Watch: Behind-the-Scenes of the Special FX in Tim Burton's 'Big Fish'

Big Fish Behind-the-Scenes
"It was that night I discovered that most things you consider evil or wicked are simply lonely, and lacking in the social niceties." One of my personal favorite Tim Burton movies is Big Fish, the 2003 story of a man and his father and a fish. Among many other creatures. The legendary Stan Winston and his team at Stan Winston Studio were once again hired by Tim Burton to create a handful of special effects for Big Fish (we also posted their video on creating The Penguin for Burton's Batman Returns). As everyone knows, Winston is one of the best in the business, and his work is always exciting to see. The S.W. School of Character Arts website has posted another interesting making of look at their behind-the-scenes process, featuring many photos & videos of their creature creations. The video covers the werewolf, the lion, Helena Bonham Carter's Swamp Witch, and the titular Big Fish from the end, plus a few other glimpses. This takes me way back as I remember being obsessed with this movie, watching it many times. Another fascinating video for SFX geeks. // Continue Reading ›

"You're mistaking dreams for memories..." "These aren't dreams." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for the film State of Consciousness, a mysterious psychological thriller from filmmaker Marcus Stokes. This already premiered at a film festival in Italy a few years ago and was released in Italy last year, though is only now opening in the US - starting in March for those curious. New US Trailer for Buckley & Colman's Comedy 'Wicked Little Letters'

Wicked Little Letters Trailer
"It's time you owned up to these letters!" Sony Pictures Classics has revealed a new official US trailer for a British comedy called Wicked Little Letters, described as a "scandalously sweary" film from filmmaker Thea Sharrock (Me Before You and The One & Only Ivan). This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and now has US release dates set - in NY & LA on March 29th and nationwide on April 5th this spring. Small town. Big mystery. Bad language. When people in Littlehampton - including conservative local Edith - begin to receive letters full of hilariously harsh profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting something is amiss, the town's women investigate. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley star as Edith and Rose, respectively, with Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, and Anjana Vasan. This does look hilarious! Reviews from TIFF praise the film saying: "The central pairing of Buckley and Colman is clearly the swear-off of the century, like a home-counties rumble in the jungle, but Wicked Little Letters has just as much else to recommend it." I'm so in for this! Check out the trailer below. // Continue Reading ›

Hulu Trailer for 'Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story' Doc Film

Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story Trailer
"Many of our young people, they're searching for their place in the world. They want to be seen." Hulu has revealed an official trailer for one of their Black History Month offerings in February - a documentary film titled Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story, about one of America's oldest historically Black boarding schools. Directed by J.J. Anderson, this film is a co-production with Andscape, which is Disney and ESPN's Black-led division. It will be out to watch on Hulu later in February. Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story explores the intersection of childhood and adulthood through the eyes of young, Black high school youth from around the world as they work beyond society's imposed limitations to achieve a top-notch education at America's oldest African-American boarding school. The President of Piney Woods gave this comment: "We are deeply grateful to J.J. Anderson and Andscape for bringing the Piney Woods story to audiences in such a powerful way. For 115 years, our work has consistently pursued a mission to prepare future leaders by empowering learners – head, hands, and heart." Looks quite good! Very cinematic. // Continue Reading ›

Funky Official Trailer for Stoned Kung Fu Movie 'The Smoke Master'

The Smoke Master Trailer
"I taught you everything I know." Freestyle Digital Media has released this film in the US for home viewing. The Smoke Master is a "Stoned Kung-Fu movie" from Brazil, the first "Cannibas-infused kung fu movie" according to their them. This initially premired at a Brazilian genre film festival back in 2022, and opened there last year. It's also now available to watch on VOD in the US if anyone wants to light up and have a good time with a fun martial arts comedy. Two brothers and a fistful of friends have to face the Chinese mafia "Three Generations Revenge." Counting on The Smoke Master and his unique Cannabis fighting style, they stand a chance. "This Brazilian production [has] all the elements of an epic film and an unusual mix of genres. It is an action film, with emphasis on Kung Fu, inspired by the Hong Kong cinema of the 60s, and at the same time, it is a stoner movie comedy based on American films from the 70s to 90s." Starring Daniel Rocha, Tony Lee, and Thiago Stechinni. As always with martial arts, I hope there are some good fights. // Continue Reading ›

