Legendary Scottish Actor Sean Connery Has Passed Away at Age 90

Sean Connery

Noooooooo not another!! The one-and-only Sean Connery has died at age 90. His family reports that he has been "unwell for some time" (via BBC), and passed away in the Bahamas with much of his family with him. The original James Bond! Indiana Jones' dad! And so many other iconic roles in so many outstanding movies - including The Man Who Would Be King, The Great Train Robbery, Murder on the Orient Express, Zardoz, Time Bandits, The Hunt for Red October, Medicine Man, The Rock, Dragonheart, Entrapment, and Finding Forrester. Connery only won one Academy Award in his lifetime - for Best Supporting Actor in The Untouchables (in 1987) but that's it. He also won one BAFTA Award for Best Actor in The Name of the Rose (in 1986). He proved himself over and over in different roles, and almost always charmed everyone. He has only one child, Jason Connery born in 1963, as well as a younger brother named Neil. A heartbreaking loss. ›››

Demonic Animatronics + Nicolas Cage in 'Willy's Wonderland' Teaser

Willy's Wonderland Teaser Trailer

"Hey kids, do you know what time it is?!" Well, I'm sold! Screen Media has released an official trailer for a wacky action horror coming up next year titled Willy's Wonderland. There's no date set - they're holding it until sometime in 2021 - but I'm already looking forward to it. A quiet drifter is tricked into a janitorial job at the now condemned Willy's Wonderland - which seems to be mocking Chuck E. Cheese. The mundane tasks suddenly become an all-T fight for survival against wave after wave of demonic animatronics. Fists fly, kicks land, titans clash -- and only one side will make it out alive. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Emily Tosta, Beth Grant, Ric Reitz, and Chris Warner. There's only a few glimpses in this teaser trailer, but it's more than enough for me. This is going to be wild! And I can't wait to watch! Bring on Willy's madness. ›››

Jackie Chan is an Accountant in Explosive 'Vanguard' Action Trailer

Vanguard Trailer

"The enemy has moved in." Gravitas has released a new US trailer for the crazy cool action film Vanguard, starring Jackie Chan - who is still making action films despite announcing he would retire. This time he re-teams with the HK director of his classic action films Supercop, Supercop 2, Rumble in the Bronx, and First Strike - Stanley Tong. An accountant is threatened by the world's deadliest mercenary organization and Covert security company Vanguard is the last hope of survival for him. Of course. This is basically a Michael Bay film made by a Hong Kong director instead. Also starring Yang Yang, Miya Muqi, Lun Ai, Ruohan Xu, and Zhengting Zhu. As brainless as this movie will be, I must admit it looks like a massive amount of explosive action fun - with drones and lions and gatling guns and more. Might be worth a watch. ›››

Official Trailer for Relationship Drama 'The Killing of Two Lovers' Film

The Killing of Two Lovers Trailer

"You need to fight. You need to fight for us." Neon has released the first official trailer for the indie small town relationship drama The Killing of Two Lovers, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. David desperately tries to keep his family of six together during a separation from his wife. They both agree to see other people but David struggles to grapple with his wife's new relationship. The film, with its honest and sometimes brutal portrayals of marriage, is driven by impressively nuanced performances by stars Clayne Crawford, Sepideh Moafi, Chris Coy, Avery Pizzuto, Arri Graham, and Ezra Graham. Featuring some fantastic cinematography by Oscar Ignacio Jiménez. This looks a brutal exploration of family and emotional frustration, and the look and feel really makes it stand out. Take a look. ›››

Fun First Trailer for 'The Stand In' Comedy Starring Drew Barrymore

The Stand In Trailer

"Okay everybody, let's flush this turd down the toilet!" Hollywood, eh? Saban Films has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Stand In, an amusing Hollywood-life comedy about an actress and her stand in. From filmmaker Jamie Babbit, The Stand In is the story of a disaffected comedy actress and her ambitious stand-in trading places. Drew Barrymore stars in both roles, and hires her stand-in to take her place at rehab. But of course they both learn lessons in the process. Also starring Michael Zegen, TJ Miller, Holland Taylor, Michelle Buteau, and Ellie Kemper. This looks like a fun concept to mess around with but it seems a bit meh overall. At least Barrymore looks like she's having good fun making this. ›››

