New US Trailer for Hong Sang-soo's Comedy Film 'Yourself and Yours'

Yourself and Yours Trailer

"Shall we drink anyway?" The Cinema Guild has released an official US trailer for yet another Hong Sang-soo film titled Yourself and Yours, which first premiered at the Toronto & San Sebastian Film Festivals in 2016. This is the third Hong Sang-soo film being released this year along with Hill of Freedom and The Woman Who Ran. The story follows a couple that splits one night after an argument about the woman being seen with another man. The next day, she has a series of encounters with other men. But to them it seems she’s not herself… It's described as a "comic mystery" and "delightfully drunken riff on Abbas Kiarostami". Starring Ju-hyuk Kim, Yoo-Young Lee, Kwon Haehyo, Yu Junsang, and Kim Euisung, Yourself and Yours is a "pleasing puzzle full of mistaken identity, excessive drinking and lots of he-said, she-said. As the rumors pile up, Hong asks: In a relationship, how important is it to know everything?" A tough question. ›››

Trailer for Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'We Are Freestyle Love Supreme' Doc

We Are Freestyle Love Supreme Doc Trailer

"And here we are, 15 years later…" Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for an indie documentary titled We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Before the world knew of the Broadway musicals In The Heights and Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda started an improv hip-hop group called "Freestyle Love Supreme" (aka FLS). This doc film chronicles the group's 15-year journey, culminating with shows in 2019. They just finished their final show on Broadway earlier this year. "Filmmaker Andrew Fried began with a small SD camera in the summer of 2005, capturing the early days of Freestyle Love Supreme beatboxing on the sidewalks—unaware of how their story would unfold. Fourteen years later, after directing famed series like "Chef's Table" and "7 Days Out", Fried revisits old footage to craft this fated story. Both poignant and inspired, We Are Freestyle Love Supreme recalls the creative dreams of youth and why this project still means so much to these accomplished performers." Yep. ›››

Official Trailer for Photographer Doc 'Ricky Powell: The Individualist'

Ricky Powell: The Individualist Trailer

"He caught the beauty in what we were doing." An official trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled Ricky Powell: The Individualist, a profile of the iconic NYC photographer Ricky Powell. Powell rose to unexpected fame as an unfiltered street photographer capturing the downtown New York City scene of the 80s and 90s. Eventually befriending and becoming an honorary member of the Beastie Boys entourage and joining them on tour, Powell captured some of the wildest moments in New York fashion, music, and art with his gorgeous and gritty portraits. "With his finger on the pulse of popular culture, it’s indisputable that 'The Rickster' did more than just document the scene—he was the scene. Drugs, sex, art, and hip-hop collide in Josh Swade's fascinating documentary." The film was supposed to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, instead it's debuting online for free as part of the "We Are One" global festival starting this week. ›››

Watch: Compelling Sci-Fi Comedy Short Film 'Vessel' About Romance

Vessel Short Film

"How the people we love we can know so intimately, yet at the same time, know so little about them." A film about "connection". Vessel is an outstanding "Black Mirror"-esque sci-fi short film made by filmmaker Canadian filmmaker Ethan Godel. Godel's short wonders: "What would happen if everything we said on a date was a being fed to us via an earpiece by a person in a van just around the corner?" What kind of world would that be? That's already an intriguing premise, but this film brings it to life in such an enjoyable and satisfying way. Starring Tim Blair and Kasi Mcauley as the couple, plus Joseph Anctil and Veronica Baron their Operators. The film won the CBC Short Film Face Off contest on TV in Canada last year, but now it's available to watch online. It reminds me of the dystopian romance films being made these days, like The Lobster or The One I Love. We should all try to be a bit more authentic with each other, no matter what. ›››

Hurry & View Shane Carruth's Pitch Trailer for Sci-Fi Project 'A Topiary'

A Topiary Trailer

Surprise! This isn't an official trailer, but it is certainly worth watching. And you better hurry…! Filmmaker Shane Carruth posted a trailer online for his long, lost project called A Topiary, an original sci-fi film he was working on for years. But he doesn't know if it will be removed by Vimeo. "This will probably get taken down because I lifted a bunch of shots from films." We first heard about the film around 2013, when Carruth was finishing his other film Upstream Color. It's an intriguing concept involving a group of young pre-teen boys who discover some machine that creates funnels which form various shapes and objects. This trailer does a much better job of visualizing it. This is a "mock-up" or "pitch" trailer, where a filmmaker uses clips & footage from other films to create a "what my film would look like" version of a trailer to sell to studios / financiers. However, it's clear there is some VFX footage made just for this - as seen at the end. Take a look. ›››

