Official Trailer for Queer Psychological Thriller / Slasher 'Bad Things'

Bad Things Trailer
"Bad Things answers the call for female Jack Torrance types to air their rage." Shudder has revealed the official trailer for indie horror film called Bad Things, the second feature made by queer American indie filmmaker Stewart Thorndike. After first premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier in the summer, the film is now set to debut on Shudder streaming in August if anyone is curious. A group of female friends end up at an old hotel for a weekend getaway and soon discover that "women do bad things here." This hotel trip for a weekend getaway might not turn out as this group of friends thought it would... The film is described in reviews as a "queer take on The Shining" and "a refreshing twist on slashers." This chilling psychological thriller stars Gayle Rankin, Hari Nef, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Rad Pereira, and Molly Ringwald. This certainly looks like a low budget indie, though it has plenty of unique quirks and horror twists anyway. // Continue Reading ›

New Featurette for André Øvredal's 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter'

The Last Voyage of the Demeter Featurette
"I wanted this to be the scariest depiction of Dracula... ever." Universal has revealed a new 2-minute promo featurette for André Øvredal's long-awaited horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, arriving in theaters in a few weeks. We've still only posted one trailer for this before, even though it opens soon (after being delayed by a year already) and looks super gnarly. Inspired by one chapter in Bram Stoker's Dracula, the story is set aboard the Russian schooner Demeter, chartered to carry private cargo – unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film stars Corey Hawkins as Clemens, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, with Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, and Nikolai Nikolaeff. Everything Øvredal says in his video sounds great, this seems right up is alley. He also confirms it definitely is Alien – but on a ship with Drac. Spanish actor Javier Botet stars as Dracula / Nosferatu, which is why there are so many cool shots of him in make-up in here. This looks damn good!! I'll be watching in theaters. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Australian Indie Crime Thriller 'Limbo' from Ivan Sen

Limbo Trailer
"As hard boiled as the ground is hard-baked." Madman Films in Australia has released an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Limbo, from filmmaker Ivan Sen. This initially premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year in the Main Competition section, but it didn't win any awards; it also played at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this summer. In a small Australian outback town Travis Hurley, a detective, arrives to review a 20-year-old unsolved homicide of a young Indigenous girl. Travis discovers a collection of unpleasant truths hiding around this dusty town, highlighting the intricacies of loss and injustice faced by Indigenous Australians. Limbo is an Australian indie mystery-crime film directed by Ivan Sen (of Mystery Road, Goldstone, Expired), starring Simon Baker, Rob Collins, Natasha Wanganeen, and Nicholas Hope. This is a very sleek dialogue-free trailer, relying entirely on critics' quotes and the vivid B&W images to sell this film. This tricky tease should at least get the attention of die-hard cinephiles. Tom Hiddleston is Back First Trailer for Marvel's Series 'Loki' Season 2

Loki Season 2 Trailer
"C'mon, you're the God of Mischief!" "Always have been, always will be." Yes! Finally! Disney has revealed an official trailer for Loki - Season 2, the long-awaited continuation of (one of) the best Marvel streaming series. The first season arrived in 2021 and won everyone over with it's remarkably intelligent journey with Loki through many multiverses and the TVA (Time Variance Authority). This picks up where Season 1 left off and follows Loki & Morbius as they try to figure out why Loki is time slipping. Tom Hiddleston stars as Loki, joined by Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Renslayer), Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15), Eugene Cordero, Tara Strong (Miss Minutes), Neil Ellice, Jonathan Majors (Victor Timely), and Owen Wilson (Mobius), alongside newcomers in Season 2: Rafael Casal, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, and Ke Huy Quan (!!). This new season is part of Phase Five of the MCU (if anyone still cares?) and will launch streaming worldwide this October. Can't wait! So excited for this to continue. And with Benson / Moorhead (Something in the Dirt) directing some eps, this looks like it's going be worth the wait. Let's rock. // Continue Reading ›

