Venice 2025: Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Bugonia' is Another Clever Mindfck

The always provocative mad genius Yorgos Lanthimos is back again with another movie to mess with our minds! But this one is much more important than his more playful creations. Bugonia is Lanthimos 10th feature film so far - and one of his best yet. It's not as weird or confusing as Dogtooth, and it's not as bizarre or wacky as Poor Things, nor is it as playful or witty as The Favourite. It's actually one of Lanthimos' most direct and accessible films – mainly because the premise is specific, following one path towards an ultimate reveal. Bugonia is Yorgos' clever remake of a Korean movie titled Save the Green Planet! (from 2003). His take on this story is quite similar, following the original script closely with a few changes & tweaks that fit Yorgos' sentiments. First Trailer for Camus Adaptation 'The Stranger' from Francois Ozon

"You carry a burden of sin. You need liberation." The first festival trailer has debuted for the next new film by acclaimed French filmmaker François Ozon, his second film this year following When Fall Is Coming released in the US earlier this year. It's premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival underway this week as one of the Main Competition debuts. Set in 1930s Algeria, the film stars Benjamin Voisin as the apathetic Frenchman Meursault who displays total indifference to life. His emotional detachment leads to a murder, followed by a trial that scrutinizes both the crime and his character. It's an adaptation of the famous Albert Camus novel of the same name (L'Étranger), first published in 1942 by the French philosopher. Ozon states for the record: "It was an immense challenge to adapt a masterpiece that everyone has read and that every reader has already staged in their own mind." This ridiculously cheesy comedy adventure for kids was made and released in 1993, right after the massive success of 3 Ninjas in 1992, so Hollywood went totally crazy on ninja movies for kids. Surf Ninjas is a 1993 comedic family film involving martial arts, that follows two teenage surfers from Los Angeles who discover that they are crown princes of the Asian kingdom Patusan and reluctantly follow their destinies to dethrone an evil colonel that rules over the kingdom. It is directed by Neal Israel and written by Dan Gordon. The movie stars Ernie Reyes Jr. (who was also in The Last Dragon and Rush Hour 2), Rob Schneider, Nicolas Cowan, and Leslie Nielsen as the bad guy Colonel Chi. Surf Ninjas was filmed in Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Thailand. A video game was also developed and released in conjunction with the film. "Hello, Carol. We'll put things right..." Apple TV has unveiled a second 30-second teaser for the new series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan titled simply Pluribus. They're slowly building up early buzz until a full trailer reveal and we can find out what's really going down. This next teaser doesn't explain or reveal anything either – and includes the viral phone number you can contact as well (202-808-3981). The sci-fi drama series is titled Pluribus - the Latin word is an adjective that means "much, many" (commonly used in the U.S. slogan "E pluribus unum"). The only one-line intro available so far to setup the concpet: The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness. Pluribus stars Rhea Seehorn (who was in Gilligan's "Better Call Saul") along with Carlos Manuel Vesga, Karolina Wydra, Miriam Shor, and Samba Schutte. It still seems like this will turn out similar to something like Apple TV's other sci-fi show Severance rather than their series Foundation (one of my faves) in terms of the sci-fi aspects of it. The story is about a couple escaping on a romantic weekend at a secluded cabin. When Malcolm suddenly returns to the city, Liz finds herself alone in the presence of an evil revealing the cabin's horrifying secrets.