"Maybe it's time you learn the truth about your condition." Giant Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Volition, which won the Best Feature award at the Philip K. Dick Film Festival last year. The word "volition" means "a choice or decision made by the will"; making the choice for yourself. The film is about a man afflicted with clairvoyance who tries to change his fate when a series of events leads to a vision of his own imminent murder. An interesting twist. It's described as a "tightly-wound puzzle of a ride", and a "mind-bending science-fiction thriller, where the line between fate and free-will blurs." Starring Adrian Glynn McMorran, Magda Apanowicz, John Cassini, Frank Cassini, Aleks Paunovic, and Bill Marchant. When a personal tragedy ignites a national outcry, everything that Edythe has worked so tirelessly for is at stake. This isn't the first time Morris has dabbled in LSD, his Netflix series "Wormwood" is also about the CIA experimenting with psychedelics. The film is inspired by Harcourt-Smith's memoir, "Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story", and Morris interviews her to discuss her history with Leary before he became an informant for the FBI. Watch: 2D Animated, Amusing Cartoon Short Film 'Speedy the Turtle'

Speedy the Turtle Short Film

"If it isn't the town's newest hero…" It's time to meet Speedy the Turtle! This fun, 2D animated short film is made by a Dutch filmmaker named Nigel Lievaart as his graduation project at Utrecht School of the Arts in 2018. He now works at a studio called KLOMP! in the Netherlands. Speedy the Turtle is a "Saturday Morning Cartoon"-inspired short about a speedy hero who runs more like Sonic the Hedgehog than a slow-and-steady-wins-the-race turtle. He must battle a big bad Tiki god named Tori. Starring the voices of Jacob Barrens. Nigel originally came up with the character when he was a kid, but brought him back for his final animation project. He did almost all of the animation himself, then worked with a team on other aspects. "The film stands alone as a short, but with the team's love for the old Saturday morning cartoons they've set up the story as a pilot, dreaming that one day Speedy could unfold into an animated series." My Cannes 2020 At-Home Experience: Catching Up with Terrific Films

Cannes At-Home

Even without Cannes this year, we Cannes still have our own festival anyway. Even without film festivals, we can still experience the excitement of cinema watching films at home. The 2020 Cannes Film Festival was supposed to take place from May 12th to May 23rd, and this would've been my 11th year attending. But the festival has "postponed", although it seems like it's cancelled for 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. They decided not to host a virtual festival and instead are considering some kind of online offering and/or a partnership with another festival in the fall. So what else is there to do during these 11 days in May? Watch more films anyway! I wouldn't want to be anywhere else besides in Cannes anyway, so in the spirit of the festival, I decided to host my own version at home and watched 15 extraordinary films over the last 11 days. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Spelling the Dream' Doc About Spelling Champions

Spelling the Dream Doc Trailer

"I've studied all the words I can, now it's just up to the word I get." Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for a new documentary called Spelling the Dream, made by filmmaker Sam Rega. This hasn't premiered at any film festivals anywhere, but will be available to watch Netflix in just a few weeks. An Indian-American competitor has won the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee for the past 12 years straight, making the trend one of the longest in sports history. Spelling the Dream chronicles the ups and downs of four Indian-American students as they compete to realize their dream of winning the iconic tournament. Formerly titled Breaking the Bee, the compelling doc film explores the reasons behind this incredible winning streak and what it means for the Indian-American community. Seems a bit like Hoop Dreams, but for the spelling bee. ›››

Watch: Lonely Robot Short 'This Time Away' Starring Timothy Spall

This Time Away Short Film

"You can stay. For now." Make a short film about a robot, and we'll pretty much always feature it. Because everyone loves robots! Especially when they're nice and friendly and helpful. And not mean, no thank you, nice robots only. This Time Away is an excellent sci-fi / robo short film made by London-based filmmaker Magali Barbe that originally premiered at festivals in 2019. It's now available to watch online and I highly recommend giving this a quick 15 minutes of your time to enjoy. The short is about a robot companion who helps brighten up the life of an old man. Nigel is an elderly man living as a recluse, haunted by his past and the memory of the family he once had… until an unexpected visitor arrives and disrupts his lonely routine. Starring Timothy Spall as Nigel, and Jessica Ellerby as Louise. There's a gorgeous score composed by Azel Phara that adds a dash of melancholy to the film, too. This reminds me a lot of Robot & Frank, which has a similar concept at the start (until they begin pulling off a heist with that robot). View the short below. ›››

