2021 Golden Globe Awards Winners - 'Soul' Wins Best Animation

2021 Golden Globe Winners

The winners of the HFPA's 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the precursor to the Academy Awards, have been announced tonight at a ceremony held virtually on Zoom + in Los Angeles, co-hosted by Tina Fey & Amy Poehler. It seems these awards get less and less relevant every year, but the winners are still worthy nonetheless. Here's hoping the HFPA chose wisely. The list below will update with all film-related winners as they're revealed during the live broadcast. The nominees from 2020 are actually a good selection of films, though they are a bit too fond of The Trial of the Chicago 7 this time. But it's still great to see Mank, Borat 2, Palm Springs, Over the Moon, The Mauritanian, and On the Rocks among the nominees. It's time to start the show, we're curious to find out which films they've picked. Let's see who is taking home Globes this year. ›››

Watch: Pixar's Superb SparkShort 'Wind' Directed by Edwin Chang

SparkShort Wind

Onward and upward! Disney + Pixar have uploaded another of their SparkShorts to YouTube for everyone to view for free called Wind, written and directed by Edwin Chang, who usually works as in simulation at the studio. Pixar's SparkShorts program for experimental & innovative short films launched in 2019 and after posting half of them on YouTube, Disney stopped allowing them to be seen for free and saved the rest of them for Disney+ only. This short also debuted back in 2019 but is now available for YouTube viewing, along with this message: "Pixar Animation Studios and the SparkShorts filmmakers of Wind are in solidarity with the Asian and Asian American communities against Anti-Asian hate in all its forms. We are proud of the onscreen representation in this short and have decided to make it widely available, in celebration of what stories that feature Asian characters can do to promote inclusion everywhere." The story follows a boy and his grandmother as they try to escape from a dark chasm to a better life above. This one is a must watch. ›››

Looking Back: Alex's Top 10 Favorite Films of 2020 - 'Nine Days' at #1

Alex's Top 10 Favorite Films of 2020

"You are being considered for the amazing opportunity of life." Another year, another Top 10. Better late than never, as they say! Though this usually happens with me, getting this list out takes a lot of time… It was a tough year to keep writing during 2020, despite watching films all the time. I saw over 400 films during the year, trying to watch as much as I could despite the lockdowns and the shut downs, and everything else going on. But here it is anyway - my personal list of my Top 10 Favorite Films of 2020. Most of all, I just want to share my love for these glorious works of cinema. It's not that surprising that many of my favorite films are films about how magical and mesmerizing life is to live, which is important during this pandemic time anyway. We have to keep on living, despite all the challenges, we have to seek the light, despite all the darkness, we have to find beauty, despite all the ugliness. And these films provided that much needed bliss. ›››

William Shatner & Jean Smart in RomCom 'Senior Moment' Trailer

Senior Moment Trailer

"This is not about you getting back your license to drive, this is about your license to live!" Screen Media Films has unveiled an official trailer for an old timers romantic comedy called Senior Moment, made by filmmaker Giorgio Serafini. This zany romcom set in SoCal features William Shatner and Jean Smart in a lovers-at-any-age romance. After drag racing his vintage convertible around Palm Springs, a retired NASA test pilot loses his driver's license. Forced to take public transportation, he meets Caroline. Now he must not only battle with the DMV, he must also find new ways to navigate love and life without his beloved vintage Porsche. The film's cast also includes Christopher Lloyd, Esai Morales, Katrina Bowden, and Carlos Miranda. This definitely seems like a "for adults only" kind of comedy, if you know what I mean. I'm not even old enough for it. And it looks like Lloyd is the best part about it, having all the fun as his wacky friend. ›››

Discovering her father's well-kept secret allows Artemis to understand her father, in a way she was not able before, therefore love him truly for the first time. Homeless Lives in El Paso, Texas in 'Dirty Feathers' Doc Promo Trailer

Dirty Feathers Trailer

"God gave us everything to also help those…" Cinetic has revealed a promo trailer for an indie documentary titled Dirty Feathers, premiering at this year's Berlin Film Festival kicking off next week. The film is a "poetic and humane portrait of the residents of a shelter in El Paso, Texas" from a producer of What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire? previously. Hear the story of two lovers, and others as they struggle to live. "On the streets of the US-Mexican border towns of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, we meet several people – including a grieving father, a war veteran and a 16-year-old – who are living without a home. At night, many of them sleep in the shelters of the OC, the Opportunity Center for the Homeless in El Paso, but during the day it is a matter of somehow surviving on the streets. Together and individually, they reflect on their past, their backgrounds and the here and now and share their dreams, their desires and their hopes for the future that are keeping them alive." This looks like a tough watch, but still meaningful in its intentions. ›››

