Chairman FBR terms tax system ‘highly dangerous’ in letter to PM Imran

Chairman FBR terms tax system ‘highly dangerous’ in letter to PM Imran
Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Syed Shabbar Zaidi has termed the country’s tax system highly dangerous for the economy.

He wrote a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan drawing his attention to the faltering system of taxation.

Painting a grim picture of the current tax collection system, Zaidi said it is not sustainable for the coming generations because of the low level of tax collection which is even less than 10 per cent of tax-to-GDP ratio.

He said tax revenue is being generated through indirect taxes, adding a large number of people didn’t want to be part of the system.

Zaidi lamented less than 2 million people file tax returns, which accounts for just one per cent of the total population. 90 per cent of a total of 3.1 million traders are out of the tax net, he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Imran Khan in a video message appealed to the nation to pay taxes.

The prime minister said, “I am here to discuss a very critical matter with the people of Pakistan, only 1% of the population is filing taxes and bearing the weight of the other 99%.”

“If you do not pay your taxes then we can’t help rebuild the country, we can’t work on hospitals, schools and basic infrastructure due to lack of tax collection,” said the PM.

First Trailer for Nanfu Wang's Latest Documentary 'One Child Nation'

One Child Nation Trailer

"The fraud and corruption I discovered was nationwide." Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for documentary One Child Nation, the latest from Chinese filmmaker Nanfu Wang of the films Hooligan Sparrow and I Am Another You previously. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at True/False, CPH:DOX, Full Frame, Sarasota, Tribeca, and the Hot Docs Film Festival this summer. The film uncovers the untold history of China's One-Child policy and the generations of parents and children forever shaped by this social experiment. Nanfu Wang's sweeping film is "a stunning, nuanced indictment of the mindset that prioritizes national agenda over human life, and serves as a first-of-its-kind oral history of this collective tragedy - bearing witness to the truth as China has already begun to erase the horrors of its 'population war' from public record and memory." Looks like a powerful, personal story to tell. ›››

Review: Dougherty's 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Vies for Supremacy

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Review

In the aftermath of World War II, Japan's Toho Co., Ltd. assembled a team of filmmakers – co-writer and director Ishirō Honda, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, co-writer Takeo Murata, and special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya – to create a new kind of movie monster. Originally conceived as a walking metaphor for nuclear annihilation, Godzilla roared onto screens in Honda's genre-defining 1954 masterpiece, Gojira. The film captured the imagination – and embodied the fears – of an entire nation. Now 65 years later, the Godzilla series is fully recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest running film franchise in history with a whopping 35 films starring the titular beast. The latest entry, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, is the next chapter in Warner Bros Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' cinematic "MonsterVerse", following in the massive footsteps of Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014) and Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island (2017). ›››

First Trailer for Nick Corirossi's Softcore Horror Comedy 'Deep Murder'

Deep Murder Trailer

"We need to find him before he finds us…" "Sounds like something a murderer would say." Screen Media has debuted an official trailer for an awkward indie horror comedy titled Deep Murder, a wacky new spoof combining soft core porn cheesiness and a horror who-dun-it mystery. The film is the feature directorial debut of "Funny or Die" veteran filmmaker Nick Corirossi, to give you a sense of the comedic sensibilities in this, and it's got all the usual campiness you'd expect with this kind of concept. The story follows a group of people trapped inside a mansion making a porno, who start dying one-by-one. Starring Jerry O'Connell, Christopher McDonald, Katie Aselton, Stephanie Drake, Quinn Beswick, Chris Redd, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Josh Margolin. This doesn't look that terrible, but it doesn't look any good either. ›››

Mike Wallace Is Here Trailer

"If you've got a hell of a story on your hands… go after it!" Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Mike Wallace Is Here, the latest from filmmaker Avi Belkin (Winding). This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and stopped by True/False, Sarasota, Montclair, and a few other festivals this spring. The doc is an "unflinching look" at the legendary reporter Mike Wallace, who was one of original correspondents for CBS' "60 Minutes", which first debuted in 1968, only retiring some 38 years later. "Unearthing decades of never-before-seen footage from the '60 Minutes' vault, the film explores what drove and plagued Wallace, whose storied career was entwined with the evolution of journalism itself." That sounds great, especially in our current climate of news hysteria. It looks like they went through so much archival footage to put this together, packing a punch with his toughness. An extra fascinating doc to watch. ›››

World Cup 2019: West Indies outshines Pakistan by eight wickets

west indies win by eight wickets
Pakistan’s scored 105 runs against West Indies in its World Cup opener at the Trent bridge on Friday, that has been chased by opponents easily in lost of only two wickets.

The Sarfraz men played only 21.4 overs of the innings as Jason Holder picked three wickets, Andre Russel took two and Sheldon Cottrell bagged one wicket. Mohammad Hafeez with 16 and Wahab Riaz (18) were the only other batsmen who reached double figures.

The score has been all time second lowest score in the World Cup while the lowest is 74 against England in the famous 1992 World Cup. This is also Pakistan’s lowest total against West Indies in the World Cup. Previous was 160 back in 2015.

