Teaser for Japan's Latest Reboot - Anno & Higuchi's 'Shin Ultraman'

Shin Ultraman Trailer

Guess who's back?! Toho Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the monsterverse adventure Shin Ultraman, an update on the beloved '60s TV character from Japan. Toho convinced filmmakers Hideaki Anno & Shinji Higuchi to re-team again after making Shin Godzilla in 2016, updating the classic Ultraman character for modern times. The new Ultraman design is is based on an Ultraman painting by the late Tohl Narita in 1983 called “Incarnation of Truth, Justice, and Beauty”. This first trailer includes glimpses of the monsters Neronga and Gabora. Shin Ultraman stars Takumi Saitoh, who eventually becomes the human host of Ultraman, with Masami Nagasawa and Hidetoshi Nishijima. There's quite a bit of footage in the teaser - the two monsters look a bit fake (much like Shin Godzilla), but the rest of it seems like good fun. ›››

Sundance 2021: 'John and the Hole' is a Brilliant, Unsettling Parable

John and the Hole

Hole-y sh*t, indeed. (Let's just get that pun out of the way.) John and the Hole is, in my opinion, one of the finest films premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. It's divisive in the best of ways. The film is based around a seriously messed up concept that is meant to be provocative and unsettling, and yet still be compelling in a very cinematic way. It's not at all what I expected (an indie Home Alone re-imagination) instead it's a very dark parable that acts as a metaphor for about 100 different things in society. My theory as to what it means is only what first came to my mind watching, and others will find more connections and references in it. Which is the mark of something brilliant - not only is it oddly alluring to watch, even though you hate what's going on, but in the search for meaning I found so much nuance buried within the frames. ›››

Sundance 2021: Sian Heder's 'CODA' is a Revolution in Deaf Cinema

CODA Review

Nothing can compare to that experience of watching a film premiere for its first time, knowing that from this point on it will reshape the industry. That's the case with CODA (which stands for Child of Deaf Adults) - one of the Opening Night films at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Despite all the hardship and challenges over the last pandemic year, there's still some extraordinary films being made just waiting for their chance to shine (and one day play in the cinema again). CODA is one of the best Sundance openers since Whiplash. It is a genuine revolution for Deaf cinema. And I really mean that - it has the power and potential to change everything, from opening the doors to the Deaf community in filmmaking, to changing the way we work with and interact with Deaf individuals all over the world. And it's a wonderful crowd-pleaser to enjoy anyway. ›››

Watch: 'Flipping Georgia Blue' Short Doc on Young Voters in Atlanta

Flipping Georgia Blue Short Doc

"If anybody that looked like me tried anything like that we'd be shot dead." This captivating short doc film profiles the powerful movement to flip the vote in Atlanta, Georgia this January. Flipping Georgia Blue is a short doc made by i-D and filmmaker Issey Penwarden. The story they're focusing on is the youth movement in Atlanta surrounding in the election, doing their best to encourage voting for Democrats in this vitally important run-off election. It's impressive that they started filming this in November, and put it together in only two months of time, not only collecting some quality footage but editing it into something meaningful. We already know who won, this is a little story about how that happened. And it's good to see Stacey Abrams get some time in this - as she's largely responsible for the results. "Watch the video below to hear from local creative, Hawa Camara, and other young people who used their vote to make history." ›››

Telling Stories Inside La Maca - 'Night of the Kings' Official US Trailer

Night of the Kings Trailer

"When the red moon comes out tonight, you will tell us stories." Neon has unveiled an official US trailer for the outstanding Ivory Coast film Night of the Kings, which has been playing at every major festivals since last fall. It first premiered at the Venice, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals (read our review here), and is playing at the Sundance Film Festival this week (hence the trailer). With the red moon rising, he is designated by the Boss to be the new "Roman" and must tell a story to the other prisoners. It's a film about a storyteller, and how stories move us and inspire. Official Trailer for Mysterious Cyber-Thriller 'Dark Web: Cicada 3301'

