Passionate Lovers Entangled in 'Curiosa' Trailer with Noémie Merlant

Curiosa Trailer

"I can't be your husband so I'll be your lover." Film Movement has released a new official US trailer for an erotic drama French film called Curiosa, not to be confused with the new Mad Max sequel in the works titled Furiosa. It already opened in 2019 in France, but is just hitting US theaters this summer. A passionate love story set against a backdrop of sexual freedom, loosely based on the relationship between 19th-century authors Pierre Louÿs and Marie de Régnier. Set in the end of the 1800s, the film is about two lovers who do not end up marrying, but they reconnect one year later. And a passionate love affair begins, with a focus on erotic photography as Pierre Louÿs is getting into it using very early cameras. The cast includes Noémie Merlant (from Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Niels Schneider, Benjamin Lavernhe, Camelia Jordana, Amira Casar, Mathilde Warnier, and Mélodie Richard. This really looks very French and intensely sexual, which is exactly what it's exploring. Based on a true story, or at least real letters and photos. Enjoy. ›››

First Look Trailer for Neus Ballús' Catalan Comedy 'The Odd-Job Men'

The Odd-Job Men Trailer

"Nowadays, people… they just don't do things right." ScreenDaily has revealed the first promo trailer for an indie comedy from Catalonia called The Odd-Job Men, at least that's the English version of the title. The original Catalan title is Sis Dies Corrents, which translates directly to Six Current Days. It's premiering at both the Locarno and Toronto Film Festivals this fall, which makes this a good discovery already. The story follows three handymen who spend a week going from door-to-door in Barcelona to fix whatever is broken. "A peculiar team of three handymen has to face a series of eccentric clients. Their everyday job becomes a surrealist and exhilarating experience." The indie film stars Mohamed Mellali, Valero Escolar, and Pep Sarrà. I had a good feeling this might be pretty good and honestly it looks fantastic so far. It's not often we ever see a film about handymen, but here we go and this looks astute and quite amusing. Check it out below. ›››

Music Documentary 'Into The Mystery' Trailer Following Needtobreathe

Into The Mystery Trailer

"Creativity at its core is taking chances." Greenwich Ent. has released the trailer for a music documentary titled Into The Mystery, about the South Carolina band called "Needtobreathe" or NEEDTOBREATHE. At the height of the pandemic and without telling a soul, the band decamped to a historic house-turned-recording studio in remote Tennessee to work on new music. Over three weeks, they resided under one roof and handcrafted an album reflective of the turbulent times. Another music doc capturing the act of creation, and intimately showing us what it's like for musicians to work together under one roof to create special music. The band adds: "Getting to see an idea stretch and grow into a finished song is really inspiring, but we’ve never really let our fans see behind the curtain. Now people will get to pull up a chair and become a part of the process as we create our eighth studio album in an old house in the hills of Tennessee." The doc will debut after their tour later in the fall. I like that it says they're "the biggest band you've never heard of." ›››

Watch: Short Doc 'Calling From The Coral' About Saving the Oceans

Calling From The Coral Short Film

"I'm doing my best to understand what's gone wrong and propose solutions. But this is going to be a long fight…" A lovely little #SaveTheOceans short from director Janssen Powers that's worth a watch. Calling From The Coral is about a geologist named Sam Purkis, who is aboard an Ocean X research vessel in the Red Sea, examining the immense and frightening death of coral reefs. He states in this that at least 50% of all the coral reefs worldwide have died in the last 40 years (ugh, humans) despite coral reefs existing for 400 million years on Earth before. The short is framed within the context of Sam calling his daughter Grace, and recording a video explaining why he's on the mission spending time away from her - to figure out how her generation can save the planet and restore this coral in the future. "Really proud of this one and so thankful for Sam, Grace, & everyone else who worked so hard to bring it to life." This pairs well with Chasing Coral. ›››

Fighting for Democracy & Living with ALS in 'Not Going Quietly' Trailer

Not Going Quietly Trailer

"I am willing to give my last breath to save our democracy… What are you willing to give?" Greenwich Ent. has released an official trailer for a powerful activism documentary film called Not Going Quietly, following the life of Ady Barkan. This premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Audience Award and Special Jury Recognition for Humanity in Social Action. It also later played at the Oxford, Cleveland, Annapolis, and Tribeca Film Festivals. An intimate, inspiring look at activist and loving father Ady Barkan, diagnosed with ALS at age 32 and who, in spite of declining physical abilities, joins a motley crew of activists to ignite a once-in-a-generation movement for healthcare justice in America. Barkan is referred to as “The Most Powerful Activist in America,” because when he speaks, people listen. This does indeed look like a shot of "pure inspiration," a story about hope and fighting for what matters for everyone even in the midst of your own great struggles. I'm glad his story is being told in this way. Get a look below. ›››

