The story of a lonely bushwoman who struggles to raise her children and run the family farm while her husband is away. In the Snowy Mountains, heavily pregnant Molly Johnson is pushed to her limits. With the burden of a dark secret and intruders to her property, Molly does whatever it takes to protect her children. Starring actress Leah Purcell as Molly Johnson, who also wrote and directed the film, along with Rob Collins, Sam Reid, Jessica De Gouw, Benedict Hardie, Harry Greenwood, Tony Cogin, Nicholas Hope, Maggie Dence, and Bruce Spence. This is a fantastic new trailer, better than I was expecting, with an evocative score to build up the tension as it plays out. You'll definitely want to watch this film the end of it. ›››

Canadian Wilderness Survival Series 'Keep Breathing' Official Trailer

"There's nobody coming for you… because nobody cares about you." Ouch. Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a new survival series titled Keep Breathing, formerly known as simply Breathe. When a small plane crashes in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, a lone survivor must battle the elements — and her personal demons— to stay alive. The series stars Melissa Barrera as Liv, a New York lawyer who has to figure out how to survive. I'm not sure if this is based on a true story, it doesn't mention it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's inspired by a true story about someone surviving. It was filmed up in the forests of British Columbia, and in Vancouver. In addition to Barrera, the cast includes Joselyn Picard, Jeff Wilbusch, Juan Pablo Espinosa, Austin Stowell, and Florencia Lozano. Ooh this series looks like it might be good, not only the survival aspects but the way it explores her trauma and her struggles throughout her life. ›››

This is finally getting a US release after two years of waiting. This looks like an epic sci-fi thriller, and the title is an extension of the French version which is just The Last Journey. The red moon threatens our existence on earth. Our only hope is the enigmatic Paul WR, the most talented astronaut of its generation. But few hours before the start of the Great mission, Paul disappeared. There's all kinds of strange and interesting things going on in this, almost like a dusty, post-apocalyptic Jean-Pierre Jeunet meets Luc Besson kind of film. The cast includes Hugo Becker as Paul W.R., with Jean Reno, Paul Hamy, & Lya Oussadit-Lessert. It also won Best Film at the Sitges Film Festival - looks quite good. ›››

Described as: "a neon-tinged genre-bender that gives provocative form to the overwhelming feminine fury coursing through modern life, Medusa dares us not to look away." Stray was shot in Istanbul, this one in a town called Kars (see Google Maps) on the east side of the country. And they still do all the time. But this is still worth examining in closer detail. This video essay is from Thomas Flight, a popular YouTuber creating videos about cinema. It's titled "The Art Movement That Changed Film Forever", but it's really about German Expressionism - and how this cinema movement still influences films today. Obviously Flight was inpsired by the cinematography in Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth, and wanted to make this video about why it looks this way. He references three iconic films from the 1920s: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, and Metropolis; then goes on to connect how this distinct visual style is still evident in modern films from Blade Runner (both of them) to The Humans last year. This one is formerly known as The Uncanny. RLJE Films has posted this trailer for an indie horror thriller titled They Live in the Grey, which already premiered on Shudder earlier this year. We're just catching up with this one now as they prepare for a VOD / DVD release this summer. The story follows Claire who, while investigating a child abuse case, discovers that the family is being tormented by a supernatural entity. In order to save the family, she must confront her own fears and use her emerging clairvoyance to stop the malevolent force. The film stars Michelle Krusiec, Ken Kirby, and Madelyn Grace. It didn't get great reviews, but it still looks chilling. "The film's title is a brilliant play on the turmoil both the living and dead undergo during the two-hour runtime." Watch: These Adorable 'Magical Cat' Animated Vignettes Are Delightful

"There he is, a magical cat. Everybody loves him, he's a magical cat!!" Have you met the Magical Cat? Isn't he just the best!! The two animators who run a small studio called Threadwood have been creating these fun "Magical Cat" videos over the last few years and posting them online for everyone to enjoy. The first one debuted in April 2020, likely made out of pandemic lockdown boredom. But they've continued on for two years and they're getting even better. Now they make them between bigger projects "to loosen up and enjoy animation" again. Magical Cat is a claymation series of cat vignettes made by animators Scott DaRos and Alexis Deprey. Sadly their kitty passed away last year. In Episode 8 they write: "Magical Cat is based on our cat who passed recently. Those are his coos and purrs in the audio." Aww. He seems like a nice person, doesn't he? Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for the French-German indie drama Peter von Kant, one of the latest features from prolific French filmmaker François Ozon. This first premiered at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Based on the Rainer Werner Fassbinder cult play, The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, François Ozon’s unique retelling finds "Peter von Kant", a successful, famous director (obviously RWF), who lives with his assistant Karl, whom he likes to mistreat and humiliate. Through the great actress Sidonie, he meets and falls in love with Amir, a handsome young man of modest means. He offers to share his apartment and help Amir get into the world of cinema. Beyond that, there's not much more to this. The cast features Denis Ménochet as von Kant, Isabelle Adjani, Khalil Gharbia, Hanna Schygulla, Stéfan Crépon, and Aminthe Audiard. I saw this film at Berlinale and it's dismal, a waste of time in every way. Don't watch it unless you're a major Fassbinder fan. ›››

