Watch: Stop-Motion Short 'Fulfilament' Following 'Light Bulb' Ideas

Fulfilament Short Film

It's time for something light and charming. Fulfilament is a fun stop-motion animated short film made by a South Wales-based filmmaker named Rhiannon Evans. This originally premiered years ago and played at festivals in 2016, but we're only catching up with it now thanks to our friends at Short of the Week. "Ever wondered where those light bulb moments come from? A lightning bolt from a brainstorm cloud creates a little, lost thought who just wants to find a place to belong but instead discovers what it takes to become a great idea." This is such a cute little short with unique visuals. It's kind of like Pixar's Inside Out, a strange journey through the inner workings of your brain, only if everything was made from light bulbs and metallic materials. Every good idea needs to find the right place in mind to thrive! Enjoy this animated short below. ›››

Intense Trailer for 'Attack on Finland' Action Movie Landing in July

Attack on Finland Trailer

"We made a deal. You broke it." Samuel Goldwyn has revealed the official US trailer for a Finnish action thriller titled Attack on Finland, which is the international release title. It also goes under Omerta 6/12 or 6/12, which is a reference to December 6 the Finnish Independence Day. A celebration during the holiday in Finland takes a tragic turn when the Presidential Palace is attacked and the president is taken hostage. Soon it is clear that the main target behind the attack is a plan to destabilize the security of Europe. That sounds a lot like Finland's version of Olympus Has Fallen or White House Down. The action film's cast includes Jasper Pääkkönen, Nanna Blondell, Sverrir Gudnason, Cathy Belton, Nika Savolainen, Pertti Sveholm, Juhan Ulfsak, Zijad Gracic, Miodrag Stojanović, and Dragomir Mrsic. This looks hyper-stylized and intense, but it also feels a bit made-for-TV in quality. Still may be an entertaining watch. ›››

Another US Trailer for Croatian Film 'Murina' Starring Gracija Filipovic

Murina Trailer

"He forgets about us the moment he boards the plane." Kino Lorber has revealed another new official US trailer for the worth watching Croatian film Murina, now opening in July in the US in just a few months. I highly recommend seeing this when it opens, worth it on the big screen. It initially premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival playing in Director's Fortnight, winner of the Golden Camera award. A Croatian teen tries to replace her controlling father with a wealthy foreigner on a weekend trip to the Adriatic Sea, causing turmoil. She hopes it will help her escape her life at home for something more, but it doesn't go as planned. Starring Gracija Filipovic as Julija, Danica Curcic, Leon Lucev, Cliff Curtis, and Jonas Smulders. I saw this film during TIFF last year and it's fantastic. Excellent cinematography and a riveting story about this young woman fighting back against her misogynistic father. Glad it's playing in theaters soon in the US. ›››

First Trailer for Dysfunctional Indie Comedy 'Because We're Family'

Because We're Family Trailer

"Wherever life takes you, family will always bring you home." An early festival promo trailer has debuted for an indie dramedy called Because We're Family, another dysfunctional family mess of a film to avoid enjoy this summer. This one is premiering in June at the 2022 Dances With Films Festival in LA, for anyone interested in catching this early on. The film follows three siblings that come together during the holidays after the unexpected death of their mother. They reunite and fight over how to deal with the cremation of their mother. "Back under one roof for the holidays, all decency is lost when a feud over her ashes tests the boundaries of family and a Christmas Eve tradition becomes difficult to digest." The indie film stars Angela Stern, Christine Nyhart, Josh Drennen, Tyler Meridith, C. Thomas Howell, Milo Stern, Milana Stern, and Victor Wells. This doesn't look like it offers anything new or different at all, following in the same footsteps as every other film about dysfunctional families recently. There's just a few funny lines here. ›››

Trapped by a Nordic Demon in Horror Film '11th Hour Cleaning' Trailer

11th Hour Cleaning Trailer

"There's something in this house." Screen Media Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror film titled 11th Hour Cleaning, arriving on VOD directly starting in July this summer. It hasn't played at any festivals and will be skipping theaters entirely. "We're always on the hunt for original, genuinely scary horror content, and 11th Hour Cleaning really delivers," they claim. A group of crime scene cleaners struggle to escape a murder house after becoming trapped by an ancient Nordic demon that is hell-bent on driving them insane. "Our goal was to create a horror film with a unique premise steeped in lore as well as connect the audience to the characters in a way to consider some self-reflection." The movie stars Chloe Brooks, Eddie Finlay, Anita Leeman-Torres, Ed Morrone, and Dave Baez. This actually looks pretty cool for a low budget horror flick, although the cinematography isn't great, the rest of it might be scary. Check it out. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey' Doc Series on FLDS