Pakistan lost its top order in a brief span in their opening match at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham. All-rounder Andre Russell exposed Pakistan´s fragile batting with two wickets in the space of 12 balls to give West Indies an early advantage.

Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman were the highest run getter from the Pakistan side as they both scored 22.

Wahab Riaz and Muhammad Aamir offered little resistance in the last wicket partnership, however, the partnership was broken on 22 runs - interestingly it was the highest partnership of Pakistan in the match.

West Indian fast bowler Oshane Thomas with his phenomenal 4-27 spell scripted a shambolic collapse of Pakistan batting line up as he played a vital role in sending the Champions Trophy winner packing on 105. The Sarfraz men played only 21.4 overs of the innings as Jason Holder picked three wickets, Andre Russel took two and Sheldon Cottrell bagged one wicket.

Opposition stage protest against Ali Muhammad’s diatribe

Opposition stage protest against Ali Muhammad’s diatribe
The National Assembly’s session on Friday was adjourned after members of the opposition staged a protest against Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan’s diatribe against MNAs Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir.

Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri announced the adjournment as parliamentarians from both sides came face-to-face on the assembly floor after Khan’s scathing criticism which included certain unparliamentary terms of the two Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) leaders.

The state minister, while responding to a question, accused the two MNAs of harbouring anti-Pakistan sentiments and questioned their loyalty to the country.

Khan accused Dawar and Wazir of being “touts” of Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security, and called for their expulsion as members of Pakistan’s Parliament.

His provocative comments drew a sharp response from the opposition benches as Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, stood up to register their protest midway through Khan’s address.

The situation soon escalated as lawmakers from other opposition parties, including Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), joined in the protest and surrounded the speaker’s dais.

The Ruet': Fawad Chaudhry announces launch of moonsighting mobile app

the Ruet
Following the launch of Pakistan's first official moonsighting website, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday announced the availability of a mobile application which displays the various phases of, and other real-time information about, the moon.

The app, named 'The Ruet', is available on the Google Play store for download.

According to the description provided on Google Play for the app, "The Ruet is a utility and information application related to moon and sighting of moon in Pakistan by Ministry of Science and Technology."

The main features of the app listed on the store are:

Current phase and age of the moon.
Islamic Hijri Calendar.
Setting location manually to any coordinates in Pakistan.
New moon details by Islamic months.
Moon phases calendar.
Moon, Sun and all major planets' positions on the interactive sky simulation.
The app's 'Phases' feature showcasing the phase of the moon on the chosen date. — Google Play store
Earlier this week, Chaudhry had announced the launch of the website, pakmoonsighting.pk, by the science and technology ministry "to halt the moonsighting controversy" that rears its head in the country every year prior to religious festivals.

The minister took the initiative for developing the website and the app after disagreeing with the way the moon was sighted by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee.

He said the way of sighting the moon by Islamic schools of thought of Imam Hambal and Imam Shaafai was different. “Imam Hambal supports physical sighting of moon while Imam Shaafai recommends scientific ways for it.”

Chaudhry had also questioned the wisdom of spending large sums of money on moonsighting every year after the National Assembly was informed recently that an amount of Rs3.06 million was spent on the sighting of the moon for Muharram, Ramazan, Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha last year.

He had said that it was time science and technology were utilised to end the controversy.

Britain may not have made final decision on Huawei and 5G

Britain not yet made a final decision
Britain may not have made a final decision on allowing China’s Huawei a restricted role in building parts of its 5G network, US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton said on Thursday.

The Trump administration, which has sanctioned Huawei and tried to block it buying US goods, has told allies not to use its 5G technology and equipment because of fears it would allow China to spy on sensitive communications and data.

Britain’s National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Theresa May, met to discuss Huawei last month and a decision was made to block Huawei from all core parts of the 5G network but to give it restricted access to non-core parts.

A final decision by the British cabinet of senior ministers was due to have happened in recent weeks but May’s pledge to step down as prime minister has stalled the process, sources said. She is expected to be out of office by the end of July.

When asked if the United States would like the next British leader to take a tougher stance on Huawei, Bolton said discussions with London were continuing but that Trump would probably raise it when he visits next week.

“I’m not sure that this decision has reached the prime ministerial level in final form. I mean we are still talking,” Bolton told reporters in London. “People are talking back and forth.” “Everybody is catching up to the dangers posed, especially in 5th-generation telecommunications systems, by equipment from Huawei and potentially others that can allow foreign governments a back door into telecommunications systems,” he said.

5G, which will offer much faster data speeds and become the foundation stone of many industries and networks, is seen as one of the biggest innovations since the birth of the internet itself a generation ago.

In what some have compared to the Cold War arms race, the United States is worried 5G dominance would give a competitor such as China an advantage Washington is not ready to accept.

“WOBBLY”: Huawei, founded in 1987 by a former engineer in China’s People’s Liberation Army, denies it spies for Beijing, says it complies with the law and that the United States is trying to smear it because Western companies are falling behind.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Britain on a visit this month that it needed to change its attitude towards China and Huawei, casting the world’s second largest economy as a threat to the West similar to that once posed by the Soviet Union.

“Now is not the time for either of us to go wobbly,” Pompeo said in a speech on the so-called special relationship, paraphrasing what former prime minister Margaret Thatcher once famously told late US President George H.W. Bush.

