New Civil War Thriller 'All the Lost Ones' Trailer with Jasmine Mathews
"We have a chance... if we can get out." Epic Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie thriller from Canada called All the Lost Ones, made by filmmaker Mackenzie Donaldson. This premiered at a few film festivals up in Canada last year, and it will be out to watch on VOD in the US later in April - if anyone is curious to watch. "The fight for tomorrow begins..." A future civil war (in dystopian America 🇺🇸) is sparked by government-imposed measures due to climate change. Nia, her sister Penny, and her boyfriend Ethan are hiding out when a militia leader and his followers arrive on their doorstep. A group hiding out in a remote cabin is hunted by a rebel militia, forced into a brutal fight for survival. Starring Jasmine Mathews as Nia, Vinessa Antoine as Penny, with Devon Sawa, Steven Ogg, Douglas Smith, Sheila McCarthy, Lochlyn Munro, and Anthony Grant. This ain't Alex Garland's Civil War, but it does look like it has just as much brutal violence and shootouts anyway. For better or worse... Not sure this is good enough to watch. // Continue Reading ›

Charming Cast Featurette for 'The Wedding Banquet' Group Comedy
"It starts with love, it gets into trouble because of love, and ends for love." Bleecker Street has debuted a charming featurette for the ensemble comedy The Wedding Banquet, a brand new modern day remake of the 1993 Ang Lee movie of the same name. Arriving in theaters this April! Go watch it! This time the story features four people living together in one house: two gay men and two lesbian women in relationships. Korean Min makes a deal with his lesbian friend: a green-card marriage for him, in exchange for costly IVF treatments for her. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min's skeptical grandmother flies in right from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza. Starring Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Bobo Le, Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, this fresh reimagining of Ang Lee’s beloved, rom-com teems with humor & heart in a poignant reminder that being part of a family means learning to both accept & forgive. This premiered at the 2025 Sundance Festival in January earlier this year. In my glowing review I wrote that "I laughed, I cried, I smile, I cheered, I wiped away tears." One Final Trailer for Very Unique 'Seneca' Film Starring John Malkovich
"I did it for Rome." Freestyle Digital Media has debuted their official trailer for the film Seneca, made by director Robert Schwentke who worked in Hollywood for years (he last made Snake Eyes before this). The full title is actually Seneca - On the Creation of Earthquakes - this first premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival a few years ago and opened in Germany that year. But most critics hated it and reviews have been harsh. It's about the relationship between Seneca and Nero, the infamous Emperor he mentored since childhood and who accused him of plotting his assassination. The plot revolves around Nero telling him to kill himself and Seneca's response to this directive. "Schwentke has made a pyrotechnic display of a film that is almost peerless in its use of over-the-top punchlines, splatter-sarcasm, love of verbal precocity. Stunning & incredibly topical, Seneca asks: is the educated elite a victim of tyranny or an opportunistic collaborator? The time is indeed ripe for political allegories." John Malkovich stars as the intellectual Italian stoic philosopher in Ancient Rome, with a cast including Tom Xander, Geraldine Chaplin, Louis Hofmann, and Lilith Stangenberg. Most people won't be into this film, but I saw it and appreciated how it's an angry outburst against the greed & nonsense within Ancient Rome (acting as a metaphor for everything now, too). // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Henry Fonda for President' Doc on America's Past
"I'm more of a radical, and a rebel, most of the time politically." The Film Desk has revealed the trailer for an essay documentary called Henry Fonda for President, from an Austrian filmmaker named Alexander Horwath. This premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival last year and opens in the US at the Anthology FIlm Archives starting in April if anyone is interested in watching. Horwath is a film scholar, historian, and curator from Austria directing his first film. Henry Fonda for President is a 3-hour-long unconventional doc about the famous actor Henry Fonda (1905-1982). Fonda's life, roles, and last 1981 interview voice narrate a journey across America's history from 1651 to the 1980s presidency era (a great deal of time to cover), personifying the nation's complexities through a road trip from Fonda, NY right to the Pacific. They add: "Equally adept at cultural criticism, historical accounting, and political analysis, Henry Fonda for President also incorporates elements of found-footage filmmaking and landscape cinema, as it combines a wide array of revelatory archival material (including film & TV clips, Fonda's final 1981 interview, news reports, and more) with Horwath's own footage of sites throughout the US." Not sure this will be that engaging to watch unless you're very seriously into American history and politics. But have a look at some doc footage anyway. // Continue Reading ›

