Review: Ben Sharrock's 'Limbo' is One of the Best Refugee Films Yet

Limbo

"I cannot be myself back home." I need to write about this film because it's the best film I've seen in 2021 so far, and I've been thinking about it all the time since watching. Limbo is a dark comedy about the refugee experience in the UK written & directed by British filmmaker Ben Sharrock, and it was initially supposed to premiere at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival last year (before it was cancelled). Instead, it premiered at the Toronto, San Sebastian, Zurich, and London Film Festivals in the fall, and it has already been earning rave reviews. I'm so glad I finally caught up with it. Limbo would be my top pick for the Palme d'Or if Cannes had happened, really truly. I honestly want to drop the m word and call this a masterpiece. I loved it so much. It's perfect, there's not a thing to change about it. It even sticks the landing - in a seriously exhilarating way. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Two Gods' Doc About a Muslim Mentor in Newark

Two Gods Trailer

"I know he always there for me." An official trailer has debuted for an acclaimed indie documentary called Two Gods, marking the feature directorial debut of Brooklyn-based filmmaker Zeshawn Ali. This initially premiered at last year's Hot Docs Film Festival, and it also stopped by the Camden & Montclair Film Fests. Two Gods is a documentary film that tells the story of Hanif, a Muslim casket maker and ritual body washer in Newark who takes two young men from the neighborhood – Furquan and Naz – under his wing to teach them how to live better lives. "Shot in exquisite black and white, Zeshawn Ali's auspicious feature debut is a lyrical meditation on the importance of community and passing down generational knowledge through faith, brotherhood and redemption." One of the many quotes in this trailer says it is a "masterpiece waiting to be discovered" and from the looks of it, that might just be true. This doc is worth your time. Take a look below. ›››

Fresh US Trailer for Australian Sci-Fi Spectacle 'Occupation: Rainfall'

Occupation: Rainfall Poster

"Something big is coming…" Saban Films has debuted a new official US trailer for an Australian sci-fi action thriller titled Occupation: Rainfall, from filmmaker Luke Sparke. This is a completely different trailer than the UK trailer we posted last week. Two years after aliens land on Earth, survivors from Sydney, Aus., fight in a desperate war as the number of casualties continue to grow. It's described as "Avatar meets Star Wars meets Independence Day," and I'll be damned if it doesn't have that kind of feeling in these trailers. From the VFX team behind The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049, Sparke's Occupation: Rainfall is a new "sci-fi action epic with an all star cast." Temuera Morrison co-stars with Ken Jeong, Jet Tranter, Dan Ewing, Lawrence Makoare, Daniel Gillies, Dena Kaplan, and Jason Isaacs. Bring on the rain! I just hope this is as kick ass as it looks! It could go either way, but I'm even more excited to watch it and find out. ›››

'Marvel Studios' Assembled' Behind-the-Scenes Doc Series Trailer #2

Marvel Studios Assembled Trailer

"Let's roll again! I'm on!" Marvel + Disney have revealed a fun official trailer for their next episode in their behind-the-scenes doc series called Marvel Studios' Assembled. This "making of" series ties in with the new Disney+ Marvel shows that have been debuting this year - including WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Loki coming up soon. This one is for the latest ep about The Making of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which takes a closer look at what went into creating this series. Not only does it cover production, but it seems to also talk about story details, and how the new characters transitioned from Chris Evans' Cap to Anthony Mackie's Falcon. "Go beyond the shield and behind the scenes." I always love seeing behind-the-scenes featurettes because we get a glimpse at how massive and complex filmmaking is - big sound stages, thousands of people, enormous sets, cameras, and more. This launches today on Disney+. ›››

