Watch: Wacky Animated Short 'Oh, Darling!' from Cornelius Joksch

Oh, Darling! Short Film

Another social media cautionary tale! This amusing, wacky animated short is a personal project from Berlin-based animation filmmaker Cornelius Joksch and it's another fun story that's criticizing the tragic lives of people obsessed with their social media presence. Cornelius makes his own short films and illustrations, but also works for brands and studios. Oh, Darling! is now available to watch online and it's only 4 minutes long. Obsessed with birds of all sorts, clumsy but loveable loner Andy finds himself lucky one day, when out of nowhere the most stunning bird he’s ever seen lands on his windowsill. Tempted by the outlook of getting recognition amongst fellow bird-aficionados, Andy gets a little carried away… Poor bird just wanted to be a free bird. In addition to the vital message of this (don't chase popularity!) the animation style is extra funky. ›››

New US Trailer for 'Percy vs Goliath' Farmer Legal Drama from Canada

Percy vs Goliath Trailer

"I get sued doing the same thing my family's been doing for hundreds of years." Saban Films has debuted an official US trailer for an indie drama titled Percy vs Goliath, also known as just Percy for the Canadian release (watch that trailer here). Based on real events from a 1998 lawsuit, the film follows a small-town farmer who takes on a giant corporation (Monsanto) after their GMO's interfere with his crops. As he starts the fight against them, he realizes he's like thousands of other disenfranchised farmers around the world all fighting the same battle. Suddenly, he becomes an unsuspecting folk hero in a desperate battle to protect farmers' rights and fight corporate greed. Christopher Walken stars as Percy Schmeiser, with Christina Ricci, Luke Kirby, Zach Braff, Martin Donovan, and Adam Beach. This looks good mostly because it's such an important story to tell, about how greedy corporations are & how we must fight them at all costs. ›››

Fernanda Diniz in Gritty British Vengeance Thriller 'Red Rage' Trailer

Red Rage Trailer

"Baby, let's go kill some sinners." Saints & Sinners + Strike Media has released this new official trailer for a gritty British thriller titled Red Rage, formerly known as Red Devil. Despite the title seemingly being a wink to hating Russians ("those red devils!") it's really a reference to the designer drug called "Red Devil", which is ruining the city. A murderous vigilante couple tear through the town, serving vengeance to dealers of the drug. "An intertwining tale of sex, drugs, rock and woe," is how they sell it. Red Rage stars Fernanda Diniz, Jack Turner, Adam Deacon, Steven Berkoff, Ian Reddington, and Vas Blackwood. This looks like it has way more weed in it than any other drug, but I dig the style and the craziness of it. Not that we haven't seen this so many times before; it's almost like Trainspotting crossed with The Boondock Saints. ›››

Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in DreamWorks Animation's beloved franchise that began with the 2002 Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron and the TV series. The Mitchells vs. The Machines Trailer

"What would a functional family do?!" Netflix has revealed the new official trailer for the animated movie now known as The Mitchells vs. The Machines, the latest creation of the Lord / Miller + Sony Pictures Animation team following their Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse success. We first premiered a trailer for this film under the title Connected last year, but after numerous delays during the pandemic, Sony sold it off to Netflix instead - and now they're planning to release it streaming starting April 30th this spring. Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams. Her whole family drives Katie to school together when their plans are interrupted by a tech uprising. The Mitchells will have to work together to save the world. Featuring the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric André, and Olivia Colman. Zola Trailer

"From here on out, watch every move this b*tch make." A24 has finally debuted the full official trailer for the crazy funky dark comedy Zola, which first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year. It was supposed to open last summer, but was delayed an entire year and is now reset to open this summer in theaters. This is the film that's based on a Twitter thread from 2015, in which a woman wrote "wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out???????? It's kind of long but full of suspense." Taylour Paige stars as Zola, a stripper in Detroit who befriends another stripper named Stefani, played by Riley Keough. When she convinces Zola to go to Florida, what was supposed to be a quick road trip turns into a weekend from hell. Also starring Nicholas Braun, Colman Domingo, and Ari'el Stachel. New Trailer for 'Spiral: From the Book of Saw' Reboot with Chris Rock

Spiral: From the Book of Saw Trailer

"I thought the Jigsaw killer was dead?" "He is…" Lionsgate has debuted a second official trailer for horror sequel Spiral. The full title is Spiral: From the Book of Saw, though they seem to be switching between just Spiral and the full title. This was delayed from release last May, and has now been reset for release this May, opening exclusively in theaters because that's how they want everyone to experience this. Directed by Darren Bousman (of Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera), the idea for this return to the Saw universe comes directly from Chris Rock - credited for the story. Rock also stars in it, along with Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson. Instead of gore horror, this next Saw movie has more of a Se7en vibe, about a detective investigating grisly murders who ends up trapped in "the center of the killer's morbid game." This a whole different trailer than the trailer last year, but it still looks insanely scary and extremely intense. Lots of mysteries in here, tons of spirals, and plenty of deadly traps of course. ›››