Britain has said it will announce the findings of a review into 5G suppliers to parliament once the work has been completed, though May’s imminent departure from office has slowed the process.

Wahab Riaz's 11-ball 18 runs could not do much to salvage his side's score and he was bowled out on the fourth ball of the 22nd over.

At the end of 10 overs, Pakistan put 45 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of three wickets.

Andre Russell took the wickets of Haris Sohail and Fakhar Zaman while Sheldon Cottrell picked up the wicket of opener Imamul Haq.

World No Tobacco Day being observed today

World No Tobacco Day being observed today
World No Tobacco Day is being observed on Friday (May 31).

The day aims to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on "tobacco and lung health."

The campaign will increase awareness on: the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease, the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people.

The campaign also serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.

Lung cancer

Tobacco smoking is the primary cause for lung cancer, responsible for over two thirds of lung cancer deaths globally. Second-hand smoke exposure at home or in the work place also increases risk of lung cancer. Quitting smoking can reduce the risk of lung cancer: after 10 years of quitting smoking, risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.

Chronic respiratory disease

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition where the build-up of pus-filled mucus in the lungs results in a painful cough and agonising breathing difficulties. The risk of developing COPD is particularly high among individuals who start smoking at a young age, as tobacco smoke significantly slows lung development. Tobacco also exacerbates asthma, which restricts activity and contributes to disability. Early smoking cessation is the most effective treatment for slowing the progression of COPD and improving asthma symptoms.

The film is about a family that lives in the Mexican countryside raising fighting bulls. Esther is in charge of running the ranch, while her husband Juan, a renowned poet, raises the beasts. When Esther becomes infatuated with a horse-breaker, Juan seems incapable to reach his own expectations about himself. Indeed a "soul-searching" drama about life and humanity. Starring Carlos Reygadas as Juan, with Natalia López, Natalia López, Maria Hagerman, and Yago Martínez. Definitely worth a watch. ›››

New Trailer for Uncut Edition of 90s Cult Classic 'Tammy & The T-Rex'

Tammy & The T-Rex Trailer

"Everybody walk the dinosaur." Chicago's Music Box Theatre has debuted an official trailer for the special "Gore-Cut" version of the 90s cult classic direct-to-video comedy Tammy & The T-Rex. Made only a year after Jurassic Park broke records in 1993, this film arrived in late 1994 and earned a cult following. It stars Denise Richards as the high school girlfriend of a guy who is murdered and then his brain is implanted into a robotic T-Rex that looks super fake. Oh, it's wacky. "Playing like a '90s Disney Channel movie—until the decapitations and head crushings begin. So put on your best T-Rex costume and join us for an ultra-rare, and possibly first-of-its-kind, public screening of this original, uncut, R-rated, gore-filled 35mm print of Tammy." It also stars a young Paul Walker, plus Theo Forsett, Ellen Dubin, and Terry Kiser. This new "uncut" version of the camp sci-fi comedy is part of a 4K restoration, direct from the camera negative, that will be out on VOD/Blu-ray later in the year. You just have to see this film to believe it really does exist. ›››

Official Trailer for Urgent Porpoise Rescue Documentary 'Sea of Shadows'

Sea of Shadows Trailer

"There's some really bad guys here." National Geographic has unveiled an official trailer for the acclaimed, award-winning documentary Sea of Shadows, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It won the Audience Award in the World Doc Competition category there, received some rave reviews, and also played at the CPH:DOX festival. Sea of Shadows is another marine animal crisis doc similar to the other outstanding films The Cove or Blackfish before it. This time the focus is on an endangered species of whale called the vaquita porpoise, which is being threatened by fisherman in the Sea of Cortez, aka the Gulf of California. Mexican cartels and Chinese mafia are harvesting the swim bladder of the totoaba fish, the "cocaine of the sea", killing other life in the area. Environmental activists, Mexican navy and undercover investigators are fighting back against this illegal multi-million-dollar business. This is one of those super important docs that can actually make a real difference in the world. It looks outstanding!! Don't skip this. ›››

Michael Roark Fights to Heal & Race in 'Bennett's War' Official Trailer

Bennett's War Trailer

"Going wheel to wheel is not smart for someone in your condition." Forrest Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie injured war veteran meets racing sports drama titled Bennett's War, the latest from filmmaker Alex Ranarivelo (Running Wild, Pray for Rain, Dirt, Ride). The film is about a young soldier in the Army Motorcycle Unit named Marshall Bennett, who is injured by an IED while serving in combat. He returns home and makes a remarkable comeback from a broken back and leg to be a champion motorcross racer. Michael Roark stars as Bennett, with a cast including country star Trace Adkins, plus Ali Afshar, Allison Paige, Hunter Clowdus, Brando Eaton, Tony Panterra, Michael King, & Taylor Kalupa. This looks exactly as cheesy and kitschy and uber heroic as described, but maybe that's what works for this. ›››

TV drama Cheekh is going south and only decent acting is propping it up

TV drama Cheekh is going south and only decent acting is propping it up
Someone please explain to me why Pakistani writers love to drag a story until they lose the purpose of said story? Why is the overdose of depression and tragedy so necessary?