Offbeat Japanese Film 'Desert of Namibia' Trailer Starring Yumi Kawai
"Am I pretty?" Kani Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for a Japanese indie film titled Desert of Namibia, the second feature made by young Japanese filmmaker Yoko Yamanaka. This first premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar section, and it will be playing in US art house theaters starting this May – one year later. The film stars Yumi Kawai as 21-year-old Satsuki – she swaps boyfriends frequently, unconcerned with career or societal norms. Her unpredictable behavior leads to a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder, as she navigates a rigid, patriarchal society. Described in one review as: "Elusive, Desert of Namibia is an ultra-melancholic slapstick comedy, a slow-burn vaudeville, a fantasy film without monsters or ghosts–or else entirely populated by monsters and ghosts, but with a seemingly everyday quality..." And it also "masterfully conveys the chaos and disarray of a young woman at odds with the world as much as with herself." In addition to Kawai, the film stars Keisuke Horibe, Daichi Kaneko, Kanichiro, Yuzumi Shintani, Makiko Watanabe, and Erika Karata. This is definitely worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer for Infamous Western 'Rust' - The Film Where the DP Was Killed
"Some things in this life you can't get back..." Falling Forward Films & Ascending Media Group revealed the first trailer for the western action thriller Rust, directed by Joel Souza. Unfortunately this is the film where the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed while on set from a prop gun loaded with a live round. After the incident, they decided to come together and finish filming anyway, and now it's ready to be released. In Rust, a boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following their parents' deaths in 1880s Kansas, ends up on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he is sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher. Featuring Alec Baldwin, Frances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, Travis Fimmel, Patrick Scott McDermott, Devon Werkheiser, Rhys Coiro, Xander Berkeley, and Jake Busey. During filming in 2021, Baldwin's gun discharged and struck Hutchins and Souza, killing Hutchins. A few years later filming resumed and the finished film premiered at the Camerimage Film Festival last year (the fest focuses on cinematography so it was a premiere in honor of Hutchins). This whole tragic incident still bothers & saddens me so I must say I have no interest in ever watching this. It should've been canned. // Continue Reading ›

Aaron Blaise's Homemade Animated Short 'Snow Bear' Official Trailer
"You don't have to be alone." There's a trailer available for a lovely new animated short film called Snow Bear, made by animation veteran Aaron Blaise as his own personal project. The short recently premiered at a film festival in The Netherlands and will eventually be released online this year - hopefully not too long of a wait. Blaise worked as an animation supervisor for Disney for decades, including on films like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, and many others. He also directed the animated feature film Brother Bear in 2006 but then moved on from Disney movies and Hollywood work. This 2D hand-drawn film was painstakingly created entirely by Blaise over 3 years – it's made entirely by him in his own spare time. With his lifelong dedication to studying, drawing & animating animals, this adventure is infused with humor, relatability, and emotional depth in the tradition of classic animated films. It's a charming story of a bear who makes a new friend. Yep this looks adorable and I can't wait to see the entire short sometime soon. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Rock Band Doc 'Pavements' from Alex Ross Perry
"We were big on MTV!" Utopia has revealed an official trailer for the film Pavements, the latest creation from NYC indie filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. This is sort of a documentary, or not, more of a mockumentary, but it's also kind of real, and kind of a fictional film. Does this band actually exist? Is this doc about their return or about them not being a real band? Who knows? Pavements is a doc film about the American indie band Pavement, which combines scripts with images of the band & a musical mise-en-scene composed of songs from their discography. It's a prismatic, narrative, scripted, musical, metatextual hybrid. Showing the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum about their history, and a big-budget Hollywood biopic. Anchored by Pavement's slacker-sage-sphinx, Stephen Malkmus, the film features actors Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Kathryn Gallagher, Michael Esper, Nat Wolff, and Zoe Lister-Jones, with editing by nonfiction innovator Robert Greene (Procession). I first saw this film in Venice last year and pretty much hated it - a very unfunny waste of time. But others may find more to enjoy watching this band mess around. // Continue Reading ›

