Full Trailer for 'Mafia Mamma' with Toni Collette & Monica Bellucci

Mafia Mamma Trailer
"I am tired of this war... My family is tired of this war." Bleecker Street has debuted the full official trailer for an action comedy set in Italy titled Mafia Mamma, the latest film by director Catherine Hardwicke - who hasn't made a new feature since Miss Bala in 2018. The original teaser from last year is much better, as this trailer plays up the jokes and very few of them land. Hardwicke’s new action-comedy, Mafia Mamma, starring Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. An American woman who inherits her grandfather's "Mafia empire," and guided by the Firm's trusted consigliere, defies everyone's expectations – including her own – as the new head of the family business. It's now set to open in US theaters this April. The cast includes Alfonso Perugini, Giulio Corso, and Alessandro Bressanello. Maybe this would be better if it was a red band trailer? Looks bad, not even funny, too many jokes about Italians and even Italians aren't laughing. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for David Lowery's 'Peter Pan & Wendy' Disney Movie

Peter Pan & Wendy Trailer
"Perhaps I don't want to grow up!" Disney has revealed the first trailer for Peter Pan & Wendy, formerly known as just Peter & Wendy, the latest Peter Pan movie from the Mouse House. This is skipping theaters entirely, heading for Disney+ for streaming at the end of April. "This year, return to Neverland." Peter Pan & Wendy is a live-action reimagining of the J.M. Barrie novel and the 1953 animated classic from Disney. It's the latest movie directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight, Pete's Dragon) - get ready to experience the timeless adventure featuring the beloved characters like never before. A live-action adaptation of J.M. Barrie's classic tale of a boy who wouldn't grow up and recruits three young siblings in London to join him on a magical adventure to the enchanted Neverland. The movie stars Alexander Molony as Peter, Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling, Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, Jude Law as Captain Hook, Jim Gaffigan as Mr. Smee, plus Alan Tudyk, Molly Parker, Joshua Pickering, Jacobi Jupe, and plenty others. This looks like a much grittier live-action version than the other ones, but seems to have lost some of its magic... // Continue Reading ›

Roberto Urbina in First Look Trailer for Border Crossing Film 'Deadland'

Deadland Trailer
"I saw you praying in the desert. I was there." A festival trailer is out for an indie film called Deadland, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Lance Larson. The film is premiering at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival coming up in March, playing in the Narrative Spotlight section this year. The film is described as a pyschological thriller - U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Angel Waters, makes a routine apprehension that will haunt him forever. "Though the immigrant he took into custody is killed at a border outpost, his death is only the beginning of the suffering Angel must endure... Set against the backdrop of the harsh and desolate Rio Grande river, Deadland uses the American and Mexican border as a launching pad to explore not only immigration but identity." This stars Roberto Urbina as Angel, McCaul Lombardi, Julieth Restrepo, Kendal Rae, Luis Chavez, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Manuel Uriza, Chris Mulkey, Chris White, and Dave Maldonado. This looks haunting & unsettling! Not just another drama about the US-Mexico border. // Continue Reading ›

Trailer for Comedy 'Somewhere in Queens' Directed by Ray Romano

Somewhere in Queens Trailer
"I'm trying to save him from a lifetime of humiliation!" Roadside Attractions has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Somewhere in Queens, marking the directorial debut of comedian / actor Ray Romano. This first premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and recently played at the 2023 Palm Springs Film Festival in January this year. It's another of these generic life-as-a-family indies that are dropping all over the VOD channels recently. Leo and Angela Russo live a simple life in Queens, surrounded by their overbearing Italian-American family. When their son "Sticks" finds success as a player on the high school basketball team, Leo tears the family apart trying to make it happen for him. Ray Romano directs and co-stars, with Laurie Metcalf as his wife, Jacob Ward as their son, plus Tony Lo Bianco, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jennifer Esposito, Sadie Stanley, Dierdre Friel, and Jon Manfrellotti. This looks like exactly what you expect - a quaint family comedy right out of the 90s, ready to charm viewers all over again. // Continue Reading ›

New Trailer for HBO Release of 'All The Beauty And The Bloodshed'