Dark Web: Cicada 3301 Trailer

"I can't risk you getting hurt - these people are far too powerful." Lionsgate is releasing this "intense, high-speed cyber-thriller" direct-to-VOD in March. And while I am a big fan of hacker films & tech thrillers, this one leans a bit too much into the cheesy, unrealistic realm. And it sounds like a bad Ready Player One rip-off. Dark Web: Cicada 3301 is based on a series of mysterious, unsolved real-life events. It starts as the hacker Connor discovers "Cicada 3301", an online treasure hunt that could be a recruiting tool for a secret society. Soon Connor, art-expert friend Avi, and secretive librarian Gwen are dashing from graffiti sites to ancient libraries to uncover real-life clues. But they must outrun aggressive NSA agents, also hot on the trail of Cicada, who want the glory for themselves. Starring Jack Kesy, Conor Leslie, Alan Ritchson, Ron Funches, and Andreas Apergis. This does not look good, and might be just barely entertaining. Maybe… ›››

Kate Amundsen in Empowering 'Donna: Stronger Than Pretty' Trailer

Donna Trailer

"How are you gunna raise three kids with no job, no money, and no husband?!" "Watch me." Gravitas has unveiled the official trailer for an indie drama titled Donna: Stronger Than Pretty, or just Donna for short. Inspired by actor / filmmaker Jaret Martino's own mother, he wanted to make a wholesome film to "inspire and empower other families to try to break free of negative conditioning, stereotypes, patterns, and cycles." A young mother's "American Dream" of raising a family turns into a living nightmare, until she finds the inner strength to listen to a voice she hadn't heard before: her own. Kate Amundsen stars as Donna, with a cast including Catherine Daddario, Sandy Bainum, Steve Barkman, Mikel Butler, Kiera Capitanio, Anthony Coppola, and James Aronson. This looks a bit bland and lacks style, telling an empowering but very obvious and generic story of perseverance. Unfortunately doesn't look worthwhile. ›››

Strand Releasing has debuted a new official US trailer for the upcoming release of a Moroccan film titled Adam, marking the feature directorial debut of Moroccan-British filmmaker Maryam Touzani. This first premiered in 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival and is only now getting an official release in the US this winter. When Samia, a young pregnant woman knocks on their door, Abla is far from imagining that her life will change forever. Gradually, Abla's resolve softens and her arrival begins to offer all of them the prospect of a new life. The cast includes Nisrin Erradi, Douae Belkhaouda, and Aziz Hattab. Ed Westwick & Louise Linton in Killer Film 'Me You Madness' Trailer

Me You Madness Trailer

"There's no need to escalate this to the point of no return!" STX Films has unveiled an official trailer for a dark comedy called Me You Madness, a kooky neon-filled romcom mashed up with American Psycho. Louise Linton stars in, wrote, directed, and produced the tongue-in-cheek movie. Linton plays Catherine Black, a brilliant, ruthless business executive who runs a top hedge fund in L.A. She lives a wealthy but ice-cold life and is a self-declared murderous psychopath. Enter Tyler Jones, a handsome young petty-thief and con man, arriving at her Malibu estate seeking "a room for rent" while naively unaware that he might be her next meal. Co-starring Ed Westwick as Tyler, along with Joel Michaely, Shuya Chang, and Gwen Van Dam. "Romance blossoms amid glamorous action in this neon-tinged, self-aware erotic thriller riff from writer/director/star Louise Linton, driven by a high-energy 80s soundtrack." This looks ridiculous…ly fun. ›››

Watch: French Animated Short on Child Abuse by Gibaud & Joyce

Vincent Gibaud - Face à l’inceste

"There are two monsters in my story…" It's not right to say this short film should be watched because it looks gorgeous, but the artwork and detail in the film is impressive nonetheless. This 2-min animated short was made by the French NGO Face à l'Inceste as a PSA for voters in France to encourage them to change a child abuse law by signing a petition and getting further involved in the cause. It was directed by Vincent Gibaud, and features some stunning art and animation by Jackson Joyce. It's being featured because of the quality of work. The film very disturbingly tells the story of a young child's tormentors, including a judge as one of them, utilizing vibrant animation. Combined with the Ennio Morricone music it's a very eerie film to watch - but that is the point, to grab your attention about an important political issue. Take a look below. ›››

