Michael Shannon & Kate Hudson in Comedy 'A Little White Lie' Trailer

A Little White Lie Trailer

"Talk to me about literature!" Saban Films has revealed an amusing official trailer for a comedy titled A Little White Lie, which will be out on VOD to watch starting in March. Another of these uninteresting new films that despite having a good cast, will probably turn out pretty mediocre from the looks of it. When a handyman living in New York City is mistaken for a famous and famously reclusive writer, he's brought to a prestigious university where he is to deliver a keynote address to save the school's literary festival. "Shriver must do whatever it takes for his shot at love in this fish-out-of-water comedy." It's based on the book called Shriver. The film stars Michael Shannon as Shriver, with Kate Hudson, Zach Braff, Kate Linder, Aja Naomi King, plus Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Don Johnson. This looks like a wacky mix up with a fun ensemble of talented actors, but will it be any good? Maybe it has a good few good laughs? Have a look. ›››

New US Trailer for Thriller 'Transfusion' Featuring Sam Worthington

Transfusion Trailer

"We're all just men. We're not invincible, just trying to walk a line between courage and fear." Saban Films has unveiled a new US trailer for the Australian crime thriller called Transfusion, marking the feature directorial debut of Matt Nable. It's now arriving in the US in March this year, after first playing in Australia earlier in January. A former Special Forces is operative thrust into the criminal underworld to keep his only son from being taken from him. In between performing his roles in the Avatar sequels for James Cameron, which were also filmed in Australia, Sam Worthington took on this role. He plays a father suffering from PTSD and without identity after retiring from the Special Air Service regiment (SAS) of the Australian Army. The thriller also features Phoebe Tonkin, Edward Friday Carmody, Matt Nable, Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, and Sam Cotton. It looks pretty generic overall, though there might be some good performances. ›››

Discovering Up-and-Coming Artists - The Magic of Sundance 2023

2023 Sundance Film Festival

Why go to film festival if not to discover some of the best up-and-coming filmmakers? The 2023 Sundance Film Festival has just wrapped and after screening over 100 new films. Was it a success? Absolutely. The festival returned to an in-person event in the snowy city of Park City, Utah after two years of virtual festivals during the pandemic. Sundance is famous for being the place where directors like Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez made their mark, breaking into the industry with their first indie films. In recent years they've also been responsible for launching Damien Chazelle (Whiplash in 2014), Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station in 2013), Dee Rees (Mudbound in 2017), Ari Aster (Hereditary in 2018), Lulu Wang (The Farewell in 2019), and Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You in 2018). At Sundance 2023, the festival decided to feature a selection of mostly unknown, first-time filmmakers and it paid off. This is one of their best line-ups in years, with an especially strong selection of high quality indie films from a new generation of artists. ›››

Lauren Biazzo Wants Revenge in Religious Thriller 'The Nomad' Trailer

The Nomad Trailer

"His life is not yours to take!" She wants that revenge anyway. An official trailer has debuted for a film titled The Nomad, made by NYC-based filmmaker Daniel Diosdado. There's not much else worthwhile featuring this week in terms of new movie trailers, hence why this is being posted. Doesn't look so good. When a reporter filming a story about an atheist serial killer targeting the city's priests comes face to face with the killer, she must choose between turning him in and breaking the news… or perhaps directing him towards her abusive father and wrapping up her own story. The Nomad stars Lauren Biazzo, Dietrich Teschner, Vanessa CalderĆ³n, Anthony Goss, and Marianne Goodell. This looks like more faith-based nonsense filmmaking, covering up intense religious propaganda with a generic thriller story about a killer. Have fun. ›››

Teaser Trailer for 'The Fist of the Condor' 80s Throwback Action Film

The Fist of the Condor Trailer

"He deserves his revenge." Check out this early teaser trailer for an indie action film from Chile titled The Fist of the Condor, which is premiering at the 2023 Rotterdam Film Festival - underway right now. This is the latest film from a Chilean indie director named Ernesto DĆaz Espinoza, who is best known for his rad low budget action films including Kiltro, Mirageman, Mandrill (we reviewed this one back in 2009). This one also stars Marko Zaror, who also produced and has appeared in plenty of his films before. A group of martial artists from around the world search for a book that contains the ancient secrets of how to overcome the limits of the human body - tracking down one man known as El Guerrero. The cast also includes Gina Aguad, Eyal Meyer, Man Soo Yoon, Jose Manuel, & Fernanda Urrejola. This is clearly a throwback tribute to cheesy action films from the 80s & 90s, with a training montage in the mountains and epic fights on the beach. It actually does look pretty damn cool, and the fights do seem like they'll be thrilling to watch. ›››