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey Trailer

"It was for our salvation." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a chilling true crime docu series about one of the worst religious institutions ever to operate on American soil - called the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as FLDS. They are an off-shoot from the Mormon religion based in Utah, with an even deeper belief in patriarchal religious values including polygamy. The series will examine the rise of Warren Jeffs in the Fundamentalist Church and his shocking criminal case. An in-depth look into the secretive polygamous sect of the "FLDS" and the rise of self-professed prophet Warren Jeffs. From forced underage marriage and pregnancy to a complete unraveling into an oppressive criminal cult under this madman's rule, this uncovers extraordinary bravery battling tyrannical control in modern America. It is connected to the other TV series called Under the Banner of Heaven, now available to watch, which is also set in the FLDS and covers a freaky true crime story of a murder within. The way this trailer ends with the woman saying everyone will eventually come around and go "what the f*!k" is terrific. Preach! ›››

Tom Hanks is Geppetto in Robert Zemeckis' 'Pinocchio' Movie Teaser

Pinocchio Trailer Disney

"Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight…" Disney has revealed the first teaser trailer for their new live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto. The classic story has been updated many times recently, including with an Italian live-action adaptation, which didn't get good reviews. Plus del Toro has a Netflix version in the works. This new film is a remake of the 1940 Disney animated classic, which is itself based on the 1883 Italian book The Adventures of Pinocchio. Hanks is joined by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, a wooden puppet carved by Geppetto, who is turned into a living puppet by the Blue Fairy. Cynthia Erivo also co-stars with Luke Evans, plus Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as "Honest" John, a deceptive red fox, and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a brand new character. Also with Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana, Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli, and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick. This doesn't look as good as it should, another exact copy of the animated movie from before. It will be debuting direct-to-streaming on Disney+ in early September. ›››

Cannes 2022: I Go to Festivals for the Films, Not for the Celebrities

Cannes 2022

Reading some of the Letterboxd reviews of the films at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, I'm noticing that a growing number of people will mention the celebrity or famous person or actor/actress they were in the same room as, giddy at being near them. Yes, that's how film festivals work - the talented people involved, and tons of other talented people also attending the festival, go see films. If you're not in the same screening as them, you'll probably pass them in the street or in the hallway or catch them dining at a restaurant. But I'm worried we've entered a new era where some people are more obsessed with celebrities they are with the art or cinema they create. I'm here in Cannes for the films. I used to do some interviews, but now I don't do many unless I really, really want to talk to someone I admire. All I want to do is kick back and watch as many film as I can during these two weeks - let's see what these talented filmmakers have been working on. ›››

'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie' 4K 50th Anniversary Trailer

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie 4K Trailer

"I don't think I belong here." The Film Forum in NYC has revealed an official 4K restoration trailer for the iconic, surrealist masterpiece The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, one of the great Luis Buñuel's final films. It originally premiered in 1972, which means it's celebrating its 50th anniversary this year in 2022. It's highly regarded as a cerebral classic dealing with time travel and the bourgeoisie and their never-ending appetite. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie follows a group of dinner guests attempting to dine together, despite continual interruptions involving dreams and repeating scenes. The film is described as Bunuel's "most frivolously witty movie, directed (at the age of 72) with exhilarating ease." The French film stars Fernando Rey, Stéphane Audran, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Paul Frankeur, Delphine Seyrig, Bulle Ogier, Julien Bertheau, and Milena Vukotic. It's one of the most confusing films you'll ever see, but that's also part of the "discreet charm" of figuring it out, and making sense of what Buñuel is saying and offering audiences with this twisted narrative. The brand new 4K restoration will open first at Film Forum's cinema in NYC and hopefully screen at a few other art house theaters around the country later this summer. ›››

Cannes 2022: 'Joyland' is One of the Finest Discoveries of the Fest

Joyland Review

As a passionate cinephile, there's nothing like the elation that comes with stumbling across a film you didn't know much about beforehand, falling completely head over heels in love with it by the end of a screening. Right from the first few ghostly frames of this film, I knew it was something special, and it became more endearing as the story went on. Now that I've seen it, I need to talk about how great this film is. Joyland is the feature debut of the Pakistani filmmaker Saim Sadiq, who has confidently and defiantly established himself with this one film as an exceptionally talented artist that we need to support as he continues making more films. For now, Joyland will be his calling card and it's an absolutely magnificent and enlightening feature about gender roles and how society is evolving across generations. It's one of the finest discoveries of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and I can't wait for audiences around the world to get their chance to see it. ›››

Netflix Series 'Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies & the Internet' Trailer

Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies & the Internet

"There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a new doc series titled in full: Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies and the Internet. This is the latest tech doc creation from acclaimed filmmaker Brian Knappenberger, who has made a handful of excellent docs about the web: We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz, and Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press. This time he takes on misinformation and the erosion of the truth thanks to the internet - split across six episodes covering different topics. "Conspiracy. Fraud. Violence. Murder. What starts out virtual can get real all too quickly--and when the web is worldwide, so are the consequences." Rich with distinctive characters and surprising developments, reality is warped when the ordinary American household collides with a chaotic web of misinformation. I'm glad that Knappenberger is handling this, because he knows the web better than anyone, but I just hope telling these stories actually change things. Because it's getting pretty dire on here. We all need to wake up and start fixing the problems. ›››

