Full Trailer for Sci-Fi 'Biosphere' with Mark Duplass & Sterling K. Brown

Biosphere Trailer
"I'm going to go find a way to keep us alive. I just need you to believe." Believe in him, trust in him! And together you might just save the world. IFC Films has unveiled a full official trailer for Biosphere, an indie sci-fi comedy that first premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year. Co-written by, produced by, and starring Mark Duplass, it's yet another Duplass Brothers production - cultivating an original idea and giving a first-time filmmaker a chance to create something unique. In the not-too-distant future, the last two men on earth must adapt and evolve to save humanity. Stuck in this little "biosphere", they have to figure out what is going on when their fish start dying. This looks unique and compelling, though I'm still not sure what the big hook is, why they're stuck in there. Either way, I'm really looking forward to catching up with it soon. Biosphere co-stars Mark Duplass & Sterling K. Brown. Cohabiting theaters this July - take a look. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'The Last Rider' Doc About the 1989 Tour de France

The Last Rider Trailer
"Everything that I dreamed of was taken away when I was shot." Roadside has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled The Last Rider, from acclaimed doc filmmaker Alex Holmes. This premiered at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival last year, and is getting a proper release in theaters later in June. Timed with the start of this year's Tour de France, it's opening a few weeks before the race begins in July. The film tells a remarkable sports story. Greg LeMond, who in 1986 became the first non-European professional cyclist to win the Tour de France, recovered from a near-fatal shooting during an off-season hunting trip, to win the 1989 Tour de France in Paris on the Champs-Élysées in dramatic style, winning by only 8 seconds, the closest ever margin of victory. Directed by Alex Holmes and featuring exclusive interviews with LeMond and his wife Kathy as well as, never before seen footage, The Last Rider is an exhilarating portrait of one of the greatest athletes of our time. From the looks of it, we really should be idolizing LeMond and his passion. // Continue Reading ›

Review: Rob Marshall's 'The Little Mermaid' Enriches the Original

The Little Mermaid Review
Yet another Disney live-action remake, yet another short preamble about the original flick before diving into this new one. For me personally, The Little Mermaid from 1989 was not an animated movie that marked my childhood. The memorable songs, underwater musical sequences, and the iconic animal characters kept my recent rewatch enjoyable enough, but unfortunately, the superficial, abrupt narrative and the extremely underdeveloped character arcs leave a lot to be desired. These are some of the details that I hoped might be improved in the modern live-action remake, which contains an extra hour on its runtime... Claiming that a remake matches or surpasses the original will always be controversial. And if it's related to movies that deeply impacted different generations, the nostalgia factor comes into play and blinds viewers who feel the almost uncontrollable need to protect "their film" against any other positive opinion about the new version. // Continue Reading ›

Official US Trailer for Funkadelic Friendship Film 'Amanda' from Italy

Amanda Trailer
"It just so happens that I'm looking for a best friend." Oscilloscope Labs in the US has revealed an official US trailer for an indie film from Italy titled Amanda, a wacky drama about a young woman who prefers to stay by herself at home. This first premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Toronto and Tromsø Film Festivals. It will be opening in July in a few art house theaters if anyone is curious about it. Amanda, age 24, lives mostly isolated and has never had any friends, even if it's the thing she wants the most. Amanda chooses her new mission to accomplish now - to convince her childhood friend to believe that they are still best friends. A playful, provocative feature debut from writer / director Carolina Cavalli. Benedetta Porcaroli stars as the titular Amanda, with a small Italian cast including Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Margherita Missoni, Michele Bravi, and Monica Nappo. This definitely looks kooky and clever, offering up some fresh commentary on Italian society. It's definitely worth a quick look at least. // Continue Reading ›

Hilarious Arnold Action Figure Commercial for His New 'FUBAR' Series

Arnold Action Figure Trailer
"He's ready to risk it all to protect his family... and save the world!" Ha! Dang this is pretty funny. Netflix has posted an amusing throwback action figure commercial promo video for the FUBAR spy comedy action series. It just started streaming this past weekend (view here), and they're trying to build the buzz with some clever viral marketing stunts. Arnold Schwarzenegger's FUBAR is a global spy adventure - when a father & daughter learn that they’ve each secretly been working as CIA Operatives for years, they realize their entire relationship has been a lie and they truly don’t know one another at all. It's pretty much a True Lies sequel. FUBAR stars Arnold, along with Monica Barbaro, Milan Carter, Gabriel Luna, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Barbara Eve Harris, Aparna Brielle, Andy Buckley, and Jay Baruchel. I'm smiling at how much they pack into this 90 second video, with good jokes about Arnold being the Terminator, his old age, the title "FUBAR", and more. This actually does make me want to tune in. // Continue Reading ›