First Trailer for Australian Romance 'Dirt Music' with Kelly MacDonald

Dirt Music Trailer

"I already felt like a ghost… Figured why not become one." Universal Pictures Australia has released the first official trailer for a heart-wrenching romantic drama titled Dirt Music, the latest film from Australian filmmaker Gregor Jordan (of Buffalo Soldiers, Ned Kelly, The Informers, Unthinkable). Adapted from the novel by Tim Winton, the stunning landscape of Western Australia is the backdrop for an impassioned tale of love and grief. Talented Aussie actress Kelly MacDonald stars as Georgie, who is stuck in an unhappy relationship with a local fisherman. She goes off on a journey of self-discovery and meets a former musician named Lu Fox, played by Garret Hedlund. The film also stars David Wenham, Aaron Pedersen, Dan Wyllie, Chris Haywood, and Ava Caryofyllis. This actually looks way better than the average romance, not only with some gorgeous cinematography, but heartfelt performances and a tragic but meaningful story. ›››

New Trailer for Australian Pitch-Black Comedy 'Below' with Ryan Corr

Below Trailer

"Ready the cage." Madman Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an Australian pitch-black comedy titled Below, made by a Norwegian-born Iranian-Australian filmmaker named Maziar Lahooti. In a near-future, darknet grifter Dougie is recruited to work security at a refugee detention centre. There, he is drawn into an underground operation blackmailing detainees to fight for profit for in a "underground fight club". When tragedy strikes courageous fighter Azad, Dougie surprisingly finds his hitherto dormant conscience and takes a stand. This stars Ryan Corr, Anthony LaPaglia, Phoenix Raei, Alison Whyte, Robert Rabiah, Morgana O'Reilly, and Zenia Star. "Below isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty as it tackles hard issues, resulting in a deliberately provocative dare of a film that’s bound to get audiences talking." It looks like some seriously ballsy satire. Not sure if it'll be any good, but I'm still curious. Get your first look below. ›››

Teaser Trailer for Pixar's New Sparkshort 'Out' Streaming on Disney+

Out Short Film

"Just look them in the eyes and say, 'Mom, Dad…'" Disney+ has revealed a teaser trailer for a new short film from Pixar titled Out, part of their "experimental storytelling" series called "SparkShorts". We featured a number of these shorts last year before they stopped putting them online so they could instead debut them all on Disney+ as one of their streaming offers. Out is a 9-minute short about a gay man named Greg, who hasn't yet come out to his parents. They unexpectedly show up at his home just before he's about to move, and his cute dog Jim helps encourage him to tell them the truth. With the voice of Kyle McDaniel as Greg. Directed by Steven Hunter, who works in the animation department. The short is already available to watch on Disney+ now, quietly released last week. There's a lovely painterly style that's also quite unique for Pixar. ›››

Watch: Psychedelic Animated Short Film 'Coyote' by Lorenz Wunderle

Coyote Short Film

Don't let grief get the best of you, it can consume good people. This radical animated short definitely isn't for kids. Coyote is an animated short made by the Swiss filmmaker Lorenz Wunderle and the animation studio YK Animation based in Bern. The film's story is about a coyote tormented by fear, anger, and grief after his entire family is killed by wolves. "Besides grief and delusion, evil takes up more and more space." Lorenz explains he was inspired "by so much TV animation, movies or comics from my past", mainly Ghost in the Shell, when he first realized animation could also be violent and not only for kids. Not everyone will enjoy this short, but that doesn't matter, it's a story he wants to tell in this way. And we're happy to feature shorts that are this ambitious and impressive - in style and substance. Just watch out - it's gory and violent. ›››