Netflix Trailer for Thai Horror 'Ghost Lab' Trying to Prove Ghosts Exist

Ghost Lab Trailer

"You aren't supposed to believe in these things." Netflix has debuted a new trailer for a ghost horror film from Thailand called Ghost Lab, streaming in the US and Thailand starting this May. After witnessing a haunting, two young doctors become dangerously obsessed with obtaining scientific proof that ghosts exist. Gla and Wee, played by Paris Intarakomalyasut and Thanapob Leeratanakajorn, two medical doctor buddies see a ‘ghost’ with their own eyes when an afterlife experiment goes wrong. The encounter spawns an insatiable desire to find a scientific explanation for ghostly spirits, and to find proof of the afterlife. Their fixation and reckless pursuit of unattainable knowledge will take them down a rabbit hole that might cost them their friendship, and their loved ones. Also starring Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich as Mai. This is a cool concept (reminds me of Flatliners), especially from a Thai filmmaker, it feels like there's a whole different vibe to this than what we're used to with horror. I dig it. Glad it will be launching on Netflix soon. ›››

New US Trailer for Yamato Warship Film 'The Great War of Archimedes'

The Great War of Archimedes

"Their battleship will lead directly to war." Well Go USA has released a new official trailer for the Japanese drama titled The Great War of Archimedes, which originally opened in Japan back in 2019. Everyone has heard of the anime Space Battleship Yamato, but have you heard the real story of the actual Yamato warship? It fought in WWII, then sunk in 1945. The Great War of Archimedes, based on the 2015 manga series “Archimedes no Taisen," is a dramatized depiction of the behind-the-scenes struggles of the Japanese Navy while building the Yamato, the largest battleship in the world, prior to WWII. The film is produced by Toho, and directed by Takashi Yamazaki - of Space Battleship Yamato, Stand by Me Doraemon, Dragon Quest: Your Story, and the most recent 3D CGI Lupin III: The First film (which he made after this but was released before this film). First Teaser for Doc 'The Gig Is Up' About Pitfalls of the Gig Economy

The Gig Is Up Trailer

"There is a cost to convenience." Dogwoof has revealed a promo teaser trailer for the indie documentary titled The Gig Is Up, the latest from award-winning Canadian filmmaker Shannon Walsh. Her new doc about the gig economy is premiering at both Hot Docs and the CPH:DOX Film Festivals this spring, which is why this first trailer is dropping now to build buzz in the doc marketplace. App developers lured a massive labor force by promising flexible hours with no offices or bosses-but with gig workers from Uber, Amazon, Lyft and more in front of the camera, the human cost of disruption runs deep. "A very human tech doc, The Gig Is Up uncovers the real costs of the platform economy through the lives of workers from around the world for companies including Uber, Amazon and Deliveroo." The film tells the stories of the workers giving up everything just to make a living. I'm not expecting this doc to make anyone change, but I'm glad they're starting to focus on what's really going on with corporations taking advantage of the gig workers worldwide. ›››

Hell in a Handbasket Trailer

"What could possibly go wrong!?" Jetlag Pictures has debuted the official trailer for an indie sci-fi comedy short film called Hell in a Handbasket, the latest from Canadian filmmaker Lee Chambers. He explains that they made this film "under the same conditions as the Covid-19 lockdowns… Shot in snowy Canada with actor Hoyt Richards (the world's first male supermodel) phoning in his performance via his iPhone 12 from Los Angeles." The short is about a lonely research scientist in the Arctic struggling to live alone in the cold. But with the world failing from a global pandemic, all hopes fall on Dale's shoulders as he represents the last stand for humanity. The tagline is flawless: "It all comes down to Dale… Dale?" Ha. Vanessa Redgrave in Christoph Waltz's D.C. Drama 'Georgetown' Trailer

Georgetown Trailer

"Try to get to know him before you condemn him!" Paramount Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie political drama titled Georgetown, marking the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning Austrian actor Christoph Waltz. This already premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago, but has been waiting for a release ever since. It never played at any other festivals which is a bad sign, on top of the release delay. Waltz also stars in the film as Ulrich Mott, an ambitious social climber, who marries a wealthy widow in Washington D.C. in order to mix with powerful political players… and get his hands on her money. The film's impressive cast features Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, Corey Hawkins, Laura de Carteret, Dan Lett, and Amin Bhatia. This seems like such a sleazy story, but I guess that's the point, examining the lengths some people go to get a grasp on money and power. This just doesn't look that good. ›››