Official Trailer for 'Hidden Strike' Starring John Cena & Jackie Chan

Hidden Strike Trailer
"I'm just taking back what they owe us..." XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for Hidden Strike, an intense new action movie set in Iraq following a special ops team trying to escape safely, like so many other films being made right now. Originally called S.N.A.F.U. or Project X-traction, the Chinese production is set to launch sometime later this year. When an oil refinery in Iraq is attacked, Jackie Luo, a Chinese security professional, is tasked with keeping the company's employees safe. When Luo discovers that the attackers' intent is to steal the oil – he gets the help of Chris Van Horne, an American former Marine, and together they try to stop them and escape to the safety of the Green Zone. Starring John Cena, Jackie Chan, Pilou Asbæk, Amadeus Serafini, Minghao Hou, and Zhenwei Wang. This looks like Mad Max meets Rush Hour set in... Iraq? They're all out of ideas, but had to make another action flick anyway. Maybe it'll be fun? // Continue Reading ›

French Animated Film 'Nina And The Hedgehog's Secret' Promo Trailer

Nina And The Hedgehog's Secret Trailer
"Nobody will stop me from saving him!" A festival promo trailer has premiered for an indie animated film made in France called Nina And The Hedgehog's Secret, also known as Nina et le Secret du Hérisson in French. It's screening in a few weeks at the Annecy Film Festival in France, hence why this new trailer is debuting just before its unveiling at the fest. The adorable animated feature is about a young girl on a rescue mission and her hedgehog friend who helps motivate her. Another reminder to discover the classic animated film Hedgehog in the Fog. Nina's life turned upside down since her father lost his job in a factory following embezzlement made by the foreman. With her friend, she embarks on a life-saving quest which leads to the discovery of a hidden treasure in the factory. With the voices of Guillaume Canet and Audrey Tautou. It looks charming and cute, but the voice performances and script seem pretty bad - from what it's this trailer. // Continue Reading ›

New US Trailer for UK Series 'Somewhere Boy' About a Sheltered Teen

Somewhere Boy Trailer
"I need to see the man who did this me, 'cause I don't know what I'm doing." Hulu has revealed a new US trailer for a British series titled Somewhere Boy, which seems to be a fun riff on the more popular title Nowhere Boy. It already played on BBC last year in the UK, but it is only now coming to the US - available for streaming in early June on Hulu. Here's the intro to this one: Daniel F. Harris has lived inside almost his entire life. He's always believed the world was full of monsters – the monsters that took his mum. For nearly 20 years, he and his dad Steve have stayed in, listening to old records and watching movies that always had a happy ending – and Danny was happy too. But one day that life shatters in an instant, and Danny has to take his first tentative steps into the outside world. Suddenly he has to come to terms with a whole world he didn’t know existed. This stars Lewis Gribben as Danny, with Samuel Bottomley, Rory Keenan, Lisa McGrillis, Johann Myers, Samuel Mckenna, Jamie Michie, and Gethin Alderman. It earned some rave reviews in the UK, and it looks like a very strong original story about how harsh the real world can be... // Continue Reading ›

Must See Full Trailer for Boots Riley's Giant Man Series 'I'm A Virgo'

I'm A Virgo Trailer
"You are a 13 foot tall Black man – they fear you." Prime Video has dropped the full-length official trailer for the series I'm a Virgo, the latest creation from the ingeniously creative mind of Boots Riley. Set for a streaming debut on June 23rd soon - really looking forward to this. It's his follow-up to the wacky hit Sorry to Bother You, featuring another outlandish concept that might actually make for a compelling watch. "Even when you're thirteen feet tall, there's still some growing up to do." The series is about Cootie, a 13-foot tall young Black man in Oakland, California. His parents have kept him at home all these years, but when he finally goes out into the world he learns about all the good and bad sides of it. Jharrel Jerome stars as Cootie, with a cast including Brett Gray, Kara Young, Allius Barnes, Olivia Washington, and Mike Epps. This looks even wilder and crazier than I was expecting! I'm glad to see Boots taking this concept and running with it, going as far as they can with the story of: "what if a giant Black man really existed?" I'm IN. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: Awesomely Dark Animated Short 'Mr. Pete & the Iron Horse'

Mr. Pete & the Iron Horse Short Film
This is awesome!! Another excellent creation from the ingenious minds at the Swiss animation studio known as YK Animation, based in Bern. Cannes 2023: 'Perfect Days' in Tokyo are Simple Yet Still Enriching

Perfect Days Review
Everyone knows that famous Lou Reed song that goes, "Oh it's such a perfect day! I'm glad I spend it with you..." This timeless classic tune is where this film's title Perfect Days is from, but it's also an important part of the film - it's one of songs that Hirayama listens to a few times while at home or driving around in his little van. Perfect Days is one of the latest narrative feature films created by iconic German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire), a passion project that he has been working on for years. It just premiered in the Main Competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and the wonderful Japanese actor Kōji Yakusho won the Best Actor prize at the end of the festival. It's without a doubt one of my favorite films from Cannes, and Yakusho absolutely deserves this award. The film reminds me in many ways of Jim Jarmusch's Paterson, one of my all-time fave Cannes premieres - both are poetic and quietly moving, while also being charismatic and nuanced in their deep understanding of the simpler lives of blue collar workers. // Continue Reading ›

