Watch: Beautiful Video Essay Highlights 'Essential Japanese Cinema'

Essential Japanese Cinema
The world of Japanese cinema is one of the most acclaimed and beloved. This video examines many of the classics, the most essential films ever made in Japan or by Japanese filmmakers. Why is the appreciation of Japanese cinema so enduring? "Narrator Luiza Liz Bond emphasized the 'heightened aesthetic sensibility' of Japanese filmmakers, on display in 'the tender observation of Ozu's Tokyo Story, the poetic rhapsody of Kurosawa's Dreams, the harrowing feminine gaze of Videophobia." The video essay is split into different chapters covering different styles of films: Bushidō, Wabi-Sabi, Mono No Aware, Yūgen, Guro, and Hen. Many all-timer films are featured including The Sword of Doom, Seven Samurai, Hausu, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Tampopo, Love Exposure, Sansho the Bailiff, Tokyo Sonata + many more. Short 'For Fans and Family' Featurette for Epic Action Sequel 'Fast X'

Fast X Featurette
"The enormity of everything hits you like a right hand to the jaw." Oh damn okay, Mr. Cena, that sounds pretty rough. Universal has debuted a quick new Fast X featurette, with the cast talking about how excited they are to be in this movie. It's still about "family". Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto & his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter them and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever. Fast X features returning cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, John Cena, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron. Plus newcomers Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, Alan Richtson, Daniela Melchior, and the legendary Rita Moreno. This is a hilariously awkward featurette, but I guess the cast is all that matters for this marketing. Check it out below. // Continue Reading ›

Review: 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' is a Delightful Surprise

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Review
Fantasy is undoubtedly one of my favorite genres. With incredibly iconic franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, everything that involves fantastical, imaginative adventures captivates me in a special manner. However, my knowledge of the famous tabletop role-playing fame that originates this big screen adaptation is honestly little to none. I'm familiar with the concept and structure of the game itself, but I've never participated in any campaigns. My own personal expectations increased with the especially positive early response to this movie, making me hopeful for a new fantasy flick I might genuinely enjoy. So I am pleased to report that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a delightful surprise. // Continue Reading ›

Anwen O'Driscoll in Lesbian Love Story 'You Can Live Forever' Trailer

You Can Live Forever Trailer
"Thank you for choosing us to be your witnesses." Have a look at the official trailer for this indie LGBTQ drama from Canada titled You Can Live Forever, which originally premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year. When lesbian teen Jaime is sent to live in a Jehovah's Witness community, she falls hard for a devout Witness girl and the two embark on an intense affair with consequences that will reshape the rest of their lives. When their attraction becomes too obvious to hide, the community moves to separate the two, forcing them each to make a terrible choice between faith and love. The film stars Anwen O'Driscoll & June Laporte as Jaime & Marike, Liane Balaban, Deragh Campbell, Tim Campbell, Antoine Yared, and Hasani Freeman. I just hope this film is properly critical of religion, because it doesn't help to hide the truth about how destructive & deadly these institutions often are towards freedom of expression. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Psychological Thriller 'Clock' Starring Dianna Agron

Clock Trailer
"I might be a tough case..." "You're not a case to me, Ella... you're a human being. And the best kind, too." "What kind is that...?" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a psychological thriller titled Clock, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker / actress / writer Alexis Jacknow. This will be dropping on Hulu directly at the end of April after first premiering at the 2023 Overlook Film Festival. The film will follow a woman's desperate attempt to fix her broken biological clock. Dianna Agron stars as Ella, with Jay Ali as her husband and Saul Rubinek as her father. Melora Hardin features as the pioneering doctor managing Ella's treatment. This looks scary af! It seems like A Cure for Wellness but for pregnancy, with some crazy creepy horror shots in the second half of this trailer (ghosts, spiders, screaming faces, etc). Review: Preservation Meditation in 'The Arc of Oblivion' Documentary