FX Doc Series 'Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur' Trailer

Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur
"My mother taught me to analyze society, and not be quiet. If there's something on my mind – speak it!" Yes! Earlier this year, Hulu & FX released this documentary series titled Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur streaming online. We posted the original teaser when it debuted last year, and now want to feature this main trailer as well. "Afeni had a revolutionary story, Tupac helped her tell it to the world." From award-winning director Allen Hughes comes FX's Dear Mama, a deeply personal 5-part doc series that defies the conventions of traditional storytelling to share an illuminating saga of mother and son: Black Panther activist Afeni and famous slain rapper Tupac Shakur. Their story chronicles the possibilities and contradictions of America from a time of revolutionary fervor in the 60s right into Hip Hop culture's most ostentatious decade. Tupac was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996, only the year after releasing his track "Dear Mama", and Afeni Shakur passed away in 2016 after carrying on his legacy for all of these years. This looks like a compelling and inspiring look at the lives of both of these revolutionaries. // Continue Reading ›

Tobin Bell Returns as Jigsaw in First Official Trailer for 'Saw X' Sequel

Saw X Trailer
"The only thing I have not provided is your anesthetic - but trust me, you will want to remain alert." Uh oh. Lionsgate has revealed the first trailer for Saw X, the next highly anticipated sequel in the seemingly never-ending Saw franchise of gruesome, gory, horror movies. Of course they had to bring back the original Jigsaw, played by actor Tobin Bell, who died of cancer at the end of Saw III (though still played in part in many other sequels). They found a way to bring him back! Set between the events of Saw I + II, Jigsaw travels to Mexico in hopes of trying an experimental procedure that may cure him. He later discovers that it was all a big hoax, leading him to set another elaborately grotesque series of fatal games for the scammers. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way with deranged, and ingenious, traps. In addition to Bell, this also stars Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Michael Beach, & Renata Vaca. The trailer shows quite a bit of the story, but I think it'll still get people out to the theater to see this gore-fest. Jigsaw is really pissed off. // Continue Reading ›

Meet the 'Pillars of Foundation' in a Promo Featurette for This Series

Foundation Series Trailer
"Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what's right." Apple has debuted a four-minute promo featurette for their epic sci-fi series Foundation, which is now in its Second Season streaming right now on Apple TV+. Even though I've posted many other trailers for this already, I'm happy to keep talking about it because Foundation is awesome. I've been watching episodes this summer and it continues to keep me captivated and invigorated - so many big sci-fi ideas in it. This promo video focuses on the many women of the Foundation series: Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick; Leah Harvey as Salvor Hardin; Laura Birn as Demerzel, an android; Ella-Rae Smith as Queen Sareth; Isabella Laughland as Brother Constant; and Rachel House as Tellem Bond. The video also features commentary from the series' producers David S. Goyer along with director Alex Graves. It's nice to see them putting so many of these unique characters at the forefront of the story, as there's much more going on beyond the plotlines with Hari Seldon and Brother Day. Adapted from the iconic novels by Isaac Asimov, Apple TV+'s Foundation chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity & rebuild civilization amid the fall of the "Galactic Empire". // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Dark Comedy Short Film 'Never Fuggedaboutit' About Editors

Never Fuggedaboutit Short Film
"Honor and loyalty!" A must see new short film is available online. Never Fuggedaboutit is both written and directed by the filmmaker / editor Dustin Waldman, who has also worked as an editor on a few other feature film projects - including the doc Faya Dayi. This premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Never Fuggedaboutit goes back to the early days right after 9/11 and how frayed everyone's nerves were back then. A struggling post-production house is hired to remove a shot of the Twin Towers from the intro to a hit TV show - putting pressure on two editors, one of whom questions if it's the right thing to do. They don't say it, but clearly the show is "The Sopranos", which makes me wonder if this was a real story? The short stars Nicholas Nazmi, Jonathan Dauermann, and Tara Bopp. It's a smart film that cleverly uses editing (of course) to say much more than what the dialogue says. Do you think it was the right choice? // Continue Reading ›