Cheekh, a drama started out with a pretty sound script wanting to make a difference and wanting to give women a voice – yet somewhere after episode 15, it lost track of its goals. At this point Cheekh might as well have been titled 'Aansoo'. Don’t get me wrong; there are some good scenes and lines, but they are few and far in between.

A little recap

Cheekh is the story of Mannat (Saba Qamar) getting justice for her friend Nayab's murder (played by Ushna Shah) that her [Mannat's] brother-in-law, Wajih commits. Mannat is married to Shayaan, Wajih’s older brother. The case is finally in court and hearings have begun.

Wajih (Bilal Abbas Khan) goes to ultimate extremes and crosses many lines to hurt Mannat emotionally and physically, with no regard for his own brother or for the consequences. From uploading a video stating Mannat is getting back at him because he rejected her, to having her mother’s house vandalised and locking her up in her own storeroom, Wajih does whatever he can to harm Mannat.

Mannat and Shayaan (Emmad Irfani) learn they are expecting but again, because of Wajih, she unfortunately loses the baby. Wajih's lawyer (Shabbir Jaan) not only encourages all of this, but presses him to do more to scare and break Mannat. He lies in court, shows a forged suicide note by Nayab, and even gets the inspector to lie on the stand.

Yawar, the older brother (Aijaz Aslam) is getting tired of Wajih’s tactics but still does nothing to stop him. We learn that it is he who is unable to have kids and not his wife, Shahwar (Maira Khan). He had reports faked five years ago cause his ego is bigger than his conscience and he is a weak, weak man. When Shahwar finds out the truth, she pretends that she is expecting and all hell breaks loose when he finally acknowledges that he can’t have kids and then… wait for it… he divorces her! This perhaps is the most preposterous end to that relationship, and I’ll discuss why.

Haya’s (Azekah Daniel) character has a random epiphany after Wajih tells her he lied about Mannat having feelings for him. She still doesn’t believe that her brother killed Nayab, but not only does she apologize to Shayaan and Mannat, but also helps Nayab’s family.

Ramzan Ahmed (Nayab’s father, played by Noor-ul-Hassan) loses his job and house and end up on the street thanks to Wajih and his thugs. Shariq sees them at a mazaar and calls Haya after bringing them home with him. Haya arranges for a house and takes financial responsibility for the entire family.

In episode 21, Mannat realizes that not only did this fight take everything from her, but also from her husband. It’s also the episode where Mannat’s mother continuously gets threatening phone calls telling her to stop her daughter from going to court or they’ll kill her.

That’s it ladies and gentlemen, the last four paragraphs are episodes 15-21. I have no clue as to why writer Zanjabeel Asim has dragged the script so much. There are numerous unnecessary scenes like Ramzan’s wife leaving him after he loses his job and then coming back – only to end up on the streets (by the way his wife’s makeup was pretty perfect for someone who doesn’t even have food to eat).

And the interaction between Haya and Shariq where he throws a glass in front of her car, even though the interaction just before that was quite pleasant and polite... that scene was completely out of place, even for a flashback. The scene where the househelp Lalu is framed for stealing Wajih’s phone and gets beat up, only to have Yawar apologize to him justifying it as Wajih under stress was also ridiculous.

But one of the most important scenes that absolutely horrified me was when Yawar divorces Shahwar. Don’t get me wrong, the divorce was absolutely necessary. Shahwar was lied to and disrespected for 5 years, made to feel “incomplete,” and Yawar treated her like he was doing her a favour by not asking for any kids even though he was the one with the medical condition.

But for the scene to have an impact or change narratives, Shahwar should have been the one to leave Yawar and ask for a divorce. This would at least have preserved her respect.

As a writer, you can tell whatever story you want – you have a chance to change thoughts and narratives, so why not? Why must one female be humiliated to the core just so another can somewhat fight?

Cheekh is supposed to be a story about a woman (Mannat) getting justice for her friend’s attempted rape and murder by her brother in law. She goes against everyone to do this with the only support being her husband. But by making every other woman in the drama appear weak, the show seems to be suggesting that if one woman seeks justice, all other women will pay the price for this.

Udaari dealt with this issue a lot more sensibly and with much more sensitivity even though within that drama, a massive difference of class and resources existed between abuser and abused. No one lost anything because of the fight. The women all stood as one to get justice — which they did. It was hard, but other women weren't humiliated to get justice. This proves that the misogyny shown in Cheekh just isn't necessary.

Also unnecessary is the plot point that shows Mannat losing her unborn baby. In choosing this, the writer is (again) saying women should just be quiet or lose everything they have if they want to fight. The overdose of tragedy and depression that Mannat and Shayaan have to go through is ridiculous.

There were some good scenes though. All the scenes between Mannat and Shayan are actually pretty great, especially the one where she hears him crying in the bathroom and the conversation they have afterwards is very real. For once, a husband has been shown to not only stand by his wife, but to also be sensitive and real about what he himself goes through after the loss of an unborn baby. Men usually aren’t shown like that in Pakistani dramas, so I do give the writer points for that.

