Watch: Entrancing Short 'Sit Down, Don't Touch Anything' on Creativity
Do you sometimes struggle with creativity? How do you motivate and inspire yourself (again) when you're out of energy to create? The latest short film creation from Swiss animation filmmaker Frederic Siegel is this 5-minute film titled Sit Down, Don't Touch Anything. It's an entrancing, hypnotic short about the creative process inspired, of course, by Frederic's own challenges with creativity. "I worked on [this film for] the last two years more or less in complete secrecy during the pandemic. I started with experimenting on new, weird styles and ended up with a weird 5-minute, experimental short." No other intro is needed, just click play on the video, turn up the volume, enter full screen – and enjoy. Frederic also works with a Swiss animation design studio called Team Tumult and they've made some awesome shorts in the past (highly recommend The Lonely Orbit). This new one is a solo short but still as mesmerizing as ever. Dive in below. // Continue Reading ›

Rock History Doc 'Revival69: The Concert That Rocked the World' Trailer
"Combination of people on the stage is, without question, historic." Greenwich Entertainment has revealed the official US trailer for a music history documentary film titled Revival69: The Concert That Rocked the World, about the iconic 1969 Toronto Rock 'n Roll Revival music festival. Yet another music doc telling the story of "how it happened!" by looking back at how it almost didn't happen (just like The Greatest Night in Pop, etc). John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Little Richard, The Doors, Chuck Berry, Alice Cooper, and other legendary musicians performed at the 1969 Toronto Rock and Roll Revival music festival. This behind-the-scenes look at "the second most important event in rock and roll history" culminates in John Lennon's very first public performance with The Plastic Ono Band, integral in triggering his decision to leave the Beatles. Forged with rare, recently discovered behind-the-scenes Super 8 verité footage, and including never-before seen 16mm film of the concert shot by D.A. Pennebaker and his crew, Revival69 is an exhilarating VIP ride into a pivotal moment in music history, told through the eyes of those who were there: the musicians, the mavericks behind the scenes, and all who witnessed history in the making. What an epic concert! Have fun. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for The Beatles' Original 1970 Film 'Let It Be' Restored
"At last..." They're back again! Disney+ has revealed the main official trailer for a restored re-release of The Beatles classic 1970 film Let It Be, a music documentary about their last performance. This is a follow-up to Peter Jackson's acclaimed docu-series The Beatles: Get Back, which debuted streaming back in 2021 during the pandemic. Jackson took a lot of footage, re-edited it, and presented it exactly as it was shot to return everyone to 1969/1970 when the band was at the end of their time. This doc film re-release also does the same, with even more footage that wasn't in the Get Back series. Let It Be is the filmed account of The Beatles' attempt to recapture their old group spirit by making a back to basics album, which instead drove them further apart. With director Michael Lindsay-Hogg's full support, Apple Corps asked Jackson's Park Road Post Production to dive into a meticulous restoration of the film from the original 16mm negative, which included lovingly remastering the sound using the same MAL de-mix technology that was applied to the Get Back docuseries. It will be available for streaming in a few weeks on D+. Check out the fresh footage. // Continue Reading ›

First Look Teaser for 'Senna' Series Starring Gabriel Leone as the Driver
"I refuse to walk away from the fight." Netflix has revealed a teaser for the series Senna, a dramatized version of the story of famed Formula 1 race car driver Ayrton Senna. This is a biopic about the Brazilian racer and his legacy, including all of his victories and everything he achieved on and off the track. In this first teaser video for Senna, the limited series premiering in late 2024, we see the recreation of Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna's historic victory, including the narration of Galvão Bueno, at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, following a challenging race where he was mostly stuck in sixth gear and also marking the first time he won in his hometown of Sao Paulo. We also see possible thoughts and experiences, interspersed with images of the race, that led Ayrton, played by Gabriel Leone, to this point in his career in addition to some iconic characters who were a part of his life that year: Xuxa (Pâmela Tomé), Alain Prost (Matt Mella) and the McLaren racing team principal, Ron Dennis (Patrick Kennedy) as well as Galvão Bueno (Gabriel Louchard). Many will remember the excellent doc film called Senna about him, now we have a series as well. This is an amazing teaser! Riveting and thrilling - yeah I'm sold on this right away. Classic Trailer Rewatch: Ron Howard's True Story Thriller 'Apollo 13'
"Houston, we have a problem." This is easily one of my all-time favorite space movies. Ron Howard's docu-drama thriller Apollo 13 first opened in theaters in the summer of 1995, celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. The old 35mm trailer scanner YouTube recently posted a crisp 2160p scan of the original Apollo 13 trailer. Though this actually plays more like a teaser, setting up the story and stakes and characters without showing too much (the full trailer is also available right below it). In this movie based on a true story, NASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 (which launched in April 1970) to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy. Starring Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell, Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert, Bill Paxton Fred Haise, and Ed Harris on the ground as Flight Director Gene Kranz. One of the most nerve-wracking survival movies ever, perfectly shot by Howard and his DP Dean Cundey to make it all feel so real, as if the actors were really up there in this tiny spacecraft. The score by James Horner is also an all-timer. What a stupendous movie - a real classic. // Continue Reading ›

