Venice 2019: Todd Phillips' Demented 'Joker' Movie Doesn't Hold Back

Joker Movie Review

There will be before Joker. And there will be after Joker. Nothing will be the same after, we'll be living in a whole new world. That's not even hyperbole, just the truth. I don't know if the world is ready for this movie. Or maybe it is? We'll find out soon enough. There's no stopping it now. I can't believe it exists. But it does, and it's coming. And no matter if we're ready or not, it's going to make an impact. Director Todd Phillips' new take on the origin of the DC Comics villain known as "The Joker" just premiered at the Venice Film Festival and oh my goodness, it is crazy. It is GNARLY. It is audacious. It doesn't hold back. It's subversive, provocative, dark, demented, twisted, and terrifying. Joker will likely end up being one of the most divisive movies of the decade, with some people hating it with a passion, others heralding it as a bold masterpiece. ›››

Miss Virginia Trailer

"You cannot, you will not, deny our children their right to learn." Vertical Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a drama titled Miss Virginia, which is hitting theaters in October this year. The film is based on a true story, about a struggling inner-city mother named Miss Virginia who sacrifices everything to give her son a good education. Unwilling to allow her son to stay in a dangerous school, so she decides to launch a grassroots political movement that could save his future - and thousands like him - by helping him get access to private schools. Uzo Aduba (from "Orange Is the New Black") stars, with Matthew Modine, Vanessa Williams, Adina Porter, Aunjanue Ellis, Amirah Vann, Samantha Sloyan, Nadji Jeter, Kimberly Hebert Gregory, and April Grace. Venice 2019: Haifaa Al-Mansour's 'The Perfect Candidate' is Inspiring

The Perfect Candidate Review

I'm happiest when I watch a great film. Not just a good one, but a really great one. Something that fills me with energy, that reminds me this is why I love going to film festivals. And I'm happy to report that the new film from Saudi Arabian filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour (director of Wadjda, Mary Shelley, and Nappily Ever After previously), titled The Perfect Candidate, is indeed an outstanding film. After spending some time in Hollywood making a few films, Al-Mansour returns to her roots in Saudi Arabia to tells this story of a young woman in the country who discovers her voice. It's an inspiring & uplifting film that moves briskly and gives us a good story to follow. No matter where you're from, you can connect with and enjoy this film. ›››

First Trailer for Surreal Turkish Horror 'The Antenna' Playing at TIFF

The Antenna Trailer

"Any breaches of the order, are hastily being eliminated." Our friends at Bloody-Disgusting have debuted an official promo trailer for an indie horror-thriller film premiering at the Toronto Film Festival titled The Antenna. This surreal thriller is about a dystopian Turkey, where the Government begins installing new networks throughout the country to monitor people. The installation goes wrong in a crumbling apartment complex and Mehmet, the building's super, will then have to confront the evil entity behind the inexplicable transmissions that threaten the residents. Starring Ihsan Önal as Mehmet, Gül Arici, Levent Ünsal, Isil Zeynep, Murat Saglam, Elif Çakman, Mert Toprak Yadigar, Eda Özel, and Enis Yildiz. This looks like some very Cronenberg-ian, Videodrome-esque paranoia with tons of cool imagery. Give this one a look. ›››

Ava Michelle is a Tall Girl in Official Trailer for Netflix's Film 'Tall Girl'

Tall Girl Trailer

"Face your fears, Jodi." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a drama titled Tall Girl, which is indeed about a tall girl. What an original name for this. Ava Michelle stars as Jodi, a girl in high school who is 73 inches tall - 6', 1". She's always been uncomfortable with it. After slouching her way through life for 16 years and being made fun of by classmates, Jodi meets Stig, a seemingly perfect Swedish foreign exchange student who's even taller than she is. Jodi's new crush turns her world upside down and throws her into a surprising love triangle. The cast includes Luke Eisner, Griffin Gluck, Sabrina Carpenter, Paris Berelc, Steve Zahn, Angela Kinsey, and Anjelika Washington. At first glance, this doesn't look any good - so campy. ›››