From filmmaker Jesse Vile, the 3-part doc series will be streaming on Netflix in April. A stranger-than-fiction crime caper follows the attempted robbery of a famous diamond, told by the gangsters who did it and the police on their tail. Their plan: use a bulldozer to break into the Millennium Dome in broad daylight, steal the world's second biggest flawless diamond, worth £200 million, and escape by speedboat on the Thames. Apple has unveiled their exciting 5-minute music video / promo spot for their AirPods 4 (the 4th generation AirPods featuring Active Noise Cancellation - they're actually damn good). Yes it's just a big commercial, but it's also so much fun to watch, and it's always exciting whenever a brand new Spike Jonze creation drops (this one with Dick Van Dyke is wonderful). Someday is a AirPods commercial starring Pedro Pascal, who walks out onto a freezing cold, icicle-covered street. As soon as he pops shiny white AirPods into his ears, everything turns bright and colorful, and the street is suddenly full of flowers everywhere. 💐 He goes off dancing down the street, interacting with everyone, because the world's better with AirPods in. And that's about it! Maybe one day soon we'll see another new Spike Jonze movie? Because we really, really need one... He's still got it. // Continue Reading ›

Wild Promo Trailer for 'Reflection in a Dead Diamond' French Fantasy
💎 Cineart has revealed the first trailer for a crazy trippy, avant garde film from France titled Reflection in a Dead Diamond, the latest from filmmaking duo Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani. This recently premiered at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival in the Main Competition. It's the latest from the filmmakers who also made The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears and Let the Corpses Tan, for anyone into wacky, abstract cinema. Filmed on the Côte d’Azur in France, a retired spy suspects his former adversaries have resurfaced when his intriguing neighbor vanishes. It's a peculiar, twisted, heady film featuring all kinds of things going on - mysterious women clad in all black leather, diamond thieves, lots of beautiful shots of the Mediterranean, a woman brandishing a very nice sword, and much more. Starring Fabio Testi, Yannick Renier, Koen De Bouw, Maria de Medeiros, and Thi Mai. There's no dialogue in this trailer so no worries, it's all about the visuals anyway. Is this a classic case of art house style over substance or is there something more here? Reviews explain it's not about the story, it's "an homage to and a deconstruction of genre, layering its self-reflexive and meta-textual dimensions to examine the fluidity of identity, memory, and sanity." Serial Killer Horror Thriller 'Ed Kemper' Trailer Starring Lew Temple
"All I want... is for you to be proud of me." Dread has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Ed Kemper, a story about the serial killer named Ed Kemper, Jr. This is set for release in April in a few theaters and on VOD if anyone is interested. The only thing that sells now is true crime and murder mysteries! This is the chilling true story of Ed Kemper, a manipulative serial killer whose charm hid a dark obsession with murder, revenge, and his tormented past. Based on actual events surrounding the American serial killer Edmund Kemper, who murdered his grandparents at age 15 and, after being paroled for that crime, then killed eight women in 1972 and 1973 including his own mother. Scary. Also known as the "Co-ed killer", don't confuse Kemper with Ed Gein (who inspired Hitchcock's Psycho) this is a different guy. Writer Stephen Johnston explains: "I originally envisioned Ed Kemper as having a sort of punk rock horror energy, and seeing that realized by Chad Ferrin’s sure-handed direction, deft performances from the cast, and the hard work of a great crew... has truly been magical. Sure, it's a disturbing sort of magical, but that’s the best kind." Ed Kemper features Lew Temple, Cassandra Gava, Robert Miano, Brinke Stevens, Susan Priver, and Brandon Kirk. 'Stan Lee: The Final Chapter' Doc Trailer About How He Was Exploited
"This isn't speculation, it's all on camera... Undeniable. Irrefutable. No ambiguity." Well, this is extremely sad... I hope this film makes a difference. An official trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled Stan Lee: The Final Chapter, directed by Jon Bolerjack. The film shows how Lee was used to generate revenue at convention appearances, as autographed memorabilia and photo ops brought in large sums of money — most of which was "never to be seen by Lee or his family." Bolerjack ended up working as one of Stan Lee's assistants during his final years before he passed away in 2018 at the age of 95. It's a classic case of elder abuse and manipulation and rotten exploitation all for other's wealth. "As one of Lee's assistants, Bolerjack accompanied Lee & Lee's entourage to numerous events & shot several hundred hours of video... [filming] his closest confidants, including several who exploited Lee's declining health and age." This is the complete opposite of Disney's doc titled literally just Stan Lee from 2023. This tells the shocking truth about how he was unethically taken advantage of as the Marvel comics legend, and how greed really is one of the greatest evils. Comic book fans must see this – and Bolerjack is also asking for Kickstarter funding during this year. // Continue Reading ›