Shira Haas & Lior Ashkenazi in Trailer for Israeli Bakery Drama 'Esau'

Esau Trailer

"You feel this sour smell? It's the dough starting to rise… Nothing can stop it now." ShineHouse Group has debuted an official US trailer for an indie drama titled Esau an Israeli drama made by a Russian filmmaker. This originally premiered at the Shanghai Film Festival last year, and arrives on VOD in the US this month. The film stars Harvey Keitel, Lior Ashkenazi, Mark Ivanir, and Shira Haas. The cinematography is a bit basic, but the film seems to have a lot of heart and a lot of authentic emotion worked into it. Official Trailer for Errol Morris' LSD Doc 'My Psychedelic Love Story'

My Psychedelic Love Story Trailer

"So you're a C.I.A. plant?" Cutting to the chase! Showtime has unveiled a new official full trailer for Errol Morris' latest documentary titled My Psychedelic Love Story, which is premiering at AFI Fest coming up this fall. We posted a teaser trailer for this doc earlier in the summer, before it had an official title, now it's set to debut on Showtime in November. This documentary focuses, once again, on LSD and the "High Priest of LSD" Timothy Leary. And this isn't the first time Morris has dabbled in LSD, as his Netflix series "Wormwood" is also about the CIA and psychedelics. The film is inspired by Harcourt-Smith's memoir, "Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story", and Morris interviews her to discuss her history with Leary before he became an informant for the FBI. "Devotion or selfishness? Perfect love or outright betrayal? Destiny or manipulation? Whatever the reason, the doomed relationship between Joanna and Timothy put the final nail in the coffin of the 1960s counterculture." Damn this looks crazy fascinating. ›››

"I think we need to finish our story." What if Pixar made a horror movie? That's the best way to pitch this short. A Night in Camp Heebie Jeebie is an amusing animated horror short film made by filmmaker / animator Dylan Chase. This passion project took him three years to complete in his own time, working with his collaborator Dave Jacobson. It recently premiered at the Nightstream Film Festival to rave reviews. One stormy night in Camp Heebie Jeebie, five girl scouts realize that the spooky stories they've been telling each other just to pass the time might not be just stories. Featuring the voices of Hadley Granger (Sawtooth), Britney Rose (Luna), Claire Gray (Static), Leon Masuda (Smootch), and also Riley Madison Perez (Sprinkles). Crossing into a Multiverse Has Consequences in 'Parallel' Film Trailer

Parallel Trailer

"This is the biggest unfair advantage in human history." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Parallel, from filmmaker Isaac Ezban (of The Similars, The Incident). This originally premiered in 2018 at all the fall genre fests: FrightFest, Morbido, Sitges, Utopia, and a few others including Fantasia in Montreal. A group of friends stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a "multiverse", but soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences. Whod've thought?! The film stars Aml Ameen, Martin Wallström, Georgia King, Mark O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, with David Harewood and Kathleen Quinlan. I dig the setup and the intro to the parallel universe, but I'm worried it will get really cheesy when bad things start happening. ›››

Anthony Hopkins & Lisa Pepper in Psychological Thriller 'Elyse' Trailer

Elyse Trailer

"The wayward heart is just a wild animal… beast that needs to be tamed." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for the indie psychological thriller / drama of sorts called Elyse, the first feature made by Anthony Hopkins' Colombian wife named Stella Hopkins. She also co-wrote the screenplay. Memory and hallucination intertwine to expose a history of trauma, revealing Elyse is Catatonic and institutionalized in a State Hospital. Her recovery is reliant on the dissolution of her marriage, the restoration of the relationship with her mother, and the mutual absolution with the nanny's daughter, Carmen. It's the care from Dr. Lewis and the unconditional love from her nurse, David, that promise Elyse a new life. The film stars Anthony Hopkins, Lisa Pepper as Elyse, as well as Aaron Tucker, Tara Arroyave, Fran Tucker, Anthony Apel, Julieta Oritiz, and Danny Jacobs. I'm not sure why they need to blatantly reveal in the synopsis that she's catatonic, but it doesn't make it any more interesting either. This all still looks rather forgettable. ›››