Some have become upset over his comments releasing Tenet, but many others still love him and always appreciate the thrilling movies he makes. Filmmaker Dylan Hoang has put together a brand new tribute titled "The Films of Christopher Nolan", also called "Christopher Nolan's Labyrinth" – an homage to his 20 years so far. The video covers everything from Memento through Tenet (with IMAX footage). It was created in honor of the 30th anniversary of Memento, but it might as well be in honor of his 11th movie Tenet finally getting released on Blu-ray and showing in cinemas again now that they've started to safely re-open. Raunchy New Red Band Trailer for 'Shiva Baby' Jewish Comedy Film

"You are flirting with everyone here… Chugging wine…!" College student Danielle must cover her tracks when she unexpectedly runs into her sugar daddy at a "shiva" (a Jewish tradition of seven days' mourning for the dead)—along with her parents, ex-girlfriend and family friends also in attendance. New Trailer for Metrograph Re-Release of Claire Denis' Film 'L'Intrus'

Metrograph reminds this is an adaptation of "an unadaptable essay by philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy" and was a chance for Denis to push her "elliptical style to the extreme and [transform] the logic and laws of narrative." It's shot on Super 35 by cinematographer Agnés Godard, featuring music by Tindersticks. The film stars Michel Subor, Grégoire Colin, Katia Golubeva, and Florence Loiret-Caille. Enough Short Film

"Looking for mutual respect, but you got your foot on my neck!" This extraordinary short film has been a decade in the making. Enough (stylized as enough.) is a short music video doc profiling the life of musician / hip-hop artist Nathan Nzanga. "A dream, a nightmare, a musical. Ten years in the making, welcome to the stormy inner world of one Congolese-American coming of age in the US." Directed by award-winning filmmaker Caleb Slain, the film follows Nzanga's journey from quirky kid born to Congolese immigrants, to an idealistic teen artist, to a frustrated young man struggling to overcome pain and cynicism. The film has inspired artists to create posters in support, and one of those creators is the multi-award winning artist & celebrated Hollywood poster illustrator Akiko Stehrenberger. She has unveiled a painting inspired by the film (seen below), which is now being auctioned off via Prodigy Camp. To hear more about her inspiration and why she made this art - click here. Dazzling Doc Series 'Life in Color with David Attenborough' Trailer

Life in Color with David Attenborough Trailer

"We will reveal a world that has long been hidden from our eyes." Netflix has released a trailer for a series titled Life in Color with David Attenborough, which is debuting streaming on Earth Day this year. This nature doc is another beautiful exploration of life on Planet Earth, focusing on the many ways animals use colour (the British way to spell it) throughout their lives. It's also an excuse for me to reminded everyone that you MUST WATCH Attenborough's other doc from Netflix: A Life on Our Planet. Which is one of the best docs I saw last year. David Attenborough commenting on Life in Color: "Over the decades, film has made extraordinary advances, from black and white to color, and high definition to even ultra-high definition. But we have always known there is another world of color, one that only animals can see. For Life in Color, we developed new technology to provide a window into these invisible worlds. It has allowed us to unlock some of the mysteries of nature, and to share these with our audience for the first time." So stunning. ›››

Roxana Lupu is Queen in Romanian History Film 'Queen Marie' Trailer

Queen Marie Trailer

"She's nothing like her grandmother… Queen Victoria." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the US trailer for a Romanian historical epic called Queen Marie, originally known as Queen Marie of Romania. This opened in Romania back in 2019 and has been playing around Europe, but is only now getting a US release on VOD this spring. Devastated by the First World War and plunged into political controversy, Romania's every hope accompanies its queen on her mission to Paris to lobby for international recognition of its great unification at the 1919 peace talks. Starring Romanian actress Roxana Lupu as "Queen Marie of Romania", and a full cast including Daniel Plier, Anghel Damian, Adrian Titieni, Iulia Verdes, Patrick Drury, Caroline Loncq, Iulia Verdes, Philippe Caroit, and Emil Mandanac. This has an epic look and feel, but it also seems a bit drab and melodramatic, lost in all the historical accuracy more than the storytelling. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Giants Being Lonely' Baseball Coming-of-Age Film