A Banker Goes to Argentina - First Trailer for Acclaimed 'Azor' Film

Azor Trailer

"Act as simple as you can, my dear." Mubi has released an official trailer for an intriguing film titled Azor, which first premiered at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. It's described as a "political thriller" but it's unlike any other political thriller. Yvan De Wiel, a private banker from Geneva, goes to Argentina in the midst of a dictatorship to replace his partner, the object of the most worrying rumours, who disappeared overnight. It's set during a tumultuous time in Argentina in the 1970s, all about the power play of money. "In his remarkably assured debut, Swiss director Andreas Fontana invites us into this seductive, moneyed world where political violence simmers just under the surface." It's co-written by Argentinian filmmaker Mariano Llinás (La Flor), and is "a riveting look at international intrigue worthy of John le Carré or Graham Greene." Starring Fabrizio Rongione, Stéphanie Cléau, Elli Medeiros, and Alexandre Trocki. This is worth watching for the cinematography alone, but also for the frightening inside look at wealth & power. ›››

The film has one hell of an opening pitch: "Reaching a whole new scale of production for South African action films, Indemnity's lead, Jarrid Geduld, spent three months training with stunt masters Vernon Willemse and Grant Powell (Fury Road, Tomb Raider) and succeeded at all of his own stunts, including a record-breaking hanging suspension stunt performed from the 21st floor." Lost in the Outback with a Dingo - 'Buckley's Chance' Official Trailer

Buckley's Chance Trailer

"Don't worry, we'll find ’em." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for an Australian survival drama titled Buckley's Chance, which is opening in the US starting in August after already debuting in Australia a few months ago. The film is about a young boy who moves to Western Australian to live with his estranged grandfather. He ends up lost deep in the outback on a quest to try to get home. He comes across a wild dog, entangled in an old barbed-wire fence. When he saves the dingo from certain death, the two pals form an unexpected bond and embark on an epic journey of adventure and survival. Dogs are the best! The film stars Billy Nighy, Victoria Hill, Kelton Peel, and introducing Milan Burch as Ridley. This reminds me of many other lost-in-the-Outback films, such as Tracks, which also has a cute doggie in it and scary snakes. This looks a bit cheesy and cliche with all the usual Outback survival tropes, but seems wholesome anyway. ›››

Official UK Trailer for Robot Romance 'I'm Your Man' with Dan Stevens

I'm Your Man Trailer

"You may not realise, but you treat Tom like a machine." This originally premiered at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year under the German title Ich bin dein Mensch, and lead actress Maren Eggert won the Silver Bear for Best Performance at the festival. In order to obtain research funds for her studies at a museum in Berlin, a scientist accepts an offer to participate in an extraordinary experiment: for three weeks, she has to live with a humanoid lover robot, created to make her happy. It's a flip on the robot lover concept, with Dan Stevens (speaking perfect German) playing the perfect man for her, as determined by the programmers. But she doesn't like him, and really doesn't want a relationship, and this challenges her. The cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Hans Löw, Annika Meier, and Jürgen Tarrach. Indie Grindhouse Noir Film 'Like a Dirty French Novel' Official Trailer

Like a Dirty French Novel Trailer

"Am I making you nervous? While I touch myself?" Blvd De Cinema Productions has revealed an official trailer for a low budget indie film described as a "grindhouse noir" called Like a Dirty French Novel. Which, I must say, is a pretty clever title for this. The tagline states it's "between the absurd and the vulgar" which is also somewhat tantalizing. The film follows a number of interesting characters: a sexually-charged mysterious phone operator, two estranged twin brothers, and a cosplaying femme fatale. Starring Jennifer Daley, Robby Valls, Miles Dougal, Brittany Samson, and Amanda Viola. The trailer says there's "five noir-tinged chapters" in this film, which runs 78 minutes in total. This looks as mediocre as expected, with a few interesting shadowy shots, but there's not much else to see in here. Unless you're really into noir. ›››

He has been releasing segments of Mad God over the past few years on the project's website, but the full-length feature film is now finished and will debut at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival in a few weeks. A "diving bell descends amidst a ruined city and the Assassin emerges to explore a labyrinth of bizarre landscapes." It stars Alex Cox, Niketa Roman, Satish Ratakonda, Harper Taylor, and Brynn Taylor. Hard to even describe this, you just have to see the footage yourself and get a glimpse at how gnarly and distinct it looks. ›››