New US Trailer for Quentin Dupieux's Detective Film 'Keep an Eye Out'

Keep an Eye Out Trailer

"I'm doing a trailer. I'll call you back." Dekanalog has unveiled an official trailer for the Quentin Dupieux film Keep an Eye Out, which originally premiered in 2018 under the French title Au Poste! (Which just translates to At Office!). The short synopsis is pretty straightforward: police officers at a station must solve a murder case. But this is a Dupieux film, so you know there's more funky shit going on than that. Between the opening sequence, when a man in just red briefs conducts a philharmonic orchestra in the open air, and the triple-meta denouement, the "whip-smart script disregards audience expectations, the fourth wall, and the laws of time and space. You'll never look at a protractor or an oyster the same way again." The film stars Belgian comedian Benoît Poelvoorde, with Grégoire Ludig, Marc Fraize, and Anaïs Demoustier. Described in reviews as "an absurd and often surreal comedy with some clever ideas tucked away inside." This new trailer is already super wacky and meta mad. It's true - no one makes films like Quentin Dupieux. ›››

Sundance 2021: 10 Most Anticipated Films at This Year's Virtual Fest

Sundance 2021

Back to Sundance we go for another year of discovery and amazing films. What's on the line-up this year? Even though Sundance is operating as a smaller festival mostly with virtual screenings (and satellite venues around the US) this year, due to the ongoing pandemic keeping things shut down and unsafe, they're ready to premiere a whole batch of new films anyway. Out of the 74+ films showing at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, I've picked 10 films that I'm looking forward to seeing the most. To keep things well balanced, I've chosen 5 feature films and 5 documentaries from the line-up. I'm still looking forward to so many of these and I don't think there's anything to worry about this year - the festival is featuring some fantastic films to discover. As usual with Sundance, you never can really tell what'll good or bad, but here's my picks anyway. ›››

Brendan Sexton III stars in this as George, with a cast including Alex Essoe, Terry Serpico, Clayton Landey, and Blake Robbins. Official Trailer for Open Relationships Doc 'There's No I in Threesome'

There's No 'I' in Threesome

"We just have to have as much fun as they do." HBO has debuted an official trailer for a new documentary film from New Zealand called There's No "I" in Threesome, which is one of the best enticing titles in a while. As that title indicates, the film is about open relationships and threesomes and trying out more than just one partner. There is No "I" In Threesome follows Ollie and Zoe, a newly engaged couple who agree to try out an open relationship before they get married. Anyone who has ever considered this knows it's going to end up as a disaster, but lots of people love to try it out anyway hoping it will be exciting because they're "open-minded." Alas, it always ends with pain and suffering, but this film explores all the different sides of it. "Working closely with an intimacy co-ordinator made the (filmmaking) process safe for everyone and ultimately resulted in more freedom of expression, rather than restriction, because it was all about trust and everyone involved respected that," says producer Alex Reed. I am certainly curious to see how this plays out. ›››

New Trailer for Restored Re-Release of Olivier Assayas' 'Demonlover'

Starring Gina Gershon, Chloë Sevigny, Connie Nielson, & Charles Berling. It's described as "hallucinatory, globe-spanning… neo-noir thriller and media critique in which nothing — not even the film itself — is what it appears to be." Reviews call the erotic film "a beautiful and disturbing contemporary filmic object." The new re-release is a 2K restoration of the unrated director's cut supervised by Olivier Assayas himself. This looks like a compelling follow-up to the other key bullying doc called, of course, Bully from 2012. Juno Films has released a promo trailer for a doc called The Most Beautiful Boy in the World, which is premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival soon. In 1971, at the world premiere of Death in Venice in London, Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti proclaimed Björn Andrésen, the teen star of his latest film, "The most beautiful boy in the world." This is the story of a boy who was thrust to international stardom for his iconic looks and lived a life of glamour. 50 years later, Björn looks back on what it is was like to be known as the "most beautiful boy in the world." The doc film is made by Swedish filmmakers Kristina Lindström & Kristian Petri. "Being immortalized as an iconic boy meant that Andrésen spent most of his adult life trying to be invisible, refusing to have his identity shaped by a shallow fantasy about who he was." It's described by Sundance as "a thoughtful and quietly devastating meditation on obsession, trauma, and the cost of fame." It looks damn good, offering nuanced commentary. ›››