First Full Trailer for 'Songbird' Thriller Set During a COVID Pandemic

Songbird Trailer

"Sometimes we have to do things we don't want… to survive." STX Films has unveiled an official trailer for Songbird, being billed as "the first feature film to be made during COVID-19 in Los Angeles, and about the pandemic itself." Set in 2022, a COVID-23 pandemic ravages the world and its cities. The film centers on a handful of people as they navigate the new obstacles currently hindering society controlled by a pandemic: disease, martial law, quarantine, and vigilantes. Infected people are forced into quarantine camps known as Q-Zones. Starring KJ Apa as Nico, a courier who falls for a woman in lockdown, played by Sofia Carson. Songbird also stars Bradley Whitford and Demi Moore as a wealthy couple who may hold the key to Nico's mission; Alexandra Daddario as a singer enmeshed in a messy and forbidden affair; Paul Walter Hauser as a disabled veteran whose best friend – a drone named Max – is his eyes and ears to a world that has left him behind; Craig Robinson as Nico's boss; and Peter Stormare as the corrupt head of the city's "sanitation" department, which seizes those infected and transports them to the Q-Zone. Sounds like a truly horrifying thriller that hits just a little too close to home. Escapism or… escape right-back-into-reality-ism? ›››

Crazy Trailer for Absurdly Weird Canadian Biopic 'Twentieth Century'

Twentieth Century Trailer

"A colorized acid trip through historic hell." Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled the US trailer for Twentieth Century, a very strange and absurdly weird biopic of sorts. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and also played at the Berlin, Cartagena, Bucheon, and L'Étrange Film Festivals this year. Renowned for his mesmerizing, gonzo biographical short films Mynarski Death Plummet and The Tesla World Light, filmmaker Matthew Rankin doubles down on his signature blend of historical and aesthetic abstraction with his debut feature, a bizarre biopic that re-imagines the formative years of the former Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King as a series of abject humiliations. This uber wacky, expressionism adventure stars Dan Beirne as Mackenzie, plus Sarianne Cormier, Catherine St-Laurent, Mikhaïl Ahooja, Brent Skagford, Seán Cullen, and Louis Negin. It's almost impossible to describe this film - some will hate it, some will go nuts for it. But at least it exists, for better or worse. You have to take a look. ›››

Watch: 'Love Me Like You Hate Me' Music Video w/ Qualley & LaBeouf

Love Me Like You Hate Me Music Video

"I'm so scared of breakin' up…" Some of the most creative filmmaking is in music videos, because they have the freedom to do whatever they want and express emotions in imaginative ways. Love Me Like You Hate Me is a music video for the Rainsford song "Love Me Like You Hate Me", and it stars Margaret Qualley (Rainsford's real-life sister) and Shia LaBeouf. It's a choreographed dance featuring the actors as lovers. The video is presented in the 4:3 aspect ratio with split above/below shots, and their movements play out opposite of each other - each video ends up where the other one begins. Rainsford (aka Rainey Qualley) wrote on Instagram: "Please watch it. It's filled with love and pain and tenderness and rage and real pieces of my heart." It is very NSFW - both actors perform entirely nude and while there is no sex, it is seductive and intimate. More than anything, it's worth watching as a bit of experimental filmmaking and expression. ›››

First Festival Trailer for Non-Binary Romantic Drama 'Under My Skin'

One of the first ever films to deal with non-binary gender as a part of the plot. Denny, a free spirit and artist falls for Ryan, a straight laced lawyer. But when Denny questions gender their love is tested. The lead character, Denny, is played by four different actors who identify as non-binary, or trans non-binary: Liv Hewson, Bobbi Salvör Menuez, and newcomers Lex Ryan and Chloe Freeman. The cast includes Alex Russell and Alexis Denisof. I'm very curious to see how this film handles sexual identity as a key part of the story. ›››

Review: With a Few Stumbles, 'The Craft: Legacy' is Still Quite Magical

The Craft: Legacy Review

For as long as I can remember, I have always been very interested in witches – especially on screen. I used to watch "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", "Charmed", and many other shows. Hence, it's no surprise that when I discovered The Craft, I immediately became obsessed. The film from 1996, directed by Andrew Fleming, is, without a doubt, a Halloween must-watch. Which is why I was incredibly happy to hear that Zoe Lister-Jones wrote and directed a follow-up to the events that transpired in the first movie. Directing her second feature, The Craft: Legacy, Zoe Lister-Jones showcases magic, sisterhood, toxic masculinity, and more. ›››