The Arc of Oblivion Review
Why do we try to save everything? What is the point of saving everything from our lives it will all be wiped out by entropy one day in the distant future? These are the profound existential questions at the core of this documentary. It's not a spoiler to reveal that – there are no answers to these questions found in this film. It's more of an exploration of these questions with insight from scientists & great thinkers, intertwined with a personal journey of a filmmaker questioning himself and his own process. The Arc of Oblivion is a new documentary from filmmaker Ian Cheney that recently premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival in the Documentary Spotlight section (check out the trailer). It's executive produced by doc legend Werner Herzog, who appears in it briefly at the end, and is a friend of the filmmaker. It also has a nice Herzog vibe as a doc, a very humanistic film exploring an unanswerable topic through conversations with many different people. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: 'Everything is a Remix' 2023 Edition Video by Kirby Ferguson

Everything is a Remix Video
"Remixing can empower you to be more creative." Remix the planet! We're all copying, pirating, remixing when we create anything new. Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has a famous quote in which he says: "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination." Filmmaking is also based around taking and building upon cinematic ideas and art from before to make something new. This 60-minute video essay / YouTube documentary about remixing starts by discussing memes & music, then jumps into movies - covering superhero movies and much more. One of the best examples referenced in this is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the masterpiece animated movie from 2018 that completely changed animation and storytelling. It's a good one to reference, but also an obvious pick because it's so good yet also purposefully connected to the comics and everything that came before - from a multiverse storytelling angle as well. The video eventually gets into video games and tech and the big finale - artificial intelligence. Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

Official English Dub Trailer for Makoto Shinkai's 'Suzume' US Release

Suzume Dub Trailer
GKids has revealed an official US trailer for the acclaimed anime film Suzume, the latest magical creation from beloved filmmaker Makoto Shinkai - director of Your Name and Weathering with You previously. We've featured two other Japanese trailers previously - the most recent one here during the summer and the final one here. It's an action adventure road story around Japan. 17-year-old Suzume's journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a man who tells her, "I'm looking for a door." Soon, doors begin to open across Japan, bringing destruction upon any who are near them. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster. This new anime adventure features character design by Masayoshi Tanaka, art direction by Takumi Tanji, animation by Kenichi Tsuchiya. The English voice cast includes Nichole Sakura as Suzume, with Josh Keaton as Souta; Jennifer Sun Bell as Tamaki; Joe Zieja as Serizawa; Rosalie Chang as Chika; Amanda C. Miller as Rumi; Mela Lee as Miki; and Cam Clarke as Munakata. These voices still sound strange in this, but I am a big fan of Shinkai and hope people go see this in theaters. // Continue Reading ›

Tubi's Asylum Action Western 'Butch Cassidy & The Wild Bunch' Trailer

Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch Trailer
"That's a chance I'm willing to take." Available to watch on Tubi already is an action western rip-off spoof movie called Butch Cassidy & The Wild Bunch, from the Sharknado director Anthony C. Ferrante. One of The Asylum's latest offerings, this western combines the title of tow different classics - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Wild Bunch (1969). When Butch Cassidy and his colorful band of outlaws commit a series of high-profile heists, including a train robbery, a posse of newly-hired guns and seasoned killers working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency are tasked with taking down Cassidy and his rowdy gang. Starring Ross Jirgl, Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Dern, Jilon VanOver, Nikki Leigh, Dee Wallace, Geoff Meed, Alex Knight, and Megan Hensley. Yeah this looks as bad as you're expecting, maybe even worse, but that's exactly what The Asylum is going for every time. How trashy can they make it?! I'm skipping this. // Continue Reading ›

Second Trailer for Spy Series 'Citadel' with Richard Madden & Priyanka

Citadel Series Trailer
"Right now, every agent around the world is looking for you two." Amazon has debuted a second trailer for their international spy series called Citadel, from the creators of the series "Zoo" before. Looks like it might be highly entertaining. A dash of sci-fi added into the mix of this Mission: Impossible-esque concept. Global spy agency Citadel has fallen, and its agents' memories were wiped. Now the powerful syndicate, Manticore, is rising in the void, planning to establish a New World Order. Can the Citadel agents recollect their past and summon the strength to fight back? The high concept streaming event is described as an "action-packed spy series with a compelling emotional center" made by Amazon Studios and the Russo Brothers' AGBO. Richard Madden stars as Mason Kane, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Nadia Sinh, Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, Osy Ikhile, Ashleigh Cummings, Roland Møller, Davik Silje, Caoilinn Springall, and many others. They definitely want this to look and feel like James Bond and M:I but as a streaming series. This would be even better if it was a movie, though it also looks like so many other movies we've seen before. // Continue Reading ›