Korean Indie Sci-Fi Film About Aliens Among Us - 'Unidentified' Trailer

Unidentified Trailer
"Do you know why the UFOs are here?" Buffalo 8 has revealed an official US trailer for an indie Korean sci-fi film titled Unidentified, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jude Chun. This little indie premiered at the 2022 BendFilm Festival last year, and it also played at the 2023 Rotterdam Film Festival earlier this year. It's now set to open in September. In 1993, planet-like spheres descended from space, hovering above every major city on earth. 29 years later, the UFOs remain, having become a part of the landscape of modern life. In the hustle and bustle of Seoul, people go to coffee shops, they work dull and repetitive office jobs, riding public transportation and visiting psychics. A man walks the streets wearing a sandwich board that reads "UFO's are not real". But paranoia is growing: some of these people may, in fact, be aliens. Described as a mockumentary / extra dry comedy, the film is a "hilarious, moving and whimsical speculative fiction about our yearning for belonging and connection in a world that looks increasingly less like home." Starring Jang Sun, Kim Hyo-in, and Jeon Ho-hyun. I really like the spherical ships in here. // Continue Reading ›

Whoa! First Look Trailer for Epic Sci-Fi Film 'Kalki 2898-AD' from India

Kalki 2898-AD Trailer
"What is Project K?" Awesome!! A first look trailer has debuted for an epic Indian sci-fi movie called Kalki 2898-AD, originally revealed during a big San Diego Comic-Con panel last weekend. After all the hype over RRR last year, it looks like India is about to drop their own Dune / Star Wars epic in theaters in early 2024. Plot details are sparse so far, but it's a Hindu religion inspired epic story with imagery that is reminiscent of Villeneuve's Dune. In Kalki 2898 AD, Indian mega star Prabhas plays a modern-day embodiment of Lord Vishnu who arrives to help save Earth. Directed By Nag Ashwin, the film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, & Disha Patani. The big tease involves the question of who/what "Project K" is and will he save the world? This is quite an impressive teaser, with some imagery that should get every sci-fi fan's attention. I'm certainly intrigued! I'll be watching closely for any updates on this movie. // Continue Reading ›

Soi Cheang's Hong Kong Murderer Thriller 'Mad Fate' Official Trailer

Mad Fate Trailer
"Red eyes are an ominous sign. It's when you will kill." Illume Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie Hong Kong mystery thriller film titled Mad Fate, from filmmaker Soi Cheang. This first premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the Hong Kong Film Festival in March. It's now set to open in the US this August. The film stars Gordon Lam as a fortune-teller who crosses paths with a young man with a strong desire to commit murder and tries to change the latter's destiny in various ways. It's a stylish genre film with a few twists & turns. Also starring Lokman Yeung, Berg Ng, Ng Wing Sze, and Peter Chan. Reviews describe this one as: "Part grisly murder mystery, part pitch-black absurdist comedy feverishly musing on destiny and free will, Soi Cheang’s follow-up to Limbo sees the director again mining his flair for genre experiments in this nightmarish roller coaster ride." 'Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind' Documentary Trailer

Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind Trailer
"I always felt that I could tell stories that other people were not telling." Greenwich Ent. has unveiled their official trailer for a documentary film titled Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind, a comprehensive biopic film about the life of and books by the famed author Joyce Carol Oates. Swedish director Stig Björkman approached JCO with his idea to make a portrait film of her for over 9 years before she finally agreed. The doc film takes us behind the genius of one of the most read contemporary American writers. The now 83-year-old writer’s life story is one of a changing society. With her work as a navigator the movie takes us back to her childhood and university years. We learn about societal events that affected her deeply and are evident in her writing, like the 1960’s riots in Detroit, to the tragic Chappaquiddick incident and the life of Marilyn Monroe. Love her or hate her writing, she is a fascinating and curious individual with plenty to say - about society, love, life, and the experiences of women of all kinds. Watch: First 3 Music Videos for Sigur Rós' New ÁTTA Film Experiment

Sigur Rós' - ÁTTA Film Experiment
"I wished to show how Sigur Rós is the soundtrack of our lives through happiness, pain, hope, grief, and love. The short documentary, Andrá, celebrates the way in which Sigur Rós captures and channels the humanity that unites us all." The iconic Icelandic band Sigur Ros has announced a new "film experiment" as part of a unique promotion for their latest album called ÁTTA (buy it here via Amazon). The band has asked ten different filmmakers to create music videos / short films / visual interpretations of each of the 10 tracks from the new album (their eighth studio album so far). The first three are out now, with more arriving soon, and they're mostly from Icelandic artists - featuring some very abstract and mesmerizing visuals. As a huge fan of Sigur Ros (I once flew to Stockholm to see them play live) I am very curious to see all of these. These first three are so different, yet speak powerfully to the exhilarating experience of listening to this music. The Andrá one is exquisite, showing how people respond emotionally while they listen to the song. It's beautiful. // Continue Reading ›

