Sundance 2022: A Vietnamese 'E.T.' - Kids Sci-Fi Adventure 'Maika'

Maika Review

Hidden in the "Kids" section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival is this kooky, cheesy, fun kids movie called Maika from Vietnam. I don't even know how or why the festival decided to include this movie, because it's barely good enough to be considered a TV movie, but it does slide right into the so-bad-it's-good territory a few times. As ridiculous and impractical as this movie is, it's honestly so likable and so charming. One geeky Vietnamese kid gets caught up in an adventure with an alien girl who helps him save the day and take out some bullies. I can't help but admit it's harmless "kids movie" fun and I'm glad I watched it; goofy cinema but worth it. For all the really bad scenes in this, there are some really wonderful scenes that balance things out. It's an entertaining, earnest sci-fi story with some truly mediocre VFX with its heart in the right place. ›››

Watch: Awesome 'Uncharted vs Tomb Raider vs Indiana Jones' Short

Uncharted vs Tomb Raider vs Indiana Jones

"Whoever opens my tomb shall unleash an invader more terrible than I." Whoa, what! This is a must watch 9-min short. More mashups like this, please! YouTube creator Devin Graham, aka "devinsupertramp", has created a kick ass fan-film. It's an action short film called Uncharted vs Tomb Raider vs Indiana Jones and that's also exactly what it is. These three adventure heroes cross paths in Uzbekistan, where this was filmed, on the hunt for a special item found inside a tomb. Starring Braxton McAllister as Nathan Drake, Michaela McAllister as Lara Croft, and Corbett McAllister as Indiana Jones. This is not some hack job mashup, this is an actual live-action film with people performing real stunts in real locations. And it's so much fun to watch! This is a blast. Stream it to your TV from YouTube, turn the volume up, and enjoy. ›››

Dutch Live-Action Film 'My Best Friend Anne Frank' Official Trailer

My Best Friend Anne Frank Trailer

"Do you promise to stay with me forever?" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a Dutch film titled My Best Friend Anne Frank, apparently the first ever Dutch movie made about Anne Frank, despite the fact that she lived there for most of her life. Based on the real-life friendship between Anne Frank and Hannah Goslar, from Nazi-occupied Amsterdam to their harrowing reunion in a concentration camp. This is labeled as "live-action" to differentiate it from the animated film that debuted last year called Where Is Anne Frank, also about Anne Frank and her imaginary best friend. This Dutch film follows Anne all the way to the camps where she eventually dies in early 1945. Starring Aiko Beemsterboer as Anne, Josephine Arendsen as Hannah, with Roeland Fernhout, Lottie Hellingman, Björn Freiberg, Hans Peterson, and Stefan de Walle. This adaptation looks more educational than anything, but it might still be a worthwhile watch. ›››

First Trailer for German Thriller 'The Forger' Premiering at Berlinale

The Forger Trailer

"Don't go looking at anybody but me." A festival promo trailer has been revealed for this German film The Forger, premiering at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival in just a few weeks playing in the Special Gala section. Based on a true story, German filmmaker Maggie Peren's new film centers on 21-year-old Cioma Schönhaus, a Jewish person living in Berlin in the 1940s. His very existence is threatened by the Nazis, but he won't let anyone take away his zest for life, especially not the Nazis. So he decides to "hide in plain sight" using the identity of a marine officer he creates, throwing himself into the city's nightlife. By day he makes fake IDs to save the lives of others, but it gets riskier and riskier. The filmmaker says this is "the story of a person who rebels against stigmatization. The regime of terror is present, but we do not offer the Nazis a platform. We see them through Cioma's eyes as we see everything through his eyes." That is a much better pitch for this than the official synopsis. This stars Louis Hofmann (from "Dark)" as Cioma, Jonathan Berlin, Luna Wedler, Nina Gummich, Marc Limpach, André Jung, & Yotam Ishay. Hopefully it should be good. ›››