Linda Hamilton & Natalia Reyes in Full 'Terminator: Dark Fate' Trailer

Terminator: Dark Fate Trailer

"If you don't make it, everybody dies!" Paramount has revealed a new full-length trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate, the sixth Terminator movie that brings us all the way back to the first two James Cameron movies. This one throws away those other sequels and gives us an actual direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, starting up the day after Judgement Day. Badass actress Linda Hamilton returns as the first Sarah Connor, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is also back again, along with Edward Furlong as the original John Connor. Cameron is producing and is credited on the story. The cast includes Mackenzie Davis, Brett Azar as the new T-800, along with Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna, Diego Boneta, Alicia Borrachero, Steven Cree, Tábata Cerezo, and Björn Freiberg. This definitely looks like it has some awesome action, but I'm not sure if the rest of it will hold up. Almost too much going on in here. Fire it up. ›››

Venice 2019: James Gray Goes on a Trip into Deep Space in 'Ad Astra'

Ad Astra Review

What is out there? What is waiting for us in the stars? James Gray's long-awaited sci-fi adventure Ad Astra has finally arrived. This time Gray takes us out into deep space on a journey with an astronaut named Roy McBride, set in the near future when we've colonized the Moon and Mars but have only just started to reach the edges of our own solar system. McBride is sent on a mission to find his missing father, hoping to figure out what's causing electrical storms wreaking havoc on Earth. This lonely, slow burn space movie is an awe-inspiring, magnificent journey into the stars. As a big time space geek, it ticks every last box. It's sensational to watch, meticulously realized and meditative, more melancholic than exciting but still a stellar experience. ›››

Ema Trailer

"I'm going to make sure you never forget what he told you." The Match Factory unveiled the first official promo trailer for Ema, the latest film from acclaimed, award-winning Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (of Post Mortem, No!, The Club, Neruda, Jackie). This is premiering at the Venice Film Festival this week, and then will hit the Toronto Film Festival next. Mariana Di Girolamo stars as Ema, a reggaeton dancer who "sets out on an odyssey of personal liberation" in the aftermath of an adoption that goes awry as their household falls apart. Also starring Gael García Bernal, Paola Giannini, and Santiago Cabrera. The first poster for this is also stunning - such attention-grabbing imagery! And this trailer is splendid, setting the tone and introducing this colorful story. I'm a big fan of Larrain and can't wait to see this in Venice soon. ›››

New Official US Trailer for Wonderful 'Varda by Agnès' Documentary

Varda by Agnès US Trailer

"Three words are important to me: inspiration, creation, sharing." Janus Films has debuted a new official US trailer for the wonderful, inspiring cinema documentary Varda by Agnès - the final film made by the iconic / the legendary Agnès Varda before she passed away earlier this year. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year to rave reviews (here's my own), and is being released as a feature doc along with a retrospective of all her films. An "unpredictable" doc from a fascinating storyteller, Varda by Agnès sheds light on her experience as a director, bringing a personal insight to what she calls "cine-writing," traveling from Rue Daguerre in Paris to Los Angeles and Beijing. It's a lovely journey through her entire life/career, examining many of her films with conversations discussing her life as a storyteller. I said in my review: "it's utterly delightful and endlessly inspiring to listen to her talk about cinema and to tell stories about her life." ›››

Fun Trailer for 'Britt-Marie Was Here' Adaptation with Pernilla August

Britt-Marie Was Here Trailer

"The kids have no confidence in me. I know nothing about soccer." Cohen Media Group has released the official US trailer for a Swedish drama called Britt-Marie Was Here, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Fredrik Backman ("A Man Called Ove"). This premiered at the Göteborg Film Festival earlier this year. Directed by Swedish actress / filmmaker Tuva Novotny, the film tells the story of a woman who leaves her husband after 40 years to find some new meaning in life. Backman's "particular brand of witty humor and inspiring themes of self-discovery have effectively been captured," with a stand-out lead performance by Pernilla August in the main role. It also stars Peter Haber, Malin Levanon, Vera Vitali, Olle Sarri, Mahmut Suvakci, Lancelot Ncube, and Anders Mossling. This looks fun! Even if you're not someone who is leaving their marriage after 40 years, there's still some charming entertainment to be found in here. ›››