All The Beauty And The Bloodshed Doc Trailer
"When you think of the profit off of people's pain, you can only be furious." HBO has unveiled their own official trailer for All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, the award-winning documentary film from Laura Poitras. It first premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion prize, then it opened in theaters last the fall thanks to Neon. After the theatrical run it was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars this year, and will be on HBO in March just after the ceremony. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed is an epic, emotional and interconnected story about internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin – as told through her slideshows, intimate interviews, ground-breaking photography, and rare footage of her personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for the overdose crisis. Half of the film is about activism and her protests against the detestable Sackler family that profited on opioid crisis in the US. It's a very powerful documentary that has justifiably won tons of awards & accolades for months already. If you haven't seen this yet, give it a look on HBO soon. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: 'Grands Canons' Short Film - A Symphony of Everyday Objects

Grands Canons Short Film
Take a mesmerizing journey through the world of everyday objects in this hypnotizing animated short film. Grands Canons (not to be confused with the Grand Canyon) is a short film from French filmmaker / artist Alain Biet. Superimposed, condensed, multiplied, thousands of documentary drawings in successive series come to life on the screen, composing a veritable visual symphony of everyday objects. The film is made up of thousands upon thousands of hand-painted images of every day objects, from bulbs to phones to pipes to keys to tools to electronics to utensils to everything else you can think of. The name translates to Big Guns, which is a bit of an odd odd title for this. It originally premiered at film festivals back in 2018 and has been playing around for years before finally ending up online for everyone to enjoy. The perfect detailing in every single painting is just extraordinary; I'd like to see an archive where you can go through each image one-by-one for a closer look. The score also goes perfectly with all this animation - it's really is transfixing. Dive in. // Continue Reading ›

Full Trailer for 'The Red Shoes: Next Step' Dance Film from Australia

The Red Shoes: Next Step Trailer
"You have suffered a great loss... that's not the only story you have to tell." Screen has unveiled the official trailer for a dance movie titled The Red Shoes: Next Step, arriving in Australian cinemas this April. The title seems to be a reference to Powell & Pressburger's classic ballet film The Red Shoes (from 1948), though that seems to be an unofficial relation – it's not a real sequel. When Sam's world begins to spiral following an unexpected life-changing event, she must confront her emotions and her fears to reignite her deep love for dance. From the creators of the family fantasy adventure The Legend of the Five, The Red Shoes: Next Step stars dual gold dance medallist, American-Australian dancer Juliet Doherty in the lead role of Sam Cavanaugh, and The Conjuring 2's Lauren Esposito as her rebellious best friend Eve.
Doherty danced in the hugely successful B.I.G. Ballet Galas recently. The film also features ballet dancer Joel Burke, actress & former dancer Carolyn Bock, ballerina Primrose Kern, dancer Ashleigh Ross, Mietta White, as well as Nicholas Andrianakos. There's no US release set yet, but this is still worth a look if you're into dance. // Continue Reading ›

Second UK Trailer for RomCom Hit 'Rye Lane' from Raine Allen Miller

Rye Lane Trailer #2
"So go on, spill the tea!!" Searchlight Pictures UK has debuted a second trailer for the indie film Rye Lane, which already premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival last month. It won over almost every critic, one of the highlights of the fest (here's our glowing review). Rye Lane is the feature debut of filmmaker Raine Allen Miller, and it will definitely put her on the map - so much style int his. Two twenty-somethings reeling from bad breakups deal with their nightmare exes and connect over the course of an eventful day in South London. Starring Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson as Yas and Dom. "A day of impulsive and joyous mayhem, as these two 20-something Londoners roam Peckham through karaoke bars & playgrounds, all the while inching toward the possibility of opening their hearts again." Official Trailer for Rock Star Docu-Drama 'I'm an Electric Lampshade'

I'm an Electric Lampshade Trailer
"Age is not the limitation that you think it is." Holy Moly Productions has revealed an official trailer for an indie documentary-narrative film hybrid creation called I'm an Electric Lampshade, made by an artist named John Clayton Doyle. Gravitas will finally give the film a VOD / digital release in March this year after first premiering in 2021 at Cinequest. It's a docu-fiction film based on the true story of Doug McCorkle - a buttoned-up, mild-mannered career man. John and his crew follow Doug as he retires from a successful job in corporate accounting and incredibly goes on to become one of the most daring and unlikely performers of the 21st Century. Regina McCorkle, Cesar Valentino, Isra Jeron Ysmael, and Darnell Bernard also star in this joyous, heart-warming, and offbeat docu-narrative adventure "that'll have you cheering from the sofa." This looks like weird and wild, but I can't even tell how much of it is real - did he actually become a rock star? Or was it just for one concert? "This moment no longer belongs to just me, it also belongs to everyone who has asked for change." As we get closer to the Academy Awards this year (they're on March 12th), the next important set of winners have been revealed. The 29th annual SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild Awards) honor the finest performances from 2022, as chosen by other actors which means this is one of the most definitive lists of the very best. All of the nominees, too. Actors know their profession better than anyone and are very particular about good performances. What did they decide should win this year? Surprise - they loved Everything Everywhere All at Once as much as we did, giving it a grand total of four awards - including Best Ensemble (which is also a hint that it will probably go on to win Best Picture next). They also gave Brendan Fraser a big win for his comeback performance in The Whale, which makes me happy because I really think he deserves it. A Norwegian Dark Comedy About Narcissism - 'Sick of Myself' Trailer

