Hiding Out in a Demon Escort's Dungeon in Indie Horror 'Val' Trailer

Val Trailer

"You like that, don't you? Being dangerous." Dread Presents has revealed the first official trailer for a funky horror film titled Val, from filmmaker Aaron Fradkin. Not to be confused with the excellent documentary Val about Val Kilmer, this is a feature film that dips into something else entirely. Fin is a wanted criminal for the murder of his boss. He decides to hide out with a high class escort named Val, who's really a demon. Val offers to make his problems disappear if he follows her rules. She has been expecting him all along and it won’t be easy to escape Val's dungeon. Misha Reeves stars as the titular Val, short for Valefar, joined by Zachary Mooren as Fin, with Erik Griffin, Sufe Bradshaw, Kyle Howard, and John Kapelos. This is a very kinky, wacky concept that looks simultaneous extremely cheesy and seriously terrifying. Have fun. ›››

New US Trailer for France's 'De Gaulle' Biopic with Lambert Wilson

De Gaulle Trailer

"If history makes men, some men make history." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official US trailer for the French biopic drama De Gaulle, about the legendary French politician Charles de Gaulle. The film takes place during World War II, just as France is dealing with the Nazi army invading their country. It already opened in France last year, and is finally arriving in the US this fall. Set in France, June 1940. The de Gaulle couple is confronted with the military and political collapse of France… Charles de Gaulle joins London while Yvonne, his wife, finds herself with her three children on the road of the exodus. Starring Lambert Wilson (from The Matrix Reloaded, Catwoman, Babylon A.D., Benedetta) as Charles de Gaulle, with a cast including Isabelle Carré as his wife Yvonne, plus Olivier Gourmet, Catherine Mouchet, Pierre Hancisse, Sophie Quinton, Gilles Cohen, Laurent Stocker, Philippe Laudenbach, and Tim Hudson as Churchill. This French biopic seems as campy as most American biopics. Still worth a look. ›››

A New Vision of Terror: James Wan's Horror 'Malignant' Second Trailer

Malignant Trailer

"You've got to take chances, if you don't know you end making the same old thing again and again and again." Warner Bros has debuted the second trailer for Malignant, the new horror thriller from James Wan, returning to his roots with another original creation. This was initially set to open last summer, but was delayed due to the pandemic - now arriving in theaters + on HBO Max in September (watch the first trailer again). In this "new vision of terror", Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities. The cast includes Annabelle Wallis as Madison, Jake Abel, George Young, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mckenna Grace, Maddie Hasson, Ingrid Bisu, and Michole Briana White. This still seems to be a mix of Ring and A Nightmare on Elm Street, but with its own creepy twists and turns. I'm glad they included the clip of James Wan in this, because I love hearing his words about how unique and freaky this new horror movie is. ›››

First Trailer for Acclaimed Film 'Mass' with Jason Isaacs & Ann Dowd

Mass Trailer

"You say you want to heal… Is this how?" Bleecker Street Films has finally unveiled an official trailer for an acclaimed indie drama titled Mass, which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It received rave reviews from a number of critics, who are still saying this is one of their top films of the year so far. Years after an unspeakable tragedy tore their lives apart, two sets of parents agree to talk privately in an attempt to move forward. These two parents each come different sides of a school shooting (this trailer hints at what that means) and they meet in a church hoping to talk about things and try to bury the past. But it's not easy. Mass stars Reed Birney & Martha Plimpton, plus Ann Dowd & Jason Isaacs. This cast is phenomenal and these are some of the best performances you'll see in any film this year. It's a powerful film about an important topic in America, and broaches this conversation in a riveting, deeply moving way. ›››

US Trailer for Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Hitchcockian Thriller 'Wife of a Spy'

Wife of a Spy Trailer

"I called you here to tell you to be prepared." Kino Lorber has revealed an official US trailer for a Japanese thriller called Wife of a Spy, which initially premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival last year. The film won a Silver Lion award there for Best Director, given to prolific Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who works non-stop making films – his latest was To the Ends of the Earth before this. Kurosawa's Wife of a Spy is described as a "riveting, gorgeously crafted, old-school Hitchockian thriller shot in stunning 8K." A Japanese merchant leaves his wife behind in order to travel to Manchuria just before the start of WWII, where he witnesses an act of barbarism. His subsequent actions cause misunderstanding, jealousy and legal problems for his wife. When she finally discovers his true intentions, she is torn between loyalty to her husband, the life they have built, and the country they call home. Final US Trailer for Bond Movie 'No Time to Die' Starring Daniel Craig