Official US Trailer for 'Olga' Film About a Young Ukrainian Gymnast

Olga Trailer

"This is sports, not politics." Kino Lorber has revealed the official US trailer for an indie film titled Olga, which originally premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival in the Critics Week sidebar. With the ongoing war bringing even more attention to Ukraine, film distributors are borrowing this attention to release films related to Ukraine. Olga is about a 15-year-old Ukrainian gymnast exiled in Switzerland, who is working to secure a place at the country's National Sports Center. But when the "Euromaiden" revolt breaks out in the country in early 2014, anxieties rise as her family gets involved. This film isn't about the current evens in Ukraine, but it is about a revolution in 2014 and related to Russia's violent invasion in the country. Olga stars Anastasiia Budiashkina as the gymnast, with Sabrina Rubtsova and Caterina Barloggio. This looks like an important film about Ukraine, about fighting for what's right, and how politics always plays into everything, even if we don't want it to. It alos won the SACD Award at the end of Critics Week last year. ›››

Amusing Second Trailer for 'Baymax!' Spin-Off Set in San Fransokyo

Baymax! Series Trailer

"I guess a hero's job is never done" Disney has debuted a second official trailer for their new Baymax! spin-off animated series coming to Disney+ later in June this summer. This show follows Baymax from the Big Hero 6 movie on adventures around the city of San Fransokyo. The animated movie first opened in 2014, and there was already another animated series previously, but this is the first in-house spin-off series made by Walt Disney Animation Studios specifically. "In each of our six episodes, Baymax just wants to help someone — and a lot of times they don’t want to be helped. He sets out to fix a physical issue that he's identified, and in the process, gets to a deeper, more emotional place and can be almost transformative in that role." Don Hall, the director of the Big Hero 6 movie, is also involved as the creator and writer of the series. It features the voices of Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Maya Rudolph, Emily Kuroda, Lilimar, Zeno Robinson, and Jaboukie Young-White. This looks like amusing Baymax fun for the whole family. ›››

Winners of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival awards, including the coveted Palme d'Or, were revealed at a glamorous ceremony in Cannes, France this weekend. The film took home the top prize in Cannes, besting Belgian director Lukas Dhont with his film Close, as well as Kelly Reichardt, the Dardennes, Albert Serra, and many other favorites among critics. Laure Calamy in French Comedy 'My Donkey, My Lover & I' Trailer

My Donkey, My Lover & I Trailer

"Come on, big boy, move!" Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a French adventure comedy titled My Donkey, My Lover & I, which is one of the most amusing English re-titles I've seen in a while. The original French title is Antoinette dans les Cévennes, and it already opened in France in late 2020. Finally arriving in the US soon this summer. Antoinette, a school teacher, is looking forward to her long planned summer holiday with her married lover Vladimir, the father of one of her pupils. When she learns that Vladimir has to cancel because his wife organized a surprise hiking vacation, Antoinette decides to follow their tracks, accompanied by a protective donkey named Patrick. Sounds like fun, right? Award-winning actress Laure Calamy stars as Antoinette, with a cast featuring Benjamin Lavernhe, Olivia Côte, Marc Fraize, and Louise Vidal. This looks extra kooky and very French, which is exactly why it's so much fun. I guess the donkey is a symbol for the men in her life? Perhaps don't watch this film on a date. ›››

Trailer for 'Becoming a Queen' Doc About Toronto's Queen of Carnival

Becoming a Queen Doc Trailer

"Everybody wants to win." Gravitas Ventures + Callowgrove Ent. have revealed a trailer for a documentary film called Becoming a Queen, made in Canada by filmmaker Chris Strikes. This is opening on VOD in the US coming up in June, after premiering last year at a Canadian film festival. The film is described as an "intimate portrait of one woman’s quest to become Queen of Caribbean Carnival for an unprecedented tenth time in her final competition." Through Joella Crichton's lens we explore expressions of identity, love and family through Caribbean artistry, against a larger society that often lacks understanding of its significance. Becoming a Queen focuses on Joella's attempt to win for her 10th time in a row in the Caribbean Carnival's Queen Competition in Toronto. From design to assemble, this film follows the exhaustive preparations for Joella, her costume designer Kenney Coombs and the tight knit team consisting of her mother, Lou-Ann and older sister, Mischka. This does look like a TV doc, but it seems fascinating following her story nonetheless. ›››

Cannes 2022: Ali Abbasi's Disturbing Iranian Thriller 'Holy Spider'

Holy Spider Review

Religion needs a reckoning. It's time to question whether it's really good for humanity or not. Part of this discussion involves looking at the irrefutable truth about how horrible religion can be. Walking in to see Ali Abbasi's new film Holy Spider at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, I had no idea what I was about to watch. I'm a big fan of Abbasi's last Cannes hit, a wacky weird Swedish trolls fantasy romance called Border. But this film is nothing like that one. Holy Spider is a based-on-a-true-story serial killer thriller that has earned comparisons to David Fincher in it's brutally realistic, unflinching look at murder in modern times. It's an unsettling film that follows both the murderer and the journalist trying to investigate – and stop him since apparently no one else will – this deranged man. But he's devout, and his neighbors like him – even these killings won't change their mind because he's doing it in honor of God. That should make everyone queasy. ›››