Emad Irfani brilliantly portrays Shayaan in every manner. Not once does he tremble or lose sight of his character. He is made to go through a variety of different emotions and he does it all, flawlessly. The only other person I have seen who is able to do this is Fahad Mustafa!

Bilal Abbas Khan – this guy rocks as a psychopath. Wajih is relentless – he is calculated, he doesn’t at all care about who he hurts, or the consequences afterwards, and he is even there to rub their noses in it. If he were to sell his soul to the devil, the devil would give it back! I haven’t yet seen a psychotic character like this in Pakistani dramas and Bilal Abbas Khan aces it. There’s a scene where Shayan confronts Wajih saying “agli dafa waar karna hai to mere saamne karna, peeche nahi,” and he instantly without thinking says “done!” This guys is phenomenal!

Saba Qamar is as close as anyone can get to being compared to Marina Khan. She too has to go through a variety of emotions and is perfect in all of them.

The one person I’m really surprised about is Aijaz Aslam. I was never a fan and always thought he was OTT, but he fits into Yawar’s character like a glove. Yawar is this confused and weak egomaniac and for some reason, he has me feeling for him at times. It’s a very complex character and Aijaz Aslam does complete justice to it.

As flawed as the plot is, Cheekh's script does allow for layered characters.

In terms of direction, Badar Mehmood does a decent job with the script he has. He extracts complete perfection from his characters and gives us a great visual. The editing isn’t as up to par as it has been previously either as 21 episodes could easily have been delivered in 14-15 episodes.

I believe there are 5-6 episodes left so hopefully they’ll be better than the last few episodes. I really wish ARY had presented Cheekh in double episodes – it would have been more tolerable then.

England start 2019 World Cup campaign with 104-run win over South Africa

England start 2019 World Cup campaign with 104-run win over South Africa
England inflicted a heavy 104-run defeat over South Africa on Thursday in the opening match of the 2019 World Cup at Kennington Oval in London.

Chasing a 308-run target, South Africa were dealt an early blow when opener Hashim Amla had to retire hurt after copping a Jofra Archer bouncer.

Quinton de Kock (68) top scored for the visitors and Rassie van der Dussen chipped in with a 50 but no other batsmen did enough for the Africans to pose a serious threat to the hosts.

Archer was the star of the the show as he picked up three wickets and bowled with hostile pace that troubled Faf du Plessis' men.

Ben Stokes was named the man of the match for his two-for coupled with an 89-run knock in the first innings.

Earlier, South Africa had restricted England to 311 for eight as the tournament hosts and favourites made a stuttering start in their quest to win the trophy for the first time.

Ben Stokes top-scored with 89, while England captain Eoin Morgan (57), Jason Roy (54) and Joe Root (51) all made fifties.

But England, who last year set a world record for the highest one-day international total of 481-6 and have often blown teams away with the bat, were repeatedly pegged back by a Proteas side who deployed the slower ball to good effect.

England, after Britain's Prince Harry officially opened the tournament, lost a wicket second ball before Roy and Root shared a stand of 106 that was equalled by Morgan and Stokes.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, despite being without injured spearhead Dale Steyn, saw his decision to field rewarded in dramatic style when Imran Tahir struck with just the second ball of the match to dismiss Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck.

Normally it is a paceman who has the first spell.

But Du Plessis gave the ball to 40-year-old leg-spinner Tahir, the oldest player in the tournament, instead and a well-flighted delivery had Bairstow edging to wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, with the Pakistan-born Tahir running off in a semi-circle — his familiar celebration.

Roy and Root were both in fine touch and England would have wanted at least one of them to go on to a big score. But from 107-1, England lost two wickets for four runs in four balls.

Roy flat-batted an intended pull off Andile Phehlukwayo to Du Plessis at mid-off before Root steered Rabada to backward point, where JP Duminy held a sharp catch.

Morgan, whose aggressive approach has been symbolic of England's rise to the top of the one-day international rankings after their woeful first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup, struck the first two sixes of the match off successive balls from fast bowler Lungi Ngidi.

The left-hander's drive over long-off was followed by a pull above long leg.

But having completed a run-a-ball fifty, Morgan's drive off Tahir (two for 61) was well caught low down by a diving Aiden Markram, running in from long-on.

Dangerman Jos Buttler fell for just 18 while left-hander Stokes, trying to break the shackles, saw his 79-ball knock end in the penultimate over when a reverse hit off Ngidi (three for 66) found Hashim Amla at third man.

Lineups: England: Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (captain), Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer.

South Africa: Hashim Amla, Quinton De Kock, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (captain), Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir.