Passionate Political Thriller from Palestine - 'Huda's Salon' US Trailer

Hany Abu-Assad Trailer

"Why did you betray your people?" IFC Films has revealed a new trailer for an indie from Palestine titled Huda's Salon, which premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival. It also played at other festivals last year including Philadelphia, Busan, Woodstock, Miami, and AFI Fest. Based on real events, Huda's Salon is a timely political drama about two women who find themselves in a dangerous and complex web of betrayal. While both of them navigate how far their loyalties will go—to family and country—Abu-Assad masterfully orchestrates the tensions into a crescendo. The film stars Ali Suliman, Maisa Abd Elhadi, Manal Awad, Kamel El Basha, Samer Bisharat, and Omar Abu Amer. This received some rave reviews from critics, saying the film is a "combination of moral quandary and ticking clock peril." It seem worth a watch. ›››

He's Back! Full Trailer for Netflix's 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' Movie

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Trailer

"50 years I've been waiting for this night… just to see him again." Netflix has fired up the gnarly official trailer for their new Texas Chain Saw Massacre film. It's officially titled Texas Chainsaw Massacre and will be streaming on Netflix starting this February. After nearly 50 years of hiding, Leatherface returns to terrorize a group of idealistic young friends that accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town. Much like last year's Ghostbusters, this skips everything else and it plays as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's original 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Leatherface only gets angry when people come home. This sequel stars Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, Jolyon Coy. Damn this looks brutal! The bus scene is going to be insane. Lots of blood and gore in here - watch out. ›››

Second Action-Packed Trailer for Amblin's Live-Action 'Halo' Series

Halo Live-Action Trailer

"What does one do with a superpower you're not sure you can trust?" Microsoft / Ambiln have debuted the full official trailer for the new live-action Halo series, which launches on Paramount+ in March. Developed by Amblin Television, Microsoft Studios, and Showtime Networks; it's showrun by Steven Kane (creator of "The Last Ship", producer on "The Closer" and "American Dad!"). The series' massive ensemble cast features Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, and Jen Taylor as Cortana, plus Natascha McElhone, Yerin Ha, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Olive Gray, Charlie Murphy, Kate Kennedy, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, Danny Sapani, and Ryan McParland. The original Halo game launched for Xbox in 2001, with many sequels along the way. Aliens threaten humanity in an epic 26th-century showdown. This definitely still looks like The Mandalorian but within the Halo universe, that's all fine if it works well. Not exactly the best footage, but better looking than most video game adaptations. Find the Halo, win the war. ›››

Sundance 2022 Awards: 'Nanny' & 'The Exiles' Win Grand Jury Prizes

Sundance 2022 Awards

The official awards for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, usually held in Park City, Utah every January, were announced this evening with a small ceremony held on social media. The festival continued on with an at-home online event after the in-person show in Utah was cancelled. Nonetheless, there were many great films to discover at the festival this year. Sundance gives Jury Awards and it also gives out Audience Awards, voted on by any and every viewer after they watch the film. The prizes this year are a completely surprising, eclectic mix of interesting films all around. None of what I was expecting, except for Cha Cha Real Smooth, but I'm glad to see the jury going with their gut(s) anyway. As always, if any of these films interest you, we hope you note them down and take the time to watch as soon as you can. All 2022 winners are listed below. ›››

Full Trailer for 'Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber' with Gordon-Levitt

Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber Trailer

"You know you're on your way up… when they slap a target on your back." Showtime has revealed the full official trailer for their series Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, launching streaming this February. Yet another dramatization of a tech business and all their craziness, following so many other new series like WeCrashed, too. Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber is the first installment of the Super Pumped anthology series in which each new season will explore a story that rocked the business world to its core and changed culture. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kyle Chandler, and Uma Thurman star in the true story behind the meteoric rise and fall of Uber founder, Travis Kalanick. With the help of a VC and board member Arianna Huffington, Kalanick forges the fledgling start-up into a multi-billion-dollar colossus. But every surge comes with a price. Also starring Kerry Bishé, Jon Bass, Babak Tafti, Bridgett Gao-Hollitt, and Elisabeth Shue. Yeah this looks pretty good so far, always fun to see Gordon-Levitt gettin' wild on that startup hype. ›››