First Trailer for German Romantic Drama 'Copilot' Playing at Berlinale

Copilot Trailer

"You must always stay with me… You must always keep my secrets." The Match Factory has revealed a festival promo trailer for an indie German film titled Copilot, the latest feature from German filmmaker Anne Zohra Berrached of Two Mothers and 24 Weeks previously. The film is premiering at the Berlin Film Festival next week and it's still looking for international distribution. The German title is Die Welt wird eine andere sein (also listed as Die Frau des Piloten on IMDb) which translates directly to The world will be different, which is a much more evocative title than "Copilot". The film is a love story between two German Muslim people, but one day one of them disappears, leaving the other completely shattered. "Anne Zohra Berrached's film comprises several layers that are all of equal importance. It is a love story, but it is also an exploration of cultural differences, truth and faith, trust and delusion." The key cast includes Canan Kir, Roger Azar, Özay Fecht, Jana Julia Roth, Ceci Chuh, and Nicolas Chaoui. This looks superb. ›››

Watch: End of the World Short Film 'Red Rover' by Brooke Goldfinch

Red Rover Short Film

"You won't be able to see it until it's about to hit." It's the end of the world as we know it… and I feel fine! How about some apocalyptic cinema to relax you? This short film Red Rover originally premiered in 2015, but is just now being featured online thanks to a feature from Short of the Week. It's written & directed by Australian filmmaker Brooke Goldfinch, who was inspired by the news of a cult predicting the end of the world, so she started asking her friends "how they would spend their final hours." It follows two teenagers from a remote religious community who head to town looking for others after their Evangelical parents tell them an asteroid will soon destroy the Earth. Starring Natalie Racoosin and Christopher M. Gray as Lauren and Conrad. This film is especially melancholic, but has a beautifully tragic ending that makes it all worth it. Low key filmmaking that is meant to make you think about what matters, rather than how it ends. ›››

Cosmo Jarvis Puts on a Mask in Unsettling Trailer for 'Funny Face' Film

Funny Face Trailer

"Money!!!!" Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Funny Face, the latest from indie filmmaker Tim Sutton (Memphis, Dark Knight, Donnybrook), who often makes low key unsettling films where nothing much happens. The destruction of his grandparents' home leads a young man to take revenge under a masked persona. It's kind of a different take on Joker. Cosmo Jarvis stars as a disturbed man from Coney Island who dons the menacing “Funny Face” mask, transforming himself into a makeshift superhero with a rage disorder as he seeks revenge on the Real Estate Developer of a soulless high rise that has displaced his grandparents. Also stars Jonny Lee Miller, Dela Meskienyar, Victor Garber, Dan Hedaya, Jeremy Bobb, and Rhea Perlman. This seems like one of those "acquired taste" kind of films. ›››

This also already debuted on Shudder streaming last fall, but we're just now catching up with this final trailer (we first posted a teaser a few years back). This anthology film features four unique horror stories that progress through four decades - a '50s housewife struggles with a mysterious presence in her bathroom; a '60s college boy gets a taste of his own fraternizing medicine; and a '70s husband makes some tough decisions about his wife; culminating in '80s-set The Babysitter Murders. The film is wrapped around with a story featuring a young girl who enters a secret room in a mortuary and learns the backstory of the mortician’s favorite deaths. First Teaser Trailer for Pixar's 'Luca' Movie Set on the Italian Riviera