Groovy New Trailer for 'The Invisible Fight' - Kung Fu Monks Comedy

The Invisible Fight Trailer
"I'm going to be a monk." Kino Lorber has unveiled their official US trailer for the Estonian film known as The Invisible Fight, a martial arts comedy made by Estonian filmmaker Rainer Sarnet (also of the cult hit November). This is finally set to open in US theaters in February, starting at the Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan, with more cities to follow throughout March. It premiered at Locarno and played at Fantastic Fest and Sitges (where I caught up with it). The Invisible Fight is described as a satirical take on the martial arts film, artfully paying tribute to the genre's Chinese wuxia roots. Set in the 1970s, it's about an Estonian guard on the Soviet-Chinese border who, after surviving and watching a deadly attack, decides to become a monk but must continually prove along the way that he's capable of becoming the enlightened man that he set out to be. Starring Ursel Tilk as Rafael and Ester Kuntu, Kaarel Pogga, Indrek Sammul, Taimo Kõrvemaa. I reviewed this last year: "A compliment to say it's the kind of genre gem we used to discover on VHS then laugh forever at while munching on pizza." If this looks like your jam, keep an eye out for it. 🤘 // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Back-Country Horror Film 'Lovely, Dark, and Deep'

Lovely, Dark, and Deep Trailer
"A beguiling cosmic nightmare." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror psychological thriller called Lovely, Dark, and Deep, which marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Teresa Sutherland. The film originally premiered at Canada's Fantasia Film Festival and Toronto After Dark Film Festival, and also at the MOTELx Lisbon Horror Film Festival last year. Lennon, a new back-country ranger, travels alone through the dangerous wilderness, hoping to uncover the origins of a tragedy that has haunted her since she was a child. While adapting to her solitary existence in the wilderness, she becomes aware of a lurking, sinister presence. Georgina Campbell stars as Lennon, with a small indie cast including Nick Blood, Wai Ching Ho, Edgar Morais, Ana Sofia Martins, and Soren Hellerup. The Hobby Trailer
"It's more than a podcast, a hobby, it's more than just collecting. It's really become a major part of my life." The streaming service Documentary+ has revealed their official trailer for The Hobby, an amusing new documentary thriller available streaming this February. Another collectors craze! From Beanie Babies to cards again. From filmmaker Morgan Jon Fox, the film is a character-driven, feel-good deep dive into the high-stakes, eccentric world of card collecting. Most people will remember trading cards from growing up, but after the 90s the started to disappear. Now they're back, along with vinyl and everything else vintage, in a brand new modern card collecting boom. The Hobby follows longtime collectors and a new generation of buyers from the trading card industry, diving deep into the real-time trading card fever as the hobby goes nuclear. First Look Teaser Trailer for French Action Thriller 'The Wages of Fear'

The Wages of Fear Trailer
"To put it out, we need to blow it up." Roll on! Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for a French action thriller titled The Wages of Fear, the latest from filmmaker Julien Leclercq. This is set to launch streaming only on Netflix at the end of March. "They have 24 hours to drive two trucks full of nitroglycerin and prevent a terrible catastrophe." Similar to William Friedkin's Sorcerer, but in the desert! That film was based on the same French novel that was also made into the original 1953 film. In order to prevent a deadly explosion, an illicit crack team has 24 hours to drive two truckloads of nitroglycerine across a desert laden with danger. This is a remake of the classic 1950s French thriller of the same name - Le Salaire de la Peur or The Wages of Fear. Thankfully they're not turning it into a series, it's just another new feature film. This 2024 update stars Franck Gastambide, Alban Lenoir, Sofiane Zermani, and Ana Girardot. Looks damn good! This teaser certainly got my attention. Might turn out to be a properly entertaining action flick? // Continue Reading ›

Sundance 2024: 'Didi' is Yet Another Original Coming-of-Age Classic

Didi Sundance Review
This is one of best discoveries of Sundance 2024. A knock out - loved every second of it. 2024 is a big year for the talented Taiwanese-American filmmaker Sean Wang, who is originally from Fremont, CA. Not only does he have this feature debut movie premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and it's getting rave reviews (and it won the Audience Award), he's also probably going to win an Academy Award in March for his short film Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó about his grannies (it's also streaming on Disney+ in February). Sundance has a memorably rich tradition of premiering many of the best coming-of-age films of all-time, ranging from 500 Days of Summer to Napoleon Dynamite to Little Miss Sunshine to The Spectacular Now to Clerks to Eighth Grade to Boyhood, and so many others over the years. Sean Wang's Dìdi (弟弟) instantly joins the ranks as yet another outstanding coming-of-age film making its mark at Sundance. It's going right to the top of my list of my favorite films of the festival. I have to take this moment to rave about and recommend it. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for True Crime Doc 'They Called Him Mostly Harmless'

