First Trailer for Smash Hit Horror Film 'Host' Made Entirely on Zoom

Host Horror Film

"Evil will find you… even when you stay home." You've heard about it, but have you seen it yet? Shudder has debuted an official trailer for the crazy new indie horror film Host, the latest feature from acclaimed UK horror filmmaker Rob Savage. We've featured a number of his shorts, including Salt and the creepy attic Zoom short from earlier this year. Savage followed that up with an even more ambitious idea - a 50-minute feature made entirely over Zoom. Starring Haley Bishop, Radina Drandova, Edward Linard, Jemma Moore, Caroline Ward, and Emma Louise Webb, who also operated their own cameras, helped pull off their own practical effects, and lit their own scenes. Due to social distancing precautions, Savage never set foot in the same room as his actors at any point during production and instead directed them remotely. This has been receiving rave reviews all week and is available on Shudder now. It's one of this year's horror hits. ›››

Portuguese Masterpiece 'The Green Years' New 4K Restoration Trailer

The Green Years Trailer

"Be very careful with the boys in Lisbon." Grasshopper Film has released a new US trailer for Paulo Rocha's The Green Years, a 1963 coming-of-age romantic drama from Portugal. The film won a few awards during its initial premiere at film festivals back in 1963, but never got an official US release. The film has been restored in glorious 4K (overseen by Pedro Costa and the Portugeuse Cinematheque) and is getting a virtual cinema re-release in August this summer. Julio, aged nineteen, has just left the provinces to settle down in the outskirts of Lisbon. He lives in a poor area with his uncle Afonso and starts working as an apprentice shoemaker. At the shop, he gets to know Ilda, a young housemaid and regular customer. Ilda is pretty, joyful and modern and Julio falls for her. The two young people, although very different from each other, soon fall for each other. The film stars Rui Gomes, Isabel Ruth, Ruy Furtado, & Paulo Renato. Acclaimed as a "masterpiece" and "striking in its context and its mastery of filmmaking." It looks like a ravishing romance. ›››

First Trailer for Indian 'Nightmare Odyssey of a DJ' Horror Film 'Kriya'

Kriya Trailer

Sit down before you watch this. With the fall festival season about to kick off, some exciting new films are about to premiere. Kriya is an Indian film described as "the nightmare odyssey of a young DJ named Neel (Noble Luke) who is picked up one fateful night by the beautiful Sitara, only to be thrust into a hallucinatory world of ritual magic surrounding the imminent death of her father." That sounds a bit vague, but perhaps it's best to leave it that way. "It's an aesthetically beautiful film, mystically atmospheric and imbued with a creeping unease that casts an uncommon spell." Co-Produced by Andy Starke (of In Fabric) and Pete Tombs (of Free Fire), with an unforgettable score by Jim Williams, "Kriya is a strange and wondrous nightmare odyssey of ritual magic. It demands to be met on its own terms and rewards the curious with unexpected charms. Light a candle and prepare yourself." That's one hell of a pitch - I'm definitely curious. Take a look. ›››

New US Trailer for True Story 'Misbehaviour' with Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Misbehaviour Trailer

"Forget this!" Shout Factory has released a new US trailer for the UK film Misbehaviour, a quirky comedy about badass women fighting back in the 70s. It already opened in the UK earlier this year. The film tells the true story of what happened during the 1970 Miss World competition in London, a beauty pageant that was the most viewed TV show at the time. A group of women from the Women's Liberation Movement disrupted the show, and even when the show continued, Miss Grenada went on to become the first black woman to be crowned Miss World. The film stars Keira Knightley, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Miss Grenada, Lesley Manville, Jessie Buckley, Keeley Hawes, Rhys Ifans, Phyllis Logan, Suki Waterhouse, Emma Corrin, plus Greg Kinnear as legendary American comedian Bob Hope (who hosted Miss World at the time). This looks great! Raucous and witty and amusing and devious. Catch up with the film later this year. ›››