First Trailer for Docu Series 'Untold' on the Greatest Stories in Sports

Untold Trailer

"They're making a mockery of the league!" Netflix has revealed a trailer for a fascinating new documentary series called Untold, debuting weekly starting in August in a few more weeks. This series features five individual sports history doc films, each one about 80 mins, debuting across five weeks. From the creators of Wild Wild Country (which I lost my shit over), comes a five-part docuseries event that brings fresh eyes to epic tales from the wide world of sports. From tennis to boxing to basketball, these stories aren’t the ones you've heard before, even if you think you have. Premiering weekly, each film kicks off at a pivotal moment — the big fight, the Olympics, the playoffs — then delves deep into what happened beyond the headlines, as told by those who lived it, to reveal the grit, resilience, heartbreak, triumph, violence, comedy and pathos beneath the sweat. Damnnn this sounds good! I always enjoy when they dig into the real truth; the actual stories behind the media, behind the rumors, behind the statements, and get into what was really going on behind-the-scenes. I'm not usually into sports, but I'm so looking forward to watching all five of these docs. ›››

Oscar Isaac & Tye Sheridan in Schrader's 'The Card Counter' Trailer

The Card Counter Trailer

"Poker's all about waiting… then something happens." Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for Paul Schrader's new film The Card Counter, a gambler drama arriving in theaters this fall. It was just announced for the 2021 Venice Film Festival, premiering in the fest's main competition this September. A compulsive card player attempts to give guidance to a young man who is out for revenge against a mutual enemy - a military colonel. They end up going from casino to casino to build up their earnings, but risk getting lost in all of the cards and money. Oscar Isaac stars as William Tell, joined by Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, Willem Dafoe, Ekaterina Baker, Billy Slaughter, and Joel Michaely. So this isn't exactly the best trailer, a lot of strange things going on, including that flashback footage in B&W. But I'm intrigued nonetheless, and hopefully Schrader has crafted another compelling film for us to enjoy this year. ›››

Full US Trailer for Creepy Icelandic Thriller 'Lamb' with Noomi Rapace

Lamb Trailer

"It's not a child. It's an animal." Someone loves their little lamb a bit too much. A24 has revealed an official US trailer for an unsettling film from Iceland called Lamb, which just premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. A childless couple in rural Iceland make an alarming discovery one day in their sheep barn. They will soon face the consequences of defying the will of nature, in this dark and atmospheric folktale. This one is described in reviews as a "highly original take on the anxieties of being a parent, a tale in which nature plus nurture yields a nightmare." The film stars Noomi Rapace (who is actually Swedish but she moved to Iceland as a child where she spent some time growing up), Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, and Hilmir Snær Guðnason. This looks like it starts out as an intriguing story about connecting with a little lamb, but gets dark and intense in the second half. Do all the other sheep know what's going on? Huh. ›››

Another Quick Trailer for 'The Night House' Horror with Rebecca Hall

The Night House Trailer

"All houses where men have lived and died are haunted houses…" Searchlight Pictures has just unveiled a second official trailer for The Night House, a mysterious haunted house horror thriller from filmmaker David Bruckner (of The Signal, The Ritual). This new trailer is only 60 seconds compared to the full 2-1/2 minutes trailer from a few months ago. The film originally premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival and was delayed until the end of this summer. A widow attempts to uncover her recently deceased husband's disturbing secrets in their lakeside home. There seems to be much more going on in here with duality and an eerie mirror home / alternate world where things aren't quite the same. The horror film stars Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, and Stacy Martin. The creepy voiceover in this is very cool, and quite chilling. The more they show from this film, the more I really want to watch it. ›››

Round and Round Short Film

"Sometimes I'll forget about the outside world, because it's the most intense feeling of belonging that I've ever had." Lace up your skates, it's time for some roller derby! Round and Round is an outstanding short documentary film made by filmmakers Talia Pasqua & Simeon Pratt. They embedded themselves with a flat roller derby team in Chicago called the "Windy City Rollers" and earned their trust, filming some of their most intimate moments on (and off) the track. And the result is this incredible 16-minute short with some of the most intense in-your-face cinematography in any short film this year. It's an engrossing doc film spending time with many of the girls who talk about why they get so much from this roller derby team. The film stars Ashley Perrin, Lauren Lahvic, Molly Fannin, Kaylan Szafranski, Isabel Vazquez, Jessica Candea, Nicole Negrete, Nikki Fischer-Warne, Ailise Delaney, plus James & Judy Ramsay. First Look Trailer for Crazy Polish Film 'Bird Talk' by Xawery Żuławski