Sick of Myself Trailer
"You're still beautiful." Utopia has revealed an official US trailer for a funky Norwegian dark comedy called Sick of Myself, from filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and also played at Fantastic Fest in the fall, as an international genre feature. Increasingly overshadowed by her boyfriend Thomas' recent rise to fame as a contemporary artist creating sculptures from stolen furniture, Signe hatches a vicious plan to reclaim her rightfully deserved attention within the milieu of Oslo's cultural elite. She creates a new persona hell-bent on attracting attention and sympathy. Reviews describe it as "the blackest of black comedies, there are moments so cringe-inducing you will curl up so far inside yourself you might implode." The film stars Kristine Kujath Thorp as Signe, Eirik Sæther as Thomas, with Fanny Vaager, Andrea Bræin Hovig, Henrik Mestad, and Anders Danielsen Lie. Don't take it so seriously, it's meant to be a brutal, biting commentary on narcissism in modern times. And it looks quite spicy indeed. // Continue Reading ›

Cute Trailer for Disney+'s High School Romantic Comedy 'Prom Pact'

Prom Pact Trailer
"Put a shirt on, your tutor is here." Disney has revealed an official trailer for a cute romantic comedy movie arriving for streaming on Disney+ at the end of March titled Prom Pact. This is just a Disney Channel TV movie that is also being released as a feature on Disney+ this spring. The heartfelt romantic comedy is set during the emotion and excitement of high school prom season. It follows Mandy Yang, played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, and her best friend Ben, seniors who are surrounded by extravagant promposals. But not even the excitement of prom can shake Mandy's focus on her primary goal: getting into Harvard. But she lands on the Ivy League's waitlist. So, she resorts to striking a deal with popular jock Graham, whose father is a prominent senator and a Harvard alum. She eventually realizes there's more to Graham, and even more to life than Harvard. The cast also includes Milo Manheim, Blake Draper, Monique Green, Margaret Cho, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Arica Himmel, Jason Sakaki, Chelah Horsdal, as well as David S. Jung. This seems tailor made for a very specific teenage Disney audience - definitely won't be for everyone. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2023 Awards: French Doc 'Sur l'Adamant' Wins Golden Bear

Golden Bear Winner
The 73rd Berlin Film Festival (also known as Berlinale locally) has wrapped its 2023 run following two weeks of screenings, with a big ceremony again in Berlin on Saturday evening, announcing the winner of the Golden Bear (Goldener Bär) for Best Film. That top prize from this year was given to a French documentary titled Sur l'Adamant (or On the Adamant), about a mental health facility located in a boat on the Seine in Paris. The film is directed by a 72-year-old French doc filmmaker named Nicolas Philibert, winning his very first Golden Bear. It's an interesting pick, similar to when the doc Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) won in 2016. Once again, it seems like a political pick, not winning for artistry. The festival overall this year wasn't exactly very exciting, with a lot of bad films and a few good ones. I was expecting Celine Song's Past Lives to win following its Sundance premiere, and Petzold's latest film Afire is also quite good. The rest of the awards are rather lackluster, but not surprising for this fest. Read on for the full list of Berlinale 2023 winners below. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2023: Japanese Thriller '#Manhole' Has Some Gnarly Twists

Manhole Review
The stuck-in-one-place subgenre of horror is packed with clever concepts and places to be stuck in (from a coffin to a sailboat). #Manhole is the latest entry in this subgenre and it truly is one of these films where, no matter what it is anyone thinks is going on before watching, no one will ever guess what the actual twist is until it arrives. The film is the latest feature from Japanese genre director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri (also of Hole in the Sky, Green Mind Metal Bats, Freesia: Bullet Over Tears, Magic, Blazing Famiglia, Sketches of Kaitan City, Summer's End, My Man, Mukoku) and it opened in Japan just a few weeks before premiering at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. The title is officially #Manhole with the hash symbol, which makes sense once the film gets going and the social media subplot kicks in. This quick festival review will be spoiler free, as I'd rather everyone go watch this film without knowing anything more before heading in. It is not a spoiler to say that there are twists, because of course, that's obvious & expected for a horror movie like this. // Continue Reading ›