One-Man Band Tours the Deep South in 'American Mileage' Doc Trailer
"I'm not going to have any stories if I don't go out there and explore and do things." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie documentary film titled American Mileage, made by filmmaker Tim Hardiman. As far as we can tell, this hasn't played at any festivals since being finished, but it will be out to watch on VOD at the end of May coming up soon this summer. UK internet sensation Cam Cole (follow him @mrcamcole) takes his one-man rock show across the Atlantic for his very first US tour. Traveling solo in a shabby RV, Cam ventures the American South to explore the roots of the music that shaped him. Cam not only discovers the roots of his influences, but also finds that America isn’t quite what he expected it be. Along the way he performs with Delta Blues icons Bobby Rush, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, and R.L. Boyce. He returns to the UK with a deeper understanding of not only his musical influences, but also the spirit of the American people. This actually looks pretty good, a story about learning to be humble in the face of success. // Continue Reading ›

First Teaser Trailer for Barry Jenkins' 'Mufasa: The Lion King' Prequel
"The earth will shake... destiny awaits you." Disney has unveiled the teaser trailer for the Mufasa: The Lion King movie, from director Barry Jenkins (of Moonlight & If Beale Street Could Talk) jumping into the world of Disney for his next story. The prequel about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, returns to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara about her grandfather. Told with flashbacks, we're introduced to Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost & alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny. With the voices of Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Kani as Rafiki. Plus a big ensemble cast: Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Thandiwe Newton, Mads Mikkelsen, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, John Kani, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, and introducing Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, daughter of King Simba & Queen Nala. Alas, this looks as dull and redundant as expected. I'm not really looking forward to watching this. Is anyone? 🦁 "A lion who would change our lives forever." // Continue Reading ›

Classic Trailer Rewatch: Wolfgang Petersen's 'The NeverEnding Story'
"What magical spell does it cast on all who read it? What is the secret of The NeverEnding Story?" This unforgettably fantasy adventure movie originally opened in theaters in West German in April 1984 - a full 40 years ago this month. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, and for a look back at a classic trailer that has re-appeared online, enjoy these previews for Wolfgang Petersen's classic The NeverEnding Story. In this big screen adventure, a troubled boy dives into a wondrous fantasy world through the pages of a book. He ends up journeying through strange lands, encountering all kinds of creatures both kind & evil, making some friends & enemies along the way. Barret Oliver stars as Bastian, with Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, Tami Stronach as the "Moon Child", plus Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney, and Moses Gunn. If you grew up in the 80s or 90s like me, you have seen this movie many times, but the young generations of today may not be familiar with it. There are some clunky practical effects, but there are also some creatures that seem so real it's hard to forget them - like the giant flying dog known as Falkor. It's fun to look back at how Hollywood used to promote new releases. This is "for anyone who's ever made a wish." // Continue Reading ›

"I don't demand much, my life is drifting away..." If you'd like to prevent your life from drifting away, you need to stop and take 14 minutes to enjoy this. You won't be the same after. The Burden is a Swedish stop-motion animated short film musical from filmmaker Niki Lindroth von Bahr. It originally premiered back in 2017 and played at almost every major festival - Cannes, TIFF, Sundance, Annecy, Fantastic Fest, and many others. Watch: Siri Makes People Dance in 'Synthetic Pleasures' Short Film
"Imagine, we are all living inside of a cave. Unable to life our heads. To see. To feel, anything. Now watch, as we are set free." Is it technology setting us free, or are we freeing ourselves from technology? Nowadays the latter seems more important. This experimental short film titled Synthetic Pleasures is the creation of filmmaker Stuart Langfield. It was originally made as the main title film for OFFF Barcelona 2024 held earlier in April - OFFF is "global platform for the creative industry that sets the trends in design, art & post-digital culture." The short offers a different take on "the robot uprising, imagining a world in which our digital assistants like Siri and Alexa leave the confines of their devices and take some human bodies for a joyride, just to feel something, to be human for a minute." The result of this joyride is a selection of people dancing & moving in weird ways, which is fun for a minute until the little colorful bubbles head off to watch the sunset. This is a bit too abstract to really land, but I do like the visuals and locations. Check it out below. // Continue Reading ›