One Last Fight - First Teaser Trailer for Stallone's 'Rambo: Last Blood'

Rambo: Last Blood Trailer

"I've lived in a world of death… I've watched people I loved die…" Don't mess with Rambo! Lionsgate has debuted a teaser trailer for action sequel Rambo: Last Blood, otherwise known as Rambo V - the fifth and final movie in the Rambo action series that first began in 1982 (with First Blood). Sylvester Stallone once again returns to play Rambo, in what is said to be the very last Rambo movie. Lionsgate says this film "marks the last chapter of the legendary series." Rambo goes up against a Mexican cartel in this one, and the trailer gives us a first look. The cast includes Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Adrianna Barraza, Yvette Monreal, Genie Kim aka Yenah Han, Joaquin Cosio, and Oscar Jaenada. This looks like it might be good, but it's hard to tell from just this. Is Rambo still relevant in John Wick's world? I don't know. ›››

First Trailer for 'The Kitchen' in NYC with Moss, McCarthy, Haddish

The Kitchen Trailer

"Just to be clear - now we run this neighborhood." Warner Bros has revealed the first official trailer for the NYC crime thriller The Kitchen, marking the directorial debut of Oscar nominated screenwriter Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton, Blood Father). The movie stars Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, and Tiffany Haddish as the wives of mobster husbands, who continue to run their racket after the men are sent to prison. "Once they get a taste of the fast life and easy money, it won't be easy to stop." This seems a bit like a 70s New York version of Steve McQueen's Widows from last year - about gangster wives. The cast includes Common, Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Bill Camp, Brian d'Arcy James, and Margo Martindale. It's actually based on a graphic novel also titled The Kitchen. Looks pretty damn good. ›››

Canada's Trudeau, U.S. VP Pence meet to talk trade, China and Venezuela

Canada's Trudeau, U.S. VP Pence meet to talk trade, China and Venezuela
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is flying to Ottawa on Thursday to talk to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about ratification of the new North American trade agreement and the two countries’ dispute with China.

It will be the first official visit by a senior member of President Donald Trump’s administration to Canada’s capital. Pence will arrive in the late morning and meet with Trudeau at about 1200 ET (1600 GMT).

The main issue under discussion will be the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is to replace the existing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a Canadian government source said.

The deal has yet to be ratified by any of the three countries, though Canada formally began the process on Wednesday and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday announced his government’s intention to send the treaty to Congress for ratification.

Pence - Trump’s point person for getting the deal through the U.S. Congress - has been traveling through U.S. states dependent on trade with Canada and Mexico to make the case for the deal, which faces a tricky path ahead of presidential and congressional elections next year.

Some lawmakers in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives have said it needs stronger enforcement provisions for new labor and environmental standards.

Another top item at the Pence-Trudeau meeting will be Canada’s arrest of a top executive of China-based Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world’s largest telecoms network gear maker.

Canada arrested Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wangzhou, on a U.S. warrant in December. China subsequently arrested two Canadians and charged them with espionage and cut off imports of key Canadian commodities.

Washington has accused Huawei of being tied to China’s government, and has effectively banned U.S. firms from doing business with the company for national security reasons.

Pence and Trudeau are also expected to discuss the political crisis in Venezuela. Pence has played a major role in the Trump administration’s diplomatic and economic efforts to force out Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Both Washington and Ottawa have backed opposition leader Juan Guaido.

Finally, Trudeau said on Wednesday he would raise his concerns about “backsliding” on women’s rights in the United States and elsewhere with Pence, a social conservative and one of the most prominent American abortion opponents.

“It’s not a top agenda item, but the subject will be broached,” the Canadian government source said.

Jordan king meets Kushner, urges formation of Palestinian state with E al-Quds as capital

Jordan king meets Kushner, urges formation of Palestinian state with E al-Quds as capital
Jordan’s King Abdullah II has called for the formation of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 boundaries with East Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital, in what appears to be at odds with Washington’s upcoming proposal on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He made the remarks in a meeting with a US delegation headed by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, along with Middle East Envoy Jason Greenblatt, in Amman on Wednesday.

King Abdullah II, who acts as the custodian of Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem al-Quds, expressed his commitment to the so-called two-state solution.

The Jordan king had “stressed the need to step up all efforts to achieve comprehensive and lasting peace on the basis of the two-state solution, guaranteeing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem [al-Quds] as its capital ... in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions,” the Royal Hashemite Court said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Jordan’s official Petra news agency reported that the two sides had exchanged views on “regional developments, especially efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”

Greenblatt also tweeted that he had a “constructive meeting” with King Abdullah II that included “a good conversation about regional dynamics.”

The US delegation is meeting with top officials in Morocco, Jordan and Israel this week before it unveils the economic portion of the so-called “deal of the century” during a conference in Manama, Bahrain, on June 25-26.

On Tuesday, Kushner and Greenblatt held talks with Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on the Manama forum, which has been boycotted by all Palestinian factions.

The Palestinians have also rejected the US Middle East initiative as “the slap of the century” because it is said to hugely favor Israel.

On Tuesday evening, Jordanian activists held a protest near the heavily-fortified American embassy in Amman to denounce Kushner’s visit and Trump's plan on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The demonstrators chanted slogans such as “The deal of the century will not pass,” and “Down with the US.”

They also held placards reading, “No to the deal of the century,” and “Go back home Kushner.”

Addressing the crowd, Abdul Hamid Thunaibat, leader of the Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood, called on the government to adopt a clear position regarding its participation in the Bahrain conference.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have said they will send delegations to the event and Israel’s Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon has said he will also intend to attend.

Separately on Wednesday , Turkish foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu emphasized that any deal without the formation of an independent Palestinian state would be rejected.

Speaking at a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Cavusoglu urged the body’s member states to join forces for the establishment of a sovereign Palestine, saying, “This is a responsibility that falls first and foremost on our shoulders.”