Full Trailer for Leslie Iwerks' Hollywood Doc '100 Years of Warner Bros'

100 Years of Warner Bros Trailer
"They were always the studio that took risks." As part of its anniversary, Warner Bros made and released a documentary film titled 100 Years of Warner Bros. This actually just premiered in the Cannes Classics section of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where they usually show docs about the filmmaking industry. The doc is being released as a streaming series on Max, and is available to watch already. 100 Years of Warner Bros. takes a historical look at the powerful legacy of one of America’s leading Hollywood studios. The doc explores the origin, evolution and endurance of Warner Bros. – from a family affair to a global juggernaut – as it celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023. Featuring legendary filmmakers, actors and executives with the vision, the moxie and the talent to create some of the most indelible stories that have made a lasting impact on the world. Directed by Academy Award and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks, with narration by Morgan Freeman and clips from iconic films & hit TV series. We've featured a few other 100 Years of WB tributes, but this one is the actual doc with tons of guests. It's just extra sad that David Zaslav has to sully their good name and reputation right at this time, really not a good look for the studio. Oh well. // Continue Reading ›

Official UK Trailer for 'Mother and Son' Film About a Family in France

Mother and Son Trailer
"You're in France now. We're here to help. We're family." Picturehouse in the UK has revealed the official trailer for a French indie drama titled Mother and Son in English, originally known as Un Petit Frère in French. This first premiered at last year's 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the competition (though it didn't win anything), and will open this summer in UK cinemas. Beautifully tender and deeply moving, Mother and Son is a vibrant portrait of a family told from multiple perspectives. Centred on a young mother and her two sons after their move from the Ivory Coast to France, the film is an impassioned tale of shifting tensions and identity from writer-director Léonor Serraille (also of Jeune Femme). It also played at the Vienna and Stockholm Fests, and at the American French Film Festival last fall. Starring Annabelle Lengronne as Rose, with Stéphane Bak, Kenzo Sambin, Sidy Fofana, Ahmed Sylla, and Milan Doucansi. It looks like a loving, authentic story of the experience of moving to France and growing up as immigrants in Paris. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: The Magical Brilliance of Alice Rohrwacher's 'La Chimera'

La Chimera Review
The tombaroli are my Palme d'Or picks from 2023! One of the best films that premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival is the sensational La Chimera, the latest creation from acclaimed Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher (best known for her previous films The Wonders and Happy as Lazzaro). It's been five years since her last feature film, and it's worth the wait, because it's clear she puts in so much time and effort into meticulously crafting and honing these films that each one needs time to develop into something special. La Chimera is another magical realism adventure, similar to Happy as Lazzaro with plenty of fantasy elements and a vintage Italian feel, but with an entirely different story about a band of tomb raiding archeologists. It's unlike anything I've ever seen, an astoundingly original creation that can't really be compared to much else before. I've already noticed some hasty comparisons to Indiana Jones (also shown in Cannes) but these two movies are so unique. I'm actually still buzzing from the initial high of experiencing La Chimera in Cannes. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: 'How to Have Sex' Party Film Doesn't Discuss Anything

How to Have Sex Review
What can we learn and how do we become better if we refuse to have any conversations? One of the biggest disappointments for me at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival is this party film called How to Have Sex. Aside from the fact that this is not what the film is about (more accurately it should be called How to Not Have a Good Time Partying With Your Friends), it's a film that wants to have a conversation that it never does end up having. It seems that they had so much more fun making this than they did trying to create a compelling discussion within this film, and of course this means audiences will have "fun" with it as well. But that's not what the filmmaker is hoping for, there's a much more painful, sad story being told here. And in that regard, she fails at making an engaging, intellectually relevant film. It's frustrating in its blatant stubbornness, and never provides anything worthwhile to consider for viewers of any age, only that friends are bad influences. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023 Awards: Justine Triet's 'Anatomy of a Fall' Takes Palme

Cannes 2023 Palme d'Or
Winners of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival awards, including the coveted Palme d'Or, were revealed at a glamorous ceremony in Cannes, France this weekend. The awards included many of my favorite films at the festival, though my top pick didn't end up with the Palme. French filmmaker Justine Triet took home the top prize - her new film Anatomy of a Fall won the Palme d'Or this year, following up Ruben Ostlund's second Palme win for The Triangle of Sadness last year. A number of other critics picks also won awards: The Zone of Interest won the Grand Prix (second place) though it really should've taken home the Palme instead. Aki Kaurismäki's delightful romantic charmer Fallen Leaves won the Jury Prize. My favorite win of the night went to the Japanese actor Kōji Yakusho, who is transcendent in the poetic drama Perfect Days. All-in-all a solid amount of best of the fest winners this year. Freaky Possessed Fiancé Horror Film 'Mother, May I?' Official Trailer