They Called Him Mostly Harmless Doc Trailer
"He was definitely trying to stay anonymous." Max has revealed an official trailer for a true crime, mystery thriller documentary film titled They Called Him Mostly Harmless, available for streaming next month on Max after premiering at last year's Hampton Film Festival. Based on the Wired article about the "mostly harmless" hiker found dead in a tent in Florida in 2018, surrounded by food and cash, but no ID. Who was he? What really happened to him? True crime veteran Patricia E. Gillespie's new doc is a character-centric reimagining of the classic mystery. She explains: "I was drawn to this story because of its potential to help us think more deeply about what it means to live in the digital age. I hope we've made a film that manages to both honor the citizen detectives who worked tirelessly to identify the 'Mostly Harmless', while encouraging audiences to get involved in the issue of unidentified persons." There is a conclusion to this story, though you'll have to watch to find out – unless you already know following the investigation online over the years. // Continue Reading ›

Yep, they're going back to the ol' Gru storyline again, which wrapped up with Despicable Me 3 back in 2017. This sequel is set to open in July, the usual spot for these movies. In the first Despicable Me movie in seven years, Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem, with an introduction of another new family member - Gru Jr. They face a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (voiced by Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (voiced by Sofia Vergara), and the Gru family is forced to go on the run. Now it's officially nominated for an Academy Award in the Best International Feature category. A modern Odyssey through the dangers of the desert, the sea and the ambiguities of the human soul. Starring newcomers Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall. This incredible film is one of these examples of filmmaking where I just have no idea how they pulled off and filmed certain jaw-dropping scenes, it's all so astonishing to watch. The film is set for a US release starting in February (in theaters nationwide), then in the UK starting in early April (in UK + Irish cinemas). Official Trailer for Writer Thriller 'Ghostwritten' Starring Jay Duplass

Ghostwritten Trailer
"How valuable can a story be – as an alternative to truth?" Cranked Up Films has revealed a trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Ghostwritten, from filmmaker Thomas Matthews. This has been finished up for years now, but it only premiered at a few film festivals last year. Finally ready for a VOD release this February. Thomas Matthews' Ghost-Written (aka Ghostwritten), follows a one-hit novelist who is out of his depth on a winter residency, and perhaps losing grip on reality... "From a bird's eye view it's funny and up close it's tragic. Maybe unconsciously we were shooting for that - as it pertains to our movie... I thought the audience would have the best time if they came in thinking about nostalgia, ego and solving a puzzle without getting too serious." Sundance 2024: Jesse Eisenberg Takes a Trip to Poland in 'A Real Pain'

A Real Pain Review
Actor Jesse Eisenberg is one of many actors who have made the leap into filmmaking, making his feature directorial debut with the film When You Finish Saving the World that premiered in 2022 at the Sundance Film Festival. That one was quickly forgotten, despite some solid performances. As talented as he certainly is as actor, he's still honing his craft behind the lens. Eisenberg returned to the 2024 Sundance Film Festival to premiered his second feature titled A Real Pain, and this is the one he's going to be really remembered for. The title seems to be a clear riff on the phrase "a real pain in the ass", referring to one of the characters in the film. However, there is an additional layered meaning that only becomes apparent once you've seen the film, connecting deep with what Eisenberg is trying to express with his script. It's one of the best films at Sundance that has remained on the top of my mind even after watching many films following the premiere. // Continue Reading ›

Emily Bett Rickards & Stephen Amell in Western 'Calamity Jane' Trailer

Calamity Jane Trailer
"There's too many of 'em." "It's just more targets..." Goldwyn Films has revealed their trailer for Calamity Jane, a western thriller arriving to watch in February. Currently set for release on VOD in about a week from now. After Wild Bill is killed in a poker game, Calamity Jane must break out of prison and seek revenge before the Deadwood's Sheriff can arrest them. Not to be confused with the actual classic western also called Calamity Jane from 1953 starring Doris Day. Directed by Terry Miles, Calamity Jane reunites Arrow co-stars Emily Bett Rickards and Stephen Amell, who star alongside Tim Rozon, Priscilla Faia, Gage Marsh, Garrett Black, Christian Sloan, Troy Mundle, and Spencer Borgeson. Another Strange Trailer for Bruno Dumont's Wacky Sci-Fi 'The Empire'