No Time to Die Trailer

"Nothing can prepare you for the epic conclusion." Eon Productions has released a "final US trailer" for No Time to Die, the 25th Bond movie and the fifth movie starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007. We featured numerous trailers last year but after many delays the release date has been reset for October this fall. This final trailer wraps up Daniel Craig's Bond era much like a Marvel trailer. When No Time to Die begins, Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous tech. The cast includes Jeffrey Wright as Felix, Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw as Q; plus Rami Malek, Ana de Armas, Léa Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Billy Magnussen, Rory Kinnear, and David Dencik. I really hope this one is worth the wait, but from the looks of it, it might just be. This looks epic indeed - and all the teases in this new trailer are quite intriguing. Bring on Daniel Craig Bond's finale. ›››

'Fire Music: The Story of Free Jazz' Music History Documentary Trailer

Fire Music: The Story of Free Jazz Trailer

"For the avant-garde, it was liberating. It just changed everything." Submarine Ent. has debuted the doc trailer for Fire Music: The Story of Free Jazz, about the exciting free jazz movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s. This music history documentary is opening in select theaters starting in September. This incredible music documentary focuses on a new form of jazz that began in 1959. This new jazz was separate from the happy sounding commercial jazz music that made jazz a well known music genre all over the world. This free jazz sound was angrier and more emotional because the music reflected the turbulent times. The musicians behind this free jazz sound were ignored by mainstream media and as a result created their own subculture. Today free jazz has the largest audience in its 50 year plus history. Fire Music will stand as the first serious film to capture the sights & sounds of one of the most innovative movements in music history. The trailer even includes a key quote about how this "should be on any serious music lover's must-see list." ›››

Uprising Doc Trailer

"The Black community cannot just stand by and allow this to happen." Amazon has released an official US trailer for the BBC documentary series by Steve McQueen & James Rogan called Uprising. This first premiered in the UK in July, and arrives on Prime Video in the US + Canada this September. Uprising is a 3-part doc series made for the BBC by McQueen (fresh off of making the fantastic Small Axe anthology of films) and Rogan. The series is about the tragedy and aftermath of events in 1981 which it argues would go on to define race relations in the United Kingdom for a generation. There's three Uprising episodes: one about the New Cross house fire which took the lives of 13 black teenagers in January 1981; one about the day in March 1981, Black People's Day of Action, which saw more than 20,000 people join the first organized mass protest by black British people; one about the April 1981 Brixton riot, "The Front Line". All of these sound damn good. And we already know McQueen is one hell of a talented director. Check out the footage. ›››

"We are the last freaks in Havana!" Topic has unveiled a trailer for an acclaimed indie documentary called Los Últimos Frikis, which originally premiered at the 2019 DOC NYC Film Festival. It's finally debuting on VOD and on Topic this fall. Filmed over 10 years, Los Ultimos Frikis charts the tumultuous journey of Cuban heavy metal band Zeus, who went from persecuted to government sanctioned. On their first national tour, the band confronts the fate of heavy metal amid the changing times. The band was originally formed during the Castro era. In the face of repression, Zeus rose to infamy as a counter-cultural phenomenon but paid a price. Zeus's lead singer, Dionisio "Diony" Arce, spent six years in prison at the height of his career. Today, the band is part of the system as an official group within the Ministry of Culture's Agency of Cuban Rock. This film tells their story from their origins to their revival nowadays while Cuba goes through major political & social change. Featuring a score by Slayer's Dave Lombardo. New Trailer for One Night Stand Indie Comedy 'The One You're With'

The One You're With Trailer

"If we're going to be roommates, I need ground rules." 1091 Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie feature from actor / filmmaker Chad Werner called The One You're With, a low key stuck-at-home comedy about two people. A girl running from her past has a one-night stand with a guy who's stuck in his ways, only to wake up the next morning to discover they're now forced to live together due to a state of emergency. This is basically a pandemic concept, waking up on the morning of the lockdown and not able to go anywhere. This is also very similar to The Pink Cloud from Sundance this year - a Brazilian film about a one night stand and a mysterious pink cloud that traps them in a house together. The One You're With stars Chad Werner and Koko Marshall, with Colton Dunn as The President. This looks like a very simple, fun relationship comedy about this kind of awkward situation but not sure it has too much ingenuity. Enjoy. ›››

First Teaser Trailer for 'The Guilty' Remake Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

The Guilty Trailer

"Listen carefully." Netflix has unveiled a very short teaser for their film The Guilty, a remake of a Danish thriller from a few years ago. This English-language remake (a pretty common trend for Hollywood these days) is directed by Antoine Fuqua, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal in the same role as Danish actor Jakob Cedergren in the original (watch the trailer for it here). The film takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger—but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out. The film is premiering at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival and will be on Netflix in October soon after. The supporting cast includes a lot of major names, but no details on them yet - mainly because Gyllenhaal is the prominent actor in this. In the original film, aside from other call center people, the other main characters could only be heard as voices on the phone. I just hope this remake is as good as the original and doesn't water it down. ›››