Mother, May I? Trailer
"A boy's best friend is his mother." Dark Sky Films has unveiled an official trailer for the indie horror film called Mother, May I?, made by filmmaker Laurence Vannicelli. This premiered recently a genre festival, and opens on VOD to watch this summer in July. When his fiancé, Anya, starts behaving like his recently deceased mother, Emmett is forced into a nightmarish game of therapy... or is it a possession? He then tries mushrooms to let go of his trauma from his past involving his mother, but it seems to make things worse. In this trippy horror film, actors Kyle Gallner and Holland Roden experience a strange, Oedipal nightmare that involves a dead mom, some magic mushrooms, and an unexpected transformation. The small indie cast also includes Michael Giannone and Chris Mulkey. Burden of Proof Doc Trailer
"I think my mother knows what happens... My father scared her to keep this secret." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a chilling docu-drama series titled Burden of Proof, from filmmaker Cynthia Hill. This is a documentary about a real cold case, but it's shot and presented as a docu-drama with recreations and slick cinematography that makes it all look like a fictional HBO series. Decades after his sister disappeared, a brother is determined to find the truth no matter the cost. Shot in cinema verité over seven years, the series unfolds in real time. It focuses on a man named Stephen who launches his own investigation into what he fears may have transpired in his parents' house back in 1987 the night his sister Jennifer vanished and a suspicious handwritten note left as the only clue. Cannes 2023: Anh Hung Tran's 'The Pot-au-Feu' is Gastronomic Bliss

"Eating is not merely a material pleasure... Eating well gives a spectacular joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship." –Elsa Schiaparelli. This is the first major masterpiece premiere at Cannes that I've encountered this year (so far) after watching 21 films at the festival. The Pot-au-Feu is Vietnamese-French director Anh Hung Tran's latest feature, an exquisite voyage through the world of French cuisine and gastronomy. It's bliss. Food heaven. I spent two hours in heaven and returned to tell the tale. There isn't a single shot in it that isn't perfect composed. There isn't a single scene I would change. It deserves a perfect score - the only one I've given so far in Cannes. The only issues that have come to mind since it ended have been dismissed after further analysis and discussion (will save this for another time as most of it involves spoilers that I won't publish now). New US Trailer for Korean Call Center Drama 'Aloners' About Isolation

Aloners Trailer
"Do you make a habit of being pissed off all the time?" Film Movement has revealed an official US trailer for an indie thriller from Korea called Aloners, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Hong Seong-eun. This premiered in 2021 and opened in Korea that year, while also playing at the Toronto, Zurich, San Sebastian, and Hamburg Film Festivals. It's finally getting a release on VOD in this US this summer - after waiting a few years. Jina is the top employee at a call center, despite talking to customers all day, she has shut out the world beyond her headset. When training a friendly new hire, her icy armor is threatened forcing her to confront why she isolates herself. The film is riffing on the Korean 'honjok' – a phenomenon of young people who live alone and skirt social interaction – to examine the personal traumas of loss and alienation. This stars Gong Seung-yeon, Jung Da-eun, Seo Hyun-woo, Park Jeong-hak, and Kim Hannah. It looks intriguing, though lacking in style... Skull Island is a thrilling adventure series that follows a group of good-hearted explorers who fish a drowning girl out of the ocean, having no idea that they’ve found themselves on a collision course with Skull Island — the most dangerous place on Earth — the mysterious home to strange beasts and terrifying monsters, including the greatest titan of them all: Kong. They end up shipwrecked on the island and will battle its many gnarly creatures. The voice cast includes Nicolas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, and Betty Gilpin. It's set after the movie, and looks like a fun creation acting as a standalone survival story. We're still waiting for the epic Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sequel to land in theaters next year. This will be streaming on Netflix this summer. Fire it up. // Continue Reading ›

One Final Trailer for DC's 'The Flash' Movie About Bats & Supes & Barry

The Flash Trailer
"Batman - what do we do?!" "We try not to die..." Warner Bros has released their third & final trailer for The Flash movie - opening in theaters this June. Are you ready? How does this look? Worlds collide when Barry Allen uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a new reality. This movie about The Flash is also about Batman as well as Supergirl, filling in for Superman who is missing in this alternate reality. Ezra Miller returns starring as Barry Miller, along with Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, plus Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Kiersey Clemons, Rudy Mancuso, Luke Brandon Field. And Michael Keaton rocking the screen again as Bruce Wayne / Batman - "from an alternate universe." Very nice use of the Pink Floyd song in this trailer, playing up the "trippiness" of this whole timeline-bending story. There's also two new posters added below. I've seen enough trailers - now I really want to enjoy it on the big screen. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: Wes Anderson's Desert Trip to Downbeat 'Asteroid City'