There are many filmmakers who have endless opportunities regardless of the success of their films. There are also just as many filmmakers who find it extremely difficult to "move up the ladder" regardless of how well-received and financially profitable their projects end up. Despite his inconsistency, I consider Scott Derrickson an example of the latter. From The Exorcism of Emily Rose to Sinister, not forgetting Marvel's Doctor Strange or his 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, it's strange that a director so talented & capable of transforming low budgets into visually immersive movies doesn't have more chances to shine. Final Official Korean Trailer for Park Chan-wook's 'Decision to Leave'

"Bring me the head of that kind detective." CJ Entertainment has revealed another official "main" trailer for Decision to Leave, the latest film from acclaimed Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. This one premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where Park Chan-wook won the Best Director prize (seen in the photo below the trailer). It was my favorite film of this year's festival, an impeccably made intriguing story of love and murder. A detective investigating a death in the mountains meets the dead man's mysterious wife in the course of his dogged sleuthing. It's not as shocking or as crazy as Park's previous films, but it's still a remarkable film anyway. Starring Tang Wei, Park Hae-il, Go Kyung-Pyo, and Lee Jung-Hyun. I wrote in my Cannes review: "More than a detective story about solving crimes, Decision to Leave is a masterful, exquisite romance that makes your heart beat faster." This recently premiered at the 2022 Overlook Film Festival this month, a good horror festival to show a film like this. It's described as a "Faustian morality tale" from a script by Jewish-Ukrainian writer Yuri Baranovsky. Elijah attends a self-help retreat with his rockstar girlfriend Lyn, unaware that the enigmatic doctor, Dr. Frost played by Frederick Stuart, who runs the estate has summoned him here to settle a generations-old supernatural debt. The film stars J. Quinton Johnson as Elijah, with Emma Fitzpatrick, Salvador Chacon, Angela Gulner, and Freddy Douglas. We posted a trailer for this a few weeks ago, but this teaser has even better footage. During the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), Taoists try to take a mysterious holy sword. Meanwhile in present day (in 2022), aliens appear on Earth. A time door soon connects the late Goryeo period and the present day. The two parties cross paths when a time-traveling portal opens, causing chaos and confusion. The science fiction action fantasy features a cast including Ryu Jun-yeol as a master swordsman, Kim Tae-ri as "a woman who shoots thunder", Kim Woo-bin, So Ji-seob, Yum Jung-ah, Kim Eui-eung, Lee Ha-nee, and Jo Woo-jin. It was shot all together but will be released in two sequential parts, instead of one big movie, which means there's going to be a lot going on in this. I think this looks crazy entertaining! New Trailer for 'My Old School' Docu-Drama Starring Alan Cumming

"Hiding in plain sight…" An official trailer has arrived for an intriguing documentary film titled My Old School, recalling a stranger-than-fiction story about a guy who pretend to be a school student in the 1990s in Scotland. This first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and will be playing in select theaters this July. Alan Cumming stars in this since the actual guy who the story is about, the "real" Brandon Lee (not related to the actor), didn't want to be shown. He's interviewed and his voice is in this, but Cumming "plays" him even though it's a doc with him retelling his story of what happened. Cumming is involved because back in the 90s he tried to make an indie film about this, but it fell apart. Now years later they've made this doc and it's utterly fascinating. In 1993, a "16-year-old" kid named Brandon Lee enrolled at Bearsden Academy, a secondary school in a well-to-do suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. What followed over the next two years became the stuff of legend. You have to hear all the stories, and make up your own mind. ›››