Festival Trailer for 'Sea Sparkle' Belgian Film Premiering at Berlinale

Sea Sparkle Trailer

"Do you know anything about sea creatures?" An early festival promo trailer has debuted for a film titled Sea Sparkle, which is premiering soon at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival in a few more weeks, playing in the Generation section. It has a release date set in Belgium, but it is still seeking distribution internationally. When her father dies at sea, Lena starts desperately looking for the cause, convinced a massive sea monster is to blame. Her relentless push against the tide reveals a tale of anger and grief, yet also of the strength and comfort the ocean provides. The family drama follows a fisherman who dies at sea and his teenage daughter who's determined to prove that he was killed by a magical sea creature. Said to be inspired by the writer's personal experiences. This stars Saar Rogiers, Dunia Elwaleed, Sverre Rous, Valentijn Dhaenens, and Hilde De Baerdemaeker. This one mixes the young girl's punk attitude with a mysterious sea beast concept, though unfortunately it does not look as good as it should. Still curious to see how it plays anyway. ›››

'The Integrity of Joseph Chambers' Trailer with Jeffrey Dean Morgan

The Integrity of Joseph Chambers Trailer

"My wife didn't even want me to come out here… Seems like the whole word's falling apart." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled The Integrity of Joseph Chambers, the latest from the director of the highly rated The Killing of Two Lovers. This premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, and also stopped by the Champs-ƉlysĆ©es, Melbourne, Nashville, Newport Beach, Denver, and Montclair Film Festivals last year. A family man, hoping to prove his survivalist capabilities and manliness to his family, decides to irresponsibly head off into the woods and go deer hunting by himself. His boredom is short-lived, however, when in the blink of an eye, Joe undergoes a traumatic experience.. Starring Clayne Crawford, Jordana Brewster, Michael Raymond-James, & Jeffrey Dean Morgan. First US Teaser Trailer for 'The Five Devils' with AdĆØle Exarchopoulos

The Five Devils Teaser

"A queer, witchy thriller." Mubi has revealed the first US teaser trailer for The Five Devils, a French film from director LƩa Mysius who originally broke out a few years before with her little film titled Ava. This already premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight, and is set to open in the US this March. Vicky lives with her mother Joanne and father Jimmie, a man struggling to find his place. When Vicky's aunt Julia arrives after being released from prison, her presence brings back the past in a violent, magical way. She has some special powers that allow her to connect to the past through smells. It's a unique film, with a magical performance by the young actress Sally DramƩ as Vicky - who is the real heart & soul of it. Adam Sandler & Jennifer Aniston Back in 'Murder Mystery 2' Trailer

Murder Mystery 2 Trailer

"This is a distraction… from the escape!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Murder Mystery 2, a sequel to the hit streaming comedy from 2019. I'd sat this an entirely unwanted and unnecessary sequel, but that might not be true considering tons of people did watch this first movie, even though it had tons of bad reviews. Full-time detectives Nick and Audrey are struggling to get their private eye agency off the ground. They find themselves at the center of international abduction when their friend Maharaja is kidnapped at his own lavish wedding. Does anyone even want to find out what's going on? "Murder Mystery 2 sends Nick and Audre on a high-stakes case that finally gives them everything they’ve ever dreamed of: a shot at their detective agency finally becoming successful… and their long-awaited trip to Paris." The film is directed by Jeremy Garelick and stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, returning once again, along with Mark Strong, MĆ©lanie Laurent, Jodie Turner-Smith, Kuhoo Verma, John Kani, and Dany Boon. I'm sorry to say - but this looks even worse than the first movie. So painfully cheesy, so unfunny, it's not for me. ›››

Sundance 2023: The Hilarious 'Theater Camp' is an Instant Classic

Theater Camp Review

The Sundance Film Festival has a long history of showing great mockumentaries, but this might just be the best one of they've ever premiered. Based on the roars of laughter and applause at every screening during the festival, I think most viewers will agree - it's no exaggeration to say that. Theater Camp is a hilarious new "mock doc" created by comedy filmmakers Molly Gordon & Nick Lieberman, based on Lieberman's own 2020 short film of the same name. This time they've made a fun film dedicated to and all about "theater kids". Were you a theater kid growing up? Maybe some of you still are? Theater Camp is mockumentary taking us to the summer camp known as "AdirondACTS", a scrappy theater camp in upstate New York that’s a haven for budding performers. I have no idea how this film didn't win the Audience Award at Sundance, as the reaction from the crowd at my screening seemed vastly more enthusiastic than at any of the other 30+ screenings I attended this year (except for maybe the terrific Fair Play). Everyone had a blast watching this. ›››