Action Revenge Film 'Snag' Trailer Starring & Directed by Ben Milliken

SNAG Trailer
"Some people get second chances. I'm going to make sure you never get yours." Assemble Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller titled Snag, made by British filmmaker Ben Milliken. It's set to open in a few US theaters at the end of April with a VOD release following in May if anyone is interested in watching. A lone wolf's quiet existence gets shattered when he learns that the woman he once loved and thought was dead is actually still alive and being held captive by ruthless gangsters. (Of course, this plot yet again.) Now, to take on this dangerous criminal organization, he must seek out allies and storm into a world of violence to rescue the love of his life. The film stars Ben Milliken (who also directed), Jaime Camil, Jonny Beauchamp, David Zayas, Sofia Castro, Michelle Ortiz, and Ana Ortiz. US Trailer for Moroccan-Dutch Coming Out to Parents Film 'El Houb'

El Houb Trailer
"You don't know what it's like to live a lie, Karim." Uncork'd Ent. & Dark Star Pics have revealed an official US trailer for an indie film titled El Houb, made by the Moroccan-Dutch filmmaker Shariff Nasr. After premiering at film festivals around the world last year, it will be opening in select theaters week - and on VOD next week. Writer / director Shariff Nasr's intimate, unique and commanding exploration of a man who comes out to his family. Moroccan-Dutch Karim returns to his family home and opens up to his parents about being attracted to men. Their reaction inspires a journey of discovery through Karim's isolation as he attempts to break an ingrained culture of silence. El Houb is inspired by main actor Fahd Larhzaoui's personal experiences with coming out to his family. El Houb (meaning "the love") focuses on the silent culture the director has observed in Arabic families – not only about homosexuality but cultural taboos in general. Epic First Trailer for Genndy Tartakovsky's 'Unicorn: Warriors Eternal'

Unicorn Warriors Eternal Trailer
"She has powers. She might be the evil we've been fighting again." Let's go! Adult Swim has launched the first trailer for their upcoming action animation series Unicorn Warriors Eternal, premiering in May. It's the latest original creation from animation mastermind Genndy Tartakovsky, who has been working on the "Primal" series for years before this (as well as the Hotel Transylvania movies). The series follows a team of ancient heroes protecting the world from an ominous evil force. The concept almost sounds like a fun homage to "Clone High" (though not really the same) - all-powerful heroic "unicorns" are reborn in the bodies of teenagers, who must now battle darkness on their own, along with their teen angst. Featuring the voices of Hazel Doupe, Demari Hunte, Tom Milligan, plus Ron Bottitta, Victor Alli. This marks the 6th show created by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network Studios after Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Primal, Star Wars Clone Wars, and Sym Bionic Titan. This series has a nice steampunk vibe, along with some rad reincarnated characters. As a fan of Genndy's work, I have to check this out when it launches. // Continue Reading ›

Uh oh. The indie horror film stars Nastaran Razawi Khorasani, Claudio Gabriel Magaña Torres, Mike Reus, Coen van Vlijmen, Jennifer Evenhuis, Guido Gerard, Marije Loermans, and Tom de Jong. A Thousand and One Trailer
"Something gonna happen - I can feel it." Focus Features is releasing the acclaimed, award-winning film A Thousand and One in select US theaters this week - starting on March 31st (and in the UK on April 21st). The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the renowned top prize at the fest. Spanning decades of time in the big city. Newcomer Teyana Taylor stars as Inez, with Aaron Kingsley Adetola, Aven Courtney, Josiah Cross, William Catlett, Terri Abney, Delissa Reynolds, Amelia Workman, and Adriane Lenox. This is one of the finest directorial debuts all year so far, and everyone who has seen it has been raving about it since January. "I feel this overwhelming need to be with her... all the time." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for their erotic thriller series Obsession, arriving for streaming in April in a few weeks. A tense, erotic thriller starring Richard Armitage, Charlie Murphy, Indira Varma, and Rish Shah. Oooh this definitely sounds spicy. Everyone (right, right?) was asking for more erotic thrillers, so Netflix has been churning them out aplenty, following up 50 Shades of Gray and the Polish series 365 Days with more like this. Review: Discussing the Future of Humans in 'Cyborg: A Documentary'

