Reincarnation Thriller 'Chariot' Trailer with Rosa Salazar & Malkovich

"Tell me - do you enjoy existing?" Damn, what a question. Saban Films has released an official trailer for the film Chariot, an intriguing psychological thriller mixed with a bit of sci-fi. A story about a corporation and a doctor, played by John Malkovich, that oversees the process of reincarnation, and a young man named Harrison who becomes a glitch in the system when he encounters a woman he loved in a previous life. That concept initially makes me think of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind along with that Transcendence movie, though involving reincarnation and not A.I. this time. Another description states the film is a "dark and twisted thriller." Thomas Mann stars with Rosa Salazar, plus Scout Taylor Compton, Vernon Davis, Chris Mullinax, Shane West, and Malkovich. I'm not really sure what to make of this - could be good, but could also be bad, as there doesn't seem to be enough of a clear vision for this film to really work. ›››

As we get closer and closer to the Academy Awards this year (coming up on March 28th), the next important set of winners have been revealed. The 28th annual SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild Awards) honor the greatest performances from 2021, as chosen by other actors which means this is one of the most definitive lists of the best performances. Dumbledore knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is trying to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Newt to lead a team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old & new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. Jude Law stars in this one as a "younger" Albus Dumbledore, and Mads Mikkelsen co-stars as Gellert Grindelwald. We posted the first trailer for this way back in 2020, and after numerous delays it's finally set to open in April this year. Yeah, it's true, sh_t does happen. This mesmerizing Czech short film is a superbly creative, quirky, amusing animation creation that is worth your time. Sh_t Happens was made as a graduation project by animation filmmakers Michaela Mihályi & David Stumpf. It premiered in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival, then stopped by a bunch of other fests, including Sundance, L'Étrange, and the Brussels Animation Film Festival. It's set at apartment building full of self centered inhabitants. Utterly exhausted caretaker and his sexually frustrated wife. Widowed deer drowning his sorrows in loads of alcohol. While trying to cope with problems, they find themselves in a hard to solve triangle asking for absurd and irrational solutions. The consequences can easily become permanent, sometimes maybe too permanent. I always enjoy off-beat animation like this, so absurdly creative and alluring. "You put peace out in the world, you get peace back." Take a look at this. Sony has quietly released a little viral marketing ad for an action movie arriving his summer called Bullet Train. Yes, it's set on a bullet train, which almost makes me feel like we're in the 90s waiting for the next kick ass train action movie. The ad is for a fictional train line in Japan called "Nippon Speed Line" or NSL, with some stunning footage of the train in Japan. It ends with a shot of a beat up Brad Pitt taking a rest in what looks like a slight break in the action. The plot involves five assassins aboard this train who discover their missions all have something in common. "Join us for a truly unforgettable experience with a new way to travel: tranquil, comfortable, and fast." The ad also hints that the full trailer for Bullet Train is debuting on March 2nd, an the NSL website has a huge countdown time on it, too. Must Watch: This Teaser for a New Sci-Fi Project Called 'The Fringe'

Whoaaaa! This looks awesome. There's a badass new project in the works from the two talented filmmakers Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, best known for turning their short into a feature film called Prospect (which we highly, highly recommend watching - it's on Hulu now). Their latest idea is called The Fringe, and it's essentially a new "sci-fi, cinematic universe" set in space following scavengers or freelancers called Drifters: miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers, mercenaries, gastrotechs. They've decided to dip into NFTs to try "new model of film financing that will put full creative control back into the hands of the film's artistic team." The NFT collection will be comprised of in-world characters called Drifters. "The NFT project will be an immersive narrative experience that will introduce fans to the universe in novel ways, creating a portal into the world’s lore via the art and other integrated mediums like an in-world compendium." It's finally getting a theatrical release in the US starting at the end of April this year. Pompo the Cinephile (originally 映画大好きポンポさん) is a rollicking, exuberant ode to the power of the movies, and the joys and heartbreak of the creative process, as a new director and his team devote their lives to the pursuit of a "masterpiece." Fueled by the excitement from the film's domestic release in Japan, a crowdfunding campaign to create a 35mm print of the feature achieved its fundraising goals of ¥10,000,000 in just eleven days. Featuring the voices of Konomi Kohara, Hiroya Shimizu, and Akio Ôtsuka. It is a bit of a challenge for most anime to find a bigger audience in the US (unless it's Ghibli or Ponoc or Shinkai or Hosoda) but this kind of story about making movies is exactly the kind that can break out here. Stavanger is a beautiful place located on the west coast of Norway, and in recent years has become a destination for many of these giant, ugly ships. "It takes away the sun, it takes away the air. Kaptan stars as Rabiye Kurnaz, joined by Alexander Scheer, Charly Hübner, Nazmi Kirik, Sevda Polat, Abdullah Emre Öztürk, and Safak Sengül. Apple is Re-Releasing Best Picture Nominee 'CODA' Back in Theaters