The Empire Trailer
"The opposing forces are formidable." Time to battle the Empire! Memento Films has revealed a brand new official trailer for The Empire, the strange French sci-fi film from filmmaker Bruno Dumont. We already posted a trailer for this last year when it was first unveiled. It will premiere at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival next month, perhaps because every other fest rejected it. Bruno Dumont's sci-fi The Empire (aka L'Empire) is set in a quiet fishing village on the Opal Coast in Northern France, and tells the story of a child who is so unique and peculiar it unleashes a secret war between extraterrestrial forces of good and evil. Starring a big French cast including Virginie Efira, Lily-Rose Depp, Camille Cottin, Lyna Khoudri, Anamaria Vartolomei, with Fabrice Luchini. It's a bit weird how this trailer hides so much of the sci-fi until the last few shots at the end, instead focusing on all the French women's bodies. I really wish this looked better because I love ambitious sci-fi, but it looks like it's going be a giant dud. I guess you never know? Thoughts? // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Creepy & Weird 'Stopmotion' Indie Horror Creation

Stopmotion Trailer
"Do you want to hear the next bt of the story?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Stopmotion, a very strange and peculiar indie horror film from English filmmaker Robert Morgan. This first premiered at both Fantastic Fest 2023 and the Sitges Film Festival last year, where I originally saw it. Yes, there is stop-motion animation work in this, though it's really a story about a woman who is creating a film. Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother, embarks upon the creation of a film that becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella's mind starts to fracture, the characters in her project take on a life of their own. Then it gets really weird! "An unnerving display of psychological horror reminiscent of Censor (2021)." IFC also adds that this features "truly unforgettable, Švankmajer-esque animation." Aisling Franciosi stars as Ella, along with Stella Gonet, Tom York, and James Swanton. This is a gnarly trailer, with some frightening editing that builds to the end. Take a look. // Continue Reading ›

Sundance 2024: The Sasquatch Family Will Play in 'Sasquatch Sunset'

Sasquatch Sunset Review
One of the best nature documentaries ever made has just premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It's a remarkable look featuring copious amounts of never-before-seen footage of a very rarely observed creature known as Dinanthropoides magnipus. Directed by the accomplished filmmaking brothers David Zellner & Nathan Zellner, their new nature doc is called Sasquatch Sunset, an one-of-a-kind observational film taking us closer than ever before into the lives of a Sasquatch family. While it might seem a film about some furry creatures hanging out in the woods might be rather boring, this one breaks the mold and explores new territory. Sasquatch Sunset is a bewildering, fascinating, ambitious cinematic experience unlike anything any human has ever encountered before. While you may not think it is necessary to spend this much time with them, there is much that humans can learn from this study of these rare creatures and their daily lives. // Continue Reading ›

A determined Portland detective is in a race against time to stop a twisted game show being broadcast on the dark web, where captives are forced to compete for their lives. The losers are executed via live broadcast. For the sadistic masked host, this is all part of his master plan to gain more ratings. Ed Westwick stars as Det. Ben Jacobs, with Andrew P. Stephen, Natalya Tsvetkova, Lola Wayne, Rose Reynolds, and Rory Alexander. This isn't the first movie about a death game broadcast online, there are tons of them already, and this definitely won't be the last either. One from the Heart: Reprise is a spectacular 4K restoration and reimagining of the 1982 cult classic – six minutes of footage were added to replace the original negative, previously thought to be destroyed, resulting in this brand-new "Reprise" version, approved by Coppola himself. The film tells the story of a Las Vegas couple (Teri Garr & Frederic Forrest) whose break-up on the 4th of July leads them both to a night on the strip in pursuit of romantic fantasies (Raul Julia & Nastassja Kinski). Official Trailer for 'Box: Metaphor' - Dystopian Sci-Fi Mystery Thriller

"You are who you choose to be." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie sci-fi creation called Box: Metaphor, from filmmaker Kevin Khachan. This one goes on the list of extremely literal titles - so this sci-fi film about people stuck in box is, uh, a metaphor? Go figure. Box: Metaphor is a compelling dystopian journey where unjust imprisonment unveils societal conformity and defiance's profound impact. It's about breaking free from metaphorical boxes and the resilience of the human spirit. Box: Metaphor is set in a dystopian world, described as "having a similar aesthetic to The Hunger Games franchise." The big ensemble cast features Kasia Stelmach, Lorry D'Ercole, Charlotte Coquelin, Martin Cohen, Diane De Lacy, Jasmine Evans, Kevin Khachan, Kloud Milas, and Charlotte Wood. There's really only 30 seconds of footage in this trailer, and it's quite glossy, but might get the attention of some intrigued viewers. // Continue Reading ›