Review: Tom Cruise Soars to New Heights in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Top Gun: Maverick Review

Being a lover of the art of cinema and not having the 80s very close to your heart is practically impossible. Culturally impactful movies such as Empire Strikes Back, Die Hard, The Terminator, Back to the Future, and hundreds more were so unforgettable that people who have never seen these movies can still recite their most famous dialogues by memory. Top Gun may not be the first film that comes to mind when going back more than thirty years, but its epic score and energetic male camaraderie maintain the high entertainment levels of a pure blockbuster - not to mention better action sequences than many movies of today. That said, Top Gun: Maverick surpasses the original in every aspect and in every imaginable way. ›››

Official UK Trailer for Immersive 'The Princess' Doc Film About Diana

The Princess Doc Trailer

"It's the media that's causing the problems." Altitude Films in the UK has revealed an official UK trailer for a documentary experience called The Princess, the latest from award-winning doc filmmaker Ed Perkins (Garnet's Gold, Tell Me Who I Am). This first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's opening in June in the UK, though there's still no US date set yet. This doc works as a counter-point to the Spencer film from last year. Princess Diana's story is told exclusively through archive footage to create an immersive narrative about her life and death. It also illuminates how the public's attitude to the monarchy is still fanatical and unwavering. I saw this during Sundance and really dug it - "It doesn't exactly say anything new that we don't already know, but it's a genuine experience to get lost in this film. It makes you feel like you're part of the problem being an observer watching all of this footage." Check it out below. ›››

Cannes 2022: Kelly Reichardt Sculpts Dull & Aimless 'Showing Up'

Showing Up Review

Sometimes we really do need some direction in life. Wandering around without any real plans or hopes or dreams can only take you so far - wisdom for all of us to consider. One of the last films to premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival is the latest from acclaimed American indie filmmaker Kelly Reichardt, her highly anticipated follow-up to the award-winning First Cow. As a huge fan of First Cow, and an admirer of her early minimal films like Old Joy and Wendy & Lucy, I was looking forward to seeing what she has been working on. Alas, Showing Up one of her worst films so far, an aimless and drab creation that is nothing more than a meandering showcase of entirely uninteresting artists who have never made anything of value but still keep going. It seems after First Cow all she could possibly think of was to film in her own backyard, walking around her neighborhood and honestly, I hope she never does this again. Please go anywhere else. ›››

Cannes 2022: Lukas Dhont's Beautiful & Emotionally Vibrant 'Close'

Close Review

There's only so much I can really talk about with this film in a review from the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, because it's one of these vitally important works of cinema that you must see for yourself. I don't want to spoil it or discuss too much before everyone else has the opportunity to watch it, because the discussions are best once you've watched it as well. The most I can do now is talk about how beautiful this film is, how much it's a genuine work of art that exemplifies all of what cinema can and should be. How it utilizies emotional storytelling as a way to offer audiences hope to heal and understand, to empathize and sympathize with the characters. You may not even be able to realize just how this film will get stuck in your mind, how it will linger and affect you for months and years after. The power of extraordinary cinema. Official Trailer for Marco Bellocchio's Personal Doc 'Marx Can Wait'

Marx Can Wait Doc Trailer

"There's that mystery." Strand has unveiled a new official US trailer for Marx Can Wait, a very personal documentary made by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio. Some will recognize his name, but this isn't anything like his usual work. 1968 was the year Camillo died. Nearly 50 years after the death of his twin brother at the age of 29, Marco Bellocchio gathers his family to reconstruct Camillo’s disappearance. Combining intimate conversations with the Bellocchio family and those who knew him best with archival material, family movies and his own oeuvre, Marco attempts to manifest a ghost he has been dealing with his entire life. What begins as a family conversation morphs into a study on grief, guilt and responsibility, compassion, empathy, and love. "Marx Can Wait is an attempt at reconciliation and understanding from a filmmaker in his eighties whose work has never shied away from the challenging or the provocative." This first premiered in Cannes last year and will be out in theaters in the US later this summer. View more below. ›››

Cannes 2022: Kore-eda Follows Another Unique Family in 'Broker'

Broker Review

Is there anything new I can say about the wonderful Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda that hasn't already been said by more adept film critics? Not really. He's beloved and so many critics have analyzed him in great depth already. His talent isn't in question, we know he's a master filmmaker, it's only whether each new film he makes is interesting or worthwhile. Broker is Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest feature, premiering at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the main competition section where just 4 years ago he already won the coveted Palme d'Or (for the film Shoplifters). Broker is actually set in Korea and filmed in Korean, marking the first time that the Japanese director has made a Korean film, but it's still as wonderful as ever. Even if he's telling pretty much the same story as Shoplifters, following a pieced-together family of lonely people - most of them orphans who have found solace and comfort in their amusing renegade family they've formed. ›››