Sundance 2023: 'Talk to Me' Should Be the Next Big Horror Breakout

Talk to Me

This Australian indie horror film is one of the most fresh and exciting horror discoveries in a long time - put it on your watchlist right now. Don't even read this review or any others, go watch it when it opens without knowing anything more about it. Talk to Me is screening at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in the iconic Midnight section (where classics like Saw and The Blair Witch Project and The Babadook and Hereditary and Cube all premiered years ago), though it originally premiered in Australia last year. Its initial unveiling was at the 2022 Adelaide Film Festival last October - this is its first appearance since. Despite not being a world premiere this time, it unquestionably deserves to be featured in Sundance's 2023 Midnight line-up - the horror highlight of the festival. A genuinely scary, entirely thrilling, well-made film that might be the big breakout of this year, with an epic franchise setup similar to Saw. I've been telling anyone that loves horror this is the must see of the festival, and I'll continue to spread the good word now that A24 has picked it up. ›››

Sundance 2023: Jonathan Majors is Incredible in 'Magazine Dreams'

Magazine Dreams Review

Obsession can drive a man insane. No doubt about that. This riveting character study explores the intensity that comes with obsession, and how striving for perfection can ruin someone. Magazine Dreams is the second feature film written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Elijah Bynum, following his 2017 film Hot Summer Nights (which came out of SXSW). After screening during the first weekend at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, this has become one of the most talked about films at the entire fest. Everyone has something to say. It's being discussed so much not because it's the best film at the fest, but because it's one of those films that everyone must talk about - whether it's the lead performance from Jonathan Majors, the uncomfortable story it tells, or the brutality and intensity of what happens, or whether or not it's actually a good film, and how could it be better. All of this has been a big part of the conversations over the last week and that's always invigorating because it's better than watching a film that everyone instantly forgets about. ›››

Freaky Trailer for Stephen King Horror Adaptation 'The Boogeyman'

The Boogeyman Trailer

"It's been around forever… Hidden. In the dark." 20th Century Studios has revealed the first official trailer for The Boogeyman, an upcoming Stephen King horror adaptation from the acclaimed genre director Rob Savage (of Host and Dashcam previously). This looks like the most terrifying a-haunted-house-with-kids-in-it update on Poltergeist since the original Poltergeist in 1982. Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her little sister find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it is too late. The scary horror movie stars Madison Hu, Vivien Lyra Blair, Sophie Thatcher, David Dastmalchian, LisaGay Hamilton, and Chris Messina. This was originally going to launch on Hulu, but 20th Century rightfully decided it would be better in theaters - opening in June. Who's ready for some summer horror? Because this looks freaky af!! That upside down spin when she looks under the bed is legit. I'm so down for this, looks outstanding so far. ›››

Brief Teaser for Family Secret Drama 'Goliath' Starring Jessica Sipos

"Your family needs you." "My family needs me? What about when I needed you…" An early teaser trailer is out for a film titled Goliath, a Canadian feature that has been in the works for years already. It's finally set to release on VOD starting in February this year, after first premiering in 2019. When Robin Walker returns home for her father's funeral, she's forced to confront the bitter family she left behind, as well as personal demons; resulting in the reveal of an unsettling secret. "Goliath was the ultimate film school," states the first-time director Luke Villemaire. "We took the trial by fire approach that many first-time filmmakers are forced to endure when struggling to break into the industry. It was incredibly tolling, but I was determined to see this project through, and it has ultimately been a rewarding experience." This was originally shot back in 2016 in Quinte West, Ontoario and nearby areas. The film stars Jessica Sipos, Michelle Mylett, Jon Cor, Shannon Kook, Daniel Maslany, Krista Bridges, & Andrea Roth. Sundance 2023: Randall Park's Funny & Honest Film 'Shortcomings'

Shortcomings Review

Another of my favorite discoveries at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival is a comedy called Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel of the same name. The film is also the feature directorial debut of actor Randall Park, best known as the guy from "Fresh Off the Boat", Always Be My Maybe, and many other supporting character roles (he's also in the MCU). It took him years to finally get this film made, working from a script by another writer, Adrian Tomine, and it's worth the wait. I loved Shortcomings. The film has some of the most "real" characters and dialogue in any of 40+ films I've seen at Sundance this year, following a guy from Berkeley questioning his romantic choices while making even more irrational choices. It's an exploration of what it's like being a young Asian-American male in American society, and it's powerfully honest. I found it incredibly bold for a filmmaker + writer to make a film about their own experiences, and make these flawed characters realistic. No one is perfect; yes everyone gets angry, that's normal. Realizing that is empowering. ›››