Promo Trailer for 'Fantastic Machine' Doc About the Camera + Humans

Fantastic Machine Doc Trailer
"That's what entertainment's supposed to do!" Keep our minds off of how bad things are. An early promo trailer is available for a documentary film playing on the festival circuit titled Fantastic Machine, made by two Swedish filmmakers - Axel Danielson and Maximilien van Aertryck. The full title is actually And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine, which is a reference to an old quote that appears in the film. A visually exuberant documentary that uses powerful collages edited out of archive footage, home videos, live-streaming material and private documentation to offer a glimpse at what (or who) is at work when an image of our reality is arranged. Similar in many ways to Sundance 2021's doc All Light, Everywhere. This film is an examination of the history of the camera, taking us through time up to the current day, showing how bad everything has become thanks to manipulation and how this is leading us right to a dangerous degradation of society and humanity as we know it. It's a smart film that lets all the footage speak for itself, I just hope it connects with & shakes some people awake from their obsession with social media videos. Extended Trailer for Guadagnino's 'Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams'

Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams Preview
"No matter how humble a family, a shoemaker was humbler, still." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled this 7-minute extended preview for a documentary film from 2022 titled Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams, made by Call Me By Your Name's Italian director Luca Guadagnino. This already opened in theaters last year (watch the original trailer) after first premiering at the 2021 Venice Film Festival. It's now available on home video to rent or buy. I was entirely fascinated by this film, even if it runs a bit long, it's an intriguing look at this man's remarkable story and how he really believed in making the perfect shoe for everyone. In the early 20th century, impoverished teenage Italian cobbler Salvatore Ferragamo sailed from Naples to America to seek a better life. He settled in Southern California, and became Hollywood's go-to shoemaker during the silent era. In 1927, he returned to Italy and founded in Florence his namesake luxury brand. It's narrated by Michael Stuhlbarg as Salvatore, and features Martin Scorsese + many prominent interview guests. This just the right kind of nice tease that should make anyone want to keep watching. Berlinale 2023: Celine Song's 'Past Lives' is a Lovely Look at Choices

Past Lives Review
It will always be a mystery trying to figure out where life will take us next. Even though we cannot see into the future, many dwell on their past and the choices they've made. It is an alluring thought process, usually tantalizing and stimulating. We can wonder what if over & over, and can make an important decision taking us down a different path today, but our lives will always continue from where they are right now. Playwright Celine Song's feature directorial debut is titled Past Lives, a beautiful, warm embrace of a film touching on these topics of choices & decisions. After first premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, it has gone on to screen at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival in the Main Competition section. Everyone seems to be falling in love with this film at both festivals, and it makes me so happy to observe. I first watched the film at its world premiere at Sundance, putting it on my Best of the Fest list, but I wanted to wait until my second viewing at Berlinale before writing down more of my thoughts on it. I can confirm it's just as wonderful a second time. // Continue Reading ›

Fun Trailer for Martial Arts Movie 'Beyond Redemption' with Brian Ho

"How deep are you?" "As deep as it gets." Well Go USA has debuted a brand new trailer for the official re-release of this martial arts action thriller titled Beyond Redemption. This movie originally premiered in 2015 and open in Canadian theaters in 2016, and was eventually given a proper Blu-ray / VOD release in the US by Well Go. Beyond Redemption is the only feature directed by Bruce Fontaine, a martial arts expert & stuntman who spent years in Hong Kong. It stars a group of other stuntmen in most of the roles, including Brian Ho, in a generic but entertaining undercover story. This seems like one of these underground cult hit action films that has been lost in the mix, now finally getting a chance to shine again. A weary undercover cop must maintain his cover while saving the daughter of a notorious Triad Boss from becoming collateral damage in a sting operation gone wrong. It'll be out to watch in the US starting in March including on VOD. A coming-of-age film that follows Bea from birth to graduation as she navigates life with neurodivergent parents and an extended family who can't quite agree on the best way to help. "Inspired by a true story, Wildflower is powered by Bea’s witty, bewildered voiceover. With its top-notch ensemble cast — which includes Jean Smart and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver as Bea’s battling grandmothers — the film spills over with compassion, curiosity, and boisterous, unpredictable life." Review: Elizabeth Banks' 'Cocaine Bear' Delivers What it Promises