Cyborg: A Documentary Review
Are cyborgs the future? A question that humanity always loves to ask, hoping that one day technology will be advanced enough to actually make this a reality. Though it is already a reality nowadays, however it's still a rather taboo topic - especially in the medical community. There's a new documentary showing this year titled Cyborg: A Documentary, which recently had its world premiere at the prestigious CPH:DOX Film Festival in Copenhagen. Directed by Carey Born, the film is more of a biopic than any kind of provocative look at tech, introducing us to a Spanish "cyborg" man named Neil Harbisson. He was born color blind, unable to see any colors at all (only monochrome), so he convinced a doctor to implant an experimental chip into his brain. The antenna comes out of the back of his head and the small camera on the front computes the colors it sees, and transmits them back into his brain as sounds (various tones). Now he can essentially "hear" color, which has given him an extra sense & different perception of life as a cyborg human on Earth. // Continue Reading ›

Of course it's a sweet story about love and about travel and how gorgeous a place like Vietnam is – criticizing the tourism industry while it's also inviting everyone to hey, come over and visit the country. Rachael Leigh Cook stars (and produces) as Amanda, along with Scott Ly, Missi Pyle, Ben Feldman, Glynn Sweet, Alexa Povah, Jacqueline Correa, Nondumiso Tembe, Andrew Barth Feldman, Morgan Dudley, Quinn Trúc Trần, & Nsưt Lê Thiện. Elemental Trailer
"I've been trying to fill my father's shoes... but I never once asked what I wanted to do." This movie is set in Element City, where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted, fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in. The voice cast features Leah Lewis as Ember, and Mamoudou Athie (one of my favorite actors) as Wade. From the director of The Good Dinosaur, with Pete Docter helping produce at Pixar Studios in Emeryville. Joining the voice cast are Ronnie del Carmen as Ember's soon-to-be retired dad, Bernie; Shila Ommi as Ember's love-seeking mom, Cinder; Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wade's stormy and Air-Ball-loving boss, Gale; Catherine O'Hara as Wade's welcoming mom, Brook; Mason Wertheimer as Ember's admiring earth neighbor; and Joe Pera as a city bureaucrat. One Final Trailer for Trapped Horror 'Stalker' Featuring Sophie Skelton

Stalker Horror Trailer
"Who knows what any of us are capable of?" Another final official trailer is available for this indie horror thriller film titled Stalker, from filmmaker Steve Johnson. It's opening in a few theaters and to watch on VOD later this week, so we're featuring this as a reminder it's out to watch soon. The first trailer dropped last year in the summer, and we've been waiting for this to debut ever since. In this tense and atmospheric horror, Rose Hepburn, a young actress, returns to her empty hotel. Forced to use the old freight elevator, it jolts to a halt on the 12th floor, leaving her trapped with an unusual stranger. Left with no phone signal as a storm approaches, tensions escalate and suspicions rise when Rose discovers the identity of the mysterious man is Daniel Reed, a camera operator who is seemingly obsessed with her. Sophie Skelton (also seen in "Outlander") stars with Stuart Brennan & Bret Hart. This has a super creepy vibe, a smart little horror with only two people. I have a feeling there's going to be some fun twists where she outwits him in the end. // Continue Reading ›

Review: 'John Wick: Chapter 4' is a Masterclass on Action Filmmaking

John Wick: Chapter 4 Review
The first John Wick film came out almost a decade ago, and its success had a tremendous impact on the filmmaking industry, redefining the action genre in Hollywood with an internationally successful franchise. Over the last few years, there has been a gradual evolution in the dedication, time, and budget spent on stunts, mainly intricate fight scenes. Nowadays, every action flick has at least one moment where stuntmen have the opportunity to truly shine. The question surrounding the next sequel, John Wick: Chapter 4, is the same as for the other films: does it manage to elevate the already exceptional level of its predecessors' stunt work even further, or has it lost the initial enthusiasm that conquered so many fans originally in 2014? // Continue Reading ›