Wish Dragon Trailer

"How long have you been in that teapot?" Netflix has debuted a new teaser trailer for the animated movie Wish Dragon, a Sony Animation production that is being released by Netflix in a few countries coming up this summer. This Chinese co-production already opened in China earlier this year. Based on a story by children's book illustrator Chris Applehans (who also wrote / directed), this is a "genie-in-a-bottle retelling set in contemporary China" that "picks up the moral challenges that emerge from the encounter between a boy and a dragon who is able to make wishes come true." A working-class college student meets a dragon and the two go off on an adventure through modern day Shanghai. "A tale of discovering the greatest wish of all." The voice cast includes John Cho as the dragon, Jimmy Wong as his new friend, plus Constance Wu, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Will Yun Lee, Bobby Lee, Jimmy O. Yang, and Ian Chen. Starring Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, and Stacy Martin. There's still no UK release date yet, but it's set to open in the US in July. First Look + 8mm Footage of Neill Blomkamp's Horror Film 'Demonic'

Demonic Footage

In 2020, Neill Blomkamp began shooting a secret horror film known only as Demonic. Time for a first look sneak peek! Last year it was revealed that filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, who lives up in Vancouver, Canada, decided to go out and shoot a low budget horror film in the woods during the pandemic summer. The title of the film is Demonic, but aside from a few hints here & there, not much is known about it - or what happens in it. The short synopsis: A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother & daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The film stars Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. We now have two new photos and a fun little "behind-the-scenes 8mm" teaser to start building hype. There isn't much to this teaser, except a shot of Carly Pope floating, and some drones getting ready to film in the woods. Nonetheless, I'm still looking forward to seeing more of this. ›››

Action Movie 'The Misfits' Trailer with Pierce Brosnan & Jamie Chung

The Misfits Trailer

"Let's roll." Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for an action thriller known as The Misfits, the latest movie from Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin, who had an epic run in the 90s (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea) but hasn't made anything that exciting recently. After being recruited by a group of unconventional thieves, renowned criminal Richard Pace finds himself caught up in an elaborate gold heist that promises to have far-reaching implications on his life and the lives of countless others. Another of these updated takes on "Robin Hood", where corporate Hollywood studios try to tell a story about stealing from the rich and giving to the poor but, huh, for some strange reason they can never get this story right. I wonder why. The Misfits cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Jamie Chung, Rami Jaber, Hermione Corfield, Mike Angelo, Tim Roth, and Nick Cannon. Ngo's doc Faceless is an intimate portrayal of four young protestors in Hong Kong struggling to protect their freedom and way of life under the shadow of authoritarianism. The film takes us to the front lines of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong to meet four brave young people. "As protests morph into a greater city-wide movement calling for democracy and justice against police brutality, each of them are forced to re-examine their motives, their values and personal relationships." Oslo recounts the true-life, previously secret, back-channel negotiations in the development of the pivotal 1990s Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization. "In the face of conflict, they sought peace. Based on the remarkable true story of the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords." The film stars Ruth Wilso as Mona Juul, Andrew Scott as Terje Rød-Larsen, with a full cast including Jeff Wilbusch, Salim Dau, Waleed Zuaiter, Igal Naor, Doval'e Glickman, Rotem Keinan, and Itzik Cohen. First Trailer for Steven Spielberg's New Remake of 'West Side Story'

West Side Story Trailer

"Somewhere a place for us…" 20th Century Studios has debuted a surprise teaser trailer during the Oscar ceremony for the new Steven Spielberg movie - a remake of the classic musical West Side Story. This was filmed in the summer of 2019, and has been rescheduled for release in theaters this December - right in the middle of the next upcoming awards season, of course. An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The story focuses on the love story between teenagers Tony, played by Ansel Elgort, and Maria, played by newcomer Rachel Zegler. The rest of the big ensemble cast includes Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James, Curtiss Cook, and Rita Moreno. This looks like an exciting refresh on the classic, but don't forget Jon M. Chu's NYC musical In the Heights opens in the summer, too. Damnnnn is a magnificent teaser trailer, what a pitch! This got me good. ›››

