Watch: A Man & Dog Head to the Woods in 'Oscar's Bell' Horror Short

Oscar's Bell Short Film

When things start getting frightening, there's nothing better than having a dog by your side to scare away the evil. Oscar's Bell is a new dialogue-free horror short film made by UK-based filmmaker Chris Cronin (also of the short films Balcony, Unkillable, and Sophie's Fortune). Paul Bullion (from "Peaky Blinders") stars as Duncan, who heads out on his weekly camping trip into the wilderness with his dog Oscar. However, when Duncan looks out into the woods, something else looks back. Also co-starring the dog Anti as Oscar. "Our goal was to create a longer film, really going back to the basics of the scary ghost story," they explain about making this. "During the writing we just kept asking ourselves, 'what would make this even worse for Duncan?', looking to heighten the horror until we had an ending we really felt delivered." It definitely does. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Seahorse: The Dad Who Gave Birth' Documentary

Seahorse: The Dad Who Gave Birth

"It's a scary, daunting prospect… You just worry for your child." 1091 Media has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Seahorse: The Dad Who Gave Birth, which will be available to watch on VOD in June this year. Director Jeanie Finlay charts a transgender man's path to parenthood after he decides to carry his child himself. The pregnancy prompts an unexpected and profound reckoning with conventions of masculinity, self-definition and biology. The title is a reference to seahorses, obviously enough, because the male of the species carries the eggs deposited by the female in his pouch until they're ready to be released. This film seems like a bit of a shock at first, but when you get a look at the footage, it seems to be built upon a great deal of compassion and understanding. Which is something we do need more of in the world anyway. ›››

Wacky Trailer for Experimental Love Story 'She's Allergic To Cats' Film

She's Allergic To Cats Trailer

"I can train you to be a true groomer." Whoaaaaa what is this?! An official trailer has arrived online for a film titled She's Allergic To Cats, a strange, experimental, fever dream love story that has been lost since 2016. This originally premiered back in 2016 at the Fantasia Film Festival (read the story about that wild premiere) but hasn't shown up anywhere since. Until now. It's getting a VOD release (on iTunes/Amazon) next month, almost four years after its initial debut. The film is about a dog groomer in LA who pursues the woman of his dreams. It "has something for everyone. From cats taking on the roles from Carrie, dogs being bathed in slow-motion, beats to bop to, and a loveable underdog to root for." And it sounds / looks wacky. "Boundaries between reality, fantasy, art, romantic-comedy and horror collide in an explosion of distorted video art and psychological insanity." Starring Mike Pinkney & Sonja Kinski, with Veronika Dash & Flula Borg. There's no other way to describe it, you just have to watch and see this footage yourself. Enjoy. ›››

Official Trailer for 'To the Stars' Starring Kara Hayward & Liana Liberato

To the Stars Trailer

"I don't care if people like me." The first official trailer has debuted for a small town indie drama titled To the Stars, which initially premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It also won the Festival Director's Award at the Cinetopia Film Festival last year. Originally in B&W, now being shown in color, the film is a "coming-of-age tale, a story about finding power and comfort in one’s own skin" set in 1960s Oklahoma. Under small town scrutiny, a withdrawn farmer's daughter forges an intimate friendship with a worldly but reckless new girl. To the Stars co-stars Kara Hayward and Liana Liberato, along with Jordana Spiro, Shea Whigham, Malin Akerman, Tony Hale, and Adelaide Clemens. Featuring cinematography by Andrew Reed (also of Land Ho!, Gemini). This picked up great reviews at Sundance and other fests, and seems like a worthy drama with some style and substance to offer. Not sure why they dropped B&W though. ›››

Watch: Ben Berman's Short Film 'The Follow-Up' Made in Quarantine

The Follow-Up Short Film

"Keep your head up, keep your heart open." Humans crave connection. We need to talk, and hear from each other, converse, and interact. How do you do that if you're a filmmaker with no friends, stuck at home? Let's ask Benjamin Berman: "I made a new film! The first film made completely in quarantine??? Possibly. Get yourself a little human connection and check out The Follow-Up." Berman made a doc film that premiered last year called The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, and this is kind of / sort of his follow-up. As much as this might seem to be a film about connection during quarantine, beneath the surface it seems to be about how we're so desperate to connect we will pay excessive amounts of money to have washed up celebs record videos to make us feel better. Which really does make this a good follow-up to his doc. Check this out below. ›››

