Calling the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) performance “disastrous”, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said the opposition did not need to do anything to topple the government because it was “capable of self-destruction” owing to the “incompetence of Imran Khan and his associates.”
Prime Minister Imran was interviewed by a panel of senior journalists on Monday, where he spoke about a number of wide-ranging issues including US president Donald Trump’s letter to Pakistan, currency devaluation, Kartarpur corridor, the opposition, and other socioeconomic matters.
The journalists who met him said the premier hinted at the possibility of early elections in the country, and admitted to knowing about the sudden hike in the dollar’s price through news reports.
Expressing her reservations over the prime minister’s suggestion of early elections, Aurangzeb said he does not have confidence in his own government, and hence does not deserve the top office of the country for even one minute.
“It seems the premier has realised that he can’t run the government,” she remarked.
The PML-N spokesperson said that “those who went to jail and suffered [hundreds] of appearances [before the courts] do not need NRO,” adding that the prime minister had once again used the NRO rhetoric to distract the public’s attention from his government’s failures.
“The one he wanted to give NRO to, he has given already, and that is Aleema [Khan],” she lashed out, referring to the ongoing investigation into the assets of Prime Minister Imran’s sister.
Pakistan Peoples Party senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, in a separate statement, said the prime minister’s remarks about early elections were “irresponsible”.
Senator Khokhar, who is also a spokesperson for party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, said such statements would further fuel the air of uncertainty in the country.
Mentioning the recent spike in the dollar, the PPP leader said that if the prime minister was dissatisfied with his government’s performance, he should still not be going around making “irresponsible” statements.
Awami National Party (ANP) leader Mian Ifthikhar Hussain also criticised the premier’s interview, and said that Prime Minister Imran had made it apparent that he was incapable of running the country.