Watch: Creepy Pandemic Horror Short 'Face Mask' by Huber & Allen

Face Mask Short Film

"Which one of these houses do you live in?" Don't forget your mask! Or else. This creepy new horror short is from filmmakers Zak White and Todd Spence, the same duo that makes lots of horror shorts all year long for Midnight Video. Face Mask is their latest creation, a social commentary horror about the pandemic and dangerous anti-mask idiots, as well as a very unsettling short with a wicked twist. When one man takes the trash out and is confronted by a neighbor one night, things get a bit tense. Starring Bill Parmentier and Zachary Allen Farmer. The mask guy's look and voice and everything about him is just so creepy. Spence & White, who let Adam Huber & Dan Allen direct this one, are always so good about taking a simple concept and making it super scary with some discomforting filmmaking tricks. And also writing something that comments on the pandemic (and masks) but doesn't overdo it is not that easy. Only 6-minutes - be careful. ›››

"A combination of beauty, pain, and longing…" An official trailer has debuted for a strange, mesmerizing new film titled Waikiki, marking the feature directorial debut of native Hawaiian filmmaker Christopher Kahunahana. One of the quotes in this trailer even says this "marks the emergence of a New Hawaiian Cinema" which actually might be the case. As much as that is superlative, this film seems like it might be the first of its kind - showing us a side of Hawaii we've never seen before. When a hula dancer on the run crashes into a broken spirit of a man (a mysterious homeless guy in the dead of night), they begin a journey into a hidden world, developing a connection through humanity, nature, and their culture. The indie film stars Danielle Zalopany as Kea, along with Peter Shinkoda, Jason Quinn, Kimo Kahoano, Nick Masciangelo, and Kainoa Mcgee. First Trailer for 'Stardust' About David Bowie's First Visit to the U.S.

Stardust Trailer

"All it takes is one believer to change the world, and we got two!" IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for Stardust, taking us back in time to the 1970s to meet a young rock star in the making. The film chronicles the young David Bowie's first visit to the U.S. in 1971 - a trip that inspired the invention of his iconic alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Stardust is a David Bowie movie that stars musician and actor Johnny Flynn (from Lovesick, Emma, Clouds of Sils Maria) as Bowie, with Marc Maron playing Mercury Records publicist Ron Oberman and Jena Malone as Angie Bowie, his partner at the time. It’s not a cradle-to-grave biopic – instead, it’s a slice of his life in 1971 at the age of 24 during a publicity tour where he was inspired to create the Ziggy persona. The cast includes Aaron Poole, Paulino Nunes, and Anthony Flanagan. There's also an outstanding poster (seen below) to go along with this. This looks like it might be sensational. ›››

How their lives and loves intersect is half the fun in this film that proves romance is alive and well… and as crazy as ever! Of course it is. Watch: Unnerving Horror Short Film 'A Doll Distorted' by Niall Shukla

A Doll Distorted Short Film

"I wish this could be real and not just imaginary." This love doll short film is as creepy as they come. A Doll Distorted is a horror short made by filmmaker Niall Shukla, and after playing at festivals for the last few years, it's finally available online. Just in time for Halloween so everyone can extra unnerved. Jane suffers from haphephobia (the pathological fear of touch) - tormented by years of loneliness and isolation she orders a synthetic love doll online to nightmarish consequences. This was made with only a crew of 2 people, and it was selected for over 60 festivals and won over 12 Jury Awards. Niall "made the film almost entirely by himself serving as the writer, director, editor, producer, set designer, sound designer, VFX artist, DP and composer. First Trailer for Dark Comedy 'King of Knives' About a Family in Crisis