All OIC member states, he added, need to renew their commitment to preserving the status quo of Jerusalem al-Quds, which remains a red line.

“I am therefore confident that any peace deal which does not envisage the creation of an independent Palestinian state with al-Quds al-Sharif as its capital is bound to be rejected by the OIC community,” the top Turkish diplomat said.

The so-called Middle East peace process was dealt a major blow in December 2017, when Trump recognized Jerusalem al-Quds as the “capital” of Israel. He also moved the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the Israeli-occupied city in May 2018.

Angered by Trump’s contentious move, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Palestine would no longer recognize the US as a mediator in the decades-long conflict with Israel.

Negotiation with US ‘total loss’: Ayatollah Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei meets with a number of university professors, elites and researchers in Tehran.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has ruled out the possibility of talks between Tehran and Washington, saying such negotiations will be “fruitless”, “harmful”, and “a total loss”.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will absolutely not sit for talks with America … because first, it bears no fruit and second, it is harmful,” the Leader said in a meeting with a number of university professors, elites and researchers in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Leader referred to negotiation as a tactic used by Americans to complement their strategy of pressure. “This is actually not negotiation; it’s rather a means for picking the fruits of pressure.”

The only way to counter this trick, he said, is to utilize the means of pressure available for use against Americans. “If they are used properly, the Americans will either stop or decrease pressures.”

However, the Leader warned against being deceived by the US plot, saying that the Islamic Republic must use the leverage at its disposal to counter the US’ pressures; otherwise, being deceived into negotiation would be a “total loss”.

The Leader said Iran’s leverage is not military unlike what the anti-Iran propaganda says, even though that option is not off the table in case of necessity.

He referred to the recent decision by the Supreme National Security Council to reduce some of Iran’s commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal with the world, and described it as one of the means that Iran can use against the US’ pressures.

“The leverage Iran has used for now is the recent SNSC decision, but we won’t remain at this level forever, and in the next phase, if necessary, we’ll use other means of pressure,” the Leader warned.

Back on May 8, 2019, on the anniversary of the US’ withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran said that it will halt implementing some terms of the nuclear deal until parties to the deal other than US take action to mitigate the negative impacts of US decision in May 2018 to withdraw from the agreement.

The Islamic Republic says other parties to the JCPOA, particularly the E3 - France, Britain, and Germany - have failed so far to compensate for the US withdrawal and help Iran reap the economic dividends of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has set a two-month deadline for the parties to either do the necessary actions to save the JCPOA or face Iran resuming a nuclear enrichment program which had been suspended as part of the deal in return for lifting of international sanctions on Tehran.

Ayatollah Khamenei also noted that the Islamic Republic has no problem with holding negotiation with the Europeans and others, but it won't sit for talks on "core" issues of the 1979 Revolution, including its defensive capabilities.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei referred to US President Donald Trump's so-called peace plan for the Middle East, saying that the US and its cronies will fail to impose the so-called "deal of the century" on Palestinians.

US President Donald Trump has set forth his so-called “deal of the century” to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The plan is to be revealed at an undetermined date sometime after the Israeli parliamentary elections.

Since Trump took office a trio composed of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Jason Greenblatt, long-time confidant and chief legal officer to Trump’s business empire, and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman have been working on such a plan.

In his Wednesday comments, the Leader said that defending Palestinians was both a humanitarian and a religious duty and thus participation in this year’s International Quds Day rallies was more important than before given the ongoing sensitive developments in the region.

The International Quds Day is an annual event held on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

It was initiated by the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini to express support for the Palestinians and oppose the Zionist regime.

Israel heads towards 2nd snap election this year as Netanyahu fails to form govt

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Israel's parliament voted to dissolve itself early Thursday, sending the country to an unprecedented second snap election this year as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a governing coalition before a midnight deadline.

The dramatic vote, less than two months after parliamentary elections, marked a setback for Netanyahu and sent the longtime leader's future into turmoil.

Netanyahu, who has led Israel for the past decade, had appeared to capture a fourth consecutive term in the April 9 election. But infighting among his allies, and disagreements over proposed bills to protect Netanyahu from prosecution stymied his efforts to put together a majority coalition.

Rather than concede that task to one of his rivals, Netanyahu's Likud party advanced a bill to dissolve parliament and send the country to the polls for a second time this year.

“I didn't spare any effort to avoid unnecessary elections,” Netanyahu said after the vote, lashing out at an ally-turned-rival, Avigdor Lieberman, who refused the prime minister's offers to join the government.

He said the country was being forced to hold “unnecessary, wasteful elections because the people had their say. They didn't have their say enough for what Mr. Lieberman wants.” Had the deadline passed without the vote, Israel's president would have given another lawmaker, most likely opposition leader Benny Gantz, an opportunity to put together a coalition.

After the vote, Gantz angrily accused Netanyahu of choosing self-preservation over allowing the country's political process to run its course.

Gantz said that Netanyahu opted for “three crazy months” of a new campaign and millions of wasted dollars over new elections because he is “legally incapacitated” by looming indictments. “There is no other reason,” Gantz said.