He is known as "the country's first major Black filmmaker," who made many films from the 1920s onward that redefined what cinema could be and who it was for. Full Trailer for Distant Future A.I. Sci-Fi 'Atlas' Starring Jennifer Lopez
"My primary protocol is to keep you alive." Netflix has launched an official trailer for a sci-fi action movie called Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez. Arriving to watch this May – it's yet another star-driven expensive spectacle that will be streaming this summer. Also another artificial intelligence-related sci-fi movie, since it's the big tech trend of the moment, there have to be movies about it. Atlas is set in a bleak future, where an A.I. soldier has determined that the only way to end war is to end humanity. Lopez plays a data analyst with a deep distrust of A.I., who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot. When plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it. Co-starring Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, & Mark Strong. From the looks of it, this seems like pro-A.I. propaganda disguised as a sci-fi movie. The Creator isn't the same, this seems rather blatant in its message that she must "trust" the A.I. Unfortunately this looks way too cheesy to be any good, especially with JLo's performance in this mech suit, but I'm sure it'll be a streaming hit anyway. Take a look. // Continue Reading ›

"I don't know anything about saving worlds, but you do!" Lock & load, everyone!! Marvel + 20th Century have revealed the second official trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine, formerly known as Deadpool 3, the latest in his foul-mouthed, absurdly bonkers comic book movie comedy series. It's time for the infamous Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, to mess up the MCU by getting his tricky little fingers all over this superhero-filled multiverse. Even though this is technically Deadpool 3, he's diving full on into the whole franchise and bringing Wolverine along with him to mess around with the past (and future). Ryan Reynolds stars once again as Wade Wilson / Deadpool alongside Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine, and a cast featuring Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Shioli Kutsuna, Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams, & Jennifer Garner. There are some hilarious scenes in this trailer, which is more fo a smattering of the funniest moments they could show in a trailer than a preview setting up the story in this movie. I laughed out loud watching all this! Looks hilarious! I'm definitely in. What about you? // Continue Reading ›

New Trailer for Doc 'H2: The Occupation Lab' About a Palestinian City
"As a Palestinian here, I don't exist." Film Movement has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled H2: The Occupation Lab, from filmmakers Idit Avrahami & Noam Sheizaf. It was originally made and finished in 2022 before the current Israel-Palestine war broke out. It premiered in 2022 at the Docaviv Film Festival in Israel, and will be relased in the US sometime this year. H2 is the name given to the eastern part of Hebron - the only Palestinian city with a Jewish settlement in it. Here, along a one-Kilometer road, lies the holy Tomb of the Patriarchs, where both Jews & Muslims believe their common father, Abraham, is buried. This is also where the massacre of 1929, known as "year zero" of the conflict, took place; where the Jewish settlement movement was born, and where the policy of ethnic separation was first implemented by the military. With rare archive footage as well as interviews with Hebron's military commanders and locals, H2: The Occupation Lab tells the story of a place that is both a microcosm of the entire conflict and a test site for the methods of control Israel is implementing throughout the West Bank. This is another honest, clear-eyed look at what's really going on in Palestine and how Israel occupation is the more serious danger. // Continue Reading ›

Another official trailer is available to watch for this kooky and crazy Japanese horror film called Lumberjack the Monster, based on the novel of the same name. Watch: 'Creating Things' Short Doc Film Examining a Father's Legacy
"Things that I create will hopefully live beyond my life." What kind of legacy will you leave? Will there be anyone to celebrate that legacy, to make sure it leaves a last impression? This wonderful, wholesome short film is a exercise in extending that legacy. Creating Things is a 10-minute short doc made by the brothers Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson, telling the story of their dad Roger Simpson - a beautiful artist with a creative mind. "Our friend Peter Lyngso revealed to us that he had filmed an interview with our Dad after his cancer diagnosis a couple years earlier. Upon watching the interview we learned new things about our Dad. It also reaffirmed things about him, most important of which was his passion for creating. This became an excuse to discover and rediscover our Dad's art, photos, and other mementos to create this film. The process has been a cathartic labor of love and the final piece is not only a visual eulogy to our Dad, but a visual ode to creating." Nick Stahl Stars in a Twisted Chef Thriller 'What You Wish For' Trailer
"A bad dish from you and your life will end." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for What You Wish For, an indie thriller from filmmaker Nicholas Tomnay, a follow-up to his first film The Perfect Host. This new one premiered at many genre fests: Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, FrightFest, A Night of Horror, Grimmfest, Celluloid Screams, and Screamfest previously before its upcoming release in theaters this May during the start of the summer. A down-on-his-luck chef with gambling problems flees to a Latin American villa, where he assumes the identity of another skilled chef. "A Hitchcockian, edge-of-your-seat descent into escalating moral compromise with generous servings of dark humour, shock, and surprise." The title is an obvious riff on the "be careful what you wish for" idiom, as the full synopsis hints that he "soon discovers just what Jack's been doing to maintain the lifestyle he so desperately craved." Uh oh. Starring Nick Stahl as Ryan, with Tamsin Topolski, Randy Vasquez, Penelope Mitchell, Juan Carlos Messier, Ariel Sierra, & Brian Groh. Yeah this looks crazy and unsettling. I dig that final line: "Make the dessert, Jack." // Continue Reading ›