Diego Luna Returns in First Look Teaser for 'Andor' Star Wars Series

Andor Series Teaser

"People are standing up." "That's what a reckoning sounds like." Disney has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Andor, the new spin-off series from Rogue One focusing on the character of Cassian Andor - a rebel spy. This is one of Disney's next new Star Wars series coming to streaming this summer, landing on Disney+ to watch right after the Obi-Wan Kenobi series wraps up these next few months. Set five years before the events of Rogue One, the series follows rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion. It's showurn by writer Tony Gilroy, which is a huge get for this. Diego Luna returns to stars as Andor, with a cast featuring Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, as well as Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma; plus Forest Whitaker back as Saw Gerrera, veteran of the Clone Wars and the leader of a militant insurgent group. This looks like an ensemble thriller about various people rising into the Rebellion, which is right on the zeitgeist and very much an inspiring concept for these days. ›››

First Look Teaser for Disney's New 'Willow' Series with Warwick Davis

Willow Series Trailer

"The world needs you again. It needs your magic." Disney has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for their new Willow series, finally set to debut in November in the fall this year. This is a continuation of the story from the beloved 1988 classic Willow, starring Warwick Davis as the dwarf hero Willow Ufgood. I am a HUGE fan of the original movie, and I am curious to see if this series maintains the same spirit and vibe. Not much is known about the plot, only that "a new adventure begins" and the story follows a princess going on a quest to rescue her brother. The new ensemble cast includes Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Ruby Cruz, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Dempsey Bryk, in addition to Davis being back. I'm not exactly impressed by this teaser, but I'm still hopeful this will be an entertaining series to watch anyway. And maybe it'll get some younger kids to go and watch the original again. Because it still rules! Always will. ›››

First Teaser Trailer for 'Devotion' About Two Elite Navy Fighter Pilots

Devotion Teaser Trailer

"What are you fighting for?" "Hoping to find that out." Sony Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for Devotion, another new intense fighter pilot thriller coming this year - following the opening of Top Gun Maverick in theaters this weekend. Of course they drop the first trailer for this during Top Gun opening weekend! Makes sense. A pair of U.S. Navy fighter pilots risk their lives during the Korean War and become some of the Navy's most celebrated wingmen. Devotion tells the true story of Jesse L. Brown, as played by Jonathan Majors, a pioneering Black Naval aviator who flew during the Korean War (1950-1953), and built an unexpected bond with fellow Naval aviator Tom Hudner, played by Glen Powell - who is also in Top Gun Maverick. The main cast includes Spencer Neville, Christina Jackson, Thomas Sadoski, Joseph Cross, Daren Kagasoff, Serinda Swan, and Joe Jonas. Oh yeah this looks EXCELLENT! I had a good feeling about this one, I have been a fan of Dillard all along. This is some awesome first look footage. ›››

Trailer for Horror 'Abandoned' with Emma Roberts & Michael Shannon

Abandoned Trailer

"It's this house… I don't feel like I'm alone here." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror drama titled Abandoned, which marks the feature directorial debut of Spencer Squire. He rounded up quite an impressive cast for this film, which is not easy when it's your first. It opens in theaters starting in June for anyone curious to give it a watch. After a young couple moves into a remote farmhouse with their infant son, the woman's struggles with postpartum psychosis begin to intensify… as the house reveals secrets of its own. It seems to have its own dark, tragic history. The film stars Emma Roberts and John Gallagher Jr., with Paul Schneider and Michael Shannon. This looks super creepy, but it also looks like so many other "new home, but is it haunted?" thrillers recently. Might still be scary? Take a look. ›››

Pedro Correa Inherits an Apartment Complex in 'My Dead Dad' Trailer

My Dead Dad Trailer

"I feel like everybody knew him except me." HBO has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled My Dead Dad, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Fabio Frey. It's co-written and produced by Pedro Correa, who also stars in it as the main character. It premiered at the 2021 Woodstock Film Festival last year, and screened at numerous other fests including Austin, Mill Valley, and Filmocracy Fest where it won the Audience Award. A burnout discovers his estranged father has died, leaving him the responsibility of managing an apartment complex. With hopes of cutting ties, he's forced to grow up, learning about the dad he never knew through the eclectic tenants. Starring Pedro Correa with Raymond Cruz, Courtney Dietz, Simon Rex, Booboo Stewart, Steven Bauer, Chris Pontius, Nicholas Duvernay, and Nate Jackson. This would probably be a bit better if it had more humor in it, as this trailer seems so depressing. ›››

Cannes 2022: Park Chan-wook's Tender Thriller 'Decision to Leave'

Decision to Leave Review

Falling in love is unique to each and everyone one of us, indescribable and yet extraordinary. We all express our love differently, and interact with our loved ones in our own special ways. How do you capture this on camera? Filmmakers have been telling love stories on the big screen since the very beginning of cinema, and it's a vital element of the evolution of cinema. Which brings us to the newest example of cinema evolving through a love story. Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is already well known and loved, celebrated for his iconic Vengeance series (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) from the early 2000s. As we all grow older, I believe that most people get softer and sweeter, becoming more romantic and tender as they appreciate the little things in life that continue to bring them joy and warmth day after day. It seems as if Park has evolved as well, with his latest film Decision to Leave he's made a surprisingly tender film that isn't as dark or as twisted as the rest of the features in his oeuvre, but is still as masterful and moving. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song' Doc

Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song

"Unlocking the mysteries of life was his primary preoccupation." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the official trailer for the documentary film titled Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song, which premiered at both the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals last year. Yes, they made an entire doc about one song! But it's about so much more than that. Hallelujah examines the legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen through the lens of the hymn "Hallelujah," arguably his most famous and certainly most covered work. Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Judy Collins, Regina Spektor, Amanda Palmer, and Eric Church, among others, appear in the documentary and have all recorded and performed their own versions of the emotional song. Other interviewees include his long-time artistic collaborator Sharon Robinson; John Lissauer, arranger of the original version of "Hallelujah"; record industry legend Clive Davis; and Larry "Ratso" Sloman, an ex-Rolling Stone reporter, who shares never-before-heard, unedited tapes of interviews he recorded with Cohen between 1974-2005. It looks quite good! A worthy doc about the glory of one song. ›››

Cannes 2022: 'Moonage Daydream' is a Mind-Expanding Experience

Moonage Daydream Review

There's only one David Bowie – no one else has ever been like him, no one will ever be like him again. A one-of-a-kind artist, creator, human (maybe? maybe not?), lover, dreamer, musician. How do you tell his story? Is it even possible? Probably not. It's better to not even try - there is so much about him that can't be explained, that can't be described in words. Moonage Daydream is a documentary about David Bowie, but it's not really a biopic, and it's not really a documentary. Much like Bowie himself, it's a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that will blow you away. It's a profound experience - one of the most moving viewings I've had at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Emerging from the cinema it's like entering a whole new world, with a new outlook on life and fresh perspective. It's a mind-melting, cosmically existential journey through Bowie's existence & endlessly wise mind. The epitome of a cinematic experience in every way. Amazing. ›››

Idris Elba Fights Off a Massive Rogue Lion in Thriller 'Beast' Trailer

Beast Trailer

"It's the law of the jungle! It's the only law that matters." Universal has debuted the first official trailer for Beast, a new angry lion movie from director Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep, 2 Guns, Everest, The Oath). This reminds me of the 90s hit The Ghost and the Darkness, also about rogue lions attacking people with a similar intensity as this one. Idris Elba stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. Iyana Halley plays Daniels' 18-year-old daughter, Meredith, and Leah Sava Jeffries plays his 13-year-old, Norah. Also co-starring Sharlto Copley as the local game reserve manager. There's only two or three real shots of the lion in this trailer, which is obviously CGI. And the final scene in this very much seems like a Jurassic Park riff in the truck when the T-Rex attacks them. Check it out below. ›››

Chilling Off-Grid Thriller 'Neon Lights' Trailer Starring Dana Abraham

Neon Lights Trailer

"A brilliant mind is its own worst enemy." Momentum Pics has revealed a new trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Neon Lights, from an Iranian-Canadian filmmaker named Rouzbeh Heydari. This is opening on VOD in July in this US this summer. Guests begin disappearing in an off-grid location, during a family reunion of misfit siblings and their offspring. The film follows a tech tycoon, as played by the co-writer & producer of the film, who retreats to an off the grid location in search of meaning and peace. I wonder if it's another fantasy tale about how wealthy tech businessman are actually the real assholes? Starring Dana Abraham, Brenna Coates, Brit MacRae, Stephen Tracey, Rene Escobar Jr, Lauren Howe, Kim Coates, & Erika Swayze. The colored rooms are pretty cool, but the rest of it seems rather uninteresting. ›››

Gabriel Byrne in Western 'Murder at Yellowstone City' Official Trailer

Murder at Yellowstone City Trailer

"The necessary end will come… when it will come." RLJE Films has unveiled an official trailer for a new western thriller called Murder at Yellowstone City, made by an Australian filmmaker named Richard Gray (of Sugar Mountain, Broken Ghost, Robert the Bruce). It opens in theaters and on VOD together at the end of June for anyone interested in watching. A former slave who arrives in Yellowstone City, Montana, a desolate former boomtown now on the decline, looking for a place to call home. On that same day, a local prospector discovers gold - then he's murdered. As more brutal murders continue, pitting neighbor against neighbor, Yellowstone City goes down a bloody path to a final showdown that not all will survive. The film stars Gabriel Byrne, Thomas Jane, Isaiah Mustafa, Anna Camp, Aimee Garcia, Emma Kenney, with Nat Wolff, and Richard Dreyfuss. This looks like your standard western with a mean Sheriff and all the usual suspects in town getting into all kinds of trouble. Looks better than most of these but not by much. ›››