A Scientific Look Featurette at Freediving for 'The Deepest Breath' Doc

The Deepest Breath - Freediving Featurette
"Think about the Mammalian Diving Reflex and what it does for you." Netflix released a 7-min featurette looking at "The Science of Freediving," considered one of the most dangerous sports on Earth. It's just a promotion for the doc film The Deepest Breath, but it's worth sharing - especially because it's another opportunity to talk about how amazing this documentary is. I have been recommending The Deepest Breath ever since it premiered at Sundance (here's my full review), as I was completely blown away by it and moved to tears by my emotions while watching it with a crowd at the festival. It's now playing on Netflix. The film focuses on two of the world's best free divers - people who dive down as deep as they can simply by holding their breath (also see: The Big Blue). As Italian champion Alessia Zecchini trains to break a free diving record with expert safety diver Stephen Keenan's help, the two form a strong emotional bond. The doc explains a lot about how freediving works, however this is a fascinating featurette that plays like a short film - with info about the history of the sport, biology of diving, and more. Its worth a watch - along with the doc. // Continue Reading ›

Unnecessary Netflix Doc 'Depp v. Heard' Trailer on Public Perception

Depp v. Heard Trailer
"Where does it end??" Indeed, the right question to ask. Netflix has unveiled their trailer for a documentary series called simply Depp v. Heard about the infamous Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation trial from 2022. Everyone was expecting Netflix to create a doc about this event, they always have to create some "content" around popular events, always chasing that popularity, and here it is already - as fast as ever. Directed by Emma Cooper (of The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes), Depp v Heard is a three-part series examining the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention and became the world's first trial by TikTok. Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores this global media event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society. I don't think being this obsessed with celebrities and their personal lives is healthy at all. Have we learned nothing from other docs like those about Britney Spears, reminding us this is not good? Perhaps it's all unstoppable. // Continue Reading ›

Myrna the Monster Short Film
"I've been trying to get out more, and put myself out more." This short film premiered years ago but it's just now showing up online and it's worth a watch - it's just under 15 minutes. Some really impressive puppet work for the main character. Myrna the Monster is written and directed by Ian Samuels, who went on to make the feature films The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (which I really enjoyed) for Amazon, and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser for Netflix. Myrna first premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and it also played at the SXSW, Dallas, Nashville, and Montclair Film Festivals. A heart-broken alien dreamer from the moon named Myrna transitions into adult life in Los Angeles like any other 20-something. It's actually a touching little story about loneliness and connection. This trailer is all about getting into trouble. "They say a dog is a man's best friend, but what if the man is a total dirtbag? In that case, it might be time for some sweet revenge, doggy style." An abandoned dog teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner, Doug, played by Will Forte. A subversion of the dog movies we know and love, Strays, directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) is a hilarious, R-rated comedy about the complications of love, the importance of great friendships, and the unexpected virtues of couch humping. This stars Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Josh Gad, Harvey Guillén, Brett Gelman, Rob Riggle, Jamie Demetriou, and Sofia Vergara. This looks unique. German distributor Neue Visionen Filmverleih has revealed a first look trailer for the indie film Die Theorie von Allem, which translates directly to The Theory of Everything. The distributor also adds more buzz: with "Timm Kröger, everything is there that makes for great cinematic art in the best Hitchcock tradition. Cast with a fantastic ensemble and interspersed with a phenomenal soundtrack, The Theory of Everything is a brilliant film noir about the contingency of our world, in which much is possible and hardly anything is necessary." A film about the incredible true story of how a fourteen-year-old girl narrowly escaped the slaughter of the Armenian Genocide and embarked upon an odyssey that took her to the heights of Hollywood stardom. Here's the logline pitch: When a tech blogger lands an interview with a tech guru and stops an attack on him, he finds a mysterious ring that takes him back 57 seconds into the past. The ring gimmick is a bit cheesy, and the script is a time travel concept to explore the idea of "going back and redoing things" until you get them right. Which seems to a big way for him to learn some lessons in this, along with realizing 57 seconds is not a long time... Josh Hutcherson co-stars with Morgan Freeman, Greg Germann, Lovie Simone, Bevin Bru, Sammi Rotibi, Marcus Brown. That other plot about stopping this pill baron is oddly shoehorned in, but I guess it's a hot topic nowadays. It's heading to VOD right away, not a great sign. // Continue Reading ›