Full Trailer for Troubled Troubadour Love Story 'Hard Luck Love Song'

Hard Luck Love Song Trailer

"It'll be just like old times." "That's scary…" Roadside Attractions has revealed the full official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Hard Luck Love Song, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Justin Corsbie. This premiered at last year's Austin Film Festival, the perfect place for this kind of musician romance tale of ups and downs, and good and bad. At its core, the film is a modern day love story wrapped in a gritty, compelling character study. A love story about a charismatic but down-on-his-luck troubadour living out of cheap motels and making bad decisions. The film is actually based on the song "Just Like Old Times" by Todd Snider. This stars Michael Dorman and Sophia Bush as the two lovers, plus Dermot Mulroney, Eric Roberts, Brian Sacca, Melora Walters, & RZA. So this is a "haunting" love story and a neo-noir western? First Look Trailer for Jane Campion's New Film 'The Power of the Dog'

The Power of the Dog Trailer

"Phil is a whistler, and a good one. His fingers move like spiders' legs. A severe, pale-eyed rancher, he inspires fear and awe." Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for Jane Campion's latest film The Power of the Dog, a gritty western romance set in Australia. This is world premiering at the 2021 Venice Film Festival next week, stopping by all the other major fall fests: the Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals as well. They spent months filming this in harsh conditions in Australia, and it's finally ready for debut. Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. Benedict Cumberbatch stars, with a cast including Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, and Adam Beach. There's not much to this first trailer, but there's enough to whet our appetites. Along with plenty of gorgeous cinematography. I've got a feeling this is going to be one of the most buzzed about films this year. ›››

New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Coppola's 1983 Film 'The Outsiders'

The Outsiders Trailer

"There's gotta be someplace without Greasers or Socs, with just people." Studiocanal and Warner Bros have unveiled a brand new trailer for the 4K restoration of Francis Ford Coppola's coming-of-age classic The Outsiders, which originally opened in theaters in 1983. This came just four years after Apocalypse Now, and nine years after finishing The Godfather: Part II. Based on the 1967 best-selling young-adult novel by S. E. Hinton, The Outsiders is considered the first "Brat Pack" movie, as it stars then-unknown young actors in many of their first break-through roles, including C. Thomas Howell (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), Rob Lowe ("The West Wing," "Parks and Recreation"), Emilio Estevez (St. Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club, Young Guns), Matt Dillon (Crash, There's Something About Mary), Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Mission Impossible, Jerry Maguire), Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Point Break, Ghost), Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai), and Diane Lane (Unfaithful, Under the Tuscan Sun), who went on to superstar-calibre careers. The rivalry between two gangs, the poor Greasers and the rich Socs, only heats up when one gang kills a member of the other. The film is getting a fresh 4k theatrical run in September. Prisoners Being Sent to Off-World Colonies in 'Solitary' Sci-Fi Trailer

Solitary Trailer

"I have no idea who you are or how I got here." Vertical Ent has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Solitary, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Luke Armstrong, who finished this film last year during lockdown. This is another low budget sci-fi film with a cool concept that could turn out bad, or could be pretty good. Solitary is a contained sci-fi film about a man who wakes up inside a room to discover he's a prisoner sent into space to form Earth's first colony, and worse - his cell mate Alana is hell bent on destroying everything. Starring Johnny Sachon and Lottie Tolhurst as the two prisoners, with Michael Condron, Brian Bovell, and Ben Valentine. This kind of even feels like a lockdown film - two people contained in a studio apartment, in space, arguing about what to do when they get out. Safe travels. ›››

Feminist Dark Comedy 'What She Said' Trailer Starring Jenny Lester

What She Said Trailer

"So you're mad that a bunch of people love you enough to show up and see you through something awful?" 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for What She Said, a "feminist dark comedy" that is debuting on VOD next month. When Sam decides to drop the charges against her rapist, her friends and her siblings gather to stage a Thanksgiving intervention at her family's remote cabin where she has run off to escape. It's a "kitchen sink family drama with a black comedy heart" at its core, and the filmmakers ultimately wanted to tell "what's hopefully a very human story about a deeply nuanced and often flawed woman and her messy, misstepping, well-meaning chosen family that raillies around her." Starring Jenny Lester, Britt Michael Gordon, Paige Berkovitz, Juliana Jurenas, and Peter Evangelista. This seems like one of these films that doesn't sound like it will be that good on paper, but as a film it's actually something special to discover. ›››