Full Trailer for Netflix's Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series

Avatar: The Last Airbender Trailer
"The world needs the Avatar. It needs you, Aang." Netflix has revealed the epic full official trailer for their highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved animation series Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is looking way better than it should, even better than Netflix's other live-action animes. A reimagining of the beloved series following Aang, the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation. The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. Together with his friends Sokka & Katara, Aang embarks on an action-packed quest to take his rightful place as the next Avatar. The original creators Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko are only back as writers. The cast features: Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Tamlyn Tomita as Yukari, Ken Leung as Zhao. Plus Appa the adorable flying bison, of course. This looks impressive! Better than the movie, that's for sure. Let's hope this is worth it! It better live up to the original series - I'm excited to watch. // Continue Reading ›

Oscar Nominations
The complete list of nominees for the 96th Academy Awards, the most prestigious award in Hollywood, have been announced today (from Oscars.org). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees via live broadcast. The nominations from 2023 are, as expected, an exhilarating collection of some of the best movies of the year. Poor Things and Oppenheimer scored the most nominations, ending up with nods in almost every single category. Two of my favorite films of the year - this is great news! The most interesting surprises: Napoleon and Anatomy of a Fall ending up with so many noms in various categories. I'm also happy to see Godzilla: Minus One sneaking in for Best VFX. What a list! The Academy chose a total of ten Best Picture nominees for 2023, including: Past Lives, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, and yes, Barbie. Without further ado, view the full list of 2023 nominees below. // Continue Reading ›

Sundance 2024: 'Will & Harper' is a Wonderful Doc About Two Friends

Will & Harper Review
There is an outstanding documentary film that just premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival called Will & Harper, featuring the iconic actor / comedian Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele. It's a road trip film, following the two as they embark upon a journey across the United States of America, from New York City to California. However, this film is much more important that just a road trip story. Will learned that his good friend had recently transitioned into a woman, and he didn't quite know how to deal with the situation properly. So he proposed this idea to her and they decide to get a documentary film crew to follow them along as they talk and drive and have a good time. It turned out wonderful. It feels like Will & Harper is a watershed moment for trans visibility and allyship. It may actually cause real change. It's an emotionally honest, beautiful, authentic, uplifting film about two good friends learning to grow and explore themselves together. The audience gave this an instant standing ovation at the end - not a common thing at Sundance. // Continue Reading ›

Sci-Fi Adventure Series 'Constellation' Trailer Featuring Noomi Rapace

Constellation Trailer
"Astronauts go through things they don't understand..." Apple TV has revealed an official trailer for a series called Constellation, described as an "action-packed space adventure [exploring] the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman's desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel." Well damn, okay! That sounds enticing for science fiction geeks / space nerds. Created and written by Peter Harness, Constellation stars Noomi Rapace as Jo – an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space – only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. It was filmed and produced mostly in Germany, and looks like yet another thrilling Apple TV+ sci-fi series surrounded by mystery. It's arriving for streaming in February in just a few more weeks. The series also stars Jonathan Banks, James D'Arcy, Julian Looman, William Catlett, Barbara Sukowa; introducing Rosie & Davina Coleman as Alice. It's funny they call this a "space adventure" yet so much of it is set down on Earth. Worth a watch anyway. // Continue Reading ›

First Teaser Trailer for 'Hit Man' Starring Glen Powell & Adria Arjona

Hit Man Teaser Trailer
"You enjoying your pie?" "All pie is good pie." Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for Hit Man, the hugely loved new "hitman" comedy from Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater. This originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year, blowing the roof off in one of the most enthusiastic screenings I've ever been to (read my full review). It's also playing at Sundance this week. From Academy Award-nominated writer/director Richard Linklater, co-written and starring Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a hit man meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Co-written by Linklater & Powell and inspired by a true story, it's a cleverly existential comedy about identity. Hit Man arrives on Netflix in June, even though it should be playing in theaters worldwide instead of going straight to streaming. The cast includes Austin Amelio, Retta, Sanjay Rao, and Evan Holtzman. Everyone loves this film! You will, too! This is a very short teaser trailer with barely any footage - all you need to see before going to watch it. // Continue Reading ›

Sundance 2024: 'Love Me' is an Inventive Sci-Fi Tale of Defining 'You'