Impressive Trailer for 35mm Dystopian Sci-Fi Western 'The Archivist'

The Archivist Trailer

"You might wanna take a few steps back." Get a load of this! The Archivist is a "spaghetti western meets dystopian sci-fi" throwback made by filmmaker Eric Hand, and we have an official trailer for it that looks awesome. In the year 2070, Caulder Benson is a government archivist officer charged by an increasingly invasive and restrictive government to destroy all elements and remnants of his society's self-indulgent and avaricious past. Featuring "strong influences from Sergio Leone, Roger Corman, Monte Hellman films and a soundtrack inspired by Ennio Morricone and 70's rock." The film was shot on 35mm Technsicope, with the same cameras as The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Starring Eric Hand, Dale Shumate, Jennifer Giles, & Butch Thompson. It actually seems like this was made in the 70s, which isn't easy to pull off. Take a look. ›››

David Thewlis in First Intl. Trailer for Atom Egoyan's 'Guest of Honour'

Guest of Honour Trailer

"All I want to know, is if that's the truth?" Cine Maldito in Spain has unveiled an official trailer for the indie drama titled Guest of Honour, the latest feature made by Egyptian-Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan. This originally premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals last fall, and played at numerous other festivals last year. It was originally set to open in April in Europe, but will likely be held until cinemas start re-opening. The film follows a father and daughter in Canada, as they attempt to unravel their complicated histories and intertwined secrets. Veronica wants to remain in jail for a sexual assault she knows she's been wrongfully imprisoned for. Both her and her father, Jim, find themselves acting out of the bounds of good behavior as the past haunts them. Starring David Thewlis and Laysla De Oliveira as Jim and Veronica, along with Luke Wilson, Rossif Sutherland, Arsinée Khanjian, and Alexandre Bourgeois. I caught this in Venice last year (my review) and it's intriguing, a sobering, sad story about how deceptive we all are. ›››

Watch: Jonny Look's Comedy Short Tries to Communicate with Plants

Plants Short Film

"My department was tasked with coaxing them into conversation with humankind. Our primary method is: torture." If plants are alive, can we communicate with them? That's the question at the core of this funky, funny short film. The official title of the short is Assholes, which might be a good title, but it's not an easy one to mention without someone raising an eye-brow at it. From up-and-coming filmmaker Jonny Look, the mockumentary short stars Linas Phillips as Dr. Albert, a scientist who is testing out various methods of torture in hopes of getting houseplants to respond and communicate with humans. The small cast also includes Kyle Mizuno, Will Hines, Ashleigh Hairston, and Sam Buchanan. As totally wacky as this entire short is, it's a hilariously well-made film that explores some household humor that hasn't been fully mined yet. Plants do have consciousness, of course! Perhaps we can try to treat them better after all of this? ›››

Teaser Trailer for Doggie Doc Film 'Stray' About Stray Dogs in Istanbul

Stray Doc Trailer

"See the world through their eyes." Dogwoof has debuted a short teaser trailer for yet another new doggie documentary, this one titled simply Stray. The film looks a bit like a spiritual sequel or double feature with Kedi, this time about stray dogs on the streets of Istanbul (while Kedi is about the iconic cats of Istanbul). In Stray, a trio of canine outcasts roam the streets of Istanbul. Through their eyes and ears, we are shown an intimate portrait of the life of a city and its people. This was set to premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. A "memorable journey that won't be easy to shake, the film allows its soulful canine protagonist to command the screen, and, in the process, become visible in a region where so many [other] individuals are forced to remain unseen." "Two powerful stories that show just how far family can take you." Disneynature has debuted one trailer for two of their upcoming nature documentaries: Elephant and Dolphin Reef. Usually they release a new Disneynature movie in theaters (and IMAX) once a year in April, but now they're releasing two right away. By now, everyone knows what to expect with these nature docs. Elephant, narrated by Meghan Markle, follows an African elephant named Shani and her son Joao as their heard make an epic journey across the Kalashnikov Desert. Dolphin Reef, narrated by Natalie Portman, follows Echo, a bottlenose dolphin who can't quite decide if it's time to grow up and take on new responsibilities – or give in to his silly side and just have fun. Watch: 'There's Something in the Water' Short Doc About a Texas Lake