King of Knives Trailer

"I'm just sitting back and… letting life do what it does." Gravitas has released the first official trailer for an indie dark comedy called King of Knives, marking the feature directorial debut of cinematographer Jon Delgado. The title is reference to the tarot card (aka "King of Swords"). No relation to Knives Out, this one is about a New York City family the implodes over three days as they careen through mid-life and quarter-life crises. We've seen plenty of these dysfunctional family comedies before. Described as "a darkly funny take on the modern family," and a film "that two disparate generations can fully relate to." King of Knives stars Gene Pope, Mel Harris, Roxi Pope, Emily Bennett, Kara Young, and Emma Myles. I certainly can appreciate the honesty in this footage, and hopefully there's more of that during the rest of the film. Enjoy. ›››

Irish Singer Shane MacGowan Profiled in 'Crock of Gold' Doc Trailer

Crock of Gold Trailer

"He went away… and he didn't come back." Magnolia Pictures has released an official trailer for the punk rock doc film Crock of Gold, made by acclaimed music filmmaker Julien Temple. The full title is Crock of Gold – A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan, described as a "deep dive" into and celebration of Irish punk poet Shane MacGowan, the composer and lead singer with The Pogues, combining unpublished archive footage and family footage with animation. MacGowan is known for combining "traditional Irish music with the visceral energy of punk rock" in his music. The film is also produced by Johnny Depp, and it just won a Special Jury Prize at this year's San Sebastian Film Festival - in honor of "[director] Julien Temple and Shane MacGowan for the beautiful, poetic, unflinching and unreconciled punk energy" exuding from the film. Always exciting to see music docs work in more than just archival footage to tell the full story. ›››

One More Trailer for 'Freaky' Body Swap Slasher with Vince Vaughn

Freaky Trailer

"Who knows how many of our friends he's going to kill?!" Universal + Blumhouse have debuted a crazy new trailer for Freaky, the clever slasher horror from the creators of Happy Death Day (and Happy Death Day 2U). After swapping bodies with a deranged killer, a young girl in high school discovers she has less than 24 hours before the change becomes permanent. [High school teenager scream!] Starring Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn as the body swappers. With some help from her friends—ultra-woke Nyla (Celeste O'Connor), ultra-fabulous Joshua (Misha Osherovich) and her crush Booker (Uriah Shelton)—Millie races against the clock to reverse the curse while The Butcher discovers that having a female teen body is the perfect cover for a little Homecoming killing spree. The film also stars Alan Ruck, Katie Finneran, and Dana Drori. This is a helluva trailer! The title card slow reveal in this is very cool. This looks like it's going to be as much fun as Happy Death Day and perhaps even more deranged. Opens next month (in theaters). ›››

Make Your Own Island Nation - Official Trailer for 'Rose Island' Film

Rose Island Trailer

"To change the world, you've got to risk a little." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie Italian film titled Rose Island, from filmmaker Sydney Sibilia (of the I Can Quit Whenever I Want series). This reminds me of the UK film Pirate Radio about the ship broadcasting in international waters, or about the party-on-a-homemade-raft experiment examined in the doc The Raft. An idealistic engineer builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world's attention. Values are tested when the Italian government declares him an enemy, but to change the world risks must be taken. This has a more light-hearted, comedic tone to it in addition to its let's-take-on-the-Italian-government boldness. Starring Elio Germano as Giorgio Rosa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Tom Wlaschiha, Luca Zingaretti, François Cluzet, Matilda De Angelis, & Ascanio Balbo. This looks like a good story and a fun film! Take a look. ›››

Studying the Psychology of Killers in Trailer for 'Crazy, Not Insane' Doc

Crazy, Not Insane Doc Trailer

"She was a pioneer. And pioneers are often not treated well." HBO has unveiled an official trailer for yet another new Alex Gibney documentary being released this year - Crazy, Not Insane. This joins the other Alex Gibney doc film also finished this year - Totally Under Control about America's disastrous handling of the pandemic. This Insane documentary originally debuted at the CPH DOX Film Festival, and also stopped by the Venice, Hamptons, and Montclair Film Festivals this fall. It wonders: What makes killers kill? From Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney, Crazy, Not Insane is a provocative look at the minds of violent people, including serial killer Ted Bundy. The doc film examines the research of forensic psychiatrist Dorothy Lewis (aka Dorothy Otnow Lewis) who investigated the psychology of murderers - discovering that they're all afflicted by multiple personalities, better known as dissociative identity disorder (DID) in the psychology world. An utterly fascinating and impressive story that discusses a number of intriguing topics. ›››