Giants Being Lonely Trailer

"Because the only way to have fun is to stick your neck out and bite the other team's head off…!" Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Giants Being Lonely, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Grear Patterson. This originally premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival a few years back, and it also played at the Santa Barbara Film Festival earlier this year. A pair of players on a successful high school baseball team, the Giants, come of age in the American South. "Set in a semi-rural landscape of verdant forests and pent-up yearning, the debut feature from lauded mixed-media artist Grear Patterson is a deeply personal story of youth and young manhood, tracing the ups and downs of love, sex, loneliness, friendship, baseball, and death – as the pressure mounts to make it out alive." Damn. This stars Jack Irving, Ben Irving, Lily Gavin, and Gabe Fazio. The film seems like an intense and authentic look at toxic masculinity and how growing up shapes these boys as they deal with pressures of a small town life. ›››

An Abandoned Island Might Really Be Haunted in 'The Resort' Trailer

The Resort Trailer

"It's not a legend." Vertical Ent. has released the first official trailer for a horror film titled The Resort, the second feature from filmmaker Taylor Chien (after Cornered previously). This hasn't played at any fests but will be out to watch at the end of April this spring. For her birthday, Lex's three closest friends decide to take her on a surprise trip to a supposedly haunted island resort. When the four friends arrive in Hawaii to investigate the reports of a haunting at an abandoned resort in hopes of finding the infamous "Half-Faced Girl" haunting the grounds, they soon learn you should be careful what you wish for… This stars Bianca Haase, Brock O'Hurn, Michael Vlamis, and Michelle Randolph. It looks like they shot this at actual abandoned resort for real, which makes it another meta level of freaky on top of everything else going down. ›››

Limbo

"How long have you been waiting?" Mubi in the UK has released the first UK trailer for an acclaimed indie titled Limbo, the latest from filmmaker Ben Sharrock (of Pikadero previously). This was selected for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, but premiered later at the Toronto & London & Zurich Film Festival in the fall last year. Nominated for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut at the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, Sharrock's Limbo is a "wry, funny and poignant cross-cultural satire that subtly sews together the hardship and hope of the refugee experience." New US Trailer for 'April and The Extraordinary World' Animated Film

April and The Extraordinary World Trailer

"You're in danger! They're coming for you!" GKids has posted another US trailer with English dubbing for the French animated film April and The Extraordinary World, known as Avril et le monde truqué. This originally premiered at the 2015 Annecy Film Festival and already opened in 2016, so we're a few years behind on this. But that doesn't matter. It's always nice to catch up with lovely films from around the world! From the creators of the Academy Award-nominated Persepolis and the mind of renowned graphic novelist Jacques Tardi comes a riveting sci-fi adventure set in an alternate steampunk universe. It's 1941 but France is trapped in the nineteenth century, governed by steam power and Napoleon V, where many scientists vanish mysteriously. April goes in search of her missing scientist parents. This is already available to watch in French (featuring the voice of Marion Cotillard as Avril) with subtitles. Or you can watch the alternate English dub version featuring the voices of Angela Galuppo as April, Paul Giamatti, Tony Hale, Susan Sarandon, and J.K. Simmons. This looks like a worthwhile adventure to take (with a talking kitty, too). ›››

Meet a Super Freaky Flexible Clown in Horror Trailer for 'Separation'

Separation Trailer

"Daddy - where do you think mommy is now?" Briarcliff Entertainment has released an official trailer for a creepy new puppet clown horror titled Separation, from director William Brent Bell of the two The Boy and Brahms: The Boy II films previously. Get ready for more spring horror. The film is about an eight-year-old girl, played by Violet McGraw, who is lonely living among the feuds between her mother and father. When her mother is killed in an accident, things start to take a dark turn in their Brooklyn townhome. Her own puppets and other characters start to come to life. "When the motives of the ghoulish creatures become clear, the lives of everyone are put very much in jeopardy." The cast includes Mamie Gummer, Rupert Friend, Brian Cox, Troy James, Simon Quarterman, and Madeline Brewer. This already does look quite scary from this footage. And finally a good upgrade from all the junk horror dreck over the past year. ›››

Watch: Oscar-Nominated Short Doc 'Do Not Split' About Hong Kong

Do Not Split Short Film

"Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times!" The fight for democracy captured on camera. Do Not Split 不割席 is an excellent short documentary by filmmaker Anders Hammer, who was on the streets in Hong Kong filming the protests in 2019. After premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, the film earned a Best Documentary Short nomination at this year's Academy Awards. Congrats! In 2019 Hong Kong was rocked by the largest protests since Britain handed back the area to China in 1997. This is the story of the protests, told through a series of demonstrations by local protesters that escalate into conflict when highly armed police appear on the scene. Do Not Split takes us to the heart of the Hong Kong protests throughout that summer. It follows pro-democracy protesters in over the course of a year as they face police violence and grapple with the new, Beijing-backed National Security Law. I think all of what's going on around the world is summed up perfectly by one of the lines in this film: "I'm not thinking democracy will come easily." ›››