There's Something in the Water Short

"There's two kinds of lakes in the South: them that's got Giant Salvinia and them that's about to have Giant Salvinia." What lurks in the inland waters of Texas? An annoying invasive floating fern called Giant Salvinia that is covering the lake. There's Something in the Water is an animated short documentary, only 8 minutes long to watch, examining what's going on with Caddo Lake, the only natural lake in Texas. The short is built around interviews with people who live and work on the lake discussing Giant Salvinia. With the voices of Rick Michaels, Laura-Ashley Overdyke, Tim Bister, Billy Carter, Laura Speight, Howard Leftwich, Henry "Peanut" Lewis, Kizzie M. Hicks, and Jay Webb. Not only is this a fascinating doc about a crazy environmental debacle, but this short has some really funky, fun animation. I also quite like the mix of real footage with animated elements. Things get rough when the gang shows up for their missing drugs. Starring Sami Bouajila and Samy Seghir, with Carole Weyers, Eriq Ebouaney, Sofia Lesaffre, and Eric Kabongo. Review: 'Blow the Man Down' – Easter Cove and Its Darkest Secrets

Blow the Man Down Review

There is always something extra inviting when it comes to small villages located by the sea. Let's take one from Practical Magic. It makes you want to go there, meet all the people, it makes you feel free and happy. But it's the opposite feeling in Easter Cove, Maine presented in indie noir, Blow the Man Down. Directed and written by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, the film tells the story of Connolly sisters - Priscilla (Sophie Lowe), and Mary Beth (Morgan Saylor). After their mother's passing, the sisters have to figure out the way to save the house from bankruptcy and keep up with their store that Mary Margaret left them. Unfortunately, nothing goes as planned. After a run-in with a dangerous man (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Mary Beth, with the help of Priscilla, tries to cover up his grim murder. Afterwards, both attempt to come back to their new normal; still, it's not easy, especially with the police asking questions and their mother's friends snooping around. One of them, Enid (Margo Martindale), is particularly interested in the sisters. ›››

Official Trailer for Documentary 'Bias' About the Toxic Effects of Bias

Bias Doc Trailer

"We should ask ourselves: is that useful in the modern world?" 1091 Media has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary titled Bias, that is of course about bias, and the toxic effects of "unconscious bias" (on society and the world and humanity). This first premiered at a festival a few years ago, and is finally getting a release on VOD next month. Bias challenges us to confront our hidden biases and understand what we risk when we follow our gut. Through exposing her own biases, award-winning documentary filmmaker Robin Hauser (Code: Debugging the Gender Gap) highlights the nature of implicit bias, the grip it holds on our social and professional lives, and what it will take to induce change. This sounds like a fascinating doc that couldn't be more important for today's world. Alas, I doubt it will be seen by as many people as it should be. ›››

Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an action comedy called Coffee & Kareem, the latest movie from Canadian filmmaker Michael Dowse (Fubar, Goon, What If, Stuber). Twelve-year-old Kareem Manning hires a criminal to scare his mom's new boyfriend – police officer James Coffee – but it backfires, forcing Coffee and Kareem to team up in order to save themselves from Detroit's most ruthless drug kingpin. This stars Ed Helms and Taraji P. Henson, also joined by Betty Gilpin, RonReaco Lee, Andrew Bachelor (King Bach) and David Alan Grier. This looks painfully campy and so unoriginal it's hard to even laugh at any of the humor, especially from the kid. But maybe I'm really not the target audience for this kind of ridiculous comedy. Does it look that funny? ›››

Mickey Rourke & Bai Ling in Trailer for Roman War Epic 'The Legion'