First Full Trailer for George Clooney's New Sci-Fi 'The Midnight Sky'

The Midnight Sky Trailer

"Is anyone out there…?" "Does anyone copy…?" Netflix has released an official trailer for The Midnight Sky, a new science fiction film directed by George Clooney - who also stars as a lonely scientist living in the Arctic. The film tells two stories - that of Augustine, the Arctic scientist who makes a discovery but must reach a bigger satellite - which connects directly to the other story of astronauts returning home from a deep space mission. Adapted from the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, telling the story of two outsiders grappling "with love, regret, and survival in a world transformed." This looks like a thrilling and intelligent sci-fi commenting on our hopes and desires for the future, and our failure as human beings to protect this planet. In addition to Clooney, this stars Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir, Sophie Rundle, Ethan Peck, Miriam Shor, and Tiffany Boone. I'm loving the look of this, my kind of sci-fi! Excited to watch it already and lucky we'll all be able to enjoy this in a few months. ›››

US Trailer for Comedy 'Lowdown Dirty Criminals' from New Zealand

Lowdown Dirty Criminals Trailer

"You guys shot the wrong man, didn't you?!" Dark Star Films has debuted a new official US trailer for the New Zealand dark comedy called Lowdown Dirty Criminals, made by filmmaker Paul Murphy (Second Hand Wedding and Love Birds). This already opened in New Zealand & Australia a few months ago, and should make its way to America sooner than later. Two wannabe gangsters find themselves in a hilariously off-kilter predicament when a botched job leaves them the target of the underworld’s finest. It's closest in tone and style to Guy Ritchie's 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, with a Kiwi edge. The film's ensemble cast includes James Rolleston, Samuel Austin, Scott Wills, Min Kim, Cohen Holloway, Robbie Magasiva, and Rebecca Gibney as "uber gangster The Upholsterer". A crime caper that tells the tale of two naïve young men searching for a better life… through crime. Ha ha. This looks like uber zany fun. ›››

Watch: Awesome Mountain Bike Advertising Short 'The Perfect Lap'

The Perfect Lap Short Film

"You ever seen dirt shaped into works of art." This is a killer ad. One of the best commercials of the year, which is why I'm featuring it. Technically it is a short film, but it's made to sell an item – a mountain bike – which also technically makes it an ad. But it's an awesome ad. The Perfect Lap is a promo film directed by Ian Schiller and Dustin Cook of the agency Sabertooth Pictures. It's made for the bike company Specialized to introduce a rad new mountain bike called the Stumpjumper EVO - the 2021 model. It is a special bike designed for fast trail rides and forest tracks specifically. The short's faux-narrative involves two mountain bike pros – Matty Miles & Matt Hunter – and their photographer each discussing their experience riding the "perfect lap" on a golden sunset ride one day, and how it was so perfect that one of them just disappeared forever. He's found again in the year 2063 and interviewed about this glorious day. Above all, the execution here is perfect - every single shot, the comedy, the music, the goofy performances. Everything is just perfect. ›››

Barbie & Kendra Storm Area 51 Trailer

"Remind me to annihilate planet Earth." Full Moon Features has unveiled a trailer for a ridiculous, wacky new sci-fi comedy B-movie called Barbie & Kendra Storm Area 51 - a kind of wacky MST3K homage. Get ready for a heady dose of pandemic panic as the dynamic duo turn on their TV and get tuned into a viral saga that takes them deep into the forbidden fortress of Area 51 and beyond! Damnation 4K Restoration Trailer

"I'd do the basest things to make you choose me." Arbelos Films has unveiled a brand new official trailer for a 4K restoration re-release of a film titled Damnation, originally called Kárhozat in Hungarian. A mid-career masterwork by legendary Hungarian art house auteur Béla Tarr and the first of his internationally acclaimed trilogy of films written in collaboration with author László Krasznahorkai (in addition to the film Sátántangó), Damnation chronicles the doomed affair between bar Titanik regular Karrer (Sátántangó’s Miklós B. Székely) and the cruel cabaret singer (Vali Kerekes) he pines for while scheming to displace her brutish husband (György Cserhalmi). Described as "a poignant Communism allegory that solidified Tarr's unique aesthetic, Damnation is photographed in an exquisitely black & white palette underscored by the mesmerizing long takes that would come to be his trademark." Tarr's Damnation has been restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative by the Hungarian National Film Institute – Film Archive under the supervision of Béla Tarr. It will begin showing at the end of October for anyone interested in watching. ›››