First Trailer for Sensational Doc 'Awaken' Presented by Malick & Reggio

Awaken Doc Trailer

"Our moment." Step aside Godfrey Reggio, it's time for other filmmakers to present their vision of our world in glorious 4K HDR. Awaken is a documentary feature from filmmaker / cinematographer Tom Löwe, of the timelapse film TimeScapes previously. This is his latest creation - shot over a 5-year period in more than 30 countries, he pioneers state-of-the-art timelapse, time-dilation, underwater, and aerial cinematography techniques to give audiences new eyes with which to see our world. Executive produced by cinema pioneers Terrence Malick and Godfrey Reggio (best known for the stunning Qatsi documentary series), Awaken is a celebration of the spirit of life, an exploration of the Earth, and an ode to the Cosmos. I'm a big geek for this kind of jaw-dropping cinematography, but apparently it's getting harder and harder to sell to audiences. This premiered in 2018 but is only now getting a direct-to-VOD release via the Dust sci-fi YouTube channel. But at least it's finally getting released and goodness it looks spectacular. With a score by Joe Trapanese. ›››

Must See Concept Art Trailer for Sci-Fi Sequel 'The Last Starfighters'

The Last Starfighters Trailer

"You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier." Hollywood screenwriter Gary Whitta has revealed a special pitch trailer "sizzle reel" that they created for The Last Starfigher sequel already in development (tentatively) called The Last Starfighters. This trailer features concept art with a score and a tiny bit of dialogue from the original shown at the end. Whitta originally dropped some of the concept on Twitter back in 2018, so we've seen most of this stuff before, but there are a few new images added in this trailer. Plus it's just thrilling to see all the art (by Matt Allsopp) with the music (by Chris Tilton & Craig Safan). Whitta was developing this project with Jonathan Betuel, the same screenwriter on the original cult classic 1984 sci-fi film. The concept for this sequel is said to involve Alex returning again, but no exact plot details have ever been revealed. Still, if you've been excited to one day see this sequel - then have a look. ›››

Gen Z's Take on Coming-of-Age in Acclaimed Film 'Beast Beast' Trailer

Beast Beast Trailer

"So I guess we're not having any fun today?" Vanishing Angle has released official trailer for indie coming-of-age film Beast Beast, which originally premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year to some solid reviews. This looks like a super indie, shoot-from-the-hip, creative low key story about "what it means to come of age in an era marked by technology and social media, where violent clashes awaken dormant passions and teenagers are faced with growing up all too quickly." The cast of newcomers includes Shirley Chen, Will Madden, and Jose Angeles. Reviews say that the film "captures Gen Z in a compelling, raw form. Insightful and terrifying… ambitious and intriguing." Terrifying indeed. This definitely does look a bit wild and crazy, maybe a bit too wild and crazy, but perhaps I just don't understand all the kids these days… ›››

Weird Al Narrates This 'Tiny Tim: King For A Day' Doc About Tiny Tim

Tiny Tim: King For A Day Trailer

"I feel like someone from Mars coming to Earth." Juno Films debuts a trailer for a music documentary film titled Tiny Tim: King For A Day, another music doc about a musician most don't know much about. This originally premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, and also stopped by DOC NYC and the Calgary Underground Film Festival. Narrated by Weird Al Yankovic, Tiny Tim: King For A Day is a biographical doc about a musician who is not only well known for hits such as "Tip Toe Through The Tulips" but for his trail blazing personae that paved the way for other rock stars such as David Bowie, Prince, Iggy Pop, and Boy George. The memorable archival footage, exclusive access to Tiny Tim's intense diaries (read by Weird Al), the playful and powerful animations, and the interviews with his family and friends makes this film not only a captivating portrait of one of the oddest stars the world has ever seen, but also a psychological drama, examining the borderline between insanity and geniality. Featuring lots of archival footage provided by D.A. Pennebaker, Jonas Mekas, Andy Warhol, and others. This looks like a wacky, tragic, captivating true story. ›››

Killer Sea Animals Unleashed! New Trailer for 'Aquarium of the Dead'