Cocaine Bear Review
There are several factors that influence a viewer's decision to go to the theater or press "play" on a streaming service to watch a recent movie. Nowadays, it's extremely rare to see an audience exclusively persuaded by a mere premise – Cocaine Bear may be one of those uncommon gems. The title doesn't lie in the slightest: Jimmy Warden's script is inspired by a (very short) true story transformed into a kind of animal slasher wrapped in a dark comedy environment. Actress / filmmaker Elizabeth Banks ventures into directing for the third time (following Pitch Perfect 2 and Charlie's Angels), but can she handle such a crazy premise? // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Rare Objects' Adaptation Directed by Katie Holmes

Starring Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke, Alan Cumming, David Alexander Flinn, and Katie Holmes (who's also currently in Anna Ziegler's new play The Wanderers). It features an all-women set of writers, directors, and producers bringing this story to the screen. The world of The Power is "our world," but for one twist of nature. Suddenly all teenage girls in the world develop the power to electrocute people at will. It's hereditary, it's inbuilt, and it can't be taken away from them. Coming alive to the thrill of pure power: the ability to hurt or even kill by releasing electrical jolts from their fingertips, they rapidly learn they can awaken the Power in older women. Focus Features has revealed a trailer for an indie drama titled A Thousand and One, an award-winning drama about a family in Harlem growing up and struggling to get by. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, playing to rave reviews and immense acclaim. I was at the world premiere at Sundance and it definitely deserves all the buzz (it's included in my Best of the Fest recap). After unapologetic and fiercely loyal Inez takes her son Terry from the foster care system, mother & son set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity, stability, in a rapidly changing New York City. Newcomer Teyana Taylor stars as Inez, along with Aaron Kingsley Adetola, Aven Courtney, Josiah Cross, William Catlett, Terri Abney, Delissa Reynolds, Amelia Workman, and Adriane Lenox. Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a chilling true crime documentary film titled I Got a Monster, a look at corrupt cops and how bad the police system can be when they run around the laws themselves. In March of 2017, America's deadliest city was rocked by one of the nation's biggest Police corruption scandals. Local hero & cage-fighting super-cop Wayne Jenkins was federally indicted on racketeering charges, along with six other members of Baltimore's elite Gun Trace Task Force. This is about that corruption and what was really going on - based on the book I Got a Monster: The Rise and Fall of America’s Most Corrupt Police Squad. This is the same story covered in the HBO series We Own This City, starring Jon Bernthal as Wayne Jenkins. This documentary takes viewers around every twist and turn of this real-life cat-and-mouse game where the cops are also the robbers and those who are meant to protect our safety turn out to be the ones jeopardizing it. The film looks frightening and important. // Continue Reading ›

Sebastian Maniscalco & De Niro in 'About My Father' Comedy Trailer

About My Father Trailer
"I'm trying to make sure you don't make an ass out of yourself by being somebody you're not." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for another fun comedy titled About My Father, pretty much movie created in the same vein as Meet the Parents or Guess Who's Coming to Dinner or Why Him?. When Sebastian tells his old-school Italian immigrant father Salvo, of course it's played by Robert De Niro, that he is going to propose to his all-American girlfriend, Salvo insists on crashing a weekend with her tony parents. The movie stars and features a script co-written by Italian-American comedian / actor Sebastian Maniscalco. This definitely looks and sounds as ridiculous as this kind of comedy should. The ensemble cast includes Leslie Bibb, Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, Brett Dier, David Rasche, and Carla Christina Contreras. This really looks like a paint-by-numbers, made-by-AI comedy for the streaming era. Are there any good jokes? // Continue Reading ›

Melissa Barrera & Paul Mescal in First Teaser for 'Carmen' Dance Film

Carmen Teaser Trailer
"He yearns for the tears of our eyes. His heart pumps sand through his veins, not blood. Anything, that he might taste life again." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed a first look teaser trailer for the film Carmen, which originally premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year. It also stopped by the Adelaide Film Festival. This is renowned dancer / choreographer Benjamin Millepied's feature directorial debut, re-telling the opera for the big screen this time. A modern-day reimagining of one of the classical opera "Carmen" – an exhilarating vision from Benjamin Millepied starring Melissa Barrera and Paul Mescal. Carmen is a gritty modern day tale, with a majestic score, and dream-like dance sequences that evoke magic realism. Featuring music by the wonderfully talented Nicholas Britell - which is one of the most exciting parts about this. The film also stars Rossy de Palma, Elsa Pataky, Nicole da Silva, Tara Morice, Benedict Hardie, Richard Brancatisano, and Kaan Guldur. This looks like an intriguing modern musical with a few twists, including intricate dance sequences in every scene. This is worth a look to see what it's all about. // Continue Reading ›