"But there's just one thing… No one can find out." Disney has revealed a teaser trailer for Pixar's next new original movie titled Luca, the feature directorial debut of Italian storyboard artist Enrico Casarosa (who directed the Pixar short La Luna as well). Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the film is about two friends and an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. But both boys are actually sea monsters from the water. Casarosa explains his inspiration: "I met my best friend when I was 11. I was really shy and I found this troublemaker of a kid… I wanted to make a movie about those kinds of friendships that help you grow up." The Pixar movie pays homage to Fellini and other classic Italian filmmakers, "with a dash of Miyazaki." There's no voice cast revealed yet for Luca and Alberto. "The most awkward period of your life… that’s when we were in front of the cameras." Hulu has released an official trailer for a documentary called Kid 90, stylized as just kid 90, looking back at life in the 90s. The film is a "time capsule" rediscovery - an intimate look at young Hollywood starlets growing up in the 1990s, using hundreds of hours of footage captured by Soleil Moon Frye. As a teen in the 90s and a child actor, Soleil Moon carried a video camera everywhere she went documenting her friends as they grew up in Hollywood and New York City. After all this time, she finally goes back to revisit all the old videos of young celebrities, and share them with us. Some of the people seen in this: Mark-Paul Gosselaar, David Arquette, Stephen Dorff, Balthazar Getty, and Beverly Hills 90210's Brian Austin Green. Official Trailer for 'Godardian' Black Activism Film 'The Inheritance'

The Inheritance Trailer

"Playful, erudite, and boundary blurring." Grasshopper Film has revealed an official trailer for an indie docu-drama titled The Inheritance, which originally premiered at both the Toronto and New York Film Festivals last fall. The film marks the first feature from Ephraim Asili - "a filmmaker, artist, educator and DJ whose work focuses on the African diaspora as a cultural force." A young man inherits his grandmother's house and, with the encouragement of his girlfriend, turns it into a Black socialist collective where the local community forms the basis of its family. It's a scripted drama with documentary elements. Grasshopper says: "Ceaselessly finding commonalties between politics, humor, and philosophy, with Black authors and radicals at its edges, The Inheritance is a remarkable film about the world as we know it." Another US Trailer for Epic Chinese War Movie 'The Eight Hundred'

The Eight Hundred Trailer

"Don't back down!" CMC has released one more official US trailer for the war epic The Eight Hundred, to promote its streaming release this week in the US. It broke box office records in China last summer even in the midst of pandemic lockdowns. The epic war film is set in 1937 and is a jingoistic true story about a group of Chinese soldiers and draft dodgers that put up a four-day defense of a Shanghai warehouse complex, just as Japanese forces are overwhelming China. Another of these intense 300-esque movies about how heroic these patriots are defending their country. The film's cast includes Ou Hao, Jiang Wu, Zhang Yi, Wang Qianyuan, Huang Zhi Zhong, and Zhang Cheng. This still does look like China's Saving Private Ryan, about the tenacity and courage of soldiers fighting for their home. And the action sequences look incredible. ›››

The trailer reveals a bit more - everything takes place around a meteor shower, and both of them seem to be hiding some secrets. But there's a hint in this trailer that makes me wonder if this is an update on Ruby Sparks, and he "imagined" this perfect woman? We'll see. It originally debuted in 1991, but didn't play at film festivals until 1992 when it showed at the Berlin Film Festival (where Cheung won Best Actress); it didn't even open in the US until 1994. The film is a biopic telling the story of 1930's Chinese actress Lingyu Ruan, played by the very talented Maggie Cheung. As The Film Stage explains: "Lingyu, who committed suicide at the age of 24 in 1935 after a tumultuous private life that was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids—and began to mirror the melodramas that brought her fame." The film's cast includes Han Chin, Tony Leung, Carina Lau, Waise Lee, Lily Li, Lawrence Ng, and Cecilia Yip. Review: 'I Care a Lot' is a Mashup of Genres with a Gratifying Finale

I Care a Lot Review

When we think of "elders", we usually think of our grandparents or grand-uncles, or even that nice lady who works in a grocery store and always talks to you and asks you about your life whenever you stop by. This is normal. However, shady legal guardian Marla Grayson in I Care a Lot, filmmaker J Blakeson's latest film (after The Disappearance of Alice Creed and The 5th Wave), only thinks of them as a constant flood of cash. Blakeson's dark comedy thriller is a chaotic mix of genres, a crazy rollercoaster ride, and it certainly saves itself with a stellar cast and a storyline that is interesting enough to keep us invested right up until the end. ›››

This is premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in a few weeks as a Competition selection, and still doesn't have any distribution set yet. As the commander is killed, Semetka has to overcome his fears and take command of the unit. Starring Ferenc Szabó, Tamás Garbacz, László Bajkó, Gyula Franczia, and Ernő Stuhl. Monster Seafood Wars Trailer