Sundance 2023: 'The Disappearance of Shere Hite' is a Revelation

The Disappearance of Shere Hite Review

I am always up for a good documentary that re-establishes the legacy of an important person who has been forgotten in time. This film is one of those extraordinarily vital documentaries that will, when given a proper release sometime in the near future, reset the legacy and re-establish Shere Hite as the feminist hero that she really, truly was. If you're like me, born in the 1980s (or anytime after), you've probably never heard of Shere Hite. She hasn't so much as "disappeared" as been forgotten, buried by criticism and fanaticism and unjust hate. I'm lucky I could watch this documentary film at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and learn all about her, I'm so glad someone decided to tell her story accurately. The Disappearance of Shere Hite is a film about Shere - who she was, what she did, her books, what happened to her after he books achieved an immense amount of fame and popularity. It's a biopic but also much more - a film about progressive ideas, sexuality, society's resistance to sexuality, and how good people can be crushed by a puritanical population. ›››

The official awards for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, held in Park City, Utah every January, were announced this evening with a small ceremony held in person in Utah. The festival continued this week with an at-home online series of viewings in addition to all the in-person projections. It was an especially festive year, so many people were excited to be back in Park City in the snow to enjoy films, and a rather impressive selection - 111 features in total screened at Sundance 2023. I enjoyed so many of them, the quality was at its best. The main winners for 2023 including A Thousand and One (made by A.V. Rockwell) and the doc Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project winning the premium top Grand Jury Prizes. In addition, the festival favorite is Radical (read my glowing review) along with The Persian Version and Beyond Utopia as the Main Competition Audience Award winners. From Pakistan - Official Trailer for 'Joyland' Directed by Saim Sadiq

Joyland Trailer

"Have you ever dance in a theatre before?" One of the best festival discoveries from 2022 is this Pakistani film titled Joyland, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Saim Sadiq. It was submitted by Pakistan for the 95th Academy Awards, but unfortunately it didn't make the cut as one of the five nominated. Joyland first premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, and it also just played at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival this month in their Spotlight section. "Take a first glimpse into the daring, soul searching film that delves deep into the challenging complexities of desire and gender identity through the lens of the Rana Family." The youngest son from a traditional Pakistani family takes a job as a backup dancer in a Bollywood-style burlesque theater, and he quickly becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman, BIba, who runs the show. It stars Ali Junejo, Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq, Sarwat Gilani, Salmaan Peerzada, Sameer Sohail, and Sania Saeed. Or should they just rescue another duck? She wants to adopt, but he doesn't. Will renovating a house and rescuing animals solve their problems? "A comedy about life, love, adulting… and a bunny named Binky." Starring Anna Camp, Joseph Mazzello, Neil Flynn, Ryann Shane, and Nash Grier. Adapted from the book “Enslaved by Ducks” by Bob Tarte. Rye Lane just premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is already set for release (in theaters in the UK / on Hulu in the US) from Searchlight Pictures starting in late March this spring. Another absolutely wonderful animated short film to enjoy. The Kite is a stop-motion animated short made using paper and felt by a filmmaker named Martin Smatana, who is based in Slovakia. The film is a Czech production and was made mostly in Prague. It premiered in 2019 and played at lots of festivals back then, and is finally online for everyone to watch & enjoy. Only 12 minutes! It's worth it! Described as a short film for children about the loss of a loved one, for all ages. "The Kite deals with the issue of death, but it does so in a simple metaphorical and symbolic way on the relationship between the little boy and his grandpa. The Kite explains that none of us are here forever and that all living creatures must die, but also to show that death doesn't mean the end of our journey." "This is not a making of… But more of insight on how the cowboy fell asleep and woke up in Copenhagen." Netlfix has revealed an extensive behind-the-scenes featurette for their new series Copenhagen Cowboy, the latest creation from the mind of Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. We already posted the official trailer last year, and it has been streaming since early January on Netflix. The series introduces a brand new young heroine, Miu, who travels through Copenhagen's criminal netherworld. He adds in this video that the original pitch was to extended his Pusher series, but it's actually about a woman becoming a "superhero." The series stars Angela Bundalovic as Miu, who's joined by Lola Corfixen and Zlatko Buric, plus a big supporting cast featuring Andreas Lykke JĆørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen, Mads BrĆ¼gger, and more. We don't usually get to see lengthy, full-on videos like this when it comes to behind-the-scenes glimpses. I really enjoy seeing Refn work on his neon-drenched sets. Official US Trailer for the Acclaimed Israeli Satire 'Let It Be Morning'