Crystal J. Huang in Samurai Thriller Film 'Dark Feathers' Official Trailer

Dark Feathers Trailer
"I want to know how I'll die." An official trailer is out for an indie film titled Dark Feathers, described as a psychological thriller involving samurai set in California. It's co-directed, produced by, and stars a Chinese actress named Crystal J. Huang, playing a woman named Kate. Michael Madsen also dons a Japanese Kimono as a "white samurai" operating a traditional clan in modern San Francisco. "With an elegant plot about dancing and martial arts, and a gorgeous cast including multiple world class Dancing with the Stars, the film raises the question about if the mystery of a murder can possibly be solved by logical reasoning." Also with Gilles Marini, Karina Smirnoff, Lan Kay, Scott Lea, and Kyosuke Mukai. A woman must choose loyalty to a historical Asian clan, or her non-traditional love, amidst the deaths of her dance partners being investigated by her new lover. This looks rather strange, not too sure it will be any good. Check it out. // Continue Reading ›

New US Trailer for Pope Francis Doc 'In Viaggio' from Gianfranco Rosi

In Viaggio Trailer
"If you give the best of yourself, you will help the world become a different place." Magnolia Pictures has revealed an official US trailer for the documentary In Viaggio, which translates in Italian to En Route, the latest from acclaimed Italian filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi (best known for Fire at Sea and Notturno). He follows the travels of Pope Francis all around the world as he meets with everyday people. In the first nine years of his pontificate, Pope Francis made a total of 37 trips to 53 different countries, focusing on his most important issues: poverty, migration, environment, solidarity and war. Intrigued by the fact that two of Francis's trips, the very first to the refugees landing in Lampedusa and another one in 2021 to the Middle East, mirror the itineraries of his most recent films, Rosi follows the Pope's Stations of the Cross, sees what he sees, hears what he says and creates a dialogue between archival footage of Francis' travels, images taken by Rosi himself, recent history and the state of the world today. This US trailer is packed with quotes from many respected critics talking about how potent and powerful it is. Seems like it might be worth your time. // Continue Reading ›

Keira Knightley Reports on the 'Boston Strangler' in Crime Film Trailer

Boston Strangler Trailer
"How many woman have to die before it's a story?" 20th Century & Hulu have revealed the official trailer for Boston Strangler, an original movie based on the infamous "Boston Strangler" serial killer from the 1960s. "Sixty years ago, two women helped uncover one of history’s most notorious serial killers. This is their story." Keira Knightley stars as Loretta McLaughlin, who was the reporter for the Record-American newspaper who broke the story of the Boston Strangler. Along with her colleague, the reporter Jean Cole, McLaughlin challenged the sexism of the era, pursuing the story at personal risk and uncovering corruption that cast doubt on the identity of the strangler. Knightley stars with Carrie Coon as Jean Cole, and a cast including Alessandro Nivola, Chris Cooper, David Dastmalchian, Robert John Burke, Morgan Spector, and Bill Camp. This is almost like She Said meets Zodiac, which isn't the most appealing pitch, but it doesn't look bad. Meet Finland's New Action Hero - Official Trailer for 'Sisu' Action Movie

Sisu Trailer
"You'll see what happens when you take everything from him." Lionsgate has revealed an official US trailer for the most awesome Finnish action movie Sisu, arriving in US theaters this April. Finally!! I saw this at the Sitges Film Festival last fall and it absolutely RULES. When an ex-soldier discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness and tries to take the loot back home, Nazi soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him. Jorma Tommila stars as Aatami, who takes on the entire Nazi battalion himself. "Sisu" is a Finnish idea described as "stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery" - and this movie embodies that perfectly. The cast also includes Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, & Onni Tommila. I raved in my review: "This guy is now an action cinema icon, all hail Jorma Tommila!! Even if it is an obvious homage to Mad Max, Tommila's mostly dialogue-free performance is the epitome of awesome." It has 100% on RT. Yes this is one you just HAVE to go see on the big screen. Can't wait for it to hit theaters! Bring on this action legend. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2023: The Whimsical, Angry Philosophy of Malkovich's 'Seneca'