Bird Talk Trailer

Time to let loose!! Take a look at this. A first look teaser trailer has dropped for a crazy Polish film called Bird Talk, made by Polish filmmaker Xawery Żuławski shooting an unrealized script by his father, the late master Andrzej Żuławski (who passed away in 2016). The film initially premiered in 2019 at a few film festivals in Europe, but is just now showing up in the US. The Museum of Moving Image in NYC is hosting a screening later this month of the film as part of their First Look 20/21 screening series this summer. It tells the story of brothers, couples and friends, all trying to find a place in contemporary Warsaw. Intellectuals, teachers, musicians and painters, all barely making ends meet, but nevertheless intent on improving their country. Starring Sebastian Fabijański, Eryk Kulm Jr., Jaśmina Polak, Sebastian Pawlak, Żaneta Palica. MoMI describes the "frenetic, verbose" film as having "a headlong, anarchic spirit that honors the elder Żuławski’s legacy while also feeling entirely of the moment." Sounds like thrilling provocative cinema. ›››

New TV Spot for 'No Time to Die' Reminds Us Bond is (Finally) Back

No Time to Die Spot

"So you're not dead?" After more than a year wait, we're just a few months away from finally seeing the new Bond movie! Eon has released a new TV spot for No Time to Die, the 25th Bond movie and the fifth movie starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007. We featured numerous trailers last year but after many delays the release date has been reset for October this fall. When No Time to Die begins, Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new tech. The cast includes Jeffrey Wright as Felix, Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw as Q; plus Rami Malek, Ana de Armas, Léa Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Billy Magnussen, Rory Kinnear, and David Dencik. It feels like we've been waiting so long for this movie, but I'm still as excited as ever. It seems like Fukunaga nailed this one – it might just be worth the long wait. Oh right and don't forget - watch it "only in theaters." ›››

First Look Teaser for Almodóvar's 'Parallel Mothers' Playing in Venice

Parallel Mothers Trailer

Almodóvar is back again! An early teaser trailer has debuted for the latest Pedro Almodóvar film, this one titled Parallel Mothers, originally known as Madres Paralelas. It was just announced as a Venice Film Festival premiering in a few months, and will open in the US later this year from Sony Pictures Classics. The film is another drama that centers on two mothers, portrayed by Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit, who both give birth on the same day. "With Madres Paralelas I return to the female universe, to motherhood, to the family," Almodóvar said earlier this year. "I speak of the importance of ancestors and descendants. The inevitable presence of memory. There are many mothers in my filmography, the ones that are part of this story are very different." The film's cast also includes Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Israel Elejalde, Julieta Serrano, and Rossy de Palma. This teaser is dialogue free so everyone can enjoy it without any subtitles, to get a first look at what this film looks and feels like. And it seems as beautiful as always from Almodóvar. ›››

Bloody First Trailer for Syfy's New 'Day of the Dead' Zombie Series

Day of the Dead Trailer

"Boys - let's move!" Syfy has unveiled the first official trailer for a new zombie horror series called Day of the Dead, a remake / update of the classic George A. Romero zombie movie of the same name from 1985. Which is exactly why we're featuring this first look to watch - always respect Romero. The trailer dropped during the San Diego Comic-Con@Home event, introducing the new series / Romero tribute, which will be launching in October. The original film is about a group of scientists and military personnel dwelling in an underground bunker in Florida, but this new series is a bit different - following six strangers out trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion. Not down in any bunkers yet. Starring Keenan Tracey, Natalie Malaika, Daniel Doheny, Lauren Howell, Morgan Holmstrom, Kristy Dawn Dinsmore, and Miranda Frigon. It seems more TV tame than the film, but still packed with tons of zombie carnage. ›››

First Teaser for Matthias Schweighöfer's Fun 'Army of Thieves' Film

Army of Thieves Trailer

"This is about becoming legends." Netflix has revealed an impressive first teaser for a film titled Army of Thieves, a spin-off prequel for Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead. Directed by and starring German actor Matthias Schweighöfer as the safecracker Ludwig Dieter, the film is about his escapades early on just six years before the Vegas heist just as the start of the outbreak. He is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist with the help of a misfit crew of aspiring thieves. The tagline for the original teaser poster was "More Safes, Less Zombies" - to give you an idea of what this film is all about. In addition to Schweighöfer, it also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen. Dieter is one of the best characters in Army of the Dead, and it's still amazing to me that only took a few months for Netflix to make an entire film he directed expanding his story. And with a snazzy ensemble cast to boot, too. ›››