Let It Be Morning Trailer

"Do you know when this is going to end?" Cohen Media Group has revealed a new US trailer for an Israeli indie drama titled Let It Be Morning, finally arriving in US theaters in February. The film first premiered in 2021 at the Cannes Film Festival, playing in the Un Certain Regard section. It later won in 9 awards at the Ophir Awards (Israel's Academy Awards) including for Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress. From Eran Kolirin (director of The Band's Visit) comes a new powerful and timely film Let It Be Morning. In the film, a Palestinian-born Israeli citizen attending his brother’s wedding in an Arab village finds himself unable to return home to Jerusalem when a road is blocked by Israeli soldiers. A bitter sweet comedy about a state of siege, both internal & external and about a man who built a wall around his heart, and how the walls starts coming apart when another, more real wall is built around the village where he was born. Starring Alex Bakri as Sami, Juna Suleiman, Salim Daw, Ehab Salami, Khalifa Natour, and Izabel Ramadan. Looks like another good film from Israel addressing their problems and bad relationship with Palestinians. ›››

Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word "SHAZAM!," is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam, played again by Zachary Levi. In this next one he will confront Hespera & Kalypso, daughters of the Greek god Atlas, while introducing us to an entire Shazam! family of (young) heroes. In addition to Levi, the new cast features Helen Mirren as Hespera, and Lucy Liu as Kalypso, Rachel Zegler, Meagan Good, Grace Fulton, and Marta Milans; with Djimon Hounsou, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer returning from the first one. This looks like a much darker sequel, though it still seems like one big CGI fest with more than half this trailer being full CGI scenes. That big dragon looks cool, and the rest of it seems entertaining. ›››

Sundance 2023: A Beautiful Story of Divers in 'The Deepest Breath'

The Deepest Breath Review

I did not know what I was getting into with The Deepest Breath. I did not know I was about to watch one of my favorite documentaries of the year. I went on a journey with all these people and can never forget this experience. The Deepest Breath is a extraordinary and awe-inspiring work of cinematic art. I was lucky to attend the world premiere screening at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival of this A24 / Netflix co-production, directed by Irish filmmaker Laura McGann. This exceptional documentary film is this year's Fire of Love (nominated for an Oscar!) – both films follow the beautiful story of a couple, examining their lives living on the edge and doing something radical that few other people on this planet do. The Deepest Breath is about a freediving couple and the incredibly dangerous sport of freediving - the act of holding your breath for long periods of time while diving or swimming. It moved me beyond words, I was wiping away tears by the end. ›››

Mysterious Indie Sci-Fi Film 'TwoTwo' Trailer Starring Morgan Makana

TwoTwo Trailer

"You can't just pluck people out of their lives and then throw them back in with nothing." Good Deed Ent. has revealed an official trailer for a low budget indie sci-fi called TwoTwo, the latest from a filmmaker called Jun Hoskulds. This premiered at a few small festivals last year and will be out on VOD in February for anyone to watch. David had the dream life… Good education, suit-and-tie job in the corporate world, an apartment with a view. His life collapses when he loses his job. He randomly encounters a homeless man who makes David an offer: to "give it all up, in order to find it all over again," in a mostly similar, but much better, parallel universe. Intrigued? "TwoTwo is a fantasy film, a metaphor about life, purpose, connecting, spirituality, love, creativity, parallel universes, and the unseen presence of a power always watching." The film stars Joel Ballard as David, Morgan Makana as the woman called "22", Kenneth Best, and P.K. Simone. The acting in here is really bad, and it looks like the sci-fi concept is much bigger than the budget. ›››

Summer Camp Slasher Comedy 'She Came from the Woods' Trailer

She Came from the Woods

"Let's try not to die tonight." Mainframe Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled She Came from the Woods, opening in limited US theaters starting in February soon. It first premiered at FrightFest last year, but didn't hit any other fests in the fall. In this ode to '80s slasher horror, a group of dumb camp counselors accidentally unleash a decades' old evil on the last night of summer camp. As the mayhem and madness turn bloody, the staff of "Camp Briarbrook" are forced to confront what stories are worth telling and what secrets worth keeping. The horror comedy stars Cara Buono (from Stranger Things), William Sadler (Bill & Ted), Spencer List, Clare Foley, Michael Park, Tyler Elliot Burke, Adam Weppler, Ehad Berisha, Giselle Torres, and Dań Leahy. This looks, ahem, campy and not that scary but fun, another throwback riff on 1980s horror - there's always more of these to watch. Have a look. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Daisy Jones & The Six'- A 1970s Rock Band Series