The Legion Trailer

"Without fear, we are free!" Saban Films has unveiled an official trailer for the war film The Legion, from Spanish producer / director José Magán. Mickey Rourke and Bai Ling star in this epic tale of courage and heroism in a time of war. Set during the Roman–Parthian Wars, the film is about a Roman legion stuck in the snowy mountains of Armenia. Their only hope for survival is Noreno, a half-Roman soldier, who is entrusted with the impossible mission of crossing the deadly terrain to seek help for his men and turn the tide of the battle. Also starring Lee Partridge as Noreno, plus Joaquim de Almeida, Vladimir Kulich, Max Matveev, Bosco Hogan, Tristan McConnell, and Ciaran O'Grady. This looks a bit too bland, an excessive focus on one-on-one fights, and mostly people running through the wilderness. Still might be cool. ›››

Josh Duhamel & Leslie Bibb in Trailer for 'The Lost Husband' Romance

The Lost Husband Trailer

"This kind of pain and loss, it cracks you open… But we are made of magic and resilience, Libby." Quiver Distr. has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled The Lost Husband, a feature film adapted from the novel of the same name by Katherine Center. Trying to put her life back together after the death of her husband, Libby and her children move to her estranged aunt's goat farm in central Texas. There she falls in with a "gruff farm manager with a tragic past" and, of course, starts to enjoy the country life. Leslie Bibb stars, along with Josh Duhamel, and also Sharon Lawrence, Kevin Alejandro, Georgia King, Carly Pope, Herizen F. Guardiola, Nora Dunn, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. This looks exactly like the country livin', charming, sweet farm romance you'd expect it to look like, which is a good thing this time. ›››

Watch: A Haunted House Short Film 'Place' Directed by Jason Gudasz

Place Short Film

"There's faces here, Greg. Faces live here… I see them when I close my eyes. They don't like us, Greg." It's always nice to move into a new home. Isn't it? Unless that new place is haunted. Place is a new short film from writer / director Jason Gudasz, and after premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, it's now available to watch in full online. A young woman moves into a new house with her boyfriend and daughter. However, the spirits within the house plan to make their lives a living hell. Place stars Emily Green, Nick Hurley, and Stella Edwards. It's not really that scary, more unsettling, but it is still worth a watch. There's some clever filmmaking tricks in this, and slick cinematography. It reminds me a bit of the haunted house horror Girl on the Third Floor, and also Donnie Darko (all the mirror scenes). Watch below. ›››

Christopher Nolan Reminds Us to Make Sure Movie Theaters Live On

Cinema

"The single biggest threat to man's continued dominance on the planet is the virus." A quote from Nobel laureate Joshua Lederberg, Ph.D, that is shown at the beginning of Outbreak. In just a few months, followed by a few weeks of frantic decision making, the entire world has been upended by a virus. We still don't know when things will get back to "normal", or if they'll ever get back to normal, but for the time being everything is changing before our eyes and there's nothing we can do besides wait and see. Stay at home and stay safe. Ride out the storm and wait for sunny skies after it's all over. The biggest change affecting this website, and every reader, is that cinemas worldwide have shut their doors. Most countries have passed emergency laws requiring all entertainment venues, including all cinemas, to close down until further notice. Thankfully we have digital libraries at our fingertips, but I still miss the cinema. I wish I could still see films in theaters… ›››

This is actually made by Bron, an animation studio based in Vancouver. It's adapted from Lois Lowry's novel of the same name about a group of kids who get into all kinds of trouble. Watch: French Stop-Motion 'Raymonde or the Vertical Escape' Short

Raymonde or the Vertical Escape Short Film

"And also, I want the vastness of the sky." Here is a unique stop-motion animated film to enjoy when you have a few extra minutes. Raymonde or the Vertical Escape is an animated short by French filmmaker Sarah Van den Boom, co-founder of Papy3D Productions in Paris. In a remote farm, Raymonde (an owl) lives a solitary life. She takes care of her garden, raises rabbits, but loneliness starts to weigh on her. She asks herself questions about the meaning of things, about God, about her tardy virginity. Now, Raymonde feels an immense desire to live rising within her… The story "uses comedy as a means to explore themes of social acceptance, isolation, and sensuality." This was nominated for Best Animated Short in France's César Awards last year, and played on the festival circuit throughout most of last year, too. Featuring Yolande Moreau as the voice of Raymonde. The character design for this is particularly impressive, along with the deeply honest and intimate storytelling. View the full short below. (Click the CC button for subtitle options.) ›››