Mark Duplass & Sterling K. Brown in 'Biosphere' Comedy Teaser Trailer

Biosphere Teaser Trailer
"Are you not curious what's going on out there?" Maybe we should be more curious about what's going on in here? IFC Films has revealed the first teaser trailer for Biosphere, an indie comedy that first premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year to quite a few positive reviews. Co-written by, produced by, and starring Mark Duplass, it's yet another Duplass Brothers production - cultivating an original idea and giving a first-time filmmaker a chance to create something unique. In the not-too-distant future, the last two men on earth must adapt and evolve to save humanity. Stuck in this "biosphere", they have to figure out what is going on when their fish start dying. I thought this might be another take on the comedy classic Bio-Dome, but seems more of a lockdown/quarantine dark comedy than anything. It stars Mark Duplass & Sterling K. Brown. This is only a first look teaser and sets up the concept, without giving away anything else. Got a really good feeling about this one, especially with a July release date - IFC is confident in it being a hit, too. // Continue Reading ›

Crazy Full Trailer with Edgar Ramírez for Netflix's 'Florida Man' Series

Florida Man Trailer
"You don't bring your trouble into my neighborhood." Oh yeah this looks properly wild and crazy. Netflix has revealed the full trailer for the series Florida Man, based on the iconic "Florida man" memes. I guess? Or maybe just based on all the endless news stories of Florida people committing ridiculously petty crimes. When a struggling ex-cop is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster's runaway girlfriend, what should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey involving digging up buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong. The show is "a wild odyssey into a sunny place for shady people." A perfect description for Florida anyway. Edgar Ramírez stars, joined by Abbey Lee, Anthony LaPaglia, Otmara Marrero, Lex Scott Davis, Emory Cohen, Clark Gregg, Isaiah Johnson, Paul Schneider, & Lauren Buglioli. "This ain't Disney World anymore." The series looks absurdly fun, it seems like they nailed the tone. Or not...? We'll find out in April. // Continue Reading ›

Dutch Doc Film 'White Balls on Walls' About Running an Art Museum

White Balls on Walls Trailer
"Should we be politically incorrect?" Icarus Films has revealed an official US trailer for an intriguing doc from The Netherlands titled White Balls on Walls. The film premiered at the IDFA Film Festival in Amsterdam last year, and recently stopped by CPH:DOX this month, before opening in the US this May. I'm curious to see how they handle this problem and answer questions that are brought up about culture, art, and curation. "In a smart and understatedly witty film that emphasises nuance and complexity over quick slogans and easy solutions, director Sarah Vos has had full access to the conversations at the world-renowned exhibition space at a time when culture is changing." The film is actually a biopic feature, not a documentary or musical, about 1970s record producer Neil Bogart, co-founder of Casablanca Records. It's written and directed by producer / filmmaker Timothy Scott Bogart, who just so happens to be Neil Bogart's son. We featured the first trailer late last year, and here's one more before it opens. Jeremy Jordan stars as Neil, along with Michelle Monaghan, Peyton List, Jason Isaacs, Lyndsy Fonseca, Sebastian Maniscalco, Dan Fogler, Caylee Cowan, and Winslow Fegley. Featuring musicians like KISS, Isley Brothers, Donna Summer, Bill Withers, & Gladys Knight. Doesn't look so bad, but doesn't look good either. // Continue Reading ›

Full Trailer for Epic Live-Action 'Knights of the Zodiac' Fantasy Movie

Knights of the Zodiac Trailer
"There are Gods among us... and Heroes within us." Sony Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a live-action Knights of the Zodiac movie, which is getting a full theatrical release starting in May. The film is a live-action version of the manga Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada, with Mackenyu as the main character Seiya. It's an English-language Japanese action fantasy film, about mythical warriors known as Saints who have served the Goddess Athena throughout the ages, protecting justice & peace on Earth. When the iconic goddess of war reincarnates in the body of a young girl, street orphan Seiya discovers that he is destined to protect her and save the world. But only if he can face his own past and become a Knight of the Zodiac. In addition to Mackenyu, the cast features Madison Iseman, Sean Bean, Diego Tinoco, Famke Janssen, Nick Stahl, and Mark Dacascos as Mylock. This looks a lot like all the video game movies made in the 90s, though the VFX do seem pretty good. The vibrant visuals are intensely exaggerated because this is how they always have to make a movie based on a fantasy story from a manga. It does seem mildly entertaining. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer for Compelling 'Users' Doc About Our Tech-Dominated World