Sundance 2022: An Inspiring Indigenous Story in 'The Territory' Doc

The Territory Review

Fight the power!! One of the best documentary films premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival is a story of an Indigenous tribe in the Amazon rainforest. The film is called The Territory, and it's made by an up-and-coming filmmaker named Alex Pritz, making his first feature, and it's produced by none other than Darren Aronofsky and his company Protozoa Pictures. The film features some of my favorite scenes in any doc film at the festival, following these people around their territory as they defend their land from non-Native invaders. The film very diligently and very empathetically establishes a dual narrative, and also very carefully uses the right words to describe how these Natives are being attacked by dangerous outsiders. I only caught up with this film late in the festival, after watching nearly 50 other films, and it still completely rocked me. Powerful filmmaking combined with a powerful must-tell story makes for an unforgettable film. ›››

Watch: A Terrific 3D Printed Stop-Motion Animated Short Called 'Ties'

Ties 3D Printed Short

Time to go see the world! Our friends at the website Short of the Week remind us that "short film is where innovative storytelling is born." And this is one of those shorts that will impress everyone! Ties is a short film made by a Russian animator / filmmaker named Dina Velikovskaya who now lives in Berlin. She has used various methods and special materials for her animated projects in the past, but this time she decided to experiment with 3D printing. What's it about? A young woman leaves home and sets off to see the world. But the parent–daughter relationship is so strong that, in the end, these ties become destructive. The film is made using the plastic material many 3D printers utilize, which she molds into various shapes to create the characters and scenes. Not only is it visually innovative, the story is quite moving, too. This short really is a wonderful creation, and hopefully it'll bring extra attention to Dina while she continues to make more films. ›››

Bad CGI Dinosaurs Family Adventure Movie 'Dinosaur Cove' Trailer

Dinosaur Cove Trailer

"I'm not making this up! And I'm not seeing things that aren't there…" Crystal Creek Media has debuted an official trailer for a cheesy family adventure movie called Dinosaur Cove, from the same director behind A Horse Called Bear, Courageous Love, Christmas Coupon, and Skydog previously. Reeling from the recent loss of his mother, Riley Harrison claims that he has seen a real dinosaur, to which his dad Wyatt and love interest Dr. Starr quickly write off. But the nefarious creators responsible for the creature and its release try to recover it and capture young Riley before the public finds out about their diabolical dino plans. The film stars Brayden Eaton, Jared Withrow, Holly Houk, Addilyn Houk, James Pilachowski, Emily Buckner, Ray Morgis, and Mo El-Zaatari. It looks like the kind of movie you want to avoid at all costs, unless you have kids obsessed with dinosaurs. There's only one good shot of this Pterodactyl in here anyway. ›››

Keeley Hawes in Sci-Fi Thriller Series 'The Midwich Cuckoos' Trailer

The Midwich Cuckoos Trailer

"It felt like… I was visited." "I can feel life growing inside me." Sky TV has revealed an official trailer for an intriguing new sci-fi series debuting this summer called The Midwich Cuckoos. This is the kind of sci-fi we'll post about even if it is more TV. The film is an exciting modern-day reimagining of John Wyndham's science fiction classic novel first published in 1957. A small fictional village in England named Midwich is completely subdued by an alien presence for an entire day. Upon waking, it is discovered that numerous women in the town are pregnant. As the children of the phenomenon grow, it becomes clear they are not of this world. Sounds similar to that Icelandic series Katla recently, but with British sensibilities instead. This show stars Keeley Hawes, Max Beesley, Synnove Karlsen, Indica Watson, Alec Nicholls, Kimia Lamour, Natalia Harris, and Lara Rossi. Those kids looks super creepy! I'm scared of this one already. ›››

Trailer for 'Dr. Bird's Advice For Sad Poets' with a Pigeon Therapist

Dr. Bird's Advice For Sad Poets Trailer

"Will love always be this painful?" Madman Films in Australia has unveiled another official trailer for the indie comedy Dr. Bird's Advice For Sad Poets, made by filmmaker Yaniv Raz. This originally premiered last year and is just now getting an official release in some countries. In the emotionally charged, wild and humorous world of sixteen year old James Whitman, we see his struggle to overcome anxiety and depression by seeking advice from Dr. Bird - an imaginary pigeon therapist - in the wake of his sister's disappearance. Based on the book by Evan Roskos. This indie film stars Lucas Jade Zumann as James Whitman, with Taylor Russell, David Arquette, Jason Isaacs, Chase Stokes, Tom Wilkinson, and Michael Cole as Walt Whitman. This looks like it has some really creative filmmaking throughout, drifting into the fantasy realm to tell this story of loss and love. It Came From Finland! 'Hatching' and 'Girl Picture' at Sundance 2022