The 93rd Academy Awards are finally upon us and it's time to watch the show and discover the winners of the most prestigious award in Hollywood. Second Trailer for Zhang Yimou's Snowy 1930s Spy Noir 'Cliff Walkers'

Cliff Walkers Trailer 2

"How did you know they were spies?" "We have a traitor high up in the ranks." CMC Pictures has debuted a second official trailer for Cliff Walkers, the latest film made by Zhang Yimou following his martial arts epic Shadow a few years ago. This one is arriving in theaters in the US in just a week! We already posted one full trailer before, but here's another as a fresh reminder - it even ends with a strong "In Theatres April 30" title card. In the puppet state of Manchukuo (founded in 1932 after the Japanese invasion of Manchuria), four Communist party special agents, after returning to China, embark on a secret mission… Sold out by a traitor, the team finds themselves surrounded by threats on all sides. A noir spy thriller starring Zhang Yi, Qin Hailu, Yu Hewei, and Zhu Yawen. The trailer say this is Zhang Yimou's first spy thriller, though I'm looking forward to it just because it looks beautifully shot and seems quite intense. All these snowy scenes… ›››

Mike Akel in Tennis Comedy 'The Tiny Life of Butcher Duke' Trailer

The Tiny Life of Butcher Duke Trailer

"There's a tiny home on the line, let's not play around." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official US trailer for an indie comedy called The Tiny Life of Butcher Duke, made by filmmaker Mike Apel, who writes, directs, produces, and stars in this. The film first premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival and Hill Country Film Festival back in 2019, and is finally getting a VOD release this spring. The Tiny Life of Butcher Duke is an indie comedy about retired tennis "legend" who attempts to win his life back by competing in a tennis rematch to win his very own tiny home. Aside from Apel as Duke, the cast includes Chad Werner, Emily Hiott, Jeff McQuitty, Jill Young, Emma Rappold, Jon Michael Simpson, Shane Pederson, and Gary Teague. This almost plays like a sports mockumentary, but also just looks like some kooky indie fun. ›››

Watch: Short Doc 'Ukiyo-e Technique' About Japanese Printmaking

Ukiyo-e Technique Video

"Each block is made from 100 year old mountain cherry." This isn't a new video to enjoy, but it's certainly worth watching anyway and might inspire artistic minds. Thanks to recent "unintentional ASMR" finds, this Ukiyo-e Technique video from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art has been rediscovered by the internet. It features master printmaker Keiji Shinohara going through his process of transferring (or is it "painting"?) a woodblock print onto paper, a beautiful traditional Japanese technique that has been used for centuries. I am a huge fan of Japanese woodblock prints (I even own an original Japanese art print I picked up from the Ronin Gallery in NYC) and this video is so delightful. It's also a calming, meditative 18-minute short doc that features nothing but Keiji quietly doing printmaking and talking about it. View below. ›››

Psychotronic B&W Elderly Horror Comedy 'Dementia Part II' Trailer

Dementia Part II Trailer

"Last night I tried to kill my wife." Dark Star has released an official US trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Dementia Part II, which is indeed technically a sequel to the horror Dementia from 2015. But the concept is mostly about being old as an invitation for supernatural evil. This originally premiered in 2018 at FrightFest, Sitges, and the Chattanooga Film Festival; it's finally getting a US release this spring. Suzanne Voss plays Suzanne. Suzanne wasn't always this confused. She wasn't always dead either – when an ex-con takes a job as a handyman for an unstable elderly woman to avoid a parole violation, it becomes a choice he may regret. Also starring Matt Mercer, Graham Skipper, & Najarra Townsend. This looks like some grungy grindhouse nastiness. Watch out - this trailer is disgusting, please don't watch it if you've just eaten. ›››

2021 Indie Spirit Awards: 'Nomadland', 'Sound of Metal', 'Crip Camp'

2021 Indie Spirit Awards Winners

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring all of the indie films which deserve the honor and recognition that they usually don't receive - celebrating their 36th year. The 2021 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Thursday evening just before the Oscars in a virtual ceremony, still filled with all kinds of excitement and surprises. The two main winners this year: Chloe Zhao's Nomadland, heading home with four wins in total, and Sound of Metal, winning for Best First Feature, and both the Best Male Lead & Supporting Male. The rest of the nominees from 2020 included many outstanding little films that everyone has been talking about all year (like Minari!), but they deserve this extra attention anyway. These are always a nice counter-balance to the Oscars, especially with lots of films that didn't get any noms there (e.g. First Cow). Read on for the list of 2021 Indie Spirits results. ›››