Users Trailer
"What will be the landscape of their childhood memories?" Icarus Films has unveiled an official trailer for Users, an acclaimed documentary film from Mexican-American filmmaker Natalia Almada. This premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival a few years ago, and is finally opening in art house cinemas in June this summer. The visual essay film explores how humanity expresses itself with technology and the intended and unintended consequences of our tech-dominated world. Users traverses places ranging from the largest indoor vertical farm in the world to the perfect artificial wave, from an IVF embryo lab to a fiber optic cable landing. Invisible infrastructure that we all rely on is made visible. Our casual reliance on machines and our alienation from each other is palatable. Urgent global issues like climate change and privacy are explored from the intimate perspective of a mother – thinking, worrying & loving her children. Reviews say that the film is "so beguiling in its imagery & visual symmetry, you can't help but become immersed in her concept." // Continue Reading ›

Watch: A Killer Microwave Horror Comedy Short 'Ding... You're Dead'

Ding You're Dead Horror Short
Here's a fun concept for a horror movie: what if the killer was... a microwave?! This short film from director Jay Salahi premiered a few years ago, but we're just catching up with it. Ding... You're Dead follows a negligent house sitter who is unknowingly stalked by a malevolent flesh-eating microwave. Salahi describes it as a "5-min Sam Raimi inspired Killer Microwave short. We use practical effects to suck someone through a microwave!" Inspired by all the fun B Horror / sci-fi films of the early '80s. Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg watched it and praised it already, saying it's "super fun and REALLY well done." The short stars Trevor Larson, and a demonic microwave. I'm a big fan of throwback horror referencing the make-it-from-scratch mentality of the 80s, when they'd build any crazy idea practically to make it look awesome on screen. Enjoy. // Continue Reading ›

Another Teaser for Composer Film 'Chevalier' Feat. Kelvin Harrison Jr.

Chevalier Trailer
"Master of the sword, maestro of the bow." Searchlight Pics has unveiled a new promo spot for Chevalier, which is now set to open in theaters on April 21st next month. They're calling this a new trailer, though it's more of a 30-second TV spot - still looks damn good. It premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year to rave reviews. Starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a "tour de force performance" as real life composer Joseph Bologne, "Chevalier" de Saint-Georges. The son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne rises to great heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette and her court. It also stars Lucy Boynton as Antoinette, plus Samara Weaving, Minnie Driver, Marton Csokas, Sian Clifford, Alec Newman, Ronke Adekoluejo, and Alex Fitzalan. I am dying to see this!! I love me a good revolutionary film, and this looks like it should be an exhilarating tale of rebellion from the past. Conquering theaters in one month. // Continue Reading ›

The Old Man Movie: Lactopalypse Trailer
"This cow is mine!" 606 Distribution has unveiled an official UK trailer for an Estonian animated comedy called The Old Man Movie: Lactopalypse, originally known as Vanamehe film or The Old Man: The Movie. Based on a popular Estonian web series, The Old Man Movie: Lactopalypse is the most outrageous, crowd-pleasing, stop-motion comedy in years. An outrageous road movie about The Old Man and his three grand-kids in a race against time to stop a milky madman hell bent on killing his prized cow to save the world. The kids and the Old Man have 24 hours to find and milk the rogue bovine before its exponentially expanding udders bring about the "Lactopalypse". Ha. Featuring the voices of Märt Avandi, Reio Blond, & Meriiyn Elge. The film won The Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation at Fantasia in 2020, and first opened in Estonia in 2019, finally finding intl. distribution this year. It reminds me of the Belgian stop-motion comedy A Town Called Panic, but with a few unique Estonian quirks. When Time Got Louder Trailer
"This is for you to be able to do it by yourself." LevelFilm has revealed an official trailer for When Time Got Louder, a Canadian indie film that marks the feature directorial debut of LGBTQ filmmaker Connie Cocchia. This premiered at the Frameline Film Festival last year, and is screening at the Canadian Film Fest this month before it opens in select cinemas in Canada. Alas, we still don't have a US date set yet. Departing for college, Abbie leaves her parents and brother who has autism and is non-verbal. As she explores her independence and sexuality, she's torn between her new life and her love for her brother. The indie film stars Willow Shields as Abbie, Lochlyn Munro, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Jonathan Michael Simao as her brother Kayden. This reminds me of Sia's film Music, which got in trouble for reasons related to being inauthentic, hopefully this one is better (seems to be the director's own story). Official Trailer for 'War of the Worlds: The Attack' Movie from the UK