Love Me Review
Are you really you? What makes you, you? The important existential questions of our time. Modern society has moved to the defensive belief that, of course everyone is themselves, of course you can't argue with that! How dare you question that! But – what if the things that you claim make you you, are not actually genuine? What if most people are actually living fake lives, trying to replicate and model some other person they look up to, instead of defining themselves authentically. This is the idea that this mesmerizing new film grapples with – in a fascinating, visually compelling, and unquestionably thought-provoking way. Love Me is one of the most innovative films I have seen so far in 2024 (while wading through the terrific Sundance 2024 selection). It's got a few flaws, and it doesn't dig deep enough into these questions and concepts, but it's still an ambitious, one-of-a-kind cinematic creation unlike anything I've encountered before. The premise: in the future after humanity is gone, a leftover "smart buoy" and a satellite orbiting Earth connect and fall in love. // Continue Reading ›

Funny UK Trailer for Dark Ages Comedy 'Seize Them!' with Nick Frost

Seize Them! Trailer
"Greeting peasants!" Entertainment Film Distributors in the UK have unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy called Seize Them!, made by NZ filmmaker Curtis Vowell. This is the first big lead role for actress Aimee Lou Wood (as a Queen!) following her excellent turn in Living recently. It's set for release in April in the UK, but has no other dates set yet. Dark Ages Britain where Queen Dagan is toppled by a revolution led by Humble Joan. The Queen becomes a fugitive in her own land, and must face hardship and danger as she embarks on a voyage to win back her throne. A "comedy road movie set in the dark ages" – with her new friends, a castle worker and a shit shoveler, she begins her quest for justice. In addition to Aimee Lou Wood, this stars Lolly Adefope, Nicola Coughlan, Paul Kaye, John Macmillan, with Jessica Hynes and Nick Frost. Great cast! This looks like goofy fun! It's all rather absurd, but that's the whole point. Right...? // Continue Reading ›

Let's Dance Again - The 40th Sundance Film Festival Returns to Utah

40th Sundance Film Festival
As I settled into my first few screenings at Sundance, I'm overwhelmed by the emotions and memories and feelings I've had about this festival. I've been attending for 18 years – quite a long time considering I started this blog when I was only 20. It was a whole different festival back in 2007, my very first year, and much has changed since then. Sundance is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year – much has changed since it first started as well. Sundance was founded in 1978 as the United States Film Festival (aka Utah/US Film Fest), started by Robert Redford and his company. The title was switched to Sundance in 1984, and this is the date they've chosen to designate this as the 40th anniversary. While the festival has been evolving and adapting and updating, there is one thing that has stayed the same after all these years - the films. I spend money year after year to fly over to Utah and attend Sundance because it's really all about the films. Good or bad, big or small, there's always an amazing wealth of must see films at Sundance year after year after year. // Continue Reading ›

Sundance 2024: 'It's What's Inside' is a Totally Fresh Genre Invention

It's What's Inside Review
THE talk of the town at this year's festival is the Midnight horror film It's What's Inside. I was lucky to attend the world premiere of this indie horror film at a screening starting at 11PM Friday night at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and it blew the roof off of the theater. Everyone loved it. No one there had any idea what they were about to see. It was shot in secret, everything about it was kept a secret, no one will want to tell you the secret. Which makes it kind of hard to talk about... I can vaguely talk around the idea of it and why I love it, without revealing any of what actually happens in it. Even if you aren't someone who cares that much about spoilers, trust me/us/everyone on this – you'll want to see it without knowing anything about "what's inside of it" until the lights go down and the film begins. It's a thrilling, hilarious, clever, raucous, ingenious sci-fi horror comedy from filmmaker Greg Jardin. Wait until you find out what's in the suitcase. // Continue Reading ›

Inside Look Featurette for 'Masters of the Air' - Taking Off Next Week

Masters of the Air Trailer
Ready for takeoff. Apple TV+ has revealed a brand new featurette for the Masters of the Air series, which will be launching on Apple TV+ starting next week. This is looking incredible!! Very excited to dive right in. We already posted the main official trailer back in December, but with the debut next week they're giving it one final push. Once again produced by Steven Spielberg and Amblin, this 9-episode series tells the story of the airmen of World War II. Focusing specifically on the air men of the 100th Bomb Group (the "Bloody Hundredth") as they conduct many perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. A new series from Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman - the producers of Band of Brothers and The Pacific. During WWII, airmen risk their lives – a brotherhood forged by courage, loss, and triumph. The series features a stellar cast led by the Oscar nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, and Ncuti Gatwa. They also got Tom Hanks to talk in this video as part of the promotion, which is cool to see. Check it out below. // Continue Reading ›

Sundance 2024: June Squibb is at Her Best in Revenge Tale 'Thelma'