Restoration Trailer for Melvin Van Peebles' 'Story of a Three-Day Pass'

The Story of a Three-Day Pass

"I'm not the Captain's Uncle Tom!" "Maybe yes, maybe no?" Janus Films has released a brand new trailer for the 4K restoration of Melvin Van Peebles' 1968 film The Story of a Three-Day Pass, also known as La permission in French. The film stars Harry Baird as Turner, an African-American solider stationed in France who is granted a promotion and a three-day leave from base. He ends up in Paris and falls in love with a white woman, played by Nicole Berger. But what happens to their love when his furlough is over? He's eventually demoted "for fraternizing with a white girl", of course, in this exploration of "the psychology of an interracial relationship as well as a commentary on France's contradictory attitudes about race." The new 4K restoration was arranged by IndieCollect in consultation with Mario Van Peebles, with support from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. And it will play in cinemas in NY & LA starting in May, for anyone in town who wants to see this shiny new print on the big screen. It looks very much worth catching up with. ›››

Wacky New US Trailer for Abel Ferrara's 'Siberia' with Willem Dafoe

Siberia Trailer

"Your soul is outside of you, and you must claim it!" Lionsgate has unveiled an official US trailer for the latest Abel Ferrara wacky mind-fuck film titled Siberia, starring his muse Willem Dafoe. This originally premiered at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival just before the pandemic shut everything down, and we featured an early promo trailer back then. It's now set for release this June in the US, if anyone wants to watch. The short description says it's "an exploration into the language of dreams." Dafoe plays Clint, a damaged man who has retreated to a wintry remote mountain cabin where he hopes to find serenity. He runs a modest cafe where the rare traveler or native of the region visits. But even in his relative isolation he cannot find peace nor escape. On a fateful evening, to confront himself, he begins a journey by dogsled to the world he once knew. He travels through dreams, memory and imagination in an attempt to find his true nature. Onward. In addition to Dafoe, the cast includes Dounia Sichov, Simon McBurney, Cristina Chiriac, and Anna Ferrara. This is experimental filmmaking that annoys the hell out of me, but others may find it fascinating. ›››

Digitizing Our Memories in New Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi 'Cerebrum'

Cerebrum Trailer

"I don't trust myself anymore…" Glasshouse Distribution has released a new official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Cerebrum, marking the feature directorial debut of "visionary new filmmaker" Arvi Ragu. It's premiering at WorldFest in Houston this month, then arrives on VOD right after that. Yet another low budget sci-fi trying to play with big concepts like digitizing humanity and artificial intelligence, with some nods to Minority Report. A test subject at a memory transfer lab commits a crime he cannot remember. The premise explores "what will happen if our memories can be digitized as backups and used to restore it if it ever failed." This stars Christian James as Tom, Alexxis Lemire, John Ruby, James Russo, Andy Pisharody, and Aly Trasher. This has a bit of a Primer look and feel to it, I just hope it's smart and not too cheesy. They often start with a pretty cool idea, then the film ends up being not that interesting to watch. ›››

Official Trailer for Doc 'It's Not a Burden' on Raising Elderly Parents

It's Not a Burden Doc Trailer

"Sweetheart, I might have to have a colonoscopy." Gravitas has released a trailer for a documentary called It's Not a Burden, or titled in full It's Not a Burden: The Humor and Heartache of Raising Elderly Parents. Watch: Kwesi Thomas' Short Doc Film 'Battleground' About Racism