Hatching - Sundance 2022

There are two excellent films from Finland playing at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival this year. Both are great discoveries at the fest – and both deserve to be talked about, too. The first one is a portrait of Finnish youth called Girl Picture, though the original Finnish title is much better - Tytöt Tytöt Tytöt which just translates to Girls Girls Girls (watch the trailer). The second one is a freaky little horror comedy film called Hatching, also known as Pahanhautoja in Finnish (watch the trailer), about a girl who finds a strange egg that becomes big and hatches something evil. Both of them feature similar themes of perfectionism, growing up, what it's like to be a girl in Finland, and how hard it is to deal with parents. But they're very different films and I'm delighted to report that each one is enjoyable and worth watching. While there are plenty of films coming out of Norway & Sweden already, talented Finnish filmmakers are finally on the rise now, too. ›››

Watch: Netflix's Making Of Doc for Campion's 'The Power of the Dog'

The Power of the Dog Making Of

How did they make that? Netflix has debuted a fascinating new behind-the-scenes documentary film for The Power of the Dog. The featurette is under 20 minutes and spends time on set and in post-production with filmmaker Jane Campion. The video is titled Behind The Scenes with Jane Campion and can be watched on Netflix for free along with the film. This is part of Netflix's push for The Power of the Dog during the Awards Season, with hopes it'll get more than a few Oscar nominations. It's pretty much a DVD Special Feature available on streaming. "A rare glimpse into the creative process of Academy Award winning writer, director and producer Jane Campion as she shares her memories of the making of The Power of the Dog." (More reading on the craft here.) Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the film with Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, and Adam Beach. This is one of the best films of the year and it's so carefully crafted. The cinematography by DP Ari Wegner is stunning, and we should be talking more about her work, too. Enjoy. ›››

1800s Werewolf Thriller Film 'The Cursed' Trailer FKA 'Eight for Silver'

True Things Trailer

"You will all pay for the sins made by our elders." LD Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for the film The Cursed, which is the new titled for the horror thriller called Eight for Silver. This premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival under the Eight for Silver titled, received mixed reviews with some bits of praise. In rural 19th-century France, a mysterious, possibly supernatural menace threatens a small village. John McBride, a pathologist, comes to town to investigate -- and exorcise some of his own demons in the process. This is a werewolf film, which isn't so much of a spoiler, because it's a "reimagining" meaning the mythology is not what you're expecting. You'll have to watch to find out what that means! Starring Boyd Holbrook, with Kelly Reilly, Alistair Petrie, Roxane Duran, Nigel Betts, Stuart Bowman, Simon Kunz, and Amelia Crouch. She lives in a small town on the water in the UK, and is lonely and just wants to meet a nice man. Sundance 2022: Friendship Comedy 'Am I OK?' with Dakota Johnson

Am I OK? Review

This is the story of Lucy and Jane – two friends who have always been best friends. This is the story of two women who finally realize it's time to grow up and figure themselves out on their own. Am I OK? is a new buddy comedy made by actors / lovers / partners Stephanie Allynne & Tig Notaro, both making their feature directorial debut. In addition to making a film about friendship and how important that is, this film is meant as a guide for young women who are struggling to come to grips with a realization that they might be lesbian or bisexual or queer or whatever. The film is about a woman who, at age 32, realizes she has never dealt with the feelings deep inside her telling her she might not be straight. But instead of encountering hate or other trouble, Notaro & Allynne made a film that offers support and understanding. It's a compassionate comedy that will make you laugh and smile, and by the end you'll feel much better. No matter who you are. ›››

New Trailer for the UK Re-Release of François Truffaut's 'Jules et Jim'