Aquarium of the Dead Trailer

"Something is up with the animals." The Asylum has just released an official trailer for one of their latest ridiculous B-movie horrors called Aquarium of the Dead, which is arriving direct-to-DVD (because that's the right release for this) in May this year. This is actually a sort-of-sequel to director Glenn Miller's other Asylum zombie animal movies Zoombies and Zoombies 2. Surprise – there is not much of a plot here: a scientific accident causes creatures to become zombies. But I'd rather enjoy this as a revenge tale for all the sea animals captured and thrown into aquariums finally getting back at the asshole humans who put them there. The cast includes Vivica A. Fox, D.C. Douglas, Erica Duke, Eva Ceja, Anthony Jensen, Anna Telfer, Jeffery Thomas Johnson, and Rishi Arya. This has zombie sharks, octopus, crabs, fish, and oh yes, a zombie walrus (finally vengeance for Tusk!) and starfish, too. Whatever you do, don't touch the glass. ›››

New UK Trailer for 'Laddie: The Man Behind The Movies' Documentary

Laddie Trailer

"Someone inevitably had a story about my dad." Central City Media has released a new UK trailer for an indie documentary called Laddie: The Man Behind The Movies, which we haven't heard of before even though it originally premiered back in 2017. And it looks entertaining and informative. Laddie is a doc film about Alan Ladd Jr., producer and former 20th Century Fox chairman, directed by his daughter Amanda Ladd-Jones. The untold story of the movie mogul who green lit Star Wars. And Blade Runner. And Alien. And Police Academy. You may not recognize his name at first, but as soon as you watch any of these films (and many others) you'll see his name in the credits right away. Featuring interviews tons of major names: Ben Affleck, Mel Brooks, Richard Donner, Lucy Fisher, Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Michael Gruskoff, Jay Kanter, Ron Howard, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, Sigourney Weaver and many more. His daughter, who directed the film, wants others to get to know him "not just as 'Dad', but the way his collaborators do—as a doyen of modern American cinema." I'm always down for a fascinating Hollywood history doc! Check it out. ›››

Full Trailer for Ben Wheatley's Latest Eco-Horror Trip 'Into the Earth'

Into the Earth Trailer

"There's no reception in there… People get a bit funny in the woods sometimes." Neon has debuted the full-length official trailer for Ben Wheatley's latest unsettling horror film In the Earth, which just premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This is Wheatley new hallucinogenic eco-horror that he secretly shot during the pandemic summer last year in the woods in the UK. As the world searches for a cure to a disastrous virus, a scientist and park scout venture deep in the forest for a routine equipment run. But their journey becomes a terrifying voyage through the "heart of darkness", the forest coming to life around them. The film stars Joel Fry, Ellora Torchia, Hayley Squires, as well as BAFTA Award Winner Reece Shearsmith. The freaky new film is a commentary not only on isolation and the pandemic, but on mother nature itself and the way it subtly controls us. Charlie Tahan & Pineapple in Campus Comedy Film 'Drunk Bus' Trailer

Drunk Bus Trailer

"What you need is a do-over - grab those '40s and let's dip!" FilmRise Releasing has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Drunk Bus, starring Charlie Tahan (from Super Dark Times, "Ozark", "Wayward Pines"). This originally premiered at the San Diego Film Festival last year, and just stopped by the Cinequest Film Festival this month. A directionless, young campus bus driver and a punk rock, Samoan security guard named Pineapple form an unlikely kinship as they navigate the unpredictable late shift shit show known as the "drunk bus." Together, they break out of their endless loop of small town life and into a world of uncertainty, excitement and incredibly poor decision-making. This co-stars Tahan and Pineapple Tangaroa, Kara Hayward, Zach Cherry, Sarah Mezzanotte, Dave Hill, Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, and Will Forte. Inspired by one of the director's real experiences as a campus bus driver, and the actual security guard that worked with him, who they then brought back to be in here. Final US Trailer for Australian Western 'High Ground' with Simon Baker

High Ground Trailer

"When you get the high ground, you control everything…" Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted one final US trailer for High Ground, an Australian western about racism that originally premiered at the Berlin Film Fest over a year ago. We've already posted two other trailers for this last year, including the full Australian trailer. Set in the 1930s, High Ground is inspired by true events, telling the story of a policeman in Northern Australia and the local aboriginals he attempts to befriend. After a terrible massacre leaves many natives dead without justice, years later he is forced to return and confront the same aboriginals when they start attacking outposts. A "frontier western about colonial violence and misunderstandings that deeply resonates in today's Australia – and indeed all over the world – the film explores the nature of loyalty and the ability to distinguish freely between right and wrong, in opposition to the dogmas of the age in which you live." This co-stars Simon Baker and Jacob Junior Nayinggul, plus Jack Thompson, Callan Mulvey, Witiyana Marika, & Caren Pistorius. High Ground finally arrives on VOD in the US starting this April. ›››
