an American designer who created titles for filmmakers including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese. And also Pablo Ferro, a young Cuban designer / editor who worked on many Stanley Kubrick movies as well. You definitely know the titles these two designed, but Luís also delves into their influences and techniques. This kind of breakdown of cinema history is remarkably fascinating, not only to learn how these films from the past were created, but to see how it has all evolved. Watch below. ›››

Sci-Fi Thriller 'Infinitum: Subject Unknown' Trailer with Ian McKellen

Infinitum: Subject Unknown Trailer

"We are on the cusp of propelling human evolution to a staggering new dimension." Gravitas Ventures has released a new US trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Infinitum: Subject Unknown. The title is a reference to the concept of "Ad Infinitum" - again and again in the same way; forever. A mind-bending slice of British science fiction, with cameos from Sir Ian McKellen and Conleth Hill. The film stars Tori Butler-Hart as Jane, a woman who is trapped in a parallel universe and is forced to find a way to alter her reality before it is too late. She soon discovers that she is stuck in a time-loop, destined to relive the same day over and over again. With each "reset" she begins to reclaim her memories and piece together the clues to what is happening. I dig sci-fi made on a budget that plays with big concepts, and I am very curious to see what this is about. I'd rather have kept the McKellen cameo a secret - but I guess it's best to promote it with his name. ›››

Official Trailer for Investigative Espionage Doc 'Enemies of the State'

Enemies of the State Trailer

"Truth does not matter." IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for the investigative thriller documentary titled Enemies of the State, about a family caught up in a government conspiracy. This first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and also stopped by CPH DOX and the Tribeca Film Festival. An average American family becomes entangled in a bizarre web of espionage and corporate secrets when their hacker son is targeted by the U.S. government. Enemies of the State is a timely and compelling media and legal case study, showing how conspiracies can be created, evolve, and be perpetuated with the help of the web and aided by lack of transparency by the government. At the same time, this film examines the transformation of a local criminal case to an international media story, and the trust – or blindness – of completely devoted parents who will protect their son, literally at all costs. This isn't as good as the other hacker docs out there, but it's a thought-provoking examination of one specific case. If this interests you, definitely watch this doc. ›››

Based on the original feature, the book has more scenes and more time spent with Rick and Cliff. Tarantino's tease: "In the movie, Cliff is a real enigma, you're kind of like, what's this guy's deal? And one of the things in the book is, there's these isolated chapters… It goes back in time to tell you about Cliff at this point in time." "Candyman ain't a 'he'. Candyman's the whole damn hive." Universal has unveiled a 2021 official trailer for the horror reboot Candyman, described as a "spiritual sequel" to the 1992 cult classic horror film starring Tony Todd. The first official trailer launched last year, and the movie was supposed to be out in theaters last year, but has finally been reset to open this August later in 2021. Producer Jordan Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend that your friend's older sibling likely told you about at a sleepover: Candyman. The film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris (from If Beale Street Could Talk), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, and Vanessa Williams, along with an appearance by the original Tony Todd. DaCosta explained in a video about the delay: "I started working on the film winter of 2019, I mean so much changed in that time… we had the really amazing show of political and cultural and emotional force." But now she wants everyone to watch it together. "Horror's just better in a room full of people who are also freaking out." It really looks like one of the best horror movies of the year. ›››
