Watch: Experimental Animated Short 'Pile' About Humanity's Growth

Humanity. What have we become? What is real anymore? This mesmerizing short film explores this idea in only three minutes. Pile is an experimental animated short film created by an animation filmmaker named Toby Auberg, also known as "Toberg", who finished this project last year after two years of work putting it together on his own. "Simple to complex. Concrete to abstract. Dirt to clouds. Real to unreal." The short follows a diorama from the bottom all the way up, showing humanity's progress - both good and bad. Over the course of making it, the project "shifted into a piece more about abstraction and a map of overlapping contrasts in the human condition, such as the directions of history, economic stratification, the hierarchy of needs, infrastructure, etc." I'm in awe of how much is going on - layer upon layer upon later. Badass Stop-Motion Film 'Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires' Trailer

"I work alone!" Animortal Studio has revealed an official UK trailer for a totally gnarly, crazy badass stop-motion action horror film called Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, written & directed by animator Mike Mort. This originally premiered in 2018 at the Annecy Film Festival (where I first saw it) and at the Sitges Film Festival, but has never been released since then. Which is a shame because this film rocks! A full-on, R-rated, guts & gore, stop-motion 80s throwback. Set in 1986, the film follows a cop named "Chuck Steel", who must fight off forces of evil when a scourge of Trampires – a mutated hybrid of vampire and tramp – start to take over the city. The film's voice cast includes director Mike Mort as Chuck Steel, along with Jennifer Saunders, Paul Whitehouse, Dan Russell, Jonnie Fiori, and Samantha Coughlan. I've been waiting for this to get a release so I can rave about it and tell everyone to watch! It's only opening in the UK initially this fall, but hopefully not long after in the US. When this premiered at TIFF, they didn't allow it to be screened for press, for better or worse. I'm definitely curious! Watch: Digging in the Dirt to Find Treasure - 'The Diamond' Short Doc

"A lot of things go through your head when you're sitting here going through stuff." Would you go hunting for diamonds in the dirt if you knew you could actually find one worth some good money? The Diamond is a clever, fascinating short documentary film made by filmmaker Caitlyn Greene. The film is about a place in Arkansas called the Crater of Diamonds State Park (find it on Google Maps) where anyone can freely search for and/or mine diamonds, as well as other rocks and minerals located in an ancient volcanic crater. Greene set out to make a film about people who go there and try to dig for them. She explains: "Some people find substantial diamonds, some don't, and either way, it takes a lot of digging in the dirt. I was immediately hooked." Adding that, "I was interested in the hope of treasure, the grittiness of searching, and what people there were actually looking for in their lives." Deep. A24 has revealed an official trailer for the film The Souvenir: Part II, a follow-up to the 2019 film The Souvenir, both of them written and directed by filmmaker Joanna Hogg. This premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year playing in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, and is also stopping by the Zurich, New York, and London Film Festivals this fall before its release. This is a direct sequel to The Souvenir, continuing the story of Julie, a young filmmaker in England trying to pick up the pieces of her life after a manipulative, destructive relationship (as seen in the first film) ends abruptly. Honor Swinton Byrne returns as Julie, who tries to make a film about her own life, with a cast including Jaygann Ayeh, Richard Ayoade, Ariane Labed, James Spencer Ashworth, Harris Dickinson, Charlie Heaton, Joe Alwyn, and Tilda Swinton. New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Horror 'Cure'

"People like to think a crime has meaning. But most of them don't." Criterion Collection has launched a new trailer for a 4K restoration and re-release of the Japanese horror masterpiece called Cure, from filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa. This originally premiered in 1997, and played at the Tokyo Film Festival, San Francisco & Toronto Film Festivals, though it never had a release in the west until 2001. Praised by Martin Scorsese, it's a "hypnotic & psychological" cinema experience that is "part atmospheric crime film and part philosophical meditation." The story follows a detective investigating a string of gruesome murders where an X is carved into the neck of each victim, and the murderer is found near the victim of each case and remembers nothing of the crime. The film stars Kōji Yakusho, Tsuyoshi Ujiki, Anna Nakagawa, and Masato Hagiwara. He is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist with the help of a misfit crew of aspiring thieves. In addition to Schweighöfer, this also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen. Dieter is one of my favorite characters from Army of the Dead, and I'm looking forward to seeing him take on a heist movie. Announcement for Action Sequel 'Extraction 2' with Chris Hemsworth

Drawn to an Alternate Dimension in Trippy 'The Blazing World' Trailer

"Darkness eats, darkness keeps." Vertical has released an official trailer for the film The Blazing World, marking the feature directorial debut of actress / filmmaker Carlson Young. This first premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year. Decades after the accidental drowning of her twin sister, a self-destructive young woman returns to her family home, drawn to an alternate dimension where her sister may still be alive. Sundance then adds: "Through an epic journey down the smokiest and scariest corridors of her imagination, she tries to exorcise the demons pushing her closer and closer to the edge." Freaky! HBO has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled 15 Minutes of Shame, exploring the tricky topic of cancel culture and internet shaming. Most interestingly, the HBO documentary film is narrated by and executive produced by Monica Lewinsky, someone who is definitely familiar with internet shaming. She's already written books about it and talked about it plenty before. The groundbreaking documentary 15 Minutes of Shame takes an in-depth look at the public shaming epidemic in our culture and explores our collective need to destroy one another. The film not only talks with some of those who've been shamed, but also explores the bullies, the bystanders, the media, psychologists, politicians and experts in between. Best of the Fest - 6 Favorite Films from the 2021 Venice Film Festival

Each year, I am incredibly lucky and privileged to return to the spectacular city of Venice in Italy to attend the Venice Film Festival and catch the latest films premiering there. Venice is over and looking back at the line-up, it's time to present my quick picks of my favorite films from Venice 2021. This was my fifth year in a row back to Venice, I even stopped by last year during the pandemic, and I spent every single day at screenings all day. They always show two new films in the morning, along with lots of other screenings in the evening to catch. In total, I watched 28 films at Venice this year, and while it wasn't the best selection, I'm always glad to have the chance to watch them anyway. The fest kicked off with Pedro Almodóvar's latest, Parallel Mothers (watch the trailer), which I didn't care much for. Then continued on for another 10 days, and I was there right up until the end. The lives of ten strangers intersect through a terrifying chain of events as a mutating fungus begins to spread through a small town wiping out everyone that comes into contact with it. The ensemble horror film stars Jeannie Jefferies, Haley Heslip, Peter Tell, Jackson Ezinga, Jovonnah Nicholson, and Justin Golinsky.