Jules et Jim Trailer

"As fresh, playful, and enigmatic as ever." BFI has released a brand new trailer for the 60th anniversary re-release of François Truffaut's iconic classic Jules et Jim. The film originally opened in France on January 23rd, 1962 - exactly 60 years ago this week. It's getting a full theatrical re-release in the UK in February. No US plan has been set yet. François Truffaut's hugely popular New Wave classic sees Jeanne Moreau at her most ebullient as Catherine, a Parisian beauty caught up in a complex ménage à trois with the two friends of the title – one Austrian, the other French – just before the First World War. "A romantic rollercoaster of a movie, it’s fast, funny, stylish and affecting all at once." From BFI: "This re-release of Jules et Jim is part of a major Truffaut retrospective which also includes a re-release of The 400 Blows, a two-month season at BFI Southbank, a collection of films on BFI Player, partner seasons at cinemas:" Edinburgh Filmhouse, Glasgow Film Theatre and Ciné Lumière – and BFI Blu-ray releases later in spring 2022. So it's the year of Truffaut! At least in the UK. Give this fun trailer a look for a fresh new take on this classic French romance. ›››

First Teaser for Another Stuck-in-a-Cube Sci-Fi Thriller 'The Abandon'

The Abandon Trailer

"If anybody's listening, please say something." Mill House Motion Pictures has released a festival teaser trailer for the indie contained sci-fi thriller film The Abandon, made by filmmaker Jason Satterlund. This will be premiering at the upcoming 2022 Mammoth Film Festival in just a few weeks, playing as the Closing Night film. It seems to be a combination of two other sci-fi films - Source Code and Cube. A wounded soldier awakens in a strange cube that tests his physical and mental limits as he attempts to find a way to escape against a ticking clock. The cube room begins to change: fluctuating extreme temperatures, random shifts of gravity, and strange writing appearing on the walls. Starring Jonathan Rosenthal, with Tamara Perry as the voice of the woman on the phone. From this teaser my guess is he's in some sort of coma or machine to keep him alive, kind of like Source Code. But it's hard to tell if it's this or something else like aliens or VR. ›››

Sundance 2022: Aubrey Plaza Finds a New Life in 'Emily the Criminal'

Emily the Criminal Review

Yo ho, a criminal's life for me. Maybe doing something illegal might actually be better than working a "real" job? There's clever commentary worked into this new film about the inherent problems with capitalism and corporate culture, ultimately hinting that the quickest and easiest way to earn money might actually be the best way. Which is why so many people choose this path instead of a formal career. Emily the Criminal is a slick, engaging credit card scam heist thriller starring Aubrey Plaza - who also produced the film. This is one of the final premieres at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and it's a late fest highlight, one of my faves. It remains hyper focused and never wanders, with a 96 minute runtime that is just right for this story. A few critics have compared it to Uncut Gems, but I'd say it's much more similar to the black jack scam movie 21. ›››

Festival Teaser for Coming-of-Age Horror 'Honeycomb' from Canada

Honeycomb Trailer

"Do not come looking, do not worry about me, I will having the time of my life." An early festival teaser trailer has debuted for an indie "coming-of-age horror" film set to premiere this week - playing at the 2022 Slamdance Film Festival (the smaller Sundance spin-off). The film is called Honeycomb and it was filmed on Cortes Island, British Columbia in Canada. Five girls stray from society on the hunt for something more special… you can find them if you follow the sound. "A beautiful and raw love letter to youth, Honeycomb is a bold and promising feature debut for Fast, who shares writing credit with Emmett Roiko." The film stars a breakout cast of young talent including Rowan Wales, Sophie Bawks-Smith, Jillian Frank, Destini Stewart, and Mari Geraghty. Not the best teaser, but it seems like a good one to keep an eye on anyway. ›››

Morena Baccarin in Justin Lin's Crime Thriller 'The Endgame' Trailer

The Endgame Trailer

"Federova's plan is bigger than the banks." NBC has unveiled an official trailer for The Endgame, a new heist thriller series from creators Jake Coburn and Nicholas Wootton. We're breaking our usual no-TV rules to feature this because so many series are being made for streaming these days, and because this is directed by a major movie director - Justin Lin, of Better Luck Tomorrow, Tokyo Drift, Star Trek Beyond, and F9: The Fast Saga most recently. Endgame is high-stakes thriller about Elena Federova, a very recently captured international arms dealer and brilliant criminal mastermind who even in captivity orchestrates a number of coordinated bank heists, and Val Turner, the principled, relentless and socially outcast FBI agent who will stop at nothing to foil her ambitious plan. Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathé star as Elena & Val, with Costa Ronin, Kelly AuCoin, Noah Bean, Jordan Johnson-Hinds, Kamal Angelo Bolden, and Mark D. Espinoza. It kind of looks like Now You See Me with Baccarin. Bow to the Queen. ›››

