Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2019

Over the last 12 months, I've seen more than 125 new releases — that's over ten days in total spent watching movies — and I'm happy to report that it's been another exceptional year at the multiplex. This year, we got to see vital new work from visionary filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho, Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, Quentin Tarantino, Jordan Peele, Lulu Wang, and Shin'ichirô Ueda, whose zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead is one of the most unique and refreshingly original horror movies of the year. We witnessed great performances from Awkwafina, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson, Eddie Murphy, Florence Pugh, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, and Adam Sandler. And we were all left in awe by stunning cinematic art like 1917, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and The Lighthouse – works of impeccable craftsmanship by the cinematographers, production designers, and costume designers alike. ›››

Watch: 'Skywatch' Sci-Fi Short Film + How They Got Jude Law For It

Skywatch Short Film

"Initiate Project_Osprey." Skywatch is a fun, gripping sci-fi short film that is worth a quick watch. This is made by independent filmmaker Colin Levy, who previously worked at Pixar as a Camera & Staging Artist before jumping full-time into filmmaking himself. Skywatch isn't just a clever short, it's also a showcase for budding filmmakers. Levy also released a video that explains how they were able to get Jude Law to appear in their film. He's only there for a few seconds at the end, but it's a nice cameo and adds some gravitas to this project. Sometimes this kind of big name helps filmmakers get the attention they need to break in. Both videos are worth a watch, to see the short they made and a deep dive into how they made it. Skywatch is set in the near future when drone delivery is commonplace and some hacker kids take their jokes a little too far. ›››

Dafne Keen & Andy Garcia in First Trailer for Road Trip Comedy 'Ana'

Ana Trailer

"We need a real plan!" Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for a road trip indie comedy adventure titled Ana, about a young woman trying to find her real father on the island of Puerto Rico. The film stars Dafne Keen (the badass girl from Logan) as Ana, who meets a man named Rafa in a chance encounter. Together they embark on a road trip to try and save him from bankruptcy, or worse, encountering mystery and danger along the way. Also starring Andy Garcia as Rafa, with Luna Lauren Velez, Ramón Franco, Julitza Berberena, and Blas Sien Diaz. This looks like an intriguing little film, but they're tossing it out rather quietly at the start of January which is really not a good sign. Perhaps it's still worth a watch? Check it out. ›››

The 25 Best Films of the Decade Video

"Are you ready?" It's the end of another decade! With the 2010s winding down, and the 2020s about to kick off, everyone is looking back at the last 10 years and all the films that are truly worth of being singled out and highlighted as the best of the best. Cinephile and writer Milton Lawson has edited a video called The 25 Best Films of the Decade, counting down his 25 favorites. It's similar to David Ehrlich's annual Best of the Year video countdown, with a fine selection of music playing over top of the films as it goes through each of them one-by-one. Lawson's intro: "I edited a supercut video celebrating my favorite films of the decade. Turn up the volume & enjoy." His music selection is just as lovely as the films (and footage) he's picked, and it's a great reminder there's always wonderful films & music to discover. Dive right in and have a good time. ›››

Review: 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' is Strong with the Force

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Co-written and directed by filmmaker J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness, Episode VII - The Force Awakens), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the third entry in this current Star Wars trilogy featuring Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren. It ends the trilogy also featuring Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). The film is the final episode of the nine-part Skywalker Saga, which began in 1977 with George Lucas' iconic Star Wars, later subtitled Episode IV – A New Hope. Over 40 years later, the sprawling space saga of rebellion and romance comes to a satisfying end with a movie that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. ›››

First Announcement Teaser for John Krasinski's 'A Quiet Place: Part II'

A Quiet Place: Part II Teaser

Shhhhhhhh. Paramount Pictures has revealed an announcement teaser trailer for A Quiet Place: Part II, the sequel to John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's sci-fi monster thriller A Quiet Place from 2018. The sequel picks up right where the first film left off. Following the traumatic events at home (seen in the first movie), the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. This stars Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe again. There's not much to this first teaser - just a re-introduction to this family as they begin to venture out. The full trailer will launch on New Years in a few weeks. Until then, it's a good idea to revisit the original if you haven't seen it in a while. Stay tuned for more. ›››

Real Flying Featurette About Tom Cruise Filming 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Top Gun: Maverick Featurette

"It is aggressive. You can't act that!" Paramount Pictures has revealed a new featurette about the making of Top Gun: Maverick, following the fantastic full trailer earlier this week. If you aren't sold on this sequel yet, you will be after this. The video shows us how they filmed this movie by mounting cameras inside actual fighter jet cockpits, so that the experience and the performances are completely real. They really feel all the G-Forces, they feel the intensity of the jet. What an awesome featurette, and boy does this looks incredible. Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and Val Kilmer is also back; with a full cast including Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. Watch the full trailer again. I'm really, really looking forward to this even though we still have over 6 months to wait. But it seems like they're making this return to the old Top Gun world completely worthwhile. Check out the video. ›››

Official Trailer for Russian Video Game Sci-Fi Movie 'A Rough Draft'

The Limey Trailer

"This world belongs to me!" High Octane Pictures has released an official trailer for a Russian sci-fi movie titled A Rough Draft, formerly known as just The Draft. This super trippy, weird techno-thriller is about a video game designer who is stripped of his identity and then recruited by a mysterious group to be the gatekeeper of a multi-dimensional portal. He learns to open the portals to a variety of parallel worlds which represent alternative versions of Moscow: a steampunk Imperial Russia, a post-apocalyptic tropic resort world, a dystopian Gulag world, and a highly advanced utopian world. Over time, Kirill learns that our Earth is a rough draft, a setting for social experiments secretly staged by the government of the utopian world, in order to avoid our mistakes. Starring Nikita Volkov, Yevgeny Tkachuk, Olga Borovskaya, and Yulia Peresild. This looks like a crazy concept for a movie, perhaps just a bit too ambitious to pull it off properly. ›››