Daisy Jones & The Six Trailer

"You write songs about who you wish you were, not who you are." Prime Video has revealed a new official trailer for a streaming series coming this March titled Daisy Jones & The Six, about a (fictional) rock band from the 1970s. It's made by director James Ponsoldt and the writers behind 500 Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now. The series follows the rise of rock band Daisy Jones and The Six through the '70s LA music scene on their quest for worldwide icon status. While the story is presented in a documentary style, including background interviews with the band, this is an entirely fictional story that captures the essence of creativity in the erratic, wild world of the 1970s. "It's time to hear the real story." Daisy Jones & The Six stars Riley Keough as the titular Daisy, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Nabiyah Be, Will Harrison, Josh Whitehouse, Sebastian Chacon, and Tom Wright. This looks damn good! The faux documentary style makes it even more intriguing, they really went all out telling this band's story. ›››

Sundance 2023: 'Radical' Reminds Us of the Great Power of Teachers

Radical Review

Everyone remembers that one teacher they had growing up that changed their lives. There is always at least one teacher who goes above and beyond, who approaches teaching as something more than just a job, or a chance to make kids remember some facts. My favorite teacher growing up was one named Mrs. Richards. Radical is a remarkable film from Mexico made by a filmmaker named Christopher Zalla, best known for his Sundance 2007 film Padre Nuestro before (I actually watched this one at Sundance and reviewed it way back then). He returns to Sundance again 16 years later to premiere his latest film, based on a true story about a "radical" Mexican teacher in a small border town called Matamoros (see Google Maps). Going into this film, I was initially expecting a light-hearted comedy, about kids feuding with their teacher. What I was not expecting was to discover a generous, warm-hearted, emotional story about a teacher and his students working together to overcome adversity and carelessness. Education matters, but teachers matter the most. ›››

Sundance 2023: The Atrocious, Annoying Awkwardness of 'Cat Person'

Cat Person Review

Is this what dating is really like these days?! I can't believe it. I don't want to believe it. This cannot be real. Can it…?? I'm not one to be extra negative about a film, but I must get this off my chest. Cat Person is bad, really bad. It's one of the worst films I've seen at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, not necessarily because the filmmaking is bad, but because the entire film is misguided. I didn't think they could extend the cringe and awkwardness of the original story (from New Yorker) this much and make it even more awkward to sit through. But somehow they did… It's such an uncomfortable watch. The film only features annoying idiotic cringe for two hours with absolutely nothing interesting or worthwhile to add or explore or consider or think about. I am shocked by how much of a mess this film is. It's not really about toxic masculinity, it's actually about a young woman who keeps making unbelievably stupid choices and never learning a thing from them. Her best friend is constantly trying to keep her from making mistakes, but she never listens to her… Ever. ›››

Meet Huesera in Mexican Horror 'Huesera: The Bone Woman' Trailer

Huesera: The Bone Woman Trailer

"When you become a mother, you feel like you are split in two." XYZ Films has revealed the official trailer for the indie Mexican horror titled Huesera: The Bone Woman, opening in US theaters this February. It first premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year and has been earning rave reviews at other fests including NeuchĆ¢tel, Bucheon, Edinburgh, Bergen, Fantastic Fest, and Sitges. Huesera follows the story of Valeria, a young woman expecting her first child who becomes cursed by a sinister entity. Plunged into a terrifying and dangerous world, a group of witches emerge as her only hope for safety and salvation, but not without grave risk. Natalia SoliĆ”n stars as Valeria, with a cast including Alfonso Dosal, Mayra Batalla, Mercedes HernĆ”ndez, AĆda LĆ³pez, and Martha Claudia Moreno. This looks insanely scary once the trailer gets going, lots of freaky footage in that second half! That part of the crib breaking viscerally like a bone is just terrifying. Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out

"If anything, he's the smartest person in this stupid town." Visit Films has revealed an official trailer for the indie sci-fi comedy titled Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out. How's that for a film name! Did it get your attention? This just premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival playing in the "Kids" section of the fest, and it's still seeking a distribution deal. Miserable after her family moves to a small town, a teenage aspiring journalist named Itsy befriends Calvin, her strange, space-obsessed neighbor who believes his parents were abducted by aliens, and joins him on his journey to find them. As an up-and-coming journalist, Itsy decides to write an exposĆ©, but she discovers much more about him. It stars Emma Tremblay, Jacob Buster, Will Forte, Elizabeth Mitchell, Kenneth Cummins, and Matt Biedel. I'm curious to see this! I like the trailer, there's some good lines in here. I'm just wondering if they actually will find aliens! I hope the twist isn't that they were just taken by a government organization or something. ›››

Enjoy This 'Look Inside' Featurette for Shyamalan's 'Knock at the Cabin'