Asteroid City Review
I'm not usually a fan of writing a review while admitting that I haven't fully figured out the film and need to analyze and discuss it further. However, I need to get my thoughts out about this one – and something is bothering me about the film anyway that I need to get off my chest. WTF is going on in this film?! I've been a Wes Anderson fan for as long as I can remember, with my personal faves being Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I was not particularity fond of The French Dispatch, which premiered at Cannes 2021, it's just too dense and loquacious for me. Anderson's latest creation premiering in Cannes is a strange sci-fi drama called Asteroid City, set in the 1950s following an ensemble of eccentric characters stuck in this fictional desert town. It has all the usual quaint, delectable Wes Anderson ingredients thrown in – from precise camera movements to distinctly vibrant set design to off-beat characters delivering lines without skipping a beat. However, this one didn't turn out. There's just something oddly dispirited about it... // Continue Reading ›

Three Badass Ladies Action Thriller 'Sheroes' Trailer Set in Thailand

Sheroes Trailer
"She's crazy!" Paramount has revealed an official trailer for Sheroes, an action thriller comedy arriving in theaters and on VOD to watch this June. This is one of these pretend "female empowerment" movies that is actually written and directed by a man, who has never directed a movie before (only produced them), which does not bode well. When four thick-as-thieves friends arrive in Thailand for a hedonistic adventure, they quickly find themselves in over their heads when one of them gets kidnapped by a notorious drug lord. As they fight to stay alive and protect one another, they employ a unique set of skills in a heart-pumping battle for survival. The movie stars Sasha Luss, Wallis Day, and Isabelle Fuhrman as three main ladies, plus Jack Kesy, Joseph Angelo, and Skai Jackson. Plus an unnamed Thai cast. So they stole that line from Taken and they're not ashamed about it? This looks so annoyingly dumb, and not even entertaining either. // Continue Reading ›

DreamWorks Animation's 'Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken' Trailer #2

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Trailer
"You have powers beyond your imagination!" DreamWorks Animation has debuted a second trailer for upcoming surprise summer movie called Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, opening in theaters this June after The Little Mermaid. This summer, DWA dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teen who discovers she's a royal member of the mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed. Lana Condor stars as the voice of Ruby, a 16-year-old desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, who confronts a beautiful, popular new girl that just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken features an extraordinary cast that includes Emmy winner Colman Domingo as Ruby's supportive dad, Sam Richardson as Ruby's enthusiastic uncle, and Blue Chapman as Ruby’s cool little brother, plus the voices of Toni Collette, Jaboukie Young-White, Annie Murphy, Will Forte, Nicole Byer, Ramona Young, as well as the great Jane Fonda. Why does this look so good?! I'm even more interested in seeing this than I am Little Mermaid, as it looks original and clever, flipping a story we think we know into something else. I'm curious. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: 'Mars Express' is an Incredible Animated Sci-Fi Creation

Mars Express Review
Every year at the Cannes Film Festival, there's one extraordinary animated film that quietly premieres in one of the side sections. Some of my other favorites from the past are: I Lost My Body (2019), The Summit of the Gods (2021), and Little Nicholas: Happy as Can Be (2022). This year's big animation discovery is a French animated feature called Mars Express, a hard sci-fi creation from director Jérémie Périn. At the fest there's also the animated film Robot Dreams, which I already reviewed and it's wonderful as well, but this one really blew me away. Both of these films involve robots, which is a bit of a fun coincidence. Mars Express is pretty much a French update on the iconic Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell, featuring a noir story involving androids and artificial intelligence and hacking and robots galore. While it's not as great as GITS, it's as close as anyone has come in YEARS to making another great "what's hidden in the code" movie. // Continue Reading ›

New US Trailer for 'Persian Lessons' WWII Drama Featuring Lars Eidinger

Persian Lessons Trailer
"You just make sure the murderers eat well." Cohen Media Group has revealed another official US trailer for the German WWII drama Persian Lessons, made by Ukrainian filmmaker Vadim Perelman. This first premiered back in 2020 just before the pandemic at the Berlin Film Festival, before getting lost in all the shutdowns. It played at various fests over the next few years, and opened in Germany in late 2020 already. The US release has finally been set - over three years later - for this June in select theaters. Gilles (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) is arrested by Nazis alongside other Jews and sent to a camp in Germany. He narrowly avoids execution by swearing to the guards that he is not Jewish, but Persian. This lie temporarily saves him, but Gilles gets assigned a life-or-death mission: to teach Farsi to the Head of Camp Koch. Through an ingenious trick, he manages to survive by inventing words of "Farsi" every day and teaching them to Koch. A harrowing story of survival during the Holocaust. The cast features Lars Eidinger as Koch, Jonas Nay, David Schütter, Alexander Beyer, Andreas Hofer, Leonie Benesch, and Luisa-Céline Gaffron. This looks like another harrowing film about survival, again showing how ruthless and evil the Nazis were. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: Aki Kaurismäki's Simple, Sweet Love Story 'Fallen Leaves'