"Where did you find that?" "Upstairs in the junk room… It looks like it's from the 80s or something." This lovely, intimate short film is called Handheld and after premiering at film festivals earlier this year it's available to watch online. Made by filmmakers Pisie Hochheim & Tony Oswald, the film is about an old forgotten handicam that disrupts the chaotic bedtime routine of a single mother and her young son. Starring Jordan Gosnell, Emery Oswald, and James Gonzales. Our friends at Short of the Week say it "blurs the line between fiction and documentary to make for a relatable, moving watch." Agreed. Liam Neeson is a Notorious Bank Robber in Trailer for 'Honest Thief'

Honest Thief Trailer

"I'm turning myself in." Briarcliff has released an official trailer for crime action thriller Honest Thief, from producer / director Mark Williams (A Family Man). This was set to open earlier in the summer, but has been rescheduled for release in October this fall. Wanting to lead an honest life, a notorious bank robber turns himself in, only to be double-crossed by two ruthless FBI agents. When the feds come after him, he must fight back to clear his name. Liam Neeson stars, with a cast including Kate Walsh, Jai Courtney, Jeffrey Donovan, Anthony Ramos, Robert Patrick, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. As great as Liam Neeson is, this just looks so derivative and bland. The best part about this is making the feds the bad guys. ›››

New Trailer for 4K Re-Release of Concert Doc 'Jazz on a Summer's Day'

Jazz on a Summer's Day Trailer

"We are at the jazz festival, and let me tell you it is really wonderful." Kino Lorber has revealed an official trailer for a 4K restoration re-release of a classic concert doc called Jazz on a Summer's Day. Trailer for Drug Drama 'Sno Babies' with Katie Kelly & Paola Andino

Sno Babies Trailer

"One bad puff can put you in the ground." Better Noise Films has revealed the official trailer for an indie drama titled Sno Babies, one of the first feature films from editor-turned-filmmaker Bridget Smith. Sno Babies depicts the grim realities of addiction and its effects on families. Kristen and Hannah are likeable, college-bound teens - and heroin addicts - hiding their plight behind the façade of middle-class suburbia. This is one of those dramatic films where the innuendo in the title is actually a reference to drugs, and not something else. Starring Katie Kelly & Paola Andino as Kristen & Hannah, with Michael Lombardi, Evangeline Young, Niko Terho, and Joanne Baron. This looks like a powerful film about drugs and addiction, but it seems a bit too cliche and heavy-handed overall to really make an impact. Still worth a look. ›››

"I don't want to be a puppet…" Vertigo Releasing from the UK has debuted a new trailer for their upcoming release of the Italian update on Pinocchio, from director Matteo Garrone (Roman Summer, Gomorrah, Tale of Tales, Dogman). This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year after opening in Italy on Christmas last year. This new take on the story from Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with a full cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. Cyclists Short Film

"From the first moment… I discovered a whole world of stories and characters inside [of] Vasko's work." Another award-winning animated short has finally made its way online and it's a must watch. Cyclists is an amusing animated short by Croatian animation filmmaker Veljko Popovic, inspired by the art of Vasko Lipovac. This originally premiered at the Annecy Film Festival in 2018, and won Best Short Film that year. The cycling season is nearing its grand finale. During the final race, the two men in the lead are competing for more than the Grand Trophy; they are fighting for the affection of a lady and fulfilment of their erotic fantasies. Meanwhile, the small town prepares for the arrival of a large ocean liner and its dashing captain. Martin Margiela has never shown his face to the public, preferring the clothes to speak for themselves. Likewise, in this fashion doc the designer picks pivotal pieces from his collections. Watch: Alex Widdowson's Fantastic Animated Short 'Music & Clowns'

Music & Clowns Short Film

"I don't think he wants to be a clown, I think he likes what they portray: which is a nice and simple mime of life." What a gorgeous little film. British animation filmmaker Alex Widdowson introduces Music & Clowns perfectly: "My brother, Jamie, has a profound learning disability. Despite being close to nonverbal, he demonstrates charisma, a sharp sense of humour, and emotional sensitivity. I team up with my parents to discuss what it is like caring for someone with Down syndrome. We piece together fragments of insight to gain a sense of his inner life." And the result is something beautiful. There's a variety of animation styles in this, and some seriously funny natural comedy. Alex wants to challenge the stigma of the D word - disability. "I believe people should be able to base life-changing decisions on accurate information. But I also feel that a diagnosis does not reflect my brother’s human worth. This [short] attempts to complement the medical narrative with first-hand stories of what it is like to have someone with Down syndrome." It's worth a watch. ›››