Scary First Trailer for 'The Exorcist Believer' Sequel with Ellen Burstyn

The Exorcist Believer Trailer
"Wherever those girls went, they brought something back with them." This looks terrifying! Universal + Blumhouse have revealed the first official trailer for the horror sequel The Exorcist Believer. This is the next horror franchise revived by David Gordon Green after his Halloween trilogy. "The Exorcist: Believer is a throwback to early psychological horror movies that I watched as a kid and inspired me. I can't wait for you all to watch in theaters." Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Friday, October 13th, a new chapter begins. Instead of a remake, it's another sequel to the 1973 film about two girls possessed by a mysterious demonic entity, forcing their parents to seek the help of priests to save her. The film stars Leslie Odom, Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, as well as Ellen Burstyn reprising her role as Chris MacNeil. Even though I'm not sure DGG can pull off more horror, this does really look scary. And this modern update involves two girls being possessed, not only one. Meet them both below. // Continue Reading ›

First Trailer for Amusing 'Strange Planet' Series Based on the Comics

Strange Planet Trailer
"The bad moments will pass. Even the good moments will pass." Meet some funny little blue aliens! Apple has unveiled the first official trailer for Strange Planet, an animated series based on the beloved, uber-popular web comic series created by Nathan W. Pyle. He first started drawing and posting these fun little one-or-two frame comics on Instagram (via @nathanwpylestrangeplanet) before turning them into an entire series and graphic novel. Now it has become an animated series for everyone to enjoy! Strange Planet is a hilarious and perceptive look at a distant world not unlike our own. Set in a whimsical world of cotton candy pinks and purples, relatable blue beings explore the absurdity of everyday human traditions. Voicing this world of beings are the Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder, Gotham Award nominee Tunde Adebimpe, Emmy nominee Demi Adejuyigbe, Lori Tan Chinn, and Danny Pudi. This looks quite fun, though the voices seem just a bit off. Not the same as reading the text in the comic, but this still has all the same humor. // Continue Reading ›

Michael Caine & Glenda Jackson in 'The Great Escaper' Dramedy Trailer

The Great Escaper Trailer
"If you want to honor your friend, Bernie... You've spent 70 years loving me. We have never wasted one second of our time together." Pathe has revealed a trailer for a British dramedy titled The Great Escaper, based on a true story from a few years ago. The feel-good film will open in UK cinemas this fall, but there's still no US release date set yet. In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan staged a "great escape" from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, France, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary. The legendary Michael Caine stars as Bernie, which is pretty much perfect casting. Bernie's adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene – The Great Escaper celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation. Also starring Glenda Jackson, John Standing, Danielle Vitalis, Donald Sage Mackay, Laura Marcus, and Ian Conningham. Well this looks wonderful, with another excellent performance from Caine, even though he's 90 years old as well. This one is worth a watch. // Continue Reading ›

Making Sense of Life - On the Philosophy of 'Barbie' & 'Oppenheimer'

On the Philosophy of Barbie & Oppenheimer
"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes." –Proust. Two of the best movies of 2023 are now playing in theaters worldwide: Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Yep – they're both outstanding movies deserving of all the praise, both ambitious and unique and creative, both made by exceptionally talented filmmakers who understand the terrific power of visual storytelling. They may differ in many ways, especially in tone, but they're actually quite similar in many other ways. I am in awe and delighted that we have two of the most philosophical movies I've seen in years, both big budget studio projects, both intellectually stimulating, showing on big screens and drawing big crowds. This is an invigorating moment for cinema that we should relish. What I appreciate the most is how much each film relies on intellectual storytelling, with no desire to pander to audiences or be accessible to everyone. There is so much to discuss about each, and I want to dig into the philosophy present in both films. To borrow a quote on Twitter: "It's not Barbie and Oppenheimer. It's Barbie, and it's Oppenheimer." // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Stronghold' Indie Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller

Stronghold Trailer
"Had a dream last night..." "Dreams don't always make sense." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for Stronghold, an indie post-apocalyptic thriller made by Brazilian filmmaker Julia Camara. This will be available to watch on VOD in August - doesn't look like good enough for theaters anyway. Stronghold is a dystopian tale of resilience in which a young survivalist and her mother live completely isolated in the woods. When a distressed stranger appears, their lives are disrupted and their future threatened. The film stars Bianca A. Santos and Jaqueline Fleming as the familial pair in peril, and Oliver Rayón as the stranger who shows up, plus Keith Allen West and Narineh Tahmasebian. The film premiered at the Pan African Film Festival in LA this year. The dialogue is rough, the plot is derivative - you've been warned. // Continue Reading ›

Review: Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' is Both Hilarious & Thought-Provoking

Barbie Review
The Barbenheimer phenomenon has marked the last few months leading up to this opening weekend in July with exponentially intense levels of excitement. After watching a heavy, haunting Oppenheimer (my review here), nothing like a light, fun Barbie to restore the standard mood... that is, if Greta Gerwig had, in fact, chosen to create a film without any substance. With the help of filmmaker Noah Baumbach (director of Gerwig's Frances Ha and Mistress America) as a co-writer on the script, the filmmaker responsible for memorable movies such as Lady Bird and Little Women takes advantage of the worldwide reach of the most popular doll in history, as well as a packed cast, to deliver one of the most surprising stories of the year. // Continue Reading ›

"We must join together to prevent the schemes of evil men." Falling Forward Films has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a long-awaited independent superhero movie called Legend of the White Dragon, the feature directorial debut of "Super Power Beat Down" filmmaker Aaron Schoenke. This trailer comes from this year's San Diego Comic Con - the project was crowdfunded through Kickstarter and was initially set for 2023. Now it's aiming to open sometime in early 2024. In the film, three years after a tragic battle, Erik Reed returns to his city to protect his wife and daughter from a new threat. It's described as a "mature take on the Power Rangers franchise" and introduces a new universe. The film stars Jason David Frank (in his final role before he passed away late 2022), Aaron Schoenke, Mayling Ng, David Ramsey, Andrew Bachelor, Jason Faunt, Ciara Hanna, Mark Dacascos, and Michael Madsen. The dialogue in this is rough, the footage is cheesy, but it doesn't look as bad as other Power Rangers films. Might be entertaining. // Continue Reading ›

The two-minute video features nothing but sound FX shots from Nolan's movies, all 12 of them he has made so far, edited together to show us how important sound design is. It's a mesmerizing watch, even without any dialogue. Our own critic MSB talked about the outstanding sound work in his Oppenheimer review from yesterday: "In the first few seconds, I could feel the ground shaking, my body vibrating, and my heart pounding." It's so integral to the cinematic experience. There's also a really beautiful moment in this video of silence, reiterating how important silence is in the right scenes. New Trailer for Cult 70s Comedy Thriller 'Winter Kills' with Jeff Bridges

Winter Kills Trailer
"I met the true assassin of my brother." This restoration and re-release of Winter Kills is presented by author/filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, a longtime fan and champion of the movie. Film Forum will play a 35mm restoration of the 70s comedy thriller Winter Kills in August. It's a spin on JFK: the younger brother of an assassinated US President is led down a rabbit hole of conspiracies and dead ends after learning of a man claiming to be the real shooter. There's also more: "the story behind Winter Kills is as convoluted, mysterious and downright incredulous as the movie itself. The two main producers went bankrupt – one was later sent to a federal prison for drug trafficking, the other tied to his bed by a creditor and shot in the head – and production was suspended for two years while" the director found more money. Camera op John Bailey, who oversaw the restoration, says nowadays: "I see it as not only very relevant but eerily prescient." Jeff Bridges stars with John Huston, Anthony Perkins, Eli Wallach, Sterling Hayden, Richard Boone, Toshirō Mifune, and many others. This looks crazy good, and reminds me of The Parallax View. // Continue Reading ›