"Let them… eat!" Get ready for the giant "Monster Seafood Wars" fight to begin!! A new trailer has debuted for this goofy, low-budget Japanese body-suit-kaiju creation from filmmaker Minoru Kawasaki. It recently premiered at last year's Fantasia Film Festival and already opened in Japan last summer, but there's still no US release set yet. Monster Seafood Wars (also stylized Monster SeaFood Wars) is a goofy comedy film about a "gigantic mutated squid monster" that attacks Tokyo. So they create the "Seafood Monster Attack Team (SMAT)" to fight the monster, but then even more giant seafood monsters show up, "plunging the world into culinary chaos." Sounds fun, doesn't it? Starring Keisuke Ueda and Ayano Christie Yoshida. This looks as crazy ridiculous as it sounds, which is part of the fun. Fantasia describes it as "a love letter to classic kaiju cinema, and a delicious homage to Japanese seafood cuisine on top of that!" Sounds delicious. ›››

Bailee Madison in Christian Camp Love Story 'A Week Away' Trailer

A Week Away Trailer

"You didn't tell me this was church camp?!" Netflix has released an official trailer for A Week Away, a big summer camp musical teen love story film from music video director Roman White. Launching on Netflix in March, for those interested in something extra sweet and cheesy. Troubled teen Will Hawkins has a run-in with the law that puts him at an important crossroad: go to juvenile detention or attend a Christian summer camp. At first a fish-out-of-water, Will opens his heart, discovers love with a camp regular, and a sense of belonging in the last place he expected to find it. Of course he did. The film stars Kevin Quinn and Bailee Madison as the lovers, plus Jahbril Cook, Kat Conner Sterling, Iain Tucker, with David Koechner and Sherri Shepherd. Aside from the religious aspects, this looks like dance-able, magical, summer fun. ›››

New Trailer for Action Thriller 'SAS: Red Notice' with Sam Heughan

SAS: Red Notice Trailer

"Get down there and kill her." Vertical has released a new trailer for SAS: Red Notice, an international action-thriller from Norwegian filmmaker Magnus Martens. A small army of well trained criminals have hijacked the Eurostar deep beneath the English Channel. Now with 400 hostages, the plan is to blow up the English Channel declaring economic war on a government with plenty of their own secrets. Little do they know, they have one too many hostages, as SAS operator Tom Buckingham is on the train. With the woman he loves and an unborn baby also on board, Tom has one chance to stop Laszlo and his band of criminals. I admit this a cool setup, but it does look like direct-to-DVD action junk, for the most part. This stars Sam Heughan, Ruby Rose, Andy Serkis, Tom Hopper, Owain Yeoman, and Tom Wilkinson. Described as a "provocative and authentic portrayal of an emergency response operation" with some revenge added in. ›››

Watch: '30 Minutes of Relaxing Visuals from Studio Ghibli' from HBO

Relaxing Visuals from Studio Ghibli

Ohhh my Studio Ghibli, you make my heart flutter, always and forever. As part of promotion for the entire Studio Ghibli collection (sans Grave of the Fireflies) on HBO Max, the streaming service has made a video for YT that is nothing but – exactly as the title says – "30 Minutes of Relaxing Visuals from Studio Ghibli." And it's just heaven. I know, I know, it's just a YouTube promo and supercut of some of the most peaceful scenes from Ghibli films, but I love it anyway. And we all need some peace right now, with a tumultuous and deadly and deranged world out there. I have been collecting random tidbits of Ghibli art in folders on my computer for years, but this is a dream mashup - putting all the most beautiful shots into one calming video. ›››

'Black Art: In the Absence of Light' HBO Documentary Official Trailer

Black Art: In the Absence of Light Doc Trailer

"Whenever you made work, it ought to be about something… And it ought to be about something that mattered." Another "how did we miss this when it was first released?!" trailer to feature. Black Art: In the Absence of Light is a documentary already available to watch via HBO that was initially released earlier this month for Black History Month. Inspired by the late David Driskell's landmark 1976 exhibition, “Two Centuries of Black American Art," the documentary Black Art: In the Absence of Light offers an illuminating introduction to the work of some of the foremost Black visual artists working today. Directed by filmmaker Sam Pollard, who also made the outstanding MLK/FBI doc released this year. The film shines a light on the extraordinary impact of Driskell's exhibit on generations of Black artists who have staked a claim on their rightful place within the art world. Featuring "insights and context from scholars and historians, along with interviews from a new generation of working African American curators and artists." Looks like a must see. ›››