First Teaser for Indie Cult Thriller 'The Mire' Directed by Adam Nelson

The Mire Poster

"Do you remember the moment of your birth?" "Has anyone ever answered yes to that question?" Apple Park Films has revealed the first teaser trailer for The Mire, an intriguing indie thriller about a cult. Made by Apple Park Films and Familiar Stranger Studios. On the eve of a mass suicide, the charismatic cult leader Joseph Layton must convince his two most loyal followers that he intends to go through with their plans. A battle of wits ensues across one evening. The film stars Antony Knight, Holly McLachlan, and Joseph Adelakun. It's hard to judge based on the little bit of footage in this trailer, but I'm curious to see more. In the meantime, if you're itching for more cult thrillers we'd recommend Midnight Mass if you haven't seen it. ›››

Sundance 2022: Something's Not Right in Extra Eerie 'Resurrection'

Resurrection Review

There's something wrong with Maggie. She is not who she seems. But I'll get back to that. Resurrection is an exceedingly eerie thriller premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and it's one of the best films I've seen at the festival this year. This meticulously crafted film follows in the footsteps of Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer as an unsettling film that gets crazier and crazier as it carries on. There are no easy answers, in fact there are no answers at all. The film hides many details in almost every single frame, and there's a foreboding feeling that builds throughout. I think a key part of my enjoyment experiencing this film is not knowing anything about it before watching. Festivals offer us this very special opportunity to discover films that have never been shown publicly before, there's no marketing or PR around them yet, all we have to work with is a vague synopsis and photo. The rest we discover as the film unveils at its premiere. ›››

New US Trailer for Chinese Comedy 'Too Cool to Kill' Starring Ma Li

Too Cool to Kill Traielr

"When you start acting, really dig into your character." Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Chinese comedy titled Too Cool to Kill, a sort of comedy of errors about a comedian who gets mixed up in some kind of crazy plots. This is opening in the US starting in late February right around the same time it also opens in China. In order to fully realize his dream of being a comedian, Wei Chenggong accidentally broke into a dangerous scam under the "persuasion" of actress Milan. But Wei Chenggong didn't know he was already involved in another real & ridiculous plot. He's left to rely on only his good luck and (somewhat questionable) acting skills to survive. Starring Wei Xiang and Ma Li, with Lun Ai, Minghao Chen, and Gianluca Zoppa. It looks like some goofy crime comedy fun, with lots of wacky characters. Worth a look. ›››

First Look Teaser for Guillermo del Toro's Stop Motion 'Pinocchio' Film

Pinocchio Teaser

"It's a story you may think you know, but uh, you don't. Not really." Netflix has revealed a first look teaser for Pinocchio, the new film from Guillermo del Toro following Nightmare Alley's released last month. This is set to arrive on Netflix in December later this year, and I expect it to show up at film festivals before then. Del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi's classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This stop-motion musical follows the mischievous & disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world. Directed by del Toro & Mark Gustafson, the film features an all-star voice cast with Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Along with Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton. Have a look. ›››

Sundance 2022: Embracing Pleasure in 'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande'

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

This is a knock out! There is nothing wrong with enjoying sex. But we still live in a world that pushes back against this. There's still many people who believe it is this taboo, private thing, and the only real use for it is creating children. Or something that they don't have control over because they never learned about their own body. This film finally pushes back against this misunderstanding and intolerance, and reminds us that we all need to learn to appreciate and enjoy sex more. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a lovely little revolutionary film about sex and pleasure, directed by the Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde (director of Animals previously), from a screenplay written by Katy Brand. It's a beautifully intimate, honest one-room drama about a woman who, at age 55, finally wants to have some real, good sex. And though she's afraid of it, and has never had an orgasm, with the right conversation and right touch, she's finally ready to open up. ›››