Anthony Hopkins & Jonathan Pryce in First Trailer for 'The Two Popes'

The Two Popes Trailer

"You know the hardest thing is to listen…" Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the film The Two Popes, not to be confused with the TV series "The New Pope" (or "The Young Pope"). This is a fictionalized version of the story of the latest pope to leave before this latest one. Behind Vatican walls, the traditionalist Pope Benedict and the reformist future Pope Francis must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church. Jonathan Pryce plays Cardinal Bergoglio, who requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict, played by Anthony Hopkins. Also starring Juan Minujín, Sidney Cole, Thomas D Williams, Federico Torre, and Pablo Trimarchi. This looks way better than I was expecting, but then again this is Fernando Meirelles and I've enjoyed pretty much every single film he has made so far. It's premiering at the Toronto Film Festival before landing on Netflix in December this year. Check it out below. ›››

Venice 2019: 'Marriage Story' is One of Noah Baumbach's Finest Films

Marriage Story

"I can't think of anything lonelier than spending the rest of my life with someone I can't talk to, or worse, someone I can't be silent with." (–Mary Ann Shaffer, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society") That feeling of being high on cinema is the feeling I had coming out of Marriage Story at the Venice Film Festival. Bliss. Goddamn I am totally floored by this film. Noah Baumbach has been making beautifully honest stories about families for years, but this one is extra special. It definitely does seem a bit personal, something he has been through himself, but he is able to transfer this honesty to the big screen and tell us an emotional story, show us how love remains, even after a divorce. Marriage Story is actually a Divorce Story, but instead of calling it that Baumbach made "a love story that reveals itself within the breakdown." ›››

Logan Miller & Kristine Froseth Haunted in the Jungle in 'Prey' Trailer

Prey Trailer

"What if your very own slice of paradise was actually a nightmare?" Blumhouse has launched an official trailer for a horror thriller movie titled just Prey, produced by Hyde Park Entertainment and ImageNation. This jungle island survival movie is the latest from French horror filmmaker Franck Khalfoun (P2, Maniac, Amityville: The Awakening). To help rehabilitate a high school senior for behavioral issues, he is placed on a uninhabited island, but soon finds he is not alone. Being discovered could prove deadly. Logan Miller & Kristine Froseth star as two young strangers forced to run and fight for their lives against a mysterious and deadly force lurking deep in the jungle. This also reminds me a bit of J.D. Dillard's Sweetheart, about a deserted island that's haunted by some creepy ass creature. But this still looks like it has some gnarly scares. ›››

"I believe there are answers in the sky. Out there is where I have found greatest happiness." Amazon + Studiocanal have debuted the first official trailer for the epic adventure movie The Aeronauts, the latest from acclaimed British director Tom Harper of Wild Rose most recently. Also featuring Himesh Patel, Anne Reid, Tim McInnerny, Phoebe Fox, Tom Courtenay, Rebecca Front, Vincent Perez, and Robert Glenister. This looks really cool, I must say. Jai Courtney in First Trailer for Marine Corps Legal Drama 'Semper Fi'

Semper Fi Trailer

"I didn't need you to be my dad, I just needed you to be my brother." Lionsgate has released a trailer for a film titled Semper Fi, originally called Edge of Dawn while in development. The title is a reference to the Marine Corps slogan "semper fi" (in full: semper fidelis), which means "always loyal". The plot is about a police officer who serves in the Marine Corps Reserves who is faced with an ethical dilemma when it comes to helping his brother in prison. Jai Courtney stars as the "by-the-book" officer Cal, and Nat Wolff plays his brother. Also starring Leighton Meester, Finn Wittrock, Arturo Castro, Beau Knapp, Rachel Hendrix, Wayne Pére, Ashton Leigh, Sylvia Grace Crim, Lance E. Nichols, and Rob Mello. This new take on the legendary Batman villain is an original standalone, slow burn origin story of the iconic villain not seen before on the big screen. Described as "a gritty character study of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society, and a broader cautionary tale." In addition to Phoenix, Joker also features Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Bryan Callen, Shea Whigham, Frances Conroy, Glenn Fleshler, Brett Cullen, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, Bill Camp, and Douglas Hodge as Alfred. Hal, wayward prince and heir to the English throne, is crowned King Henry V after his tyrannical father dies. Now the young king must navigate palace politics, the war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life. Timothée Chalamet stars as King Henry V of England, with a full cast including Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Dean-Charles Chapman, Lily-Rose Depp, Sean Harris, Thomasin McKenzie, Tom Glynn-Carney, Andrew Havill, & Steven Elder. Yeah this looks deliciously epic and brutal, a bit like Gladiator meets Elizabeth, or something along those lines. Fire it up. ›››