Trailer for Crackle's 'Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story' Doc

Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story

"You want the truth? I'll give you the truth." Crackle has released an official trailer for a documentary called Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story, which will debut streaming as a five-part series about the story behind video game giant Nintendo. The focus seems to be on the rise and prominence of Nintendo in America, not so much its origins in Japan, as told through interviews with many game industry veterans. We love Nintendo and good docs and can't help posting about this anyway. Via Nintendo Enthusiast, the film features interviews with "actor Wil Wheaton, actor Alison Haislip, Nintendo of America co-founder Ron Judy, Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, former Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske, former Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé, and Xbox head Phil Spencer. But there are even more knowledgeable industry figures in the documentary where that came from, such as Digital Eclipse Editorial Director Chris Kohler, Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski, and composer Tommy Tallarico." It looks like a fun trip back through history. ›››

Watch: VFX Artists Redo the Balloon House in 'Up' with Real Physics

Up Balloon House

"After crunching all of the numbers…" This is super cool! The YouTube creators called Corridor Crew (or Corridor Digital) made a video looking at the balloon house from Pixar's Up with the goal of creating a VFX sequence based on actual physics. How many balloons would it really take and what would that actually look like? Watch this to find out. The video also plays like a short doc, examining the origins of balloons and then taking us through the actual real-life examples of people trying solo flight with actual balloons (see: David Blaine's stunt, Jonathan Trappe's balloon house, etc.) and they reference other cinema videos from The Film Theorists (also on YouTube). So even if we already know the answer to "what would it take?", this is still an entertaining watch as they try to work through the solutions and visualize it. Check out the Up video below. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Dutch' Movie About Drug Kingpins in New Jersey

Dutch Trailer

"What did you get me into?" Faith Media Distribution has revealed an official trailer for a New Jersey crime drama titled Dutch, from filmmakers Preston A. Whitmore II & David Wolfgang. Dutch introduces a player who will use any means necessary to dominate the streets and beyond. For Bernard James, Jr. aka "Dutch", survival is the ultimate score and power is the deadliest high of all. There isn't an angle he can't work or a woman he can't seduce. Then when he gains control of an African drug lord's stolen heroin business, Dutch quickly makes it the most feared drug empire on the East Coast. Naturally, there are now plenty of enemies vowing to take him down, including a vengeful Mafia heir, an ambitious D.A., and a conscience-stricken former friend. The cast includes Lance Gross as Dutch, Jeremy Meeks, Macy Gray, Gunna, Natasha Marc, Tyrin Turner, Melissa Williams, Markice Moore, and Michael Blackson. This looks solid, but it also looks like a TV show with the glossy sheen of some serial crime drama more than a feature film. ›››

Jeremy Piven in Philly Neighborhood Comedy 'Last Call' Official Trailer

Last Call Trailer

"Did you forget where you came from?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for a dramedy titled Last Call, from filmmaker / producer Paolo Pilladi. The film's early working title was Crabs in a Bucket, which seems amusing but probably doesn't really describe the story well. A "success story" real estate developer returns to his old Philly neighborhood and ends up obligated to stay to help ensure his parents’ ailing family business gets back on course. While there, he must decide to raze or resurrect the family bar while dealing with other questions about his life and what to do next. The film stars Jeremy Piven, Taryn Manning, Bruce Dern, Zach McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, and Jack McGee. Doesn't look that great, but it does look like a sweet & funny middle-aged look at "going home" and reconnecting with your old neighborhood. ›››

Official Trailer for Freaky, Twisted Psychological Horror 'The Stylist'

The Stylist Trailer

"I guess we all want what we don't have…" Arrow Video has unveiled an official US trailer for the twisted psychological horror-thriller The Stylist, which originally premiered at last year's Fantastic Fest and Sitges Film Festival in the fall. The film is based on co-writer/director Jill Gevargizian's award-winning short film of the same name. A lonely hair stylist becomes obsessed with the lives of her clients and descends into murderous madness, working as a serial killer by night and collecting their scalps. But one day she tries to leave her deadly side behind, only to "discover that repressing your deadly desires is easier said than done." Starring Najarra Townsend as Claire, with Brea Grant, Laura Kirk, Kyle Ament, Millie Milan, and Sarah McGuire. This looks freaky and similar to the scalper horror Maniac, but reinvented for the times. ›››