Nolan's 'Tenet' Will Open First Internationally, Then Select Cities in US

Tenet

It's official! And hopefully it won't get delayed again! Warner Bros has announced that Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated summer action spy thriller Tenet has been rescheduled for release at the end of August / beginning of September. It was initially scheduled to open on July 17th in the summer, and Hollywood was hoping it might be the big movie when cinemas re-open. But with America failing to contain and control the coronavirus, they had to push it back. It was then rescheduled for August 15th, but it won't make that date either. Instead, WB has decided to do something unprecedented with a $200+ million blockbuster - release it internationally in 70+ countries first (where the virus is under control and cinemas have safely re-opened) and then release it, carefully, in "select cities" in the US one week later. Hopefully no more delays this time. ›››

HBO has revealed an official trailer for We Are Who We Are, a new mini-series created by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, director of I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, and Suspiria. We Are Who We Are follows a group of teens growing up on an American Army base outside of Venice, Italy struggling to find their own identities as they move into young-adulthood. It's a coming-of-age drama, but with Guadagnino's refreshing sensibilities, taking place "only in this little slice of America in Italy." The series' primary cast will include familiar faces like Chloë Sevigny, Kid Cudi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Alice Braga, Spence Moore II, and it is lead by newcomers including Jordan Kristine Seamon, Faith Alabi, Francesca Scorsese, Ben Taylor, Corey Knight, Tom Mercier, and Sebastiano Pigazzi. This music really makes this trailer. I cannot wait to watch this. ›››

Another New UK Trailer for Shannon Murphy's Acclaimed 'Babyteeth'

Babyteeth Trailer

"I don't want to hurt you." "So don't." Picturehouse Cinemas in the UK has debuted their own official trailer for Babyteeth, which is finally opening in the UK coming up in August. The film is already available on VOD in the US as of a few months ago. We've posted the original Australian trailer, then the US trailer, and now here's the UK trailer - and it might be the best of the bunch. This Australian bittersweet comedy, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, follows a married couple who discover their terminally ill teenage daughter has fallen in love with a kooky small time drug dealer. Eliza Scanlen stars with Toby Wallace (he won the "Best Young Actor" award), along with Emily Barclay, Eugene Gilfedder, plus Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn as her parents. I also interviewed director Shannon Murphy earlier in June - she's a superbly talented filmmaker. I still highly recommend the film, easily one of the best releases of 2020 so far. ›››

Watch: Mythology Featurette for Scott Cooper's 'Antlers' Horror Film

Antlers Trailer

"A diabolical wickedness that devours mankind." Searchlight Pictures has released a new featurette about the mythology of the horror film Antlers, from director Scott Cooper. The film was originally scheduled to open in April this year, but was delayed due to the pandemic. At first they were planning to reschedule it for this fall, but they have decided to push it all the way back until February 19th, 2021 next year. Antlers also showed up at Comic-Con this weekend with an "At Home" presentation (watch on YouTube) which is where this video is from. In the film, a small-town Oregon teacher and her brother, the local sheriff, become entwined with a young student harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences. It's adapted from a short story called "The Quiet Boy" by Nick Antosca. Antlers stars Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, JT Corbitt, Graham Greene, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane, and Amy Madigan. You can also watch the two trailers for this here & here. This looks seriously freaky, hopefully it will be in theaters in February. ›››

First Trailer for Kevin Smith's Horror Anthology Film 'Killroy Was Here'

Killroy Was Here Trailer

"Close the mouth that cannot tell… And send the monster back to hell." Every year, Kevin Smith hosts a big panel at Comic-Con on Saturday evening. But this year, with Comic-Con cancelled and taking place entirely online, Smith just live-streamed his panel from home. And he always brings a trailer to debut. Killroy Was Here is a horror comedy anthology film made by Kevin Smith. He filmed in late 2017 & early 2018 and it's finally getting finished and ready for release sometime in 2021. The various horror anthology stories are centered around the phenomenon of the "Kilroy Was Here" graffiti, about some weird bald dude with a big nose sticking over a wall. The ensemble cast includes Azita Ghanizada, Ryan O'Nan, Harley Quinn Smith, Chris Jericho, Justin Kucsulain, and Ralph Garman. This definitely looks like another Kevin Smith having fun with his friends & family kind of film. Not that scary, a bit weird, a bit funny. Check it out. ›››