Knock at the Cabin Featurette

"I'm very drawn to stories of confinement…" Universal has revealed a behind-the-scenes featurette for M. Night Shyamalan's next new thriller Knock at the Cabin, opening in theaters in just a few more weeks. It's based on a book by Paul Tremblay, about a family who is told the apocalypse is coming and they must "make an unthinkable choice" but they have no connection to the outside world and can't tell if it's all real or not. This video gives us a look at Shyamalan's process and filming on the set. Knock at the Cabin stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, newcomer Kristen Cui, Abby Quinn, and Rupert Grint. It's always nice to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse, especially with Shyamalan. I wish there was more footage of the actual sets, but perhaps they're afraid of spoilers. I am so into this concept, I can't wait to find out what's going on and what choice(s) they make in the end. We'll know the answers soon. ›››

Another Unfunny Teaser for Netflix's Film 'You People' with Jonah Hill

You People Teaser

"I am going to give it everything I have." Netflix has revealed another short teaser trailer for You People, the comedy from the creator / writer of "Black-ish" - Kenya Barris. It's out on Netflix for streaming later this week, hence the new teaser clip debuting now. Though strangely this isn't that funny of a clip, but it might make a few people laugh. A new couple and their very different families find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations & generational differences in this comedy from Barris. Jonah Hill and Lauren London star as the main couple, Ezra and Amira, who try to introduce their families to each other with disastrous results. Also starring Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny, Sam Jay, Elliott Gould, Travis Bennett, Molly Gordon, Rhea Perlman, Deon Cole, Andrea Savage, and Mike Epps. This doesn't seem like it'll be the funniest comedy, but Netflix is giving it a strong push for the opening weekend anyway. Check out the teaser below. ›››

Sundance 2023: Meet the Vuvv in Sci-Fi 'Landscape with Invisible Hand'

Landscape with Invisible Hand Review

Let's try to envision a scenario on this planet where aliens suddenly arrive, but instead of violently enslaving humanity and eating all of them, they just use cutthroat capitalism to enslave everyone, er, peacefully. No violence necessary, just obedience. Would our world look any different than it does right now? Probably not. Landscape with Invisible Hand plays with this exact concept, adapting the novella by M.T. Anderson into a rather funky sci-fi film. This is easily one of the most ambitious, high concept sci-fi projects I've ever seen at the Sundance Film Festival, produced as a "studio movie" by MGM and Brad Pitt's Plan B. Yet it fits right in at Sundance, somehow, because it's all about integrity in art and rejecting big money offers in order to continue making something that stays true to the purity of artistic expression. It's not an instant favorite, unfortunately, but it is fascinating and entertaining in an especially unique way. Those sneaky, slimy Vuvv. ›››

New Official Trailer for Korean Revenge Series 'The Glory' from Netflix

The Glory Trailer

"I hope that you still want to see me dance, Yeon-jin." Revenge is always intense!! Netflix has revealed a new official trailer for Part 2 of their streaming series The Glory from Korea. Part 1 of this series is already streaming, it launched in late December a few weeks ago. This almost sounds like one of Park Chan-wook's revenge movies. A young woman, bullied to the point of deciding to drop out of school, plans the best way to get revenge. After becoming a primary school teacher, she takes in the son of the man who tormented her the most to enact her vengeance. "From now on, every single day will be a nightmare. They’ll be provocative and terrifying. You can't stop me or make me disappear." Starring Song Hye-kyo, Lee Do-hyun, Lim Ji-yeon, Yeom Hye-ran, Park Sung-hoon, and Jung Sung-il. Seems like it's almost a cathartic revenge story, about a woman getting back at everyone in a very meticulous, carefully planned way. "As Dong-eun's plan begins to unfold, the perpetrators have no idea what’s coming to them." It looks like an intense thriller. ›››

Epic Second Trailer for 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves'

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Trailer

"How are we going to pull THIS off?" "We're gonna need a team…" Paramount Pictures has revealed the second official trailer for the epic new live-action Dungeons & Dragons movie, officially titled Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Opening in theaters in March, this looks like it will be worth a watch on the big screen after all. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure. As expected, but still! The ensemble cast features Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, RegĆ©-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant. Sundance 2023: Chloe Domont's 'Fair Play' is an Extraordinary Thriller

Fair Play

It is time for men get out of the way of women. One of the best thrillers at Sundance this year is Fair Play, the feature film debut of filmmaker Chloe Domont. Sitting through this screening at Sundance 2023 was an experience of its own. It was the second screening (not even the first premiere!) and the audience still went nuts for it. They gave it two standing ovations at the end, shouting "bravo! bravo!" as the filmmaker & actors took the stage. And this was genuine applause, deserving enthusiastic praise for a film that rocked me to my core. The best part was listening to all of the audible gasps and uncomfortable shifting as certain scenes play out and the story unfolds, everyone's rapt attention fixated on the screen. Step out of the way Uncut Gems, Fair Play has entered the room. And she isn't going to take any shit anymore. This film deserves to be talked about and become a huge hit, shoving Gordon Gecko out of the way while proclaiming "it's my time now." ›››