Watch: Kinky NSFW Animated Short Film 'The Wrong End of the Stick'

The Wrong End of the Stick Short Film

"Oh! I just want to be a good boy." This animated short film isn't for kids. Put them to bed, and then give this a watch. The Wrong End of the Stick is the graduation project of filmmaker Terri Matthews, who studied at The National Film and Television School UK. The film is about a man named Malcom Fletcher, a neurotic, middle-aged teacher lost in a dull marriage with his wife. Facing an identity crisis and breakdown, he begins to explore a deep, hidden sexual desire. Featuring the voices of Nick Ball and Mandy Dassa. The short film is a look at pup play, a sexual kink that involves dressing up and acting like animals. It's a clever and thoughtful take on this subject and embraces the idea with positivity. I like the mix of traditional 2D animation and practical / real-life sets. And I like the pervasive awkwardness throughout, it sets a tone but also helps nudge the story. It's refreshing to see such a unexpected, kinky animated short. Watch below. ›››

HBO Teaser Trailer for Asif Kapadia's 'Diego Maradona' Documentary

Diego Maradona Trailer

"What planet did you come from?" HBO has unveiled a new US teaser trailer for the acclaimed sports doc Diego Maradona, which initially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year (here's the first trailer). The doc film is the latest from acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia, who won the Best Doc Oscar in 2016 for Amy, and should've won an Oscar for his doc film Senna. This time he has crafted a film about the career of celebrated Buenos Aires-born football player Diego Maradona, who played for SSC Napoli in the 1980s. Constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage, this documentary centers on his life and fame and involvement with the Italian mafia. Many in the sport, including football writers, players, and fans, regard him as the greatest football player of all time. He was joint "FIFA Player of the 20th Century" with Pelé. This doc had lots of positive reviews out of Cannes, and it's a must watch for anyone who loves sports and/or wants to learn more about the true story of Diego. Kapadia is quickly becoming a doc master. ›››

Stellar Full Trailer for Hawley's 'Lucy in the Sky' with Natalie Portman

Lucy in the Sky Trailer

"She's tough cooking. Not everyone can handle the ride." Fox Searchlight has debuted a full-length official trailer for Lucy in the Sky, the feature directorial debut of TV filmmaker Noah Hawley (the creator of "Fargo" and "Legion"). Formerly known as Pale Blue Dot, this mesmerizing drama is loosely based on NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak's alleged criminal activities involving her romance with astronaut William Oefelein. In 2007, after completing her mission in space, she drove from Houston to Orlando and confronted another woman. Natalie Portman plays a fictionalized version of her named Lucy Cola, who has a breakdown and starts to lose her grip on reality after returning to Earth. The cast includes Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo, plus Joe Williamson. I like the shifting aspect ratios - seems to be a before / after visualization. Really looking forward to this film. ›››

The Rise of Skywalker Featurette

"A thousand generations live in you now… But this is your fight." At Disney's D23 Expo this year, Lucasfilm revealed a thrilling behind-the-scenes featurette for Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. We're now only 116 days away from opening day, and we've still only seen the teaser trailer. But this "special preview" excites with lots of emotional footage, and even more clues / hints at what's to come in this grand finale. Directed by J.J. Abrams, it continues the storyline started in The Force Awakens following Rey, Finn, & Poe as they fight the First Order. Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Warwick Davis, plus newcomers Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, Richard E. Charlotte Best & Bryan Burton in Trailer for 'A Name Without a Place'