Artist Dash Snow Profiled in 'Moments Like This Never Last' Trailer

Moments Like This Never Last Trailer

"Being free, to Dash, was everything." Utopia Media has debuted an official trailer for a documentary called Moments Like This Never Last, a profile of the New York artist Dash Snow. Directed by photographer Cheryl Dunn, this first premiered last year at DOC NYC and is getting a small theatrical release (in NY & LA) next month. Snow rejected a life of privilege to make his own way as an artist on the streets of downtown New York City in the late 1990s. Developing from a notorious graffiti tagger into an international art star, he documented his drug- and alcohol-fueled nights with the surrogate family he formed with friends and fellow artists Ryan McGinley and Dan Colen before his death by heroin overdose in 2009. Drawing from Snow's unforgettable body of work and involving archival footage, Cheryl Dunn's exceptional portrait captures his all-too-brief life of reckless excess and creativity. Also featuring artist Dan Colen, art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, filmmaker Larry Clark, curator Neville Wakefield, among others. A wild look at an artist's unique NYC life. ›››

Trailer for 'Bring Your Own Brigade' Doc About California's Wildfires

Bring Your Own Brigade Trailer

"We're surrounded by fire." CBS and Paramount+ have unveiled the official trailer for a documentary film titled Bring Your Own Brigade, the latest work from Oscar-nominated doc filmmaker Lucy Walker. This first premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and will be available both in theaters and streaming later in August this summer. Walker's documentary captures the horror and heroism of the deadliest week of wildfires in California history and explores the causes and solutions of a global crisis that is quite literally burning our world to the ground. An investigation into our landscape's hidden fire stories and on-the-ground experiences of firefighters and residents struggling through deadly fires. Sundance adds that the film "cogently exposes our out-of-balance relationship with nature and explores what it will take to restore this delicate equilibrium." This is the kind of incisive, tough filmmaking I like to see! It seems like a brutally honest investigative look at how we must wake up and understand our interactions with this planet. ›››

Review: M. Night Shyamalan's Thriller 'Old' About a Peculiar Beach

Old Review

"A natural anomaly," the resort manager says at the beginning of the film. Yes, indeed it is. This is one of those lines from early on in the film that is a big wink at what's to come – not only about the film itself but with the strange beach they end up at. Old is the latest film from provocative, twisty filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, trying something new by adapting a French graphic novel called "Sandcastle" by Pierre-Oscar Lévy & Frederick Peeters. The story follows a family that visits a secluded tropical beach while on vacation, only to discover that not only are they trapped there, but everyone seems to be getting older extremely fast. It's an ambitious concept to turn into a film, not only to visualize correctly with regards to aging but to get the performances that make it all seem believable. Shyamlan does well, and the film is thrilling and chilling, but not the most impressive or satisfying creation. I enjoyed watching, but still wanted even more out of it. ›››

However, they end up with a serious change of plans when they enter the interior of a strange house located at the bottom of a secluded lake and their presence awakens a spirit dark that haunts the house. New US Trailer for 'Who You Think I Am' Movie with Juliette Binoche

Who You Think I Am Trailer

"We float in the virtual." Cohen Media has released an official US trailer for a French romantic drama titled Who You Think I Am, made by filmmaker Safy Nebbou. This premiered back in 2019 at the Berlin Film Festival and played at a number of film festivals that year and it also opened in Europe that year. Now it's finally getting a US release after all this time. Adapted from a novel, Juliette Binoche stars as a 50-year-old divorced teacher who creates a fake online persona of a beautiful 24-year-old woman. But, of course, she becomes trapped by her deceit when she falls for a man who has become smitten with her profile. The cast includes Nicole Garcia, François Civil, Marie-Ange Casta, Guillaume Gouix, Charles Berling, and Jules Houplain. Watch: Chris Black's Short Film 'Jim' About America's Implicit Racism

Jim Short Film

"And I truly believe that a mind is a terrible to thing to waste!" In an overwhelmingly white classroom, an isolated and Black middle school student struggles with the pressure of being the only Black voice during an uncomfortable in-class reading activity. Jim is a short film written and directed by filmmaker Chris Black, who tragically passed away in 2019 just after a festival premiere. Short of the Week was given permission from Black's family to posthumously debut the film online. "A thought-provoking satire, Black's debut short gleefully dives into a series of hot-button American cultural issues in a potent comedy of racial cringe." It involves the iconically troubled "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" novel, commenting on America's racist past (and present). Starring AJ Hudson as Charles, Kalina McCreery as the teacher, Julio Montoro as Jim. Black stated he wanted to explore how "there is an absurdity to black life." It's a must see 6-min short. ›››