Nick Robinson & Jason Clarke in Official Trailer for 'Silk Road' Movie

Silk Road Trailer

"This guy's the first Millennial gangster." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a movie called Silk Road, telling the rise & fall story of the founder of the infamous darkweb drug website called "Silk Road". This hasn't premiered at any film festivals and is heading straight to VOD in February for any curious to watch. Philosophical 20-something Ross Ulbricht creates Silk Road, a dark net website that sells narcotics, while DEA agent Rick Bowden goes undercover to bring him in. Nick Robinson stars as Ross, who values freedom above all, and Jason Clarke co-stars as the DEA agent. It's a back-n-forth story about the two and how similar they are. Also starring Katie Aselton, Jimmi Simpson, Daniel David Stewart, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lexi Rabe, Will Ropp, with Paul Walter Hauser, and Alexandra Shipp. I really wish this looked better than it does; it's a cool story to tell, but this seems like it's a wannabe The Social Network. ›››

First Trailer for Mysterious Horror 'Honeydew' with Sawyer Spielberg

Honeydew Trailer

"You're on my property!" Dark Star Pictures + Bloody Disgusting have unveiled the first official trailer for an indie mystery horror titled Honeydew, marking the feature directorial debut of Devereux Milburn. This looks super fucked up, so watch out - only for real die-hard horror fans. The film originally premiered at the Tribeca and Nightstream Film Festivals last year. Strange cravings and hallucinations befall a young couple after seeking shelter in the home of an aging farmer and her peculiar son. Stay away from these creepy folks. Starring Sawyer Spielberg in his first role, Malin Barr, Barbara Kingsley, Stephen D'Ambrose, and Jamie Bradley. Horror writer Anya Stanley describes the film as: "a filthy-ass movie and I mean that as a sincere compliment." Definitely looks messed up, don't watch this if you're planning on eating anytime soon. ›››

Full Trailer for 'A Glitch in the Matrix' Docu Premiering at Sundance

A Glitch in the Matrix Trailer

"The Matrix was real." Bring on this cinematic mindfuck! Magnolia has debuted the full-length trailer for A Glitch in the Matrix, the latest film by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Rodney Ascher - of Room 237, The Nightmare, and The El Duce Tapes. This is premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival this week, and will be released on VOD right away only a week later. A Glitch in the Matrix tackles this question "are we living in a simulation?" with testimony, philosophical evidence and scientific explanation in his for the answer. The feature film "traces the idea's genesis over the years, from philosophical engagements by the ancient Greeks to modern discussions by Philip K. Dick, the Wachowskis, and leading scholars and game theorists. Ascher deftly parallels conversations with people who believe we're living in a computer with the purely digital nature of the film itself; all interviews were conducted via Skype, all reenactments were digitally animated, and archives are largely drawn from ’90s-era cyber thrillers and video games." Oh hell yes, this is so my kind of philosophical deep dive and all the footage looks awesome. Can't wait to watch. ›››

Meet Brothers Issachar & Zabulon in First 'Mother Schmuckers' Trailer

Mother Schmuckers Trailer

"Did you lose him?" Clubb Guitos has revealed the first official trailer for Mother Schmuckers, a wacky new Belgian comedy premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival this month. The film screens in the Midnight category, and marks the feature directorial debut of two Belgian brothers - Harpo Guit & Lenny Guit. In the film, Issachar and Zabulon, two brothers in their 20s, are supremely stupid and never bored, as madness is part of their daily lives. When they lose their mother's beloved dog, they have 24 hours to find it - or she will kick them out. "Defying traditional labels, Mother Schmuckers doesn't take itself too seriously. Instead, the hilarious observations the brothers make about life and family relationships elevate everyday occurrences. A refreshing piece of filmmaking, their fun, funny and unapologetic style, is a rare and much needed gift in these uncertain times." The film stars Harpo Guit, Maxi Delmelle, Claire Bodson, and Mathieu Amalric. This looks like a ridiculously amusing indie discovery perfect for a Sundance unveiling. ›››