Sundance 2023: 'Deep Rising' is a Reminder to Protect Our Oceans

Deep Rising Doc Review

We must take better care of this planet. We must change our ways and save what we can before it's too late. We must stop treating this planet like an endless mine to make money from. This excellent documentary is a potent reminder we must do more to protect our planet and its natural resources from greedy investors and rich schmucks who simply can't give up their addiction to profiting off of Earth's offerings. Doc filmmaker Matthieu Rytz returns to Sundance (following his 2018 doc Anote's Ark) with his latest feature film titled Deep Rising, a documentary about a precious resource hidden at the bottom of the ocean. I'm always on the hunt for splendid documentaries at Sundance, and this is one of my favorites so far. Not only is it about something important, something I didn't know anything about before watching, but it's an engaging doc in every way. Featuring a score by Ɠlafur Arnalds, it's hard not to feel moved by this film and everything it's trying to tell us and remind us – this planet is a special place and we need to stop destroying the ecosystem. ›››

Watch: Fascinating Video Explores 'The Future of The 1920s' Design

The Future of The 1920s

Let's take a trip into the past, to journey into the future. I am a sci-fi geek and I've always loved spaceship designs and future technology and imagining what it's like to be in a time where we can travel to planets (or even galaxies). This video called The Future of The 1920s examines what it was like to imagine the future in the 1920s. It features drawings and designs created by people living in the 20s, just after "The Great War" and before the next one, wondering what the future might be like. Most of it is pulled from an old magazine called "Science And Invention." They weren't interested in leaving Earth, more into improving livability. The narrator explains the 1920s "took place in the immediate aftermath of a massive, destructive war, and both [the 50s] carried an optimism for the future. The difference was science fiction was not as mainstream… so it didn't quite fully develop a unique look." Just some visual inspiration and vintage sci-fi imagery to peruse. ›››

First Quick Tease for 'A Spy Among Friends' Series with Guy Pearce

A Spy Among Friends Teaser

"He works for the Russians. He has lied to you, and he has used you." MGM+ has revealed a quick first look teaser trailer for their upcoming British spy series titled A Spy Among Friends, arriving for streaming in March in a few more months. The service formerly known as Epix has re-branded as MGM+, and they're getting preparing a big line-up this spring. "The epic true story of Kim Philby, the Cold War's most infamous spy, from the 'master storyteller' and author of Prisoners of the Castle." Yes it's an adaptation of the book of the same name. The British mini-series that stars Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, two real-life 1960s British spies who, despite their opposing allegiances, developed a life-long friendship. This reminds me a bit of the other British spy film The Courier (aka Ironbark) from a few years ago. The series also stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Adrian Edmondson, Stephen Kunken, Nicholas Rowe, and Anastasia Hille. I'm looking forward to seeing more footage from this before it's out to watch. ›››

Judd Hirsch Gets an iPhone in Indie Comedy Film 'iMordecai' Trailer

iMordecai Trailer

"It's nice to be old. It's nice to have fun with no buttons." Greenwich Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled iMordecai, which is an amusing title for this film about a cranky old timer whose life is changed when he gets a new iPhone. How's that for a story? This initially premiered at the 2022 Naples Film Festival last year, and is set in Florida. A holocaust survivor born and raised in a different time, must now face the realities of modern world. when confronted with an unfamiliar object, an iPhone will Mordecai be able to fit into a world that has changed so much around him? Starring the wonderful actor Judd Hirsch (he's also in The Fabelmans) as Mordecai, along with Sean Astin, Carol Kane, Nick Puga, and Azia Dinea Hale. First Look Teaser for Eco Doc 'Deep Rising' Narrated by Jason Momoa

Deep Rising Doc Trailer

"4000 meters down on the ocean floor, another energy revolution is underway." A festival teaser is out for a documentary film titled Deep Rising, one of our most anticipated premieres at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. It's debuting in the Premieres section, an important doc about climate change and environmental destruction. The festival description sets it up: The fate of the planet's last untouched wilderness, the deep ocean, is under threat as a secretive organization is about to allow massive extraction of seabed metals to address the world's energy crisis. It's actually about another environmental crisis brewing, with companies ready to mine unique "polymetallic nodules" that are sitting at the bottom of the ocean, specifically a huge area of the Pacific Ocean. The doc is narrated by Jason Momoa, who talks us through why they're ever so important, what's going on with them and companies trying to get at them, and why we should care. This is one doc to keep an eye on as it premieres at Sundance, I've got a good feeling it's going to be worth a watch. ›››