Official Trailer for 'Picabo' Doc Series on the Famous Olympic Skier

Picabo Doc Trailer

"Picabo put ski racing back on the map." Peacock has released this new docu series titled Picabo on their streaming service this weekend. Just in time for the 2022 Winter Olympics kicking off soon in China. The documentary chronicles the life of 1998 Olympic alpine skiing gold medalist Picabo Street, a name many will recognize as she was very famous in the 90s. It features an emotional interview with Street and fellow skier Lindsey Vonn and tons of archival footage. "Picabo Street is a true sporting pioneer who I’ve looked up to as long as I can remember," said Vonn speaking about the film. I've been lucky to be able to call her not only a mentor but a friend. I wanted to play this forward by documenting her incredible story in Picabo – I hope it will inspire the next generation of barrier-breaking athletes." This is produced by Frank Marshall and it's directed by him and Vonn. It covers her unorthodox childhood in Idaho to her Olympic successes, dramatic recoveries from ill-timed injuries, and her arrest in 2015. Looks like there's plenty this will discuss. ›››

A Solo Journey to Raise Awareness in 'A Peloton of One' Doc Trailer

A Peloton of One Trailer

"We haven't done a very good job of keeping our kids' safe." Global Digital Releasing has unveiled a trailer for a documentary film titled A Peloton of One, finally opening in theaters and on VOD this winter. The film first premiered back in 2020 at a festival and has been awaiting a release ever since then. A Peloton of One is a doc that follows the journey of Dave Ohlmuller as he cycles alone, from Chicago, IL to Montclair, NJ – around 700 miles in total – in order to raise awareness about childhood sexual abuse. The filmmakers explain why they wanted to tell his story: "A 'peloton' is a cycling term that simply means a group of riders. But Dave Ohlmuller started his journey as a peloton of one. Like so many sexual abuse victims, he believed he was alone in his despair. At the end of this journey, he realized he is now part of a much greater whole, a true Peloton of One, dedicated to helping the millions of Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse in the country and across the globe." This as well as the doc Procession are the kind of important films that'll change lives. ›››

Sundance 2022: Jesse Eisenberg's 'When You Finish Saving the World'

When You Finish Saving the World

Once you finish saving the world, don't forget about your family either. American actor Jesse Eisenberg is one of the next actors to try their hand at filmmaking. His feature directorial debut is a film called When You Finish Saving the World, which premiered on Opening Night at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. It's both written and directed by Eisenberg, but he doesn't appear in it. He's made a film that seems to be a personal story inspired by his own experiences growing up (and falling for a smart girl) about the disconnect among a dysfunctional American family. The festival introduction at the beginning of the screening included a mention the film The Squid and the Whale, Noah Baumbach's 2005 drama that also played at Sundance. It's apparent that Eisenberg loves this film as much as everyone else because When You Finish Saving the World is very much the same style, the same kind of story about a family, and the same kind of film overall. ›››

Sundance 2022: Sara Dosa's Spectacularly Poetic 'Fire of Love' Doc

Fire of Love Review

"If you could die at any moment, what do you leave behind?" That's the important question at the core of this documentary – because that's what the filmmakers were wondering when they were putting it together. Fire of Love is an extraordinary new documentary feature premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by doc filmmaker Sara Dosa (of The Seer and the Unseen and The Last Season previously), the film tells the story of Katia & Maurice Krafft – two world famous French volcanologists. Unfortunately they died researching a volcano in Japan back in 1991. But the rest of their story hasn't been told before. The filmmakers got their hands on the entire Krafft archives, tons of old video footage and more, and figured out how to tell one of the most compelling and beautiful and inspiring stories of love and adventure ever made. ›››

Watch: 'The Windshield Wiper' Animated Short Asks: 'What is Love?'