Watch: 'Grab My Hand: A Letter To My Dad' Lovely Animated Short

Grab My Hand: A Letter To My Dad

"Gate check!" A touching, life-affirming short film is now available online for everyone to enjoy. Grab My Hand: A Letter To My Dad is a lovely animated short film co-directed by filmmakers Camrus Johnson and Pedro Piccinini. The film is indeed a letter to Camrus' father, discussing the lessons his "superhero" dad taught him and how to appreciate all the ups & downs of life. "Grab My Hand: A Letter To My Dad was a gift to my grieving father and now a message to all to cherish every second you have with the ones you love while you still can." Featuring the voices of Camrus Johnson, Maaliyah Papillion, and Eric R. Williams. The animation in this is simple but very powerful, it doesn't need excessive details or elaborate action. It's just a visualization of the story Camrus is telling in here, and it enhances the emotions by allowing us to imagine ourselves in a similar situation. What a moving, heartfelt film - I'm glad Camrus is sharing it with the world. ›››

A Romantic Ghost Story - First Trailer for 'A Ghost Waits' Indie Film

A Ghost Waits Trailer

"This one… is not afraid…" Arrow Video has released an official trailer for an indie horror sensation called A Ghost Waits, a big breakout hit from the genre film festival circuit last year. This super low budget indie flick is a cute horror romantic comedy of sorts. An ingeniously unique and unpredictable combo of horror, humor and heart, A Ghost Waits is a DIY labor of love years in the making from first-time writer/director Adam Stovall and producer/star MacLeod Andrews. A man's job requires him to clean a house, which turns out to be haunted. In the course of trying to exorcise the ghost, he falls in love with her. Starring MacLeod Andrews, Natalie Walker, Sydney Vollmer, and Amanda Miller. This is very creative and amusing to watch, but not great overall, in my opinion. New Trailer for Restored Re-Release of Andrei Tarkovsky's 'Mirror'

Tarkovsky's Mirror Trailer

"Everything will be… all right." Janus Films + Film at Lincoln Center have revealed a new trailer for the restored re-release of Andrei Tarkovsky's 1975 film Mirror, also known as The Mirror, originally Зеркало (Zerkalo) in Russian. Tarkovsky made this one right after finishing both Andrei Rublev and Solaris, but it got lost in time as it didn't even make its way to America until five years later, first showing at the Telluride Film Festival, then opening in cinemas in 1983. A dying man in his 40s remembers his past. His childhood, his mother, the war, personal moments and things that tell of the recent history of all the Russian nation. Mirror features Margarita Terekhova, Filipp Yankovsky, Oleg Yankovsky, Ignat Daniltsev, and Maria Tarkovskaya. For those who haven't seen it and need convincing: "Mirror stands as perhaps the most extraordinary triumph of Tarkovsky’s short yet remarkable career, fashioning an originally lyrical and oneiric style to express intimate ruminations about family, history, creation, memory, and time." Official US Trailer for French Theme Park Ride Romance Film 'Jumbo'

Jumbo Trailer

"Have you ever felt something for an object?" Dark Star Pictures has released an official US trailer for the French indie Jumbo, which originally premiered at last year's Sundance & Berlin Film Festivals. Finally! I've been waiting for this to get released, because it's an underrated, kinky, quirky gem that deserves to be seen. Jeanne, a shy young woman, works in an amusement park. Fascinated with carousels, she still lives at home with her mother. That's when Jeanne meets Jumbo, the park's new flagship attraction. The two start an unexpected romance that cannot be defined. Noémie Merlant (from Portrait of a Lady on Fire) stars, with Emmanuelle Bercot, Bastien Bouillon, Sam Louwyck, and Tracy Dossou. I reviewed this from Berlinale last year, saying it's "uniquely original, surprisingly serious, and impressive." A worthy discovery. ›››

Re-Release Trailer for 1976 Country Music Film 'Heartworn Highways'

