Dozens of terrified people hid under the tables, the bathroom and even a crawl space in the attic during the shooting on what was a college night for local university students.
One witness told local news he saw the gunman throw smoke bombs before opening fire and shooting and killing the security guard.

"Pop, pop, pop. There was probably three or four, I hit the ground. I look up - the security guard is dead.
"Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot. He was down. The gunman was throwing smoke grenades all over the place.
"I saw him point to the back of the cash register...and he just kept firing. I ran out the front door."
He added that he heard at least 12 gunshots and described the shooter with a beard and wearing a hat, a black jacket and may have had glasses.
He said: "I thought it was a joke when the shots started firing. I know people there. I hope everybody's OK. I don't know how I didn't get shot."
Mr Hodge's stepfather said he was getting ready to leave when he saw smoke come into the room.
He said: "He fired the first shot. I knew it was live. I knew it was real. My son thought it was a joke so I pulled him down and got some cover.
"I looked up and he was moving to the right. He shot the front doorman, who was just a young man.
"Then he shot the cashier, just a young girl. Then he started moving to the right. He wasn't looking at us.
"Then he went into the office, where all the cash and stuff is. He didn't say anything at all. He just started shooting."
Another witness told ABC news how she managed to escape when someone broke a window with their hand so she and friend could crawl through.
At least 11 people have been shot including one police officer and thier conditions are unknown, according to police.
Officers said as soon as gunfire erupted vicitms started running to a nearby petrol station for help.
Afterwards officers began escorting people to safety and found people who had hidden from the gunman.
A deputy yelled at bystanders to get away and said: "Active shooter! Get back!"
Roadways are still blocked in the area.
One witness told ABC 7 he had many friends who were at Borderline that were also survivors of the Route 91 shooting in Las Vegas just over a year ago.
SWAT was pictured trying to secure the scene and parademics were giving CPR to victims outside the bar.
Images from ABC News showed people limping out of the bar with their shirts off.
Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian confirmed the gunman was dead inside the bar, but it has not been confirmed if he shot himself or was shot by police.
He added that there were "hundreds" of people inside the bar when the shooter started firing and said there may be more victims.
Several ambulances were called to the scene to treat multiple victims, according to the Ventura County Star.
The Ventura County Deputies responded to reports of a gunman firing a semi-automatic gun at 11:20pm local time.
When they arrived they said shots were still being fired.
Dozens of officers were called to the scene.
The suspect was originally reported to be in the bar when police arrived.
Officers found a man on the ground at the scene outside a window at the bar, but it is unclear if he is the shooter or a victim or if he had been wounded.
Police reported that a California Highway Patrol had engaged a suspect.