First Teaser Trailer for Crime Comedy 'Buffaloed' Starring Zoey Deutch

Buffaloed Trailer

"Are you a hustler?" Magnolia Pics has debuted a short teaser trailer for an indie crime-ish comedy titled Buffaloed, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Starring Zoey Deutch as Peg Dahl, plus Judy Greer, Jai Courtney, Noah Reid, and Jermaine Fowler. New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Steven Soderbergh's Film 'The Limey'

The Limey Trailer

"Tell me about Jenny!" A new trailer has launched for the 4K restoration, 20th anniversary re-release of one of Steven Soderbergh's forgotten early films called The Limey. This "pulp revenge" tale is about a volatile, dangerous Englishman who goes to Los Angeles to find the man he considers responsible for his daughter's death. Not many are familiar with it, released in 1999 after premiering in Cannes. It was Soderbergh's 8th feature film that he directed right after Out of Sight, and right before Erin Brockovich, in the midst of his comeback years. Starring Terrance Stamp, and Lesley Ann Warren, Luis Guzmán, Barry Newman, Joe Dallessandro, Nicky Katt, plus Peter Fonda. "Edited by frequent Soderbergh collaborator Sarah Flack with a constantly surprising and jagged rhythm, and superbly acted by its ensemble cast, The Limey endures as a seminal work of American film modernism and a love letter to the art cinema of the sixties." You can also read a new interview with Terrance Stamp here discussing making this film and the re-release. ›››

First Trailer for Rose Glass' Pious Horror Film 'Saint Maud' from A24

Saint Maud Trailer

"It takes nothing special to mop up after the dying… But to save a soul – that's quite something." A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror film titled Saint Maud, which originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this fall in the Midnight Madness category. It also played at Fantastic Fest, and stopped by the London Film Festival. This unconventional "religious horror" film follows a pious nurse who becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient. It received rave reviews out of TIFF, if this kind of horror is your thing. Saint Maud stars Morfydd Clark as the titular Maud, along with Jennifer Ehle, Lilly Frazer, Lily Knight, Marcus Hutton, Turlough Convery, and Rosie Sansom. This was one of the most talked about films at TIFF this year, and looks like a new take horror fans will dig. ›››

Yet Another Full-Length Trailer for Pixar's Fantasy Adventure 'Onward'

Onward Movie Trailer

"I told them about the map! I told them about the gem! I told them about the curse!" Disney has released one more official US trailer for Pixar's Onward - their next big movie, both written and directed by Dan Scanlon (of Monsters University). This is technically the fourth trailer we've posted, including the original teaser and another international trailer recently. Onward is set in a "suburban fantasy world" and follows these two elf brothers who could not be more unalike. Tom Holland voices Ian Lightfoot, and Chris Pratt voices his brother Barney Lightfoot. The only other main voices listed include Octavia Spencer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The two brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. The more we see of this, the better it looks, though each trailer seems even wackier than the last. But I'm still onboard. ›››

Freya Tingley in Official Trailer for Dark Violinist Thriller 'The Sonata'

The Sonata Trailer

"If the notes are played with exactly the right pitch, they could conjure and seduce the antichrist." Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for indie horror-thriller The Sonata, which premiered at numerous genre film festivals last year - including Fantasporto, Fantafestival, and FrightFest. The film stars Australian actress Freya Tingley (from "Hemlock Grove", Jersey Boys) as a young virtuoso violinist who inherits her long lost composer father's old mansion. When she arrives to there, she discovers a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols, triggering dark forces that reach beyond her imagination. This is a pretty cool concept: a horror movie in which playing music unleashes dark forces. The cast includes (the late) Rutger Hauer, plus Simon Abkarian, and James Faulkner. This definitely looks creepy and cool - I'm curious. ›››

Amusing Trailer for Road Trip Sex Comedy Remake 'Come As You Are'

Come As You Are Trailer

"To our boners!" Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie sex comedy titled Come As You Are, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. It also went on to play at the Traverse City, Calgary, Tallgrass, Philadelphia, and Napa Valley Film Festivals throughout the past year. This film is yet another of the English-language remakes of European films (this one is based on Hasta La Vista). Three young men with disabilities hit the road with a jaded nurse as a driver to a brothel in Montreal catering to people with special needs. Starring Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, & Ravi Patel, plus Gabourey Sidibe, Delaney Feener, Asta Philpot, Janeane Garofalo, and C.S. Lee. Fun International Trailer for Austen's 'Emma' with Anya Taylor-Joy

Emma Trailer

"Who can think of Miss Smith when Miss Woodhouse in near?" Universal UK has debuted a funny official international trailer for Emma, a new adaptation of the classic Jane Austen comedic book about happiness, love and romance. The novel was adapted once before in 1996 into Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow; and was re-interpreted into films like Clueless and Aisha previously. This time around for this adaptation, Anya Taylor-Joy plays Emma Woodhouse, the precocious young woman who plays matchmaker for her friends. The full ensemble cast includes Johnny Flynn, Bill Nighy, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, Josh O'Connor, Callum Turner, Rupert Graves, Gemma Whelan, Amber Anderson, Tanya Reynolds, and also Connor Swindells. This is a better trailer than the original teaser, but mostly because this looks so wacky and fun and amusing. I am glad they're playing up the kookiness of this lifestyle, because it is indeed crazy. ›››