Fallen Leaves Review
For those that are not already familiar with Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki's films, I will say that they are an acquired taste. His dry wit and minimalistic dead pan style definitely won't work for everyone, and some viewers will be left wanting. I will admit that I'm not a fan of all of his films either - some of them I like much more than others. However, if there's a particular story or something appealing about one of them that interests you - it's worth watching just to enjoy some international cinema that is unique. His latest film is called Fallen Leaves (originally Kuolleet Lehdet in Finnish) and it just premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where Kaurismäki is a regular. He's been attending Cannes (and tons of other festivals) since 1996 with Drifting Clouds. After so many heavy, dark, deep dramas, it's a joy to watch & enjoy something so upbeat and fresh and light. It's also a breezy 81 minutes, which is just the right length for this sweet love story. I can recommend this film to anyone looking for some feel good Finnish romance vibes at the cinema. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: Finding the Truth in Jessica Hausner's Film 'Club Zero'

Club Zero Review
To believe in Club Zero, you must accept that your truth is not the right truth. The truth you knew before is no longer the truth. And you must have faith that you can achieve what you once thought was not possible. This is the way of Club Zero. Don't question it, just accept it, believe in it... Austrian film director Jessica Hausner returns to the 2023 Cannes Film Festival with a new film titled Club Zero, an intriguing thriller about a group of students who join a special program studying with Ms. Novak. She introduces a concept to them called "Conscious Eating" – which they learn is about taking the time to slow down, think about, and closely observe what they are eating, so that they'll eat less, become healthier, more energized, and perhaps save the world in the process (there's just too much eating going on). The students are weary at first, but quickly take to her ideas and slowly come to believe fully in her conscious eating concept. It is absolutely a commentary on religion and cults and brainwashing, but what else is this film digging into beyond just that? // Continue Reading ›

Lovely Full Trailer for 'The Miracle Club' Movie Featuring Laura Linney

The Miracle Club Trailer
"What do you want to be going to Lourdes for anyway?" Sony Classics has debuted their full official US trailer for an Irish dramedy titled The Miracle Club, the latest from Irish filmmaker Thaddeus O'Sullivan. This is premiering at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival before it opens in select theaters this July. It looks like good fun! There's just one dream for the women of Ballygar to taste freedom and escape the gauntlet of domestic life: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes (see on Google Maps). Lourdes, a picturesque French town and a place of miracles, a magnet for 6 million visitors each year from across the globe. Have you ever been? With a little benevolent interference from their local priest, close friends Lily, Eileen and Dolly, who are funny, messy, flawed, and vocal, get their ticket to go on the humorous, blissful, and exhilarating journey of a lifetime. The film stars Laura Linney, Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, Agnes O'Casey, with Stephen Rea. This will likely play better with your parents - but still worth a look anyway. // Continue Reading ›

First Official Trailer for 'The Color Purple' Musical with Taraji P. Henson

The Color Purple Trailer
"All I had was my sister... She was the only one ever loved me." WB has revealed the first official trailer for The Color Purple, a new adaptation of the beloved, triumphant musical of the same name. Back in 1985, Steven Spielberg directed a non-musical version of this story (also called The Color Purple) which became a Broadway musical that first opened in 2005. He's producing this new version, too. This new updated take is also based on the musical, bringing it to theaters once again on Christmas Day at the end of 2023. It's a story of the life-long struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s - focusing on two sisters and their lives. The Color Purple stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, plus Fantasia Barrino (in her major motion picture debut). Well, I must say this looks absolutely magical and stunning and extravagant! It should be a very good experience at the movies when this opens on Christmas this year. // Continue Reading ›

New TV Trailer for Marvel's 'Secret Invasion' Series with Hidden Skrulls

Secret Invasion Trailer
"An invasion is here Rhodey... and we can't even tell who the invaders are?!" Only one month left until this arrives for streaming. Marvel has revealed another new 60-second TV trailer for their Secret Invasion series, debuting in June. The first trailer launched during D23 last year, and the second trailer landed back in April. In the series, Nick Fury returns to Earth and teams up with Talos to prevent a Skrull invasion - the "Secret Invasion" since they are a race of aliens that can change into anyone. This crossover thriller focuses on the shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. Samuel L. Jackson stars as Nick Fury, with Ben Mendelsohn also back as the Skrull warrior Talos, Don Cheadle as Rhodey in a key role, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, plus Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Martin Freeman, Dermot Mulroney, Carmen Ejogo, and Olivia Colman. This doesn't look as good as the big Marvel movies, but it looks like Fury is ready to unleash hell on these green-skinned alien invader bastards. What do you think? // Continue Reading ›