Melanie Lynskey & Judy Greer in Comedy 'Lady of the Manor' Trailer

Lady of the Manor Trailer

"Did you just come into my room to fart?" What a line. Lionsgate has released an official trailer for a kooky comedy titled Lady of the Manor, written and directed by brothers Christian Long & Justin Long, making their feature directorial debut together. The film follows a stoner who, after getting a gig as a tour guide in a historic manor, befriends the ghost of the former lady of the residence. "We really love buddy comedies from the '80s and '90s… We realized it was such a good opportunity for that type of buddy comedy, but with two women, and we just felt like we hadn't seen that in that way." Melanie Lynskey and Judy Greer star in this offbeat buddy comedy creation, with a full cast including Justin Long, Luis Guzmán, Patrick Duffy, Nick Morgulis, and Ryan Phillippe. This doesn't look like the most interesting or humorous take on this concept, rather lackluster and generic overall. But the Lynskey & Greer comedy duo makes up for it. ›››

Magnolia Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie action thriller titled Mayday, which originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Marking the feature debut of talented filmmaker Karen Cinorre, this subversive film is a modern feminist fable unlike anything you've ever seen. Ana is transported to a dreamlike and dangerous land where she joins an army of girls engaged in a never-ending war along a rugged coast. Though she finds strength in this exhilarating world, she soon comes to realize that she's not the killer they want her to be. The film stars Grace Van Patten as Ana, with Mia Goth, Soko, Havana Rose Liu, Juliette Lewis, and Théodore Pellerin. "I wanted to create a radical portrait of young women I’ve loved and admired throughout my life. These are modern heroines who deserve a big story with the kind of action, spectacle and mystery their irrepressible spirits call for," Cinorre explains. Blue Fox has released an official trailer for an indie mystery thriller titled Through the Glass Darkly, marking the feature debut of producer Lauren Fash. This first premiered at the San Diego Film Festival last year, and also played at the Red Rock Film Fest, arriving on VOD in September. New US Trailer for 'I'm Your Man' Robo Romance Starring Dan Stevens

I'm Your Man Trailer

"Your dream partner. Built for you." Bleecker Street Films has debuted another new official US trailer for the beloved sci-fi romance indie film I'm Your Man, directed by German filmmaker Maria Schrader. This originally premiered at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year under the German title Ich bin dein Mensch, and lead actress Maren Eggert won the Silver Bear for Best Performance at the fest. In order to obtain research funds for her studies at a museum in Berlin, a scientist accepts an offer to participate in an extraordinary experiment: for three weeks, she has to live with a humanoid lover robot, created to make her happy. It's a flip on the idealistic robot lover concept, with Dan Stevens (speaking perfect German) as the perfect man for her, as determined by the programmers. But she doesn't like him, and really doesn't want a relationship, and this challenges her. The cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Hans Löw, Annika Meier, and Jürgen Tarrach. Official Trailer for Hillary Rodham 'Un-Biopic' Film 'When I'm a Moth'

When I'm a Moth Trailer

"What follows is a work of fiction. So is the United States political system. Any resemblance, in either fiction, to real persons, live or dead, is coincidental." Dark Star Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled When I'm a Moth, which is being described as an "un-biopic", kind of an unofficial biopic about the early days of Hillary Rodham, before she became known as Hillary Clinton. It premiered back in 2019 at a few film festivals and is finally getting a VOD release this month for anyone interested. A parable on the ambiguity of political narratives. The film is set in 1969 up in Alaska. "Possibly a collective dream about a young woman with only the most abstract connection to the politician. Possibly both." The film stars Addison Timlin as Hillary, plus TJ Kayama and Toshiji Takeshima. This looks like a very unique, artsy film with tons of obstructed-view shots and intimacy and more. Brian and Charles Short Film

"I built his body, and we've been friends ever since." This is what friends are for. Brian and Charles is a wacky comedy sci-fi short film from filmmaker Jim Archer, and after first premiering in 2017, our friends at Short of the Week have reposted it on YouTube for everyone to enjoy. We're only catching up with it now all these years later and it's unquestionably worth a watch. The short is already being adapted into a feature film, and the synopsis for that has a better intro: "After a particularly harsh winter Brian goes into a deep depression; completely isolated and with no one to talk to, Brian does what any sane person would do when faced with such a melancholic situation. He builds a robot." It was shot and it takes place in the Snowdonia National Park area (see Google Maps) in the UK, and is written by & stars David Earl & Chris Hayward, with plenty of improvisation. This is so much fun and a clever idea for a robot short. Say "hi" to them below. ›››