A Name Without a Place Trailer

"Living here, you'll see, time has a way of standing still…" Dualist Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled A Name Without a Place, the latest film from filmmaker Kenny Riches (Must Come Down, The Strongest Man). This is an odd one. After a young man arrives in the Florida Keys, he meets the girl of his dreams. They escape troubles with the locals and stumble upon a secret estate of a narcissistic recluse, who may or may not have found the fountain of youth. Starring Charlotte Best and Bryan Burton as the main couple, Emma Lee and Gordon, plus Patrick Fugit, Elizabeth McGovern, Chris Parnell, David Sullivan, Siddharth Dhananjay, and Christine McCarthy. Well, this looks like an interesting film, not like anything else we've ever seen. I am digging Fugit's crazy-but-cool performance. ›››

Promo Trailer for Kinky Finnish Dramedy Film 'Dogs Don't Wear Pants'

Dogs Don't Wear Pants Trailer

"I've met a nice lady." Time to get kinky. TIFF has debuted an international promo trailer for the Finnish film Dogs Don't Wear Pants, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, and is showing in Toronto next month. Described as an "affecting and absurd dramedy", Dogs Don't Wear Pants is about a guilt-stricken widower who discovers that a demanding dominatrix might be able to give him the therapy he needs. A film about how brutal BDSM and pup play might actually be the therapy certain people need. Starring Pekka Strang, Krista Kosonen, Ester Geislerová, Ilona Huhta, Jani Volanen, and Oona Airola. This funky Finnish film is still seeking international distribution after Cannes, and hopefully a few brave cinephiles will give it a look up in Toronto. I love the title, and from this trailer the awkward comedy seems to elevate this story in just the right way. It's weird but still worth a look. ›››

First Trailer for Disney's New Live-Action 'Lady and the Tramp' Movie

Lady and the Tramp Trailer

"Wow… This is something else." Disney has unveiled the first official trailer for their next live-action update on an animated classic - Lady and the Tramp. This one is also skipping theaters and will be premiering on their new streaming service called Disney+ in November, one of their big launch titles to entice people into subscribing. Lady in the Tramp is a lovable dog movie telling the romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog and a streetwise downtown Mutt. All of the dogs used in the film are rescues, which means it's not entirely CGI. Featuring the voices of Justin Theroux as Tramp, Tessa Thompson as Lady, plus the voices of Sam Elliott, Ashley Jensen, Janelle Monáe, and Benedict Wong; with a human cast including Kiersey Clemons, Yvette Nicole Brown, Thomas Mann, Arturo Castro, Parvesh Cheena, and Adrian Martinez. Official Trailer for 'Great Alaskan Race' About the Original Serum Run

The Great Alaskan Race Trailer

"You are choosing to transport this serum with a stone age solution!" "Have a little faith, will you?" P12 Films has debuted the first official trailer for a family adventure movie titled The Great Alaskan Race, made by writer / director Brian Presley. The movie is a recreation and retelling of the true story of the great serum run of Alaska in 1925. This original "race" across Alaska later became the iconic Iditarod trail sled dog race, still held every year. The legendary serum run originally occurred in the winter of 1924 to 1925 - Leonhard Seppala and his team of sled dogs traveled over 700 treacherous miles to save the small town of Nome from a deadly diphtheria outbreak. The Great Alaskan Race stars Brian Presley, Brad Leland, Treat Williams, Henry Thomas, Brea Bree, and Bruce Davison. Along with a bunch of cuddly dogs. The dialogue in this trailer is atrocious, but at least the dogs look like they're having fun. Check it out below. ›››

Watch: Video of Incredible 658-Page Flipbook Made by Laika Animator

Flipbook Video The Return of Grumpy Cloud

How cool is this?! We don't usually feature videos like this, but this time we have to make an exception and share it anyway. Andy Bailey (aka "Andymation") is a stop-motion animator at the indie studio Laika, who makes his own flipbooks in his spare time. Flipbooks are small paper books with illustrations on each page, so when you "flip" through them quickly the images come alive. It's an old school animation technique and it's very cool to see. He went all out this time and created a massive 658-page flipbook titled The Return of Grumpy Cloud. There's a plot and characters and lots of colors. The other great thing about this video is before he flips through the little book, he explains how he made it and gives a look at his creative process. ›››