Victoria Justice in First Trailer for NYC Romantic Thriller Film 'Trust'

Trust Trailer

"You have no idea of the whole story here." Vertical Ent. has revealed an official trailer for the film Trust, a romantic thriller set in New York City involving "exceptional temptations." The story follows a New York City gallery owner named Brooke and her husband Owen, who get mixed up in high society affairs as each them are seduced by another. Victoria Justice stars as Brooke, and she's joined by Matthew Daddario, Katherine McNamara, Lucien Laviscount, Ronny Chieng, and Rosa Gilmore. This looks like it has some slick cinematography, with lots of vibrant neon colors. But it also looks like another of these films full of super attractive people in a wealthy world dealing with issues of sex and power and lies within their super attractive wealthy world. But hey, maybe there's something entertaining about watching that. Have a look. ›››

First Trailer for Submarine Drama 'Buoyancy' Starring Rebecca Finch

Buoyancy Trailer

"If you can't go out to have fun, you have to go inwards." High Octane Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie "sci-fi" thriller titled Buoyancy, the feature directorial debut of Dutch filmmaker Roel Leijten. The film tells the story of an ambitious young woman who is invited on a submarine by an eccentric entrepreneur. This is very clearly a fictional version of the horrifying true story of eccentric entrepreneur Peter Madsen, who murdered a young woman on his submarine. This was also turned into a doc last year called Into the Deep. Buoyancy stars Rebecca Finch, Michael Wagner, Portia Booroff, and Simon Rhys-Jones. Alas, this film looks super cheesy with so many elements of the story excessively exaggerated. ›››

First Trailer for TIFF Favorite Jewish Funeral Comedy 'Shiva Baby'

Shiva Baby Trailer

"I already have a plan and a path, so–" Utopia has unveiled the first trailer for the acclaimed indie comedy titled Shiva Baby, which premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival and was one of the big breakouts from the fest. The film marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Emma Seligman, who channels her own personal experiences to make this an authentically hilarious comedy. College student Danielle must cover her tracks when she unexpectedly runs into her sugar daddy at a "shiva" (a Jewish tradition of seven days' formal mourning for the dead, beginning immediately after the funeral)—along with her parents, ex-girlfriend and family friends also in attendance. That sounds mortifying. Rachel Sennott stars in this as Danielle, with Molly Gordon, Polly Draper, Danny Deferrari, Fred Melamed, and Dianna Agron. Everyone was raving about this at TIFF last year, and it's bound to be a sleeper hit once it opens this spring. ›››

Watch: Supercut Mashup of Giant Moon Scenes in Different Movies

Giant Moon Scenes

"Let me play among the stars, Let me see what spring is like on a-Jupiter and Mars." Hey Moon, why you look so good? Why you look so big?! Uh, is that normal…? This amusing and entertaining supercut created by editor / video essayist Ariel Avissar is worth a watch. This "Supermoon" mashup features a bunch of shots of gigantic Moon-in-the-background scenes from movies of all kinds. Everything from Black Swan to Frozen to The Lion King to Catwoman to Joe vs the Volcano to Shrek to Sin City and plenty of others. This also reminds me of a doc made up of nothing but the shots of stars from movies (it's called simply Star by Johann Lurf). For those curious, the Moon looks big on the horizon because of its relative size to the Earth. ›››

Official Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller 'Doors' About Millions of Alien Doors

Doors Sci-Fi Trailer

"Maybe it takes us somewhere?" Epic Pics has unveiled the official trailer for an indie sci-fi feature titled Doors, an anthology film about the doors. Without warning, millions of mysterious alien "doors" suddenly appear around the globe. In a rush to determine the reason for their arrival, mankind must work together to understand the purpose of these cosmic anomalies. Bizarre incidences occurring around the sentient doors leads humanity to question their own existence and an altered reality as they attempt to enter them. The film is directed by three filmmakers, each with a different perspective: a ragtag band of high school students discover a door for the first time, volunteers explore the parallel reality beyond the threshold, a lonesome hermit manages the seemingly impossible: establishing communication with a door. The full cast includes Josh Peck, with Lina Esco, Wilson Bethel, Kyp Malone, Dugan O’Neal, Kathy Khanh, Julianne Collins, Aric Generette Floyd, Rory Anne Dahl, Kristina Lear, Bira Vanara, Bailee Cowperthwaite, Darius Levanté, and David Hemphill. This looks really cool - I'm digging all the different stories and all the footage in this trailer. ›››