Rob Corddry & Alicia Silverstone in Trailer for RomCom 'Bad Therapy'

Bad Therapy Trailer

"Do you want to know the secret to a divorce…?" "Yes, yes I do." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Bad Therapy, arriving straight-to-VOD coming up in April. Set in Los Angeles, the film is about a struggling married couple who decide to see a marriage counselor named Judy Small. But it turns out this seemingly competent therapist is more than meets the eye, when her own conflicting impulses are brought to light through this couple's problems. Sounds like yet another perfectly cliche Los Angeles film. Alicia Silverstone & Rob Corddry star as the couple, with Michaela Watkins as the therapist, and a cast including Anna Pniowsky, Aisha Tyler, Sarah Shahi, Haley Joel Osment, Dichen Lachman, Sunkrish Bala, and Ginger Gonzaga. Not sure if anyone needs this kind of therapy. ›››

Official Trailer for Wacky Desert Adventure 'Gold Dust' by David Wall

Gold Dust Trailer

"Whoever lost this money is gunna come looking for it." High Octane has unveiled an official trailer for a "rollicking western adventure for the whole family" called Gold Dust, the latest feature written & directed by (and starring) David Wall. First UK Trailer for Trapped Thriller 'Hippopotamus' with Ingvild Deila

Hippopotamus Trailer

"How many others, Tom?" The first official UK trailer has debuted for a low-budget contained thriller titled Hippopotamus, the feature directorial debut of a young British filmmaker named Edward A. Palmer (aka Ed Palmer), giving us something akin to Saw or 10 Cloverfield Lane. Norwegian actress Ingvild Deila stars as Ruby, a girl who has been kidnapped, but her kidnapper doesn’t want a ransom. He wants her to fall in love with him. Of course he does. The amazing DP Roger Deakins described the film as "mesmerizing" after seeing it at the Plymouth Film Festival. Hippopotamus was shot while Edward was still at university for a mere £5,000, then it toured to over 20 festivals. It will be releasing in the UK coming up soon (straight to VOD it seems) though there's still no US date yet. This looks quite good, I'm curious to see where it leads to. ›››

Festival Promo Trailer for 'Before the Fire' Starring Jenna Lyng Adams

Before the Fire Trailer

"What's the plan? You always have a plan…" An official trailer has debuted online for an indie drama titled Before the Fire, formerly called The Great Silence, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Charlie Buhler. This just premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival and is still looking for distribution. The plot couldn't be more coincidental with what's happening in the world right now. Which might be why they're releasing this trailer. When a global pandemic forces a TV actress to escape to her rural hometown, an intruder from her past proves as dangerous as the encroaching virus. "The viruses in the present and of her past both lurk around." Sounds extra frightening. Before the Fire stars Jenna Lyng Adams, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, as Ava, plus Jackson Davis, Ryan Vigilant, Charlie Buhler, and Tim Driscoll. Looks exactly like what you'd expect - a woman trying to outrun all the abusive men around her. ›››

Watch: Animated Experimental Dark Comedy Short Film 'Solipsism'

Solipsism Short Film

Can you really know all of yourself? Another entrancing animated short film to enjoy and to contemplate. Solipsism is an experimental dark comedy animated short made by animator Jonathan Djob Nkondo along with artist / illustrator / filmmaker Tuna Bora, based on her pre-existing illustrations. The title is a reference to the philosophical concept of solipsism: "the theory that only the self exists, or can be proved to exist." It's about a girl trying to make sense of herself. "The film tells the tale of a young girl who gets lost inside the world around her–or rather, inside her own head–with a clear design that starts to crumble as the protagonist stumbles through an unidentified landscape." Personally, I always love these strange animated films with cool visuals that explore intriguing ideas and actually have something to say. Check it out below. ›››