Battleground Short Doc Film

"Loving takes your further than 'not hating', because to love someone is to know what hurts them." Yep. An important short doc film about racism. Battleground is the creation of filmmakers Kwesi Thomas & Mark Bone, developed through conversations immediately following the murder of George Floyd last year (finally there is some justice a year later). Vimeo premiered the 18-minute film and says: "the short captures the particular discomfort of having to argue for one’s value in a society that should care instead of question. Kwesi, a Black man, powerfully conveys these feelings to his co-director Mark, a white man, in the wake of George Floyd's death last May." This was made up in Canada, but still connects with the experiences of any Black person in North America. "The film [is] an attempt to articulate the confusing, vertiginous, experience of one's skin being a site of social conflict, a 'battleground,'" the filmmakers explain. It's beautifully shot and features a number of meaningful conversations with many people about their experiences with racism today. ›››

Tahj Mowry is Afraid to Leave His Apartment in 'Welcome Matt' Trailer

Welcome Matt Trailer

"It's just not safe out there." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a very meta indie comedy called Welcome Matt, the feature directorial debut from filmmaker Leon Pierce Jr. The film is not only commentary on the process of making a film, but is also a story about staying home even though it doesn't reference or have any connection to the pandemic (or to lockdowns). Matt, a well known writer and director, suffers a traumatic experience on the verge of his big break, that leads to him becoming deathly afraid to go outside (due to agoraphobia). Therefore he decides to attempt to write, direct, and star in a feature film, all from his apartment. With the help of an in-home therapist, he makes an effort to overcome his fears. This stars Tahj Mowry (from "Baby Daddy" and other TV shows) as Matt, along with Deon Cole, Jazsmin Lewis-Kelley, Adriyan Rae, Dorien Wilson, G.G. Townson, and Aaron Grady. Looks like a fun one. ›››

Temuera Morrison Fights Back in Sci-Fi 'Occupation: Rainfall' Trailer

Occupation Rainfall Trailer

"Bring the rain." Signature Entertainment in the UK has unveiled the official UK trailer for an Australian sci-fi action thriller titled Occupation: Rainfall, from filmmaker Luke Sparke. Two years after aliens land on Earth, survivors from Sydney, Australia, fight in a desperate war as the number of casualties continue to grow. It's described as "Avatar meets Star Wars meets Independence Day," which is a hell of a marketing pitch for a film that definitely won't live up to any of those (sorry not sorry). This does have some massive VFX sequences, which is quite impressive, but the mash-up of unoriginal sci-fi ideas seems to be its biggest drawback. Check this out. ›››

Official US Trailer for 'Edge of the World' with Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Edge of the World Trailer

"Might I be allowed to go up river?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official US trailer for a colonial historic thriller titled Edge of the World, a jungle crusade movie from director Michael Haussman. We already posted the epic UK trailer one month ago. The film takes us on the true "adventures" of Sir James Brooke, who defied the British Empire to rule a jungle kingdom in 1840s Borneo, embarked on a lifelong crusade to end piracy, slavery and head-hunting, and partly inspired both the Rudyard Kipling story "The Man Who Would Be King" and Joseph Conrad's "Lord Jim". To save his people, he must shed Englishness and embrace the jungle: "All of it, the beauty and the blood." The film stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Brooke, along with Dominic Monaghan, Ralph Ineson, Hannah New, Josie Ho, & Bront Palarae. This looks like a very powerful story of defiant men. As grand as The New World or Hearts of Darkness. I'm not sure why it's going direct-to-VOD this summer, but maybe we should all be keeping an eye on this one. ›››

Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided To Go For It Trailer

"She just brings such authority and such honesty to whatever she's playing." Roadside Attractions debuted an official trailer for a documentary film titled Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided To Go For It, made by Puerto Rican filmmaker Mariem Pérez Riera. This first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, and Sarasota Film Festivals. The film offers a celebratory look at the life and 70+ year career of Rita Moreno, from her humble beginnings in Puerto Rico to her success on Broadway and in Hollywood where she broke down barriers, and fought for representation and forged a path for new generations of artists. The doc feature "illuminates the humor and the grace of Moreno, as well as lesser-known struggles faced on her path to stardom, including pernicious Hollywood sexism and abuse, a toxic relationship with Marlon Brando, and serious depression a year before she emerged an Oscar winner." Looks like a wonderful life-affirming profile of a massively talented woman. ›››