Space Station Sci-Fi Survival Thriller 'Rubikon' Trailer from Austria

Rubikon Trailer

"It's your job to keep us alive." IFC Midnight has revealed the official trailer for a new sci-fi thriller titled Rubikon, produced in Austria and made by an Austrian filmmaker making her feature directorial debut. This is opening on VOD and in theaters starting in July this summer in the US for anyone curious to watch. Following an environmental catastrophe on Earth in the near future, the planet is covered in a toxic fog. The crew living up in the space station must decide whether to risk their own lives to get home and search for survivors, or stay safe in the station's "algae symbiosis system". Good question? "Against the vast canvas of the cosmos, three people with different worldviews debate their moral responsibility to the species, all while grappling with the timely agony of isolation." The film stars Julia Franz Richter, George Blagden, and Mark Ivanir. I'm getting a bit tired of these so many of these sci-fi "moral quandary" thrillers because they all seem so proud but in the end the movie is forgettable because it's always the same conclusion every time. ›››

First Trailer for 'The Gray Man' Action Movie Starring Ryan Gosling

The Gray Man Trailer

It's time to finally meet The Gray Man. Netflix has unveiled the intense official trailer for an international action thriller comedy titled The Gray Man, the new movie from Avengers directors The Russo Brothers. After working with Marvel on four movies, they went off and started a production company called AGBO, and made the movie Cherry recently. This next one is for Netflix with a theatrical release planned in July before it's streaming. When the CIA's most skilled operative – whose true identity is unknown – accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, a psychopathic former colleague puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins. Ryan Gosling stars as "The Gray Man" and Chris Evans plays his psychopathic adversary. Also co-starring Ana de Armas, with Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, and Alfre Woodard. I'm glad to see the Russos bring us some kick ass action this summer!! Looks like it's going to be badass, especially with Evans' nice mustache. ›››

Freddie Gibbs Becomes a Farmer in 'Down with the King' Film Trailer

Down with the King Trailer

"I don't know if I'm ready to jump back on stage yet." Sony has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Down with the King, which originally premiered last year and is finally arriving to watch on VOD coming soon this summer. It first premiered in the 2021 Cannes Film Festival sidebar selection known as ACID, and it also played at the Deauville Film Festival and American Film Festival in Poland last year. Real-life rapper Freddie Gibbs stars as a famous rapper named Money Merc in the film. Disillusioned with the music industry and the pressures of being a celebrity, he leaves the city and his career behind to find himself in a small-town farming community in the Berkshires. This sounds great! The cast includes Bob Tarasuk, Jamie Neumann, David Krumholtz, and Sharon Washington. This is exactly the kind of premise for a film that I enjoy, and glad this isn't some dumb comedy. It looks like a sensitive and truthful drama about the simplicity of farming vs the chaos of a famous music life. I'm curious to see what he decides by the end. ›››

Cannes 2022: Davy Chou's Superb 'Return to Seoul' About Adoption

Return to Seoul Review

There have been many films made before about what it's like to be an adopted child from a far away country, how hard it is and all the psychological challenges that come with it. But there has never been a film like this before, telling a brutally honest story of one young Korean woman who grew up in France and her struggles with emotions. Return to Seoul (originally Retour à Séoul in France) is the second feature film made by filmmaker Davy Chou, who seems to be telling a story similar to his own about being raised in France as an adoptee. It's also going under alternate the English title All the People I'll Never Be, and it's premiering at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. Unlike many other films about adoptees, everything doesn't get better when they go home and rediscover their original country or find their parents, it's not a feel-good story of redemption and rediscovery. It's a much harsher look at how hard it is to try and meet or find the biological parents, and how much this can mess with the minds of those struggling with it. ›››

Full Trailer for Marvel's 'Thor: Love and Thunder' from Taika Waititi

Thor: Love and Thunder Trailer

"In Gods We Trust!" Let's go! Disney has debuted the full-length official trailer for Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder, the next big Marvel sequel directed by Taika Waititi following his fantastic Thor: Ragnarok from 2017. The film finds the God of Thunder on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg (!!), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth back as Thor, plus Taika Waititi as Korg, Natalie Portman who finally gets into the action, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karen Gillan, Russell Crowe as Zeus, Sean Gunn, and Chris Pratt as Star Lord. I am SO glad they let Taika make another wacky Thor movie because this looks absolutely fabulous in every way, shape, & form! Hilariously original comedy along with some crazy twists and turns in the story. This is going to be a blast. ›››

Vengeance Trailer

"The problem is that these people aren't smart, the problem is that they are." Focus Features has unveiled an official trailer for Vengeance, marking the feature directorial debut of actor B.J. Novak, known from The Office and Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. The film is debuting as a centerpiece premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this summer. It's described as "a darkly comic thriller" about Ben Manalowitz, a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with. From this trailer, it's obvious that there is more going on and he gets in over his head trying to make a true crime podcast learning about real crime. Novak also wrote the script and stars with an ensemble cast including Issa Rae, Ashton Kutcher, Boyd Holbrook, J. Smith-Cameron, and Dove Cameron. Cannes 2022: Fighting Cynicism in 'Three Thousand Years of Longing'