Official Trailer for Outstanding Documentary 'The Territory' from Brazil

"I believe the Amazon is the heart, not just of Brazil, but the whole world." National Geographic Films has revealed an official trailer for The Territory, an incredible documentary film about an Indigenous tribe in Brazil fighting to defend their territory from invading "farmers" from the cities. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's one of the best from the fest - it's a phenomenal film. When a network of Brazilian farmers seizes a protected area of the Amazon rainforest, a young Indigenous leader and his mentor must fight back in defense of the land and an uncontacted group living deep within the forest. The film follows the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau people, with some footage shot by the tribe members and their own videographer (which is awesome btw!!). The film opens in August in theaters in the US, complete with a a multiyear impact campaign will launch in support of Indigenous land defenders across the Amazon. It won tons of awards at festivals so far, and is produced by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. Best friends Mimmi and Rönkkö work after school at a food court smoothie kiosk, swapping stories of their frustrations and expectations regarding love and sex. "Writers Daniela Hakulinen & Ilona Ahti consistently present the film's teen protagonists as complex individuals, while director Alli Haapasalo, rather than aestheticizing the girls' femininity, vibrantly depicts their trials and tribulations through their own eyes." This stars Aamu Milonoff, Eleonoora Kauhanen, and Linnea Leino. This new music film explores the creative relationship and songs from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' latest two studio albums, "Ghosteen" and "Carnage". It premiered at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and already opened first in theaters back in May. The doc will be streaming on Mubi's platform this summer. In this document of their first ever performances of these albums, filmed in spring 2021 ahead of the UK tour, we observe the two, accompanied by singers and string quartet, as they nurture each song into existence. The film features a special appearance by close friend and long-term collaborator, Marianne Faithfull. This trailer includes a few scenes where they explain how they set reset points every year. Paapa Essiedu stars as George, who has a personal stake in this when his wife & child are killed in a tragic accident, and he hopes this might help save them. The cast includes Tom Burke, Anjli Mohindra, Caroline Quentin, Charly Clive, Rudi Dharmalingam, Lorn Macdonald, Vinette Robinson, and Brian Gleeson. This is a cool concept and this trailer promises plenty of action, I just hope it has a scale that is befitting the concept and not limited to the usual made-for-TV scope. Vader Goes to the Beach in 'Lego Star Wars Summer Vacation' Trailer

"The trip isn't about the destination… it's about the journey." Disney has revealed an official trailer for the new Star Wars LEGO special titled LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation. Yes, this is real, and yes, it's ridiculous, but all of the LEGO specials made by Disney have been this wacky and fun and absurd. Following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with Rose, Rey, Finn, Poe, and Chewbacca looking to relax in the summer sun after their fateful battle with Emperor Palpatine. The galaxy's heroes need a vacation badly, but, as many family vacations often turn out, things don't go according to plan. Featuring the voices of "Weird Al" Yankovic, Yvette Nicole Brown, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and returning cast members from previous "LEGO Star Wars" specials, along with "Weird Al's" new original song, Scarif Beach Party. Looks like so much fun! I like that it's set after Rise of Skywalker, because it provides some context even though it's odd they're escaping war to go to a beach. Enjoy anyway. ›››

Zoey Deutch Desires Social Media Fame in 'Not Okay' Teaser Trailer

"Be careful what you f*!%$#g wish for." Searchlight Pictures has revealed the initial teaser trailer for an indie film titled Not Okay, a cautionary tale about social media fame and fortune. Written and directed by actress Quinn Shephard (who also directed Blame a few years back), the film stars Zoey Deutch as Danni, who, as she says in this trailer, wants to be "noticed so badly" that she goes too far trying to get attention. A misguided young woman, desperate for friends and fame, fakes a trip to Paris to update her social media presence. A terrifying incident takes place in the real world which becomes a part of the imaginary trip and offers all she wanted. This trailer reveals terrorist attacks in Paris are what she pretends to have survived. Eeesh, definitely "not okay." Deutch stars with Dylan O'Brien, Mia Isaac, Embeth Davidtz, Brennan Brown, Karan Soni, and Sarah Yarkin. There's barely 60 seconds of footage in here, but I'm certainly curious. We can always use more honest social media takedown films because is still as bad as ever on there. ›››

New 'The Earth Needs More Elf Fans' Promo for 'The Rings of Power'

"You know that feeling of finally find your people? So do we." Amazon has revealed a new "lifestyle" promo video for Prime Video that is all about their upcoming Lord of the Rings series. It's not specifically a preview for the series (and doesn't feature new footage) but it is clearly promoting the series anyway. The Rings of Power is due to premiere on Amazon's Prime Video in September in just a few more months, with a second season already in production. "Fandom has no limit at Prime Video. See Where it takes you. Because Prime Video offers your favorite entertainment all in one place, fans can follow their passions deeper— from series to books to costumes and more." The promo video focuses on a boy who begins reading Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings book and becomes a huge fan of the Elves, deciding to dress up and attend a theatrical premiere of the Rings of Power series. I want to go, too!! It's a call back to the glorious days of the LOTR fandom in the early 2000s, hoping that they'll get all these people back to watch the incredibly expensive new LOTR series when it airs this fall.