A Strange Creature in a Small Town: 'The Arbors' Sci-Fi Horror Trailer

The Arbors Trailer

"I just found… something. I've never seen anything like it…" Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi horror thriller titled The Arbors, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Clayton Witmer. The poster for this is "holy shit!" freaky, which is exactly what caught my eye at first. Set against a dreary small town, The Arbors follows a reclusive locksmith struggling to keep ties with his younger brother. His life takes an unsettling turn after finding a strange small creature and forming a mysterious connection. After a string of unexplained killings, the creature's true nature is soon revealed… And it seems very hungry. The cast includes Drew Matthews, Ryan Davenport, Sarah Cochrane, Daryl Munroe, Lexi Rose, and Brooks Addis. It is the perfect little trailer because it doesn't reveal much at all, but I'm sold anyway. ›››

First Teaser Trailer for Mamoru Hosoda's New Animated Film 'Belle'

Belle Teaser Trailer

"Who is she?" Charades in France has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new film titled Belle made by acclaimed, award-winning Japanese animation director Mamoru Hosoda (of the films The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, and Mirai). The short title is just Belle (perhaps a reference to Beauty and the Beast), but the film's full title is Belle: The Princess of Dragons and Freckles and it's currently set to open in Japan this June. This one is about a teenage girl who lives between modern-day Japan and a virtual world called "U." The story follows her as she makes a new friend and "embarks on a journey of adventures and love both in their quest of becoming who they truly are." No voice cast is confirmed yet, and this teaser is only 30 seconds long but it looks magnificent already. ›››

Amundsen: The Greatest Expedition Trailer

"We may as well be on a foreign planet." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a new official US trailer for the Norwegian adventure drama Amundsen: The Greatest Expedition, from director Espen Sandberg. This is finally arriving in the US on VOD in April after originally opening in Norway back in 2019 (we posted this teaser a few years back). PÃ¥l Sverre Hagen stars as the iconic Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who explored the North Pole in the early 1900s. Amundsen’s dream of reaching the North Pole haunts him throughout his life. He's obsessed with the idea of discovering the last unchartered lands of the world. While he wins the race against Robert Scott to becomes the first man ever to conquer the South Pole, Amundsen will sacrifice everything to be the first to explore the icy lands of the North Pole. Also starring Katherine Waterston, Jonas Strand Gravli, Trond Espen Seim, Ole Christoffer Ertvaag, Mads SjøgÃ¥rd Pettersen, and Christian Rubeck. Another New US Trailer for WWII Thriller 'Six Minutes to Midnight'

Six Minutes to Midnight Trailer

"My girls are not the enemy…" IFC Films has also debuted a new US trailer for the UK thriller set just days before WWII began called Six Minutes to Midnight, the latest from director Andy Goddard (of Set Fire to the Stars, A Kind of Murder). We just featured the UK trailer for this yesterday, but there's even more footage in here. Set mostly at a finishing school on the south coast of England, the films tells the story of a teacher and a headmistress. 17 days before WWII, an English teacher and his camera disappear on a coastal boarding school with 20 German teen girls. Miller gets the job 6 days later, secretly trying to find out what happened. The film's impressive ensemble cast is lead by Eddie Izzard as Mr. Miller, with Judi Dench, James D'Arcy, Jim Broadbent, Kevin Eldon, Carla Juri, Nigel Lindsay, David Schofield, and Maria Dragus. It looks like this becomes an edge-of-your-seat thriller once they figure out the high value of the students and their importance in the war, with plans to do something sneaky with them. IFFR 2021: 'Riders of Justice' from Denmark is Extra Dark & Complex

Riders of Justice Review

Screened as a selection of the virtual 2021 Rotterdam Film Festival. There is always room for more dark comedies in the world of cinema. Laughter makes everything better. The latest film from Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen is yet another very dark comedy, which is precisely his forte as a filmmaker. He's written dozens of screenplays with complex characters, and directed a handful of films previously that also involve complex dynamics between good and bad people. He gracefully and gleefully explores that gray area inbetween good and bad, and takes us on the journey into their experiences. Riders of Justice (originally Retfærdighedens Ryttere in Danish) is his latest film, both written and directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, and it's so astoundingly dark and strangely twisted and wickedly hilarious. I loved it through and through. ›››