War of the Worlds: The Attack Trailer
"We don't know what they want, we don't know what they're capable of." Vertical Ent. has revealed the first official trailer for the new British take on this classic sci-fi story - a film called War of the Worlds: The Attack. A modern update on the H.G. Wells classic alien invasion story, the film follows three young astronomers tracking a meteorite that crashes into earth who discover they are at the epicentre of a Martian invasion. A soldier helps the trio and they end up in London where they must find a way to save mankind. Starring Alhaji Fofana, Lara Lemon, Sam Gittins, Leo Staar. The director, a VFX supervisor directing his first film, explains: "The idea was to create a modernized version of War of the Worlds while honoring and trying to stay as close to the original story as possible. It has nostalgic elements for the grown-ups and, at the same time, fresh storylines making it relatable for the younger audiences." Unfortunatley this looks like made for TV junk - the alien attack ships are legit, everything else seems cheesy. Wish it looked better. // Continue Reading ›

Official US Trailer for Cristian Mungiu's Latest 'R.M.N.' from Romania

"To survive, you need to know one more thing: how to fight." IFC Films has revealed an official US trailer for the acclaimed indie drama titled R.M.N., the latest work from acclaimed, award-winning Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. This premiered in competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival last year, and we posted a trailer back then when it initially debuted. One of my least favorite of the fest. An analysis of the driving forces of human behavior when confronted with the unknown, of the way we perceive the other and how we relate to an unsettling future. The director explained the title last year: "RMN in English is NMR: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance – basically a brain investigation. Given how the world looks today, I feel we need one." The film stars Marin Grigore, Judith State, and Macrina Bârlădeanu. Described as a "gripping portrait of ethnic and economic resentments tearing at the fabric of a small mountain town." Renfield Trailer
"I am enough. I deserve happiness. And I take full charge of my life today." Bring on the fangs. After centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there's a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency. Ha! Nicolas Cage plays the Count, joined by Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Adrian Martinez. US Trailer for French Film 'Other People's Children' with Virginie Efira

Other People's Children Trailer

Music Box Films has finally revealed the full US trailer for an acclaimed French film titled Other People's Children, which most recently stopped by the 2023 Sundance Film Festival a few months ago. It first premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival last fall, and also played at TIFF before opening in France last September. Rachel is a happy, 40-ish-year-old teacher who loves her life, her friends, her job, and even her exes. She is exploring the idea of having a child but is not desperate to have one. Intrigued, ambivalent about it at times — an authentic example of the conundrum many women around her age face. Everything changes when she meets a new man with a wonderful 4-year-old daughter. Virginie Efira stars as Rachel, along with Roschdy Zem, Chiara Mastroianni, Callie Ferreira-Goncalves, Yamée Couture, Henri-Noël Tabary, Victor Lefebvre, as well as Sébastien Pouderoux. Must Watch: Oliver Stone's 'Nuclear Now' Climate Change Doc Trailer

Nuclear Now Doc Trailer
"The very thing that we fear... is what may save us." Yes, indeed, listen to Oliver. He did his research on this, he knows what's good. Abramorama has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary titled Nuclear Now, the latest feature made by prolific director Oliver Stone. This premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival last year, where I first saw it and wrote a glowing review of it. A vitally important film for our times, this is more of Stone's urgent climate change documentary than anything else. He addresses the problems, the propaganda, the people, and dives into the most appropriate solution for the moment - atomic energy, or nuclear power. Instead of shutting down and demolishing nuclear plants, we should be building more because yes - nuclear power is the only immediate solution to turn off all of the goal & gas plants while still producing enough power to maintain the worldwide demand for electricity. This is an outstanding film that comprehensively covers this topic, answers questions, and might just make a difference in saving the world. // Continue Reading ›