Good news for one of the best films of 2021! Sian Heder's CODA is returning to theaters again this weekend - starting on February 25th. Apple picked up the film after its rapturous premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival last year, and originally opened the film in theaters in the fall. After a successful theatrical run and Apple TV+ streaming debut, they're releasing CODA back into theaters again - for free. CODA (which stands for Child of Deaf Adults) also picked up a total of three (!!) Academy Award nominations this year - for Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur) and Best Picture. I am so happy for this film! I fell hard for it at Sundance last year (read my review) and I've been championing it ever since. This re-release is an obvious push for more attention during this Oscar season, but it's also a great way to get more people to see this wonderful film. New technologies are transforming a 19th-century watchmaking town in Switzerland. Josephine, a young factory worker, produces the unrest wheel, swinging in the heart of the mechanical watch. Exposed to new ways of organizing money, time and labour, she gets involved with the local movement of the anarchist watchmakers, where she meets a Russian traveller. The director "continues to refine his style, which combines meticulous composition – both in his characteristic wide shots as well as in the extreme close-ups celebrating manual labour – with a distinct political stance." Berlinale 2022: 'Nelly & Nadine' is a Touching Doc Film About History

"Nothing is real until it’s socially expressed." Telling stories about people long gone can change the world. One of the best documentaries from the 2022 Berlin Film Festival is this discovery - Nelly & Nadine made by Swedish filmmaker Magnus Gertten. The film delves into World War II history to tell the story of two women who met at a concentration camp during the war and fell in love, spending their lives together in Venezuela after their camp was liberated. It's a remarkable story, not only that they could find each other and fall in love, but that they made it out alive and were able to live together after the war. It's a wonderfully touching film, sensitive and compassionate as it explores their story and connects with relatives that are still alive today. Even though it's far from perfect, there's no way this film won't move you to tears at some point or another. And these kind of films are the ones that will stay with you far beyond all the film festival buzz. ›››

Svetla, a widow who lost her job recently is living next to the Bulgarian-Turkish border. There are many cases of refugees in her village due to it's location. One day she meets a refugee from Africa and this changes her life. It's a story about love, but also a story about fear. The film stars Svetlana Yancheva, Michael Flemming, Kristina Yaneva, and Ivan Savov. It is also Bulgaria's submission to the 2022 Academy Awards, but it didn't end up with a nomination this year. Watch: Adorable Animated Short 'Crush' About Cable Cars in Love

This might just be the sweetest short film you'll see all year. Crush is an adorable 3-minute animated short made by a French animation collective called MegaComputeur (from their site: "We love telling stories and bringing characters to life… Especially dumb characters.") and it's a must watch. It was commissioned by the French Alps ski resort Val Thorens and it's a delightful short about two cable cars in love. A scrap dealer about to crush an old 80s cable car imagines what life was like for two mountain lovers on cables. The character designs are so cute and I love how pure their love is - sharing fondue and snacks together, relaxing in a hot tub, making snowmen. Yes, I can confirm that this definitely makes me want to visit the mountains. I always adore these kind of warm, charming animated shorts that are meant to make you smile and laugh. ›››

Stuffed is a BAFTA-nominated short musical, made by Theo Rhys with music by Joss Holden-Rea. Yep, it's even nominated for Best British Short at the BAFTAs, in addition to other awards it has won. Stuffed premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival won the Audience Award there, before stopping by other film festivals throughout last year. It's a 20-minute musical about a taxidermist who dreams of stuffing a human, and the man she meets online so afraid of ageing he volunteers to be her specimen.