The country now plunges into a new election campaign that will last at least three months under Israeli law. With much of the country on vacation in late August, a tentative date of Sept. 17 was set.

The campaign looks to complicate Netanyahu's precarious legal standing. Israel's attorney general has recommended pressing criminal charges against him in three separate corruption cases, pending a hearing scheduled for October.

Even if Netanyahu wins the election, it is unlikely he will be able to form a government and lock down the required political support for an immunity deal before an expected indictment. That would force him to stand trial and put heavy pressure on him to step aside.

The political uncertainty could also spell trouble for the White House's Mideast peace efforts. The U.S. has scheduled a conference next month in Bahrain to unveil what it says is the first phase of its peace plan, an initiative aimed at drawing investment into the Palestinian territories.

With the Palestinians, who accuse the U.S. of being unfairly biased toward Israel, opposed to the plan, and Netanyahu preoccupied with re-election, it remains unclear how the Americans will be able to proceed. President Donald Trump's top Mideast adviser, son-in-law Jared Kushner, was in Israel and scheduled to meet with Netanyahu on Thursday.

That Netanyahu struggled to secure a majority coalition in the 120-seat parliament was a shocking turn of events for the country's dominating political figure.

In the April 9 vote, Likud and its hardline nationalist and religious parties captured a majority of 65 seats.

The immediate cause of the crisis was his dispute with Lieberman, a former aide who leads the small Yisrael Beitenu faction.

The men had clashed over Lieberman's demand to subject ultra-Orthodox religious males to the military draft, which is compulsory for most Jewish males. Without Lieberman's five Knesset seats, Netanyahu had no parliamentary majority.

But the deeper issue is connected to Netanyahu's legal troubles. Facing a likely indictment, he had pushed his coalition partners to pass legislation that would grant him immunity and curb the powers of the country's Supreme Court.

Opposition parties strongly oppose granting Netanyahu immunity, robbing him of any alternatives to Lieberman as he tried to form a coalition.

For the past two decades, Lieberman has alternated between being a close ally and a thorn in the side of his former boss. He has held a number of senior Cabinet posts, including defense minister and foreign minister.

Lieberman's base of support is fellow immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and he takes a hard line toward the Palestinians but also is staunchly secular.

He has demanded that the parliament pass pending legislation that requires young ultra-Orthodox men to be drafted into the military. Years of wide exemptions for religious men have generated resentment among the rest of Jewish Israelis, who are required to serve.

“I am not against the ultra-Orthodox community. I am for the state of Israel. I am for a Jewish state but against a Halachic state,” Lieberman wrote on Facebook early Wednesday, using a term that refers to a Jewish state governed by Jewish law.

The ultra-Orthodox parties consider conscription a taboo, fearing that military service will lead to immersion in secularism, and insist the exemptions should stay in place. Netanyahu, dependent on the parties' political support, says they have compromised enough and refuses to press them further.

Netanyahu maintained contacts with Lieberman and other parties in hopes of forging a deal as a parliamentary debate took place. Many of the Likud speakers lashed out at Lieberman, accusing him of forcing an unnecessary election.

But as a parliamentary debate stretched toward midnight, it became clear there would be no compromise.

A bitter Netanyahu claimed after the vote that Lieberman “had no intention” to compromise and made unrealistic demands. “He is dragging the entire country for another half a year of elections,” he said.

Mohammad Amir fit for World Cup debut: Sarfaraz

Pace spearhead Mohammad Amir
Pace spearhead Mohammad Amir is fit and available for selection for Pakistan's opening World Cup match against the West Indies on Friday, captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said.

There was speculation that the 27-year-old, who missed the last four matches of the one-day international series against England earlier this month, might not be able to make his World Cup debut at Trent Bridge.

“Amir is fully fit and available for selection for tomorrow's game,” Sarfaraz said in his pre-match press conference.

Amir, who missed the 2011 and 2015 World Cups due to a five-year ban for spot-fixing, was seen bowling using his full run-up in the team's practice session.

Sarfaraz said he hoped the team could put behind them a streak of 10 straight ODI defeats.

“Yes, we have lost 10 matches but we have to forget that and start the World Cup journey,” he said.

Asked if he was worried about the short boundaries and a flat pitch at Trent Bridge, Sarfaraz said: “When we came here on the first day and asked the groundsman what is the par score he told us that it's 480.”

Top-ranked England have scored 400-plus twice at this ground, 444-3 against Pakistan in 2016 and a world record of 481-6 against Australia last year.

“Cricket has changed. People used to think that 300 was a par score but it has changed. We will have different pitches in the World Cup so if a team scores 300-plus then the other team will also go for that,” he said.

Sarfaraz said both Pakistan and the West Indies were unpredictable teams.

“It's good to be unpredictable so all teams are scared of you. Yes, we are unpredictable and we will take that tag, so are the West Indies,” said the skipper.

West Indies, who sneaked through last year's qualifying round to feature in this year's event, piled up 421 against New Zealand in a warm-up match on Tuesday.

With their powerful batting including Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope and Andre Russell, Pakistan will be hard-pressed to contain them. But Sarfaraz said taking wickets will be the key.

“If you want to contain any team you have to take wickets whoever you play, so it's important to put pressure by taking wickets."