Children's Creature Feature Comedy 'Four Kids and It' Official Trailer

Four Kids and It Trailer

"There's always consequences." Lionsgate has released the official US trailer for a UK comedy titled Four Kids and It, a fun-for-the-whole-family creature feature adapted from the book by Jacqueline Wilson. This already opened in the UK in April, and debuts in the US in June. A group of kids on holiday in Cornwall meet a magical creature on the beach with the power to grant wishes. Can they learn to control the magic before something dreadful happens? Starring Paula Patton, Matthew Goode, Ashley Aufderheide, Billy Jenkins, Ellie-Mae Siame, Caroline Sheen, with Russell Brand and (yes believe it) Michael Caine as "It". Crazy. This looks like a Disney Channel remake of E.T. in the UK, which might still be fun to watch. Everything about this looks so kooky and delightfully strange. Plus, who doesn't want magic powers? ›››

What Might the Future Look Like? Official Trailer for '2040' Doc Film

2040 Trailer

"Everywhere you look, you will see incredible reasons for hope." Together Films has unveiled an official US trailer for a documentary titled 2040, made by filmmaker Damon Gameau (of the doc That Sugar Film previously). It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year. Motivated by his 4-year-old daughter and concern for the planet she will inherit, Gameau embarks on a global journey to discover what the future of the planet could look like by the year 2040 if we embraced the best solutions already available to us, and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream. Guided by the voices of 100 child interviewees aged 6 to 11 who describe the kind of world they would like to see by the year 2040, Damon draws on the best minds from around the world across climate, economics, technology, civil society, education, agriculture to conjure a positive portrait of what "could be", instead of the dystopian future we are so often presented. This seems like a remarkably fascinating and refreshingly optimistic look at the future and how we can save our planet. ›››

First Trailer for Indie Sex Comedy 'Mope' Set in the Wild World of Porn

Mope Trailer

"You'll do anything I ask?" Quiver has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Mope, which first premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. It also played at the Cinepocalypse, Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival, and Fantasy Filmfest in Germany last year. Based on a true crime story by Michael Louis Albo, the film is a dark comedy about the multibillion-dollar world of pornography, the term "mope" refers to a low-level, wannabe porn actor. In this tragic true story, Stephen and Herbert, respectively known by their porn alter egos Steve Driver and Tom Dong, were two such mopes—real-life best friends attempting to live the impossible dream. This all looks as crazy and twisted and wacky as it sounds. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Steve and Kelly Sry as Tom, with David Arquette, Max Adler, Tonya Cornelisse, Clayton Rohner, Brian Huskey, and Peggy Dunne. This seems totally ridiculous, but ridiculous in a good way. ›››

New Trailer for Animated 'Marona's Fantastic Tale' About a Stray Dog

Marona's Fantastic Tale Trailer

"I fell in love with my human's scent." GKids has unveiled the new official US trailer for the indie animated film titled Marona's Fantastic Tale, made by Romanian filmmaker Anca Damian (A Very Unsettled Summer, Moon Hotel Kabul) with graphic design by Brecht Evens. This French feature premiered at the Annecy Film Festival last year (here's the first trailer), and is finally getting a virtual release this summer. The film is about a little dog who, at the end of her life, looks back on her life and tells the story of her various owners. She has loved them all unconditionally, but of course life hasn't always been easy. The film is beautiful not only because it's told from the perspective of a dog, but also due to the strange, entrancing, imaginative animation style that mixes techniques to create something unique. Featuring the voice of Lizzie Brocheré as Marona. It's a rather lovely one-of-a-kind film that I'll recommend to intrepid fans of cinema. ›››

Together, they shared their bee wisdom and even removed a hive, all caught on film. Described as "an inspiring and educational short film" about bees and the challenges bee keepers face trying to make sure bees stay healthy and happy in their natural environments. Grab a Drink - Teaser Trailer for 'Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets' Film

Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets Doc Trailer

As the sun went down and the music did play… Utopia has debuted the first teaser trailer for a documentary film called Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets, the latest feature from the Ross Brothers. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and also stopped by the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. The documentary follows customers and staff at a dive bar in Las Vegas known as the "Roaring 20s" on their very last day in business. But it's not exactly that. The filmmakers brought the same customers and staff to another bar in New Orleans to film this, and asked them to act like themselves in the same way they did for real in the real bar. "Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets is a mosaic of disparate lives, teetering between dignity and debauchery, reckoning with the past as they face an uncertain future, and singing as their ship goes down." With the help of some alcohol. A strange teaser, but it's a way stand out from the crowd with something so funky and fun. ›››