Heartworn Highways Trailer

"The best music and the best whiskey come from the same part of the country." Gather ’round and revisit this classic country music documentary film Heartworn Highways. Rarely screened, the beloved 1976 documentary portrait of the outlaw country movement will be re-released nationwide in virtual cinemas on February 5th this winter. In the mid-'70s, filmmaker James Szalapski documented the then-nascent country music movement that would soon become known as "outlaw country." Inspired, in part, by newly-long-haired Willie Nelson's embrace of hippie attitudes and audiences, a younger generation of artists including Townes Van Zandt, David Alan Coe, Steve Earle and Guy Clark popularized and developed the outlaw sound. This kind of seems like the anti-country music film about country music, which means it might be worth a watch even if you don't care much for country music. As usual, this is the best time to catch up with the film. ›››

The film stars Brittany S. Hall, Will Brill, Gail Bean, and Drew Fuller. New Trailer for Quebecois Crime Drama 'Mafia Inc' from Daniel Grou

Mafia Inc Trailer

"Godfather or Pope, I don't want to see you or your family of crooks!" Film Movement has released the official US trailer for mafia crime drama Mafia Inc, made in Montreal by filmmaker Quebecois filmmaker Daniel Grou. Set in Montreal in the 90s, the film tells the story of the Gamache family, tailors for the Paternò Mafia family for generations. Vince works on behalf of Frank the godfather with his eldest son, and seeks to earn his stripes by impressing him, but goes too far and ends up starting a war. Based on the book with the subtitle: "The Long, Bloody Reign of Canada's Sicilian Clan." Starring Marc-André Grondin as Vince, along with Sergio Castellitto, Cristina Rosato, Benz Antoine, Mylène Mackay, Domenic Di Rosa, Gilbert Sicotte, Mark Day, Pina Di Blasi, Rafael Petardi, & Ali Hassan. This actually looks pretty good, with all the usual mafia tropes, but still cool to see a mob story set up in Montreal of all places. ›››

Watch: 'Change' Short Doc Film About the Art of Mural Fest Kosovo

Change Trailer

"Being in the public with a camera was no different to being in public with a weapon because of how much it could affect reality." This outstanding short documentary film takes us to the Balkan country of Kosovo, into the town of Ferizaj (Google Maps), a small city desolated by war located in the south of the country. Change is a short film made by UK-based filmmaker Doug Gillen, who traveled there in September 2020 for Mural Fest Kosovo. While there he documented the work of the "Void Projects" art collective. The film features the work of many talented mural artists, including Ampparito, Aruallan, Micheal Beitz, Helen Bur, Emilio Cerezo, Doa Oa, Alba Fabre, Ivan Floro, Maria Jose Gallardo, Retry One, Zane Prater, Vlada Trocka, and Axel Void. This is a really wonderful introduction to Kosovo and the people there, since not many know much about it other than there was a war there not too long ago. And it's also a beauitfully captured portrait of how street art and murals can bring a community together, and perhaps inspire conversation and change. ›››

Influencer Fame Debunked in Trailer for HBO's 'Fake Famous' Doc

Fake Famous Trailer

"Or are there unintended consequences for the worse?" HBO has revealed a trailer for a documentary film titled Fake Famous, debuting directly on the TV / streaming starting at the beginning of February. This is the feature directorial debut of tech journalist Nick Bilton, exploring the meaning of fame and influence in the digital age through a social experiment. Following three Los Angeles-based people with relatively small followings, the film explores the attempts made to turn them into famous influencers by purchasing fake followers and bots to "engage" with their social media accounts. The young trio he selects — aspiring actress Dominique, fashion designer Chris, and real estate assistant Wylie — in return have wildly different experiences as their fake followers grow by the thousands each day. Peeling back the layers to reveal what’s really happening behind the scenes of influencer fame, the film highlights our obsession with the number of likes, followers, and favorites we get and how most of our online world is more fabricated than we realize. Definitely something we need to debunk more and more as we continue to tumble down into the digital age. ›››

Wrong Turn UK Trailer

"Descendants of these people are still living up their on the mountain?" Suddenly under siege, Jen and her group of friends seem headed right to the point of no return. Starring Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, Tim DeZarn, as well as Matthew Modine.