Festival Promo Trailer for Wim Wender's Japan-Set Film 'Perfect Days'

Perfect Days Trailer
"Next time is next time." The Match Factory has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Perfect Days, the latest narrative film made by the prolific German filmmaker Wim Wenders. He's been making a mix of docs and features recently, and this is one of two new films premiering at Cannes this year. Perfect Days is set in Japan and the film follows a toilet cleaner who remiscences about the simple beauty of life. Yes, for real, but it looks so lovely. Here's a description: The film is a deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us. It follows Hirayama, who seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. Starring Koji Yakusho, with Arisa Nakano, Tokio Emoto, Arisa Nakano, Aoi Yamada, and Yumi Aso. I'm really looking forward to catching this in Cannes, and I hope it will find a US distributor who will handle it with care and love, too. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: 'Robot Dreams' is a Delightful Animated New York Story

Robot Dreams
One of the surprise animated films premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this year is called Robot Dreams, a Spanish production made by Catalan filmmaker named Pablo Berger. The delightful animated movie is an entirely dialogue-free story set in the 1980s in New York City, following a dog character known simply as "DOG" as he builds a relationship with his new robot friend. This is Pablo Berger's first animated film, after making the features Blancanieves and Abracadabra previously. It's a super sweet, uplifting story about friendship and even though there's not a single spoken word in the entire 90 minute film, it's still captivating throughout anyway. It's one of these off-beat discoveries from a film festival that I'm glad I took the time to watch. And more good news - Neon has already acquired the film for a US release later in 2023. // Continue Reading ›

"A bit of San Juan fun won't hurt anybody." Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for another Spanish romantic dramedy called Through My Window: Across the Sea, originally known as A Través del Mar. It's actually a sequel to the Spanish sultry romance called Through My Window from last year, about a connection between Ares and Raquel - two extremely attractive Spanish people. Now the summer is finally here and the long-awaited reunion. Will the distance be a problem for their relationship? The film stars Julio Peña, Clara Galle, Natalia Azahara, Guillermo Lasheras, Emilia Lazo, Eric Masip, Hugo Arbués, and Andrea Chaparro. Cannes 2023: 'About Dry Grasses' is Yet Another Profound Ceylan Film

About Dry Grasses Review
Anyone who has been watching the films of the extraordinary Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan knows that he is a master. It's a fact. There's no debating or denying that he is one of the best Turkish filmmakers in cinema history. His ninth feature film, titled About Dry Grasses (which is also known as Kuru Otlar Üstüne in Turkish), is premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in France this summer. He has already won numerous awards at Cannes and other fests, including a Grand Prix for Once Upon a Time in Anatolia in 2011. There's no questioning his storytelling talents, it's only a matter of which films are better (or worse) and which films connect deeply with each individual viewer. Everyone will have a different relationship with each Ceylan film. He is consistently brilliant at writing, and every one of his film contains numerous scenes full of layered dialogue discussing different aspects of humanity. From our many flaws and imperfections, to relationships, politics, human nature, to the differences between cities and rural towns, and everything else. // Continue Reading ›

Cannes 2023: Glazer's Unsettling Holocaust Film 'The Zone of Interest'

The Zone of Interest Review
We all know the Holocaust is an atrocity and there have already been hundreds of films made about it. The only other recent film to offer something new and different was the Cannes 2015 feature Son of Saul, which ended up winning the Oscar after premiering at the festival. After years of working on his project, British director Jonathan Glazer brings his latest film to Cannes - The Zone of Interest. It is another Holocaust film, very clearly that and not much else, telling a profoundly unsettling and hard-to-watch story about a German family living right next to a concentration camp. It is overpowering in its clarity and simplicity as a film - never showing any of the atrocities happening at the camp, focusing solely on this German family and nothing more. It is the cinematic epitome of the iconic phrase "the banality of evil," originally coined by writer Hannah Arendt after her investigations into the Holocaust and Nuremberg trial. It boldly eschews the caricature-esque depiction of Nazis and reminds us the truth about how casual they were being despicable. // Continue Reading ›

Full Trailer for 'Shooting Stars' LeBron in High School Basketball Movie

Shooting Stars Trailer
"He can win you a state championship - guaranteed." NBC's Peacock has revealed a main official trailer for a film titled Shooting Stars, a docu-drama event about LeBron's high school days. This looks way better than most are probably expecting. Based on the book by LeBron James & the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Friday Night Lights, Buzz Bissinger, Shooting Stars is the inspiring origin story of a legendary basketball superhero, revealing how LeBron James and his childhood friends become the #1 high school team in the country. This early fete would launch James’s breathtaking career as a four-time NBA Champion, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. The film stars Wood Harris, newcomer Marquis "Mookie" Cook as a young LeBron, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalie Paul, Algee Smith, with Dermot Mulroney, Khalil Everage, Sterling "Scoot" Henderson, Katlyn Nichol, and Avery S. Wills Jr. This looks crazy good! Maybe it's just an excellent trailer, but I'm impressed by all of this footage. A story about friendship and determination and sportsmanship and growing up. It is seriously worth a look. // Continue Reading ›