Festival Trailer for Miguel Gomes' 'Grand Tour' - Premiering in Cannes
"I've been running away from her like a coward." The Match Factory has revealed a first look trailer for a Portuguese film set in Asia premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival next month. This new film is called Grand Tour, and it's the latest feature by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes, best known for his films Tabu (2012), The Tsugua Diaries (2021), and his Arabian Nights trilogy (2015). Grand Tour was already announced as part of the prestigious Competition at Cannes 2024 this year, which is a big deal for a film like this. Edward, civil servant, flees fiancee Molly on their wedding day in Rangoon, Burma, in 1917. His travels replace panic with melancholy. Molly, set on marriage and amused by his escape, trails him across Asia. The film stars Gonçalo Waddington & Crista Alfaiate. Variety says it features a mix of "narrative sequences shot in a studio [which are] intercut with footage of contemporary Asia." It is a tragicomedy though also "melancholic and courageous." This is a rather wacky trailer, starting out with somber B&W footage then cutting into cheesy flashes of dancing, puppets, & more. Definitely looks like an acquired taste kind of film. // Continue Reading ›

Danish Mystery Sequel 'Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever' New Trailer
"Isn't that Wörmer's signature?" Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for the Danish horror mystery sequel Nightwatch 2, known as Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, from the same Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Not to be confused with the two Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, this is not related - it's a new sequel to Bornedal's 1994 movie Nightwatch, which was remade into Nightwatch in 1997 with Ewan McGregor. The original also starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has become considerably more famous after "Game of Thrones". In this sequel, Martin's daughter, Emma, takes up a night watch job to find out what happened to her parents almost thirty years ago. A meeting with Wörmer in his cell pulls the serial killer out of his coma and sets in motion a chain of fateful events. Starring Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, Sonja Richter, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Paprika Steen, and Nina Rask. Freaky!! Watch: 'Cosmohedron' - Interconnected Psychotropic Animated Short
How interconnected is everything? From atoms and cells and tiny molecules to galaxies and black holes - it's all connected through space and time and relativity. This overwhelming concept explored in this amusing, psychedelic, mind-melting animated short film. Cosmohedron is created by the Boston-based animator / illustrator Duncan Hatch, who is known for this very hallucinogenic style. There's not much of an intro to it because not much needs to be said: "A surreal journey through the interconnections between all things." Including aliens and other weird creatures, not just humans! Just as Christopher Nolan wrote into the Tenet script: "Don't try to understand it, just feel it." Indeed. That's the best way to watch this one. I'm a big fan of these kind of mesmerizing, trippy animated creations and enjoy featuring them in our Short Film section. Take a Closer Look: 7 Film References in Pablo Berger's 'Robot Dreams'
Did you spot all the references? Can you always notice them all? Madman Films has debuted a wonderful new promo video for the beloved animated film Robot Dreams, which first premiered at the 2023 Cannes & Annecy Film Festivals last year. The film also snuck in and ended up nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2024 Academy Awards earlier this year, but it didn't win. This fun 60-second video examines references in this movie that are inspired by other shots & scenes in other classic movies - including from Manhattan, The Wizard of Oz, The Big Lebowski, and Psycho. A story about friendship, its importance, and its fragility. The dialogue-free animated film is based on the popular graphic novel by Sara Varon, about the adventures and misfortunes of Dog and Robot in NYC during the '80s. Dog is lonely so he orders a Robot companion, but then Robot gets stuck in the sand at the beach one day. I wrote a glowing review of this out of Cannes last year. Neon has finally scheduled Robot Dreams to open in US theaters May 2024, but we're still waiting for their full trailer to drop (here's the teaser).