Two friends go on a road trip to the Northwoods of Wisconsin and get more than they bargained for… Starring Ryann Liebl as Mags, and Elisabeth Donaldson as Julie, along with Jeremy Keene, Wes Tank, & Angie Campbell. Watch: Fun Animated Short Film 'Kill Your Idioms' from Grant Kolton

Kill Your Idioms Short Film

"Pennies saved don't add up to much." Everyone loves idioms! Or at least, we love using idioms and tossing them into casual conversations all the time. Kill Your Idioms is a two-minute animated short created by Grant Kolton that riffs on some of the most popular idioms. "You decide, do your idioms live or die in this animated poem?" Kolton takes idioms and turns them back into literal sentences, then animates a scene for each one. It's a sly lesson in English and a way to make you think about the phrases we all use and whether they're actually useful or not. The "killing two birds with one stone is actually harder" scene is the best one because the little chirps from the birds are so cute and yet they're being killed with a stone. Poor little birds. ›››

New Trailer for Steve James' Docu Series 'City So Real' About Chicago

City So Real Doc Series

"A master work of precision and scope." National Geographic has unveiled an official trailer for a new docu series titled City So Real, which will be launching with a special commercial-free, uninterrupted five-hour screening event on TV next week. We're breaking our rules about posting trailers for series because this is the latest work by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Steve James (known for Hoop Dreams, Stevie, The Interrupters, Head Games, Life Itself, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail). James, a Chicago native, profiles the city of Chicago starting from 2018 to 2020 in this five-episode doc series. The main description adds that it's "a fascinating and complex portrait of contemporary Chicago and delivers a deep, multifaceted look into the soul of a quintessentially American city, set against the backdrop of its history-making 2019 mayoral election." James' City So Real is a gritty and loving depiction of a city that is at once fiercely unique and a microcosm of the nation ⎯ and our world ⎯ as a whole. Trailer for Crazy Sci-Fi Sequel 'Skylin3s' Heads to Their Home Planet

Skylin3s Trailer

"We'll have to push beyond our limits." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for sci-fi action sequel Skylin3s (aka Skyline 3), from writer / director Liam O'Donnell and VFX company Hydraulx. In Skyline (2010) the alien invasion began… in Beyond Skyline (2017) the earth fought back… in Skylin3s, the highly anticipated third installment of the hit sci-fi franchise, an elite team heads to the alien's home planet on a final desperate mission to save humanity. Sounds a bit like Starship Troopers, no? When a virus threatens to turn the now earth-dwelling friendly alien hybrids against humans, Captain Rose Corley must lead a team of elite mercs on a mission to Cobalt 1 in order to save what's left of humanity. Starring Lindsey Morgan, Jonathan Howard, Alexander Siddig, and Rhona Mitra. I never did see the previous film, but I will admit these films always look incredible - the VFX are expansive and exciting and it all looks thrilling. But I'm not sure if the rest will be any good. That said, all the shots on the "home planet" are pretty cool. Damn. ›››

Aaron Eckhart is a Private Investigator Gone Mad in 'Wander' Trailer

"We're pinning down the truth." Saban Films has unveiled a trailer for a small town mystery thriller titled Wander, from filmmaker April Mullen. This just premiered at the Deauville Film Festival in France, but that's the only place it has screened. Aaron Eckhart stars as a mentally unstable private detective hired to investigate a suspicious death in the small town of Wander. He soon believes the murder may be linked to the death of his daughter and a "conspiracy cover up". From the looks of it, there may be some truth to this but not everything is what it seems. The film also stars Raymond Cruz, Katheryn Winnick, Heather Graham, Brendan Fehr, Nicole Steinwedell, with Tommy Lee Jones. This looks like so many other dusty small town crime thrillers, but at least Eckhart has a grizzled, unhinged character to dig into this time. ›››