Official US Trailer for Epic Chinese Animation 'Ne Zha' Playing in IMAX

Ne Zha Trailer

"A chance the dragons waited a millennium for." Well Go USA has debuted an official US trailer for the epic Chinese animated movie Ne Zha, or Nezha, which has been sweeping the box office in China this summer. The movie has set a new benchmark for Chinese animation. "We assembled 1,600 people in a team from all over the industry to work for nearly five years and, together, we have tried our best to present a good film for the Chinese audience." Ne Zha, based on an ancient Chinese legend (of course), is about a young boy, with the power to destroy the world, who must choose between good and evil in order to break the shackles of fate and become the hero. Featuring the voices of Lü Yanting, Jiongsen Sefu, Han Mo, Chen Hao, Lü Qi, Yang Wei, and Zhang Jiaming. This will be released (with English subtitles) in IMAX first at the end of the month, then in more theaters a week after. It does look epic, and hopefully is as good as they say. ›››

First Full Trailer for James Franco's Love Triangle Film 'Pretenders'

The Pretenders Trailer

"Was their love something real? He has to find out." Cleopatra Entertainment has released the first full trailer for an indie drama titled Pretenders, also otherwise known as The Pretenders, but they're officially releasing it as just Pretenders. Yet another new film directed by James Franco, in addition to Zeroville also out in the next few months. He's making so many films these days it's hard to keep track of them. And does anyone even watch them? Who knows. Pretenders is about a love triangle involving a photographer, his best friend who is a "French New Wave-obsessed" film student, and a beautiful actress who entrances both of them. Starring Jack Kilmer (Val Kilmer's son), Shameik Moore, and Jane Levy as the main three, with James Franco, Dennis Quaid, Brian Cox, Juno Temple, Antoni Porowski, Mustafa Shakir, Tyler Alvarez, and Reema Sampat. This seems particularly wacky and super artsy, almost like Franco is trying to mock film nerds who fall for actresses. But maybe not? Don't really know what to make of this one. ›››

IFC Midnight has debuted the first official trailer for Greener Grass, a very bizarre, dark comedy / satire made by comedians / actors / directors Jocelyn DeBoer & Dawn Luebbe. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and we've been hearing very strange things about it ever since. It's hard to even explain what this film is about. Suburban soccer moms find themselves constantly competing against each other in their personal lives as their kids settle their differences on the field. This stars Dot-Marie Jones, D'Arcy Carden, Jim Cummings, Beck Bennett, Mary Holland, Jocelyn DeBoer, & Dawn Luebbe. Review: Survival Thriller 'Ready or Not' Packs Heat & Plays for Keeps

Ready or Not Review

Formed in 2011 by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, along with their executive producer Chad Villella, the filmmaking trio collectively known as "Radio Silence" has been working in the horror genre for nearly a decade. They made their initial debut in the 2012 horror anthology film, V/H/S, with the segment known as 10/31/98, in which a group of friends in search of a Halloween party stumbles upon an actual house of horrors. In 2014, the horror collective delivered their first feature, a found-footage take on Rosemary's Baby titled Devil's Due, before contributing two segments to the 2015 horror anthology film Southbound. Now, Bettinelli-Olpin & Gillett are back in feature mode delivering the film Ready or Not, a black comedy thriller about an eccentric wealthy family bound by a deadly, time-honored tradition. ›››

Adam Devine Loves His Phone Too Much in Fun First Trailer for 'Jexi'