The Windshield Wiper Short Film

"What color do you see when you think about yourself?" This entrancing animated short film is worth 15 minutes of your time to watch. It will make you question your own thoughts about love and romance… The Windshield Wiper is the latest animated short made by Spanish animator / filmmaker Alberto Mielgo - best known for directing the short The Witness for Netflix's "Love, Death & Robots" series (which has the same style as this). The Windshield Wiper is a very personal and particular vision on Love and relationships. Presented by Pastel. Written, directed, designed by Mielgo. "Inside a café, after lunch and while smoking a whole pack of cigarettes, a middle-aged man asks himself and the audience an ambitious question: What is Love? A collection of vignettes and situations will lead the man to the desired conclusion." I like seeing all the different visualizations of "love" in here. But watch out - there's some sex & nudity so it's NSFW. Enjoy. ›››

Mission: Impossible

Another delay for these two highly anticipated action movie sequels. Paramount Pictures and Skydance have confirmed an extra year delay for the back-to-back next Mission: Impossible movies. The rumor is that this means the storyline will play out between both movies - with a big cliffhanger ending tying them together. Mission: Impossible 7 was set for release in September of 2022 later this year, but it has been rescheduled for release on July 14th, 2023 next summer. New US Trailer for Danish Biopic 'The Pact' Starring Birthe Neumann

The Pact Trailer

"This could change everything. I can write without feeling guilty." Juno Films has released the official US trailer for an acclaimed Danish biopic titled The Pact, which originally opened in theaters in Denmark last year. The film examines the intense friendship between Karen Blixen, the Danish author best known for her autobiographical novel "Out of Africa" (written under the pen name "Isak Dinesen") and Thorkild Bjørnvig, a young and promising poet. She offers him a Faustian bargain and promises him stardom if he will obey her unconditionally. What a strange relationship. From director Bille August comes this sterling adaptation of Bjørnvig's bestselling memoir. Birthe Neumann stars as Karen Blixen, joined by Simon Bennebjerg, Nanna Skaarup Voss, Asta Kamma August, Anders Heinrichsen, and Marie Mondrup. This looks like a smart character study of an arrogant woman going mad at the end of her life. Perhaps worth a watch. ›››

First Trailer for Thriller 'Superior' with Alessandra Mesa & Ani Mesa

Superior Trailer

"I'm worried about her." Factory 25 has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Superior, which initially premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival last year. This grainy, retro indie is about a woman on the run who returns to her hometown to hide out with her identical twin sister, Vivian, which alters the trajectory of both their lives. Described as an "Almodovarian psychodrama" with touches of Lynch and De Palma and 80s psychological thriller cinema. She realizes that she can pass as her sister and gets into even more trouble pretending to be her while trying to stay out of any trouble. Starring Alessandra Mesa and Anamari Mesa as sisters Marian and Vivian; along with Pico Alexander, Jake Hoffman, and Stanley Simons. This has a very specific pastiche that will some will be very attracted to, but for others it may just be grueling. But there's intricacy in the two lead's performances playing off each other throughout the film. ›››

Watch: Amusing Animated 'Pacific Rim - But Cute' Videos are Adorbz

Pacific Rim - But Cute

"You taste like screwdrivers." Awww aren't they adorable? Fighting all friendly and cuddly like that. A kick ass little Canadian animation studio called Little Mountain Animation made two amusing 30-second short videos riffing on Pacific Rim. They ask: What If Pacific Rim Was Cute? The first video dropped last year, and the second one just showed up this week and they're both must watch. The "kaiju" cute green dino in this is actually from one of LMA's other projects called Big Dinosaur, though perfectly reused for this series of adorable videos, too. But this one is all about the cuteness: "We explore some really interesting questions in this one. We love giant robots. We love giant monsters. But what if they were cute?" Well, now we know! And it's amazing! I agree, "we need this to be a real movie." Maybe it could happen? Who knows. ›››

Watch: Incredible Animated Music Video for Yu Su's Song 'Melaleuca'

Melaleuca Music Video

This is a trip and a half. There is a long history of animated music videos being edgy and totally ridiculous, and this one joins the ranks as another animated music video you just have to see. An indie Montreal-based animator named Jordan Minkoff has created a video for a song by Yu Su - a Chinese-born, Vancouver-based electronic musician. The downtempo track is called "Melaleuca" and it features some nice vibes. But what is going on in this video…? "So there's a buncha ppl and they go on a plane and then the plane falls in love w/ another plane! In the sky!!!