Seneca Review
"Sometimes even to live is an act of courage." As much as this may be the perfect kind of ridiculous film to dismiss and forget, I can't stop thinking about Seneca. Made by German filmmaker Robert Schwentke, who has been working in Hollywood for years (RED, R.I.P.D., Allegiant, Snake Eyes), he has returned to his roots to make something much more intelligent and so much angrier than his action blockbusters. It is an exceptionally wacky, weird, linguistically loquacious, intellectually stimulating, amusing, strange film that is just as indescribable as it is thought-provoking. I can already tell that most critics, actually most people at all who dare to watch this film, will hate it. It's heavy-handed and direct, especially at the end, which always upsets most people. Yet also so funky and, well, for lack of a better word – philosophical (because of course it is, considering it's about a famous philosopher) – that it just won't sit well with most viewers. Even if it is far from perfect, I can't help but want to talk about Seneca, and talk about why I find it fascinating anyway. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Freaky Fun Felt Stop-Motion Animated Short 'Eat Your Carrots'

Eat Your Carrots Short Film
Make sure you eat all your vegetables today - they're important for your health and well being. Though after watching this short, you might want to leave the carrots for another day? Eat Your Carrots is a fun stop-motion animated short film made by a Montreal-based filmmaker named Laura Stewart. The strange little 3-minute short is about a girl who finds an eyeball growing on her arm after, well, eating her carrots. It's animated using felt and fabric, and it's cute and funny and freaky and weird all at once. I wish there was more to this, but it's just a fun little journey into the kooky mind of an animation filmmaker. If anything, I hope the attention this short gets allows Laura to keep making more funky felt stop motion animated films like this. Perhaps she should make a whole series about various vegetables and their many health "benefits"? // Continue Reading ›

Perfect Addiction Trailer
"She's mine – always will be, right?" Prime Video has revealed an official trailer for Perfect Addiction, an intense romantic thriller co-produced by Germany and the US. This actually already opened in Germany on Valentine's Day, but it won't open in the US until later in March - playing theaters here and also on Prime Video for streaming everywhere else. When she discovers that her MMA champion boyfriend has been cheating on her with her own sister, she sets out to get revenge by training the one man capable of dethroning him: his arch-nemesis Kayden. She will take bring down both in the ring and out. How's that for a fun modern romance movie concept? The film also stars Matthew Noszka, Jay DeMerit, Nicholas Duvernay, Ross Butler, Manu Bennett, Poppy Gilbert, and Bree Winslow. This is premiering at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival in their new "Berlinale Series" section, streaming this March in Germany. Still no info for the US. Trailer for 'Sweetwater' - About the First African American NBA Player

Sweetwater Trailer
"Change is happening - but I don't know if my city can take it." Briarcliff Ent. has revealed a trailer for a sports movie called Sweetwater, telling the true story of an iconic basketball player. This opens in theaters in April, right after the NCAA finals, and hasn't played at any festivals. In the fall of 1950, Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton forever changed the game of basketball when he became the very first African American contracted to play in the NBA. "The game of basketball would never be played the same." This is "inspired" by the true story of Hall of Famer Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton - he played his first game for the New York Knicks four days after the debut of Washington Capitols player Earl Lloyd, the first black player to appear in an NBA game. Everett Osborne stars as Nat, with a cast including Jeremy Piven, Cary Elwes, Richard Dreyfuss, Eric Roberts, Kevin Pollak, Jim Caviezel, Mike Starr, and Gary Clark Jr. This seems a bit generic but looks like a good story to tell anyway about an important person who is not that well known nowadays. // Continue Reading ›

Review: 'Ant-Man: Quantumania' is a Disappointing Start to Phase Five

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Review
Despite much discussion about MCU's Phase Four - from its structure to the ever-complicated quantity vs. quality debate - the truth is that it was generally well received. Personally, I prefer this last "Phase" to the other(s), but either way, the adventures of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) never really impressed me. If the original is a generic yet decent origin flick, the sequel is one of the few movies in the MCU that didn't get a positive review from me. Considering this and the fact that the "big bad" of The Multiverse Saga is introduced – on the big screen – in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, expectations weren't exactly easy to define. // Continue Reading ›

