This originally premiered in 2018 and won tons of awards at festivals, now it's finally online to watch. Yulia and Juliet, both 16, are locked up in a juvenile detention centre. Despite their circumstances… they feel like they can take on anything together. They’re in love with each other. Nothing can hurt them when they’re together. But then Juliet is released. This short film is inspired by, of course, Shakespeare's most famous love story. Starring Sara Luna Zoric as Yulia and Dylan Jongejans as Juliet. This is one of those shorts that proves how incredibly talented the filmmaker is, right down to the shot at the end of them looking at each other through windows. Perfection. ›››

Official US Trailer for Award-Winning Ukranian Sci-Fi Drama 'Atlantis'

Grasshopper Film has released an official US trailer for an acclaimed, award-winning Ukrainian sci-fi drama titled Atlantis, which originally premiered at last year's Venice & Toronto Film Festivals. Set in Eastern Ukraine in 2025, the film is about a soldier suffering from PTSD who befriends a young volunteer hoping to restore peaceful energy to a brutally war-torn society. The film is Ukraine's official Best International Film submission this year for the Academy Awards, and it also won the Venice Horizons Best Film Award in 2019, and a few other film festival prizes. This first opened in South Korea in 2000, and premiered at festivals in 2001, Park's third feature at the time. "Before Oldboy, before The Handmaiden, visionary filmmaker Park Chan-wook helmed this gripping tale of deceit, misunderstanding and the senselessness of war." Gunfire breaks out in the DMZ between North & South Korea, leaving two North Korean soldiers dead while a wounded South Korean soldier (Lee Byung-hun) flees to safety. New US Trailer for Almodóvar's 'The Human Voice' with Tilda Swinton

"Tilda Swinton burns up the screen…" Sony Classics has debuted a new US trailer for Pedro Almodóvar's short film that he made during lockdown earlier this summer titled The Human Voice. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival a few months ago, and it also played at the New York and London Film Festivals. Almodóvar teamed up with Tilda Swinton to make this 30-minute short film, which will be showing in cinemas in the US sometime in early 2021 (they're also submitting this to the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short). A woman watches time passing next to the suitcases of her ex-lover (who is supposed to come pick them up, but never arrives) and a restless dog who doesn't understand that his master has abandoned him. Two living beings facing abandonment. This contemplative short has a very, very cute doggie in it (he's in the trailer!), along with Swinton, and it's an intellectual rumination on relationships, life, purpose, and everything else that Almodóvar loves to talk about. GKids has revealed a new US trailer for the Japanese animated film Earwig and the Witch, the latest film by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki's son who also directed the films Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill previously. This is Studio Ghibli's first ever CGI 3D feature film, and it's their first since shutting down a few years ago. Earwig and the Witch, also known as Âya and the Witch, was supposed to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year - instead it's debuting direct-to-TV on the NHK channel in Japan this month - and will open in the US early next year. The story follows an orphan girl, Earwig, who is adopted by a witch and comes home to a spooky house filled with mystery and magic. She tries to learn magic and more. The English-language voice cast features Richard E. Grant, Kacey Musgraves (in her first vocal acting role), Dan Stevens, and Taylor Paige Henderson as the main character Earwig. I reallyyy wished this looked better than it does, because I want to be excited about it, but goodness it looks so ugly. Hopefully the cute story makes up for it. ›››

"My goal was to elevate the found footage genre by making the viewer not just a voyeur, but to feel like they are an active participant in the supernatural events of the film," says Mehran. The cast includes Llana Barron, Lex Wilson, Jordan Kaplan, Agathe Salzmann, Casey Nolan, Roxane Delisle, and Mike D. Smith. Despite the attempt to make this unique, this doesn't look unique at all. It is a spiritual sequel to Inside Out, but only in concept, in that it visualizes and rationalizes the irrational concept of a "soul" (rather than our emotions like Inside Out) and takes us on a journey to the other side, the great beyond, to remind us how beautiful our lives really are. Much like Inside Out, also directed by Pete Docter, this film becomes a guide for helping us deal with the weight of grappling with questions like "what does having a soul mean and how do we deal with these thoughts about it?" While focusing on one specific person and his experience, we're still able to learn about ourselves and feel the warm embrace of Joe's story and his own desire for meaning. ›››

The film is made by his own daughter, filmmaker Chantal Potter, and played at a few festivals this year. Alex Lawther (seen in "The End of the F***ing World", Freak Show, Goodbye Christopher Robin) stars as Alex, a young man who arrives uninvited to a party and after a set of excruciating interactions with other guests, is forced to recount a memorable dream he's had about being on a fishing boat. The film is described by Stimpson as "a meditation on oneiric experience in cinema, mental health, talking dogs and fishermen." The short also stars Emma Corrin, Chris New, Sam Haygarth, and Simon Manyonda. There's some fascinating nuance in this short, and heaps of uncomfortable anxiety. Escher: Journey Into Infinity, which is finally launching in the US in February after originally premiering in The Netherlands in 2018. The doc film tells the story of world famous Dutch graphic artist M.C Escher (who lived from 1898-1972). Equal parts history, psychology, and psychedelia, Robin Lutz's entertaining, eye-opening portrait gives us the man through his own words and images: diary musings, excerpts from lectures, correspondence and more are voiced by British actor Stephen Fry, while Escher’s woodcuts, lithographs, and other print works appear in both original and playfully altered form. 'Chadwick Boseman: A Man Among Men' Promo Trailer from Netflix

"I'm happy that I got to be a part of sharing his genius with the world." Netflix has released a featurette for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, a 1920s blues movie from filmmaker George C. Wolfe (Nights in Rodanthe, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks). The film debuts on Netflix today - and this final trailer is in memory of the talented Chadwick Boseman, who passed away this year. It's his final film and final performance. Tensions rise when the trailblazing Mother of the Blues and her band gather at a Chicago recording studio in 1927. Adapted from August Wilson's play of the same name. Viola Davis stars as "Mama Blues", also known as Ma Rainey, and Boseman co-stars as her horn player Levee; with Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige. This trailer really makes me want to watch this film, but it also makes me really sad we won't ever see more great performances from Chadwick again. ›››

"You want me to kill HIM?" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller titled American Dream, arriving on VOD at the beginning of January. This is actually the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, who was still is Steven Spielberg's regular cinematographer for years and years (he even recently filmed West Side Story with him). Strange we've never heard of this before now! The film is about two young American entrepreneurs who face a Russian mobster's vengeance after they cut him out of a business deal. American Dream stars Luke Bracey and Michiel Huisman, with Nick Stahl, Agnieszka Grochowska, Samantha Ressler, Ed Metzger, and Kathleen Gati. This doesn't look particularly unique, another mobster vs entrepreneurs story with all the usual tropes. Fire it up. ›››