Joe Manganiello is From Another Dimension in 'Archenemy' Teaser

Archenemy Teaser Trailer

It's time to meet Max Fist. Voltage Pictures has debuted a promo teaser trailer for a gritty new genre film titled Archenemy, set to arrive sometime in 2021. This film is the latest from Daniel Isn't Real director Adam Egypt Mortimer, an intriguing superhero sci-fi action adventure horror crime thriller of sorts (aka a genre mashup!). Joe Manganiello stars as Max Fist, and he claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to Earth. But here he has no powers. No one believes his stories except for a local teen named Hamster, played by Skylan Brooks. This also stars Glenn Howerton, Zolee Griggs, Joseph D. Reitman, and Amy Seimetz. This is only a first look teaser, not too much footage, but dang it's gnarly. This looks brutal and badass. Oh they're definitely going to learn he's for real by the end of this. ›››

Review: Dave Franco's Horror Film 'The Rental' Overstays Its Welcome

The Rental Review

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg is best known for his work in the mumblecore subgenre, writing and directing micro-budget films with an emphasis on naturalistic acting and improvised dialogue. His movies, like 2013's Drinking Buddies and 2014's Happy Christmas, are indie comedy-dramas concerned with the interpersonal relationships and the romantic entanglements of people in their twenties and early thirties. Occasionally, however, Swanberg works in the horror genre, as an actor (The Sacrament, You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die) and director (the V/H/S segment "The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger," which he also starred in). Now, he's collaborating with Dave Franco on the actor's directorial debut, a film titled The Rental, which combines Swanberg's mumblecore and horror sensibilities with mixed results. ›››

First Trailer for Documentary 'Naughty Books' About Erotic Romance

Naughty Books Trailer

"My books have just fallen through the cracks." 1091 has released a trailer for an indie documentary titled Naughty Books, which is indeed all about "naughty books" as the title says. This just premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival earlier this year. Austen Rachlis' doc Naughty Books examines the steamy world of erotic romance, following three self-published authors who go from living at the margins to making millions by transforming their fantasies into fiction and wrestling with the realities of success. "On the surface, this movie is about self-published romance novels, but at its core, it's about women challenging the status quo and stepping forward to tell the world they aren’t ashamed of their sexuality. In [these days] where #MeToo dominates the headlines… Naughty Books celebrates women reclaiming their sexuality on their own terms." ›››

'Top Gun: Maverick' & 'A Quiet Place Part II' Also Delayed Until 2021

Top Gun: Maverick

More pandemic delays to report. Two highly anticipated sequels have been rescheduled - moving from fall 2020 openings until 2021. Unfortunately due to America's inability to control and maintain the coronavirus, cinemas still haven't re-opened and Hollywood studios are getting extra nervous, so they're making a safe choice and pulling big movies from the 2020 schedule and giving an extra year of time for things to return to normal. Joe Kosinski's sequel Top Gun: Maverick has been rescheduled for release July 2nd, 2021 (for 4th of July weekend). And John Krasinski's sequel A Quiet Place Part II has also been rescheduled for release April 23rd, 2021 (more than a year after it was initially set to open). It's exhausting to keep up with all the release date changes and delays, but we're doing our best to make sure our schedule is updated. ›››

Max Zhang & Anderson Silva in Action Film 'Invincible Dragon' Trailer

Invincible Dragon Trailer

"This dragon… how exquisite." Well Go USA has released the official US trailer for a martial arts action movie titled The Invincible Dragon, which originally opened in theaters in China last year. Martial arts superstar Max Zhang plays Kowloon, an eccentric police inspector renowned for his dragon tattoos and, legend has it, his childhood encounter with a nine-headed dragon. "A marvelous detective whose career is blighted by his impulsively violent behavior towards criminals, Kowloon is soon demoted and sent to work in a remote police station." After a series of murders of Hong Kong policewomen, Kowloon is invited back to crack the case – only to lose track of his colleague and fiancée in mysterious circumstances. It's described as "a darkly comic police thriller wrapped around a serial killer mystery, punctuated by a cheeky voice-over narration that adds a touch of the fairy tale to the gritty proceedings." Also stars Anderson Silva, Stephy Tang, Kevin Cheng, JuJu Chan, & Annie Liu. Looks martial arts action fun but nothing more than that. ›››

