On 'Tenet' - Exploring Christopher Nolan's 'Inversion' as a Filmmaker

In Tenet, Christopher Nolan's new mind-bending, time-traveling epic blockbuster, there is a scene early on where Clémence Poésy's character Barbara tells our hero, simply known as "The Protagonist": "Don't try to understand it. Feel it." It certainly feels like the mission statement for the film, Nolan's way of telling the audience you probably won't be able to comprehend everything you see in what's about to unfold, so just feel it. It makes sense for a filmmaker who often prefers sonic and tonal ambience over narrative clarity, and in the case of Tenet there's a distinct feeling he's acknowledging this with the hope you'll just go along for the ride. Except in the case of Tenet, unlike Nolan's other works, there's little to understand, or feel, this time. ›››

Flying Around the World for Apollo 11 in 'One More Orbit' Doc Trailer

A daring team of astronauts and aviators flew a high-speed Gulfstream jet around the earth faster than anyone ever has to set the pole-to-pole circumnavigation record - under 44 hours. Beginning their mission from the same spot Apollo 11 launched for the moon 50 years before, this tribute to the past, present, and future of space exploration breaks the boundaries of what was previously thought possible. The flight was completed by former astronaut Terry Virts (who directs the film) and Captain Hamish Harding. First Trailer for Sundance Double-Winner 'Minari' Starring Steven Yeun

A24 has finally revealed an official trailer for Minari, the outstanding Sundance double-winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the festival earlier this year. A new film from Korean-American filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung, who grew up in rural Arkansas, Minari is about a Korean family that moves to rural Arkansas to start a farm. Steven Yeun stars as the father, but the film's big breakout is Alan S. Kim, who plays their young boy named David. The cast includes Yari Han as his wife Monica, Yuh-Jung Youn as grandma, plus Will Patton, Noel Cho, Scott Haze, Eric Starkey, and Esther Moon. One of the best films from Sundance this year, I wrote in my fest recap that it's a "heartwarming, lovely film" and is worthy of our attention and all the accolades it has received so far. This premiered last year and picked up tons of awards playing on the festival circuit, finally online to watch for free thanks to Short of the Week. In the midst of a searing heatwave, two little children find a way to cool everyone down! A playful stop motion short film animated in a hybrid technique between cut out, and claynimation and thousands of replacements pieces. There's a good amount of creative stop-motion filmmaking, from various materials like plastic wrap for the water, to amusing claymation characters galore. 'Heatwave is essentially an ode to the Greek summer of my childhood and every summer since,' Xenos reveals. It's dialogue free, but does feature a nice score by Andreas Gutuen Aaser. TIFF 2020: Tomm Moore's Animated Film 'Wolfwalkers' is Magnificent

One of the very best independent animators / filmmakers making movies right now is Tomm Moore. This isn't even a subjective opinion, it's pretty much just a fact at this point. Moore's third feature film is titled Wolfwalkers, and it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this year. Ohh my it's magnificent. This movie follows his other two underrated, outstanding animated features The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014). Wolfwalkers is actually co-directed by Tomm Moore and his long-time concept artist colleague Ross Stewart (making his directorial debut). It's clear this is the perfect collaboration - almost every frame in Wolfwalkers looks like concept art, with all the characters brought to life by Moore's distinctly gorgeous animation. Plus, of course, it's driven by a lovely story of wolves and women and magic and mother nature. ›››

This one is titled Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), since it's not really a full-length feature film - and you can watch it for free below. This 30-min short was made entirely on Zoom and is presented as a family get-together with everyone – there's a big surprise, too. The entire family from the two movies is back: Steven Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern, and Martin Short. Plus there's an appearance by Florence Pugh as baby Maggie all grown up, and Ben Platt playing Annie's son Georgie, and a few other special guests. This "sequel" is also crafted as a fundraising effort – to support the World Central Kitchen – they're providing meals for families impacted by the pandemic. Five oddball criminals planning a bank robbery rent rooms on a cul-de-sac from an octogenarian widow under the pretext that they are classical musicians. New Trailer for China's 'Abyssal Spider' Movie Has A Lot of Spiders

"Now our ship is abandoned by the gods already." Oh no no no no. Another new official trailer has arrived for the freaky deaky Chinese horror film Abyssal Spider. We featured the first teaser trailer last month, but the footage didn't have a single shot of any spider in it. A new trailer from Hong Kong has debuted and it's packed with spiders - small ones and a few medium size ones. And there's probably one giant one that they battle at the end. The title for this release has also been changed to Mad Spider Sea, which is just as cool as the other title Abyssal Spider. Most of the film takes place on a fishing boat vessel, starring Sunny Wang, Cheng Jen-Shuo, Ke Jiayan, Li Liren, Li Kangsheng, Lian Kai, Xie Peien, Jiu Kong, and Chunfeng. After complaints about "no spiders" in the first trailer, the screenwriter went on Twitter to say that there will be plenty of them. And they've delivered on that promise! Only 60 seconds of footage and I'm already shaking with fear. I hate spiders so much. They are clearly CGI spiders, but this still looks scary AF. ›››

TIFF 2020: Francis Lee's Lovely Seaside Romance Film 'Ammonite'

"I don’t want to go back to the life I had before you…" Love is a powerful force. And love can be a beautiful thing, especially when it connects two people who don't have any interest in love. But true love is also rare, and honestly hard to find. As hard to find as a complete, unbroken fossil hidden inside a rock, just waiting patiently for millions of years to be discovered. That is the primary metaphor in this film, and it's a lovely metaphor. Ammonite is the second feature from British filmmaker Francis Lee, following his breakout debut God's Own Country a few years ago. It was selected for the Cannes Film Festival this year, but instead is premiering at the Toronto & London Film Festivals this fall (following Cannes' cancellation). I was lucky to catch the film, as Lee only wants to show it in a cinema. Rightfully so - it's worth to wait to see it properly. ›››

Trailer for the New 'Director's Cut' of 'Delirious' with Steve Buscemi

"They're just people, no different from you and me." Anyone remember this one? Shout Factory debuted a new trailer for an indie film titled Delirious, now being re-released as a special "Director's Cut" edition after more than 12 years. This originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 (and I reviewed it way back then!) and years later Tom DiCillo has come back to it and secured the rights and restored it to his original version. "Just before its original release some editing choices were forced upon me which I've always regretted. When I finally found the [rights] owner… I jumped at the chance to restore the film to its original cut. I wrote it for Steve Buscemi and he delivers one of his finest performances. I'm thrilled this Director's Cut will give people a chance to appreciate it." Buscemi stars a paparazzi who takes in a strange homeless kid, played by Michael Pitt, under his wing but then he becomes a famous TV star. "What separates us from animals?" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a Norwegian post-apocalyptic thriller titled Cadaver, from young Norwegian filmmaker Jarand Herdal.