First Look Teaser for Soderbergh's NYC Kidnapping Series 'Full Circle'

Full Circle Teaser Trailer
"They're all hiding sh*t!" Oh I bet they are. HBO has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a new series titled Full Circle, yet another crime thriller joining the hundreds already created for and streaming on streaming networks these days. It'll be streaming in July, and I'm sure the full trailer will give us a few more hints. "Everything is connected." The vague synopsis doesn't reveal much - only setting up the crime story at the core of this Max series. An investigation into a botched kidnapping uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City. The cast includes Soderbergh's Kimi star Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, CCH Pounder, and Dennis Quaid. Cannes 2023: Thomas Cailley's One-of-a-Kind 'The Animal Kingdom'

The Animal Kingdom Review
One of the first great discoveries at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival so far (we're only just getting going!) is this French film titled The Animal Kingdom, originally known as Le Règne Animal in French. Made by the French director Thomas Cailley, the upbeat genre film takes place in a world where humans suddenly start turning into animals. It's not as cheesy or as a dumb as it sounds when I put it like that, it's much more realistic and gritty, utilizing impressive prosthetics and SFX to show the day-to-day progress as humans very slowly begin to transform into beasts. The current title is The Animal Kingdom but I'd rather call it We Are All Animals instead, which is not meant to be a spoiler. When the film opens in Paris, the world has already started to accept that this transformation is happening (randomly to different people) but they can't really explain it and don't really know what to make of it. The story focuses on a teenage boy and his father. // Continue Reading ›

Watch: 'Rushmore' Spoofs from 1999 of 'Truman Show' + 'Armageddon'

Rushmore 1999 MTV Movie Awards
"We're gonna blow it up, sir, but we're gonna need the best dynamite man imaginable." So find that man and save Earth! Found in someone's dusty video collection comes this comedy bit that originally aired at the end of the 1990s. Wes Anderson's big breakout film was Rushmore, his second feature film after his indie debut Bottle Rocket. It opened in theaters in early 1999 after initially premiering at the 1998 Toronto Film Festival. The film was a massive indie hit at the time, earning over $17 million at the box office that year. In celebration of its success, the cast were recruited to make skits for the 1999 MTV Movie Awards to help promote the event. Someone found this old video and uploaded it on YouTube for all of us to enjoy. I didn't even know they made this! I'm sure most forgot. Must Watch Official Trailer for 'Theater Camp' Mockumentary Comedy

Theater Camp Trailer
"These people are really weird." Searchlight Pictures has revealed their fun first official trailer for the indie comedy Theater Camp, a mockumentary in the same vein as Waiting for Guffman or Best in Show. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was a massive hit, one of the best of the fest, I loved it and raved about it in my own review as well. The acclaimed faux documentary film follows the eccentric staff of a rundown theater camp in upstate New York, as they band together with the beloved founder's bro-y son to keep the camp afloat, when she falls into a coma right before the summer session is set to begin. They attempt to put on a masterpiece to save their theater camp known as "AdirondACTS". The ensemble cast of this comedy includes Noah Galvin, Molly Gordon, Ben Platt, Jimmy Tatro, Patti Harrison, Nathan Lee Graham, Ayo Edebiri, Owen Thiele, and Alan Kim, with Amy Sedaris. Even if you're not a theater nerd (like everyone in this film), you'll still laugh your ass off at this film. I had such a great time with it, especially with an audience. Don't miss Theater Camp when it opens this summer. // Continue Reading ›

Teaser Trailer for Animated 'Nimona' Movie with Chloe Grace Moretz

Nimona Trailer
"This is the part where you run." Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser for animated movie Nimona, an action adventure thriller from filmmakers Nick Bruno & Troy Quane (of Spies in Disguise). Originally a production of Blue Sky Studios, a former subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, best known for creating the Ice Age and Rio franchises, it was originally set to be directed by Patrick Osborne, with an initial release date of 2020. Following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the production received pushback from Disney's new leadership due to the film's LGBTQ themes, then was canceled due to Blue Sky's closure in April 2021. Annapurna Pictures later revived the project, with Bruno & Quane taking over directing duties, DNEG on the animation, and Netflix releasing it. Nimona, a teenager with the power to shapeshift, is targeted by a knight for assassination. The knight's mission to kill Nimona becomes complicated when he is accused of a crime, and learns that Nimona may be able to exonerate him. Starring the voices of Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, and RuPaul Charles.