Jexi Trailer

"You can buy a thousand new phones and I follow you onto every single one of them." That's not creepy at all. Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for Jexi, a new modern tech comedy from the directors of 21 & Over and Bad Moms. Jexi is a riff on Her, the title being a portmanteau mix of Alexa and Siri, about a guy who is addicted to his cell phone. His new phone includes a service called Jexi, voiced by Rose Byrne, which becomes his life coach and personal assistant. But when he finally learns to move on to a life without his phone, Jexi freaks out and tries to keep him all to herself. Adam Devine stars, with Alexandra Shipp, Ron Funches, Charlyne Yi, Wanda Sykes, Justin Hartley, Kid Cudi, and Michael Peña. This starts out pretty fun, but it gets really dumb by the end with bad jokes. Some of it is amusing, but some of it is not. ›››

First Trailer for 'Villains' Thriller with Bill Skarsgård & Maika Monroe

Villains Trailer

"This is a hell of a predicament we've found ourselves in." Alter has unveiled a trailer for an indie thriller titled Villains, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. This twisted, freaky, bonkers film is about a pair of amateur criminals on the run who break into a home hoping to score a new ride. But they stumble upon a dark secret that two sadistic homeowners will do anything to keep from getting out. Uh oh. Starring Bill Skarsgård, Maika Monroe, Jeffrey Donovan, Kyra Sedgwick, Noah Robbins, and Blake Baumgartner. Festival Trailer for Icelandic Film 'The County' by Grímur Hákonarson

The County Trailer

"It's time for us farmers to retake control." Yes! Fight the power! Screen Daily has debuted a festival promo trailer for the Icelandic drama titled The County, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival coming up next month. The film will screen in the Contemporary World Cinema section, after already opening in Icelandic cinemas this summer. From the acclaimed director of the film Rams, Grímur Hákonarson's The County is set in rural Iceland and follows Inga, a middle-aged cow farmer who loses her husband in an accident and must stand on her own two feet. She begins a new life on her own terms by fighting against corruption and injustice at the co-op in her community. Don't follow the herd! The film stars Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir, Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson, and Sigurður Sigurjónsson. I'm really enjoying this outstanding trend of anti-corruption, power-to-the-people films from Iceland these days (see also: Woman at War). More of this. ›››

First Trailer for Australian Kart Racing Movie 'Go!' with William Lodder

Go! Movie Trailer

"You'll drive when I say so!" Roadshow Films has debuted an official trailer for an Australian movie titled simply Go!, about go-kart racing. The feel-good family movie is about a wild young man named Jack who moves to a small town in Western Australia with his single mother. He takes up competitive go-kart racing, but must work with an eccentric team to help him overcome his own problems and win the championship. Starring William Lodder as Jack, and a full cast with Frances O'Connor, Anastasia Bampos, Darius Amarfio-Jefferson, Richard Roxburgh, Cooper Van Grootel, and Dan Wyllie. This looks as cheesy and as predictable as anything from Hollywood, with all the usual "talented but problematic" sports movie tropes. At least the helmet-cam POV looks like fun. "Go! is a high-octane Australian family film with heart." ›››

"Gosh, life is sublime." Kino Lorber has released the official US trailer for an award-winning indie drama titled Synonyms, aka Synonymes, from Israeli writer/director Nadav Lapid. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and it won the Golden Bear, the top prize there, which it definitely deserves (here's my review). Based on the real life experiences of Lapid, Synonyms explores the challenges of putting down roots in a new place. Tom Mercier stars as Yoav, an Israeli man who shows up in Paris, France. His "attempts to find himself awaken past demons and open up an existential abyss in this tragicomic puzzle that wisely knows how to keep its secrets." Also starring Quentin Dolmaire and Louise Chevillotte. The film is also adored by most critics, with David Ehrlich (read his review) describing it as a "sui generis work of tormented genius." Another Day of Life Trailer

"They will erase Angola from the map. This is about lives." GKids has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie animated feature titled Another Day of Life, a much more adult-level film than most of the other animated films that GKids releases. The film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and won awards at numerous other film fests throughout last year. A gripping story of a three-month-long journey that renowned Polish reporter Ryszard "Ricardo" Kapuściński took in the 1970s across Angola, ravaged by a war, in which the front lines shifted like a kaleidoscope from one day to the next. Adapted directly from Kapuscinski's book, telling the true story of a journalist and the lengths to which he'll go to report the news.