Thelma Review
If there was ever a perfect role tailor made for the tremendously talented actress June Squibb, this would be it. Most have come to know her in the last few years following her unforgettable appearance in Alexander Payne's Nebraska in 2013. But her acting career goes back decades. Remarkably, this is her first ever lead role in any film, and it's worth the wait. This film is all that I was hoping it might be – a Sundance crowd-pleaser that anyone should be able to enjoy. Thelma is a hilarious, heartfelt, easy-to-watch flick about an elderly woman getting revenge on scammers. It's as simple as that! Though, of course, there is much more going on in it, exploring with great humility everything that comes with growing old, growing frail, and the loneliness that strikes when everyone you knew has passed away. There isn't a moment of this film that isn't enjoyable and wholesome, bolstered by June Squibb at her very best in another unforgettable performance. // Continue Reading ›

Teaser Trailer for 'The Mountain' - New Zealand Coming-of-Age Film

The Mountain Teaser Trailer
"Your mountain is your ancestor." Madman Films has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a New Zealand film called The Mountain, marking the feature directorial debut of New Zealand actress Rachel House (from Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok and tons of other films). It's currently set to open in NZ this March, though it still doesn't have release dates set outside of the country. This looks great! I want to see it! The film explores the journey of three young people as they seek solace under the watchful gaze of the Taranaki mountain (aka "Taranaki Maunga" - see Google Maps) and companionship in the spirit of adventure. Starring Elizabeth Atkinson (Te Atiawa, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Tama, Kāi Tahu), Reuben Francis, and Terence Daniel (Ngāti Kahungunu, Raukawa ki Wharepūhunga, Kuki Airani – Aitutaki). They are also joined by Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) (Muru), Byron Coll, Fern Sutherland, and Sukena Shah. There's just enough footage in this teaser to convince me this is a must watch film, with a similar vibe as Wilderpeople. That's also one gorgeous mountain. Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

Matt Rife in Mystery Thriller Comedy 'The Private Eye' Official Trailer

The Private Eye Trailer
"You're really bad at this, huh?" Illusion Islands has revealed the trailer for the mystery romance comedy thriller (all in one!) film titled The Private Eye, marking the featuring directorial debut of filmmaker Jack Cook. Set for release in theaters in early February, though it won't make much of an impact. Help solve the mystery... In The Private Eye, Mort Madison's life is spiraling downward, when a beguiling, slightly familiar woman hires him for his most unusual case – to spy on David, whom he believed was her lover. But he falls for her, too... The film stars Matt Rife as Mort Madison, with Clare Grant, Elliot, Denzel Whitaker, Lexy Panterra, Charles Worth, Erik Griffin, Eugenia Kuzmina, & Eric Roberts. Ooph, this is not a great trailer for a film that does not look good at all. Avoid this one and go watch The Kid Detective instead. // Continue Reading ›

Official US Trailer for Bas Devos' Peaceful Film 'Here' with Stefan Gota

Here Official Trailer
"I go places I've never been." The Cinema Guild has revealed an official US trailer for the indie Belgian film titled Here, the latest from acclaimed low-key filmmaker Bas Devos. This originally premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival last year, earning great reviews. I caught up with it at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, before it went on to screen at TIFF, AFI Fest, NYFF, and others. Set in Brussels, the film revolves around a potential love story between a Romanian construction worker and a Belgian-Chinese doctorate student of moss, who cross paths just before the former is about to move back home. It's a very peaceful, calm, humble film with some slow moments that let the story breathe. It allows the narrative to take its time, to let it build in its own slow-paced way, much like the moss that Shuxiu is studying. Here stars only two people: Stefan Gota as Stefan and Liyo Gong as Shuxiu. I'll recommend seeking out this film if slow cinema is your jam. // Continue Reading ›

First Trailer for Sci-Fi Romantic Comedy 'Molli and Max in the Future'

Molli and Max in the Future Trailer
"It's me! It's Molli!" Level 33 Entertainment has revealed an official trailer the indie sci-fi romantic comedy called Molli and Max in the Future, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Michael Lukk Litwak. I love this film! It's a nerdy, one-of-a-kind, tiny little sci-fi film riffing on When Harry Met Sally, but set in the distant future. Made on a tiny budget with practical FX and simple sets mostly in one location: a man and woman whose orbits repeatedly collide over the course of 12 years, 4 planets, 3 dimensions and 1 space-cult. Zosia Mamet and Aristotle Athari star as the galaxy-crossed lovers in the future. There's also appearances by a few others including Erin Darke, Okieriete Onaodowan, and Danny Burstein. It premiered at SXSW last year, but I caught up with this one in Sitges, and it's right up my alley. I wrote in my glowing review that "anyone will enjoy it – as long as you're a sci-fi nerd, too.". It's not going to connect with everyone, mainly with sci-fi geeks who will appreciate this clever, charming indie filmmaking. Worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Holly Kenney's Indie Horror 'Stranger in the Woods'