Three Thousand Years of Longing Review

What does your heart truly desire? If you were asked this question on the spot, right now, would you be able to answer it? Would it be the actual, deep down truth? Or is the answer so complex and frightening that it's not easy to say without prying into the many dark twists & turns throughout our lives? George Miller's latest movie is a glorious, ambitious, one-of-a-kind creation called Three Thousand Years of Longing that explores this question (and others) by taking us on a journey with one lonely woman who is presented with this very provocation. She doesn't want to admit she is lonely, she claims to be content and satisfied being all by herself, but with time and understanding, she admits it. Deep down I wonder if it's true that we all wish for someone to be with, or something to take away that loneliness that I know we all feel. But some of us are more open to admitting this than others… And some are so afraid of always being lonely that they pretend they're totally fine with it and never confront these feelings. Perhaps meeting a Djinn could help…? ›››

Amazing 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning' Part 1 First Trailer

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

"Your days of fighting for the so called 'greater good' are over." Paramount has unveiled the incredible first official trailer for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, the 7th movie in this ongoing M:I franchise. As everyone knows, they shot both of the next movies back-to-back - Dead Reckoning: Part One and Part Two, opening in the summers of 2023 and 2024. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt formerly of the IMF, off on more covert missions to save the world. The spectacular stunts are even more exhilarating this time, using real trains and practical sets, along with Cruise himself performing his own stunts. The ensemble cast for Part One features Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, and Cary Elwes. This is one of the best trailers we'll see all year, hands down. I love that they went entirely with the theme music, letting all of the phenomenal footage speak for itself. Stunning Teaser Trailer for New David Bowie Doc 'Moonage Daydream'

Moonage Daydream Teaser

"It's what you do in life that's important, not how much time you have." Neon has revealed the first teaser trailer for Moonage Daydream, a David Bowie biopic documentary arriving in theaters later this year. This teaser drops just ahead of the film's world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival later this week. Featuring never-before-seen footage and performances, filmmaker Brett Morgen examines David Bowie's creative, musical and spiritual side. It's the very first biopic authorized by the Bowie estate, described as "a cinematic odyssey exploring David Bowie’s creative and musical journey." With unfiltered access to Bowie's archives, including all his master recordings, they spent five years constructing a genre-defying "cinematic experience" that grapples with spirituality, transience, isolation, creativity, and time to reveal the celebrated icon in his own voice. I am a huge fan of the doc director Brett Morgen, especially after Jane which was an exceptional film. And this looks like it's going to be yet another unforgettable cinematic + aural experience. ›››

Cannes 2022: Ruben Östlund Sinks Capitalism in 'Triangle of Sadness'

Triangle of Sadness

So this is what happens when you put a bunch of rich assholes on a big yacht! Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund is one of my favorite filmmakers these days - he's a genius when it comes to satire and mocking the most absurd parts of society. He makes films that say what you shouldn't say, that directly call out the bullshit, and then fling that bullshit around right back into everyone's face. Östlund already won the Palme d'Or in Cannes a few years ago with his comedy The Square, and already earned acclaim and tons of awards for Force Majuere from 2014. He's pretty much free to do whatever he wants now and his new film is titled Triangle of Sadness, which is an odd name for a film about a yacht full of rich assholes. That's because the name is a reference to the patch of skin between the eyes and the nose, most prominent in models who need to downplay their triangles of sadness. Look sharp and pretend you love capitalism, folks! All aboard. ›››

Cannes 2022: Lola Quivoron's 'Rodeo' is an Impressive Feature Debut

Rodeo

Every year there are a handful of top notch films that premiere at major film festivals that are so impressive it's hard to believe they're the first feature film made by the filmmakers behind them. Earlier this year it was Fresh slicing it up at Sundance, directed by Mimi Cave; and last year it was The Lost Daughter, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (she even won the DGA Award for Best First Feature). Watch these films and they seem to be made by exceptionally talented directors with years of experience directing many other films, as they know how to craft scenes and hone the narrative at the same level as the best filmmakers out there. At this year's Cannes Film Festival, Rodeo is one of the most impressive feature debuts - joining these others as a stand out film that feels like it was made by someone who has made plenty of films before. In reality, this really is French filmmaker Lola Quivoron's feature directorial debut - and it's a gripping & exhilarating film. ›››

Another Trailer for Marvel's 'Ms. Marvel' Series Starring Iman Vellani

Ms. Marvel Trailer

"If you save one life… you save the world." Disney has debuted another new 60-second "Destiny" trailer for a new Marvel Studios series Ms. Marvel, a sort of spin-off from Captain Marvel, similar to the Hawkeye series about a nerdy fan of the Avengers who ends up becoming a superhero herself. Ms. Marvel introduces us to Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, a 16-year-old Muslim Pakistani-American from Jersey City, NJ who writes superhero fan fiction. She discovers she has her own polymorphous (shape-shifting) powers. The series cast also includes Aramis Knight as "Red Dagger", Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Matt Lintz, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, and Azhar Usman. You know, I honestly think this looks pretty dang good. Like Hawkeye, I wasn't expecting to be into it, but I thoroughly enjoyed that series and there were a few outstanding episodes. Ms. Marvel might just be worth a watch, too. ›››