First Trailer for 'Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance' British Action Film

Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance Trailer
"You're making too much noise, Patrick." Signature Entertainment in the UK has revealed an official trailer for a British action thriller titled Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance, arriving in UK cinemas this September. It's actually a sequel to Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins, a crime thriller telling the "origin story of how Tucker, Rolfie, and Pat Tate unite to form their own firm." In this sequel, Tate goes on a rampage to avenge his loyal & trusted foot soldier's violent death. To track down the villain responsible, Tate ventures beyond his comfort zone of Essex and into the dark side of 90s Soho. He squares up against violent kingpins and negotiates his way through treacherous backstreets with sheer brutal force. He will stop at nothing even as the world around him starts to explode. Craig Fairbrass returns to star as Pat Tate, joined by Jamie Foreman, George Russo, Ben Wilson, Stephen McCole, Sadie Frost, Tara Fitzgerald, ArrDee, and Josh Myers. Brie Larson & Teyonah Parris in Marvel Sequel 'The Marvels' Full Trailer

Marvel Studios has revealed the full official trailer for The Marvels, the highly anticipated sequel to the hit Captain Marvel (from 2019) and also a continuation of the series Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion. The story follows three superheroes: Carol Danvers played by Brie Larson, Kamala Khan played by Iman Vellani, Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris (recast from Lashana Lynch in the original). When they begin swapping places with each other every time they use their powers, the trio must team up to determine why and stop whoever did this. Sounds like fun! Though this trailer is much more serious than comical. The full cast includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Zawe Ashton, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, Gary Lewis, and Park Seo-joon. Review: Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' is a Harrowing Tale of One Man's Life

Oppenheimer Review
Christopher Nolan is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers of this century. His movies are regularly featured in articles about the best films of each year, of each decade, and even some of the best in the history of cinema. For me personally, he's a director whose name alone gets me into the theater every time. Nolan brought narrative complexity to blockbusters, transforming them into impactful stories that left viewers profoundly thinking about what they saw and what happened. The writer / director made audiences all around the world look at the theater experience as something more than an excuse to stuff themselves with popcorn. And he does it once again with Oppenheimer, his 12th feature film since Following in 1998. // Continue Reading ›

We also posted the first teaser a month ago. This grainy series is a fictional version of the actual story of the Lakers and their rise to prominence, kicking things off (in Season 1) on the end of the 1970s to their big NBA World Champion win in 1980. A Peculiar Mystery - 'Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose' Trailer

Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose Trailer
"This is an inexplicable farce!" Saban Films + Paramount have revealed an official trailer for an adventure thriller titled Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, arriving in US theaters to watch starting this September. A (possibly?) true tale set in 1935 , Hungarian-American para-psychologist Nandor Fodor began his investigation of a strange occurrence on the Isle of Man. An average British family, the Irvings, claimed to have been contacted by a mysterious entity at their farm – a talking mongoose named Gef (pronounced "Jeff"). Huh, okay, this is peculiar... Simon Pegg stars as the titular Nandor Fodor, with a cast including Christopher Lloyd, Minnie Driver, Paul Kaye, Ruth Connell, Tim Downie, Gary Beadle, plus Edmund Kingsley as Houdini and Neil Gaiman as the voice of Gef. It seems like a clever parable about "faith" and religion, at least from what I can glean from this trailer. Are these people lying? Is there really a talking mongoose? Or is something else mysterious and nefarious going on here? What do make of all this? // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Vibrant Animated Short 'Horacio' Created by Caroline Cherrier

It premiered at the Annecy Film Festival and first debuted in France in 2020, and is now online to watch thanks to Short of the Week. The film follows a boy who kills another boy, and goes to prison for it. Years ago, Guillaume killed his friend Horacio. During his long prison sentence, Guillaume gradually forgets why he killed him. Then he is released... With the voice of Spider Zed as Guillaume.