Stranger in the Woods Trailer
"Your safe, Olivia. It's the rest of us who aren't." Red Hound Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller called Stranger in the Woods, from filmmaker Adam Newacheck. This has premiered at a bunch of strange, unknown festivals in 2023, though it's only officially premiering this year. It's set for a VOD release in February just in time for Valentine's Day, if anyone is interested. Liv and her friends go on a weekend trip to the woods to stay in a cabin, but when her dog vanishes, a tranquil weekend unravels. Her friends suspect that it's all her, but she believes someone attacked her, and something strange is going on. Starring Holly Kenney (who also wrote the script), Brendin Brown, T.A. Spencer, Devon Stewart, Paris Nicole, and Radek Antczak. This doesn't look like a winner, with some generic plotting about not believing a woman. Though it's nice to see someone get revenge whn something happens to their dog or cat. // Continue Reading ›

'Bleeding Love' Trailer with Ewan McGregor & Daughter Clara McGregor

Bleeding Love Trailer
"Why would I ever trust you? You've never been there for me, Dad!" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for a film titled Bleeding Love, which is a new title. It first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year under the title You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, with stops at the Karlovy Vary and Göteborg Film Fests. Now set for a VOD release in February. It's yet another film about addiction and how hard it is to help someone overcome addiction. A father takes his estranged daughter on a road trip in an effort to get her out of trouble. Along the way they meet all types of strangers, as their strained relationship is put to the test. The film stars real-life father and daughter duo Ewan McGregor and Clara McGregor, along with Kim Zimmer, Devyn McDowell, Sasha Alexander, with Jake Weary and Vera Bulder. The name change is probably because this didn't get great reviews at festivals, and because that original title is a bit clunky. This new title isn't much better, either... As much as I adore Ewan McGregor, I'm not a fan of this film - I caught it last year and it's barely serviceable, rather forgettable unfortunately. There's not much to see here. // Continue Reading ›

Biopic Doc Trailer 'Rolling Along: An American Story' About Bill Bradley

Rolling Along: An American Story Doc Trailer
"I wanted to know America, like I once knew the seams of a basketball." Festival Trailer for 'Igualada' - About a Black Colombian Rural Activist

Igualada Trailer
"We are the descendants of free men and women who were enslaved." Human Pictures has revealed a first look festival trailer for a documentary film titled Igualada, premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival kicking off this week in Utah. One highly anticipated world cinema doc film showing at Sundance this year. Black Colombian activist Francia Márquez transforms a derogatory term, "Igualada," into a symbol of rights defiance. Her presidential campaign inspires the entire nation, challenging societal norms. In one of Latin America’s most unequal countries, Márquez, a Black Colombian rural activist, challenges the status quo with a presidential campaign that reappropriates the term "Igualada" — someone who acts as if they deserve rights that supposedly don't correspond to them — and inspires a nation to dream. This looks like a rousing and inspiring story of just how hard it is to fight against incredible oppression, another fascinating tale of tenacity & ambition. Definitely one to keep an eye on, whether at Sundance or wherever else it shows up next. This film is also very similar to the excellent doc Bobi Wine: The People's President from last year. // Continue Reading ›

Cobweb Trailer
"I believe it's gonna be a masterpiece." Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed a new official US trailer for the Korean meta comedy Cobweb, which initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year. Finally set for US release this February, also on VOD at the same time as in theaters. A new film from acclaimed Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-woon (The Good the Bad the Weird, I Saw the Devil, Age of Shadows), with a meta story about a filmmaker trying to make a masterpiece and realizing how hard that really is. The story is set in Seoul in 1970 and focuses on Kim, a director who is dissatisfied with the ending of his project entitled "Cobweb". Despite obstacles and interference from censorship authorities, disgruntled actors & producers, Kim is determined to rework the ending of his film in just two days, in hopes of making it a masterpiece. The main cast includes Song Kang-ho, Park Jeong-su, Im Soo-jung, Oh Jung-se, Jeon Yeo-been, and Krystal Jung. This received mostly positive reviews out of a Cannes - it's a tad too long, but an enjoyable meta story about cinema. A clever and wildly entertaining comedy about the chaos of making movies.