Berlinale 2023: 'BlackBerry' is a Very Geeky Story of RIM's Rise & Fall

BlackBerry Review
Another story of nerdy kids who build some innovative technology that goes on to change the world – until it grows too big for them to handle and they lose control of it all. It's a pretty common story these days, and almost always makes for captivating entertainment, even if we already know what's going to happen. That's exactly the case with BlackBerry, a new Canadian film from director Matt Johnson which is premiering in the main competition at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. It's a bit of an odd pick for this fest, but it's a good film nonetheless. It's not at all experimental or innovative, which is totally fine; it's a decidedly linear and straight-forward story about the guys who created the BlackBerry cell phone. It was invented by a group of very geeky Canadian men who ran a little company called Research in Motion (aka RIM). After taking on an aggressive co-CEO from the business world, things quickly took off, and the rest is history, etc. Another Icarus story about nerds – and one mega asshole businessman – flying too high once they achieved success. // Continue Reading ›

Festival Promo Trailer for 'The Echo' Mexican Town Documentary Film

The Echo Trailer
"Work is work, it's not easy." The Match Factory has released the festival promo trailer for a documentary film titled The Echo, originally known as El Eco. It is premiering this weekend at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, hence this first trailer out now. The Echo is the latest film from award-winning filmmaker Tatiana Huezo, whose previous film Prayers for the Stolen earned a number of accolades after first premiering at Cannes in 2021. In the remote village of "El Echo" that exists outside of time, the children care for the sheep and their elders. While the frost and drought punish the land, they learn to understand death, illness and love with each act, word and silence of their parents. A story about the echo of what clings to the soul, about the certainty of shelter provided by those around us, about rebellion and vertigo in the face of life. About growing up. I love the poster for this (seen below) and I'm hoping to catch it during the fest. Worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

First Teaser for 'Love & Death' with Elizabeth Olsen & Jesse Plemons

Love & Death Trailer
"I just don't want anybody to get hurt." HBO Max has revealed a first look teaser for another true crime series titled Love & Death, arriving for streaming in April this spring. How many stories do we need to tell about someone quiet and nice becoming a murderer? Is it really healthy for society, even if it is a real story? Two churchgoing couples enjoy small town family life in Texas - until somebody picks up an axe. Based on the true story of Wylie, Texas housewife Candy Montgomery, who was accused of the brutal axe murder of her friend Betty Gore in 1980. If this sounds familiar, it is - this exact same murder was already adapted into a streaming series called Candy, starring Jessica Biel as Candy, which debuted last year. Love & Death stars Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons as lovers Candy and Allan, with a cast including Patrick Fugit, Lily Rabe, Keir Gilchrist, Elizabeth Marvel, Tom Pelphrey, Krysten Ritter, & Beth Broderick. I guess Americans really enjoy a good ol' "nice churchgoer turns into a murderer" story, so here you go again. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for Netflix Animated Movie 'The Magician's Elephant'

The Magician's Elephant Trailer
"My sister lives! And I will find her." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for an animated movie titled The Magician's Elephant, arriving for streaming this March. It's adapted from two-time Newbery Award winning author Kate DiCamillo's classic novel, as a "joyful animated reimagining." When young Peter sets out to find his sister, his optimistic spirit guides him through an unexpected encounter with an elephant and three seemingly impossible tasks, also giving hope to his town along the way. The director: "I am forever grateful for our brilliant crew at Netflix and Animal Logic that collectively designed and crafted a beautiful, surreal yet tangible world in which our compellingly layered and diverse cast of characters flourishes." The voice cast includes Sian Clifford, Pixie Davies, Natasia Demetriou, Dawn French, Brian Tyree Henry, Noah Jupe, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Aasif Mandvi, Mandy Patinkin, Benedict Wong, and Miranda Richardson. Chilling Trailer for Netflix Doc 'MH370: The Flight That Disappeared'

MH370 Doc Trailer
"How is it possible for an airline to disappear out of thin air" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a documentary mini-series titled MH370: The Flight That Disappeared. It's debuting 9 years to the date when this Malaysian Air flight mysteriously disappeared and was never heard of again, with little evidence to explain what happened or where it went. There have been many investigations and analyses into this air travel conundrum, trying to figure out whether it was sabotage or just another accident. This doc is another attempt at examining everything and coming up with theories. On March 8th, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared from radar. When the 239 people on board went missing, a global investigation into the greatest mystery of the modern age ensued. Despite official reports, countless theories, and tireless searches for evidence, one central question remained - What Are We Missing? This doc series seems to play up the idea that it was malicious and there's a big cover up, though other investigations (read this) have disproved this and presented simpler but still scary scenarios of aircraft failure/malfunction. Still scary to think about. // Continue Reading ›