Add Another Year: Cameron's 'Avatar 2' is Delayed Again Until 2022

Avatar

What a bummer. Yet another delay. Disney, which now owns the company formerly known as 20th Century Fox, has officially announced updated release dates for James Cameron's Avatar sequels that have been in the works for a decade already. We have been playing this game for so many years before. Avatar 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Avatar (originally released in 2009), was initially scheduled for December of 2016. Every year, or every other year, Cameron re-appears and announces that they aren't quite ready and it gets delayed another few years. First they moved it into 2017, then until 2020, then until 2021, where it has been for a while. They officially started filming last year and have been deep into production ever since, with hopes that maybe they'll make that 2021 date. But with the pandemic screwing up everyone's schedules, that won't be the case – Avatar 2 has been rescheduled to open December 16th, 2022 instead. It's what it is. ›››

Watch: Stunning Animated Short 'Simbiosis Carnal' Explores Sexuality

Simbiosis Carnal Short Film

One of the best animated shorts of the decade is now available online. Simbiosis Carnal is a 10-minute animated short made by Spanish animation filmmaker Rocio Alvarez. This premiered at festivals back in 2017, and won tons of awards throughout its run in 2018, and now it's out to watch. "During this animated evocation of the history of desire, the emphasis will be on feminine pleasure, which was for a long time ignored, repressed, and then progressively revealed and liberated. Simbiosis Carnal is a call to the strength of life and to the uninhibited happiness of sexuality in the human being." Featuring original music by the band Why The Eye. It begins as a biological exploration of sexuality and reproduction, then evolves into a study of intimacy and pleasure with humans. It's a remarkably profound illustration of all the good and bad regarding sexuality, and all the controversy and confusion about sex, and all the restrictions modern society has put on (mostly women's) sexuality. Just watch out - this short is NSFW. But it is a must watch anyway. ›››

Official Trailer for Rideshare Killer Thriller 'Spree' Starring Joe Keery

Spree Trailer

"For all of you out there who don't know me, get ready. 'Cause you're about to know me." RLJE Films has released the first official trailer for Spree, a rideshare maniac thriller from filmmaker Eugene Kotlyarenko. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and was one of the most talked about films because it's so crazy and wild and controversial. Thirsty for a following, Kurt Kunkle is a rideshare driver who has figured out a deadly plan to go viral. Desperate for followers and attention, he rigs up cameras all over his cars and begins live streaming his new life as a killer - poisoning riders with the water he offers them. Joe Keery stars as Kurt, with a cast including Sasheer Zamata, Mischa Barton, John DeLuca, Josh Ovalle, Lala Kent, Frankie Grande, plus Kyle Mooney & David Arquette. This is an extremely brutally honest cautionary tale about social media hype and internet fame, and it thrilled the hell out of me. I wrote in my review that it's "the kind of innovative, provocative film I love stumbling across at Sundance." ›››

Watch: Award-Winning Short '-Ship: A Visual Poem' by Terrance Daye

-Ship: A Visual Poem

"You know I love you, right?" Filmmaker and poet Terrance Daye from Long Island, NY put together this short film project called -Ship: A Visual Poem, which won the Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Terrance reveals the origins of his art: "Nearly all of my work is inspired by my experiences growing up queer in a conservative Christian household and the depression that I felt because of it. My work tends to reimagine traditional representations of black male identity while de-stigmatizing mental health within the black community. -Ship: A Visual Poem began as an experiment." He wanted to try fitting bigger themes into a small package - and the result is this 13 minute short. A young black boy learns contradicting lessons of manhood and masculinity on the day of his cousin's funeral. The film stars Antonio J. Watson as Jeremiah, Cheikh M’Baye, Jaime Lincoln Smith, Simbi Kali, Abebaw Edward Silver, Armand Rufen-Blanchette, Stephen Cofield Jr., and Karynrose Bruyning. Very subtle, nuanced storytelling. ›››
